The TMP-Marian Monarchs baseball team is headed back to the 3A state tournament after picking up a pair of regional wins Wednesday in Great Bend.

Championship game: TMP 12, Larned 3 After a little bit of a slow start the TMP offense came to life in the bottom of the fifth inning, exploding for seven runs on their way to a 12-3 win over Larned in the 3A regional championship game.

For the third straight game the Monarchs scored two runs in the first innings thanks to an RBI single by Jace Wentling and an error.

Wentling, who struck out the side in the first, struggled in the second inning allowing Larned to come back at tie the game at two. They took advantage of a hit-by-pitch and a pair of walks in the inning.

A bases loaded balk by the Larned started scored the Monarchs third run of the game in the second inning. But Larned again had answer tying the game at three in the top of the third.

The big inning came in the bottom of the fifth for TMP. The Monarchs sent 12 men to the plate, scoring seven runs to take a 10-3 lead.

In the inning the Monarchs took advantage of four walking, that including Garrett Feauto's bases loaded walk to put TMP up 4-3.

Chet Irvin followed the Feauto walk with a pinch-hit two-run single putting TMP up 6-3.&nbsp;

Joey Mindrup singled in a run and then Griffin Schumacher plated two more with singe to left putting TMP up 9-3.

Schumacher scored the 10th TMP run on a throwing error by the catcher for a 10-3 TMP lead.

The Monarchs added two more in the bottom of the sixth inning to go up 12-3.

Jace Wentling got the win on the mound for the Monarchs as he improved to 3-3. He allowed just one hit and two earned runs over five innings for the win. He struck out five but walked four and hit two-batters.

Wentling, Nick Helget and Joey Mindrup all scored three times and Griffin Schumacher and Chet Irvin both had two RBI's.&nbsp;

Regional Semifinal: TMP 6, Beloit 5 In the first game of the day TMP starter Caden Morgan pitched his first career complete game and he and Jace Wentling each drove in two in the 6-5 TMP win.

After Morgan struck out the side in order in the first TMP wasted little time getting in the score colunm. Wentling tripled home a run and Morgan follwed with a sacrifice fly to put TMP up 2-0.

In the third inning Wentling and Morgan added their second RBI's of the game for a 4-1 lead.&nbsp;

Beloit plated three runs in the top of the fourth tying the game at 4.

In the bottom of that inning Griffin Schumacher singled home a run to put TMP up 5-4. He would later scored on an error for a 6-4 lead.

Beloit got a run in the top of the seventh and they got the tying run to third but Morgan retired the strikeout for the TMP win.

Morgan allowed three earned runs, five total runs on four hits in seven innings. Morgan improved to 4-0 on the mound.&nbsp;

TMP is 14-5 heading into the state tournament in Manhattan May 26 &amp; 27.

⚾ TMP-Marian punches ticket to state tournament

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. and MJ Melendez homered and fellow rookie Emmanuel Rivera hit a go-ahead triple, leading the Kansas City Royals over the Chicago White Sox 6-2 Wednesday night.

Witt, Melendez and Rivera each had two hits.

“The young guys provided a lot of excitement,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “It was fun to watch them.”

Rivera’s sinking liner escaped a diving Adam Engel, rolling into the right field corner for a triple that drove in Melendez with the tiebreaking run in the sixth.

Melendez padded the lead with a two-run homer, his second, in the eighth.

“It felt really good,” Melendez said. “Going into that at-bat, I had a really good plan. I felt really confident. Anything to the outfield I felt pretty confident to get that run in.”

Witt hit his fourth home run, a 436-foot drive off White Sox starter Lucas Giolito.

“(He) hits the ball hard,” Matheny said. “That’s what he’s always done all the way through the minor league system. Even as an amateur, that’s the thing that’s always stood out. To have consistently hard contact. He’s in a really good place now. He’s got enough power when he’s short to the ball.”

In his return from the COVID-19-related injured list, Giolito labored early, needing 54 pitches to complete the first two innings, allowing four hits and two walks.

“(It was) not my best,” Giolito said. “But I’m happy to be back, and back in a normal routine.”

After Witt’s leadoff homer in the third, however, he struck out six of the next seven batters and permitted only a pair of singles before being lifted after five innings.

Royals starter Zack Greinke hasn’t won since Aug. 13 last year, while with the Astros. He allowed two runs on seven hits, striking out four in 5 2/3 innings.

“We’ve got to get him a win, ’cause he’s throwing good enough to have a bunch of them,” Matheny said. “He’s a joy to watch. That’s pitching at its finest, how he manipulates and makes minor adjustments, figuring out ways to get the break he wants on his slider. He’s very unique and he’s doing such a great job of making big pitches in big situations.”

“I think the last time I paid attention (to wins) was 2005,” Greinke said. “I started pitching good, but didn’t get many wins and then started trying to do more and then started making mistakes, trying to get wins instead of trying to get outs. Nowadays, it’s harder than ever. It’s harder to go deep in games than it used to be.”

Greinke walked Engel in the fifth, his first free pass since April 21 against Minnesota, a span of 128 batters.

The second of Tim Anderson’s three singles drove in Engel to make it 2-all. Anderson has nine multi-hit performances in his last 17 contests, batting .378 (28 for 74) in that span.

Rookie Collin Snyder (3-1) recorded the final out of the sixth for the win. Reynaldo Lopez (4-1) took the loss.

Royals OF Michael A. Taylor was removed from Wednesday’s lineup due to MLB’s COVID-19 protocols for contact tracing.

The White Sox reinstated Giolito and RHP Davis Martin was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte. RHP Lance Lynn was transferred to the 60-day IL.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian softball team
took a two-run lead into the bottom of the sixth in their 3A regional semifinal
Wednesday at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex, but Beloit rallied for three
runs and beat the Monarchs 3-2.

The Trojans (17-4) used three
doubles along with a walk and an error to pull off the comeback.

The Monarchs (12-10) were retired in
order on two groundouts and a strikeout in the seventh.

TMP grabbed the early lead when Hannah Garcia doubled and scored on a Brooke Koeningsman single in the top of the first. They added another run in the fourth when Halle Dreiling
scored on a Jaci VonLintel two-out single.

Dreiling finished with three hits.
Alexa Ryersee added two as the Monarchs out-hit Beloit 10-4.

Madison Augustine (11-9) went the
distance in the circle and gave up four hits with four walks and four
strikeouts.

Beloit lost to Hoisington 11-0 in
five innings in the regional final.

🥎 Monarchs come up short in regional semifinal

NEWTON - A furious seventh inning comeback fell one run short for the Hays High Indians in the first round of Regional play in Newton on Wednesday.

Hays scored five runs in the final inning all with two outs. Lainey Hardman sparked the late rally with a single followed by triples by Ashlynn Zimmer and Aubree Thomas. The Indians put the tying and go ahead run into scoring position but could not extend the game, falling 9-8.

Four errors over the first two innings by the Hays High Indians helped Andover Central plate eight runs and grab an early lead they would never give up.

The Jaguars pushed six across the plate in the first inning that saw Hays commit three errors. The Indians throwing error in the second inning plated two more runs and increased the Andover Central lead to 8-0.

Avery Solida scored the Indians first run in the bottom of the second. Hays couldn't take advantage of multiple base runners in each of the first four innings, stranding eight.&nbsp;

Hays totaled 16 hits on the day but stranded 13 runners. Andover Central tallied 11 hits and stranded six. They committed two errors in the game, both in the seventh inning. Hays finished with the four errors from the first two innings.

Ashlynn Zimmer had a three hit game. Lainey Hardman, Avery Solida, Elle Dreiling, Riley Dreher and Aubree Thomas all had multi-hit games.

Hays finishes the year at 13-9. Andover Central advances to the Regional Championship at 10-11.

The TMP-Marian softball team will take on Beloit in the second semifinal game of the 3A regional tournament Wednesday at the Bickle Schmidt Sports Complex.

The first pitch is scheduled to start at approximately 5 p.m. The Hertz Rental Car Pregame Show will start at 4:45 p.m.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brady Singer outdueled Davis Martin as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 2-1 in the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Singer (1-0) had his best outing since last September 5, when he threw seven shutout innings against the White Sox. He struck out a career high nine batters and didn’t walk anyone. He allowed just four hits in seven innings.

Josh Staumont earned his third save in five chances.

Davis Martin (0-1) made his debut and was equally impressive. He allowed just one run on five hits in five innings, walking one and striking out seven.

The Royals finally capitalized in the second inning after going 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position in the first game. Emmanuel Rivera led off the inning with a double and scored on a Michael A. Taylor double into left field.

The Royals got another run in the sixth on M.J. Melendez’s first career home run, a 425-foot blast to right center.

The White Sox got a run in the eighth, but left fielder Andrew Benintendi threw out Josh Harrison as he tried to score from second on a single.

The White Sox won the first game behind clutch hitting by Jose Abreu and working around Kansas City offensive threats. Abreu’s two-out, two-run double keyed a three-run fifth inning.

“We only scored three ourselves,” manager Tony La Russa said. “The way I was taught to look at it is ‘What did they have to hit?’ If you don’t get pitches to hit, you don’t hit them. There were very few mistakes made in RBI situations.”

White Sox: Selected the contract of RHP Davis Martin from Triple-A Charlotte. He made his Major League debut. They also added RHP Kyle Crick as the 27th man on the roster for the doubleheader. The White Sox placed RHP Michael Kopech on the paternity list. To make room for Martin on the 40-man roster, the White Sox moved LHP Garrett Crochet to the 60-day IL.

TOPEKA – The Hays High baseball team
won a 1-0 thriller over Maize in their regional opener Tuesday but came up on
the short end of a 5-0 score to host Topeka Seaman in their 5A regional finals
hosted by the Vikings.

Seaman advances to their 18th
straight 5A State Tournament while the Indians season ends at 13-9.

Game 1: Hays 1, Maize 0 
Garrett Wellbrock’s RBI single with one out in the top of the seventh scored Will
Cadoret with the game’s only run. It came after Dylan Dreiling was intentionally
walked.

Wellbrock (6-1) pitched a complete
game shutout, scattering six hits and matching a season-high eight strikeouts.

Cooper Burke allowed one run on five hits with nine strikeouts and was the tough
luck loser for the Eagles who ends their season at 13-8.

The Indians had plenty of chances
early stranding six baserunners in the first three innings and had two runners
on in four of the first six innings. 

Game 2: Topeka-Seaman 5, Hays 0 Bryson Vawter and Maclane Finley
combined on a two-hitter in the rematch of last year's quarterfinal game at the 5A State Tournament. Vawter struck out seven with two walks for the win,

The Vikings (20-2) scored their
first run in the bottom of the first on a double that was lost in the sun. They
added another run in the third on a squeeze play. Cameron Selbach’s two-run triple

pitch.

Dreiling (0-3) suffered the loss. The
senior allowed four earned runs on just three hits with nine strikeouts and
three walks.

⚾ Indians come up short in regional final

SPEARVILLE – The Ellis softball team
defeated Bucklin 11-7 to advance to their 2-1A regional title game but lost
15-0 to host Spearville Tuesday. 

The Railers end their season with a
17-6 record.

Game 1: Ellis 11, Bucklin 7 The Railers built a 10-1 lead then
held off a late rally by the Red Aces.

Ellis scored two in the first on a Michelle
Gottschalk triple then added a run in the second on a B Born double and another
run in the third on a double from Gottschalk to go up 4-0.

The Railers plateed six in the fourth
then added another run in the fifth for the 10-1 lead. Kaydawn Haag drove in
two of the runs in the sixth with a single. Hannah Schiel drove in a run with a
double and later scored on an error.

Bucklin rallied with two in the
bottom of the fifth then scored four in the bottom of the seventh. 

Schiel and Gottschalk both had three
hits. Haag and Gottschalk both drove in three runs.

Haag allowed three runs on nine hits
over six innings and picked up the win in the circle.

INDIANAPOLIS - The Fort Hays State track and field teams had 16&nbsp;individuals selected to compete in 18 entries at the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships later this month in Allendale, Mich. (May 26-28). Five women will compete in eight separate events, while 11&nbsp;male student-athletes will represent Fort Hays State in 10 events.&nbsp;This year's National Championships are being held in Allendale, Mich. for the second year in a row, with Grand Valley State once again assuming the hosting duties. Holman is heading to the national meet for the fourth time in her career. She has earned five All-America honors in all five of her entries at the national level, including two podium finishes and three second-team awards. The Junction City, Kan. native advanced to the finals in the 200m dash last year, placing eighth. Rossi is entered in multiple events for the third national meet in a row, however this is the first time she has qualified in three separate events. She is a three-time All-American, placing fifth in the indoor pentathlon this season in addition to a pair of second-team honors (indoor 60m hurdles, outdoor heptathlon). Hart is competing in her fourth National Championship after winning the indoor title as a freshman in 2021. She added a second All-American trophy with a seventh-place finish outdoors last year before picking up second team All-America status indoors this season. Berens and Brown are both in the javelin competition at the national meet for the second year in a row. The pair made the trip to Michigan last spring, with Berens finishing 11th to earn second team All-America honors and Brown placing 17th. This is the second year in a row that the men had two relay teams selected to compete in the outdoor meet. Both squads reached the All-American podium last season, with the same team returning this year in the 4x400m relay and three of the four 4x100m legs identical to last year's unit. Lang is in the field at the national meet for the third time. He has a pair of All-American trophies to his name after advancing to the finals in indoor 800m run this season and placing seventh as a part of last season's outdoor 4x400m relay team. Schmidt is competing at the final meet in track and field for the first time after twice advancing to the NCAA DII Cross Country Championships. He placed 62nd last fall as an individual while leading the Tigers with a 125th-place finish when FHSU qualified as a team in 2019. Clark is competing at the national meet for the second time after earning an All-American trophy with a sixth-place finish indoors earlier this season. This is the sophomore's first trip to the outdoor meet. The England native set the outdoor school record with a clearance of 17-3 last month. Two-time National Champion Stanley will look to defend his outdoor title after being selected to compete at the national meet for the sixth time. A five-time All-American, the Bennington, Kan. native won the national title with a clearance of 17-2.75 last year in Michigan before grabbing the indoor championship earlier this year after soaring over a school-record 17-9.25. Robinson is in the field in the triple jump at the national meet for the second time this year after placing 13th indoors, one spot outside second team All-America honors. He earned a spot on the All-American podium as a part of the 4x100m relay team that placed sixth last year in Allendale. This is Enns' first trip to the NCAA Championships, however the Montezuma, Kan. native is no stranger to national competition. The senior placed first at the NJCAA Division I Championships in 2019 when he was competing for Garden City CC. He qualified for nationals after a personal-best toss of 208-9 earlier this month at the MIAA Championships. Churchman is off to his third NCAA meet in hopes to add to his two All-American trophies. INDIANAPOLIS - The Fort Hays State track and field teams had 16&nbsp;individuals selected to compete in 18 entries at the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships later this month in Allendale, Mich. (May 26-28). Five women will compete in eight separate events, while 11&nbsp;male student-athletes will represent Fort Hays State in 10 events.&nbsp;This year's National Championships are being held in Allendale, Mich. for the second year in a row, with Grand Valley State once again assuming the hosting duties. Holman is heading to the national meet for the fourth time in her career. She has earned five All-America honors in all five of her entries at the national level, including two podium finishes and three second-team awards. The Junction City, Kan. native advanced to the finals in the 200m dash last year, placing eighth. Rossi is entered in multiple events for the third national meet in a row, however this is the first time she has qualified in three separate events. She is a three-time All-American, placing fifth in the indoor pentathlon this season in addition to a pair of second-team honors (indoor 60m hurdles, outdoor heptathlon). Hart is competing in her fourth National Championship after winning the indoor title as a freshman in 2021. She added a second All-American trophy with a seventh-place finish outdoors last year before picking up second team All-America status indoors this season. Berens and Brown are both in the javelin competition at the national meet for the second year in a row. The pair made the trip to Michigan last spring, with Berens finishing 11th to earn second team All-America honors and Brown placing 17th. This is the second year in a row that the men had two relay teams selected to compete in the outdoor meet. Both squads reached the All-American podium last season, with the same team returning this year in the 4x400m relay and three of the four 4x100m legs identical to last year's unit. Lang is in the field at the national meet for the third time. He has a pair of All-American trophies to his name after advancing to the finals in indoor 800m run this season and placing seventh as a part of last season's outdoor 4x400m relay team. Schmidt is competing at the final meet in track and field for the first time after twice advancing to the NCAA DII Cross Country Championships. He placed 62nd last fall as an individual while leading the Tigers with a 125th-place finish when FHSU qualified as a team in 2019. Clark is competing at the national meet for the second time after earning an All-American trophy with a sixth-place finish indoors earlier this season. This is the sophomore's first trip to the outdoor meet. The England native set the outdoor school record with a clearance of 17-3 last month. Two-time National Champion Stanley will look to defend his outdoor title after being selected to compete at the national meet for the sixth time. A five-time All-American, the Bennington, Kan. native won the national title with a clearance of 17-2.75 last year in Michigan before grabbing the indoor championship earlier this year after soaring over a school-record 17-9.25. Robinson is in the field in the triple jump at the national meet for the second time this year after placing 13th indoors, one spot outside second team All-America honors. He earned a spot on the All-American podium as a part of the 4x100m relay team that placed sixth last year in Allendale. This is Enns' first trip to the NCAA Championships, however the Montezuma, Kan. native is no stranger to national competition. The senior placed first at the NJCAA Division I Championships in 2019 when he was competing for Garden City CC. He qualified for nationals after a personal-best toss of 208-9 earlier this month at the MIAA Championships. Churchman is off to his third NCAA meet in hopes to add to his two All-American trophies. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Luis Robert hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning after Johnny Cueto's impressive Chicago debut, and the White Sox defeated the Kansas City Royals 5-3 on Monday night in the opener of a five-game series.

Yasmani Grandal also had a two-run shot for the White Sox, who squandered a 3-0 lead in the eighth.

“It was an important win for us,” manager Tony La Russa said.

Robert connected off Scott Barlow (2-1) with two outs, scoring the automatic runner as well.

“I was just looking to make good contact and drive in that run,” Robert said. “The first pitch he threw me was a breaking ball. I was prepared for a fastball, but he threw me a breaking ball. I just hit it hard.”

The 36-year-old Cueto pitched six shutout innings in his first major league start this season after getting promoted from Triple-A Charlotte. He allowed just two hits and two walks, striking out seven. Only one runner reached second base against him.

“That’s the Johnny Cueto you’ve seen,” La Russa said. “He’s so deceptive. His fastball plays harder. He spots it. He’s down with a soft one and then he throws one by you. That shows you his talent. The number one thing we needed from him was to give us a chance to win. To go six shutout innings is more than you can (hope for). But you can’t be surprised. That’s what he has been his whole career."

Cueto, a two-time All-Star, made his first appearance on the Kauffman Stadium mound since throwing a two-hitter for Kansas City against the New York Mets to win Game 2 of the 2015 World Series. He was acquired from Cincinnati just before the trade deadline that year and played a key role in the Royals' championship.

“Throughout my career I have always put special emphasis on my first start of the season,” Cueto said. “I did it today. I was excited. I was facing a young team, a team that I used to play with. I knew this was a good team, too.”

Ryan Burr (1-1) worked a scoreless ninth and Liam Hendriks earned his 10th save in 13 tries.

Barlow got five outs without giving up a hit until Robert went deep.

Brad Keller also was solid for Kansas City. He allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings — with many of the hits coming on soft contact.

The White Sox got their first run on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Vaughn in the third. Adam Engel led off with a fly ball that dropped between left fielder Andrew Benintendi and center fielder Michael A. Taylor. Engel then stole second and scored on Vaughn’s fly to right.

Grandal made it 3-0 when he lined an 0-2 pitch into the right-field bullpen. He drove in Robert, who extended his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games with an infield single.

The Royals tied it in the eighth against Kendall Graveman. Whit Merrifield lined a two-run double off the wall in left-center. He went to third on the throw home and scored on a single by Benintendi.

Chicago selected Cueto’s contract and optioned INF Danny Mendick to Charlotte. Cueto agreed to a minor league deal with the White Sox in April. His contract includes a $4 million salary in the majors and a $210,000 salary in the minors. He went 0-1 with a 5.17 ERA in four starts with Charlotte.

Cueto spent the past six seasons with San Francisco, going 7-7 with a 4.08 ERA in 22 games, 21 starts, for the Giants last year.

The teams play a scheduled split doubleheader Tuesday.

The White Sox will send RHP Dylan Cease (3-1, 3.55 ERA) to the mound in the opener and wait until after that game to determine who gets the ball for the nightcap. La Russa said it’s possible RHP Lucas Giolito (2-1, 2.70) could return from the COVID-19 injured list.

The Royals will have Jonathan Heasley (0-1, 2.70 ERA) pitch one game and Brady Singer (0-0, 6.35) the other. Kansas City manager Mike Matheny had not announced the order.

⚾ White Sox homer their way to series win over Royals

HAYS – The TMP-Marian pitchers combined to allow just one
run and the Monarchs scored in every inning but one as they knocked off the
Ellinwood Eagles 9-1 Monday in the opening game of regionals at TMP Field.

The Monarchs (12-5) took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of
the first inning when Jace Wentling hit his first triple of the season to drive
in the games first run, he then scored on a throwing error to put the Monarchs
up a pair.

TMP added two more runs in the bottom of the second when Nick
Herrman and Mark Rack hit back-to-back RBI singles giving TMP a 4-0 lead.

After scoring a run in the bottom of the third TMP plated
three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when they second eight men to the plate.

Joey Mindrup doubled in a run and then Griffin Schumacher
singled in a pair of runs to put TMP up 8-0.

Each team added a run in the sixth but the Monarchs were
able to clinch the 9-1 victory.

Caden Morgan earned the victory with three shutout innings. He
allowed just two runs with four strikeouts.

Four Monarchs collected two hits led Joey Mindrup who was two-for-four
with two runs scored. 

TMP will take on Beloit in the regional semifinals Wednesday
afternoon in Great Bend.

Colby scored single runs in the
fifth, sixth and seventh innings but Madison Augustine got strikeout with a
runner on to end the game. Augustine allowed one earned run on eight this with
six strikeouts and three walks and picked up the complete game win.

Garcia had three of the Monarchs
seven hits.

The Monarchs will host
Beloit in the second semifinal tomorrow around 5 o’clock. The Trojans blanked
Larned 11-0. Hoisington/Central Plains and Russell/Victoria were the winners in
the top half of the bracket. The Cardinals beat Plainville/Stockton 16-0.

🥎 Monarchs beat Colby to advance in 3A regional

WICHITA – The Hays High boys golf team qualified two for next
week’s 5A State Tournament. Blake Buckles shot a 10-over par 82 and placed
sixth at the Maize Regional at Reflection Ridge Golf Course. Braxton Banker finished
13th after a 15-over 87.

Emporia’s Brookston Sauder won the individual title by one
shot over Grier Jones of Maize with a 3-over par, 75.

Emporia won the team title with a 324, 17 shots better than Valley
Center. Hays placed fifth with a 357.

The 5A State Tournament is next Monday and Tuesday at the Quail
Ridge Golf Course in Winfield.

⛳ HHS' Buckles, Banker qualify for state

LARNED – The TMP-Marian boys golf team qualified two for next
week’s 3A State Tournament. Pake Dewey shot a 9-over par 79 and placed third at
the Larned Regional at the Larned Country Club. Freshman Heuer Brungardt placed
eighth with a 20-over par 90.

Larned’s Easton Fitzpatrick won the individual title by six
shots after firing a 2-over par 72.

The Indians won the team title by two shots over Cimarron. TMP-Marian
place third, five shots out of second. 

The 3A State Golf Tournament is next Monday and Tuesday at the
Salina Municipal Golf Course.

for next week’s 2A State Tournament. Mason Gottschalk shot a 14-over par 86 and
tied for 10th place and sophomore Austin Carroll fired a 16-over 88 and tied
for 13th.

Trego’s Tyler Malsam also qualified after a 12-over par 84
tied him for seventh place.

Hoxie’s Ashton Dowell won the individual title in a playoff
over Hill City’s Dylan Budig. Both shot a 5-over 77 through the first 18 holes.
