DETROIT (AP) — Miguel Cabrera hit his 507th home run, Detroit got nine innings from its bullpen and the Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 2-1 on Wednesday night for their fifth straight victory.

MJ Melendez led off the game with a home run for Kansas City, and Cabrera hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the inning. He has 1,845 RBIs, moving him past Carl Yastrzemski for 12th place on the career list.

“It was a good pitch to a really good hitter,” Royals starter Daniel Lynch said. “I don't get as upset about those, because I executed my pitch. One of the best to ever do this just got me.”

Scheduled Tigers starter Matt Manning was scratched just before game time because of arm fatigue. He doesn't expect to pitch again this season.

“I wanted to be precautionary,” Manning said. “With the position we're in, I was just looking more toward 2023 and not wanting to risk anything.”

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said preliminary tests didn't show any significant issues.

“They came back exactly as we expected,” he said. “A little bit of fatigue and a little bit of inflammation. He's going to get further evaluations, but the good news is we feel he'll be fine.”

Will Vest pitched the first inning, allowing Melendez's homer, and the next six relievers combined for eight shutout innings. Gregory Soto pitched the ninth for his 29th save.

Daniel Norris (1-0) was credited with the win after pitching two scoreless innings.

“It's tricky, because you expect to see one pitcher two or three times and then maybe a reliever or two,” Melendez said. “Instead, we were facing a different pitcher with different stuff almost every inning.”

The Tigers need one win in their last eight games to avoid 100 losses.

“It has been a frustrating season, because we have known all year that we were better than we were playing,” said Eric Haase, who scored on Cabrera's homer and caught all seven pitchers. “This is what we should have been doing all year.”

Kansas City had 10 hits and six walks, but Kyle Isbel was thrown out stealing twice and the Royals left 13 batters on base.

“When you face seven relievers, you figure you will run into one who doesn't have his best stuff,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “That didn't happen tonight. We had plenty of guys on base - I think we had a runner in every inning other than (the third and) the ninth - we just couldn't get the big hit we needed.

"We definitely left some money on the table.”

Lynch (4-12) allowed two runs on five hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out four.

“I thought his changeup really stood out tonight - he was able to use it in big situations - but his slider was good and he had a good fastball,” Matheny said.

The Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the third, but Cabrera bounced into a 6-4-3 double play.

Kansas City loaded the bases in the sixth and seventh innings, but Andrew Chafin came out of the bullpen to retire Melendez in the sixth, then got out of his own jam in the seventh by striking out Hunter Dozier and getting Drew Waters to ground out.

Because Manning was listed as the starting pitcher on A.J. Hinch's lineup card, he will be listed in the box score and credited with an appearance. However, because he didn't pitch to the first batter of the game, Vest gets credit for the first start of his 88-game major-league career.

In fact, Vest said he doesn't remember ever starting a game in his life, dating back to Little League.

Melendez's 18th homer moves him into sole possession of seventh place for a Royals rookie. He needs one more to tie Eric Hosmer (2011) for sixth and two to move into a tie for fourth with Mark Quinn (2000) and Bobby Witt Jr., who has 20 this season.

Harold Castro entered the game with three or more hits in his last three games, one short of the longest streak by a Tiger in the last 85 years. Castro entered the game in the ninth inning as a pinch runner, replacing Cabrera, but the game does not count against his streak since he didn't bat. Willie Horton had a four-game streak in 1965, as did Magglio Ordonez in 2008. Ty Cobb (1907) and Gee Walker (1936) hold the franchise record at five games.

The teams will decide their 19-game season series on Thursday. Eduardo Rodriguez (4-5, 4.37) is scheduled to start for the Tigers against Jonathan Heasley (4-8, 4.87).

That included a high of 3,575 at the NCAA Division II Central Region championship game, the second-best attended contest in all Division II last season. INDIANAPOLIS – Fort Hays State Men's Basketball ranked second in NCAA Division II for home attendance during the 2021-22 season. The Tigers averaged 2,000 fans per game at Gross Memorial Coliseum. A total of 32,000 fans attended 16 home games for the FHSU Men in 2021-22. Northern State (S.D.) led Division II in attendance, averaging 2,357 fans per game. Fort Hays State and Northern State were the only two schools to average at least 2,000 fans per game for the season. Northern State led Division II for the 14th&nbsp;consecutive year, going back to 2008. Official attendance figures were not recorded in 2020-21 due to COVID-19 restrictions on several venues. Fort Hays State helped the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association lead Division II as a conference in attendance for the 12th&nbsp;straight year. The Tigers led the MIAA in attendance for the fifth-straight year. The MIAA was the only Division II conference to average more than 1,000 fans per game (1,035). The MIAA had six schools in the Top 15 for attendance. KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State sophomore golfer&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7108">Maddux Mills</a>&nbsp;has been named the latest MIAA Men's Golf Athlete of the Week presented by T-Shotz, announced Wednesday by the league office. Mills placed third in a field of 100 golfers at this week's MSSU Men's Fall Invitational, held at Shangri-La Golf Club &amp; Resort in Monkey Island, Okla. The sophomore finished the three-round event with a cumulative score of 4-under 212, the lowest score amongst the 33 MIAA competitors in attendance. The Liberal, Kan. native tied for first in the field with 15 birdies across the 54 holes while leading the way in par-3 scoring at 3-under. He opened the tournament with a 1-over 73 in the first round before firing a 5-under 67 in Monday afternoon's round two thanks to six birdies on the card. Mills then circled seven birdies in the final round, including four in a five-hole stretch on the back nine. Mills is the first Tiger to earn MIAA weekly honors since Skyler Tebo did so in the spring of 2018. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are hopeful that Harrison Butker, their big-legged kicker whom they so sorely missed last week in Indianapolis, will be able to play when they face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

The Chiefs used journeyman Matt Ammendola the past two weeks in place of Butker, who sprained his plant ankle when he slipped on the shoddy turf in Arizona in Week 1.

But after a solid job in a win over the Chargers, Ammendola missed an early extra point in Indianapolis and then a chip-shot field goal that would have extended the Kansas City lead to seven.

Instead, the Colts seized the momentum and marched downfield for the go-ahead touchdown in the closing seconds, and the margin in the 20-17 loss for Kansas City wound up being that missed field goal with 8:41 left to play.

“Harrison will go ahead and do a little bit today,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Wednesday, “and we'll just play it by ear.”

The Chiefs are still hedging their bets, though. They waived Ammendola, who had won a five-way kicking competition to be the fill-in guy, and signed former Jaguars kicker Matthew Wright to the practice squad.

He would be promoted to the active roster if Butker remains unavailable.

Wright appeared in three games for Pittsburgh two years ago and 14 games for Jacksonville, where he connected on 21 of 24 field goals and 13 of 15 extra points. The former Central Florida standout's career long is 56 yards.

“I don't know (about Wright) other than his workout out here. I haven't been in a game with him,” Reid said. “He had a good workout yesterday and you would hope that transfers in. He does have some experience.”

Just not the same level as Butker, who has emerged alongside Baltimore's Justin Tucker as one of the NFL's best kickers.

He has converted 94% of his extra points and 90% of his field-goal tries during five-plus seasons, including a 54-yarder made while nursing a sore ankle against the Cardinals.

And Butker might have the strongest leg in the league, with 21 makes over 50 yards and a career-best of 58 yards, which gives Kansas City a chance to score any time it crosses midfield.

One thing that could factor into the decision to play him: the location of the game.

As of Wednesday, the Chiefs were still due to play Sunday night on the natural grass surface at Tampa Bay, which was getting dumped on courtesy of Hurricane Ian and could be somewhat compromised.

If the NFL decides to move the game, it would be played on the artificial surface inside U.S. Bank Stadium in Minnesota.

“We're not sure where we're going to play,” Reid said, “but wherever we need to go, we'll go. We'll get ourselves ready for that. When the league announces it, we'll move forward in that direction. But right now we know nothing.

"And listen, my heart goes out to the people of Tampa. I haven't quite followed it and know how much it's hit or will hit, but from what I've heard it could be a big one. My heart goes out to them.”

NOTES: The Chiefs activated CB Nazeeh Johnson from the practice squad Wednesday. They also signed LB Elijah Lee, who was waived the previous day, to replace him on the practice squad. ... DETROIT (AP) — Harold Castro singled in the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning after tying it with a two-run single in the eighth in the Detroit Tigers' 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

Tucker Barnhart bunted pinch-runner Ryan Kreidler to third and Anthony Misiewicz (3-2) intentionally walked pinch-hitter Eric Haase.

Riley Greene struck out, and the Royals decided to walk Javy Báez to pitch to Castro with the bases loaded. He hit a soft grounder up the middle to win it.

“We were getting in the shower as soon as they walked Javy,” Spencer Torkelson said. “It was like, ‘All right, we’re getting to Hittin' Harold.' We have all the confidence in the world."

Baez has struck out 143 times this year, including in a key situation in the eighth, but Royals manager Mike Matheny said he never considered pitching to him with the left-handed Misiewicz on the mound.

“We were going to make their lefties beat us,” he said. “Baez is a right-handed hitter who hits lefties really well. Anthony made a good pitch — (catcher Salvador Perez) was going down to block hit, but (Castro) got a piece of it.”

Castro also helped with his glove. In the top of the 10th, Bobby Witt Jr. led off with a bouncer down the third-base line. Castro made a diving stop and, while he didn't have a play on Witt, was able to hold automatic runner MJ Melendez at second.

Alex Lange (6-4) retired Salvador Perez before getting Vinnie Pasquatino to bounce into an inning-ending double play.

The Tigers trailed 3-0 after seven innings against Zack Greinke, then tied it against Dylan Coleman in the eighth.

Torkelson started the inning with a walk, then beat third baseman Nate Eaton's throw to second on a groundball. After Tucker Barnhart lined out, Akil Baddoo's bunt single loaded the bases. Riley Greene grounded softly to Eaton, but his throw home pulled Salvador Perez off the bag.

Báez struck out, but Castro lined a 2-2 pitch to left for a tying single. Carlos Hernández came in to retire Miguel Cabrera to keep it tied.

“If you want a single, Harold is the guy you want up there,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “He does an incredible job of getting a piece of the ball and getting it onto the outfield grass. (Torkelson) made a couple nice baserunning plays in that inning and Akil got down that bunt on his own."

“Zack pitched a vintage Zack game today,” Matheny said. “I don't even look at the velocity when he's pitching — it is all about pitch shape for him. I just watch how the hitters are reacting to him.”

Tigers starter Joey Wentz allowed three runs in five innings.

The Royals took a 2-0 lead in the second on Dozier's home run — his 10th in 32 career games at Comerica Park and extended the margin to 3-0 on Nate Eaton's RBI triple in the fourth.

“I have no idea why I hit so well here,” said Dozier, who has only homered once against the Tigers at home. “I like this park - it's a fun place to play - so maybe I see the ball better here. I don't really know.”

Kansas City could have given Greinke a bigger lead. After stranding runners in scoring position in the first two innings, Edward Oliveres hit a two-out double that would have easily scored Vinnie Pasquatino from first, but the ball hopped over the fence for a ground-rule double and Dozier struck out.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State moved to No. 24 in the latest edition of the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll, released on Tuesday. The Tigers have been among the Top 25 in three of the four regular season polls and the preseason poll this year.

Even though they won each of their matches this past week, the Tigers slipped down a couple of notches in the poll to No. 24. They held the No. 22 ranking last week. FHSU is 5-2-3 overall for the season.

Fort Hays State and Northeastern State are the only two teams from the GAC/MIAA inside the Top 25. Northeastern State holds the No. 16 ranking in the latest poll. The RiverHawks are 4-1-2 overall on the season. The teams are set to meet for the first time this week in Hays on Saturday. But first, the Tigers face Southern Nazarene on Thursday in Bethany, Okla.

The Tigers have been among the Top 25 in three of the four regular season polls and the preseason poll this year.Even though they won each of their matches this past week, the Tigers slipped down a couple of notches in the poll to No. 24. They held the No. 22 ranking last week. FHSU is 5-2-3 overall for the season.Fort Hays State and Northeastern State are the only two teams from the GAC/MIAA inside the Top 25. Northeastern State holds the No. 16 ranking in the latest poll. The RiverHawks are 4-1-2 overall on the season. The teams are set to meet for the first time this week in Hays on Saturday. Arndt was named Offensive Player of the Week, while Iwasaki was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week. The Tigers won 4-0 over Ouachita Baptist and 5-1 over Harding last week in Hays. Arndt scored three goals for the week, generating six points. He had the first goal of four in a shutout of Ouachita Baptist, giving him the game-winning goal. He then scored twice against Harding, providing the first goal of the match on a rebound off the post and the fourth on a penalty kick. Arndt had eight shots for the week and place five on goal. Arndt leads the team in goals this season with five. Iwasaki played all 90 minutes of both contests last week, helping the Tigers limit the opposition to 0.5 goals per match. The Tigers also held their opponents to an average of just six shots per match. Iwasaki also notched his second goal of the season in the 4-0 win over Ouachita Baptist. He took four shots for the week and placed three on goal. Arndt and Iwasaki join Declan Viljoen of Rogers State (Goalkeeper of the Week) as the weekly honorees from the GAC office.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Tigers placed 10th as a team at 44-over 908 across three rounds, finishing just two shots back of a tie for seventh out of 19 programs in attendance. Mills finished the week at 4-under 212 following rounds of 1-over 73, 5-under 67 and even-par 72. He led the field with 15 birdies across the 54 holes while also leading the way in par-3 scoring at 3-under for the week. With five short holes on the course, the Liberal native circled a two six out of 15 times. Monday's second-round score of 67 is the lowest score on record for a Tiger in at least 11 years. The NFL has eliminated its 
full-contact all-star game and is replacing it with weeklong skills 
competitions and a flag football game.

The new event will be 
renamed “The Pro Bowl Games” and will feature AFC and NFC players 
showcasing their football and non-football skills in challenges over 
several days.

The 2023 Games will be held in Las Vegas, and the 
flag football game at Allegiant Stadium is Sunday, Feb. 5. That is one

and promote the event’s content throughout the week. Manning, a 14-time 
Pro Bowl pick during his Hall of Fame career, will provide his 
perspective and will also be a part of the coaching staff for flag game.

“The
 Pro Bowl is something that we’ve been looking at for a while, really 
continuing to evolve,” NFL executive Peter O’Reilly told The Associated 
Press. “Coming out of last year’s game, we really made the decision 
based on a lot of internal conversations, getting feedback from GMs and 
coaches, getting a lot of feedback from players. We think there’s a real
 opportunity to do something wholly different here and move away from 
the traditional tackle football game. We decided the goal is to 
celebrate 88 of the biggest stars in the NFL in a really positive, fun, 
yet competitive way.

“The feedback very directly from guys who had
 been in the Pro Bowl recently was to keep the construct of the week, 
make sure you’re having that multi-day element. It was overwhelmingly 
positive both from players as well as from clubs.”

The Pro Bowl 
debuted in January 1951 in Los Angeles and stayed there for 21 seasons 
before the game moved to different cities from 1972-80.

Hawaii 
hosted from 1980-2009, and the game has had several homes in the years 
since, including Miami, Phoenix, Orlando and Las Vegas.

“The game 
was kind of silly, I guess," Saints two-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman 
Ryan Ramczyk said. "Guys weren’t out there playing true football. 
Hopefully, there’ll be a lot of interactions with the fans and guys will
 get their opportunity to go out there and show some skills. I could see
 that being a good change.”

Quality of play in the Pro Bowl has 
often been criticized. Players, understandably concerned about getting 
hurt, treat it as an exhibition more than competition. A flag football 
game could increase competition while avoiding potential injuries 
resulting from tackling, blocking and hitting.

“You definitely 
don’t want to get hurt," Ingram said. "It’s an all-star game, 
essentially, and you want to put on a good product for the fans and for 
yourself but at the same time, the season is over for you, essentially. 
You don’t want to be going into an offseason or into a contract year and
 getting hurt in a Pro Bowl game.”

The NFL has a major interest in
 flag football. The league partnered with the International Federation 
of American Football to bring flag football to The World Games in July 
with an eye on the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

“You tap into all
 the stuff that feels great about Pro Bowl week, the skills, the helmets
 off, the engagement and then culminate that, keeping the AFC-NFC 
construct, in something that’s really important, which is flag football 
and that opportunity to have the best athletes in the NFL out there 
playing this game that is so much about the future of our sport,” said 
O’Reilly, the league’s executive vice president, club business and 
league events. “It’s been an evolution, but coming out of Las Vegas last
 year, we really focused on how do we reinvent and celebrate our 
all-stars even better.”

Manning has always been an advocate for the Pro Bowl and supported it when the league considered drastic changes a decade ago.

“The
 Pro Bowl has always been a time to step back and celebrate the game of 
football with teammates, fans and family,” Manning told the AP. “I’m 
thankful I can continue to be part of the week as all of us at Omaha 
Productions work with the NFL to reimagine The Pro Bowl Games. Making 
Sunday’s game a flag football game is great to see. Youth football has 
been extremely important to me, and knowing NFL FLAG will help grow this
 sport, I hope boys and girls can see themselves playing the same game 
as the best players in the world.”

Fan voting will still help 
determine the AFC and NFC team rosters. Tom Brady has the most 
invitations to the Pro Bowl with 15. Four players got 14 invites, 
including Manning. The East-West Shrine Bowl will be held at Allegiant 
Stadium on Thursday, Feb. 2.

⛳ FHSU's Brasser leads, Tigers women ninth after day one of home tournament

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Broncos went three-and-out nine times against the San Francisco 49ers, the most in Russell Wilson's 11-year career. And only once did they get anywhere near the end zone.

“In the fourth quarter, when it mattered most, we clicked,” Wilson said after leading the lone long touchdown drive that powered the Broncos past the 49ers&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/san-francisco-49ers-denver-broncos-nfl-sports-79f193332a3ed76c68d90760f2a439f3">11-10</a>&nbsp;Sunday night.

Wilson has gotten off to a slow start with his new team as he tries to mesh his style that embraces off-schedule plays when defenses break down with the philosophies of rookie head coach Nathaniel Hackett, whose version of the West Coast offense is predicated on quick throws.

Wilson has just three touchdown passes in three games and he has rushed for just 22 yards.

But he has engineered back-to-back fourth-quarter comebacks over Houston and San Francisco, and the Broncos are tied atop the AFC West with Kansas City at 2-1 after the Chiefs, Chargers and Raiders all lost Sunday.

Midway through the fourth quarter Sunday night, Wilson finally looked like the quarterback who signed a $245 million extension before he'd even taken a single snap for the Broncos.

On third-and-10 from his own 33, Wilson bought time in the pocket by spinning to his left and launching a 27-yard pass on the run to Kendall Hinton at the San Francisco 40.

“I guess I can still go left,” Wilson said in a potshot at his former coach in Seattle, Pete Carroll, who gloated after the Seahawks' 17-16 win over Denver in Week 1 that he schemed to get Wilson moving to his left.

Three plays later, on third-and-6, Wilson found his receivers covered, stepped up and darted through the line for a 12-yard gain — by far his longest run of 2022.

“Really in the fourth quarter, I had to kind of use my legs and take over,” Wilson said. “Just try to move around and find some first downs.”

One play after that, he audibled out of a run call and hit Courtland Sutton in 1-on-1 coverage at the 5-yard line, and Melvin Gordon took it in from the 1 two plays later to put Denver ahead for the first time.

“That was pretty huge how he walked into the end zone there,” Wilson said after the Broncos' first red zone touchdown in seven tries this season.

Wilson's 2-point conversion pass was batted down, leaving the Broncos vulnerable to a game-winning field goal attempt. Robbie Gould never got that opportunity because Denver's stingy defense recorded two more takeaways: Jonas Griffith's interception of Jimmy Garoppolo's pass and Kareem Jackson's recovery of running back Jeff Wilson Jr.'s fumble.

“This atmosphere felt like a playoff atmosphere,” Wilson said. "That’s what we need. It means a lot to us as players to obviously go against a great team like that. We’re still all learning each other — it’s a whole new system. Everyone is coming together but there’s so much greatness in store. I can’t wait for it.

“Just watching out defense battle, battle, battle against a really good offense and then giving us a chance. And everybody just believes in each other. That’s what football is all about.”

Denver's defense, which is allowing just 12 points a game.

“I don’t want to get too brash in saying this," suggested Chubb, "but we’re the best in the (expletive) league.”

Denver's offense. It's still sputtering and the Broncos are going to need to average more than 14.3 points a game if they have a realistic chance of keeping up with Patrick Mahomes in the AFC West.

Broncos defensive coordinator Ejoro Evero. At this rate, Hackett will lose him to a head coaching opportunity sooner than anyone might have imagined. ... Punter Corliss Waitman averaged nearly 48 yards on 10 punts and six times buried the 49ers inside their 20-yard line.

Albert Okwuegbunam's 12-yard catch was the only one by Denver's tight ends (who were only targeted three times).

OLB Baron Browning (knee) will miss some time. ... RT Billy Turner still hasn't been active for his comeback from offseason knee surgery.

5 — The number of penalties on Denver, for 30 yards, after the Broncos were whistled for a league-high 25 infractions through the first two weeks.

The Broncos visit the winless Raiders (0-3) and if Hackett wants to quiet the boo-birds he cannot hand Josh McDaniels his first win as a head coach since Nov. 24, 2010, when his brief stay in Denver was quickly winding down.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the NFL on Monday were discussing contingency plans for practice, as well as the possible relocation of next weekend’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs in the event Hurricane Ian makes landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

“Right now we’re still monitoring things, but we’re working things out with the league and we should have a decision hopefully later (Monday) about what we’re going to do,” coach Todd Bowles said.

Tuesday is a regular day off for players. The team reconvenes Wednesday for the start of preparation for Sunday night’s game against the Chiefs.

Bowles said one of the things under discussion was the prospect of practicing in another city if the storm makes landfall near the Tampa Bay area.

Asked if there was talk of Sunday night’s game being moved, too, Bowles responded: “Possibly, if it gets to that.”

Meanwhile, the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning postponed preseason games scheduled to be played at home Wednesday against Carolina and Thursday vs. Nashville.
