PHOENIX (AP) — Pavin Smith and pinch-hitter Jordan Luplow homered in a five-run sixth inning as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Kansas City Royals 8-6 on Tuesday night.

Arizona hit four homers and won for the fifth time in six games. The Diamondbacks lead the National League with 60 homers.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo doesn't want his team to be considered a homer-heavy club.

“I don’t want to say that’s who we are," Lovullo said. "I don’t want us to be known as a home run-hitting team. I want us to be known as good hitters who hit home runs because we are balanced and through the baseball. Our mindset is hard line drives in the middle of the diamond, 90 miles an hour or greater, and good things will take off from there.”

Daulton Varsho and David Peralta also homered for the Diamondbacks, who have 15 homers in their last six games, including seven in a 10-6 victory against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field last Friday. They have 11 comeback victories.

“I've been saying this since the year started — we're going to be an annoying team to play,” Arizona stater Zac Gallen said. “We have a lot of guys in there with something to prove. A lot of guys with chips on their shoulder. We're not going to have names that jump off the page. We grind it."

MJ Melendez homered, doubled and drove in three runs for Kansas City, which has lost six in a row and eight of 10.

“He's a dangerous hitter,” Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said. “He continues to show his power.”

Melendez’s RBI double sparked a three-run sixth inning capped by rookie Dairon Blanco’s two-run single for a 6-3 lead before the Diamondbacks scored five two-out runs in the last of the inning for reliever Joe Mantiply (2-0).

Amir Garrett gave up a walk and a single before being replaced by Taylor Clarke (1-1), who gave up a game-tying three-run homer to Luplow, a 408-footer that hugged the left field line.

Varsho doubled and Smith followed with a 415-foot shot to right, his second in as many games, for an 8-6 lead. Arizona had six homers in sweeping the two-game series.

“You play your role the best you can and you try to grow in that role,” said Luplow, who has two pinch-hit homers this season. “You get the hand that's dealt. I was just looking for something over the middle of the plate. Not trying to do too much with it, and sometimes a lot happens."

Whit Merrifield had two hits for the Royals, who have lost leads of six, four and three runs in their last three games.

“It's hard to have three tougher ones than these three in a row,” Matheny said.

Mark Melancon pitched around a leadoff single in the ninth for his 10th save in 11 chances.

Gallen entered the game with a 1.14 ERA but gave up six runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. He had not given up more than two runs and five hits in any of his previous seven starts.

Diamondbacks relievers Mantiply, Ian Kennedy, and Noe Ramirez lead the NL lead with 21 appearances after each pitched Tuesday. Mantiply, 2-0 with two saves and an 0.51 ERA, has been scored upon once.

Lovullo said he was “very concerned” about the usage. “I don’t want any of our guys to have 80 appearances this year," he said, "That’s way too many. We embrace close games. We need our horses to go out there protect those games when we are ahead. We’ll be mindful of that. I have to make sure I don’t get anybody hurt.”

Bobby Witt Jr. attended Arizona’s clinching Game 7 victory over the New York Yankees in the 2001 World Series at Chase Field and rode in victory parade the next day, although the memories are a little fuzzy. Then again, he was only 16 1/2 months old.

“There are pictures out there with me and the trophy, but I don’t remember any of that,” Witt Jr. said.

Witt’s father Bobby, who was 4-1 with Arizona in 2001 in the final year of his 15-year major league career, was at the games this week.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A survey of college athletes by the NCAA suggests that rates of mental exhaustion, anxiety and depression remain as much as twice as high as pre-pandemic levels, but feelings of hopelessness have improved. 

The results of the study, a follow-up to two conducted in the fall of 2020, were released Tuesday. The data is based on input from more than 9,800 respondents and shows that mental health concerns remain sharply elevated. 

The survey was conducted from Nov. 17-Dec. 13 and was designed by NCAA research in collaboration with the NCAA Sport Science Institute and the Division I, II and III Student-Athlete Advisory Committees.

The results show that 69% of women’s sports participants and 63% of men’s sports participants agreed or strongly agreed that they know where to go on campus if they have mental health concerns. However, less than half of each said they would agree or strongly agree that they would feel comfortable seeking support from a mental health provider on campus. 

The NCAA constitution mandates that each member school create an environment that reinforces the need for and encourages the availability of resources for the physical and mental health concerns within athletics.

Since March 1, at least five athletes at NCAA member institutions have died by suicide, highlighting the growing need for awareness of services available on campus as students juggle the stresses of athletic competition, expectations, academics, a social life and plans for the future. 

“A lot of what influences the direction on this topic is what sort of conversations are happening on a campus surrounding mental health,” Scott Hamilton, a mental health clinical counselor at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, said in a new release. “Are there groups on campus, whether through the athletics department or through counseling services, using their voice to help reduce the stigma?” 

Working with teams, Hamilton said, has been effective in changing mindsets. 

"When college campuses are willing to have open conversations about the importance of mental health, taking care of yourself mentally can ease the apprehension of student-athletes seeking help,” he said. 

According to survey data, 65% of female athletes and 58% of male athletes agreed or strongly agreed they take the mental health concerns of teammates seriously, and 56% of both sexes said they know how to help a teammate with a mental health concern.

Jones Award, presented by Summit Pointe Financial Group, announced Tuesday (May 24) by the league office. The annual award recognizes the conference's male and female student-athletes of the year. The Ken B. Jones Award has seen a two-year absence since the COVID-19 pandemic changed the format for this honor. In 2019-20, the conference instead recognized both a male and female fall student-athlete of the year and winter student-athlete of the year. The spring season that year was cut short due to the pandemic and spring student-athletes did not have an opportunity to build a resume of accomplishments for the annual Ken B. Jones Award. In 2020-21, fall student-athletes did not have an opportunity to compete, so the conference honored winter and spring student-athletes of the year. This will be the first time since 2018-19 that the format returns to an award given to just one male and female student-athlete for all seasons. Randall was the MIAA Women's Winter Student-Athlete of the Year in 2020-21. The winners will be announced at the 2021-22 MIAA Awards Celebration presented by Husch Blackwell on Monday, June 6 at the Little Theatre inside historic Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City. Fort Hays State is one of two schools with two finalists this year, with Nebraska-Kearney also sending a pair of athletes to the Awards Celebration. Fort Hays State has now had 15 Ken B. Jones Award finalists since joining the MIAA in 2006-07. Three Tigers have earned the conference's top honor, including Ryan Stanley (2020-21 spring), Randall (2020-21 winter) and Kate Lehman (2014-15). A 13-member panel of athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors - including a representative from each member institution - select the finalists. Randall, an Alva, Okla. native, is one of five women's finalists alongside Ashlan Burton (UCM, track &amp; field), Taryn Kedzior (UCO, soccer), Faith Rottinghaus (WU, volleyball) and Maddie Squiers (UNK, volleyball). The three-year starter earned third-team All-MIAA honors in 2021-22, her second-straight all-conference honor after picking up first-team status the previous season. Randall was the 2022 MIAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player after leading the Tigers to the championship by averaging 15 points per game in Kansas City. She helped the Tigers to their third regular season MIAA title while leading the team to the top seed in the NCAA DII Central Regional for the third time over the last four seasons. After helping the team to 30 wins this season, Randall has now been on two of the four 30-win teams in program history. She averaged 10.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 steals per game in her final season as a Tiger while wrapping up her career ranked ninth on the all-time scoring list with 1,396 points. Randall also earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors for the second year in a row in 2021-22, picking up second team status after being named to the third team in 2020-21. She maintained a perfect 4.00 GPA throughout her five years at Fort Hays State, graduating with a degree in Health and Human Performance in December 2021 before starting a graduate program in sports administration this spring. Off the court, Randall has volunteered at numerous educational events for local elementary students. Krol
 is a Nickerson native and played college baseball at Hutchinson 
Community College and at Nicholls State before finishing at Fort Hays 
State.&nbsp;

Krol is the son of&nbsp;longtime Nickerson baseball coach Rich Krol.

won the 3A title by one shot over Hesston’s Camden Waterson. Middleton shot a 2-under 68. Norton freshman Eli Jones shot an 82 and placed 21st.

a 9-over 80. Austin Carroll or Ellis finished tied for 18th at 12-over. His Railer teammate Mason Gottschalk tied for 20th place one shot back. Trego’s Tyler

⛳ Rain washes away day two of the state championships

In 2021, the Dylan Dreiling junior season was highlighted by his pitching exploits by going undefeated with a 9-0 record, setting a school record for season wins while also establish a season earned-run-average mark of 0.52.

His Hays High Indians had finished third in Class 5A and Dreiling had hit .427 from his left-handed side of the plate. His 86 at-bats produced 37 hits with seven doubles, three triples and three home runs with 26 RBIs and 27 runs scored.

He earned Western Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Year.

When his 2022 season got under way, Dreiling was nursing a tender arm and then suffered a leg injury that kept him off the mound most of the season.

What Dreiling accomplished was hitting .597 (school season record) with 40 hits in 67 official at-bats. He walked 24 times, meaning he received a free pass 26 percent of the time he came to the plate.

“Considering the injuries I battled, I thought the senior season went about as well as could be expected,” Dreiling said in a telephone interview. “The coaches let me hit and I’d do my best to get to the base. Sometimes, they’d pinch hit, but they couldn’t do that all the time.”

His explosion at the plate earned him a repeat of his WAC Baseball Player of the Year award.

He instead focused on his hitting and the 5-11, 195-pound Tennessee University bound Dreiling unloaded on opposing pitchers. The Volunteers have been the No. 1-ranked NCAA Division I team most of the spring season.

He produced 27 runs, 18 singles, 12 doubles and a season record 10 home runs. He struck out only four times and had 38 RBIs to cap off a season in which his slugging percentage reached an unheard of 1.223.

He said the Volunteer coaching staff has indicated an outfield position will be his most likely position with the possibility of some spot pitching.&nbsp;

“It was a little frustrating because it (walks) came more at the end of the year,” Dreiling said. “I think the numbers indicate that I got stronger this year and I did that by getting in the weight room in the off-season.”

His limited time on the mound resulted in a 0-3 record in just four appearances. One of those, however, was a memorable 9.2 innings in a wild, 16-inning home game against Manhattan in which Dreiling crushed a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 12th&nbsp;to tie the game at 2-all, only to see the visitors produce two winning runs in the 16th.

“It was just a fun game to play, but disappointing to lose,” Dreiling said. “Hitting the home run (opposite field to left) was something I’ll always remember.”

Dreiling, who played elite summer baseball in Georgia, said he worked hard to re-adjust his hitting to the speed of the pitchers he faced in Kansas as opposed to more powerful pitching in his summer league.

“Sometimes, it was hard to stay back on a pitch, but I figured it out,” he said. “I saw a lot of sliders and curves, but the intentional walks were the hardest to accept.”

Dreiling, who played in the outfield in his freshman and junior seasons (sophomore season canceled due to COVID-19), said he will remember the special times playing with his childhood friends throughout his three-year career with HHS.

“These are the guys I grew up playing with since we were little kids,” Dreiling said. “They are my lifetime friends and I will just remember many things that were fun. We had a lot of success.”

This year, the Indians went 6-2 in the WAC and shared the conference title with Great Bend, whose coach, Randy Beck, earned the WAC Coach of the Year honor.

Dreiling leaves Hays High with 11 season and career records, including an 18-strikeout game his junior year.&nbsp;

“Each season has its own special memory I think,” Dreiling said. “I don’t think any one season stands out more than others. I just enjoyed playing with all my friends. That was the best part.”

Dreiling was joined on the all-WAC first team by teammate Garrett Wellbrock while co-champion Great Bend snared three spots – Chayse Gruber, Sage Koelsch and Paco Hernandez. Garden City, third in the conference, had seniors Micah Perez and Caleb Metzen on the squad; Chayston Keck and Aidan Sowers represented Dodge City while Hunter Huskey of Liberal rounded out the first team.

⛳ Several area golfers advance to day two of state tournament

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona's familiarity with Zack Greinke led to a solid offensive night against the Diamondbacks' former pitcher.

Christian Walker and Pavin Smith homered, and Ketel Marte’s two-run double broke a fourth-inning tie to help the Diamondbacks beat Kansas City 9-5 Monday night in Greinke’s first appearance at Chase Field since he left at the 2019 trade deadline after 3.5 seasons in Arizona.

Greinke (0-3) gave up seven earned runs, two homers and four walks, all single-game highs this season.

“I think we know the things that he likes to do and the areas he likes to attack,” Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. “He’s a creature of habit. It’s worked very well for a long time, and he’s not going to make adjustments unless he has to. I know that his changeup wasn’t landing, and we saw that it wasn’t landing early, and that was a big advantage for us.”

Whit Merrifield, Bobby Witt Jr. and Hunter Dozier hit bases-empty homers 13 pitches into the game, and the Royals added another run in the first inning for a 4-0 lead before suffering their second demoralizing loss in as many days.

Kansas City, which has lost five in a row and seven of nine, failed to hold a 6-0 lead after seven innings in a 7-6 home loss to Minnesota on Sunday.

Smith and Walker homered in the bottom of the first to cut the Kansas City lead to 4-3, and Arizona tied it at 5-all in third inning when Greinke walked the first two he faced and both scored.

“The game started off, the ball seemed like it was flying, a lot of home runs being hit,” Greinke said. “And then had some close pitches called balls and kind of got scared to throw strikes a little bit. I think is what happened.”

Greinke: 'I didn't attack the zone enough'

Marte’s two-out double off Joel Payamps drove in two for a 7-5 lead, with both runs charged to Greinke.

The Diamondbacks had eight runs against Greinke in nine innings in his two previous starts against them, both in Houston.

“It was great, especially against a guy with that kind of repertoire and that sort of reputation,” Smith said of the approach against Greinke. “Especially going down 4-nothing in the first inning, we wanted to see some pitches and grind out some good ABs."

J.B. Wendelken (1-1) got out of a bases-loaded situation after replacing injured starter Zach Davies in the fourth inning for the Diamondbacks, who have won four of five.

Davies gave up eight hits and five runs before being knocked out of the game with a right leg contusion when he was struck by Witt’s line drive that loaded the bases with two outs.

X-rays on Davies were negative and he is to get a C-T scan Tuesday, Lovullo said, calling into question his availability for his next start Sunday.

Greinke joined the Diamondbacks on a six-year, $206.5 million contract in 2016, when his average yearly salary of $34.4 million was the highest in major league history.

Greinke had given up two homers and four walks in his first eight starts over 44 innings this season. He struck out a season-high five.

Arizona first baseman Christian Walker is playing both sides of the ball. He hit his 11th home run to tie for the NL lead with Colorado’s C.J. Cron.

Walker entered Monday's game leading major league first basemen with seven “defensive runs saved,” as calculated by Sports Info Solutions. Kansas City’s Carlos Santana was tied for second with three. Walker was a Gold Glove finalist in 2019.

Merrifield stole a run for a 5-3 lead after singling to lead off the second inning. He stole second base with a head-first slide, and when a one-hop throw got away broke toward an uncovered third.

Geraldo Perdomo sailed a throw past third base and Merrifield got up from a head-first slide up beat a throw home, this time going in feet first.

Royals: OF Michael Taylor (undisclosed) missed his fifth straight game and has no timetable to return.

⚾ Former TMP standout commits to North Dakota State

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Gio Urshela hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning to complete Minnesota's comeback from a six-run deficit, lifting the Twins over the Kansas City Royals 7-6 Sunday.

“That win was pretty special,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. “It was special in the way it came together, the number of contributors."

Down 6-0, the Twins scored five times in the eighth, capped by Kyle Garlick's two-run homer.

Jorge Polanco drew a leadoff walk from Josh Staumont (1-1) in the ninth, Max Kepler doubled and Gary Sanchez tied it with his second sacrifice fly in two innings. With two outs, Urshela singled for the lead.

“It was great last two innings as a team we were taking good at-bats which is very important for us,” Urshela said. "There was good energy in the dugout going into the ninth and we were able to fight back.”

Reliever Tyler Duffey (2-2) got the win and Jhoan Duran pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save.

Twins starter Bailey Ober tossed five innings and allowed one run and three hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

Brady Singer gave Kansas City seven innings for the second consecutive start, allowing no runs and four hits. He struck out three and walked three.

Royals relievers Taylor Clarke, Scott Barlow and Staumont squandered the 6-0 lead.

LENEXA, Kan. – Hays High freshman Izabel Schmidt finished sixth
in Saturday’s final of the 100 Yard Freestyle and seventh in the 50 Yard Freestyle
at the KSHSAA 5-1A State Swimming and Diving Championships at the Shawnee Mission
School District Aquatic Center.

After recording a preliminary time of 54.80, Schmidt broke
her own school record in the finals with a time of 54.41. Bishop Carroll junior Karis Reynaga won the
event with a time of 52.53.

Schmidt had a time of 25.11 in the 50 Yard Freestyle final. Andover
senior Natalie Nugent won the race with a time of 24.18.

KANSAS CITY, Mo (AP) — Kyle Garlick and Jose Miranda each drove in two runs, leading Devin Smeltzer and the Minnesota Twins past the Kansas City Royals 6-4 on Friday night.

Garlick put Minnesota on the scoreboard with an RBI single in a three-run first inning and added a sacrifice fly in the second. He was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the fourth.

Miranda had two hits, including a two-run double with two outs in the eighth that made it 6-3.

"It felt great getting that first hit out of the way,” Miranda said. "Then getting the second one in a clutch situation when the team needed me, it just felt great to come through.”

Smeltzer (1-0) allowed one run and five hits over 5 1/3 innings, throwing 74 pitches in his second major league start this season. He walked one and did not record a strikeout.

“Smeltzer was excellent,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “He is helping us win ballgames, which is all he cares about and all we care about. But he was efficient and did a really nice job.”

Jhoan Duran worked 1 2/3 hitless innings to set up Emilio Pagán for his sixth save. Pagán gave up three hits in the ninth, including Emmanuel Rivera's solo homer.

⚾ Royals rally comes up short against Twins

EMPORIA – The Hays High boys track and field team had three
individual champions along with a relay and won the team title at the Emporia
5A Regional Friday at Emporia State’s Welch Stadium. It's the second straight year the Indians have won the regional meet, scoring 109
points, 38 ahead of second place Great Bend.

Jordan Dale won the high jump, Grayson Walburn the discus
and Wyatt Waddell the javelin. The 4x100 meter relay team of Trent Summers,
Archie Keamonie, Malik Bah and Chason VanDerWege also won gold.

VenDerWege qualified in three events. In addition to being
on the winning relay he finished second in the 200 meters and fourth in the 100
meters.

Great Bend won the girls team title with 151 1/2 points.
Hays High was third with ans were third with 60 1/2. 

The Indian girls qualified five individuals in six events
and two relays. Lilian McGrath, who qualified in four events, won the long jump.
She finished second in the 200 meters and was on the 4x100 relay which finished
second and the 4x400 which placed third. Broolynn Lewallen and Amelia Jaeger
both qualified in three events. Lewallen was third in the 100 meter hurdles and
on both relays. Jaeger was third in the 400 meters and also on both relays.
