KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Tyrann Mathieu said everything necessary about the Kansas City Chiefs defense without uttering a word.

The All-Pro safety was tailing a play late in the first half Sunday night against Buffalo when Bills quarterback Josh Allen heaved a pass down the sideline. It soared over Mathieu’s head, then right over that of safety Daniel Sorensen, landing in the hands of tight end Dawson Knox for a 53-yard touchdown reception.

Mathieu put his hands on the sides of his helmet in disbelief — an image that summarized their weather-delayed, defensive-deficient 38-20 loss to the Bills on Sunday night in a rematch of their AFC championship game.

“I mean, honestly just beating ourselves,” Mathieu said. “If you look back at it, the Ravens game — miscommunication, blown coverages. The Chargers game, the same thing. And tonight. I think most of the explosive plays were guys running wide open down the field. We’re going to practice that. Coach and teach that and find a way to dig deep.”

That touchdown pass to Knox wasn’t the first blown assignment by Sorensen, either. He also blew a tackle on Devin Singletary on second-and-10, watching him go for nine yards and nearly a first down, and the pass coverage on Stefon Diggs on a 61-yard reception later in the first half.

All of which must have made the hour-long lightning delay at the break seem like an eternity.

The rest of the Chiefs defense was nearly as bad. They watched the Kansas City offense turn the ball over four times without forcing one of their own. They gave up 315 yards through the air, 121 on the ground and 8.1 yards per play.

“They’re embarrassed,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “We didn’t play well. We all are. You surely don’t want to play that way any time, let alone at home. We have to do better, from the coaches on down to the players. We have to do better.”

None of it should have been too surprising.

The Chiefs entered the game second-to-last in the NFL in total defense and scoring, and they were dead last in allowing 6.9 yards per play. And lest anyone think they are bad at one thing, consider this: They gave up 251 yards rushing to the Ravens a few weeks ago, then gave up 358 through the air in last week’s game in Philadelphia.

It didn’t help matters Sunday night that they played without Chris Jones, their best pass rusher, who had been ineffective the last couple weeks while nursing a wrist injury. Or that cornerback Charvarius Ward was out with a quad injury.

The problems facing defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo are a whole lot bigger than a couple injured players, though.

Some of it can be traced all the way to the top.

The Chiefs haven’t selected a defensive player in the first round since 2015, when they selected long-departed cornerback Marcus Peters. Their second-round picks have been misses — defensive end Tanoh Kpassagnon in 2017 and Breeland Speaks the following year are also long gone, and Willie Gay Jr. has yet to be productive.

So the Chiefs have been forced to rely on players such as Sorensen, an undrafted free agent who has managed to cling to the bottom of the roster for years, and linebacker Ben Niemann, another heavily relied upon undrafted player.

The lack of investment in the defense has been evident all season.

PITTSBURGH -- Ben Roethlisberger threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns, rookie Najee Harris ran for a career-best 122 yards and the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Denver Broncos 27-19 on Sunday to snap a three-game losing streak.

Riding the kind of balance that's been rare during a sluggish opening month, the Steelers handed the Broncos (3-2) a second straight loss.

Denver fell behind by 18 points in the third quarter before rallying behind quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who started after spending the week in the NFL's concussion protocol. Bridgewater completed 24 of 38 passes for 288 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns. He led Denver inside the Pittsburgh 10 in the final minute, but his fourth-down pass attempt in the back of the end zone to Courtland Sutton was picked off by James Pierre.

The loss made Denver’s perfect September look more like a mirage. The Broncos piled up wins against the New York Giants, Jacksonville and the New York Jets last month. Tested by Baltimore and Pittsburgh in back-to-back weeks, the Broncos came up short.

Denver's pass rush failed to produce much against Pittsburgh's struggling offensive line and with Harris giving the NFL's worst rushing offense some life — his 100-yard game was the first by a Steelers running back in nearly a year — offensive coordinator Matt Canada's playbook finally opened up.

Roethlisberger, who entered Sunday as the league's 27th-rated quarterback while weathering questions about whether he can still be effective in his 18th season, was the beneficiary.

The 39-year-old was sacked just once and completed 15 of 25 passes, including a 50-yard touchdown to Diontae Johnson and an 18-yard score to Chase Claypool that gave the Steelers a seemingly comfortable 24-6 lead with 2:41 to go in the third quarter.

Bridgewater finally started to find a rhythm, finding Kendall Hinton for a 2-yard score and lobbing a rainbow down the left sideline that a diving Sutton snagged as he crossed the goal line to get the Broncos within five.

It just wasn't enough on a day Denver missed a handful of opportunities to flip momentum.

Three times the Broncos appeared to have their hands on an interception only to have the ball fall harmlessly to the turf. Running back Javonte Williams ripped off a 49-yard run only to spike the ball after getting tackled at the Pittsburgh 1. The act drew a delay-of-game penalty and the Broncos ended up settling for a field goal.

A pass-interference penalty on Kyle Fuller set up Harris' 1-yard dive and a rare “leverage” penalty on a Pittsburgh field-goal attempt instead gave the Steelers a first down. Three plays later, Roethlisberger connected with Claypool to give the Steelers an 18-point lead and a bit of peace following a tumultuous stretch.

Broncos: Cornerback Mike Ford (knee) left in the second half and did not return.

Steelers: Lost wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster with a shoulder injury in the second quarter after getting tackled following a 3-yard gain on an end-around. ... Inside linebacker Devin Bush left in the third quarter with an unspecified leg injury. ... Harris departed late with a cramping issue.

TOPEKA, Kan. – Yager Stadium was the site of yet another tight battle between Fort Hays State and Washburn on Saturday. After the Tigers won two years ago in overtime, Washburn returned the favor and clipped the Tigers 23-20 in the extra period. FHSU settled for a field goal on the first possession of overtime and Washburn ended the game with 19-yard touchdown pass.

Six of the last seven meetings between the two teams have been decided by six points or less.

Fort Hays State had ample opportunities to extend a first-half lead but wound up only leading 7-0 at halftime. A 5-yard pass from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6146">Chance Fuller</a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6130">Hunter Budke</a>&nbsp;accounted for all of the lone touchdown of the first half. On the Tigers' first drive of the second quarter, they were stopped on 3rd-and-1 just past midfield and punted the ball away. On the next drive, the Tigers marched the ball to the Washburn 6-yardline and settled to kick a field goal that was blocked. Both teams chewed up clock in the first half as the Tigers had the ball only three times and the Ichabods had it four times.

Washburn evened the score on its first possession of the second half with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Mitch Schurig to James Letcher, Jr. The Tigers responded when Fuller found&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6171">Josh Okechukwu</a>&nbsp;for a 36-yard touchdown pass with 4:35 to go in the third quarter. After a Washburn field goal, the Tigers went into the fourth quarter with a 14-10 lead. A pair of penalties led to an FHSU drive stalling out early in the fourth quarter and then Washburn came up with a momentum-changing play when Schurig found Peter Afful down the left sideline for a 65-yard touchdown pass. The Ichabods led for the first time in the game, 17-14, with 10:33 to play in regulation.

The Fort Hays State defense came up with the stop it needed with 5:11 to go in the game and the offense had a chance to give the Tigers a victory in regulation. The Tigers marched the ball to the Washburn 14, where it had a pair of chance to push the ball deep on second and third down. But Tiger receivers were unable to haul in the big catch needed and FHSU settled for a 31-yard field goal from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6122">Fernando Avila-Castro</a>&nbsp;with 58 seconds to go. After the Ichabods' first play on the ensuing drive did not gain much, they played conservative to go to overtime. The Tigers got the ball first in overtime and came up a yard short of a first down. They settled for an Avila-Castro 33-yard field goal on 4th-and-1. Washburn had 3rd-and-4 from the 19 on their possession of the ball and Schurig found Letcher over the middle as he scooped a low pass from hitting the ground for the game-winning touchdown. Fort Hays State outgained Washburn 386-357 in the game. Fuller threw for 319 yards and two touchdowns and Okechukwu had his first 100-yard receiving game as a Tiger with 108 yards on five catches. The rushing game struggled to get going as the team produced just 67 yards, led by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6186">Adrian Soto</a>&nbsp;with 40.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6167">Myles Menges</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6157">John Johnson</a>&nbsp;led the Tigers with 14 tackles each, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6173">Jhimon Preston</a>&nbsp;added 10. The Tigers had a season-high six sacks in the game, led by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6180">Javaris Sanders</a>&nbsp;with two. HAYS – The TMP-Marian defense collected it fourth
shutout in-a-row and the Monarchs passing game showed up in a big way as they
knocked off the Southwestern Heights Mustangs 41-0 Friday at Lewis Field in Hays.

Both teams got off to a slow start with a scoreless first
quarter but just three plays into the second quarter the Monarchs offense found
its rhythm, capping off an eight-play, 56-yard drive with a three-yard Bryce Seib
touchdown to put TMP up 7-0.

Seib scored three touchdowns for the second time in three
weeks for TMP. 

Leading 7-0 with just under two-minutes left in the first
half TMP’s Kade Harris found Jace Wentling for an 18-yard pitch and catch to put
TMP up 14-0.

Two plays later Andrew Schwartz record his second
interception of the season to set TMP up at the Mustangs 38-yard line. After a
bad snap Harris found Schwartz for a 55-yard score that made it 20-0 TMP. 

Out of the halftime break Seib capped off a seven-play
50-yard drive with a three-yard run to make it 27-0. Seib his third rushing touchdown
less than five minutes later putting TMP up 34-0.

The final score came just five second into the fourth
quarter on a nine-yard Lance Lang touchdown run to put TMP up 41-0.

TMP’s Kade Harris threw for 241 yards and two touchdowns.
Jace Wentling hauled in a career-high eight catches for 121 yards. 

Unofficially the Monarchs tallied 404 total yards with 163 coming
on the ground. Seib had 63 rushing yards.

TMP held Southwestern Heights to just 141 total yards. 58
yards came on one play at the end of the first half.

No TMP team since 1970 has tallied four straight shutouts
and it’s the most in a season since the 1982 team recorded six shutouts.

TMP improves to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in 2A district number
seven. They will travel to take on Cimarron Friday night. The Bluejays are also
5-1 overall and 3-0 in the district.

Hays got off to a slow start, netting just one yard on their first two drives that resulted in punts. Dodge City scored in between the two Indian three-and-outs on a 11 play 83 yard drive for a 7-0 advantage.

Hays struck on their third series of the first quarter when Jaren Kanak broke loose for a 45 yard touchdown capping a two play drive. The Jack Fields extra point tied the game at seven.

The Red Demons would hold one more lead at 10-7 following a 50 yard field goal from Dodge City Manny Aguilar.&nbsp;

Hays would score on their next five drives of the second and third quarter and vault to a 39-10 lead. It started when Kanak found Kyreese Groen for 69 yards and a touchdown on the first play of the drive. Hays took a 13-10 lead and never trailed again, winning 39-17.

Kanak scored three rushing touchdowns on the night and passed for two more. The second throwing score was to Bryce Salmans. Roy Maroni added a touchdown rush of one yard to cap the Hays scoring in the third quarter.

Hays put up 396 yards in the victory. Dodge City was held to 276.

The Indians are 5-1 on the year and finish WAC play at 3-1. Dodge City falls to 4-2 and 2-1. Hays plays at home next week for their homecoming game against 5-1 Maize South.

Tabor evened up the match when Tiana Shelton came back from a first set loss to defeat Diaz 6-2 and 10-2 in the final two sets at No. 2. Geanna Richard did the same, coming back from a first set loss to defeat Stemmer at No. 1 6-3 and 11-9 over the final two sets. Stemmer extended the tiebreaker by tying the score 9-9, but Richard won the last two points contested to push Tabor over the top. Hastings (Neb.) won the boys and girls race. Hoxie was the top MCL finisher in the

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - The FHSU men's soccer team broke a scoreless tie with a late goal and knocked off Northeastern State 1-0 on Thursday afternoon. The Tigers notched the only score of the match in the 88th&nbsp;minute and held off a late flurry of activity from NSU for the win. The Tigers improved to 6-3-1 (3-1 GAC) and the Riverhawks fell to 5-6 (3-2 GAC).

After a scoreless first half, the Tigers came out determined to find the net. The Tigers benefitted from a ball misplayed by the RiverHawks goalkeeper and defenders that rebounded off the left post right to&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6262">Ivan Villalba</a>&nbsp;standing in front of an empty net. Villalba knocked the ball home for the winning goal with just over two minutes remaining. Tiger goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6244">Kieran Brown</a>&nbsp;only needed to make one save in the match as he and the Tigers picked up their second clean sheet of the season. Women's 5K Black Race (JuCo/NAIA) - 9:00 a.m. Men's 8K Black Race (JuCo/NAIA) - 9:35 a.m. Women's 5K Gold Race (NCAA DII/Open) - 10:25 a.m. Men's 8K Gold Race (NCAA DII/Open) - 11:00 a.m. The Fort Hays State cross country team will host the 2021 FHSU Tiger Open on Saturday (Oct. 9) at the Sand Plum Nature Trail in Victoria, Kan. The first of four races will begin at 9 a.m. This is the ninth edition of the Tiger Open and is slated to be the largest in meet history. 785 individuals from 40 different schools are currently entered across the four races. 🏃 Nearly 800 runners to compete at FHSU Tiger Open Saturday in Victoria

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Andy Reid spent time last week tracking down coaches and players that have worked with Josh Gordon, trying to get their opinion of a wildly talented wide receiver who couldn’t seem to steer clear of off-the-field troubles.

The most important conversation for Reid, though? That was with Gordon himself.

“I’m not going to get into the exacts on that,” Reid said, “but he’s been doing well. The league keeps a close eye on that and they feel very comfortable with how he’s handled the last few months. He feels good about himself.

“I mean, he’s a good kid,” Reid said, “and we all have our issues and he’s working through those things.”

The Chiefs signed Gordon to the practice squad last week, shortly after he was reinstated by the league from his sixth suspension — most of them drug-related. And they added him to the 53-man roster on Tuesday, making it clear that they expect the wide receiver to be a contributor when they play Buffalo on Sunday night.

“He feels like he’s in pretty good shape,” Reid said, “and he wants to get going. He has experience. And I’ve learned over the years the veteran guys, they know how they’re feeling and where they’re at. They know what’s ahead of them. They don’t want to embarrass themselves. He feels good about it. We’ll get this started and see where it goes from there.”

It can take players years to fully absorb Reid’s vast offensive playbook, especially given that it changes from week to week and year to year.

The current incarnation with its run-pass options and gadget plays is particularly overwhelming for new players, and asking Gordon to know all the nuances after just one week is ridiculous.

But the Chiefs figure to have a package of plays that Gordon is able to understand for their AFC title game rematch with Buffalo. And it helps Gordon’s cause that some of the terminology is the same as what he once learned in Cleveland.

“He’s a tremendous guy. You can tell he loves playing football,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “He loves being here. Loves being part of this locker room. And the talent you can just see, how fast he is, how big he is, how good he gets in and out of cuts. We’ll try to speed him up as quickly as possible and utilize his skillset.”

That’s what is taking place on the field. Away from the field, the Chiefs are trying to welcome Gordon into a locker room that is among the most closely knit in the league, and one that will be expected to keep him on the right path.

“He has those Texas ties so we’ve talked about the Astros, going to Baylor, stuff like that,” Mahomes said, “and seeing how humble the guy is, he wants to be here. Wants to be part of this locker room. I’m sure he’ll want to continue that.”

In other news Wednesday, second-year linebacker Willie Gay Jr. returned to practice after coming off injured reserve. Gay hurt his toe and landed on the IR list in early September, and the Chiefs now have a 21-day window to activate him.

“We’ll get him out there and see what he can do,” Reid said, without putting any expectations on Gay. “It looks like he’s running around pretty good. We’ll see when we get to the football side of it.”

Also returning to practice were defensive end Frank Clark, who has played just one game because of two hamstring injuries, and Charvarius Ward, who has missed the past couple of weeks with a quadriceps injury.

Clark is also dealing with some off-the-field issues. He pleaded not guilty Monday in Los Angeles to a pair of charges related to the possession of an assault rifle and is due back in court in January. The charges carry a sentence of up to three years in prison, though prosecutors have not determined what sentence they will seek in the case.

“When he’s in the building, he’s good,” Reid said. “I’m sure that’s on his mind. I’m sure. But when he’s here it’s about football, making sure he’s doing his job to the best of his ability. Get healthy right now. That’s kind of the primary thing.”

TOPEKA - The Kansas State High School Activities Association has released the new district football assignments for the 2022 and 2023&nbsp;football seasons. TMP-Marian is in Class 2A District 8 which includes Beloit, Phillipsburg, Norton and Russell.

Ellis in Class 1A District 8 which also has Johnson-Stanton County, Oakley, Plainville and Syracuse.

In Class 1A Division I,&nbsp;Atwood-Rawlins County, Hill City, Hoxie, Oberlin-Decatur Community, Quinter and Stockton are in District 6.&nbsp;Greensburg-Kiowa County, La Crosse, Macksville, Ness City, Pratt-Skyline, WaKeeney-Trego Community are in District 7.
