Hays picks up road win in Dodge City

Hays High traveled to Dodge City on Friday for the Indians' last Western Athletic Conference game of the season.

Hays got off to a slow start, netting just one yard on their first two drives that resulted in punts. Dodge City scored in between the two Indian three-and-outs on a 11 play 83 yard drive for a 7-0 advantage.

Hays struck on their third series of the first quarter when Jaren Kanak broke loose for a 45 yard touchdown capping a two play drive. The Jack Fields extra point tied the game at seven.

Highlights

The Red Demons would hold one more lead at 10-7 following a 50 yard field goal from Dodge City Manny Aguilar. 

Hays would score on their next five drives of the second and third quarter and vault to a 39-10 lead. It started when Kanak found Kyreese Groen for 69 yards and a touchdown on the first play of the drive. Hays took a 13-10 lead and never trailed again, winning 39-17.

Kanak scored three rushing touchdowns on the night and passed for two more. The second throwing score was to Bryce Salmans. Roy Maroni added a touchdown rush of one yard to cap the Hays scoring in the third quarter.

Hays put up 396 yards in the victory. Dodge City was held to 276.

The Indians are 5-1 on the year and finish WAC play at 3-1. Dodge City falls to 4-2 and 2-1. Hays plays at home next week for their homecoming game against 5-1 Maize South.
