MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–<a>&nbsp;</a>Kansas State head coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman&nbsp;put together the final pieces of his third signing class in Manhattan on Wednesday as two more student-athletes have agreed to be part of the Wildcat football program.

Officially signing on Wednesday were Manhattan defensive tackle&nbsp;Damian Ilalio&nbsp;and Topeka defensive back&nbsp;Desmond Purnell.

Coupled with the early signing period, K-State’s 2021 Signing Class features 16 high school student-athletes.

This year’s class includes 10 players on defense and six on offense. The class is comprised of four defensive backs, three linebackers, two apiece of defensive tackles, offensive linemen and wide receivers, a defensive end, one running back and a quarterback. The state of Kansas led the way with six signees, while there were two from Colorado and two from Georgia.

Of the 16 total signees, five are currently on campus and will take part in spring practices, which begin on Wednesday, March 3.

The players from this year’s class that are currently enrolled include: wide receiver&nbsp;Brenen Hawkins, linebacker&nbsp;DaVonte Pritchard, quarterback&nbsp;Jake Rubley, offensive lineman&nbsp;Austin Weiner&nbsp;and defensive tackle&nbsp;Brayden Wood. HAYS, Kan. - Wednesday, February 3, 2021 is National Signing Day as Fort Hays State head football coach Chris Brown&nbsp;and the Tiger football coaching staff announce signings for the 2021 season. HAYS, Kan. - Friday's Fort Hays State wrestling dual at No. 3 Central Oklahoma has been postponed due to health and safety protocols. FHSU and UCO are currently working to reschedule the contest. The No. 19 Tigers are next scheduled to hit the mat on February 11 when they face off with No. 2 Nebraska-Kearney beginning at 6 p.m. in Kearney, Neb.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The TMP-Marian Monarch boys and girls basketball team split
a home doubleheader with the Trego Golden Eagles Tuesday at Al Billinger Fieldhouse
in Hays.

The Trego Golden Eagles outscored TMP 10-3 in overtime as
they pulled away for the 39-32 win Tuesday.

Trego, ranked eighth in the 2A coaches poll this week, was able to jump out to an early 10-2 lead after TMP
struggled to get going on offense. The Monarchs were just 2-of-12 from the
floor to start the game and they trailed 12-4 after the first quarter.

Trego took a 10-point lead to open the second quarter at
14-4. Down 10 TMP’s Jaci VonLintel scored five straight sparking a 12-1 run putting
TMP on top 16-15. Kassidi Yost’s three free throws gave TMP the lead with just
over three minutes left in the first half.

Trego scored seven straight over the final two minutes of
the first half and took a 22-16 lead into the halftime break.

Megan Hamel scored six of the first seven points of the second
half as TMP took a 23-22 lead. 

Trego outscored TMP 7-2 over the final four minutes of the
quarter to take a 29-26 lead into the fourth quarter.

TMP held Trego scoreless in the fourth quarter and tied the
game at 29 to force overtime.

In the overtime TMP was held to a Sophia Balthazor
three-pointer while the Golden Eagles outscored TMP 10-3 on their way to a
39-32 win.

Balthazor scored a team-high 12 points for TMP.

Emma Day and Lili Shubert each scored 10 for Trego.

TMP dropped to 10-3 and 4-1 in the MCL. Trego is 11-3 and
5-1 in the MCL.

The TMP boys used a 15-3 first-half run to build a
double-digit lead and then held off a late Trego rally on their way to a 51-42
win Tuesday.

TMP jumped out to a 18-9 first quarter lead. Jackson Schulte
and Dylan Werth combined to score 16 first quarter points for TMP and Kade
Harris’ buzzer beating layup gave TMP the nine-point lead.

The Monarchs built their largest lead of the game at 12, 21-9
to open the second quarter.

Trego outscored the Monarchs 12-3 the rest of the way in the
first half, as the Monarchs struggled with foul trouble, cutting TMP’s lead to
24-21 at halftime.

Trego cut the deficit to one at 24-23 to open the second half
before Lucas Lang hit his second straight three pointer putting TMP back on top
by three at 27-23. Werth scored four in-a-row and Harris added a jumper before Schulte
scored five straight helping TMP lead by nine at 38-29. 

The Monarchs led 38-33 through three quarters.

In the fourth quarter Trego briefly closed within four at
42-38 but the Monarchs made just enough free throws in the final minutes on
their way to the 51-42 win.

Schulte led TMP was 24 points and Werth added 11 points. &nbsp;

Charlie Russell led Trego with 11 points.

TMP improves to 10-4 and 4-1 in the MCL.

🏀TMP splits MCL doubleheader with Trego

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Christian Braun’s big game for Kansas against Kansas State last season was overshadowed by an ugly game-ending melee.

The Jayhawks were able to enjoy his sequel a little more.

Braun hit four 3-pointers and scored 18 points, half of them during an 18-3 charge midway through the second half, and the 23rd-ranked Jayhawks finally started to show some offensive moxie Tuesday night in a 74-51 victory over the Wildcats.

“Always feels good to beat Kansas State,” said Braun, who grew up in Burlington, Kansas. “This one was a little different this year. We’re trying to get things turned around, trying to get going on the right track. Feels good to get a win.”

David McCormack also had 18 points and Ochai Agbaji added 15 for the Jayhawks (12-6, 6-4 Big 12), who dropped four of their previous five games, including a blowout loss at No. 11 Tennessee over the weekend.

“I thought we got good shots. I didn’t think we shot it well — I thought we took some quick ones — but I thought we moved the ball pretty well,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “Defensively, we tried hard for the most part. I thought we rebounded OK. It was much better and we still didn’t make shots, but it was still much better.”

Kansas improved to 200-94 against the Wildcats (5-14, 1-9), the most wins by any Division I school over another in men’s college hoops. The Jayhawks have won 15 consecutive games against their longtime rivals in Allen Fieldhouse.

Mike McGuirl scored 10 points for Kansas State, but was just 3 of 10 from the field and 1 for 6 from beyond the arc. Nijel Pack followed his 26-point outburst against Texas A&amp;M with 10, and committed four turnovers in his Phog debut.

The result was the Wildcats’ ninth consecutive loss dating to Dec. 29. All but two have been by double figures.

“Every team struggles,” Pack said. “I mean, we’re just going through that slump right now. We just have to put in more work. That’s the only thing you can do. You can’t control the uncontrollables. We just have to put in the work.”

Neither team was particularly pretty on offense in the first half. At least Kansas played a little defense.

The Jayhawks forced the scoring-challenged Wildcats into seven first-half turnovers, held them to just 2 of 9 from behind the 3-point line and forced Kansas State into more airballs (three) than they managed second-chance points (two).

“We’re not putting points up on the board,” McGuirl said. “Our offense is not what it needs to be.”

The result was a 33-25 halftime margin that felt like twice that much.

It didn’t take long before it WAS that much.

Kansas held the Wildcats without a field goal for the first 5 minutes of the second half, then again for another 5-minute stretch. Those long slumps allowed the Jayhawks to put together one of their all-too-familiar runs, an 18-3 scoring binge midway through the second half that resulted in a 56-32 lead with 10 minutes to go.

Braun was the catalyst with back-to-back 3-pointers, but McCormack and Agbaji added dunks and Mitch Lightfoot made a couple of free throws as the Jayhawks’ offense got in sync — at least for a stretch — for the first time in weeks.

“It’s definitely encouraging,” McCormack said. “A positivity booster. Gets us in the flow of the game, gets people touches they need to get back in their groove. It’s a game to get our feet wet, to get back to how we know how to do things.”

Kansas State finished with 13 turnovers, went 5 of 21 from 3-point range and couldn’t keep the bigger Jayhawks off the glass at either end of the floor. Sure, the Wildcats are starting three freshman and play a fourth off the bench, but the growing pains have been painfully obvious for coach Bruce Weber since the new year began.

Kansas only committed six turnovers and three of them came from Marcus Garrett, their primary ballhandler, who only played 24 minutes. That’s a good sign the Jayhawks are starting to execute better on the offensive end. The 74 points were their most since a 93-64 win over TCU on Jan. 6.

Hays High made a rare trip to Scott City on Tuesday evening. The last recorded game in Scott City between the Indians and the Beavers was in 1960. The two had met up since then in the Colby Orange &amp; Black Classic. Girls Hays 38 - Scott City 33 Hays High scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed on their way to a fifth win on the season. The Indians led by as many as eight points in the second quarter and took a 21-17 lead into halftime.

Just like the beginning of the game Hays scored the first seven points of the half. The second half run built the advantage to a game high eleven points at 28-17.

However the Hays offense would go cold over the next ten plus minutes, scoring just three free throws. The time allowed Scott City to outscore Hays 14-3 and tie the game at 31 with 1:40 remaining. Carly Lang though scored the Indians' last seven points breaking the 31 all tie with a pair of free throws and then broke a 33 all score with the game final field goal at the :45 mark.

Hays High came back from a second consecutive double digit first half deficit to pick up a win on Tuesday in Scott City 57-35. Scott City made each of their first five shots which included three from behind the three point line for a 13-3 lead. The Indians used the remaining 3:30 of the first quarter to go on a 10-0 run and tie the contest at 13 through eight minutes.

The Beavers regained the lead one final time by opening the second quarter with a three pointer at 16-13. The Indians led 2-0 at the beginning of the game on a TJ Nunnery alley-oop dunk. They took over the lead with 5:20 remaining in the second quarter at 17-16 and never trailed again. Hays outscored the Beavers 40-19 rest of the game.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas football head coach Les Miles was pursuing a veteran offensive coordinator with a proven track record in the NFL and Power 5 ranks. Tuesday, he found his man in Mike DeBord. A former Division I head coach with three-plus decades of coaching experience at the collegiate and professional levels, DeBord has coached more than 50 players who went on to play in the NFL, was the offensive coordinator for a National Championship winning team, and has appeared in 16 bowl games.&nbsp;

DeBord spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Fort Hays State, serving as the Tigers offensive line coach in 1984 then served as Offensive Coordinator in 1985 and 1986 while being in charge of the quarterbacks and wide receivers. “This is a great day for Kansas football,” Miles said. “We are adding a coach with a wealth of experience in Mike. He has squared off with just about every defensive scheme in the book, and has worked within and led several offensive systems. In addition to the qualities he brings as a football coach, he is a man of high character, and will be an outstanding addition to our program as we continue to instill the culture we want in place.&nbsp; Miles continued: “I have had the honor of working alongside Mike before, as have some of the best coaches in college football and the NFL. He makes his fellow coaches better, and will have an instant impact on the Jayhawks.” DeBord has served previously as the offensive coordinator at Michigan (1997-99, 2006-07), Tennessee (2015-16) and Indiana (2017-18), while also serving as Central Michigan’s head coach from 2000 to 2003. He was also an assistant in the NFL with the Chicago Bears (2010-12) and the Seattle Seahawks (2008-09). He has also coached five future NFL quarterbacks as an offensive coordinator, including Tom Brady, Chad Henne, Brian Griese and Drew Henson at Michigan and Joshua Dobbs at Tennessee.&nbsp; During his two years at Indiana in 2017 and 2018, DeBord helped set the stage for the Hoosiers to become one of the top teams in the country this past season. In his first year in Bloomington, Indiana averaged 395.8 yards per game, while scoring 26.8 points per contest. Quarterbacks Richard Lagow and Peyton Ramsey combined to throw for 3,188 yards and 25 touchdowns in DeBord’s first season.&nbsp; In 2018, Indiana’s offense improved even more, averaging 415.2 yards per game and rushing for 1,888 yards as a team. Ramsey threw for 2,875 yards and 19 touchdowns, while DeBord oversaw running back Stevie Scott produce a 1,000-yard rushing season, collecting 1,137 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. At Tennessee, DeBord’s 2016 squad was one of four teams in the conference to end the year in the top half of the SEC in scoring, passing, rushing and total offense. The Volunteers ranked 24th&nbsp;nationally with 36.4 points per game. Dobbs finished the season with 15 touchdown passes and 10 rushing touchdowns, becoming just the third quarterback in the conference’s history to do that.&nbsp; Also that season, the Volunteers scored 473 points and 63 touchdowns – both school records –while totaling 5,768 yards of total offense, which is the second-most in program history.&nbsp; In 2015, Tennessee running back Jalen Hurd rushed for 1,288 yards, and the team finished with 2,908 rushing yards, marking the second-highest total in program history. Hurd was selected in the 3rd&nbsp;round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. DeBord earned his first opportunity as an FBS offensive coordinator in 1997 with the Wolverines, after serving as the program’s offensive line coach for five seasons. In his first season at Michigan, the program went 12-0 and captured the National Championship. DeBord led a balanced offensive attack with Griese as the starter, averaging 201.2 passing yards per game and 187.3 rushing yards a contest. Michigan didn’t score fewer than 20 points in any of its 12 games that season. Following a three-year stint at Michigan where the Wolverines went 52-11 and won three-straight New Year’s Day bowl games, DeBord was hired as the head coach at Central Michigan. In his second season with the Chippewas, the team’s offensive output improved more than 100 yards from his first season. The team averaged 92.4 rushing yards per game in DeBord’s first season, before improving that number to 206.1 yards per game by his third season.&nbsp; In addition to his time in the NFL and as a coordinator in college, DeBord has also spent time coaching at Northwestern, Colorado State and Ball State.&nbsp; DeBord graduated from Manchester College, and was an honorable mention All-American offensive lineman. After two wins over then-ranked No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney last week, the Fort Hays State women's basketball was listed in both national polls released Tuesday (Feb. 2). The Tigers are ranked 11th in the first set of WBCA Division II Coaches rankings released this season, while FHSU is 25th in the latest D2SIDA Media Poll. The Tigers are 11-2 after wins in their last six games, tied for first place in loss column in the MIAA. Fort Hays State is the top-ranked MIAA school in the coaches poll, with Nebraska-Kearney one spot back in 12th and Central Missouri slotted 21st. The Lopers are 12th in this week's media poll, down from fourth last week, while Central Missouri sits in 19th. This is the first set of Division II&nbsp;rankings the Women's Basketball Coaches Association has released this season. The D2SIDA has released five sets of rankings this season, including one preseason poll and four regular season lists.&nbsp; Fort Hays State has now been mentioned in the national polls in nine consecutive seasons and in 10 total campaigns during the team's NCAA Division II era. For a third straight week the Hays High boys are ranked atop
the weekly 5A Kansas Basketball Coaches Association rankings.

The Indians improved to 13-0 Friday with a come from behind
win over Salina Central.

The Hoxie boys remain atop the 2A rankings while Trego
enters the rankings for the first time at number 10.

The Phillipsburg girls are ranked 6th this week
in class 3A. The TMP girls fell out of the top 10 after being ranked the last

The Tigers received 23 points in the balloting process. Central Missouri was picked to win the league after picking up 78 points and seven first-place votes. Washburn is second in the poll after receiving the three remaining first-place votes and 70 points. After the 2020 fall season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tigers are scheduled to open the season March 15-16 when they travel to Owasso, Okla. for the Hillcat Classic. NORTON – The Hoxie Indians had eight individual champions as
they ran away with the Mid-Continent League wrestling tournament in Norton
Friday.

The Indians claimed individual titles at 113 (Wayne Shepard), 120 (Carson Ochs) 126 (Dayton
Bell), 132 (Drew Bell), 145 (Derek Johnson), 160 (Aidan Baalman), 195 (Donovan
Balluch) and 285 (Brandon Baker) while collecting 228 team points. Ellis
finished second as a team with 137.5 points. Smith Center (124.5), Plainville
(107) and Hill City (95.5) rounded out the top five.

Ellis’ Mason Younger
claimed the individual title at 106 pounds while Konnor Pfeifer finished second
at 170 pounds.&nbsp; Mason Gottschalk finished
third at 182 pounds while Jarret Mader (126), Gannon Winter (132), Sam Pyle (138),
