Hays girls win; boys lose to Garden City

Hays High played their only home games of January, hosting Garden City on Friday night. It was the Indians final Western Athletic Conference action before the midseason tournament in Colby next Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Hays 52 - Garden City 43

The Hays High Indians followed up an impressive win in Great Bend on Tuesday with another WAC in against Garden City 52-43. The Indians started strong scoring 17 points before Garden got on the board.

The Indians led 17-2 after one quarter and pushed the advantage to 18 twice at 22-4 and 25-7. The Buffaloes were able to end the quarter on a 11-5 run and cut the lead down to 30-18 by halftime. 

Highlights

Garden City continued to trim the lead and pulled it down to six with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter at 40-34. Hays thought didn't allow the Buffaloes to get any closer, scoring on their next three possessions to once again establish a double digit lead.

Garden City missed their last 10 three pointers and Hays held on for a 52-43 victory.

The Indians were led by Jillyan Sheldon with 13 points and Carly Lang at 11. Garden City was paced by Makenzie Lucas at 13 points.

Hays improves to 6-3 on the year and 2-1 in conference play. Garden City drops to 4-6, 1-2.

Hays heads to the Orange & Black Classic next week were they will face Lamar, Colorado

Hays 56 - #8-6A Garden City 60

The Garden City Buffaloes entered Friday undefeated through nine games and two conference contests. Their closest game was a three point win at Great Bend. Hays led by as many as six and trailed by seven but couldn't pull off the victory.

Garden City used a pair of 6-2 runs in the first quarter to lead 16-10 through the first eight minutes. However in the second quarter the Buffaloes made just one field goal opening the door for Hays to comeback and take the lead.

A run of 11-2 put Hays up 25-19 with under a minute left in the first half. Garden City hit a three with under 20 second left before halftime for a 25-22 Hays lead.

Highlights

Garden City hit 9 of 14 third quarter shots and used an 8-0 lead to regain the lead at 39-33. The Buffaloes continued to lead after three quarters 41-37 and built their advantage to a game high seven points at 44-37 thirty seconds into the fourth quarter.

The Indians pulled that lead down to a single possession ball game five times. The latest at 56-54 with two minutes remaining. Hays did get ball back down by the same score but had a shot tipped near the rim.

Hays did not score over the final two minutes, losing 60-54.

Hays was led by Jack Weimer with 18 points. Chason VanDerWege added 12. Iziah Salinas led Garden City with 18 points, all scored in the second half.

Hays falls to 4-5, 1-2. Garden is 10-0, 3-0.

Hays heads to the Orange & Black Classic next week were they will face Goodland at 6:30 in the auxiliary gym.
