The TMP-Marian Monarch boys and girls basketball teams
closed out the Mid-Continent League Saturday with a pair of wins over the Ellis
Railroaders. 

The TMP boys never trailed on their way to their way to a
68-38 win in the third-place game.

The girls used a strong second half to pull away for the
58-52 win in the fifth-place game.

The Monarchs wasted little time jumping out to an early lead
12-2 lead. Jackson Schulte scored eight of his team-high 18 points in the first
half as the Monarchs built an 18-8 lead first quarter lead.

TMP opened the second quarter on an 11-2 run with Schulte
and Dylan Werth combining to score all 11 points as TMP led at that point
29-10.

The Monarchs were able to build a 24-point lead in the
second quarter at 39-15.

In the third quarter the Monarchs led by as many as 33 at
56-23. With the continues clock in the fourth quarter TMP clinched the 68-38 win.

Schulte’s 18 points led three Monarchs in double-figures.
Dylan Werth finished with 14 points and Lucas Lang added 13.

The TMP boys improved to 8-3 while Ellis dropped to 8-3.

After a pair of early ties TMP jumped out to an 8-4 lead and
led after one quarter 10-7. Emilee Lane scored six of hear eight points in the
first quarter.

Ellis’ Emily Eck scored the first eight points of the second
quarter and helped Ellis build a 15-10 lead. Ellis was able to hold onto the
lead until the end of the first half when TMP’s Megan Hamel drained a three
from just across half-court tying the game at 23.

After ending the first half on a 9-4 run the Monarchs opened
the second half on a 7-0 run to go up 30-23.

TMP was able to build an 11-point third quarter before Ellis
pulled within six at the end of three at 39-33.

In the fourth quarter TMP led by 10 twice on their way to
the 58-52 win.

Kyleigh Allen finished with a team-high 13 points and Jaci
VonLintel added 12 and Megan Hamel finished with 10 points.

Hannah Schiel scored a career-high 11 points for Ellis.

TMP improves to 9-2 with the win while Ellis drops to 7-4.

🏀TMP boys finish 3rd; Monarch girls 5th at MCL tournament

HAYS - The Hays High boys wrestling team had three first place finishes at Saturday's Bob Kuhn Senior Prairie Classic.

Junior Gavin Meyers went 4-0 to take the 220 pound title. Meyers won by fall in the first period of all four of his matches.

Fellow junior Dalton Dale won the title at 152 pounds, winning the title match by fall.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Miles McBride scored 18 points to help No. 14 West Virginia beat Kansas State 69-47 on Saturday in the Mountaineers’ first game in two weeks because of COVID-19 protocols..

Jalen Bridges added 12 points and Taz Sherman had 10 for West Virginia (10-4, 3-3 Big 12).

“I thought we were a bit rusty offensively, but defensively we stepped up and played one of our best games of the year,” McBride said. “We’ve been watching a lot of film and getting mental reps. Guys that could get on the floor did and we worked a lot on defense.”

Mike McGuirl led Kansas State (5-11, 1-7 Big 12) with 15 points, and Selton Miguel had 10. The Wildcats had 28 turnovers, the most by a Big 12 team this season and the most in a game under coach Bruce Weber. West Virginia scored 26 points off those mistakes.

“That’s the difference in the game,” Weber said. “We have to play stronger, but we got our butts kicked.”

The Wildcats got within eight points in the second half, but Sherman hit a two 3-pointers in an 8-0 run for West Virginia.

“The guys that had been working out looked good, but the other guys struggled,” West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. “We’ve got to get those guys back in playing shape which is hard with our schedule.”

Huggins said this was a good because the team hasn’t been all together in 14 days.

“It was big since we came off a loss two weeks ago and then got hit with COVID,” he said. “We really hadn’t had a time where we had more than four guys recently. Had to get anything done with that.”

West Virginia: Played well in its first game back in 14 days, but it helped to play one of the worst teams in the conference.

Kansas State: Had way too many turnovers to stand a chance. The Wildcats have lost five straight games by double digits.

West Virginia: Hosts Texas Tech on Monday night.

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Facing a large halftime deficit, Fort Hays State put together a strong second-half effort but came up short at Pittsburg State&nbsp; 79-68 Saturday.

The Gorillas (6-7, 6-7 MIAA) shot 69-percent from the floor in the first half including 6-of-8 from beyond the 3-point line. They raced out to a 14-0 lead and never led by 12 in the first half, building a 53-21 halftime lead. They pushed that lead to 33 early in the second half before the Tigers (4-8, 4-8 MIAA) closed within 15 with a little over eight minutes to play.

A quick 6-0 run pushed the Pitt State lead back over 20. The Tigers would get as close as 10 before ultimately falling by 11.

Jordan Pumphrey&nbsp;led the Tigers with a season-high 19 points off the bench. He&nbsp;was 7-of-11 from the field and 4-of-4 at the free-throw line, Quinten Rock&nbsp;was the only Tiger starter to score in double figures with 16 points, while also providing a team-best five assists.

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's track and field team recorded one provisional performance, captured three event victories and placed 13 in the top 3 at Saturday's Washburn All-Kansas Invite (Jan. 23). The Tigers totaled 143 points in the team competition to finish in first place. TOPEKA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's track and field team recorded one provisional performance, captured three event victories and placed 13 in the top 3 at Saturday's Washburn All-Kansas Invite (Jan. 23). The Tigers totaled 143 points in the team competition to finish in first place. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5994">Alexandra Hart</a>&nbsp;again cleared the NCAA Division II provisional threshold, winning the high jump competition after clearing the 5-6.50 bar on her third attempt. TOPEKA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team took home three first-place finishes and placed seven in the top three alongside one provisional performance in Saturday's Washburn All-Kansas Open (Jan. 23). <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5931">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;took first place in the pole vault after soaring over the 16-6.75 bar on his second attempt. PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team used its best shooting effort ever in an MIAA game to hold off Pittsburg State Saturday afternoon 85-73 at John Lance Arena. The Tigers hit 62.1-percent from the floor (36-of-58), their best shooting percentage ever in an MIAA contest and the third-best shooting game under coach Tony H0bson.

The Tigers (9-2, 9-2 MIAA) also hit 64.3 percent from behind the 3-point line (9-of-14), the third-best effort from deep during the MIAA era and the second-best percentage under Hobson. FHSU matched its season-high in scoring with 85 points while totaling a season-best 50 points in the first half.

Jaden Hobbs&nbsp;matched her season high with 26 points and added 12 assists for her second double-double of the season, finishing one assist shy of the program record. Whitney Randall added 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting while drilling 3-of-6 from behind the arc, giving the Tigers multiple 20-plus point scorers for the first time in nearly two years. Pittsburg State (8-5, 8-5 MIAA) led twice early on and&nbsp;tied the game at 12-12 before the Tigers finished the quarter on an 18-7 run to take a 30-19 lead.

The Tigers hit 13 of 18 shots in the opening quarter (72.2-percent) including 4-of-5 effort from behind the arc. Randall scored 10 points in the quarter and Hobbs dished out six assists.

Fort Hays State went 9-of-15 from the floor in the second quarter (60-percent) but were outscored by two and led 50-41 at halftime. They then scored the first seven points of the third quarter to go up 16. Cydney Bergmann&nbsp;added the next four points before Randall and Hobbs scored on back-to-back possessions, capping a 15-5 FHSU run that gave the Tigers their largest lead of the game midway through the third quarter at 65-46. The Gorillas closed within eight by the midway point of the fourth quarter before Katie Wagner pushed the lead back to double figures with a layup.&nbsp;Randall hit another 3-pointer at the 2:18 mark that proved to be the dagger, stretching the FHSU lead to 83-70. The senior hit two free throws in the final minute to push her scoring total over 20 for the fifth time in her career. 🏀 Hot-shooting Tiger women win at Pittsburg State

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — De’Vion Harmon scored 22 points and Oklahoma beat No. 9 Kansas 75-68 Saturday for its second victory this month over a top-10 opponent.

Oklahoma (9-4, 5-3 Big 12) has won three of its last four games against Kansas (10-5, 4-4) in Norman and is 8-1 at home this season at the Lloyd Noble Center. Included in that record is a win over then-No. 9 West Virginia on Jan. 2.

Kansas, which entered the game coming off losses at Oklahoma State and No. 2 Baylor, now has lost three straight games for the first time since February 2013. Marcus Garrett had 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Jayhawks, who were limited to two offensive rebounds. Kansas entered the game leading the Big 12 in rebounding margin but the Sooners outrebounded them 36-26.

“Big-time battle,” Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger said. “Both teams, I thought, fought like crazy. Buckets were hard to come by, at times, on both ends of the floor. Again, just proud of our guys. A game that could have gone either way. Guys hung in there, got a little bit of a margin there late, made free throws late and did a good job to close it out.”

A 9-2 run by Oklahoma broke open what had been a one-possession game and Austin Reaves’ first basket (after starting with seven misses) put the Sooners ahead 60-54 with 5:53 left.

Kansas pulled within 63-60 when Ochai Agbaji split a pair of free throws with 3:40 left, but Reaves and Umoja Gibson each followed with a driving layup to make it 67-60 and Kansas came no closer than four points the rest of the way.

Reaves, Elijah Harkless, Harmon and Reaves again each hit two free throws in the final 1:36 for the Sooners. Reaves scored 16 points, all in the second half, and made 10 of 11 free throws.

“I was just struggling the first half. I didn’t play well and that’s on me, 100 percent on me, and I mean, it’s in the past now,” Reaves said. “You go to halftime, you regroup and then you go out and you do what you can do to help the team win. But we really just stuck with the plan, stuck with what the coaches wanted us to do and at the end, we came out with a good win.”

The Jayhawks put Oklahoma in the bonus early in the second half – complaining about it earned Kansas coach Bill Self a technical foul – and the Sooners took advantage, making 18 of 22 foul shots after not having a free-throw attempt in the first half. Kansas made 10 of 14 free throws.

Garrett said Self’s postgame message was simple: “We’ve got to come together. Something has to change. The season is definitely not going how we expected it, but something has to change.”

Kansas: The Jayhawks went 0-3 during a brutal stretch of road games, but they know no one will feel sorry for them. Coach Bill Self will continue to look for solutions to prevent his team from losing four straight games for the first time since 1988-89, Roy Williams’ first season as Kansas coach.

Oklahoma: Oklahoma hasn’t cracked the Top 25 this season, but now is in sole possession of third place in a league with five top-15 teams. With the wins over West Virginia and Kansas this month, the Sooners are looking like a potential NCAA Tournament team.

Self, on dealing with the aftermath of a third straight loss: “We go back to practice. We’re just like 97 percent of the other teams in America. We’ve had a hard stretch, but we’ve played three road games against tournament teams. I don’t think we’re talented enough not to have a hard stretch if we don’t play well if we’re playing on the road against teams that are tournament teams.

“I don’t think that it’s broken. I do think that it certainly needs some repairing. I think we need a boost of energy. We may need to shake things up a little bit lineup-wise. … I told our guys the storybook season is done, as far as winning all your games and (getting) a one or two seed, that’s probably done. What we have to create is a storybook ending. That’s still in play.”

Saturday afternoon's fourth place game in Colby for Hays High was a rematch with Life Prep Academy. The Indians and the Fire squared off in Hays back in the Gerald Mitchell Shootout in early December.

Hays was scoreless in the first quarter but gave up only eight points through the first eight minutes of the game. The Indians opened up the second quarter with five quick points but never was any closer through the first half, trailing 16-8 at halftime.

Life Prep stretched their lead out to ten points early in third quarter before the Hays offense finally found some traction. The Indians went on a 10-2 run closing their deficit down to four with a minute left in the third quarter.

Hays continued the run into the fourth quarter as they took the lead on a pair of free throws at 27-25 with 4:08 left in the game. The lead was short lived as Life Prep scored just thirteen second later to tie the game and took the lead back just eight seconds following that with a steal and layup.

Hays did tie the game one more time with 3:18 remaining on two more free throws at 29 a piece. The Indians made just one of their final seven shots over the final three minutes, falling 40-31.

Hays drops to 3-8 on the year. The will host Pratt on Tuesday.

ELLIS – The Hoxie Indians finished the first half and opened
the second on a 20-2 run and held off a late rally as they beat the TMP-Marian
Monarchs Friday in the semifinals of the Mid-Continent League tournament in
Ellis.

The Monarchs (7-3) got out to a quick start Friday, scoring
the first eight points of the game and opening a 13-6 lead after one quarter of
play. Jackson Schulte scored five of his team-high 18 points to end the quarter.

Hoxie (9-0) was able to close the deficit to one at 15-14
early in the second quarter but Lucas Lang drained his first three-pointer of
the game and Kade Harris fast break layup giving TMP the 20-14 lead.

But Hoxie answered with a 10-0 run to end the first half
taking a 24-20 lead into halftime.

The start of the second half was much the same with the
Indians outscoring TMP 13-2 to take a 15-point lead at 37-22.

TMP put together a 15-5 run to get back within five at 42-37
through three quarters. 

In the fourth quarter Hoxie was able to build the lead back
to 15 but TMP never went away. 

Down 13 they used a 9-0 run to close within four at 60-56
but Hoxie was able to close out the game on their way to a 69-58 win.

Schulte’s 18 led four Monarchs in double-figures with Lucas
Lang added 13. Kade Harris recorded a career-high 11 points and Dylan Werth
finished with 10.

TMP will play Ellis in the third and fourth place game Saturday
in Ellis. The Railers lost to Trego in the other semifinal 56-50.

The Lady Dogs had 18 first half turnovers but when they did shoot made 56% of their shots and trimmed the Hays lead down to 26-20 at halftime.

Hays saw their lead knocked down to four early in the third quarter before Maia Lummus and Ashlyn Flax combined for three straight three pointers building the advantage 37-26. The lead would shrink to single figures just one more time.&nbsp;

Hays would hold Osborne in the fourth quarter on their way to a 53-28 victory.

Aaron made his last public appearance less than two weeks ago when he received the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Hammerin’ Hank” set a wide array of career hitting records during a 23-year career spent mostly with the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves, including RBIs, extra-base hits and total bases.

But the Hall of Famer will be remembered for one swing above all others, the one that made him baseball’s home-run king.

It was a title he would hold for more than 33 years, a period in which the Hammer slowly but surely claimed his rightful place as one of America’s most iconic sporting figures, a true national treasure worthy of mention in the same breath with Ruth or Ali or Jordan.

PLAINVILLE – TMP-Marian closed the first half on a 7-0 run and Emilee
Lane scored a career-high 26 points as the Lady Monarchs took down Trego Thursday
night in Plainville 47-40 to advance to the MCL tournament fifth place game Saturday.

Both teams got off to a slow start, combining for just 11
first-quarter points. Trego led 7-4.

TMP’s Emilee Lane scored the first eight points of the game for
the Monarchs helping them stay within striking district at 9-8 early in the second
quarter. 

After Trego had built a 16-11 second quarter lead the
Monarchs answered with a 7-0 run to take a 18-16. Sophia Balthazor hit her
second of three three-pointers in the game as part of that run.

The Monarchs took that two-point lead into the halftime
break and never trailed in the game again.

Lane scored six straight to open the second half for TMP and
eight of their first 10 in the half to put TMP up six at 28-22.

Trego was able to hang around thanks to the 13 points in the
third quarter by Trego’s Lili Shubert but it wasn’t enough as TMP built a 32-29
lead through three quarters.

In the fourth quarter Trego closed within four at 36-32 but
the Monarchs outscored Trego 11-8 the rest of the way as they secure the 47-40.

Emilee Lane scored a career-high 26 points and pulled down seven
rebounds to lead TMP.

Lili Shubert finished with a game-high 27 for Trego.

TMP improved to 8-2 with the win while Trego dropped to 8-3.

TMP girls knock off Trego at MCL tournament

JOPLIN, Mo. - Fort Hays State overcame an early 14-point deficit then nearly blew a late lead but held on for a 102-94 overtime win at Missouri Southern State Thursday night at the Leggett &amp; Platt Athletic Center.

Jared Vitztum and Kaleb Hammeke both scored 32 points and Alvin Thompson added 19 as the Tigers end their four-game losing streak.

The Indians trailed 14-6 before Carly Lang banked in a three pointer to beat the first quarter buzzer and Ashlyn Flax opened the second quarter with a three pointer of her own to bring Hays within two points at 14-12.&nbsp;

The rest of the quarter belonged to Goodland who went on a 20-5 run over the next seven and half minutes. Part of the big run came in the final three minutes after Hays trimmed their deficit down to six points. Goodland closed the second quarter on an 11-0 run.

Goodland led by as many as 25 in the third quarter before Hays made some headway. Nine straight points by the Indians cut the lead down to 16 in the third quarter, but they would get no closer until the final two minutes of the game when Hays closed on an 8-0 run for the final margin of 54-41.
