The Hays High Indians played their first game as the number one ranked team in 5A as they opened the Colby Orange and Black Classic with Ulysses on Thursday afternoon.&nbsp;

Hays High scored the first seven points of the game and then went on a 16-1 run following a Ulysses three pointer. The Indians led 23-7 after the first quarter. They bettered the first frame by a point when they outscored the Tigers 24-7 in the second quarter for a 47-14 halftime lead.

Hays was never threatened in the second half as they outscore Ulysses 29-21 which included a continuous clock fourth quarter.&nbsp;

With the win Hays moves to the semifinals of the 36th Annual Orange and Black Classic. The Indians are 14-4 all-time in the first round of the tournament.

Hays improves to 9-0 on the year. Ulysses falls to 3-6.

Dalyn Schwarz scored 19, one shy of a career high. Jace Linenberger added 15 and Wesley Oakley scored a career high 12 on four of four shooting behind the three point arc. Ulysses was led by Lance Walker's 23 points.

The Hays boys will take on Garden City for a second week in a row as the Buffaloes beat Goodland to advance to the championship semifinals.

The Hays High girls fell to #8-3A Goodland 54-41. The Lady Indians are 2-7 on the year while Goodland improves to 8-1. The Hays girls will play Osborne in the consolation semifinals at 3:00 in the Colby High School gymnasium.&nbsp;

#1 Hays opens Colby tourney with a 41 point win

JOPLIN, Mo. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team outscored Missouri Southern 24-9 in the third quarter to take control and beat teh Lions 70-49 for their third straight win Thursday at the Leggett &amp; Platt Athletic Center.

The Tigers (8-2, 8-2 MIAA) closed the second quarter on a 9-1 run to take a 32-26 lead into the locker room. It was part of a 21-5 run that saw their lead grow to 13 midway through the third and would lead by as many as 27 in the fourth quarter.

It's the sixth time this season the Tigers have won by 20 or more points, the most in the MIAA. No other school has more than four 20-plus point wins. The lead changed hands five times in the first half alongside four ties. Fort Hays State struggled to find the bottom of the net early on, missing its first five shots. But after scoring the first points of the game, Missouri Southern managed just those two points over the first six minutes. The Tigers finally hit a field goal at the 6:08 mark on a layup from Cydney Bergmann,&nbsp;sparking a 7-0 run. Missouri Southern (4-7, 4-7 MIAA) momentarily regained the lead late in the quarter before Jaden Hobbs&nbsp;scored five points in the final 21 seconds to give FHSU a 19-15 lead. The Lions opened the second quarter with a 9-2 run to go back in front by three, 24-21. Missouri Southern held the Tigers without a field goal for over seven minutes in the second quarter, but the Lions were unable to stretch the lead past three. FHSU forced five turnovers over the stretch while hitting 6-of-6 from the line to keep things within reach.

Hobbs, Whitney Randall and Jessie Sallach&nbsp;all buried a pair of free throws to help the Tigers tie things up at 25 before a 3-pointer from Madison Mittie&nbsp;swung the momentum of the game. The senior's bucket at the 2:30 mark, FHSU's first basket of the second quarter, pushed the Tigers in front for good. Fort Hays State held MSSU (4-7, 4-7 MIAA) to just 2-of-10 shooting and forced four turnovers while hitting six field goals and 10-of-12 from the charity stripe in the decisive third quarter. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol, but practiced in a limited capacity on Wednesday, raising hopes the reigning Super Bowl MVP can play in Sunday’s AFC title game against Buffalo.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association Board of
Directors voted Wednesday to allow up to four fans per participant at
activities starting Jan. 29. 

The measure approved by the board, 46-27, also allows local
school districts to have stricter limitations.

In December, the board voted to allow only two family members
to attend winter sports events and other activities until Jan. 28.


KSHSAA Executive Director Bill Faflick told the member
schools that local control is “absolutely appropriate.”

“If you’re not ready for four (spectators) in your facility,
then that is your call,” Faflick said. “We believe this is a good action our
executive board put forth and now it comes down to our schools to implement.”

He added masking and social distancing is still required by
all those in attendance and participants that are not actively taking part in
the game or sport.

Thomas More Prep-Marian Athletic Director Troy Schulte told Hays Post on Wednesday that the administration has not made a final decision on the most recent action and that they will consider the changes.

Hays High Athletic Director Lance Krannawitter said they are in the process of discussing the issue. He said they are taking into consideration several factors, including the total number of participants that can attend and still adhere to social distancing practices.

The Ellis school district will adopt the changes approved by
the state. Athletic Director Derek Schoenthaler said the district’s policy is to follow KSHSAA’s
ruling.

Citing limited space, the Victoria policy will still only
allow two spectators per participant. Athletic Director Dan Rogers said they do
not limit it to parents but still only two fans are allowed.

KHSAA approves change to number of fans allowed at activities

HAYS – The Smith Center Lady Red used an 11-3 run to end the second
quarter and another in the third quarter and then held off a late TMP challenge
as the knock off the Lady Monarchs 47-44 in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Continent
League tournament Tuesday at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

The Monarchs (7-2) got off to a slow start and fell behind 6-0
before Sophia Balthazor knocked in a pair of threes tying the game at six. 

Balthazor then tied the game at 8 when she made two free
throws after she was fouled on a three-point attempt.

TMP’s Kassidi Yost converted a pair of free throws to give
TMP a 10-8 lead through one quarter.

Emilee Lane scored a bucket to open the second quarter giving
TMP their largest lead of the night at 12-8. Her second straight field goal put
TMP up 14-10 to open the second but the lead was short lived.

Smith Center outscored TMP 11-3 to end the quarter and take
a 21-17 lead into the halftime break.

The Monarchs briefly tied the game at 21 with back-to-back
Lane field goals to open then third quarter but Smith Center strung together a
second 11-3 run to build their largest lead of the game at eight at 32-24.

TMP trailed 34-28 through three quarters.

Into the fourth quarter TMP, on several occasions, was able
to close the lead to as few as two points and even got within one in the final
minute but could never retake the lead. 

Smith Center gave them plenty of chances, the Lady Red missed
three straight front-end of one-and-one free throws but each time got the
rebound and down one the Monarchs missed a layup that would have given them the
lead.

Emilee Lane recorded a season-high 20 points in the loss for
TMP. Sophia Balthazor added 12 points.

TMP will take on Trego in the consolation semifinals on Thursday
in Plainville. The Golden Eagles lost to the two-seed Hoxie Tuesday 36-32.

The top-seed Phillipsburg was the only higher seed to
advance to the championship semifinals. The beat Oakley 63-20.

They will take on Norton after they beat Ellis 56-50.

After starting the season unranked, the Hays High boys have
taken over the top spot in this week’s 5A Kansas Basketball Coaches Rankings.

The Indians were ranked third in the final rankings before
the holiday break and enter this week at 8-0. 

The TMP-Marian girls have won six in-a-row and enter the 3A
girls rankings at No. 9. They are 7-1 entering Tuesday’s Mid-continent League tournament
game against Smith Center.

The Phillipsburg girls are ranked fourth again this week.

The Trego girls suffered their only loss to the Panthers
last week and drop one spot to No. 5 in the 2A girls rankings.

The Ellis boys dropped three spots after losing to TMP last

WACO, Texas (AP) — Jared Butler hit a 3-pointer on the first shot of the game and No. 2 Baylor jumped out to a big lead. The standout guard kept scoring points — and making plays when No. 9 Kansas tried to get close late.

Butler had a season-high 30 points and eight assists as the Bears remained undefeated with a 77-69 victory Monday night over No. 9 Kansas, which has lost consecutive Big 12 games for the first time in nearly eight years.

“It’s a team that wins the game. Me trying to do it all by myself, it’s never worked out that way,” Butler said, deferring some of the credit. “To win the Big 12, we’re going to need all 15 guys, we need everybody, we need the staff. I just make sure we play a team game, and I think we’re unbeatable when we play that way.”

Butler and these Bears (13-0, 6-0 Big 12) led throughout in a matchup of this season’s preseason league favorite and the team that has won or shared 15 of the last 16 regular-season titles. The first of Butler’s seven 3-pointers was part of their opening 11-2 spurt, and they led by as many as 16 in the first half.

“They were real focused, like we’ve been for every game,” Baylor coach Scott Drew said.

Kansas (10-4, 4-3) played for the first time since a 75-70 loss last Tuesday at Oklahoma State before the Jayhawks’ scheduled game Saturday was postponed because of COVID-19 issues in Iowa State’s program.

The Jayhawks were within 65-60 with 3:18 left after Jalen Wilson drove the baseline for a slam that capped an 8-0 run. Butler then hit a 3 at the other end, and Kansas never got closer.

When Kansas had closed to 56-51 midway though the second half after a turnover by Butler led to a dunk by Ochai Agbaji, Butler responded with a pass to Mark Vital for a dunk. Butler then followed a turnover by Agbaji with a 3-pointer.

Coach Bill Self’s team hadn’t lost consecutive Big 12 games since a three-game skid in February 2013 against Oklahoma State, TCU and Oklahoma.

“I’m not leaving out of here mad. I’m leaving out here disappointed, without question,” Self said. “Certainly they were better than us tonight.”

MaCio Teague added 13 points and Davion Mitchell 10 for the Bears. Vital had 10 rebounds, along with an impressive block on what would have been a breakaway dunk for Kansas.

Christian Braun had 14 of his 17 points for Kansas in the first half, while Agbaji had 13 of his 16 points after halftime. Marcus Garrett had nine points and eight assists, but also had five turnovers.

Butler had nine points in the game’s first five minutes. That came two days after he was scoreless until scoring seven points in the final seven minutes of a 68-60 win at Texas Tech that was Baylor’s first game this season decided by fewer than 10 points.

Baylor was up 37-21 following another 3 by Butler that prompted Self to call his third timeout. That came only seconds before what would have been the under-four media stoppage, but he didn’t wait after the 3 that was set up when Matthew Mayer stole a bad pass by Garrett.

Kansas also played No. 1 Gonzaga this season, losing to the Bulldogs 102-90 in the season opener.

“Well, I would be shocked if there’s a third (team) that fits into that category,” Self said. “The games were actually pretty similar. ... We came back and tied Gonzaga, didn’t quite get close enough to do that today. I think they’re both terrific.”

Kansas: The Jayhawks are 98-14 following a loss under Self. Their last eight losses overall have been to Top 25 teams. ... If not for Braun’s effort in the first half, when he made all four of his 3-pointers, the Jayhawks could have been in a much bigger hole. There was a stretch of just over four minutes when he outscored Baylor 11-10 on his own.

“We would have been buried if it wasn’t for CB making two or three 3s, but after that we settled in and did some good things,” Self said.

Baylor: The Bears are 13-0 for the fourth time in school history — the other times were in 1911-12, 2011-12 and 2016-17. They are 6-0 in Big 12 for the second season in a row. Baylor is 9-1 against ranked teams the past two seasons.

Kansas is at Oklahoma on Saturday, only two weeks after holding on at home for a 63-59 win over the Sooners.

🏀 Butler scores 30, unbeaten No. 2 Baylor tops No. 9 Kansas

NORTON – The TMP-Marian Monarchs used a 10-3 fourth quarter run as they
rallied to beat the Norton Bluejays in the four vs five matchup in the first
round the of Mid-Continent League tournament Monday 44-41.

After a pair of ties in the opening minutes of the game
Norton strung together a 5-0 run that was capped off by a Drake Harding
three-pointer to put Norton up 9-4.

Back-to-back field goals by Hayden Brown and Dylan Werth at
the end of the first quarter cut Norton’s lead to 9-8 after one.

TMP briefly took a 12-10 lead to open the second quarter
with a Jace Wentling jumper but Norton answered with a 10-2 run to take their
largest lead of the game at six at 20-14.

But just like the first quarter TMP scored four straight to
end the first half with Kade Harris’ steal and layup cutting Norton’s lead to
20-18 at the break.

In the third quarter Norton built the lead back to five
before TMP outscored the Bluejays by four, at 11-4, to end the quarter and pull
back within one as Werth put in a layup to beat the buzzer making it 34-33
Norton.

Norton added a free throw and led 35-33 to open the final
frame but the Monarchs’ Schulte and Werth combined to for that 10-2 run to put
TMP up 43-38 and they would hold on for the 44-41 win.

Schulte led all scorers with 23 points and Werth added 10. 

With the win the Monarchs advance to the MCL tournament semifinals
for the seventh straight year. They have made at least the semifinals every
year they have been a member of the MCL.

TMP will play the top-seed Hoxie in Friday’s semifinals in Ellis
after the Indians held off Hill City 53-51.

The other semifinal games saw Trego defeat Phillipsburg
57-48 and Ellis cruise past Oakley 50-29.

In the feather bracket consolation games Russell beat Smith
Center 67-45 and Stockton beat Plainville 53-45

🏀TMP advances to MCL semis with win over Norton

&nbsp; WICHITA, Kan. - The 12th-ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team picked up its first win of the season in convincing fashion Sunday (Jan. 17) during the Jet Duals, besting Emmanuel College 41-6. Fort Hays State won nine of the 10 matchups, including six bonus-point wins. The Tigers are now 1-3 on the year, while the Lions dip to 0-8 this season. Wrestling in a dual for the first time in his collegiate career,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6070">Rhett Koppes</a>&nbsp;got the Tigers going with a 6-2 decision at 125 pounds. Second-ranked&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5806">Mason Turner</a>&nbsp;followed with a first-period pin, his second pin of the season. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6066">Rhett Edmonson</a>&nbsp;picked up his first collegiate win&nbsp;at 141 pounds with a 7-2 decision. The freshman fell behind 2-0 after the first period, but rallied with seven points in the final period after a takedown and a four-point nearfall. &nbsp; WICHITA, Kan. - The 12th-ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team picked up its first win of the season in convincing fashion Sunday (Jan. 17) during the Jet Duals, besting Emmanuel College 41-6. Fort Hays State won nine of the 10 matchups, including six bonus-point wins. The Tigers are now 1-3 on the year, while the Lions dip to 0-8 this season. Wrestling in a dual for the first time in his collegiate career,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6070">Rhett Koppes</a>&nbsp;got the Tigers going with a 6-2 decision at 125 pounds. Second-ranked&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5806">Mason Turner</a>&nbsp;followed with a first-period pin, his second pin of the season. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6066">Rhett Edmonson</a>&nbsp;picked up his first collegiate win&nbsp;at 141 pounds with a 7-2 decision. The freshman fell behind 2-0 after the first period, but rallied with seven points in the final period after a takedown and a four-point nearfall. The Lions cut the lead in half at 149 pounds with a pin before the Tigers regained control for the rest of the contest.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5804">Anthony Scantlin</a>&nbsp;recorded another third-period comeback at 157 pounds, scoring all eight of his points in the final period of an 8-0 major decision. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6068">Cody Hicks</a>&nbsp;and sixth-ranked&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5807">Marty Verhaeghe</a>&nbsp;followed with back-to-back technical falls, all but securing the victory for the Tigers. Hicks racked up three takedowns and eight nearfall points in a 15-0 victory before Verhaeghe tallied three takedowns and 10 nearfall points in a 16-1 win. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5795">Clint Herrick</a>&nbsp;picked up his first win of the season at 184 pounds, fighting his way to an 11-4 decision thanks in large part to a four-point nearfall in the second period. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5794">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;made quick work of his opponent at 197 pounds, recording a takedown just four seconds into the match. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs forced the Cleveland Browns to punt in the waning minutes Sunday with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes out with a concussion. 

Then 35-year-old backup Chad Henne showed some moxie with a long third-down scramble and a fourth-down completion to Tyreek Hill with just over a minute left to give the Chiefs a first down and allowing them to run out the clock on a 22-17 victory in the divisional round of the playoffs.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A depleted roster forced Texas deep into its bench for seldom-used Kamaka Hepa, whose biggest moments this season have been as the Longhorns’ biggest cheerleader on the sideline.

Given his chance, Hepa delivered the big shots on the court Saturday night, scoring 15 points as the No. 4 Longhorns rebounded from their first Big 12 loss of the season by beating Kansas State 82-67.

Hepa, who had played in only three games, started in place of freshman forward Greg Brown, who was one of three Longhorns (11-2, 5-1) held out for reasons not immediately disclosed. Hepa made five of Texas’ 12 3-pointers in the blowout.

“I ultimately want our team to succeed and when our team succeeds, I succeed,” Hepa said. “There’s no reason to pout about not playing ... not making shots. Whatever the case may be, it’s that underlying love I have for my coaches, and that I have for my teammates.”

With the emergence of Brown, one of the top freshmen in the country, Hepa initially planned to redshirt this season.

“Then the NCAA just said this would be a free year for everybody,” Hepa said.

The Longhorns broke the game open with an 18-0 run midway through the first half keyed by a burst of 3-pointers and a defensive press that rattled the Wildcats. Andrew Jones made three 3-pointers in the half and the Longhorns turned six early Kansas State turnovers into 14 points to quickly pull away.

Hepa made two early 3-pointers, then swished two more from the left wing in the opening minutes of the second half to snuff out any hopes of a Wildcats rally. Febres, who hadn’t played since knee surgery last March, finished with six points.

“That’s the way a team is supposed to be,” Texas coach Shaka Smart said. “We knew with those three guys out, we’d need contributions from guys who haven’t played much ... The more guys you have with a passion for each other, the more success you’re going to have.”

Kansas State had to postpone a game earlier in the week because it didn’t have six health scholarship players due to COVID and injury problems, and had only nine available Saturday night. Texas was missing Brown, who is averaging 11.8 points, and top reserves Kai Jones and Brock Cunningham, forcing the Longhorns to go deep into their bench for Hepa and shooting guard Jase Febres.

Smart said Brown, Kai Jones and Cunningham would not play in the next scheduled game against Iowa State on Wednesday. The status of that game is uncertain as Iowa State had its Saturday matchup with Kansas postponed because of COVID-19 problems within the Cyclones program.

Davion Bradford led Kansas State (5-9, 1-5) with 14 points.

“Losing isn’t a habit. Losing has never been a habit,” Bradford said. “We’re going to get there one day. We’ll keep fighting.”

Kansas State: The Wildcats were smothered early on offense and never recovered in dropping their fourth straight loss.. The turnovers forced by Texas’ press led to easy Longhorns baskets and the half-court offense was too often caught deep in the shot clock.

Texas: The Longhorns have found a dead-eye shooting touch from long range. In the last three games, Jones hit the game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds against West Virginia, the Longhorns made 13 3-pointers in a loss to Texas Tech and kept launching wide open shots against the Wildcats.

Texas led 61-36 when Jericho Sims led a fast break with an quick outlet pass to Courtney Ramey, who floated a soft lob off the backboard and right back to the trailing Sims for a flying, two-handed dunk. Sims and Ramey each scored 14 points.

🏀 Hepa scores 15 as No. 4 Texas romps over K-State

STOCKTON – It took the TMP-Marian Monarchs (7-2, 3-1 MCL) a
little bit to get going Saturday afternoon but once they found their rhythm they
never let up as they cruised to a 75-39 win over Smith Center (0-8, 0-4 MCL) in
a feather bracket game at Stockton High School.

Smith Center jumped out to a pair of four point leads in the
first quarter and held a 13-11 lead late in the quarter before the Monarchs
Jackson Schulte gave the Monarchs a 14-13 lead on a three-point play. TMP never
trailed the rest of the way.

The Schulte three-point play sparked a 6-0 TMP run to end
the first quarter as they built a 17-13 lead after one.

The Monarchs scored 12 straight to open the second quarter
and outscored the Redmen 26-6 in the quarter.

Gavin Unrein scored 10 of his game and career-high 17 in the
quarter.

The Monarchs outscored Smith Center 25-7 in the third
quarter and with the continuous clock in the fourth TMP claimed the 75-39 victory.

Unrein led three Monarchs in double-figures with 17. Schulte
added 16 and Dylan Werth finished with 11 points.

TMP will get Norton in the first-round of the MCL tournament
Monday at 6 p.m. in Norton.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs took to the floor at Al
Billinger Fieldhouse for the first time Friday night and they would not disappoint
as they earned a doubleheader sweep of the rival Ellis.

The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs (7-1, 4-0 MCL) used a 16-0 run
to end the first quarter and begin the second quarter and held Ellis (6-2, 2-2)
in check in the second half on their way to a 56-38 win.

The game opened with a pair of ties but with the game tied
at four TMP’s Emilee Lane scored back-to-back field goals kick starting an 11-2

run putting TMP up 26-18. But Ellis had an answer.The Railers strung together a 10-2 run over the own tying
the game at 28 before the Monarchs scored six straight.The final field goal came on a Kade Harris steal and layup
with one second left in the first half putting TMP up 36-28 at the break.Werth scored back-to-back field goals opening the second
half and Wentling added another bucket extending the lead to a game-high at
40-30 but Ellis wouldn’t go away.Down 42-32 the Railers finished the third quarter and opened
the fourth quarter on a 8-3 run to cut the TMP lead to 45-40.The game got tight down the stretch as Ellis’ Brady Frickey
knocked down four three pointers in the quarter, the last one cutting TMP’s lead
to just one at 57-56 but TMP’s Lucas Lang sealed the game at the free throw
