🏀 📻 No. 11 Tiger women host Griffions in third home game in five days

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - What made the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL over the past three years had been his uncanny ability to quickly read the defense, settle on the right read and allow his otherworldly arm do the rest.

The Buccaneers didn’t even give him time to skim their defense in the Super Bowl.

Whether pushing around the makeshift Kansas City offensive line or blitzing what had been the best QB against the blitz all season, the defense of Tampa Bay coordinator Todd Bowles made life miserable for Mahomes on Sunday night. He was 26 of 49 for 270 yards and two interceptions in a 31-9 blowout that denied the Chiefs back-to-back titles.

“That’s the worst I’ve been beaten in a long time,” Mahomes said, “but I’m proud of the way the guys fought.”

It was the first time Mahomes, who led the Chiefs to their first championship in five decades last season, lost a game he started by more than one possession since Nov. 19, 2016, when Texas Tech fell 66-10 to Iowa State.

Just like that night, Mahomes was left hobbling off the field, the beating he endured from Tampa Bay capping a playoffs in which he sustained a concussion against Cleveland and a turf toe injury that will likely require surgery.

“They had a good game plan,” said Mahomes, whose quarterback rating of 52.3 was by far the worst of his career. “They took away all our deep stuff. They took away the sideline. They did a good job routing to the football and making tackles. We weren’t executing early. I had some miscues. Guys weren’t on the same page.

“But credit to them, man, they played a heck of a game offensively and defensively and they beat us.”

The biggest reason for his struggles, though? The only player on his offensive line in the same position he started the season was Austin Reiter, and the center didn’t fare a whole lot better than the rest of his teammates.

Guard Kelechi Osemele tore up both of his knees early in the season. Right tackle Mitchell Schwartz hurt his back midway through the year. Left tackle Eric Fisher tore his Achilles tendon in the AFC title game. And all that happened after Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and third-round pick Lucas Niang opted out because of COVID-19.

Their replacement offensive line of career backups and journeyman was no match for Tampa Bay’s cavalcade of stars.

“We just weren’t on the same page,” Mahomes said. “I wasn’t getting the ball out on time. The receivers were running routes not exactly where I thought they would be at, and the offensive line — they were good sometimes and sometimes they let guys through. When you’re playing a defense like that, you have to be on the same page.”

The Buccaneers set the tone against the Chiefs on their opening defensive series, when Shaq Barrett went unblocked to help foil the drive. Later in the quarter, Jason Pierre-Paul got his big mitt on a pass to help force another punt, and Barrett was at it again by forcing a throwaway that led to Kansas City’s second field goal later in the first half.

Mahomes came into the game with 17 touchdown passes and no interceptions against extra pressure this season, but he missed his first six throws with an interception against the blitzing Buccaneers on Sunday night.

The first time Mahomes did have time to throw? Travis Kelce dropped a third-down pass.

The first-half numbers were striking: Mahomes was 9 of 19 for 67 yards, while Tampa Bay counterpart Tom Brady had dominated the Chiefs defense for 140 yards passing and three TDs in staking the Buccaneers to a 21-6 lead.

“Listen, Todd had a good plan,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, “but I could have done a whole lot better job of putting these guys in a better position to make plays. My guys busted their tails. It just didn’t work for us.”

Tampa Bay soon pushed the lead to 28-9 and Kansas City’s potent offense was powerless to answer.

Barrett ran right through left tackle Mike Remmers for a sack early in the second half, and more pressure led to Mahomes chucking up a pass that was picked by Antoine Winfield Jr. In the fourth quarter, Mahomes was flushed so far out of the pocket on fourth down that he had to heave the ball about 50 yards just to get it to the end zone.

The ball wound up bouncing off running back Darrel Williams’ facemask and falling to the turf incomplete.

“To the last snap,” Reid said, “he was trying to win that football game.”

It was just that kind of night for Mahomes. It was that kind of night for the Chiefs.

The Tiger defense held UCO to just one field goal on 13 shot attempts over the first eight minutes, 40 seconds of the frame. Fort Hays State took advantage on the offensive end, outscoring the Bronchos 23-3 over that stretch while hitting 9-of-10 from the floor.

McClung, the Big 12 leading scorer, is averaging 25 points in his last four road games and capped off the game with a breakaway dunk in the final minute to put away Kansas State.

Kevin McCullar added 15 and Kyler Edwards had 13 points for the Red Raiders (14-5, 6-4 Big 12).

“I was pleased with our poise and thought we responded well to their big shots,” Texas Tech head coach Chris Beard said. “I think it was nice to see some other guys step up for us, too.”

The Red Raiders played most of the game their second leading scorer, Terrence Shannon Jr., who was out with an ankle injury. He played only 11 minutes and had two points.

“He just had a sore ankle and the idea was to give him some rest,” Beard said. “I expect him to be back next game and hope the injury doesn’t linger.”

Texas Tech made its final seven field goals of the game and went 24-for-51 (51%) from the field while the Wildcats were 20-for-44 (45%).

Mike McGuirl and Nijel Pack led the way for Kansas State (5-15, 1-10) with 16 points each and Kaosi Ezeagu had 10.

“I’m proud of our guys,” Kansas State head coach Bruce Weber said. “I wanted to win, but if they can do this every game we’ll have a chance down the stretch.”

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State survived a tight battle with Central Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 6) at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers edged the Bronchos 84-82 to complete a perfect three-game homestand, moving to 7-8 on the season. UCO moved to 7-6. Down just one point at halftime, the Tigers had to keep the Bronchos from running away with the second half a few times. UCO extended its lead to nine before the Tigers used a 9-2 burst to get the margin back to two. UCO pushed the lead back to seven three times before FHSU brought it back to two again with 8:46 to play. The UCO lead reached seven once more before the Tigers finally tied the game with an 8-1 run, capped with 4:46 remaining in the game.

Even with the surge, the Bronchos scored the next four and took a 73-69 lead, but the Tigers had one more push to flip the game in their favor. FHSU went on a 7-2 run to finally take their first lead of the second half, capped by a&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5859">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;3-point field goal putting the Tigers up 76-75. The teams then traded two points three straight trips before a&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5868">Quinten Rock</a>&nbsp;3-pointer with a minute to go put the Tigers up two. Miles McBride scored a career-high 29 points, Taz Sherman had a career-best 25 and West Virginia kept pushing all game long, beating No. 23 Kansas 91-79 on Saturday.

The Mountaineers (13-5, 6-3 Big 12) never trailed and got off to a good start in a challenging stretch where they will play six straight opponents that are currently ranked.

Nail-biting finishes have been the norm lately for the Mountaineers, who needed some late free throws to&nbsp;<a href="https://collegebasketball.ap.org/article/no-17-mountaineers-overcome-slow-start-beat-iowa-state" target="_blank">hold off Iowa State</a>&nbsp;on the road on Tuesday. Kansas (12-7, 6-5) lost its fifth straight road game. The Jayhawks couldn’t rely on a barrage of 3-pointers as they did in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/west-virginia-mountaineers-mens-basketball-kansas-jayhawks-mens-basketball-david-mccormack-christian-braun-lawrence-bde778775de12142b21dbf20d4b3c3b6">beating West Virginia at hom</a>&nbsp;e on Dec. 22 — they were 7 of 20 from long distance on Saturday.

“We knew they were going to make a run at some point,” McBride said. “But we weathered the storm and gave it back to them, honestly.”

McBride also had seven rebounds and eight assists. Derek Culver had 19 points and nine rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season.

Trailing by 10 at halftime, Kansas forced several turnovers to tie it. But McBride and Sherman were dominant, combining to score 33 points in the second half while shooting 10 of 15.

“We usually don’t have just guards go whip us,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “That’s what happened tonight with those two. McBride totally dominated the game. He was a first-team all-American tonight the way he played. Made every big shot. Of course, Sherman had a big game. We knew they were keys looking back.

“Those guys just kind of took over down the stretch.”

McBride broke out of a mini-slump that saw him held to nine points in the previous two games. The sophomore hit a 3-pointer with 14:15 left to put West Virginia ahead to stay.

“It’s all about preparation,” said McBride, who was 8 of 15 from the floor, including four 3-pointers, and made all nine foul shots. “When I come into a game more prepared and a little bit more motivated, I think that every shot is going.”

Emmitt Matthews made a 3-pointer and Sherman followed with a three-point play to put West Virginia ahead 84-71 with 2:30 left. The Mountaineers made five of their last seven shots.

As well as the Mountaineers performed on the offensive end, their effort was set up by defense. The Jayhawks didn’t make a field goal over a three-minute stretch near the end of the game.

“That was our best defensive performance of the year,” West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said.

Marcus Garrett led the Jayhawks with 18 points. David McCormack added 17 points and nine rebounds, while Jalen Wilson had 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Kansas: Self fell to 3-6 against West Virginia in Morgantown. The Jayhawks have lost five of their last seven games and will need a solid push over the final month to improve their NCAA Tournament seeding with games still remaining against ranked opponents Baylor, Texas and Texas Tech.

UCO and FHSU will meet again next week on Wednesday (Feb. 10) in Edmond in a game that was postponed earlier this season. That game will be played at 3:30 pm to allow the Tigers travel time and rest for their game at Rogers State the following evening in Claremore. The Tigers are coming off a 69-64 win over Newman University on Thursday night in Hays. 🏀📻 No. 11 FHSU women continue homestand against UCO

SMITH CENTER – The TMP-Marian Monarchs earned a doubleheader sweep of Smith
Center Friday night.

The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs used a 20-2 second half run as
they rallied from down nine on their way to a 64-52 win.

The Smith Center Lady Red jumped out to an early 9-3 first
quarter lead and they led by five twice in the first quarter before TMP put together
a 10-2 run to end the first quarter with a 18-16 lead.

The Monarchs led by four, at 22-18 early in the second quarter
but Smith Center was able to string together a 12-1 run to lead by seven at
30-23. TMP trailed by seven at the halftime break 34-27.

Midway through the third quarter Smith Center led 43-38 before
TMP went on a 20-2 run to end the third quarter and open the fourth quarter
putting TMP on top 58-45.

Smith Center briefly closed the deficit to eight but the
Monarchs were able to pull away from the 64-52 win.

TMP’s Jaci VonLintel scored a team-high 18 points and
collected eight rebounds. Kyleigh Allen added 14 points and Emilee Lane and
Megan Hamel each finished with 12 points from TMP.

The Monarchs improve to 11-3 and 5-1 in the MCL with the
win.

The TMP boys used a 29-4 run to end the first quarter and in
the second quarter as they cruised to the win.

The game was tight early with the Monarchs lead by one at
5-4 Jackson Schulte knocked down his first of back-to-back three pointers
giving TMP an 11-6 lead. 

Leading 11-9 the Monarchs scored four straight points to end
the first quarter and then held Smith Center to just four points in the second
quarter while they scored 25 in the quarter, capping off the 29-4 run. TMP led at
halftime 40-13

In the third quarter TMP outscored Smith Center 18-5 to
build a 40-point lead at 58-18. 

TMP led by 41 points through three quarters of action 63-22.

With the continuous clock in the fourth quarter TMP earned
the 68-32 win.

Dylan Werth scored a team-high 14 for TMP and Schulte added
11 points.

TMP improved to 11-4 and 5-1 in the MCL with the win.

LUBBOCK, Texas – Fort Hays State Softball opened its 2021 season on Friday (Feb. 5) at the Lubbock Sports College Invitational. The Tigers won their season opener 6-3 over Texas-Permian Basin before falling 4-1 in their nightcap against West Texas A&amp;M. 🥎 Tigers go 1-1 to start the season

Hays High resumed Western Athletic Conference play for the first time since January 15th by hosting Dodge City Friday night.

Hays led just once against the favorited Dodge City Red Demons. A free throw in the game's first minute put the Indians up 1-0. Dodge City used a 20-2 run that lasted into the second quarter to blow the game open.

Hays would go scoreless for a ten minute stretch of the first half.

Dodge City remained in command through out the second half leading 42-18 after the third quarter and winning 52-26.

Dodge City remains undefeated in WAC play at 4-0. The Red Demons are 13-1 on the year. Hays falls to 5-10 and 1-4 in conference play. The Indians make a trip to Dodge City February 23rd.

Hays High had to fight back from a double digit first quarter deficit for a third straight game to beat Dodge City 44-38 Friday night. Hays led early 3-2 with 5:30 remaining in the first quarter. The Indians wouldn't lead again until the fourth quarter.&nbsp;

Dodge City outscored Hays 14-3 in the first quarter and led by as many as 15 early in the second on the heels of a 20-4 run. The Indians spent the next 20 minutes of the game digging out of that hole.

Trailing 26-15 at halftime the Indians outscored Dodge City 15-9 in the third quarter. Hays drew within two points on an 11-3 run at 32-30 but the Red Demons hit a three to go up five at the end of the third quarter.

After being outscored 14-3 in the first quarter, Hays returned the favor by outscoring the Red Demons 14-3 in the fourth. Hays drew within one point at 37-36 with 5:15 remaining. Dodge City missed their five shots allowing Hays to tie game on a free throw with 2:41 left. The Red Demons led one more time at 38-37 twenty second later.&nbsp;

TJ Nunnery provided the last lead Hays High would need with a left corner three pointer at 40-38. Hays did leave the door open by making just four of ten free throws over the final minute of the game.

With the 44-38 win Hays improves to 15-0 on the year and 5-0 in the WAC. Dodge City falls to 9-5 and 3-1. Hays has the next week off before traveling to Colby.

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid, the son of head coach Andy Reid, was involved in a multi-vehicle crash late Thursday that injured two young children near the team’s training complex adjacent to Arrowhead Stadium. 

The team confirmed in a statement Friday that Britt Reid was involved in the accident but declined additional comment. Local television station KSHB reported that Reid told an officer on the scene that he had “two or three drinks,” according to a search warrant filed just before midnight. Reid then complained of stomach pain and also was taken to an area hospital.

HAYS - Jared Vitztum scored 25 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to help lead Fort Hays State to a 69-64 win over the Newman Jets. It's VItztum's NCAA II leading eighth double-double as the Tigers (6-8, 6-8 MIAA) win their second straight and three of their four games. Newman (2-12, 2-12 MIAA) have lost eight straight.

The game was tight throughout with neither team leading by more six. There were 11 ties and 11 lead changes. Newman's biggest lead was five with 9:24 to play. The Tigers led by six at the 16:13 mark of the second half after holding a 37-36 hafltime advantage.

Newman held a two-point lead with five and half minutes remaining, but a 3-point play by Vitztum put the Tigers in front for good. The Jets closed within two on a three-point play with 25 seconds left but Kaleb Hammeke put the game away by making two free throws five seconds later.&nbsp;

Alvin Thompson added 13 points and five assists and Gilbert Peters chipped in 10 points.

🏃‍♀️ Tigers Rossi wins pentathlon in Wichita

HAYS - The 11th-ranked Fort Hays State women raced out to an 8-0 lead and only trailed once as they ran their winning streak to seven games with a 68-50 win over Newman at Gross Coliseum.

The Jets (3-12, 3-12 MIAA) outscored the Tigers (12-2, 12-2 MIAA) 13-5 to open the second quarter and take a brief 24-23 lead but FHSU answered with a 16-3 run to build a 12-point lead and led 39-29 at halftime.

The TIgers quickly built a 16-point lead early in the third and never led by less than eight the rest of the way.

Whitney Randall led the Tigers with 16 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Cydney Bergmann added 11 points and seven boards.

Fort Hays State is 100-29 all-time when ranked in the WBCA Top 25, including a perfect 4-0 record when ranked 11th. Fort Hays State defeated Newman by 20 points on the road earlier this season, using a season-high 31 points in the third quarter to pull away, 68-48 (12/12/21). The Tigers are&nbsp;19-1 all-time against the Jets, including a perfect 11-0 record at home. Fort Hays State has won each of the last nine meetings, with the lone Newman win coming in 2010. FHSU is 10-1 against the Jets under head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=947">Tony Hobson</a>, including a 6-0 mark at home. All 20 games in series history have been decided by at least 10 points. Fort Hays State is coming off back-to-back wins over No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney last week, helping the Tigers move into a tie for first place in the loss column in the MIAA. Five Tigers scored in double figures in Saturday's home win against the Lopers, just the second time the Tigers have had five different players with 10 or more points this year.&nbsp; <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5845">Cydney Bergmann</a>&nbsp;is averaging 9.3 points and 5.8 rebounds over the last four games.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5850">Whitney Randall</a>&nbsp;continues to lead the team in scoring at home, averaging 16.5 points per game inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. Newman is 3-11 on the year, including losses in each of its last five games. The Jets are 1-4 in road games this season, with the lone road win coming at Washburn in December. Newman ranks last in the MIAA in scoring offense, averaging just 53.2 points per game this season. Their defense is sixth-best in the league, allowing 62.3 points each night. They hit 33.8 percent from the floor, last in the MIAA and 186th out of 202 Division II teams this season. KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5994">Alexandra Hart</a>&nbsp;was named MIAA&nbsp;Field Athlete of the Week after setting the school record in the high jump last week, announced Wednesday (Feb. 3) by the league office. Hart won the high jump competition at Saturday's UNK Charlie Foster Classic after clearing the 5-9.75 bar. The jump is tied for first nationally in Division II and is one of just 12 NCAA DII automatic qualifying marks across the country so far this season. She eclipsed the 14-year-old school record by 0.5 inches. She is the first FHSU women's indoor track and field to earn weekly honors from the MIAA since December 2014 (<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=952">Anna Eigruber</a>). The Tigers are scheduled to return to action this week at the Wichita State Herm Wilson Invitational (Feb. 4-5).&nbsp;&nbsp;
