RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Great American Conference named&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6644">Kieran Brown</a>&nbsp;as the GAC/MIAA Men's Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week on Tuesday (Oct. 25) for his efforts in a pair of shutouts for Fort Hays State last week. Brown helped the Tigers knock off then No. 19 ranked Southern Nazarene 1-0 and play to a scoreless draw at Northeastern State. He recorded a total of 12 saves for the week with four against SNU and eight at NSU. He and the Tiger defense held Northeastern State scoreless to gain a draw despite the Tigers playing down a man over the final 20 minutes of the contest in Tahlequah. Brown now has five shutouts in goal this season and holds an .813 save percentage for the season. He joins the late Austin Madubuike of Newman and George Robinson of Rogers State (Co-Offensive Players of the Week), along with Scott Woods of Northeastern State (Defensive Player of the Week) as the honorees from the conference office.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State men's soccer team is receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll, released on Tuesday. The Tigers were not listed in the poll last week after falling from No. 16 two weeks ago.

Fort Hays State is 8-4-5 overall on the season and 6-2-3 in the GAC/MIAA. The Tigers defeated then No. 19-ranked Southern Nazarene 1-0 and played to a scoreless draw with Northeastern State last week. With one match left to play in the regular season, the Tigers are tied for first place in the conference with 21 points. FHSU will face the other top-ranked team in the conference for its regular season finale, 19th-ranked Rogers State. The Tigers played to a 2-2 draw with the Hillcats earlier this season in Claremore.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs were staring at an early 10-point hole, on the road and against one of the best defenses in the NFL, yet managed to not only turn things around but roar to a 44-23 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

It changed the entire complexion of the first half of the season for Kansas City.

Rather than heading into their bye tied atop the AFC West with the Los Angeles Chargers, the Chiefs improved to 5-2 and are just a half-game back of Buffalo for the best record in the conference. And a valid argument could be made that the first seven games were far more difficult than what Kansas City will face down the stretch.

Maybe hosting a fifth straight AFC title game isn't quite the longshot it seemed after a stunning loss at Indianapolis.

“We had a tough schedule going into the bye. We knew that going into the season,” said Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who threw bounced back from an early interception to throw for 423 yards and three scores against the 49ers.

Of the 10 games the Chiefs have after their bye, six are against teams that are .500 or worse, and only the Titans (4-2) are more than a game above the break-even mark. That includes the Jaguars (2-5), two games against the Broncos (2-5), a trip to Houston (1-4-1) and the Raiders (2-4) to finish the regular season.

“Obviously we lost a couple of games that we wanted to win,” Mahomes said, “but when you look back on it and you're 5-2 and you're first in the AFC West, you can't ask to be in a better position. So now we have to recalibrate, get off our feet, get our bodies back and then learn, because when we come back in this next stretch, we're going to be ready to go.”

The Chiefs could be in their best shape since training camp, too.

Defensive end Mike Danna should be fully recovered from a calf injury. Defensive back Rashad Fenton should be back from a hamstring injury. First-round pick Trent McDuffie, who has practiced the past two weeks but has not played since a hamstring injury landed the cornerback on injured reserve after the opener, also is expected back. And there's a chance the Chiefs will get backup tight end Blake Bell from IR and Lucas Niang off the physically unable to perform list.

“It's a good time (for the bye),” coach Andy Reid said. “I think it comes where we could afford to get a little bit healthier in some spots, in particular the corner spot — as long as the guys are out there and being safe. And that's kind of my primary concern right now. To get back on time. That's always important.”

The Chiefs signed JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling to help replace Tyreek Hill, and for the first time Sunday, they delivered on their promise together. Smith-Schuster proved difficult to guard over the middle, catching seven balls for 124 yards and a score, while Valdes-Scantling showed off his speed on three catches for 111 yards.

“I think it’s the hard work we’re putting in. Like I said, it’s the chemistry,” Smith-Schuster said. “Patrick, you know, getting to trust all of us and putting the ball where it needs to be for us to go out and make the play.”

The Chiefs' run defense has struggled the past three weeks, ever since shutting down Tampa Bay. The 49ers had 101 yards at nearly 5 yards per attempt. And even Christian McCaffrey, who barely had a minute to learn the playbook after his trade from Carolina, managed to gouge the Kansas City front eight times for 38 yards.

The Chiefs' pass rush, which was among the league's worst last season, sacked the 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo five times along with delivering eight quarterback hits. Chris Jones had two more sacks and forced another fumble.

Second-round pick Skyy Moore muffed another punt deep in Kansas City territory, just like he did at Indianapolis, when it led to a costly touchdown in an eventual defeat. He also made a mistake on a passing route that led to an interception.

The Chiefs reported no new injuries at San Francisco.

3 — The number of times over the first seven games the Chiefs have scored at least 40 points. The franchise record is five such games, set in 2003 and matched during the 2018 season.

The Chiefs get next week off before turning their focus to Tennessee on Nov. 6. It will be the fourth time in the first eight games that the Chiefs have played in prime time and the third such game at Arrowhead Stadium.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State defensive back&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6700">Sam Brandt</a>&nbsp;was named the MIAA Defensive Athlete of the Week on Monday (Oct. 24), presented by Mammoth Sports Construction. He was instrumental in Fort Hays State picking up a 27-14 win over Central Missouri this past Saturday in Hays. Brandt produced nine tackles, an interception, and two pass breakups in the 13-point win for the Tigers. His interception in the second quarter led to Fort Hays State taking a 10-7 lead. He picked off the pass at the UCM 35-yardline, setting up a short field for the offense to pick up its first touchdown of the game. FHSU held the lead for the remainder of the game. The nine tackles were a new career high for Brandt. Brant joined James Letcher, Jr. of Washburn (Offensive Athlete of the Week) and Kashan Griffin of Northwest Missouri State (Special Teams Athlete of the Week) as the weekly honorees from the conference office.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mahomes got off to a rough start in this Super Bowl rematch with&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/49ers/status/1584283293238710272?s=20&amp;t=5F0B698sMhxy5QcbxreI6A">his early interception</a>&nbsp;putting Kansas City (5-2) in a 10-0 hole but that once again proved to be no problem as he led the Chiefs to touchdowns on six of the next seven drives.

Mecole Hardman scored on two TD runs and&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Chiefs/status/1584287709123616768?s=20&amp;t=5F0B698sMhxy5QcbxreI6A">an 8-yard catch</a>, Justin Watson caught a 4-yard TD and JuJu Smith-Schuster finished it off with a 45 yard catch and run. Clyde Edwards-Helaire also scored on a 16-yard run.

The comeback improved Kansas City to 13-9 with Mahomes when falling behind by at least 10 points with the most memorable coming in a Super Bowl win over the 49ers (3-4) following the 2019 season.

The Niners dropped back-to-back games despite getting a boost from the addition this week of&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/49ers/status/1584281609674510337?s=20&amp;t=5F0B698sMhxy5QcbxreI6A">running back Christian McCaffrey</a>, who had 62 yards on 10 scrimmage touches in his San Francisco debut.

But San Francisco settled for three field goals and came up empty on another chance when Jimmy Garoppolo threw an interception at the goal line before Kansas City ran away with it in the second half.

The Chiefs took control with back-to-back touchdown drives to start the second half. They started the opening drive of the third quarter at the San Francisco 33 following a 48-yard kick return by Isiah Pacheco and a personal foul on Jauan Jennings. Edwards-Helaire scored three players later to make it 21-13.

Kansas City made it 28-13 when Mahomes found Watson for the TD one play after Jerick McKinnon gained 34 yards on a third-and-20 screen pass.

Mahomes then answered a TD pass from Garoppolo to George Kittle by hitting Marquez Valdes-Scantling on a 57-yard pass on third-and-11 to set up Hardman's second TD run.

Mahomes found Smith-Schuster on another third down play for the final TD.

Both teams blew some scoring chances in the final two minutes of the first half. Jaylon Moore was called for a false start for San Francisco on a field goal attempt, leading the Niners to punt.

But Skyy Moore muffed the punt and San Francisco recovered at the 12-yard line, only to give the ball right back when Garoppolo was intercepted by rookie Joshua Williams.

The Chiefs drove inside the 10 but had a touchdown negated by a chop block and then Harrison Butker missed a 39-yard field goal try. Kansas City led 14-13 at the break.

The Niners honored their alumni at the game, welcoming back the 2012 NFC championship team and presenting Bryant Young with his Hall of Fame ring. DENVER (AP) — Rookie Breece Hall ran for a 62-yard touchdown before leaving with a knee injury and the surprising New York Jets won their fourth straight by beating backup quarterback Brett Rypien and the punchless Denver Broncos 16-9 on Sunday.

Rookie cornerback Sauce Gardner broke up Rypien's fourth-down pass into the end zone to Courtland Sutton with just under 2 minutes remaining. Rypien's final heave in the closing moments fell woefully short of KJ Hamler's grasp at the goal line.

The Jets (5-2) are off to their best start since 2010, have their first four-game winning streak since 2015 and already surpassed their win total from last year when they went 4-13. New York also improved to 4-0 on the road.

Denver starting quarterback Russell Wilson was ruled out 24 hours before kickoff with a pulled hamstring, missing a game for just the fourth time in his 11-year career. But the Broncos, who are last in the league in scoring, fared no better under Rypien, who was making his second career start.

The Broncos (2-5) lost their fourth straight despite another outstanding defensive performance.

Zach Wilson was held without a touchdown for the second straight week, but he did enough to lead the Jets to the win despite his pedestrian stats: 16 for 26 for 121 yards.

Rypien's only other start was also against the Jets, a 37-28 win at MetLife Stadium in 2020, but he went 24 for 46 for 225 yards and no touchdowns and threw a crucial second-half interception in this one.

The Jets lost Hall to a left knee injury in the second quarter when he was tackled by Patrick Surtain II and Jonas Griffith after a short run. He was helped off the field and carted to the locker room.

Coach Robert Saleh said after the game the initial diagnosis for Hall is an ACL injury.

Hall finished with 72 yards on four carries, including the&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1584282202526752768">62-yard touchdown</a>&nbsp;run in which he hit a top speed of 21.87 mph according to NextGen Stats, the fastest by a ballcarrier this season.

Rypien's throw to tight end Greg Dulcich in triple coverage was easily picked off by safety&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/nyjets/status/1584312158183395331">Lamarcus Joyner</a>, whose 27-yard return to the Denver 37 set up Greg Zuerlein's 33-yard field goal that gave the Jets a 13-9 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Zuerlein's 45-yarder as the first half expired sent the Jets into halftime with a 10-9 lead.

That field goal was into the wind at the south end zone, the same direction that Brandon McManus missed an extra point following&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1584285371327983618">Latavius Murray's 2-yard TD</a>&nbsp;run.

McManus also missed a 56-yarder with the wind before making a 44-yarder to put Denver ahead 9-7.

🏈 Jets defeat Broncos for fourth straight win

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Fort Hays State women's soccer team will be the No. 4 seed in the 2022 MIAA Women's Soccer Championship Tournament. The opening round of the tournament will be on Sunday, October 30, followed by the semifinals and finals on November 4 and 6 at the campus site of the highest seed remaining following the opening round. Fort Hays State (10-1-7, 5-1-5 MIAA) tied Central Oklahoma (11-3-4, 6-3-2 MIAA) for fourth in the MIAA standings, both with 20 points (wins earn 3 points, ties earn 1). The teams played to a 1-1 tie in the regular season in Edmond, but the Tigers held the tiebreak for the higher seed by virtue of a better result against the conference's top finisher Central Missouri. FHSU tied Central Missouri, while UCO lost to Central Missouri in the regular season. Central Missouri was the regular season champion in the MIAA with 28 points, going 9-1-1 in conference play. Emporia State and Northwest Missouri State tied for second, both with 24 points. Emporia State will be the No. 2 seed due to its head-to-head win over Northwest Missouri State in the regular season. The three schools will serve as first-round hosts, along with Fort Hays State. Below is the schedule for the 2022 MIAA Tournament. The opening round of the tournament will be on Sunday, October 30, followed by the semifinals and finals on November 4 and 6 at the campus site of the highest seed remaining following the opening round. Fort Hays State (10-1-7, 5-1-5 MIAA) tied Central Oklahoma (11-3-4, 6-3-2 MIAA) for fourth in the MIAA standings, both with 20 points (wins earn 3 points, ties earn 1). The teams played to a 1-1 tie in the regular season in Edmond, but the Tigers held the tiebreak for the higher seed by virtue of a better result against the conference's top finisher Central Missouri. FHSU tied Central Missouri, while UCO lost to Central Missouri in the regular season. Central Missouri was the regular season champion in the MIAA with 28 points, going 9-1-1 in conference play. Emporia State and Northwest Missouri State tied for second, both with 24 points. Emporia State will be the No. 2 seed due to its head-to-head win over Northwest Missouri State in the regular season. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — By sitting Russell Wilson, Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett demonstrated he's in charge of the team. He also proved he's at fault for Denver's odious offense.

The Broncos are 2-5 despite holding opponents to fewer than 16.4 points per game. They're the first team in NFL history with a losing record while allowing fewer than 17 points a game through Week 7.

In what may prove the best decision of his rocky rookie season in Denver, Hackett&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/7f0a7341bb219c4377a800dc321b5f4f">held out</a>&nbsp;his $245 million quarterback against his wishes because of a strained hamstring.

Wilson wore a smile and a headset on the sideline Sunday in support of Brett Rypien, who made his second career start.

Hackett? He was dialing up a whopping 46 passes for his backup QB in a one-score game.

The result was another close loss, a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/c5b9145391a656ac68372d03a6842897">16-9 gut-wrencher</a>&nbsp;to the New York Jets that once again had fuming fans streaming to the exits in the closing minutes. This time it happened with the Broncos taking over at their 25-yard line and down seven with 4 1/2 minutes left.

The Broncos have now lost by 1, 9, 3, 3 and 7 points.

“I’m just sick of being right there,” defensive lineman Mike Purcell said. “We keep saying, ‘You know, we’re right there, it’s gonna turn around, it’s gonna turn around.’ But to be honest, (forget) that. We’ve gotta turn it around. I feel people are just waiting for it to turn around.”

Hackett said at halftime when the Broncos trailed by a point that they needed to keep running the ball. But he didn't follow his own advice: Rypien threw 28 times and handed it off seven times in the second half.

Rypien's first six snaps in the third quarter were passes and he threw on the Broncos' final 15 snaps of the game, completing seven of them.

“We wanted to come out there and run the ball and then sometimes situation determines that you go to a couple of passes to try to get some chunks and so forth,” Hackett said Monday.

“But yeah, I mean, in the end, we've got to execute better. We ended up running the ball a little bit and I think that fourth quarter we started going up-tempo. That's where a lot of the passes are starting to show up there at the end,” Hackett said.

Rypien's eight misfires in those final 15 plays included a heave into the end zone on fourth-and-3 at the Jets 25 that Sauce Gardner kept away from Courtland Sutton and another to the goal line that didn't come close to KJ Hamler on fourth-and-10 from the Jets 49 with 30 seconds remaining.

Both of those fourth-down go-for-it-all attempts continued a season-long trend of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/55df4315faf4c97ec160a5a0e655869e">head-scratching calls</a>&nbsp;by Hackett in the closing minutes or overtime.

The Broncos haven't scored a touchdown after halftime since Oct. 3 and their offense has scored just three points in the third quarter all season.

With his offense playing so poorly and his defense playing so well, Hackett is trying to keep his team from cracking.

“It starts with me getting up in front of the team and holding everybody accountable, including myself and the coaches,” Hackett said. “I always believe that where communication lacks, negativity fills the void. As long as we keep that communication open at all times, I think that will always keep everybody together so we can band together and get ourselves out of this hole and get us out of this losing streak.”

Denver’s defense, which has held six opponents under 20 points.

The halftime adjustments, which are only making things worse. In 20 drives after halftime over the last three games, the Broncos have two field goals, a missed field goal, two interceptions, three turnovers on downs and 12 punts.

Hackett said after the game that he'd look at everything to kickstart his stagnant offense when asked if he'd consider relinquishing play-calling duties. But on Monday he said, “Right now, in a short week, we're going to keep the status quo.”

Patrick Surtain II continues to show he's worthy of being called the best cornerback in the NFL.

Receiver Courtland Sutton failed to block his guy on a screen pass for the second straight week and this time it got Jerry Jeudy clobbered.

“All of them are going to miss some time," Hackett said of the three players who got hurt Sunday: OLB Baron Browning (hip), RT Cam Fleming (thigh) and RB Mike Boone (ankle).

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Max Duggan threw for 280 yards with three touchdowns and Kendre Miller ran for 153 yards and two scores as eighth-ranked TCU again rallied from a big early deficit to stay undefeated, beating No. 17 Kansas State 38-28 on Saturday night to take over sole possession of first place in the Big 12 Conference.

Duggan's 55-yard strike to Quentin Johnston late in the third quarter put the Horned Frogs (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) ahead to stay. That was their third consecutive drive to finish in the end zone.

The Frogs, with new coach Sonny Dykes, have won four consecutive games over ranked opponents. Three in a row was already a first in school history, which they accomplished a week earlier at home by overcoming a 17-point deficit to beat then-No. 8 Oklahoma State in double overtime.

Kansas State (5-2, 3-1) had jumped out to a 28-10 lead when Will Howard threw for two touchdowns and ran for another after taking over for banged-up quarterback Adrian Martinez on its second drive. Deuce Vaughn's 47-yard run for his first touchdown in five games capped the fourth consecutive TD drive for the K-State.

Howard ran for 14 yards on his first play and completed his first seven passes for 156 yards. He finished 13 of 20 for 225 yards, leaving the game briefly after hurting his shoulder on a running play late in the third quarter. Freshman Jake Rubley, the third K-State QB in the game, threw an interception on his first pass that came after TCU had gone ahead to stay.

Miller scored on a 2-yard run on fourth-and-1 on the opening drive of the second half to get TCU within 28-24. After Kansas State missed a field goal attempt, the Frogs needed only four plays before Duggan's long TD to Johnston. Rubley was stopped short on fourth-and-1 early in the fourth quarter, setting up a drive that ended with a 9-yard scoring run by Miller.

TCU led 7-0 after a 65-yard catch-and-run touchdown by Derius Davis on its first drive.

Martinez was among several Wildcats players that got dinged up in their last game two weeks ago at Iowa State. He was good to start and had a 19-yard keeper on the first play against TCU, but was in the locker room for an undisclosed issue before they had the ball again and Howard got his first game action this season.

Howard started 10 of his 15 games the past two seasons before Martinez transferred from Nebraska.

Kansas State: The Wildcats had won three in a row since a 21-7 home loss Sept. 17 to Tulane, a team that this week got ranked for the first time since 1998. The open date apparently wasn't enough to heal up the lingering issues for Martinez and the other players. Vaughn, who missed the final few minutes of the 10-9 win at Iowa State after getting leg-whipped, went to the locker room during the first half at TCU, though he did return and had some nifty runs.

TCU: The Frogs had lost three in a row to Kansas State without scoring more than 17 points in any of those games. 🏈 No. 8 TCU rallies again to beat No. 17 K-State for B12 lead

HAYS - The Fort Hays State football team used a solid running game and opportunistic defense to beat Central Missouri 27-14 Saturday afternoon at Lewis Field. The win snapped the Tigers four-game overall losing streak and six-game home losing skid. It's the Mules sixth-straight road loss.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Mules struck first when Cedric Case connected with Arkell Smith on a 40-yard touchdown pass. The Tigers answered answered with a 22-yard Manny Aguilar field goal on the next possession.&nbsp;

An interception by Sam Brandt on the Mules next possession set up an 18-yard touchdown pass from Ethan Forrester to Manny Ramsey.&nbsp;It's Ramsey's 21st career touchdown reception which is tied with Layne Bieberle for third most in program history and it gave the Tigers a 10-7 lead which they would take into the halftime locker room.

The Tigers extended their lead to 17-7 on a 1-yard shovel pass from Jack Dawson to tight end Cale Cormaney on fourth down which capped a 10-play, 51-yard drive with 6:31 to play in the third. UCM immediately responded with a six-play scoring drive which ended with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Case to tight end Corbin Gant with 4:08 in the third.

The Tigers scored 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Adrian Soto scored on a nine-yard run and Manny Ramsey added a 40-yard field goal.

Jack Dawson completed 18-of-23 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown. Ethen Forrester went 6-of-7 for 31 yards. Six different Tigers had two or more receptions led by Dawson Brown II who hauled in seven for 36 yards. Leyton Cure led with 37 receiving yards. Adrian Soto rushed for 98 yards on 18 carries.

Makel Williams led the defense with a season-high 11 tackles. Jeremiah Jackston-Trotter, who had to be carted off the field following the final play of the game, recorded a pair of sacks and three tackles for loss. Cedric Case finished 32-of-47 passing for 333 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions for UCM. Xavier Jackson led the Mules in receiving with 13 catches for 146 yards, followed by Arkell Smith with 11 catches for 160 yards. Jamarion Kolb carried the ball four times for 37 yards, while Jackson carried it nine times for 22 yards. Ayeni Kingsley IV led the Mules with nine total tackles.

TIGERS WIN THE TURNOVERS Fort Hays State entered the game with minus-12 turnover margin which was worst in the MIAA and third worst in all of Division II but the Tigers finished plus two on Saturday with interceptions from Ty Cooper and Sam Brandt.

200 RUSHING YARDS EQUALS WIN The Tigers won their 20th straight game when rushing for 200 or more yards. They ran for 201 vs. the Mules and are now 36-3 under Chris Brown with 200 or more yards on teh ground.

UP NEXT The Tigers head back on the road next week at Emporia State who rallied past Missouri Southern Saturday. Kickoff will be at 2 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Extended Jennie (16-8, 11-4 MIAA) runs helped the visitors pull away in each set. The Tigers (10-14, 5-11 MIAA) led by two early in the first set after an ace from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6666">Mykah Eshbaugh</a>&nbsp;and later tied the score at 11 on a&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6663">Morgan Christiansen</a>&nbsp;kill before UCM took the lead for good. FHSU stayed within three before the Jennies rattled off seven in a row to turn an 18-16 lead into a 25-16 first-set victory. ANDOVER - Hays High volleyball saw their season come to a close at the&nbsp; Andover Central sub-state Saturday. The 15th seeded Indians defeated the 18th seeded Salina Central Mustangs to open the day in a play-in match. They then lost to the No. 2 seeded Andover Central Jaguars 12-25, 21-25. 

The Indians finish their season with a 17-19 record.

🏐 HHS volleyball season ends

WACO, Texas (AP) — True freshman Richard Reese ran for 186 yards and two touchdowns,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=34854334">including a late game-clincher</a>&nbsp;as the Bears held on to beat Kansas 35-23 on Saturday for their first victory in nearly a month.

Baylor (4-3, 2-2 Big 12) jumped out to a 14-0 lead less than five minutes into the game matching former Top 25 teams that had both lost their previous two games, and led 28-3 at halftime.

“The mindset was start fast," Baylor coach Dave Aranda. “That's kind of a glimpse of who we can be, and we’re still just scratching and clawing and fighting to be there. ... It's elusive though"

Because the Jayhawks (5-3, 2-3) got within 28-23 when quarterback Jason&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=34854212">Bean scrambled 4 yards for a touchdown</a>&nbsp;with 6 1/2 minutes left. That ended a 93-yard drive after Baylor was stopped on fourth-and-1, and included completions of 29 and 47 yards by Bean.

On the ensuing Baylor drive, Reese had a 14-yard gain on a short pass, and a 37-yard run before his 2-yard TD run with 2 1/2 minutes left on the last of his 31 carries.

”He played physical and played with an edge," Aranda said of Reese.

Kansas is still without standout quarterback Jalon Daniels, who missed his second game in a row since injuring his right (throwing) shoulder after being hit late in the first half of a loss to TCU on Oct. 8. Bean was 16 of 27 for 232 yards and a touchdown.

Bears quarterback Blake Shapen left in the third quarter of their loss at West Virginia nine days earlier after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit. He was 17-of-26 passing for 164 yards with a touchdown and three turnovers, two interceptions and a fumble.

Shapen's second interception was inside the Jayhawks 5 with only 2 seconds left in the first half. He fumbled in the third quarter when being sacked by defensive end Jereme Robinson, who picked up the ball and returned it 49 yards to set up KU's first touchdown, a 2-yard run by Devin Neal.

The Bears were ranked 17th after a win at Iowa State on Sept. 24, but had since lost 36-25 at home Oklahoma State on Oct. 1, then had an open date before the Thursday night game at West Virginia.

Kansas, which is going into his open date, dropped out of the poll from 19th this week after its back-to-back losses to TCU and Oklahoma.

“It’s definitely gonna be beneficial for us. An extra week of film, an extra week of treatment, not really banging heads every day,” center Mike Novitsky said. "That’ll be good for us ... kind of reset a little bit, get our feet back on the ground and be ready to compete.”

<a href="http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=34853445">Reese's early 14-yard TD run</a>&nbsp;came two plays after a Kansas fumble caused and recovered by Jackie Marshall. That made it 14-0 less than a minute after Shapen's quick throw to Monaray Baldwin,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=34853320">who caught the ball behind the line and turned that into a 17-yard touchdown</a>&nbsp;on Baylor's first possession.

Kansas receiver Quentin Skinner, who fumbled twice,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=34854059">made a nifty 24-yard TD catch</a>&nbsp;in the fourth quarter.

Baylor drove 99 yards for a touchdown just before halftime after being pinned back by a punt. Receiver Jordan Nabors scored on a 10-yard sweep to make it 28-3 with 42 seconds left in the half. The Bears could have added another score when Skinner fumbled at the Kansas 14, but Shapen threw his second interception right after a drop in the end zone by tight end Ben Sims.

The Bears went for it on fourth down four times, and converted three times. Shapen was stopped short to set up the final Kansas scoring drive. Bears middle linebacker Dillon Doyle ran to convert two earlier fourth downs.

Kansas: The Jayhawks had scored 73 points in their previous two losses, but never really got much going against Baylor. They had just 76 total yards at halftime, and finished with only 288.

“We didn’t get in much of a rhythm,” coach Lance Leipold said.

Kansas had only 49 plays, while Baylor ran 83.

Baylor: The Bears have won the last 13 games in the series against Kansas, and is 11-0 overall at home in the series. ... Reese has nine rushing touchdowns, eight of them coming while scoring in each of Baylor’s four home games.

Kansas has its open date before hosting No. 11 Oklahoma State on Nov. 5.

Baylor plays at Texas Tech next Saturday night.

 </figure>WACO, Texas (AP) — True freshman Richard Reese ran for 186 yards and two touchdowns,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=34854334">including a late game-clincher</a>&nbsp;as the Bears held on to beat Kansas 35-23 on Saturday for their first victory in nearly a month.Baylor (4-3, 2-2 Big 12) jumped out to a 14-0 lead less than five minutes into the game matching former Top 25 teams that had both lost their previous two games, and led 28-3 at halftime.“The mindset was start fast," Baylor coach Dave Aranda. “That's kind of a glimpse of who we can be, and we’re still just scratching and clawing and fighting to be there. ...
