– The La Crosse boys track and field team won three events and finished in first
place at Thursday’s Kiowa County 1A Regional. The Leopards scored 96 points,
outdistancing second place Meade by nine.

The Leopards qualify
for state in 11 events and had three first place finishes. Blake Pierce won the
3200 and 1600 meter runs and the Leopards won the 4x100 meter relay.

The top four in each event qualify for next week's state meet in Wichita, which will be spread out over three days this year due to COVID. 6A and 5A compete on Thursday (May 27), 4A and 3A on Friday (May 28) and 2A and 1A on Saturday (May 29).

SALINA - The Ellis softball team lost 15-4 to Salina-Sacred Heart in Thursday Brookville 2-1A regional.

Due to all of this week's rain, the games were moved to Salina South high school.

Host Ell-Salina defeated Republic County 8-2 in their semifinal game then knocked off the Knights 8-2 to win the regional title.

Ellis ends their season with a 13-7 record.

HAYS - The Hays High baseball scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Andover then got a combined shutout from Dylan Dreiling and Dalton Dale to defeat Valley Center 4-0 to win their own 5A regional and advance to next week's 5A State Tournament in Wichita.

Game 1:&nbsp;Valley Center 4, Kapaun Mr. Carmel 1 Valley Center starter Payton Graham allowed just one run over 6.2 innings as the Hornets beat Kapaun Mt. Carmel 4-1 in the opening game of the day. Jesse Johnson drove two runs in with two outs in the third inning then added another in the top of the seventh for a 4-1 lead.

Valley Center improved to 10-11 with the win. Kapaun's season ends at 13-8.

Game 2: Hays 5, Andover 4 Hays won their semi-final game in dramatic fashion. Hays and Andover were tied at the end of the first and second innings. The Indians jumped ahead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on run scoring singles by Remington Cox and Carson Spray.

Andover tied the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth. Hays ended the sixth with an unusual double play. Valley Center flew out to right field to score a run. However the runner at first left early after tagging up and was called out when the Indians appealed to first base. The run counted and tied the game at four.

The Indians loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with no outs. Garrett Wellbrock scored the game winning run when a grounder to second base was thrown wide of home plate. Dylan Dreiling took the win in relief.

Game 3: Hays 4, Valley Center 0 Hays and Valley Center stayed scoreless threw three innings before Hays scratched a run across in the bottom of the fourth. Remington Cox led the inning off with a double. Noah Weimer scored on a balk call two batters later for a 1-0 lead.

The Indians batted around in the fifth scoring three runs on two hits and four walks. Garrett Wellbrock drove two runs in on a single. Dalyn Schwarz drove in another on a bases loaded walk for a 4-0 advantage.

Dylan Dreiling started game two and picked up the win but was lifted after six innings due to reaching the maximum pitch limit. Dalton Dale faced four batters in the seventh, striking out two, closing down the win.

Hays improves 17-3 on the year and moves on to the state baseball tournament for a 13th time in program history.

⚾ STATE BOUND! Indians win own regional 

HAYS – The TMP/LaCrosse baseball team saw their season come to an
Wednesday in a 7-3 loss to Minneapolis in the 3A TMP Regional at Larks Park in
Hays.

The Monarchs opened the day with a 4-0 win over the top-seed
Larned thanks to an outstanding pitching performance from starter Mark Rack.

Rack recorded his first career shutout allowing just four
hits with two strikeouts and two walks over seven innings. 

Chet Irvin and Nicholas Herrman each drove in a pair of runs
in the win.

Minneapolis got to the regional championship game with a 3-2
walk-off win over Hoisington/Central Plains in the second semifinal.

In the championship game Minneapolis took advantage of a
first inning error to take 1-0 lead. 

Minneapolis added a run on an error in the second inning and
added two more in the bottom of the third inning taking a 4-0 lead. They scored
on a double and an error.

Minneapolis starter Spencer Davidson allowed just three hits
with 11 strikeouts and three walks in five shutout innings and picked up the win
for the Lions.

TMP took advantage of a pair of walks and scored on a passed
ball to cut the Minneapolis lead to 4-1 through five and a half innings.

Minneapolis answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth
inning to take a 7-1 lead into the seventh inning.

The Monarchs attempted to put another late rally, scoring
two runs in the top of the seventh and an error and a Chet Irvin RBI double making
it 7-3 but a pair of groundouts ended TMP’s season with a 7-3 loss.

Jace Wentling finished 3-for-4 at the plate and suffered the loss on the mound. He allowed seven runs, just one earned, in six innings.

Irvin drove in a run with an RBI double and Mark Rack added an RBI single.

⚾ Monarchs come up short in regional finals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals hung around long enough to watch Brewers ace Corbin Burnes head for the showers.

Then they pounced on the Milwaukee bullpen.

Jorge Soler hit a slump-busting homer to tie the game, Nicky Lopez bunted home the go-ahead run, and the Kansas City Royals used a late rally to squeak past the Brewers 6-4 on Wednesday night to wrap up a two-game sweep — their first series win over Milwaukee since June 2015.

Scott Barlow (2-1) got the final two outs of the seventh inning, Greg Holland worked the eighth and Josh Staumont coughed up a run in the ninth before striking out Omar Narvaez looking with two runners aboard for his fifth save.

“You're going to have these days when you're facing pitchers like we faced yesterday and Burnes today. Those guys have good stuff,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “They're not going to give up much.”

The Royals managed just two hits off Burnes when his pitch count caused him to leave leading 3-2 after six innings. Soler was the first batter of the seventh and promptly hammered J.P. Feyereisen's second pitch to end his 0-for-12 skid.

Feyereisen (0-2) then gave up Kelvin Gutierrez's single and walked Michael Taylor. A sacrifice bunt advanced both runners, and Lopez turned an attempted squeeze play into a bunt single that allowed pinch runner Jarrod Dyson to score easily.

“It’s just unfortunate,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “With a one-run lead, that’s not much margin for error.”

The Royals added two more runs off Brad Boxberger in the eighth before their own bullpen finished things off.

“We just keep picking up each other,” Royals starter Brad Keller said. “We’re clicking as a team again.”

Taylor hit a two-run homer in the second and robbed Jackie Bradley Jr. of a home run with a spectacular leaping catch in the sixth. The Brewers still scored on the sacrifice fly, but Taylor's catch saved a run and kept Kansas City within 3-2.

Bradley homered off Keller earlier in the game to end his own 0-for-22 slump.

Milwaukee is just 4-12 after a 17-10 start to the season.

“That’s baseball," Burnes said. “We got off to a hot start early; we've scuffled a little bit. They made a couple of good swings tonight and it got away from us. We're in a good spot as a team. All it's going to take is one game for everything to line up.”

Steady drizzle predicted all afternoon began in the third, then the rain picked up in the top of the fourth, and for a while it looked as if it would be a race to play enough innings to call the game official.

The showers briefly subsided, though, and Burnes and Keller kept dueling. Burnes baffled the Royals with his darting 85 mph curveball and searing 95 mph cutter while Keller kept getting the Brewers to chop into groundouts.

Keller was lifted with a runner on third and one out in the sixth. Bradley promptly tagged Jake Brentz with a deep fly ball that, despite Taylor's catch at the top of the wall, allowed Avisail Garcia to tag up with the go-ahead run.

Burnes was pulled after six innings, and Soler's homer and Lopez's go-ahead bunt rendered moot his latest dazzling start. He allowed just two hits over six innings, and while Burnes walked his second batter of the season, he also struck out nine to join the Indians' Shane Bieber with at least that many Ks in each of his first seven starts.

Pedro Martinez has the major league record with at least nine strikeouts in his first nine starts for Boston in 1999.

Brewers: OF Christian Yelich (back) played his second game at DH after returning from a long IL stay. He was 0 for 2 with three walks. “He's fine," Counsell said. “Haven't had any trainer conversations or anything.”

The Brewers gave struggling SS Luis Urias a break from the lineup after making four errors in the past two games. One on a throw to first base in the eighth inning Tuesday night allowed Kansas City to add an insurance run in its 2-0 win.

“He’s in a little bit of a mental slump, not a physical slump," said Counsell, who used Pablo Reyes at shortstop Wednesday night. "Those are a little bit trickier to fix or understand how to help him, but we’re doing our best.”

Both teams get Thursday off before RHP Adrian Houser (3-4, 3.63 ERA) takes the mound for Milwaukee to open a three-game series Friday night in Cincinnati. The Royals remain at home, where they have not announced a starter for their series opener the same night against Detroit.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Whit Merrifield slid under the tag to give the Royals the lead with two outs in the eighth inning, Brewers manager Craig Counsell immediately challenged the bang-bang call and his counterpart Mike Matheny probably groaned.

You see, it was just two days ago in Chicago that a controversial call at the plate was upheld — Kansas City has requested an explanation from the league on it — that resulted in a White Sox run and ultimately doomed the Royals to a loss.

So, was Matheny nervous during another review Tuesday night?

"Nope," he said, tongue planted firmly in cheek. "I have the utmost trust and respect in the replay process."

This time, the process worked in Matheny's favor. The safe call stood, the Royals tacked on another run when Luis Urias committed an error on a groundball by Salvador Perez, and Kansas City went on to a 2-0 victory.

"When they did the replay, it looked close," said Andew Benintendi, whose single sent Merrifield charging home from second base. "I think in that situation the initial call was huge."

The Royals' Kris Bubic, who had been working in relief but got the start when Danny Duffy headed to the injured list, threw six innings of one-hit ball.

The bullpen did the rest with Jake Brentz (1-0) getting the last out of the eighth inning to earn his first career win and Josh Staumont handling the ninth for his fourth save.

Meanwhile, Brandon Woodruff (2-2) had little to show for a mostly masterful night.

The Brewers starter allowed just two hits before walking Merrifield and plunking Carlos Santana with two outs in the eighth. Counsell called on Devin Williams to face Benintendi, whose single gave Merrifield just enough time to score.

"I mean, we're going to sing this song for as long as replay is around," Counsell said. "There's no reason to answer these questions about replay. What are we supposed to say about it? I mean, look, he called him safe."

As if that didn't spoil the night for Milwaukee, Avisail Garcia was tossed in the ninth for arguing balls and strikes by plate umpire Brian Gorman with a 2-2 count and two outs. Counsell also was thrown out for defending his hitter, leaving Daniel Vogelbach to swing wildly at Staumont's pitch for the game-ending third strike.

"I just don't think a player can be ejected simply for throwing his hand in the air in the ninth inning with two outs," Counsell said. "The umpire has to know there's emotion going on at that point. That was my point. ... He took an emotional point in the game and put it in his hands and that was disappointing."

Most of the game amounted to a pitch-for-pitch duel between two young starting pitchers.

Woodruff's only hiccups before the fateful eighth inning came in the second, when he gave up a couple two-out singles, and the fifth, when the Royals gave up a couple outs on the basepaths. Woodruff otherwise cruised right along, keeping impatient Kansas City hitters baffled by his fastball and sinker.

Bubic, who made 10 starts last season, struck out four and walked two.

Both starters were helped by a stiff breeze out of right field and thick, soupy air that kept a couple of potential homers in the park. The spring weather also produced a popup shower in the second inning that led to a 21-minute delay.

HAYS - Make it a baker's dozen for the Hays High girls' soccer team. The Indians overcame an hour delay at the start then played through the rain most of the night but ran their winning streak to 13 with a 10-0 win over Topeka West in their 5A Regional #3 opener Tuesday at the Fort Hays State Soccer Stadium.

The Indians led 6-0 at halftime and improved their record to 14-2.

HHS will host Maize South in the regional finals Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at FHSU. Maize South defeated Valley Center 1-0 in three overtimes Monday.

GODDARD - Hays High waited out a two-hour weather delay for their
chance to open regional play at Goddard-Eisenhower High School Tuesday
afternoon. Hays and Newton were both on the field and twenty minutes before
first pitch when lightning threatened the area. When heavy rain subsided, and
lightning cleared the area the teams returned to the field to warm up again.
The turf field allowed the tournament to continue on the scheduled day.

Newton scored in just two innings. The Railers though
tallied 21 runs in those two innings and ended the Indians season 21-0 after
five innings.

Hays tallied four errors in a nine run third inning and five
more errors in a twelve run fifth inning. Newton had seven hits in each of
those innings and totaled nineteen in the game total.

Hays threatened to score in the bottom of third with the
bases loaded but could not push a run across.

The Indians end their season at 12-9. Newton moves to the
championship game of the Regional Tournament and improves to 11-10.

🥎 Hays softball season ends at regionals

INDIANAPOLIS - The Fort Hays State track and field teams qualified 14 individuals to compete in 11 events at the 2021 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, announced Tuesday (May 18) by the NCAA. The list of Tigers heading to Allendale, Mich. later this month (May 27-29) includes six women competing in eight events and eight men competing in three events. After winning the national title in the 60m dash indoors, sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5966">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;will return to the national meet for a second time in a pair of events. The sprinter holds the fastest time in the country in the 100m dash with her school-record time of 11.46 while entering the meet fourth on the declared list in the 200m dash with a time of 23.71, another school record. The Junction City, Kan. native will run in the 100m prelims on Thursday at 5:15 p.m. CT before competing in the 200m prelims Friday afternoon at 4:20 p.m. CT. Finals of both races are set for Saturday evening. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5994">Alexandra Hart</a>&nbsp;will look to defend her indoor national championship in the high jump when she competes in her second national meet next week. Hart is undefeated in the high jump this season, finishing first in all 10 competitions she has entered. She also sits in 12th on the declared list in the 400m hurdles after posting a school-record 1:00.70 over the weekend at the Loper Twilight #2, improving her mark on the final day of the regular season just enough to get into the national meet. Rossi will open competition in the heptathlon Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m. CT before running in the prelims of the 400m hurdles Thursday evening at 5:55 p.m. CT.  </figure>INDIANAPOLIS - The Fort Hays State track and field teams qualified 14 individuals to compete in 11 events at the 2021 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, announced Tuesday (May 18) by the NCAA. The list of Tigers heading to Allendale, Mich. later this month (May 27-29) includes six women competing in eight events and eight men competing in three events. After winning the national title in the 60m dash indoors, sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5966">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;will return to the national meet for a second time in a pair of events. The sprinter holds the fastest time in the country in the 100m dash with her school-record time of 11.46 while entering the meet fourth on the declared list in the 200m dash with a time of 23.71, another school record. The Junction City, Kan. native will run in the 100m prelims on Thursday at 5:15 p.m. CT before competing in the 200m prelims Friday afternoon at 4:20 p.m. CT. Finals of both races are set for Saturday evening. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5994">Alexandra Hart</a>&nbsp;will look to defend her indoor national championship in the high jump when she competes in her second national meet next week. She enters the meet tied for second on the declared list after setting the program's outdoor record with a clearance of 5-9.75 when she won her second MIAA title earlier this month. Hart is undefeated in the high jump this season, finishing first in all 10 competitions she has entered. The Rolla, Kan. native cleared a personal-best 6-0 en route to her indoor national championship victory. Competition in the high jump is slated to begin at 4:15 p.m. CT Saturday. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5975">Mattie Rossi</a>&nbsp;was selected to compete in both the heptathlon and in the 400m hurdles. The sophomore broke the school record in both events this season, compiling a season-best 4,984 points in the heptathlon early this season to sit in 12th on the national declared list. She also sits in 12th on the declared list in the 400m hurdles after posting a school-record 1:00.70 over the weekend at the Loper Twilight #2, improving her mark on the final day of the regular season just enough to get into the national meet. Rossi will open competition in the heptathlon Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m. CT before running in the prelims of the 400m hurdles Thursday evening at 5:55 p.m. CT. The final three events of the heptathlon are slated to start around 8:30 a.m. CT Friday, with the 400m hurdles finals set for 6:05 p.m. CT Saturday. Brown opened the season with a personal-best throw of 154-3 in Emporia, while Berens tossed a personal-best 151-10 midway through the season at Pittsburg State before earning All-MIAA honors with a third-place finish at the conference championships. 🏃‍♀️ FHSU qualifies 14 for outdoor national championships

The TMP/LaCrosse Monarchs rallied from down seven in the seventh inning and&nbsp;&nbsp;scored the walk-off win in the 11thinning in an 8-7 win Monday over Russell/Victoria in the opening round of the 3A regional state tournament in Hays.

Russell/Victoria scored at least one run in each of the first five innings and starter Jackson Cross held the Monarchs offense in check into the seventh inning but in the inning the TMP offense woke up.

TMP opened the inning with four straight reaching the plate on a hit by pitch and three walks, the last with the bases loaded put TMP on the board at 7-1.

Chet Irvin singled in a run with the bases loaded to make it 7-2. A second hit by pitch, this time with the bases loaded made it 7-3.&nbsp;

After a strikeout TMP was down to their final out but a Nick Helget RBI single made it 7-4 and Nicholas Herrman followed with a bases clearing double to tie the game at 7 in the bottom of the inning.

In extra innings both teams threatened to scored in the eight but came up short. TMP left the bases loaded and then in the bottom of the ninth they had the winning run thrown out at the plate.

Neither team was able to really threatened to score again until the bottom of the 11th&nbsp;when TMP loaded the bases with one out in the inning. Griffin Schumacher drover a bases loaded walk giving TMP the 8-7 walk-off win.

TMP walked 12 times in the game while their pitchers only allied three walks.

Mark Rack got the win in relief for TMP. He turned in three shutout innings allowing just one hit while striking out six.

TMP improves to 11-10 and will take on the top-seed in the regional, Larned Wednesday at TMP Field.

⚾ TMP outlasts Russell/Victoria in 11 innings

LARNED – Beloit scored in five of six innings and held TMP/LaCrosse to just one run Monday on their way to the 7-1 win in the opening round of the Larned 3A Regional tournament.

&nbsp;The Monarchs threatened to put up a big inning right of the gate, but were unable to take advantage of a bases loaded top half of the first inning.

Beloit wasted little time getting their offense going in the bottom of the inning. The Trojans scored a pair of runs after loading the bases to go up 2-0.

The Trojans added one more in the second inning and took a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning.

In the top half of the fourth TMP got the lead off hitter on and Alexa Reyersee drove in the Monarchs’ first run on a sacrifice fly making it 3-1.

Beloit got the run back and added some insurance. They scored two in the fourth and added since runs in the fifth and sixth on their way to the 7-1 win.

TMP’s Madison Augustine allowed seven runs, six earned on 11 hits in six innings and took the loss.&nbsp;

Kyleigh Allen and Jessica Herrman each collected a pair of hits in the loss.

HAYS - The Thomas More Prep-Marian/Ellis girls' soccer team advanced to the 4-3-2-1A West Regional #3 finals after a 6-0 win over Winfield Monday at the FHSU Soccer Stadium.

ticket to next week’s 3A State Tournament by winning their own regional Monday at
the Smoky Hill Country Club. The Monarchs shot a 395 and outdistanced second
place Hoisington by 11 strokes. Phillipsburg finished third one back of the
Cardinals.

Sophomore Landon Rozean shot a 12-over-par 83 and finished
second, three shots back of Phillipsburg’s Ty Sides who fired a 9-over 80 to
win the individual title. The Monarchs Jackson Schulte finished third with a 92.

The 3A State Tournament will be held at the Hesston Golf
Course on Monday and Tuesday (May 24-25).

⛳ Monarchs win own regional, advance to state

SALINA – The Hays High boys golf team finished third at
Monday’s Salina South Regional at the Salina Municipal Golf Course and qualify
for next week’s 5A State Tournament. The Indians shot a 323, 11 behind second
place Great Bend and 39 back of regional champ Maize South.

It's the 12th straight year the Indians have qualified for state as a team.

Sophomore Braden Hoskins led the Indians with a 4-over-par
74 and tied for fourth. Senior Jason Krannawitter shot a 5-over-par 75 and
finished in eight place.

Grant Waggoner of Maize South was the individual champ with
a 2-under-par 68.

The 5A State Tournament will be held at Newton’s Sand Creek
Station Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday (May 24-25).

JOHNSON CITY – Brady Frickey won the individual title and the
Ellis boys won the team title at Monday’s Stanton County 2A golf regional at the
Johnson-Prairie Pines Golf Course. Frickey had one double-bogey, four bogeys
and three birdies and shot a 3-over-par 73. He edged Elkhart’s Lance Addington
by four strokes.

The Railers, who won last week’s Mid-Continent League Tournament,
shot a 347 and edged second place Hoxie by four strokes to secure a spot in
next week’s 2A State Tournament. Oakley finished third with a 356.

The 2A State Tournament will be held at the Salina Municipal
Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday (May 24-25).

72 to tie for first place and help the Plainville boys golf team to a third
place finish at Monday’s Republic County 2A Regional at the Belleville Country

KEARNEY, Neb. - The Fort Hays State track and field teams saw one school record go down on the final day of the regular season Sunday afternoon at the Loper Twilight #2 hosted by Nebraska-Kearney. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5975">Mattie Rossi</a>&nbsp;broke her own school record in the 400m hurdles, winning the race with a provisional time of 1:00.70. The mark places Rossi in 13th place on the national performance chart and in a prime position for selection to the National Championships. The sophomore also ran in the 100m hurdles, finishing third with a time of 14.49. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5977">Taylor Savolt</a>&nbsp;ran alongside Rossi in both hurdle races, placing second in the 400m hurdles with a personal-best time of 1:04.08 while finishing fifth in the 100m hurdles after crossing the line in 15.23. KEARNEY, Neb. - The Fort Hays State track and field teams saw one school record go down on the final day of the regular season Sunday afternoon at the Loper Twilight #2 hosted by Nebraska-Kearney. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5975">Mattie Rossi</a>&nbsp;broke her own school record in the 400m hurdles, winning the race with a provisional time of 1:00.70. The mark places Rossi in 13th place on the national performance chart and in a prime position for selection to the National Championships. The sophomore also ran in the 100m hurdles, finishing third with a time of 14.49. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5977">Taylor Savolt</a>&nbsp;ran alongside Rossi in both hurdle races, placing second in the 400m hurdles with a personal-best time of 1:04.08 while finishing fifth in the 100m hurdles after crossing the line in 15.23. The men's team had runners in two races, including the 100m dash and the 800m run.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5918">Aaron Mangan</a>&nbsp;placed second in the 800m run with a time of 1:53.81, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5919">Trever Medina</a>&nbsp;placed fifth with a time 1:54.24 and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5917">Ethan Lang</a>&nbsp;finishing 10th with a mark of 1:58.69.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5939">Cole Diffenbaugh</a>&nbsp;finished in seventh place in the 100m dash with a time of 11.03 with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5916">Philip Landrum</a>&nbsp;close behind in ninth with a time of 11.13. The Tigers will now await the official selection announcements for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, slated to be released Tuesday evening (May 18) on NCAA.com. 🏃‍♀️ Rossi bests 400m hurdles record at Loper Twilight #2

CHICAGO — Wade Davis bounced a wild pitch that allowed José Abreu to dash home with the game-ending run, and the Chicago White Sox rallied in the ninth inning to beat the Kansas City 4-3 on Sunday on a call that left the Royals fuming.

Kansas City led 3-2 when Tim Anderson doubled off Davis (0-2) leading off the ninth.

Adam Eaton sacrificed and, with the infield in, Yoán Moncada lined a run-scoring single to center. Abreu was hit just above the left elbow by an 82 mph knuckle-curve.

Yermín Mercedes singled sharply to right and Whit Merrifield, a second baseman making his second appearance in right field this season, made a throw on the fly to catcher Cam Gallagher. Moncada, sliding headfirst, was tagged out near the left shoulder.

Abreu, injured Friday in a collision with Hunter Dozier, dashed home when Davis bounced a knuckle-curve off Gallagher, and Davis' 21st pitch of the inning ricocheted about 15 feet up the first-base the line.

Gallagher retrieved the ball and made a leaping tag attempt. Abreu missed the plate with his left leg but got his left arm on the the plate just ahead of Gallagher's mitt.

Second-year big league umpire Edwin Moscoso signaled safe, and the call was upheld after a video review.

“We were talking about all his attributes,” Chicago manager Tony La Russa said of Abreu. “Now you have to add outstanding instinctive baserunning. It’s a great play.”

Royals manager Mike Matheny, though, strongly disagreed with the game-ending call.

“If we’re going to use video replay, there needs to be some accountability,” he said. "I just walked in here and had two different camera angles with this guy out — tagged before he ever even touched the plate. Very obvious. I don’t know what they’re doing, backing each other up. Whatever it is, it’s wrong.”

Matt Foster (2-1) struck out two in a perfect ninth. completing a six-hitter that gave Chicago a four-game split. The Royals had lost their previous four series, going 1-12 in that span.

Adam Eaton homered for AL Central-leading Chicago, which has not lost consecutive games since April 15-17.

Salvador Pérez, who left Saturday’s game in the eighth with left groin tightness, went 1 for 2 with a walk as the Royals' designated hitter.

Pérez hit a sacrifice fly in the first off Dylan Cease, who allowed an unearned run and three hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Chicago went ahead in the fifth when Eaton hit a two-run homer off Brady Singer, who gave up two runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Kansas City took a 3-2 lead in the seventh when Aaron Bummer relieved Codi Heuer with two on, Merrifield hit a tying single and Carlos Santana followed with a sacrifice fly, a drive Eaton leaped to grab at the fence in right.

“Any way we can get a win is a win,” Eaton said. “Winning at all costs, whatever it takes.”
