HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs took to the floor at Al
Billinger Fieldhouse for the first time Friday night and they would not disappoint
as they earned a doubleheader sweep of the rival Ellis.

The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs (7-1, 4-0 MCL) used a 16-0 run
to end the first quarter and begin the second quarter and held Ellis (6-2, 2-2)
in check in the second half on their way to a 56-38 win.

The game opened with a pair of ties but with the game tied
at four TMP’s Emilee Lane scored back-to-back field goals kick starting an 11-2
run to end the first quarter. They extended the run to 20-2 with nine straight
to start the second quarter as they built a 24-6 lead.

Megan Hamel scored seven of her 10 points to end the first
quarter and Sophia Balthazor added seven of the first nine in the second
quarter as TMP lead 24-6 midway through the second. They built a 31-10 halftime
lead.

In the third quarter the Monarchs led by as many as 25 at
40-15. 

Ellis was able to cut the deficit to 40-24 with a 9-0 third
quarter run. But TMP’s Kyleigh Allen scored four of her career-high 17 points
as the Monarchs extended to lead to 47-24.

Ellis was able to close within 15 at the end of the third
quarter.

Balthazor knocked down her second three-pointer of the game
to open the fourth quarter as TMP took a 50-32 lead.

Ellis was able to cut the gap to 16 twice in the fourth
quarter but the Monarchs were took much as they claimed the 56-38 win.

Allen led three in double-figures for TMP with 17 points.
Balthazor added 13 and Hamel finished with 10 points.

Friday’s boys matchup was a game of runs that saw the
Monarchs lead by as many as 10 in the second half and hold off Ellis for the 59-56
win.

TMP (6-3, 3-1 MCL) came out firing on all cylinders and
built a seven-point first quarter lead at 14-7 on a Hayden Brown three-pointer.

After an Ellis timeout the Railers answered with an 11-2 run
to end the quarter as Daniel Eck dropped in a jumper at the buzzer to give Ellis
the 18-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Jackson Schulte and Dylan Werth combined to score the first
eight points of the second quarter and then Jace Wentling capped off the 10-0
run putting TMP up 26-18. But Ellis had an answer.

The Railers strung together a 10-2 run over the own tying
the game at 28 before the Monarchs scored six straight.

The final field goal came on a Kade Harris steal and layup
with one second left in the first half putting TMP up 36-28 at the break.

Werth scored back-to-back field goals opening the second
half and Wentling added another bucket extending the lead to a game-high at
40-30 but Ellis wouldn’t go away.

Down 42-32 the Railers finished the third quarter and opened
the fourth quarter on a 8-3 run to cut the TMP lead to 45-40.

The game got tight down the stretch as Ellis’ Brady Frickey
knocked down four three pointers in the quarter, the last one cutting TMP’s lead
to just one at 57-56 but TMP’s Lucas Lang sealed the game at the free throw
line as TMP came away with the 59-56 win.

Werth recorded his third career double-double with 16 points
and 14 rebounds. Jackson Schulte scored in double-figures for the sixth time in
seven games with 11 points.

Frickey led all scorers with 24 for Ellis.

🏀TMP sweeps Ellis in Battle of Big Creek

Hays High wrapped up three straight Western Athletic Conference games to open 2021, and four straight since before winter break, whey they hosted Garden City on Friday night.

A big second half by Garden City kept the Buffaloes at the top of the Western Athletic Conference standings as they beat Hays High 56-42.

The Indians led by five twice in the first half. One of the occasions came after an 11-0 run in the second quarter. The Indians had the ball twice up five but could not add to their lead at 18-13. The second quarter belonged to Hays holding Garden City to just two points.

The second half belonged to the Buffaloes. Garden City went 0-5 behind the three point line in the first half. The second half the rim opened up and they made five of seven attempts. Garden City also made their free throws, going 17 of 21 from the stripe. Senior Keyhana Turner made all 13 of her attempts on the way to a game and season high 19 points.

Garden City outscored the Indians 41-24 in the second half for the win.

Jersey Johnson led the Indians with a career high 14 points. Garden City put three in double figures.&nbsp;

The Indians drop to 2-6 on the year and 1-3 in the WAC. Garden City leads the conference at 3-0 and is 3-1 on the year.

A 16-4 run to start the second quarter provided the cushion Hays High needed in a 70-53 victory over Garden City. The Indians trailed just twice at 2-0 and 4-2. A quick 10-0 run for Hays forced Garden City to take a timeout. The Indians would never trail again.

Hays led by nine on several occasions including halftime at 33-24. Garden City's best opportunity to take the lead back came midway through the third quarter when the Buffaloes possessed the ball trailing 37-33, but the Indians turned them away at the basket.

Hays improves to 8-0 on the year and leads the conference race at 4-0. Garden City falls to 1-3 and 1-2.

🏀 Hays boys, Garden City girls pull away in fourth quarter

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– In accordance with Big 12 Conference men’s basketball interruption guidelines, the Iowa State at Kansas game scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 16, has been postponed due to COVID-19 protocols within the Iowa State program.

The institutions will work with the conference to reschedule.

For the first time this season the TMP-Marian basketball teams are at home as they play host to the Ellis Railroaders in the Battle of Big Creek.

The Fort Hays State men's basketball game with Missouri Western scheduled for Saturday at 4:00 pm at Gross Coliseum has been postponed.

The Griffons have announced that the men's program has paused full team activities due to positive COVID-19 results among its Tier 1 personnel.  Tier 1 personnel include student-athletes, coaches and any staff member whose job requires close regular contact.

The 16th-rankded Griffons lost 75-67 at Nebraska-Kearney Thursday.&nbsp;

The FHSU women's game with Missouri Western scheduled for 2:00 pm Saturday is still on as planned. The Griffons have taken rapid COVID tests and will do another round of testing Friday. A final determination on the game will be made Saturday morning.

TOPEKA, Kan.—During a regular scheduled KSHSAA Executive Board meeting January 13 and 14, the Executive Board called for a special meeting of the KSHSAA Board of Directors, January 20, at 2:00 p.m.

The agenda item to be discussed by the BOD: Beginning January 29 until the end of winter activities regular season, a maximum of four spectators per participant will be permitted with appropriate social distancing required. Local school districts may choose to have stricter limitations based on seating and local health department guideline.

The January 20th meeting will be a virtual meeting and can be viewed on the KSHSAA YouTube site.

KSHSAA to consider increasing spectator per participant at upcoming meeting

HAYS – Fort Hays State rallied from a 12-point second half
deficit and tied No. 3 Northwest Missouri State with just under six minutes to
play but the Bearcats outscored the Tigers 15-2 the rest of the way for a 64-51
win Thursday night at Gross Coliseum.

The Bearcats (7-1, 7-1 MIAA) raced out to an early 14-4 lead
but the Tigers closed the gap to five with a little over six minutes to play in
the first half but Trevor Hudgins 3-pointer at the horn pushed the Northwest
lead to 31-21 at halftime.

The scored the first basket of the second half to go up 12.
The Tigers (3-5, 3-5 MIAA) closed within in five on back-to-back Gilbert Peters
baskets with 12 minutes to play.

Northwest scored the next seven to go up 12 but the FHSU
responded with a 13-1 run and tied the game on a Quinten Rock jumper with 5:51
to play.

Jordan Pumphrey triggered the run with his first 3-poitner since the season opener against Washburn. Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;added an old-fashioned 3-point play then added a stick-back basket to trim the margin to four. After an NWMSU free throw, Rock&nbsp; made a 3-pointer which trimmed the lead to two, then following a Bearcat offensive foul, Rock made a driving runner to tie the game 49-49.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Tigers were held to two free throws the rest of the way,
missing their last eight shots.

Rock was held to 1-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc but led
the Tigers with 12 points. Kaleb Hammeke scored 11 and Peters added 10.

Jared Vitzum was held to five points but led FHSU with seven
rebounds. VItztum, Rock and Hammeke were a combined 2-of-15 from beyond the
arc.

The Tigers are back at home Saturday afternoon against No.
16 Missouri Western State at 4:00 pm.

🏀 Tigers upset bid comes up short against 3rd-ranked Bearcats

HAYS - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team scored the first 11 points and never led by less than five and cruised to a 74-49 win over Northwest Missouri State Thursday at Gross Coliseum.

After the Bearcats scored six straight to pull within 11-6, the Tigers scored nine straight to to push the lead to 16.

FHSU (6-2, 6-2 MIAA) scored the last seven points of the second quarter capped by a Jaden Hobbs 3-poitner at the horn. The scored the first six points of the third quarter and led by as many as 34 in the second half.

Whitney Randall opened the scoring with a 3-pointer from the top of the key just 10 seconds into the contest. The senior went on to lead the team with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her second career double-double. The Alva, Okla. native hit 4-of-7 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line.

Jaden Hobbs hit her first five threes and finished with 17 points. Olivia Hollenbeck added 12.

Mia Stillman led the Bearcats (3-4, 3-4 MIAA) with 10 pionts off the bench.

Fort Hays State is back at home Saturday afternoon against Missouri Western State at 2:00 pm.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The new general manager of the Denver Broncos is 14-year Minnesota Vikings executive George Paton. 

He will report to John Elway who is keeping his title as president of football operations as he transitions out of the GM role he's had for the last decade. 

Paton was among five candidates who interviewed for the job after Elway announced he was taking on more of an overseer's role at age 60. 

Paton will be in charge of the draft, free agency and the roster for the Broncos but bigger decisions facing the franchise will still be run past Elway.

MANHATTAN, Kansas –&nbsp;Kansas State will kick off the 2021 season on September 4 against Stanford at AT&amp;T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, as the two teams have been chosen for the 2021 Allstate Kickoff Classic, which annually hosts the premier season-opening contest in college football.

“We were honored when AT&amp;T Stadium contacted us about potentially playing in this prestigious game,” Athletics Director Gene Taylor said. “The idea of taking a home game away from Manhattan and Bill Snyder Family Stadium is a big decision, and as a staff and university, we feel that it is an opportunity that we could not pass up.

“Our student-athletes will have the opportunity to play in one of the world’s finest venues, and Kansas State University and our football program will be in the national spotlight. Our fans have always enjoyed traveling to Arlington, and of course the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex is one of our top markets for out of state graduates, and the 7,000-plus alums in the area will have the opportunity to support our team in person.”

The game will be the 12th contest to kick-off the college football season, the first as the Allstate Kickoff Classic and will mark the Wildcats’ second appearance at the venue.&nbsp;Past kickoff games in AT&amp;T Stadium have included some of the nation’s best programs such as Alabama, Michigan, Auburn, Wisconsin, LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon and Florida, among others.&nbsp; “We’re very excited to welcome a terrific new partner in Allstate as the premier sponsor of this iconic game that will kick off the 2021 college football season,” said Stephen Jones, Chief Operating Officer of the Dallas Cowboys. “Here in Texas and across the country, the return of college football each year is a very special time. The Wildcats will be making their fourth appearance in the DFW area in non-conference games following Cotton Bowl appearances in 1997, 2001 and 2012.

Myers, president of Kansas State University. “K-State has nearly 15,000 alumni and friends in Texas, with half of those in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. With the season opener being moved to Arlington, the Wildcats will still have seven additional home games in Manhattan in 2021, including non-conference matchups with Southern Illinois (9/11) and Nevada (9/18), and five Big 12 home contests. The full schedule with dates and ticket information will be announced in the coming months. “Playing a quality opponent such as Stanford in one of the world’s top sporting venues is a chance for us to showcase our program to recruits all over the country,” Head Coach Chris Klieman said. “I know our players are excited for the challenge and the opportunity that it presents.”

🏈 K-State to open 2021 season in Allstate Kickoff Classic

HOXIE – The TMP-Marian girls and boys basketball teams split
a road doubleheader with the Hoxie Indians Tuesday.

The TMP Lady Monarchs outscored Hoxie 30-12 in the second
half on their way to a 52-22 win over the Indians.

The game was close early, after TMP opened the game on a 5-2
run Hoxie was able to tie the game with a three-pointer but Sophia Balthazor
answered with a three of her own to put TMP up 8-5. 

The three also sparked a 10-2 run that was bookended by a
pair of Balthazor three’s propelling TMP to a 15-8 first quarter lead.

The second quarter was a low scoring affair that saw TMP’s
Jaci VonLintel score all seven of the Monarchs points in the quarter as the outscored
Hoxie 7-3. TMP led 22-10 at the halftime break.

Hoxie scored five straight points to open the second half
and cut the Monarch lead to seven at 22-15. But TMP had an answer. The put
together a 26-2 run to end the third quarter and begin the fourth to take a
commanding 48-17 lead late in the fourth quarter.

TMP improved to 6-1 and 3-0 in the Mid-Continent League with
the 52-22 win. They also earned their fifth win in-a-row.

Emilee Lane scored in double figures for a third straight
game with 18 points. Jaci VonLintel and Sophia Balthazor each added 10 points.

The boys game featured a pair of unbeaten teams in the MCL
and the Monarchs were able to erase a double-digit deficit it wasn’t enough as
they fall 60-54.

The Monarchs got off to a slow start offensively and that
allowed Hoxie to build an early lead. They led 6-2 to open the game before TMP
tied the game at six and again at eight. Hoxie led after one quarter 10-8.

The Indians opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run and double
up the Monarchs at 20-10. They took their largest lead of the first half at
24-12 before TMP score the final six points of the first half to trial 24-18 at
the break.

The Monarchs were able to chip away at the Hoxie lead in the
second half and even took a one-point lead at 35-34 on a Jackson Schulte
three-pointer. But the lead would be short-lived and the only lead of the game
for TMP.

The Monarchs did tie the game at 42 early in the fourth
quarter but Hoxie scored six straight to extend the lead to 48-42.

TMP hung tight was Hoxie down the stretch in the fourth
quarter until Hoxie outscored TMP 10-2 in the final minutes of the game to take
a 60-51 lead. TMP got a late three to make it 60-54 Hoxie.

Hoxie’s Harlan Ohbioha led all scorers with 34 points. The seven-footer
added 10 rebounds and blocked seven shots.

TMP’s Jackson Schulte paced the Monarchs with 22 points.

TMP drops 5-2 and 2-1 in the MCL. Hoxie improves to 6-0 and 3-0
in the MCL.

🏀 TMP splits doubleheader with Hoxie

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma State’s talented young squad is growing up.

Cade Cunningham scored 18 points, and the Cowboys held off a late rally to beat No. 6 Kansas 75-70 on Tuesday night.

Kansas trailed by three in the closing seconds and had possession, but Oklahoma State’s Bryce Williams stole the inbounds pass, drove the length of the floor and and dunked as time expired.

The Cowboys blew a 19-point lead in a loss to West Virginia eight days earlier and squandered a 16-point lead in the second half of this one before scoring the game’s final eight points.

“This is what the process looks like,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton said. “It doesn’t always happen immediately. It’s not easy.”

Williams scored 17 points and Avery Anderson III added 14 for the Cowboys (9-3, 3-3 Big 12). It was the fifth time in the past eight tries that Oklahoma State has beaten the Jayhawks at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

David McCormack scored a season-high 24 points for Kansas (10-3, 4-2). But the Jayhawks struggled with shot selection and made 5 of 21 3-pointers.

“I’m disappointed,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “We didn’t deserve to win, but certainly, we put ourselves in position that we could have won, and I thought our guys did compete and tried really hard for a stretch of the game, especially late.”

On one first-half possession, Cunningham collected a rebound, then delivered a perfect left-handed bounce pass about half the length of the court to a streaking Anderson, who made a layup and was fouled. Anderson’s free throw put Oklahoma State ahead 43-30 with 2:36 left in the first half. Cunningham scored 14 points in the first half to help the Cowboys lead 46-35 at the break.

Kansas battled back, slowing the Cowboys with a triangle-and-two zone defense. Two layups by Marcus Garrett put the Jayhawks up 68-67. McCormack scored over Cunningham to put Kansas ahead 70-67 with 1:21 to play.

Oklahoma State’s Isaac Likekele hit a three with a minute to go to tie the game at 70.

“If Likekele doesn’t make that shot, we win the game,” Self said.

Garrett drove again, but this time, Cunningham blocked him, then found a teammate with a wild save. The fast break led to a made layup by Rondel Walker, who was fouled. His free throw put the Cowboys ahead 73-70.

Garrett missed a 3-pointer, and Oklahoma State got the ball in a scramble and called timeout with 17.8 seconds left. Williams missed the free throw to set up the final sequence for Kansas.

Ochai Agbaji missed two 3-pointers, but the ball went out of bounds off Oklahoma State with 4.2 seconds to play, setting up Williams’ steal.

The Cowboys were prepared to handle Kansas’ surge after their tough loss to West Virginia.

“We just kept saying we’ve been there before,” Williams said. “Give credit to Kansas. They’re one of the top teams in the country for a reason. They’re going to make their runs, they’re going to make shots, get stops, things like that. So you can’t hang your head when they do what they are supposed to do.”

Kansas: The Jayhawks suffered their second Big 12 loss and are in danger of falling out of reach of league leaders Baylor and Texas — both unbeaten in conference play.

“Certainly, it’s getting to the point where there’s less than zero margin for error moving forward,” Self said.

Oklahoma State: The Cowboys already claimed a nice win at Texas Tech on Jan. 2, but this one is even bigger. Cunningham showed he can rise up against the big-time teams, and the Cowboys showed they can support him.

Self said Kansas freshman Bryce Thompson broke a finger in a scrum and will be out for a while. Self also said Tyon Grant-Foster suffered a shoulder injury. He only played one minute.

McCormack on Williams’ steal in the closing seconds: “Bryce is just -- he has a high IQ for the game, so yeah, I would say that was on him being actively aware of what was going on on the court and making the right read.”

Walker, a 6-foot-4 freshman guard, had eight points and 10 rebounds. Kansas freshman Jalen Wilson, who had averaged 14.7 points per game, finished with four on 2-for-7 shooting in 32 minutes.

Kansas hosts struggling Iowa State on Saturday.

🏀 Jayhawks comeback falls short at Oklahoma State

Hays continued a stretch of three consecutive conference games to open 2021 with a trip to Great Bend on Tuesday.

Hays jumped out to a 10-0 lead over the first three minutes of the game and led wire to wire for their second win of the season. Re Green hit a three pointer to spark the game's first run that eventually forced a Great Bend time out.

The Indians never led by less that three points the entire game at 3-0, 10-7 and 14-11. The Panthers cut the lead down to 14-11 to open the second quarter but Hays held them scoreless for the next four minutes. The Indians established their double digit lead once again on a 12-3 run and never led by less than ten rest of the way.

Hays opened the second half on a 6-0 run to push the lead to 16. Rest of the quarter saw Great Bend whittle the lead back down to ten at the end of the third quarter 38-28.

Great Bend though never got their offense going in the fourth as the Indians held the Panthers to just six fourth quarter points. The Indians scored in double figures in all four quarter for a 48-34 victory.

Aleyia Ruder led the Indians with 13. Carly Lang scored a season high 12 while Re Green grabbed a career high and game high 11 rebounds

Hays improves to 2-5 on the year and are now 1-2 in the Western Athletic Conference. Great Bend falls to 3-4 and 0-2.

The Indians were never threatened in the second half leading by 27 at the end of three quarters. Hays kept the clock running for the final four minutes of the game when they pushed the lead to thirty and cruised to a 51-24 win.

Jace Linenberger led the Indians with 14 points and TJ Nunnery scored 1o. The Indians improved to 7-0 on the year and 3-0 in WAC play. Great Bend falls to 3-4 and 0-2.&nbsp;
