The FHSU wrestling team kicked off the 2021-22 season with the annual Black and Gold Scrimmage on Saturday night (Oct. 23) with 19 matches. The scrimmage was constructed of two rounds, where the second round consisted of matchups between the winners and losers of the previous round and matches against pre-determined opponents. The Gold team held on to its lead from the very beginning, ending in a narrow one-point margin of 41-40.

Five Tigers won both of their matches during this scrimmage. Broderick Green won each of his matches at 125 pounds by fall, the first in 1:09 over Rhett Kobbes and then 1:39 over Tom VanValkenburg.

Cason Lindsey won his first match at 141/149 pounds in a 4-3 decision over Rhett Edmonson and then scored a 6-0 decision over Cole Zebley, even with Zebley not wrestling in the first round.

Two upperclassmen dominated their weight classes as Anthony Scantlin (157) and Marty Verhaeghe (174/184) each won both of their matches. Scantlin won his first by fall in 57 seconds over Justus Hulse and then won by decision 8-3 over Cody Hicks. Verhaeghe followed in a similar pattern as he won his first match with a fall in 2:48 over Blayze Standley and finished up with a 10-2 major decision over Nick Lucas.

The final Tiger to win both matches was Juan Urbina. He won his first match by technical fall 15-0 over Cody Lambert and wrapped up his night by pinning Clint Herrick in 3:13.

The Tigers will face their first outside competition on Novermber 6th when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri for the Kaufman/Brand/Bayly Open.
