WAKEENEY – The TMP-Marian Monarchs used a pair of double-digit
runs and ran their win streak over Russell to 10 straight with a 50-36 win over
the Broncos Friday in the MCL tournament semifinals.

Russell (7-5) scored the games first five points while TMP (7-2) opened
the game 0-5 from the floor but Luke Rome scored six straight to put TMP up 6-0
and he scored 12 of his game and career-high 19 in the first quarter as the Monarchs
built a 15-7 lead heading into the second quarter.

A three pointer by Kade Harris and a Rome bucket gave TMP their
largest lead of the first half at 22-8. But Russell was able to cut the 14 point
deficit in half with a 7-0 run to end the half.

Russell closed within five early in the third quarter at
25-20 but TMP outscored Russell 13-3 the rest of the way for a 38-23 lead.

Russell trimmer the TMP lead to 11 on two separate occasions
in the fourth quarter but the Monarchs proved to be too much in the 50-34 win.

Rome recorded his first double-double with 19 points and 10
rebounds and Dylan Werth added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Monarchs will take on Hill City in the MCL tournament title
game Monday in WaKeeney.

The league moved the tournament games back a day because of
the possibility of winter weather impacting the region.

They will play the boy and girls 1st and 3rd
place games in WaKeeney and the 5th and 7th place games
in Norton. Still no word on the location for the 9th and 11th
place games.

🏀 TMP boys advance to MCL tournament finals

COLBY - Both the Hays basketball teams made an appearance in the semifinals of the Orange &amp; Black Classic in Colby on Friday afternoon. The girls team faced off against #1-3A Goodland in a rematch of last year's semifinals that was a double overtime win by the Cowgirls. The boys game featured last year's tournament championship between Hays and Olathe North that Hays won.

Girls Hays 37 - #1-3A Goodland 44

Hays had opportunities to end the state's second longest winning streak but fall to Goodland 44-37 in a physical battle that saw 55 free throw attempts.

The early part of the game saw the two teams tied at three and five before Goodland scored seven straight points for a 12-5 lead in the second quarter. The Indians trimmed the lead to two points twice but could not take the lead before halftime.

Hays tied the game at 16 less than a minute into the third quarter and were down 25-24 with just over two minutes left in the quarter. The Indians had the ball on four possessions with an opportunity to take the lead but missed two shots and turned it over three times.

Goodland maintained the led into the fourth quarter. Hays took the lead at 32-31 on a pair of free throws by Carly Lang. The Cowgirls scored on their next possession before putting Hays back at the free throw line where the Indians tied the game but an Indian lane violation took away a second made attempt for the lead with 3:34 remaining.

Hays did not make a field goal rest of the way and scored just four points. Goodland made 9 of their final 11 free throws for a 44-37 win.

Hays falls to 7-4. Goodland remains undefeated at 11-0. Carly Lang led the Indians with 14. Fort Hays State basketball commit Talexa Weeter scored 20 for Goodland, making 12 of 16 free throws.

Boys Hays 28 - #6-6A Olathe North 39

A season low in points kept Hays from a third straight Orange &amp; Black Championship game, losing 39-28 against Olathe North.

Things started well for Hays scoring the first six points of the game while it took nearly four minutes for North to score for the first time. Once the Eagles got onto the board they tied the game at 10 points through the first eight minutes.&nbsp;

Hays fell behind 15-11 but held the Eagles without any points for the final 4:30 of the first half. The Indians scored seven points during that stretch for a 18-15 lead.

The Indians held a brief five point lead at 20-15 early in the third quarter. They continued to lead 20-17 but could not score on the next seven possession leading still by three.

Hays still led 23-21 into the fourth quarter. The Indians twice responded after falling behind. The last time Hays hit a three for a 28-26 lead with 4:30 remaining. That would the final points of the night for the Indians. North finished the game on a 13-0 run, eight of those points from the free throw line for the 39-28 final.

Hays falls to 5-6 and will play for 3rd place at 2:30 on Saturday. Olathe North is 9-1.

The Tigers still have two individuals listed in the individual rankings in&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/tereus-henry/7220">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/cade-lindsey/7240">Cade Lindsey</a>. Both Henry (197 pounds) and Lindsey (174 pounds) now rank fourth in their respective classes, with Henry falling one spot from the last release and Lindsey jumping up two spots. The Tigers earned 24 points in the voting process, two more than they earned in the previous&nbsp;release. Henry carries a record of 24-2, including an 19-1 mark over his last 20 matches. More than half of Henry's wins have been bonus-point victories, including three pins, four technical falls and eight major decisions. The El Paso, Texas native is a perfect 8-0 in duals this season. Lindsey enters the weekend 28-4 overall, including a 7-1 mark in dual competition. KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State was picked 11th&nbsp;in the 2023 MIAA Preseason Softball Coaches Poll, released on Friday. FHSU finished in a tie for ninth in the conference standings last year and enters its ninth year under head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/coaches/adrian-pilkington/1030">Adrian Pilkington</a>. Leading the preseason poll is defending national champion Rogers State. The Hillcats finished 58-10 in 2022, closing the year on a 10-game win streak. Even though they took third in the MIAA regular season standings, the Hillcats won the MIAA Tournament before going 11-1 in NCAA postseason play. The Hillcats fought off elimination on their home field in the Central Regional with three straight wins before sweeping Central Oklahoma in a best-of-3 super regional. They completed their run to the national title with a 5-0 performance at the Division II Championship site. Rogers State received seven first-place votes in the preseason poll. Defending regular 2022 MIAA regular season champion Washburn was picked second and received five first-place votes. The Ichabods went 45-15 in 2022 and were knocked out of the regional round of the NCAA tournament hosted by Rogers State. Central Oklahoma, also an NCAA Tournament participant in 2022 with a record of 48-13, received two first-place votes in the poll. The Bronchos hosted the other four-team NCAA Central Regional site and advanced to the super regional at Rogers State, where they were eliminated. The 2022 season was the first since 2017 when the MIAA had multiple teams reach the 40-win plateau in a season. 🏀 Thursday's high school results

STOCKTON - The TMP Lady Monarchs used a pair of big runs to
build an early lead and then held off a late comeback effort from Norton on their way to a 46-34 victory Thursday in the MCL tournament consolation
semifinals in Stockton.

The Monarchs (5-5, 2-1 MCL) scored the games first seven points and after
Norton answered with a 6-0 run, Julianna Baalman gave the Monarchs a 9-7 lead
at the end of the first quarter. Baalman scored 10 of her game and career-high 13
points in the first half.

The Baalman field goal and a three-point play by Hannah Garcia
helped spark the Monarchs on a 10-2 run to end the first and open the second quarter, putting TMP up
17-8.

Norton (5-6, 3-3 MCL) briefly closed within six at 18-12 but TMP outscored
Norton 11-0 to end the first half for a 29-17 halftime lead.

Norton cut the TMP lead to 10 with seven straight points to
open the second half but back-to-back field goals from sisters Graycn and
Claire Schippers put TMP back up 14 at 33-19. Brooke Koenigsman and Jaci
VonLintel each connected on a three pointer to end the third quarter putting
TMP up 39-26 through three.

Baalman added a three pointer to open the fourth quarter
before Norton was able to close within 10 but a pair of Garcia free throws gave
TMP the 46-34 victory.

Julianna Baalman led all scorers with 13 points and added
six rebounds. Jaci VonLintel added 11 points and six rebounds. 

TMP will face Trego in Saturday’s fifth place game in WaKeeney.

🏀 TMP girls beat Norton at MCL tournament

COLBY - The Hays High Indians defeated the Goodland Cowboys 51-33 in the first round of the 38th annual Orange &amp; Black Classic on Thursday evening in Colby. Chason VanDerWege and Dawson Ruder each scored 10 to lead the Indians’ offensive attack.&nbsp;

The Indians led 12-9 after the first quarter, before opening the second quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 19-9 with 4:15 remaining in the first half. The Cowboys were held without a field goal for over 12 minutes from the 5:26 mark of the first quarter to the 1:20 mark in the second period, as Hays High grew their lead to 21-11 in that stretch. The Indians would lead 21-13 at halftime.&nbsp;

Hays High would step up their defensive intensity in the third quarter after Goodland pulled within nine, 25-18 with 5:30 left in the period. The Indians would score the games next 12 points, including eight points during that stretch by Kyzer Fox. Hays High extended its lead to 20 heading into the fourth quarter, 40-20.&nbsp;

Goodland would try to make a run in the final frame, but Hays High’s lead was too much to overcome. Ruder scored 10 points to help lead the Indians, eight of which came down the stretch in the fourth frame.&nbsp;

Hays High shot 41% from the floor, while holding Goodland to 24%. The Indians held Goodland’s Manny Gonzalez in check, after going for 21 last Friday, he scored just three points against HHS.&nbsp;

The Indians will play Olathe North on Friday afternoon at 4:45pm in the winners bracket semifinal. The Eagles defeated Ulysses, 71-35.&nbsp;

Hays needed the run after the Thunder scored the first six points of the contest. The Indians held Lamar without a point for the next 5:45 while building their lead to nine.

Hays led by nine twice in the first half. Lamar was able to cut into the lead each time and pulled within four by halftime 24-20.

The Indians came out of the locker room with one of their best quarters of the year outscoring the Thunder 23-8. Hays used runs of 12-0 and 8-0 to push their advantage above 20.

Hays led 44-25 going into the fourth quarter and were never threatened on the way to a 56-34 victory.

Hays improves to 7-3, Lamar falls to 8-3. The Indians face Goodland Friday at 3:00. The Cowgirls defeated Chanute 49-17.

Manager Ramon Borrego returns for third season

The Minnesota Twins has announces its 2023 
Minor League coaching staffs, including the staff for their Double-A 
affiliate the Wichita Wind Surge.  

Ramon Borrego returns for his third season 
after leading the club to the best record in the Texas League in 2021 
(69-51) and 2022 (78-59). The club has played for the league title in 
both seasons, capturing a pair of division championships. Borrego was 
named the League’s Manager of the Year in 2021 and surpassed the 500-win
 mark in August 2022. He will be joined by Pitching Coaches Dan Urbina 
and DJ Engle, Hitting Coach Shawn Schlechter, Bench Coach Takashi 
Miyoshi, Athletic Trainer Tyler Blair and Katie Lortie, Strength and 
Conditioning Coach Jacob Needham, and Coordinator of Baseball Technology
 Chase Carder.

Borrego, who is entering his 14th 
season as a manager in the Twins organization, led his past five teams 
to the postseason, including the Surge in ’21 and ‘22 and a 2018 Florida
 State League Championship (Single-A, Ft. Myers). This year is Ramon’s 
fourth season at the Double-A level having led the Southern League 
Pensacola Blue Wahoos to a 76-63 record and to the playoff semifinals in
 2019. Originally signed by Minnesota on October 9, 1995 as an undrafted
 free agent, Borrego played in the Twins organization from 1996-2002. 
Ramon coached at the Twins Venezuelan Baseball Academy from 2004-2008, 
prior to starting his managerial career at the Twins Dominican Republic 
Baseball Academy in 2009.

Dan Urbina enters his fifth season in the 
Twins organization and returns to Wichita for his second season at the 
Double-A level. Urbina guided the Wind Surge pitching staff to the 
league’s best ERA in 2022. Previously, he was a Pitching Coach in the 
Pittsburgh Pirates organization for 18 seasons and pitched for three 
seasons in the Los Angeles Dodgers.  

DJ Engle enters his third season with the 
Twins organization after having spent the 2022 season with the Twins 
Dominican Summer League team. The Wisconsin native has a Kansas 
background spending two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at 
McPherson College after earning his master’s at Fort Hays State

Shawn Schlechter begins his fourth season in the Twins organization 
after serving as Hitting Coach for the Single-A Cedar Rapids Kernels in 
2022. Schlechter spent eight years at North Iowa Community College, 
first as a player and then as a coach. 

Takashi Miyoshi begins his sixth year with 
the Twins organization. In 2022, he was the Bench Coach with Class-A 
Fort Myers and in 2021 was the Florida Coast League Manager. Miyoshi 
managed three seasons in the Pacific Association for the Sonoma Stompers
 and was named manager of the year in 2016 and 2017 and guided the club 
to the league title in ‘16.   

Tyler Blair returns to Wichita and will be 
joined by Katie Lortie as Wind Surge Athletic Trainers; they are joined 
by Strength and Conditioning Coach, Jacob Needham. Chase Carder returns 
to the Wind Surge as the Baseball Technology Coordinator.

The Surge open their third season on April 6th in Springfield and the home opener is set for April 11th at Riverfront Stadium against the NW Arkansas Naturals.

affiliate the Wichita Wind Surge. Ramon Borrego returns for his third season 
after leading the club to the best record in the Texas League in 2021 
(69-51) and 2022 (78-59). The club has played for the league title in 
both seasons, capturing a pair of division championships. Borrego was 
named the League’s Manager of the Year in 2021 and surpassed the 500-win
 mark in August 2022. He will be joined by Pitching Coaches Dan Urbina 
and DJ Engle, Hitting Coach Shawn Schlechter, Bench Coach Takashi 
Miyoshi, Athletic Trainer Tyler Blair and Katie Lortie, Strength and 
Conditioning Coach Jacob Needham, and Coordinator of Baseball Technology
 Chase Carder.Borrego, who is entering his 14th 
season as a manager in the Twins organization, led his past five teams 
to the postseason, including the Surge in ’21 and ‘22 and a 2018 Florida
 State League Championship (Single-A, Ft. Myers). This year is Ramon’s 
fourth season at the Double-A level having led the Southern League 
Pensacola Blue Wahoos to a 76-63 record and to the playoff semifinals in
 2019. Originally signed by Minnesota on October 9, 1995 as an undrafted
 free agent, Borrego played in the Twins organization from 1996-2002. 
Ramon coached at the Twins Venezuelan Baseball Academy from 2004-2008, 
prior to starting his managerial career at the Twins Dominican Republic 
Baseball Academy in 2009.Dan Urbina enters his fifth season in the 
Twins organization and returns to Wichita for his second season at the 
Double-A level. Urbina guided the Wind Surge pitching staff to the 
league’s best ERA in 2022. Previously, he was a Pitching Coach in the 
Pittsburgh Pirates organization for 18 seasons and pitched for three 
seasons in the Los Angeles Dodgers. DJ Engle enters his third season with the 
Twins organization after having spent the 2022 season with the Twins 
Dominican Summer League team. The Wisconsin native has a Kansas 
background spending two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at 
McPherson College after earning his master’s at Fort Hays State

⚾ FHSU alum enters third season as Twins minor league pitching coach

Cedric Durr took first place in the 14U-15U age division of Keeper Wars U.S. Ink’s City Tour last month in Wichita.

That qualified the Hays goalkeeper for this summer’s U.S. Youth Soccer Keeper Wars National Championships in Orlando, Fla., for a second straight year.

The age-division winners at each City Tour competition automatically qualify for nationals, while the second- and third-place finishers are placed on a waiting list.

Durr had placed third in a City Tour event in Omaha, Neb., in November to make the waiting list. Then, with his first-place finish at the Wichita City Tour, he assured himself of a return trip to nationals.

At last year’s national championships, Durr made it all the way to the final four of the 12U-13U age division.

Knowing he would be moving up to the older age division this year after turning 13 in August, Durr has trained since the 2022 national competition with a larger ball, larger goals and on a larger field to prepare for this year’s competition.

With a trip to nationals secured, Durr — an eighth-grader at Hays Middle School — now can concentrate on preparing for his final soccer season at HMS this spring, which will begin in March.

TOPEKA , Kan. – Washburn scored the first 10 points last night vs. Fort Hays State which proved to be the difference in a 74-64 win over the Tigers at Lee Arena Wednesday night. FHSU is now 12-6 overall, 7-5 in the MIAA, while Washburn moved to 7-9 overall and 4-6 in the MIAA. Washburn hit six of its first eight shots from the field, including three 3-point field goals, to get out of the gate hot while FHSU was struggling. The Tigers missed their first five shots from the field before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/traejon-davis/6896">Traejon Davis</a>&nbsp;put in the first Tiger bucket at the 14:45 mark. The Tigers cut the Ichabod lead down to six twice, but the Ichabods closed the first half with a 7-0 run to get their lead to 13 by halftime at 37-24.

The Tigers were able to make a significant dent in the Ichabod lead early in the second half by going on a 14-6 run out of the break. They cut the lead to five one more time on an&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/elijah-nnanabu/6902">Elijah Nnanabu</a>&nbsp;jumper, making the score 45-40, before Washburn went on a quick 9-0 run over about two minutes of time to take its largest lead of 14 points. The Ichabod lead reached 14 five times in the second half before the final margin settled at 10. Both teams got off to slow starts, combining to hit six shots from the floor in the first quarter while wrapping up the first 10 minutes deadlocked at eight. The Tigers turned things around in the second quarter, knocking down more than 57 percent from the floor, while the Ichabod shooters remained ice cold.

The 2022 Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year is staying right here in Hays.

Senior Bryce Salmans announced Wednesday via social media he has committed to Fort Hays State University. In his first season at the position, the defensive standout led the WAC in sacks and tackles for loss last season, while also pulling double-duty at tight end.

“A lot of people simply ran away from his side of the field,” head coach Tony Crough told Hays Post after last season. “I think we found out when we moved him defensive end that he became one of the better ones in the state. He’s really athletic. He’s just one of those kids with some rare skills (he was a member of the track team’s 4×100-meter relay unit).”

Salmans, listed at 6-1, 225 pounds, had 57 tackles in 2022, 27 of those solo.
