⚾ Larks' ninth-inning rally falls short in loss to Bee Jays

HAYS – For the first time this season, the Hays Larks have dropped back-to-back games. Hays managed just three hits and committed three errors in a 4-3 loss to the Liberal Bee Jays in the series finale Wednesday night at Larks Park.

The Bee Jays (16-8-1, 13-6 RMBL) took advantage of a Larks error in the second inning. A single, walk and error loaded the bases before Jhett Huffman was hit by a pitch to force in the game's first run. Josiah Rojas followed with a groundout to score another run, giving Liberal a 2-0 lead.

The Bee Jays added two insurance runs in the sixth on a fielder's choice and sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Larks (20-4, 15-4 RMBL) mounted a late rally in the ninth Cooper Holtorf launched a three-run home run to cut the deficit to one. Hays then drew two walks to put the tying run in scoring position, but Dylan LaRue struck out to end the game.

Larks starter Simon Lunsford struck out 12, walked two and allowed just one hit over six innings. Both of the runs he gave up were unearned.

Brooks Kappelmann (1-0) earned the win for Liberal, allowing one hit over five scoreless innings while striking out five and walking three. The Bee Jays won two of the three games in the series at Larks Park.

The Larks open a two-game series with the Fort Collins Foxes Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Larks Park.
