LIBERAL – Hays High softball ran their win streak to eight games in a row and clinched at least a share of the Western Athletic Conference title Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep of Liberal.
Game 1: Hays 16, Liberal 1
The Indians (12-3) scored a run in all four innings of game one and plated 12 runs in the fourth on their way to a 16-1 victory.
All nine Indians recorded at least one hit and one run scored.
Riley Dreher was four-for-four with three RBI’s and three runs scored. Aubrey Thomas drove in four and finished three-for-four.
Thomas allowed just one run on four hits, in four innings and picked up the win.
Game 2: Hays 19, Liberal 11
The Indians scored seven runs in the top of the fifth to rally from down one, on their way to a 19-11 victory in game two.
The Indians jumped out to a 9-5 lead through three and a half innings only to see Liberal take their first lead of the game at 10-9, scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Hays opened the seven-run fifth with back-to-back single ahead of a Dezarae Schmidt’s RBI double that tied the game at 10.
Riley Dreher plated two in the next at bat with an RBI single giving Hays the 12-10 lead.
Morgen Berry doubled in a pair of runs and then scored on an Elle Dreiling RBI single for a 15-10 Hays lead. Dreiling scored the seventh run of the inning on a wild pitch putting the Indians up 16-10.
After Liberal got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, Hays added three more in the sixth on their way to the 19-11 victory.
Dreiling was 4-for-5 and drove in five runs. Berry and Lakyn Zimmerman both drove in three runs each.
Riley Dreher earned the win in relief for the Indians. She allowed just one run on two hits with four strikeouts in three and two-thirds innings.
The Indians will host Liberal on Friday.
