Winning the Colby Orange and Black Classic has moved the Hays High boys basketball team up to No. 4 in the latest Class 5A rankings from the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association released on Tuesday.

The TMP-Marian girls are ranked 10th in Class 3A. The Monarchs are coming off  the Mid-Continent League Tournament championship. The team they beat in the semifinals, Smith Center, sits at No. 7 in Class 2A.

The Trego boys are ranked eighth in Class 2A

The Hays High girls' opponent this Friday, Salina Central, is ranked No. 1 in Class 5A.

The Liberal and Dodge City girls' team remain ranked in 6A. The Redskins are eighth and the Red Demons ninth. The Dodge City boys are ranked fourth.

Osborne and Wheatland/Grinnell are the only area schools with both their boys and girls teams ranked. The Bulldog boys are third and girls sixth in 1A Division I. The Thunderhawk boys are fifth and girls tenth in 1A Division II.

(AP) -&nbsp;Ochai Agbaji scored a career-high 37 points to help No. 5 Kansas avenge its only conference loss of the season with a 94-91 double overtime win over No. 13 Texas Tech on Monday night. Agbaji outdueled Bryson Williams, who poured in 33 points for Tech. Agbaji, the reigning co-Big 12 Player of the Week, had seven of Kansas’ eight made 3-pointers. He had 24 points in the second half and two overtimes. Agbaji hit a guarded 3-pointer near the end of the first overtime to send the game to another period.

“It was kind of like our game Saturday (when KU overcame a 17-point second-half deficit to beat Kansas State) and the Chiefs game” Agbaji said. “When we went to overtime, I thought (the Chiefs) won at all costs. We have to do the same thing. That was so much fun.” An exhausted Kansas coach Bill Self had nothing but praise for his star.

“It was a great win,” he said after the game. “We played a terrific team that played terrific. We didn’t play great, but we played good. We had one guy go off. “I think we can play better, but I don’t know if an individual can play better. I told him that I don’t ever remember us having a player play better than that.” Kansas led by one in the second overtime when Williams banked in a 3-pointer. KJ Adams tipped in a miss to tie the game at 91 with 1:39 left. Jalen Wilson gave the Jayhawks (17-2, 6-1 Big 12) the lead, hitting the second of two free throws 21 seconds later. After both teams went scoreless over the next 50 seconds, Christian Braun hit two free throws with 10.1 seconds remaining to make it a 94-91. Terrence Shannon missed a 3-pointer that would have tied it a few seconds later. Braun added 15 points for Kansas, which also got 13 from David McCormack.

Texas Tech (15-3, 5-3) got 17 points from Kevin Obanor and 15 for Davion Warren. 

Agbaji and Williams carried their teams early in the second half. Williams had 11 second-half points by the second media timeout. After Texas Tech trimmed the deficit to 3 points, Kansas went on an 8-0 run to grab its first double-digit lead of the game. 

“He gave us problems last year (with UTEP), he gave us problems when we played them at Tech, and he gave us problems tonight,” Agbaji said. “He’s a great player. He’s a dangerous, complete player.” 

After Kansas grabbed its biggest lead of the game at 70-58, Texas Tech scored the next six points to start a 17-5 run to close regulation. Trailing 75-73, Terrence Shannon hit two free throws to tie the game with 12.8 seconds left. Agbaji’s 3-pointer at the regulation buzzer caromed off. 

In the first overtime, Williams put Tech up 80-77 in the first overtime before Agbaji hit 1-of-2 free throws. Obanor then drained a 3-pointer. Braun cut it to 83-80 with a running layup, but Warren extended it to 85-80. Agbaji answered with a layup with 1:09 left. 

Kansas then closed the OT with a 6-1 run capped by Agbaji contested 3-pointer with 7 seconds left to tie the score at 86. 

When asked if this was the best game of his career, Agbaji simply said, “Yes, it had to have been.”

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders learned that sweeping Kansas is really tough. Tech defeated Kansas 75-67 Jan. 8 in Lubbock.

The win pushed the Tigers to 14-3 overall and 9-3 in the MIAA, while the Griffons fell to 8-10 overall and 4-6 in the MIAA. An early 7-0 burst gave Missouri Western an early 13-5 lead, but the Tigers came storming back out of the first media break and went on a 31-12 run for nearly 12 minutes to jump ahead and take an 11-point lead at 36-25. But with some trapping pressure late in the first half, the Griffons went on an 8-0 run to end the half and cut the Tiger lead down to three at 36-33.

The Tigers took their lead back into double figures at the 14:53 mark of the second half and kept it there all the way up until two and a half minutes remaining in the game. The Tigers looked to have the game nearly put away, leading by 17 (68-51) with 6:10 to play, and reached the 17-point margin three times in the second half. However, the Griffons made a late push and outscored the Tigers 20-8 over the final six minutes of the contest. The Tigers did enough at the free-throw line inside a minute to hold off the charge.

🏀 Tigers hang on for win at Missouri Western

<a href="https://radio.securenetsystems.net/cwa/KJLS">LISTEN LIVE</a> Fort Hays State men's basketball returns to action on Monday afternoon in its make-up game at Missouri Western. The game is set to start at 3:30 pm in St. Joseph inside the MWSU Fieldhouse. This game was originally scheduled on January 15, but it was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols within the MWSU men's program. The Tigers are coming off a pair of wins at home this past week, knocking off Missouri Southern by 18 points on Thursday and Pittsburg State by 19 on Saturday. The Tigers are now 13-3 overall and 8-3 in the MIAA. This game marks the first of a string of four straight road contests for the Tigers. They are scheduled to play at Nebraska-Kearney later this coming week on Saturday, then head to Newman and Central Oklahoma the following week. The Griffons enter this contest at 8-9 overall and 4-5 in the MIAA. They are on a five-game losing streak going back to December 18. Missouri Western will be playing its first game since January 13. Fort Hays State continues to win games with strong defense this season, allowing on average just 57.9 points per game. The Tigers rank second in NCAA Division II in scoring defense just by a tenth of a point behind West Alabama at 57.8 points allowed per game. Fort Hays State has held opponents to less than 60 points in 12 of 16 contests so far this season and have a record of 11-1 in those contests. The Tigers are coming off a pair of wins at home this past week, knocking off Missouri Southern by 18 points on Thursday and Pittsburg State by 19 on Saturday. The Tigers are now 13-3 overall and 8-3 in the MIAA. This game marks the first of a string of four straight road contests for the Tigers. They are scheduled to play at Nebraska-Kearney later this coming week on Saturday, then head to Newman and Central Oklahoma the following week. The Griffons enter this contest at 8-9 overall and 4-5 in the MIAA. They are on a five-game losing streak going back to December 18. Missouri Western will be playing its first game since January 13. Fort Hays State continues to win games with strong defense this season, allowing on average just 57.9 points per game. The Tigers rank second in NCAA Division II in scoring defense just by a tenth of a point behind West Alabama at 57.8 points allowed per game. Fort Hays State has held opponents to less than 60 points in 12 of 16 contests so far this season and have a record of 11-1 in those contests. The lead changed hands three times in the final two minutes of regulation before Harrison Butker, who earlier missed a field goal and extra point, drilled a 49-yarder for Kansas City as time expired to force overtime.

The Chiefs won the coin toss, marched swiftly downfield against the NFL's top-ranked but exhausted defense, and right into their fourth straight AFC title game. They'll play the Bengals next Sunday night for a spot in the Super Bowl.

Mahomes finished with 378 yards passing and three touchdowns, including a 64-yarder to Tyreek Hill during the thrilling final minutes of regulation. The Chiefs ended the Bills' season inside Arrowhead Stadium for the second straight year.

Josh Allen did everything in his power to prevent it. He threw a go-ahead touchdown pass to Gabriel Davis with 1:54 left in the regulation, then another to Davis — his playoff-record fourth TD catch — with 13 seconds remaining.

Allen finished with 329 yards passing, and Davis with eight catches for 201 yards, as the Bills — who had beaten the Chiefs soundly in October — lost their ninth straight road playoff game dating to their last victory in the 1992 season's AFC championship.

In a playoff game for the history books Sunday night, the Bills and Chiefs played 58 minutes that few will remember. And about two minutes and an overtime that few will forget.

The Chiefs were leading 26-21 when Allen, who had been nearly perfect all night, connected with Davis for the third time in the game — a fourth-and-13 dart that gave the Bills the lead.

PLAINVILLE – The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys and girls
basketball sweep swept the Mid-Continent League tournament titles on Saturday
afternoon in Plainville. The girls knocked of seventh ranked Phillipsburg while
the TMP boys beat eighth ranked Trego.

Girls: TMP 52, Phillipsburg 46 The TMP girls used a 20-10 first half run and then held off
a late Phillipsburg rally to claim their first MCL tournament title since 2018
with a 52-46 win over the Panthers.

The first three field goals of the game were three pointers
that gave Phillipsburg a 6-3 lead. TMP (9-2, 5-0 MCL) answered back with a 23-6
run to go up double-digits midway through the second quarter at 26-12. 

Sophia Balthazor scored nine first-half points on three
three-point field goals. Jaci VonLintel added 10 of her team-high 20 points in
the first half.

The Monarchs built a 14-point lead twice in the early moments
of the third quarter. The final time at 35-21 on a VonLintel three-pointer.

Phillipsburg (9-3, 6-0 MCL) answered wit ha 20-7 run to end
the third quarter and begin the fourth quarter to pull within one at 42-41.

The Panthers were then able to tie the game at 45 but TMP
finished the game on a 7-1 run to secure the 52-46 victory.

A night after scoring 22 points in the MCL semifinals Jaci
VonLintel led TMP with 20 points and seven rebounds. Sophia Balthazor added 13 points.

Boys: TMP 47, Trego 34 It took the TMP Monarchs (8-2, 4-0) and the Trego Golden
Eagles (10-1, 3-0 MCL) a little bit to find their offense in the final game of
the night and when they did TMP proved to be too much for the seventh ranked
Eagles in a 47-34 victory.

The game was tied at two for the first six minutes until the
Monarchs’ Kenton Ginther knocked down a three-pointer that sparked a 20-10 run
to end the first quarter and into the second quarter putting TMP up 22-12 at
halftime.

Trego was able to trim the TMP lead back to eight at 27-19
but Bryce Seib connected on his first three-pointer of the game putting TMP
back up double-figures at 30-19.

Trego was able to close within six late in the third quarter
but TMP again had the answer. This Time Gavin Unrein and Dylan Werth scored
four straight to put TMP up 37-27 at the end of three quarters.

After scoring the final two points of the third quarter
Werth scored the first five of the first quarter helping TMP build a 15-point
fourth quarter lead. 

TMP went on to the 47-34 win clinching their second MCL
tournament title in three years.

Dylan Werth scored a season-high 20 points and Jace Wenting
pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

COLBY - Hays High made their ninth championship appearance in the Colby Orange &amp; Black tournament on Saturday. The Indians faced the Olathe North Eagles.&nbsp;

Hays led wire-to-wire in a dominating win over Olathe North 63-42. The game was never closer than 4-2 with 6:00 left in the first quarter. The Eagles had the ball down 12-6 but failed to score. Hays embarked on a 20-0 run that lasted 6:21. Olathe North did not score for 8:25 as Hays built their lead to 32-6. The Indians continued to lead by 26 at halftime 40-14.

The Indians were never threatened in the second half as they led by at least twenty the entire third and fourth quarters. Jace Linenberger led all scoring with 21. Jordan Dale added 1o.

Linenberger was named tournament MVP and to the All-Tournament team. Dale and Carson Kieffer were also put on the All-Tournament list. Wesley Oakley made the All-Academic team.

Hays improves to 11-1, they travel to Salina to take on the Central Mustangs on Friday.

🏀 Hays boys cruise to Orange & Black Classic title 

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Men's Basketball improved to 13-3 overall and 8-3 in the MIAA with a 70-51 win over Pittsburg State on Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers trailed for only a total of 24 seconds early in the game and held the lead for over 36 minutes in another strong defensive effort, limiting another team to less than 60 points. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6468">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;went past the 800-rebound threshold in his career, becoming the sixth player in school history to reach that mark. He also joined elite company as just the third player in school history to have at least 1,300 points and 800 rebounds, the only other two being Alonzo Goldston (1,766 points, 870 rebounds) and Mike Pauls (1,492 points, 907 rebounds). Vitztum now has 1,360 points and 814 rebounds in his career after recording his eighth double-double of the season on Saturday with 13 points and 16 rebounds in the winning effort.

With the win, the Tigers completed a sweep of all the teams they are scheduled to see just once this regular season, which included Pittsburg State, Missouri Southern, Emporia State, and Washburn. Pittsburg State's only lead of the game happened at the 15:07 mark of the first half, taking a brief 8-6 lead before Vitztum tied the game back up with a jumper. A Pittsburg State technical foul allowed&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6460">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;to make a pair of free tosses and the Tigers led the rest of the way. The Tigers went on an 11-2 run following that technical foul and eventually went on to lead by 18 at the half, 38-20.

The Tigers scored the first six points out of the break, part of an 11-0 run going back to the first half. The 44-20 lead produced the largest margin in the game for the Tigers as they went on to win by 19.  </figure>HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Men's Basketball improved to 13-3 overall and 8-3 in the MIAA with a 70-51 win over Pittsburg State on Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers trailed for only a total of 24 seconds early in the game and held the lead for over 36 minutes in another strong defensive effort, limiting another team to less than 60 points. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6468">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;went past the 800-rebound threshold in his career, becoming the sixth player in school history to reach that mark. He also joined elite company as just the third player in school history to have at least 1,300 points and 800 rebounds, the only other two being Alonzo Goldston (1,766 points, 870 rebounds) and Mike Pauls (1,492 points, 907 rebounds). 🏀 Tigers shut down Gorillas, Vitztum reaches milestone

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Ochai Agbaji hit a baseline jumper with 9 seconds left to lift No. 7 Kansas over Kansas State 78-75 Saturday.

Agbaji’s shot gave Kansas its first lead since early in the first half and snapped K-State’s two-game winning streak against ranked foes. Agbaji scored 29 points.

Kansas, which continues to dominate against its in-state rival, didn’t take the win for granted.

“They should have won today,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “They controlled the game. They were better than us today.

“We weren’t very good in the first half, but they were a lot better than we were bad. They should be 6-1 or 5-2 in the conference.”

Jalen Wilson added 16 points for Kansas (16-2, 5-1 Big 12), and Christian Braun and David McCormack with 11 each.

An emotional Self praised his team’s toughness. Self lost his father, Bill Self Sr., to a long illness Friday morning. He said he didn’t want his players to “win one” for him, but the Jayhawks weren’t about to lose.

“We knew it meant a lot,” Agbaji said. “We went out in the second half and battled. I’m glad that we could get the win for him.”

Kansas State (10-8, 2-5) wasted a career-high 35 points by Nijel Pack. Markquis Nowell had 16 and Selton Miguel added 11.

“We really don’t want any moral victories,” Pack said. “It was great (to have a great game), but it doesn’t mean anything. We got a loss.”

“He was a first-team All-American today,” he said. “He may have been the best guard in America today, but we may have had the best wing in America (in Agbaji).”

Kansas made just 15 of 22 free throws in the second half but was saved by a 45-23 rebounding advantage.

“We knew it was going to be a grind,” Wilson said. “We had to take advantage of our size. I feel like we wanted it more.”

K-State’s shot 10 of 26 from 3-point range.

“Obviously it hurts,” K-State coach Bruce Weber said. “Our guys were ready to play and we played at a magical level. We just didn’t finish. We let a great opportunity slip by.”

Kansas cut a 16-point halftime deficit in half before the first media timeout of the second half with a 9-0 run. K-State got it back to 10 points, but the Jayhawks cut it to four and had multiple chances to trim it even further.

Wilson hit two free throws with 6:51 left to cut it to 65-63. Pack hit his eighth 3-pointer to give K-State a five-point lead. K-State still led by five with 1:39 left. McCormack hit two free throws to cut it to three, and Agbaji hit two free throws with 55.4 left to pull within one.

Nowell missed a 3 at the other end before Agbaji’s go-ahead jumper. Pack missed another 3 with five seconds left, Agbaji grabbed the rebound and made two free throws with a second left.

Kansas: Kansas still feels comfortable in Manhattan. The Jayhawks are 30-5 all-time in Bramlage Coliseum. The Jayhawks also have won 14 of the last 15 games between the two clubs.

Kansas State: The Wildcats proved they could play with the big boys, but they just couldn’t hold the lead long enough. Four of their five losses have come by a combined 11 points.

Kansas hosts No. 18 Texas Tech on Monday.

Kansas State travels to Waco, Texas, Tuesday to face No. 5 Baylor.

HAYS - The Hays High Indian wrestling team won the Bob Kuhn Prairie Classic by 33 points over Manhattan. The Indians scored 153.5 team points, Manhattan finished with 120.5. Kapaun finished in third with 116.5. The Indians had three individual champions. At 132 pounds Harley Zimmerman won with a 9-2 decision. He pinned his two opponents on Friday and is 30-1 on the year.

 Gavin Meyers and Gavin Nutting each pinned their three opponents in the two day tournament. 

Meyers at 220 pounds recorded falls in :48, :58, and 3:02 and moves to 26-0 on the year. 

Nutting in the 285 pound bracket defeated his opponents in 1:03, 1:12 and 1:00. He improves to 31-0 this season.

Zimmerman, Meyers, and Nutting are all ranked in their respective weight classes.

Elijah McCullough was 3-1 and won two of his matches by fall and the other in an 8-3 decision.

Tacoma Augustine was 4-2 for a 4th place finish. Braden Hines finished 6th.

HAYS, Kan. - In a game that featured 20 lead changes and four ties, the No. 2 Fort Hays State women's basketball team rallied from as many as 14 down to defeat Pittsburg State Saturday afternoon, 86-82.&nbsp;It was the largest deficit the Tigers have overcome since rallying from&nbsp;20 down to beat Nebraska-Kearney on the road nearly three years ago (2/2/19). Both teams shot the ball well all afternoon, with the Tigers (16-2, 10-2 MIAA) knocking down 47.6 percent (30-of-63) from the floor. But the Gorillas (11-7, 6-6 MIAA) countered&nbsp;with a shooting percentage of 57.9 percent (33-of-57),&nbsp;the highest shooting percentage FHSU has&nbsp;allowed in more than two years (PSU, 60.7 percent, 1/6/20).

With the visitors outshooting FHSU by 10 percent, the biggest difference in the game came in the turnover category. The Tiger defense forced 18 turnovers thanks to 12 steals, turning those miscues into 20 points. The FHSU offense, on the other hand, tied its season low with just seven turnovers. The teams traded punches early in the first quarter, with the lead changing hands nine times before the first media timeout. Pittsburg State pulled in front by six at the end of the quarter, 25-19, after hitting 4-of-7 from behind the arc in the frame.

Pittsburg State then led by as many as 14 early in the second quarter, 33-19, thanks to a 10-0 run. The Hays High girls wrapped up their appearance at the Colby Orange and Black Classic with a game against Colby for third place Saturday afternoon

Hays led 6-2 and 8-5 in the first quarter before Colby took the lead on a 9-0 run that lasted into the second quarter. The Eagles scored on the opening possession of the quarter for a 14-8 lead but didn't score for the remainder of the half.&nbsp;

Hays used the time to go on a 14-0 run that was capped by a Carly Lang three point play with eight second remaining for halftime and a 22-14 lead at the break.

Colby was able to pull the game to a four point difference at 22-18 early in the third quarter but was never got any closer. Hays was able to take their first double digit lead on a 9-0 run and led 31-21 after three quarters.

Hays led by double figures for nearly the entire fourth quarter and made seven of their final eight free throws for a 45-30 victory.

Carly Lang scored a career high 21. It is the third straight game the junior established a career mark after knocking 15 in the semifinals and grabbed 11 rebounds in the first round.

Hays improves to 7-5 on the year and is off until Friday when they travel to state ranked Salina Central. Colby falls to 5-6 and was led by Brooklyn Jones 18 points.

Jersey Johnson was named to the All-Academic Team. Carly Lang and Molly Martin made the All-Tournament team.

The Tiger men host Pittsburg State at 4 pm, which follows the women's contest at 2 pm. FHSU enters at 12-3 overall, 7-3 in the MIAA, while PSU is 4-13 overall and 3-8 in the MIAA. The Tigers currently sit in fourth place in the MIAA standings, two games back in the loss column of first-place Central Oklahoma (11-1) and second-place Northwest Missouri State (9-1). Emporia State is just a half game back of Northwest Missouri State in the standings at 9-2. The Tigers are now second nationally in scoring defense, allowing 58.3 points per game. West Alabama has been trading the national lead back and forth with FHSU and is back in front at 57.8 points allowed per game. FHSU is one of only four teams in the nation containing opponents on average to less than 60 points per game. FHSU has held opponents under 60 in 11 of its 15 contests so far this season. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6468">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;is on the verge of another milestone on Saturday, needing just two rebounds to reach 800 in his career. He looks to become the sixth player in FHSU history to reach that mark. Even more impressive, he can become just the third FHSU player in history with at least 1,300 points and 800 rebounds in a career. The only other two to reach those marks were Alonzo Goldston (1,766 points, 870 rebounds) and Mike Pauls (1,492 points, 907 rebounds). Vitztum leads the Tigers at 15.3 points and an MIAA-best 10.1 rebounds per game. The Tigers look to snap a two-game losing skid to the Gorillas. The teams are meeting once in the regular season for the third straight year. Pittsburg State won each of the last two contests with Fort Hays State by the score of 79-68, the 2020-21 meeting in Pittsburg and the 2019-20 meeting in Hays. Prior to the recent two-game skid to Pittsburg State, Fort Hays State won five straight games in the series. Bobby Arthur-Williams is the top scorer for the Gorillas, averaging 15.4 points per game, even though he has played in just five games this season. The Tiger men host Pittsburg State at 4 pm, which follows the women's contest at 2 pm. FHSU enters at 12-3 overall, 7-3 in the MIAA, while PSU is 4-13 overall and 3-8 in the MIAA. The Tigers currently sit in fourth place in the MIAA standings, two games back in the loss column of first-place Central Oklahoma (11-1) and second-place Northwest Missouri State (9-1). Emporia State is just a half game back of Northwest Missouri State in the standings at 9-2. The Tigers are now second nationally in scoring defense, allowing 58.3 points per game. West Alabama has been trading the national lead back and forth with FHSU and is back in front at 57.8 points allowed per game. FHSU is one of only four teams in the nation containing opponents on average to less than 60 points per game. FHSU has held opponents under 60 in 11 of its 15 contests so far this season. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6468">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;is on the verge of another milestone on Saturday, needing just two rebounds to reach 800 in his career. He looks to become the sixth player in FHSU history to reach that mark. Even more impressive, he can become just the third FHSU player in history with at least 1,300 points and 800 rebounds in a career. The only other two to reach those marks were Alonzo Goldston (1,766 points, 870 rebounds) and Mike Pauls (1,492 points, 907 rebounds). Vitztum leads the Tigers at 15.3 points and an MIAA-best 10.1 rebounds per game. The Tigers look to snap a two-game losing skid to the Gorillas. The teams are meeting once in the regular season for the third straight year. Pittsburg State won each of the last two contests with Fort Hays State by the score of 79-68, the 2020-21 meeting in Pittsburg and the 2019-20 meeting in Hays. Prior to the recent two-game skid to Pittsburg State, Fort Hays State won five straight games in the series. Bobby Arthur-Williams is the top scorer for the Gorillas, averaging 15.4 points per game, even though he has played in just five games this season. He had 21 for the Gorillas in a loss at Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday evening. PLAINVILLE – The TMP-Marian boys and girls basketball teams earned a pair
of hard fought wins Friday to earn a spot in Saturday’s Mid-Continent League
tournament final.

The TMP (8-2, 5-0 MCL) girls traded basketball all game long with the sixth
ranked Smith Center Lady Red (8-2, 5-0 MCL) but a Jaci VonLintel rebound and put-back in the
closing second of the game lifted TMP to the 52-50 win.

The first quarter featured four ties and four lead changes
as the TMP and Smith Center traded baskets back and forth. The Lady Red closed
the first quarter on a 9-2 run to take their largest lead of the game at five,
14-9 into through one quarter of action.

After trailing by five at the end of the first quarter TMP
flipped the lead around in the second outscoring Smith Center 17-7. TMP hit
three three pointers in the quarter including Megan Hamels at the end of the
quarter to put TMP up 26-21.

The Monarchs opened their biggest lead of the game at 29-21
on a second straight Hamel three to open the third quarter but Smith Center had
an answer.

The Lady Red put together a 14-5 run to give them a brief
one-point lead but Sophia Balthazar hit a three at the end of the third quarter
to put TMP up 37-35.

Neither team was able to gain the upper hand in the fourth
quarter. TMP led by four to start the quarter but Smith Center came back and
took a three-point lead.

Over the final three minutes of the game TMP took the lead
twice only to see Smith Center tie the game back up.

Then with just seven second left, and the game tied at 50, TMP’s
VonLintel collected an offensive rebound and put it in giving TMP the 52-50
victory.

VonLintel led all scorers with a new season-high 22 points.
Emilee Lane added nine points and nine rebounds.

TMP will face Phillipsburg in Saturday’s championship game
after they beat Russell 55-42.

In the final game of the night TMP (7-2, 4-0 MCL) used a strong third quarter
to pull away from the Norton Bluejays (7-3, 4-0 MCL) and pick up a 46-29 victory.

TMP’s Jace Wentling scored the games first four points for a
4-0 TMP lead but after Norton answered with three points of their own the game
saw both offenses struggle for a good portion of the first quarter. 

After TMP built an 8-6 first quarter lead Kenton Ginther
opened the second quarter with the first of his game-high four three’s on the
night to put TMP up 11-6.

A second straight Ginther three put TMP up by five at 14-9.
The Monarchs led by as much as seven in the first half but Norton was able to
close the gap to just two at 19-17 at half-time.

The third quarter belonged to TMP and was the difference in the
game.

The Monarchs outscored Norton 16-6 in the quarter and converted
on four of their seven three point field goals in the quarter to take a 35-23
lead into the fourth quarter.

TMP outscored Norton by five in the fourth quarter on their
way to the 46-29 win.

Ginther led all scorers with that career-high 14 points.

TMP will take on Trego who edged Phillipsburg on a
last-second shot 39-37.

🏀TMP boys and girls to play for MCL tournament championship

Hays High opened the second day of the Orange and Black Classic in Colby with the girls and boys playing in the semifinals. The girls played state ranked Goodland while the boys faced Beloit.

Girls #4-3A Goodland 57 - Hays 55

Hays used a 11-2 run in the first quarter to build a seven point lead at 11-4. Goodland used the final two minutes of the first quarter to go on a 7-0 spurt that tied the game up at 11 through the first eight minutes.

Goodland took their first lead during a five minute scoring drought for Hays. The Cowgirls led by four on three separate occasions and by two at halftime 21-19. Hays had a chance to tie the game with 2:30 left before halftime but missed free and an offensive put back.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hays led a majority of the second half after grabbing the lead at 25-22 with six minutes left in the third quarter. The Indians led by five before the two teams traded three pointers in the final ten seconds for a 36-31 score heading to the fourth quarter.

Hays led 39-33 with six minutes to go in regulation and missed a pair of shots to extend the lead. Goodland took advantage of the situation with a 11-2 run that gave the Cowgirls a 44-41 lead. The Indians tied the game with a three pointer with a minute remaining and Goodland couldn't get a clean look away for overtime&nbsp; tied at 44.

Hays made five of six free throws in the first overtime and Goodland hit two field goals and a free throw for a 49 all tie, which forced a second overtime. Hays ever led in the second overtime and was only tied once at 51. Goodland led 55-54 after the Indians sixth three pointer of the night. Goodland made two free throws at 57-54 and Hays only managed a single point on their final possession, leaving Goodland with a 57-55 victory.

Hays was led by 15 points by both Carly Lang and Jillyan Sheldon, career highs for both players. Molly Martin added 10. Goodland was led by Talexa Weeter with 16. Emma Lehman, Olivia Lehman and Lindsey Cure each added 11.

Hays falls to 6-5 and will play for third place at 2:30 in the auxiliary gym against either Colby or Life Prep Academy. Goodland will play for the championship against the winner of those two teams and is now 11-1 on the year.

Hays trailed only one time against Colby on their road to the championship game. The game was anything but a gimme though. Hays trailed 4-3 before a 12-0 run gave the Indians a 15-4 advantage in the first quarter.&nbsp;

Beloit fired right back with a 9-0 stretch while Hays went silent for over four minutes. The Trojans had three possession to tie or take the lead trailing 15-13 before Hays took a 23-17 lead into the locker room.

The Indians led by double figures early in the third quarter and Beloit cut the lead down to eight after the third quarter and pulled within in five at 37-32 with 5:15 remaining.
