KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jonathan Heasley pitched six innings of two-hit ball, Edward Oliveras and Drew Waters homered, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 4-1 on Thursday to complete their three-game series sweep.

Salvador Perez also drove in a run for Kansas City, extending his streak to seven straight games with an RBI, and Brad Keller finished off three innings of no-hit ball by the bullpen for his first career save.

“Much better version of baseball,” said Royals manager Mike Matheny, who celebrated his 52nd birthday in fine fashion Thursday. “The aim is always to win, but you put a couple of wins together against a team that you haven't had success against and you see the confidence starting to swell.”

The first home sweep of at least three games by the Royals since July 2021 also probably ended the fading playoff hopes of the Twins, who two weeks ago were in the midst of an AL Central race but lost eight of nine on their road trip.

“I mean, to be very frank about it, disappointing and about as low on the scale as you can imagine,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “The baserunners just weren’t there for us. The opportunities weren’t there.”

Minnesota rookie Josh Winder (4-5) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings. Caleb Hamilton drove in the only run for the Twins, who limp home to wrap up the season having lost 17 of their last 20 road games.

“You have to continue to play the same way. You have to continue to fight the same way,” Baldelli said.

Heasley (4-8) also was dominant in his previous start in Boston, allowing two hits over 6 2/3 shutout innings, and the 25-year-old picked up where he left off against Minnesota. Heasley retired his first 10 batters, striking out four of the first five, and followed a base hit by Carlos Correa by retiring the next two to end the inning.

“I thought he really built off what he did the last time,” Matheny said. “I do believe that he's found something.”

Correa thought he had given the Twins the lead in the first, when he drove a pitch into the right-field seats. But umpire Manny Gonzalez ruled that the ball skirted the pole foul and there was not enough evidence to overrule his call.

The Royals took the lead in the third when Bobby Witt Jr. singled, stole second and scored on Perez's shattered-bat single, then made it 2-0 in the fourth when Oliveras drove a 3-2 pitch into the left-field seats.

Waters added his no-doubt shot leading off the fifth, and Nate Eaton drove in an insurance run in the eighth.

MJ Melendez, who homered in each of the previous two games, nearly joined the Royals' home run party twice. He drove a pitch to the center-field warning track leading off the game and another to the wall in right in the third.

“He was so baffled both times,” Matheny said. “He was certain, as we all were, that both of those balls were gone.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — It was altogether fitting that on the day the Kansas City Royals fired Dayton Moore, they beat the fast-fading Minnesota Twins using the same blueprint that their longtime front office executive once used to build them into a winner.

Some timely hits, stellar defense in spacious Kauffman Stadium and a shutdown effort by the bullpen.

MJ Melendez homered for the second straight day, but otherwise the Royals had to scratch out just enough runs to support their relief corps, which pieced together five innings of two-hit ball in their 5-2 victory on Wednesday night.

"You'll always have stuff that comes up and today was one of those days, and the conversations we had — you still have to play," Royals manager Mike Matheny said. "Play the game really well in a way everybody would be proud of."

Salvador Perez, one of Moore's most successful signings, had three hits while driving in a run for the sixth straight game, and Bobby Witt Jr. and Edward Olivares also drove in runs to give the Kansas City bullpen some breathing room.

Anthony Misiewicz (1-1) and three other relievers dazzled in support of Daniel Lynch, while Scott Barlow pitched around an error in the ninth for his second save in two nights and 23rd on the year.

It was the kind of job the Royals once saw out of relievers Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland, when the teams Moore put together were winning back-to-back American League pennants and the 2015 World Series title.

"It was just a really impressive job by the bullpen to shut things down," Matheny said. "Good effort all the way around."

Bailey Ober (1-3) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings for Minnesota, which was in an AL Central race two weeks ago but has lost six of seven to begin an eight-game trip that's dashed its playoff hopes.

"The runs are tough to come by right now and you just have to come up with a way," Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. "We might have one guy that comes out and has a good night, but we need more than that."

The Royals opened the game the same way they finished the previous night: with production at the top of the order.

Melendez, who hit a two-run homer in the series opener, homered leading off the game for the third time this season, driving a 3-1 pitch an estimated 437 feet to center field. And after Witt reached on a base hit, Perez blooped an RBI double to right that was sneakily reminiscent of his two-out, go-ahead double on Tuesday night.

Minnesota got one back in the second on Matt Wallner's base hit, and when the Royals answered on Olivares' two-out single in the third, the Twins again closed within a run thanks in part to a two-bag error by Vinnie Pasquantino.

That was it for the Twins, though, because the Kansas City bullpen was downright dominant.

Collin Snider worked around a two-on, no-out jam in the fifth. Misiewicz retired four of the five he faced in the sixth and seventh. Dylan Coleman handled the rest of the seventh and the first two outs of the eighth. And Amir Garrett finished that one off before Barlow wrapped up the Twins' 13th loss in their last 16 games.

"We have some guys that have had to battle through some tired arms," Matheny said. "We're trying to put them in position where they can pick each other up and they're doing a good job of it."

KANSAS
CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Royals
chairman and CEO John Sherman today announced the departure of Dayton Moore, the organization’s President of Baseball Operations and leader
of that department since 2006.

Sherman
also announced that J.J. Picollo
has been named Executive Vice
President and General Manager overseeing baseball operations, effective
immediately.

Moore
was General Manager as the Royals won the 2014 American League pennant and the
2015 World Series. Under his leadership, the Royals’ record improved over seven
consecutive years from 2009 to 2015, matching a Major League Baseball record.

“Dayton’s
16 years of leadership here will always mark the transformation into a World
Championship club,” Sherman said. “Our fans, our region, and our community will
never forget the excitement we shared in back-to-back pennants and the World
Series Championship in 2015. He always put the Kansas City Royals first, and
we’re stronger today because of it.”

Picollo
became the seventh General Manager in Royals history last September, receiving
the title of Senior Vice President-Baseball Operations/General Manager. He
previously held the title of Vice President/Assistant General Manager, Player
Personnel from 2015-21, and served as the Royals’ Assistant General
Manager-Scouting &amp; Player development from 2008-2015. Picollo joined Kansas
City’s Baseball Operations Department in 2006 as Director of Player Development
on Aug.13, 2006.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Former Hays High standout Tradgon McCrae has been named the MIAA Golfer of the Week. The Missouri Southern State senior defeated all MIAA opponents with a 13-under par performance over 54 holes to
took home the individual championship at the 24th annual NSU Fall Classic
hosted by Northeastern State at the Muskogee Country Club. 

His
three-round total of 200 (64, 66, 70) is the lowest 54-hole score in MSSU
program history. McCrae had four birdies over the final 18 holes to hold onto
the individual title, winning by one stroke for his first-ever solo
championship. Overall, McCrae lead the field with a total 17 birdies over the
three rounds.&nbsp;

This is the second time this season that McCrae has been named the MIAA Golfer of Week.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs and Chargers were locked in a tie game early in the fourth quarter last Thursday, and Kansas City was facing fourth-and-goal with an opportunity to take its first lead of the game.

Rather than go for it, Chiefs coach Andy Reid sent in his field-goal unit.

Everything worked out in the end: The Chiefs took the lead on the chip-shot by fill-in kicker Matt Ammendola, rookie cornerback Jaylen Watson returned an interception 99 yards for a touchdown on the ensuing drive, and Kansas City held on for a 27-24 victory in an important early season AFC West showdown.

Yet the conservative decision on the goal line left some head scratching inside Arrowhead Stadium, unless you consider what had transpired in the first three quarters.

One of the league's prolific offenses, led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, had faced third-and-short situations five times and converted just once.

“We can do better in that area,” Reid acknowledged ahead of a visit to Indianapolis on Sunday.

The Chiefs spent plenty of time working on short-yardage scenarios during training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, and they dedicate time during practice each Thursday to them.

So it's not as if Reid, whose penchant for throwing the ball all over the field is well known, has neglected a situation that seemingly demands old-school, smash-mouth football.

Perhaps it's an attitude thing. Or poor play calls. Or the defense simply got 'em on those plays.

“You try to see what went wrong, first of all,” Reid said, “whether it's the call — whether I sent in the wrong thing at the wrong time — or there's a mistake somewhere. We had a couple of mistakes in there. And then one of them where we didn't have a mistake, the defense still had pretty good leverage on it.”

The only third-and-short the Chiefs converted last Sunday was their first, and they did it in the most blasé way possible, running 5-foot-11, 242-pound fullback Michael Burton up the middle for a first down.

It's when the Chiefs got a little more exotic that things went haywire.

Isiah Pacheco was stopped on the next opportunity. Mahomes threw an incompletion on the next. And then Mahomes threw an underneath shovel-pass to Travis Kelce on third-and-goal — the play Reid referred to that was executed correctly but still failed, leading to the go-ahead field goal on fourth-and-goal.

Why not just run a tried-and-true sneak for those first downs?

That goes back to 2019 and a game in Denver, when Mahomes dislocated his knee cap plowing into the pile. Reid has been shooting down his quarterback whenever Mahomes asks to sneak the ball ever since.

“The hardest I've ever lobbied for it was the playoffs: We're here now, I want that first down,'' Mahomes said. ”I've only technically not got (the conversion) one time, and I still think I was in the end zone against the Chargers a couple of years back. I'm still pretty good at the quarterback sneak. I'll keep that on his radar."

What makes the Chiefs' failures on third-and-short even more vexing is the fact that they averaged nearly 8 yards per play on first down. Some of that was inflated by a 52-yard run by Clyde Edwards-Helaire late in the game, but removing that big play, the Chiefs still averaged about 5.3 yards on every first-down snap.

Yet the Chiefs couldn't get a yard or two when it would have kept a drive alive.

In fact, they were so woeful on third-and-short Sunday that they would have been better off in third-and-long: Whereas they were 1 for 5 in those situations, they were 4 for 8 when they needed to gain at least 4 yards.

That's more in line with how the Chiefs traditionally fare on third down. They were far-and-away the best in the league last year, converting at a 53.1% clip, and are still in the top 10 this season at 45% despite their short-yardage woes.

“Coach Reid has a great track record of getting first downs in short-yardage situations,” Mahomes said. “We didn't have a great week in a short week, little misses here and there. And I think as we get back into a more normal flow of the season, we’ll get back to being great at those short-yardage situations.”

🏈 Third-and-ugh: Chiefs vow to fix short-yardage woes in Indy

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — MJ Melendez hit a two-run homer, Salvador Perez drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out double in the seventh inning, and the Kansas City Royals held off the rapidly fading Minnesota Twins 5-4 on Tuesday night to open their final homestand of the season.

Dylan Coleman (5-2) pitched a scoreless seventh for the Royals, then Scott Barlow cleaned up Jose Cuas' mess by striking out Mark Contreras to strand runners on second and third in the eighth, before handling the ninth for his 22nd save.

“It was a tough game,” said Twins manager Rocco Baldelli, whose club has dropped five of six to begin an eight-game trip, including four of five to AL Central-leading Cleveland. “Things didn't go the way we would have liked.”

The Royals trailed 3-0 in the second, pulled ahead in the fifth and were still tied 4-all when Melendez doubled off Twins reliever Michael Fulmer (5-6) in the seventh. Bobby Witt Jr. followed with a double, then took third when Melendez tried to score and was thrown out by Twins left fielder Jake Cave on a bang-bang play at the plate.

Perez came through on the very next pitch, though, dumping the go-ahead double down the right-field line.

“He just swells in those situations,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “You need that guy who says, ‘OK, I’m going to take care of this.'"

Kansas City, which was swept in three games at Target Field last week, had lost 12 of its last 14 to the Twins.

The Twins appeared to be continuing their mastery of the Royals this season, too, when they jumped ahead 3-0 in the second on Matt Wallner's run-scoring double and a two-run single by Carlos Correa.

They nearly pushed another run across in the third, too, but Royals starter Zack Greinke struck out Gio Urshela and Cave, ending the threat while picking up his 1,000th strikeout in a Kansas City uniform.

“Just an incredible accomplishment,” Matheny said.

Melendez's two-out homer in the third got Kansas City within 3-2, then Hunter Dozier's shot leading off the fifth tied the game and ended a streak of 115 at-bats without a home run. Witt added a go-ahead RBI single later in the inning.

Cave answered for the Twins off reliever Amir Garrett to tie the game 4-all in the sixth.

Greinke allowed four runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings for Kansas City. Twins counterpart Dylan Bundy allowed four runs on four hits and a walk in 4 2/3 innings.

“Just poor execution with a couple of pitches,” Bundy said. “I've got to work deeper into games and I haven't done that.”

Correa was thrown out at second base in the seventh inning, and the tag hit his lower right leg and left the Twins shortstop laying on the ground. He said afterward that “it just felt numb,” but Correa felt good enough to finish out the game.

Twins RHP Sonny Gray went on the injured list with a strained right hamstring that occurred during a start Sept. 2 against the White Sox. He threw just 44 pitches before a recurrence of the hamstring issues that he had in April.

“I don’t see him pitching if we’re not in it,” Baldelli said, ”but he’s going to stay mentally ready.”

RHP Trevor Megill was reinstated from the COVID-19 list and RHP Dereck Rodriguez was outrighted off the 40-man roster.

Royals RHP Taylor Clarke (oblique strain) threw about 15 pitches in a live session Tuesday. He's scheduled to throw again on Friday in the hopes of rejoining the club before the season ends.

Twins RHP Bailey Ober (1-2, 3.49 ERA) starts Wednesday night against Royals LHP Daniel Lynch (4-11, 5.15).

⚾ Melendez, Perez lead Royals to comeback win over Twins

MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Fort Hays State Men's Golf participated in its first MIAA designated event of the 2022-23 season at the NSU Golf Classic, held at Muskogee Golf Club. The course was a par-71 layout and played at 6,726 yards. The Tigers were seventh among MIAA teams competing in the tournament, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7103">Tanner Copeland</a>&nbsp;tied for 10th&nbsp;among MIAA golfers. The tournament hosted schools from the MIAA, GAC, and NSIC to help with regional head-to-head competition. FHSU finished 13th&nbsp;overall among 18 teams competing in the tournament. The golfers battled brutal elements with temperatures clipping 100 degrees each day. The first day of competition was 36 holes. Henderson State, members of the GAC, won the team title by 19 strokes with an 837 total, an astounding 15-under par as a team over three rounds. Washburn was second and topped the MIAA field with a total of 856, just four-over par. Missouri Southern and Northeastern State finished behind Washburn to round out the top three MIAA teams. Fort Hays State shot 29-over par as a team. They shot a strong 4-over par as a team in the opening round with a 288. They followed with 300 and then 293 in the final round on Tuesday. The 288 was the lowest total in a round for the Tigers since the 2018-19 season when they shot 286 at the Bethel Spring Invitational in Hesston, Kansas at the Hesston Golf Course. By finishing in a tie for 10th&nbsp;among MIAA competitors (+4, 217),&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7103">Tanner Copeland</a>&nbsp;generated MIAA ranking points for the conference designated events this season. The Top 15 in MIAA events receive points toward those rankings. Copeland had nine birdies over his three rounds. He shot an opening-round 1-under par 70 with three birdies, two bogeys, and 13 pars. He posted a five-over 76 in the second round, then came back on Tuesday to fire a final-round even par 71 with four birdies, two bogeys, and one double bogey. Copeland was 1-under par on the back nine of the course over the three rounds, and he shot at least even in five of his six nine-hole segments of the tournament. The course was a par-71 layout and played at 6,726 yards. The Tigers were seventh among MIAA teams competing in the tournament, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7103">Tanner Copeland</a>&nbsp;tied for 10th&nbsp;among MIAA golfers. The tournament hosted schools from the MIAA, GAC, and NSIC to help with regional head-to-head competition. FHSU finished 13th&nbsp;overall among 18 teams competing in the tournament. The golfers battled brutal elements with temperatures clipping 100 degrees each day. The first day of competition was 36 holes. Henderson State, members of the GAC, won the team title by 19 strokes with an 837 total, an astounding 15-under par as a team over three rounds. Washburn was second and topped the MIAA field with a total of 856, just four-over par. Missouri Southern and Northeastern State finished behind Washburn to round out the top three MIAA teams. Fort Hays State shot 29-over par as a team. They shot a strong 4-over par as a team in the opening round with a 288. They followed with 300 and then 293 in the final round on Tuesday. The 288 was the lowest total in a round for the Tigers since the 2018-19 season when they shot 286 at the Bethel Spring Invitational in Hesston, Kansas at the Hesston Golf Course. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas has managed to forge an identity for itself through its first three games — all wins, surprisingly enough — as an offensive-minded team capable of putting up big points without necessarily throwing the ball all over the yard.

Kansas State has embraced the image of a physical, defense-first team that can barely score.

The rest of the Big 12 is also trying to find its identity as six teams play their first league games Saturday — Iowa State with the eighth-ranked defense in the nation, TCU with the ninth-ranked offense or top-10 teams Oklahoma and Oklahoma State that have been brilliant on offense and shown some defensive chops as well.

"Tough. Resilient. Edgy. Hungry. Never satisfied. I think those would be the best," said first-year Sooners coach Brett Venables, when asked to describe his team. "I love the way we are developing. Our leadership and our mindset. These guys are super hungry, and they want you to coach them hard. When I say they are literally sitting on the edge of their seats in every meeting, I can't say it any more clearly and truthful. And when we go to practice it is the same thing."

Venables, a longtime defensive guru who arrived from Clemson added: "We are still have a long way to go, but we are making steady improvement"

The biggest surprise in the Big 12 through the nonconference portion of the season is undoubtedly the Jayhawks, and it's not only because they're 3-0 for the first time in more than a decade. They've been dynamic on offense behind Jalon Daniels, who may be the impressive quarterback in the league so far.

The league's offensive player of the week following another big performance in a win at Houston, Daniels is doing what would get a player on a national title contender in the Heisman Trophy conversation. He accounted for 281 yards and five touchdowns in the 48-30 win over the Cougars, pushing his TD total to 10 through the first three games.

He is both the Jayhawks' leading rusher with 244 yards and passer with 566 yards.

"We have a lot of people who are able to make plays with the ball in their hands in our offense," said Daniels, who was fighting for playing time a year ago but seized the starting job in fall camp. "I feel like (coordinator Andy Kotelnicki) realizes that, so I feel like he does a great job of being able to put guys in situations to be able to get the ball."

It's not as if the Jayhawks have beaten up on soft competition to reach this point: They're sitting atop the Big 12 by virtue of their overtime win at West Virginia and knocking down future conference foe Houston, which was expected to be a Top 25 contender.

"It's nice to see that our early start's being recognized," said Kansas coach Lance Leipold, whose team plays another 3-0 opponent in Duke on Saturday. "But shortly after that happens, you have to just keep your head down and focus on what you've got to get done and get better at."

There's plenty for the Jayhawks' rivals along Interstate 70 to get better at on offense.

On defense? Kansas State has been nearly dominant.

The Wildcats have yet to allow more than 17 points to any of their first three opponents, pitched one of the few shutouts in the opening weekend of college football and are allowing just 276 yards per game.

But not even that wrecking-crew identity was enough to save Kansas State against Tulane last weekend. Adrian Martinez once again struggled at quarterback and offensive coordinator Collin Klein made plenty of head-scratching calls, resulting in a 17-10 home loss that left the Wildcats feeling wounded heading to Oklahoma on Saturday.

Turns out establishing an identity doesn't mean much if you don't win.

"Adversity has struck and how are we going to respond to that adversity — all of us, players, coaches — because we knew it was going to be a tough game," Wildcats coach Chris Klieman said. "We knew that they were a good football team and we knew we had to play really well to beat these guys. We played hard but we did not execute well."

Iowa State, another defensive-minded team allowing 24.3 yards per game, has scratched together enough offense for a 3-0 start heading into its game against No. 17 Baylor on Saturday. And TCU has been stunningly efficient through two contests under coach Sonny Dykes, piling up 521.5 yards per game on offense heading into its trip to SMU this weekend.

"We're showing up ready to rock and roll," said Cyclones coach Matt Campbell. "I feel from a physicality standpoint, from an attitude and effort standpoint, things that we have set as our corner stones of who we want to be. I like where we are at."

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Tennis moved to 2-2 on the season with a 7-0 win over Sterling College on Tuesday at the FHSU Tennis Courts. It was the home opener of the 2022-23 season for the Tigers. The Tigers picked up the first point of the match by sweeping doubles play. KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6693">Isabel Robben</a>&nbsp;was tabbed the MIAA Women's Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week on Tuesday for her efforts this past week in contests against Washburn and Emporia State. Robben picked up her fifth shutout win of the season in a 1-0 non-conference win over Washburn in Hays. She made six saves in that contest for her fifth shutout of the season as the Tigers knocked off the previously unbeaten Ichabods. She then made a career-high eight saves in a 2-2 match with Emporia State to open MIAA play. For the week, Robben had 14 saves and an .875 save percentage. Robben joins Julia Kristensen of Central Missouri (Offensive Player of the Week) and Lindsey Edmonds of Central Missouri (Defensive Player of the Week) as the weekly honorees from the conference office.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Evyn Cox shot an 15-over-par 86 and finished fifth. Katie Dinkel
placed sixth with an 87 and Jaycee Oakley was eighth also with an 87.
