Down 3-0, the Tigers netted a pair of goals to pull within one with ten minutes left, but the Jennies were able to score once more with just under six minutes remaining to seal a victory. The Jennies improved to 11-1-1 (5-0-1 MIAA) and the Tigers fell to 4-6-3 (1-5 MIAA).

The Jennies jumped ahead early as they found the net in the 10th&nbsp;minute and the 30th&nbsp;minute off of a couple of nice crosses into the box to build a 2-0 lead, which was the score at halftime. The game got off to a rocky start for the Tigers when they misplayed the ball into their own net in the 4th&nbsp;minute, giving Newman an early 1-0 advantage. The Tigers righted the ship though less than two minutes later when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6240">Blake Arndt</a>&nbsp;leveled the match with a 1-on-1 breakaway opportunity against the Newman goalkeeper. However, Newman would not go quietly. In the 60th&nbsp;minute, the Newman goalkeeper quickly gave his team a counter attack with several Tigers forward on a corner kick opportunity. He found Felix Tellez Ramirez downfield, who then beat Tiger keeper&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6244">Kieran Brown</a>&nbsp;in a 1-on-1 situation. The goal fueled the Jets and they capitalized on another opportunity in the 64th&nbsp;minute when they received a free kick outside the top of the box. Luke Mills bent the shot into the net off the free kick, knotting the score at 3-3. The Jets continued to fight, but the Tigers found the answer they needed in the 70th&nbsp;minute when De La Torre joined the scoring act with missile from the right side of the box off passes from Facio and Arndt. Though the Jets had a few more decent opportunities for an equalizer, the Tigers held off a second comeback surge. ⚽ Tiger men continue to receive votes top 25 poll

The Hays Middle School volleyball teams finished off their seventh and eighth grade seasons over the weekend with each of the four teams finishing in the top two at the MSWAC tournament.

The 7B and 8B teams each won their division. 7A and 8A each finished in second, falling in three sets.

The four teams combined for 91 victories in just four weeks of competition. 8A finished the year 24-5 with 8B going 23-4. 7A ended their season at 26-5 while 7B went 18-10.

The eighth graders were coached by Donna Ward and Jaycee Dale. Dave Ward and Amber Hildebrand coached the seventh graders.

TOPEKA - The Kansas Volleyball Association is pleased to announce the 2021 Week 6 Volleyball Rankings. Records listed reflect information that was submitted by Monday, October 11.

Locally, TMP-Marian (23-8) fell two spots to No. 10 in 3A. Victoria (23-3) slipped two spots to No. 3 in 1A Division I. Both the Knights losses last week were to ranked teams Ellinwood (No. 4 in 2A) and Central Plains (No. 4 in 1A Division II). IRVING, Texas&nbsp;– Kansas senior Remy Martin has been named the 2021-22 Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year as voted on by the league coaches, the conference announced Wednesday. Joining Martin on the six-member preseason all-league team are KU seniors Ochai Agbaji and David McCormack. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes and there was a tie in this year’s vote. “I’m happy our players are getting preseason recognition but they understand the success of the team will translate to postseason honors,” KU head coach Bill Self said. “I’m glad they are on people’s radars heading into the season.” Martin will play his final season at KU after transferring from Arizona State. The Burbank, California, guard was a three-time All-Pac-12 selection, earning second-team honors as a sophomore and first team his junior and senior seasons. In 2020-21, Martin led the Pac-12 with 19.1 points per game, including 21.5 ppg in conference play. Martin brings career totals of 1,754 points, 466 assists, 151 steals and 176 three-point field goals made to Kansas. Historically, Martin is the 10th&nbsp;Jayhawk to be named the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year and the eighth under head coach Bill Self. Agbaji led Kansas in scoring in 2020-21 at 14.1 points per game and he earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors for the second-straight season. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs practiced without five key starters Wednesday, including wide receiver Tyreek Hill and pass rusher Chris Jones, adding a long list of physical ailments to their battered pride five games into the season.

Hill was out with a bruised quadriceps that he sustained in Sunday night's blowout loss to the Bills, when the Chiefs also lost running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire to a sprained knee ligament. Jones continues to deal with a lingering wrist injury.

Also missing practice with knee inflammation was linebacker Anthony Hitchens, who calls the plays in the middle of the defense. Defensive back Charvarius Ward remained out with a quad injury that sidelined him against Buffalo, and starting guard Joe Thuney missed practice with a broken hand sustained against the Bills.

Backup tight end Blake Bell joined the long list of starters on the sideline with a sore back as the Chiefs, at 2-3 and in last place in the AFC West, prepared for their trip to Washington on Sunday.

“It seems like a long list,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid acknowledged, “but when it's all said and done, we'll get some of these guys back here in the next little bit, which is a positive thing.”

The Chiefs haven't been truly healthy all year, losing safety Tyrann Mathieu to a positive COVID-19 test, defensive end Frank Clark to a hamstring injury and linebacker Willie Gay Jr. to a tie injury before the opener against Cleveland.

This is a new level for the two-time defending AFC champions, though.

Hill managed to finish the game against Buffalo with seven catches for 63 yards, but any injury to the legs of a player whose speed is his primary weapon is worth noting. It's even more important given the fact the Chiefs have few proven pass-catchers besides Hill and tight end Travis Kelce, who picked up a stinger against the Bills.

Thuney took part in Wednesday's walkthrough, even though he missed practice, and Reid said it was unlikely that one of the Chiefs' premier offseason acquisitions would land on the injured reserve list.

“We'll give him a little time here for that thing to settle down,” Reid said. “He'll have a chance to be OK.”

Edwards-Helaire went on the IR list Tuesday with a sprained MCL in his knee, which means Darrel Williams will get the start against Washington with Jerrick McKinnon backing him up. And because the Chiefs typically have three running backs active on game day, the Chiefs signed Elijah McGuire to join Derrick Gore on the practice squad.

Williams has been a key contributor for the Chiefs the past four years, appearing in every game last season and taking on an increased role when Edwards-Helaire sprained his ankle. But he has never before started an NFL game.

“It's something big for my mom and dad," Williams said. “I didn't get drafted, and just the look in my parents' eyes — watching my mom cry — that meant something to me because I had never seen my mom cry. Having that moment and not getting drafted, I took that to heart. Now I get this opportunity. I have to make the most of it.”

On the defensive side, Hitchens has been banged up most of the season. Ward hasn't played since the Chiefs' Week 2 loss in Baltimore, forcing the Chiefs to use a revolving door of fill-ins opposite struggling L'Jarius Sneed. And while Clark came back last week against Buffalo, he managed just two tackles and failed to pressure the quarterback.

Jones might be the biggest missing piece, though. The Chiefs were counting on the two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle to help them generate more pass rush by moving him to defensive end, but after two sacks in the opener against Cleveland he had been held completely in check before missing last week's game against the Bills.

Asked when he'll return, Reid replied: “When he feels comfortable he can play. I mean, that's literally it. When he feels that he can do his job, he'll be back in. He's getting better, though. That's important.”

In the meantime, the Chiefs are pressing on without him.

🏀Women's Basketball Ranked Atop Both MIAA Preseason Polls

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Men's Basketball was tabbed sixth in both the MIAA Coaches and Media Preseason Polls, released on Tuesday (Oct. 12) at MIAA Basketball Media Day inside The College Basketball Experience. Both polls show optimism in the Tigers moving up this season in the standings after tying for seventh in 2020-21. The same five teams sit in front of the Tigers in both polls, just in a little bit different order in the No. 3 through No. 5 spots. Defending national champion Northwest Missouri State was a unanimous choice for the conference regular season title and Washburn was a strong choice for the No. 2 spot in both polls. In the Coaches Poll, Central Oklahoma is third, Missouri Southern is fourth, and Missouri Western is fifth, while in the Media Poll, Missouri Western is third, Missouri Southern is fourth, and Central Oklahoma is fifth. Fort Hays State received 112 voting points in the Coaches Poll, only three points behind Missouri Western. There is a significant drop in voting points behind the Tigers in that poll as Rogers State is seventh with 88 points. In the Media Poll, the Tigers edged Emporia State for the No. 6 spot by just one voting point. KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Men's Basketball was tabbed sixth in both the MIAA Coaches and Media Preseason Polls, released on Tuesday (Oct. 12) at MIAA Basketball Media Day inside The College Basketball Experience. Both polls show optimism in the Tigers moving up this season in the standings after tying for seventh in 2020-21. The same five teams sit in front of the Tigers in both polls, just in a little bit different order in the No. 3 through No. 5 spots. Defending national champion Northwest Missouri State was a unanimous choice for the conference regular season title and Washburn was a strong choice for the No. 2 spot in both polls. In the Coaches Poll, Central Oklahoma is third, Missouri Southern is fourth, and Missouri Western is fifth, while in the Media Poll, Missouri Western is third, Missouri Southern is fourth, and Central Oklahoma is fifth. Fort Hays State received 112 voting points in the Coaches Poll, only three points behind Missouri Western. There is a significant drop in voting points behind the Tigers in that poll as Rogers State is seventh with 88 points. 🏀Tiger Men Picked 6th in Both Coaches and Media Preseason Polls

LAKIN - The Monarchs are heading back to state after a third-place
finish at the 3-2-1A Lakin Regional Monday. 

The Monarchs combined to shoot a 413 as a team. Colby won the team title with a 374 and Hoisington's 408 was good enough for second.

Mykayla Romme finished fifth with a 98 and Ashley Hipp was 10th
with a 102. 

Plainville’s Corbyn Marquess finished second on a playoff at
nine over. 

The 3-2-1A state golf tournament will be in Hesston next Monday
and Tuesday.

⛳TMP finishes 3rd at Lakin; headed back to state

HAYS – The Hays High Indians girls golf team combined to shoot
a 337 and brought home the regional championship at their home course Monday in
Hays.

The Indians placed five in the top 10 in route to the team
championship and their 16th consecutive trip to state.

Taleia McCrae led the Indians with a second-place finish
after she fired a nine-over 81.

Her teammate Evyn Cox was one shot back with an 82 in third place.
Katie Dinkel was fourth, Claire Humphrey seventh and Abbie Norris finished
ninth.

The 5A state tournament will be played at Carey Park in
Hutchinson Monday and Tuesday.

The Tigers jumped out to a commanding lead in the match by winning the first two sets by the same narrow margin of 25-23. Emporia State controlled the third set to win 25-17 and then posted a 25-20 win in set four to force the decisive set. Emporia State held leads of 9-5 and 11-7 in the fifth, but FHSU climbed back to tie the score at 13-13. The Tigers fought off one match point at 14-13, but the Hornets took the set 16-14 with back-to-back kills from Orianna Clements and Ainslee Stapp. The first set was a back-and-forth battle with 11 ties and four lead changes. The Tigers moved into the lead for good at 20-19 on a service ace by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6110">Morgan McIntire</a>.
