ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Manuel Margot hit a run-scoring single in the 10th inning and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 2-1. 

Kevin Kiermaier advanced from second to third when Taylor Walls flied out to deep center field against Tyler Zuber.

 After Austin Meadows was intentionally walked, Margot won it on just the Rays’ third hit of the game. 

Andrew Benintendi homered leading off the ninth against J.P. Feyereisen as the Royals tied it at 1.

 Feyereisen worked out of a jam with a runner on third and one out in the 10th. 

Tyler Glasnow pitched eight stellar innings for the Rays, scattering three hits. He struck out 11 and walked two.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays' 11-game winning streak came to an end Tuesday night when Brad Keller pitched seven strong innings and Salvador Perez hit a tiebreaking RBI single to give the Kansas City Royals a 2-1 victory.

Rich Hill struck out a career-high 13 for the Rays. Tampa Bay's winning string was the second-longest in club history, one shy of the record set in 2004 by the then-Devil Rays managed by Lou Piniella.

“We had a great run,”Hill said. “We'll start another one tomorrow."

Tampa Bay center fielder Kevin Kiermaier called the stretch “incredible.”

“I think we were all waiting for, not necessarily an 11-game win streak, but to kind of bust out of the shell and get guys swinging the bats and just feeding off our pitchers," Kiermaier said.

Keller (4-4) allowed one run, four hits, four walks and struck out seven. Jake Brentz went 1 1/3 innings before Kyle Zimmer got two outs to get his second save.

“Brad was as good as I've seen him,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “I thought he had very good rhythm. I thought his tempo, his execution on his fastball and slider were good, Probably the best changeups we've seen from him. If he can continue to development that pitch, it's going to help everything else.”

Perez put the Royals up 2-1 on a sixth-inning single off Hill (3-2).

Hill gave up two runs and six hits, and didn't issue a walk over eight innings. Over his last six starts, the lefty has allowed five earned runs over 35 2/3 innings, but has a 2-2 record.

Hill became the oldest player to appear in a game with the Rays at 41 years, 75 days. Hall of Famer Wade Boggs was 41 years, 73 days old when he played his final game on Aug. 27, 1999.

Hill retired his first 10 batters before Carlos Santana tied it 1 in the fourth with a home run. It was his 250th homer, which moved him within one of tying Tony Clark for 13th place all-time among switch-hitters.

The Royals have won seven of 10 following an 11-game losing streak.

Brett Phillips had a single leading off the Rays third that went off Keller’s glove, stole second, went to third on a grounder and scored on a hit by Yandy Díaz.

Kansas City shortstop Adalberto Mondesi, reinstated from the 10-day injured list after missing the first 45 games this season with a right oblique sprain, doubled twice in four at-bats. He was hurt in the Royals’ final spring training game on March 29.

“Just good to have him back,” Matheny said. “We know what kind of dangerous player he is as far as what he can do at the plate, what he can do on the bases and defensively, too. It's exciting to have him back.”

Hill joined Randy Johnson, Nolan Ryan and Gaylord Perry as the only pitchers to strikeout 13 or more at age 41 years, 75 days or older. Ryan did it 13 times.

Kiermaier made a nifty running catch on Andrew Benintendi’s drive to the left-center field warning track in the second. He made the grab behind left fielder Austin Meadows, who was also trying to track down the ball. Kiermaier also made a leaping catch at the wall on Benintendi's fly in the eighth.

“That's what I love doing ... I love to make plays for our pitchers," Kiermaier said. “It would have been a lot cooler if won tonight.”

The Rays reached the 85 percent vaccination level that allows MLB protocols to be relaxed.

The players and staff are no longer required to wear masks in the dugout.

“I’m excited about that,” manager Kevin Cash said. “We’ve got to keep adhering to protocols and the guidelines that are in place.”

Royals: Matheny said OF Hunter Dozier (concussion), who is at Triple-A Omaha, “seems to be getting his timing right.”

Rays: 1B Ji-Man Choi, who left Monday’s game against Toronto with right knee soreness, was the DH.

him out of the top-20. The senior closed with a 7-over 79 and tied for 23rd
with a 15-over 159. 
Sophomore Braden Hoskins matched his first round 86 with an 86 on Tuesday and
tied for 52nd with a 172. 
Nicklaus Mason of Shawnee-Mill Valley won the individual title. The senior shot
a 4-under 68 on the final round and finished at 5-under, one shot ahead of
Michael Winslow of St. Thomas Aquinas. 
Kapaun Mt. Carmel won the 5A team title with a 607. They finished two shots
ahead of St. Thomas Aquinas. Maize South finished third, six back of the first

with a 22-over-par, 164. 

Monarch sophomore Landon Rozean also closed with an 80 and tied for 25th
at 25-over. Phillipsburg’s Ty Sides closed with a 4-under 78 and tied for 10th 18-over-par. 
Lucas Scheufler of Wichita-Trinity Academy shot a 68 on Monday and 69 on Tueday
and won the 3A title at 5-under, five strokes better than Marysville’s Jackson
Rader. 
Sante Fe Trail won the 3A team title with a 639, 14 strokes better then Cheney.
Cimarron finished is sixth place.

Municipal Golf Course and 1-under and won the individual title. Krob, who
finished in 10th place as a sophomore in 2019, won by five strokes over Salina-Sacred
Heart senior Caleb Gilliland. 

Krob had five birdies and three bogeys in his
final round. All three of the bogeys were on par 3s. Four of the five birdies came on par 5s.

Brady Frickey of Ellis closed with a final round 73 and tied for seventh at
16-over. 

Hoxie finishes fourth, Planville fifth and Ellis sixth in the final team
standings. Salina-Sacred Heart was the runaway team champ with a 621,
outdistancing second place Sterling by 63 strokes. Olathe-Heritage Christian
Academy finished third.

just missed the cut with a 361 and finished seventh. The Monarchs finished

WICHITA, Kan.&nbsp;- The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission along with the Wichita Wind Surge announce the 87th&nbsp;NBC World Series, powered by Evergy will be played at Riverfront Stadium later this summer. The NBC World Series will be played August 4 -14, with Wichita hosting the last six days of the event, August 9-14. The first five days will be played in Hutchinson's Hobart-Detter Field, August 4-8.&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Carlos Santana belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Kansas City Royals a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.

Kansas City was held to three hits until the ninth, when Whit Merrifield led off with an infield single before Santana connected against Michael Fulmer (3-3).

“I was just trying to get Whit to second or third,” Santana said. "But I knew I made good contact.”

Kyle Zimmer (3-0) struck out three in two hitless innings for the win.

Royals manager Mike Matheny was ejected for the second time this season for arguing in the sixth.

Detroit scored twice in the first against Kris Bubic, sparked by Robbie Grossman's leadoff double. Jeimer Candelario and Ethan Haase each hit an RBI single, and the Tigers had the bases loaded with one out. Bubic prevented further damage and pitched scoreless ball after that.

“That first inning is probably the one inning you look back on in this game,” Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said. "We put up good at-bats early, had him wobbling and they had guys warming up in the bullpen. Then he got a couple of quick outs to end the first to get out of it.”

Bubic allowed six hits in five innings with three strikeouts and three walks. Royals relievers Tyler Zuber, Scott Barlow and Zimmer held the Tigers scoreless.

⚾ Railers No. 1 seed in 2-1A State Tournament

BELOIT – The TMP-Marian girls qualified five individuals in
six events and the boys four in five events for next week’s state track meet in
Wichita. The boys finished third and the girls fifth at Friday’s Beloit 3A
Regional.

The girls had two first place finishes. Makinsey Schlautmam
in the high jump and Abby Rueschhoff the triple jump and finished second in the
long jump. Kassidi Yost finished second in the high jump, Sasha Wasinger placed
second in the shot put and Emilee Lane fourth in the 800 meters to qualify 
 
The Monarch boys brought home three first place finishes. Jace Wentling took
the long jump and triple jump and Jeff Heimann won the pole vault. Kade Harris finished
second in the long, five inches behind Wentling. Ian Chiu was a quarter inch behind
Harris and placed third.

🏃 Monarch girls qualify five, boys four for state track

HILL CITY – The Plainville girls and the Trego boys won the
team titles at Friday’s 2A Hill City Track and Field Regional. The Cardinals
scored 88 points, outdistancing second place Ellis by 15 ½ points. The Golden
Eagle boys scored 87 points and edged second place Hoxie by five points.

The Plainville girls won three events and qualified four
individual in six events for the 2A State Track and Field Meet. Gracie Kerns
won the long jump and triple jump, Jada Rathbun the 200 and Brooklyn Staab the
discus. Emma Rudman finished second in the shot put and discus and Staab was second
in the high jump. The Cardinals also finished first in the 4x100 meter relay. 
 
The Plainville boys had seven individual qualify along with one relay. Brayden
Bittell was second in the discus. Jonah Smith finished third in the shot put,
Carter Cellmer was third in the triple jump and Brady Bouchey third in the 100
meters. Chayse McCullough finished fourth in the 3200 meters, Harley Padgett
fourth in the 110 high hurdles and the Cardinals finished fourth in the 4x100
meter relay. 
 
The Ellis girls qualified four individuals in five events plus two relays.
Emily Eck won the 800 and the Railers won the 4x400 meter relay. Grace Eck was
second in the 800, Abigail North finished third in the 200 and Madelyn Russell
placed third in the 3200 and fourth in the 1600. 
 
The Ellis boys qualified two individuals and the 4x400 meter relay which
finished first. Jacy Fischer finished second in the high jump and Rex Johnson
was fourth in the javelin.

The Trego boys qualified five
individuals in seven events along with two relays. Wyndon Giefer won the 3200
meters and finished second in the 1600. James Kreigh won the 200 and finished
second in the 100. Trevyne Brown placed third in both the 100 and 200. Gunner Wilson
won the triple jump and Owen Day was second in the javelin. The Golden Eagles
won the 4x400 meter relay and finished second in the 4x100. 
 
The Trego girls qualified two individual. Lily Shubert won the 100 hurdles and
pole vault. Myah Mattheyer finished second in the triple jump.

The 2A State Track and Field meet takes place Saturday at Cessna Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University.

events and was a member of the first place 4x100 meter relay team as the Knights
finished third at Friday’s Mankato 1A Regional Track and Field meet. Golden
Plains won the girls team title with 62 points, Quinter finished second with 54
and the Knights were right behind scoring 51.

KANSAS CITY, Mo (AP) — Miguel Cabrera hit a solo homer and a grand slam, doubling his season total to four home runs and leading Detroit over the Kansas City Royals 7-5 Friday night for the Tigers' eighth win in 11 games.

The 38-year-old homered in the second off Mike Minor for the game's first run, then overcame a 5-3 deficit in the seventh against Greg Holland with his sixth slam, the 491st home run of his big league career.

“We try to make the moves that are going to give us the best shot,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “Sometimes they are going to work and sometimes they are not. He gets into a full count and he’s a good hitter that is starting to put some things together, and he made us pay.”

Cabrera, hampered by a left biceps strain earlier this season, raised his average from .198 to .204 with his 42nd multihomer game. With 2,887 hits, he moved into 41st place.

JaCoby Jones and Jake Rogers started the seventh with singles off Minor, and Tyler Zuber (0-1) relieved.

“I love our guys’ approach right now,” Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said. "I think we showed a little fight coming back a couple of different times after they scored. That is a good sign for us.”

Robbie Grossman singled to load the bases and with Jonathan Schoop at the plate, Jones was thrown out at home after a 2-2 fastball in the dirt got past Salvador Perez and bounced just behind the home plate circle. The catcher made an underhand toss to Zuber, and the pitcher had an easy tag on Jones, who did not slide.

Schoop worked out an eight-pitch walk, Jeimer Candelario took a called third strike, and Holland relieved. Cabrera drove the full-count hanging slider just over the wall in left-center, in front of the fountain area.

“I made the count 3-2 and he gave me a good pitch to hit and came through with a home run,” Cabrera said.

José Ureña (2-4) allowed five runs and 10 hits in six innings.

Bryan Garcia, José Cisnero and Michael Fulmer combined for three hitless innings of relief, with Fulmer getting three straight outs for his fourth save in four chances as the Tigers matched their longest winning streak this year at four games.

Minor gave up four runs and 10 hits in six innings with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Carlos Santana's two-run single put the Royals ahead in the second, but the Tigers built a 3-2 lead on RBI singles by Nico Goodrum and Wilson Ramos in the fourth.
