GARDEN CITY – The Hays High softball team began their busy week by being swept in Garden City. The Indians lost 3-0 in game one then saw the Buffs score four runs in the bottom of the sixth and dropped the second contest 9-5.
The Indians are now 5-5 and 5-3 in the Western Athletic Conference with all three losses to Garden City. They are back on the road Tuesday for a doubleheader at Dodge City.
Game 1: Garden City 3, Hays 0
The Indians were held to three singles and struck out 10 times.
The Buffs scored twice in the second on a one-out double than added another run in the fourth on a passed ball.
Riley Dreher (2-2) allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Dreher, Dezerea Schmidt and Morgen Berry had the Indians only hits.
Game 2: Garden City 9, Hays 5
The Buffs scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to break a
5-5 tie. They took advantage of two errors and two walks in the decisive frame.
Down 5-1, the Indians rallied with three in the third on a Morgen Berry sac fly and Elle Dreiling two-run double. Berry’s two-out double scored Riley Dreher with the tying run in the fifth.
Aubree Thomas (3-3) allowed only one earned run and struck out 11 with three walks but suffered the loss.
The Indians committed eight errors and struck out 13 times in the game.
Dreher finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored. Berry and Dreiling both drove in two runs and Dezerea Schmidt the other.
