TOPEKA, Kan. - The 22nd-ranked Fort Hays State women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season by a score of 1-0 at Washburn on Friday. The Ichabods took advantage of a fast break opportunity in the first half turning it into a score and the Tigers were unable to find the equalizer. FHSU moved to 9-1-7, 4-1-5 MIAA, while Washburn improved to 11-4-2, 6-3-1 MIAA. Washburn netted its lone goal in the 21st&nbsp;minute when Viviana Soto-Herrera intercepted a Fort Hays State pass then found Khloe Schuckman on the run who put the ball past&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6693">Isabel Robben</a>&nbsp;in a one-on-one situation. Fort Hays State nearly picked up the equalizer late as Reagan Wells made a big save for Washburn in a one-on-one situation with just under five minutes to go. Fort Hays State enjoyed a 16-match unbeaten streak to open the season and was the last team remaining without a loss in the MIAA until Friday night. SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan was forced to watch a horror film this week.

Instead of a Halloween slasher movie, Shanahan rewatched his most painful loss as a head coach when he put on video of the 49ers' loss to Kansas City in the Super Bowl following the 2019 season ahead of the rematch against the Chiefs.

“I hadn’t watched it for a while until these last two days,” Shanahan said. “I don’t like watching it, but this week it wasn’t about that. I had to watch it for schematic reasons and what our history is together.”

The history of that loss will was painful and it hasn't lessened that much ahead of Sunday, when the Chiefs (4-4) will visit the 49ers (3-3).

San Francisco had a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter before Patrick Mahomes led three touchdown drives and Jimmy Garoppolo and the Niners' offense fell flat late in a 31-20 loss.

"I felt like that year we had the best team in football, but we ended up being the second best because we didn’t get it done in the end,” Shanahan said.

Mahomes was at the top of the football world back then, having won the MVP in his first season as a starter in 2018 and then the Super Bowl MVP the following season.

But since then, the Chiefs lost the Super Bowl the next year, fell in the 2021 AFC title game at home to Cincinnati and now are trying to get back to the big stage this year with an offense that has undergone lots of changes but still has Mahomes, star tight end Travis Kelce and coach Andy Reid.

“I think I just kind of thought that’s just what you did, you went out there and played football for Coach Reid and you win the MVP, and you win Super Bowls,” Mahomes said. “But now I see ... the grind and being in there every single day and not succeeding and not winning the Super Bowl. I think if I had the chance to go out there and win another one, I think I’ll appreciate it even more.”

Both teams could be getting some reinforcements with the Niners hoping to get left tackle Trent Williams (ankle), defensive end Nick Bosa (groin) and safety Jimmie Ward (hand) back from injuries.

The Chiefs could get first-round pick Trent McDuffie and linebacker Willie Gay Jr. back this week as well. McDuffie hurt his hamstring in the opener against Arizona and the cornerback returned to practice last week. Gay just concluded a four-game suspension for an off-the-field incident that happened earlier this year.

The NFL has designated Sunday as National Tight Ends day, a recently created holiday that features one of the best matchups around.

Kansas City's Kelce has long been the league's top receiving tight end, while San Francisco's George Kittle is viewed by many as the best all-around tight end based on his blocking and receiving.

“He's a great tight end. He's the best in the league right now,” Ward said of Kelce. “I always root for my guy Kittle. But as of right now, Kelce is out there catching more balls. But blocking, I’m going with Kittle all day.”

Kansas City is known for pulling out some tricks in the red zone. The Chiefs' first TD drive in the Super Bowl featured one of those when Kansas City pulled out a play from Michigan's 1948 Rose Bowl win over USC to convert a fourth down.

Kansas City lined up with four players in the backfield, who all spun in unison before a direct snap to Darrell Williams led to the conversion on fourth-and-1.

“It was very creative,” linebacker Dre Greenlaw said. “We’ll be more alert and know what we’re getting from Andy. We’ve got to be on our P’s and Q’s.”

Reid has a soft spot for San Francisco defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans. It was Reid that acquired him from Houston in a 2012 trade in an attempt to upgrade the Eagles' defense. Ryans wound up leading the team with 113 tackles, though they still finished 4-12 and Reid was ultimately fired.

“Phenomenal person, absolutely brilliant as a player, just understanding the game,” Reid said. “I’m very happy for him. He’s one of those guys you pull for unless you’re playing against him.”

The Niners are honoring another of their teams that fell just short at the end with a ceremony this weekend. San Francisco is welcoming back members of the 2012 team that lost in the Super Bowl to Baltimore.

Coach Jim Harbaugh is expected back for the first time since his “mutual parting” following the 2014 season that sent him back to college at Michigan. It's uncertain whether quarterback Colin Kaepernick will be among the players on hand.

One of those teams will be alone atop the Big 12 standings after they meet Saturday night.

Cornerback Josh Newton said the undefeated and eighth-ranked Horned Frogs (6-0, 3-0 Big 12 Conference) still haven't played their best game, and he is fully confident all of his teammates agree even after winning three consecutive games against Top 25 opponents for the first time in school history.

“Starting fast, playing four quarters, our type of football," Newton said about what they need to do.

Running back Deuce Vaughn believes Kansas State (5-1, 3-0), coming off its open date and with a three-game winning streak, hasn't yet played a complete game, especially on offense.

“That’s what we’re excited about ... understanding that we haven’t touched the peak of our performance that we can have," Vaughn said.

TCU has won consecutive October games matching undefeated teams, beating Kansas and then&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-oklahoma-max-duggan-texas-christian-horned-frogs-ad4dcdbc9502b8f3bf4f88a43ae4b062">overcoming a two-touchdown deficit in the fourth quarter last week to beat No. 11 Oklahoma State</a>&nbsp;in double overtime.

“It’s been good to see us be able to overcome adversity," Dykes said. “The one thing for me that’s been really impressive is just our guys' ability to focus on the task at hand. They’ve been really good about doing that, not getting ahead of themselves, not talking about, you know, all these things they want to accomplish."

It’s been really cool to watch the last three weeks us survive and attack the adversity that we faced.”

Quarterback Max Duggan and the Frogs have lost their last three games against K-State and were held to 17 points or fewer each time.

Kansas State defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah had a career-high four sacks against TCU last season. The 6-foot-4, 255-pound junior is tied for the national lead with 1.08 sacks per game (6 1/2 total). The Frogs have allowed only three sacks in Big 12 play.

TCU's overtime touchdowns against Oklahoma State were a 25-yard catch by Quentin Johnston and a game-ending 2-yard run by Kendre Miller.

After only 12 catches for 114 yards the first four games, Johnston has 22 catches for 386 yards in the last two weeks. Dykes said this week that the 6-foot-4 receiver was banged up a bit early in the season.

“We were trying to play him enough to get him experience and try to get him into a routine," Dykes said.

Miller is a bruising back with more than 100 yards in three of the past four games. He has a rushing TD in every game this season, and a seven-game overall streak tied for the second-longest in school history behind LaDainian Tomlinson’s 15 in a row that end in 2000.

“He’s a raging bull when he’s running the ball,” Newton said of Miller.

Even with dynamo running back Vaughn and dual-threat transfer Adrian Martinez, the only QB/RB duo in the country to both have more than 500 yards rushing, the Wildcats are ninth in the Big 12, averaging 28.7 points and 403 total yards a game.

Martinez has 546 yards rushing with nine TDs, while Vaughn has 661 yards and three TDs.

The extra time between games helped Vaughn, who gingerly walked off late in the fourth quarter against Iowa State and didn’t return. Vaughn said he got leg-whipped while blocking.

“That’s football. So just got to get the body back healthy, ready to go for the next one,” he said this week.

Kansas State’s defense has allowed only 16.7 points and 355 total yards per game, while also forcing nine interceptions.

FHSU improved to 8-4-4, 6-2-2 GAC/MIAA while SNU fell to 7-5-3, 5-2-2 GAC/MIAA. In the first half, both squads made attempts to score early but couldn't quite piece anything together. At the end of the first half, the Crimson Storm had four shots and the Tigers had three with each squad putting one on target. a win. The Indians defeated the Wichita Classical School 3-1 to finish with a 10-5-1 record.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Most teams around the NFL are getting banged up and losing players at about this point in the season.

The Kansas City Chiefs are getting ready to welcome a whole bunch back.

Tops on the list is first-round pick Trent McDuffie, who earned the start at cornerback for Week 1 but who promptly hurt his hamstring in a win in Arizona. McDuffie was placed on injured reserve and returned to practice last week, starting a window in which the Chiefs must either activate him or place him on the season-ending IR list.

He could be activated as soon as Sunday against San Francisco.

McDuffie could be joined on the field by starting linebacker Willie Gay Jr., who has spent the past week shaking off the rust following a four-game suspension for an off-the-field incident that occurred earlier this year.

It all gives Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo his most complete bunch since breaking training camp.

“Both of them looked good to me,” Spagnuolo said Thursday. “I go off what (Chiefs trainer) Rick Burkholder says in Trent's case, and Willie is just a ball of energy. He can be at 100 miles an hour, no matter what. He's rusty — he hasn't been here in a month. We have to shake that off. But we have to get them out there and get rolling.”

The Chiefs (4-2) have made do with fill-ins during a tough early part of the schedule.

At cornerback, where Rashad Fenton is nursing a hamstring injury, the Chiefs have relied on two other rookies in Jaylen Watson and Joshua Williams. And if you appreciate learning the ropes in a trial-by-fire manner, those two have faced the following QBs: Kyler Murray, Justin Herbert, Matt Ryan, Tom Brady, Derek Carr and Josh Allen.

They've certainly taken their lumps. Williams in particular had a tough night against Allen, getting burned for a couple of touchdowns in a 24-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills. But they've also gained valuable experience, and that should prove to be beneficial regardless of whether McDuffie returns this week or following Kansas City's bye.

In fact, given how little McDuffie has played this season, you could say Spagnuolo knows more about his other rookies.

“I do think he's a good football player. I don't think we would have inserted him (as a starter) if he wasn't,” Spagnuolo said. “You never know how a young guy is going to react to injury. He's fully in tune, though. He doesn't have to be at Saturday night meetings, but he wanted to be at every one. He would drive himself over. That's the kind of guys he is.”

The kind of player Gay is: fast and aggressive. And while Darius Harris filled in admirably at linebacker over the past month, the reality is Gay was in the starting lineup over him for a reason. He had 16 tackles in just the first two games.

“He brings a lot of speed,” Spagnuolo said, “but I will say this: I thought Darius did a nice job. Everybody has their strengths and their weaknesses, and Darius brought his assets, how hard he plays and how cerebral he plays. And with Willie, you've seen Willie — he runs around and makes explosive plays.”

Even without McDuffie and Gay, the Chiefs have been a middle-of-the-pack defense, despite facing some of the league's top offenses; holding the Bills to 24 points was quite a feat. But the hope is that getting two of their better players back on the field will allow the Chiefs to become one of the league's best during the second half of the season.

“I think the guys are playing good,” Spagnuolo said, “but I hope we're getting better at the end.”

🏈Chiefs set to welcome back 2 key defensive players vs 49ers

The Hays Soccer Club’s U12 Thunder went 3-1 at the Nightmare on 17th&nbsp;Street tournament last weekend in Topeka. This tournament has a Halloween theme and encourages teams to dress in costume. Hays Thunder decided to play the first two games as the Hays Minions coached by Gru (pictured above). 

The Thunder started round-robin play Saturday against SJSC Cyclones 2011 from Saint Joseph, Mo. This was a rematch from Thunder’s first tournament in KC that ended in a 4-2 victory. After an initial close first period, Thunder struck first with a goal from Joey Fisher followed by a second goal from Mason Zimmerman. Expecting a close match Thunder kept the pressure up and picked up another goal from Fisher before the Cyclones answered with a goal of their own to finish the first period. The second period was all Thunder with consecutive goals from Dalton&nbsp;Herrman, Noah&nbsp;DeBay and Emery Zimmerman. Thunder finished the match with another goal from&nbsp;Herrman&nbsp;before the Cyclones could answer with their own goal to finish the match 7-2. The match saw shots on goal from Austin&nbsp;Liles(2), Dalton&nbsp;Herrman(6), Emery Zimmerman(3), Joey Fisher(7), Jace&nbsp;Herbers(1), Mason Zimmerman(1), Noah&nbsp;DeBey(1), and Preston Dinkel(2). Logan Cunningham finished with 8 saves with Noah&nbsp;DeBey&nbsp;recording a save in the goal area preventing a Cyclones score.

The second match was another rematch from an earlier KC tournament facing Topeka Soccer Club’s 2011B White Chelsea team. Another close match was expected, and the Thunder pressed early to pick up a goal by Col Lonsdale off a Joey Fisher assist. The match was hard fought with both sides showing aggressive play. Thunder added another goal from Fisher with an assist by Emery Zimmerman to go up 2-0. A hard challenge and tough call resulted in a red card and forced the Thunder to play a man down for the remainder of the game. Just before the end of the first period, Chelsea found the back of the net bringing the score to 2-1. The second period began with another goal from Chelsea to tie the game at 2-2. The boys battled back and made that early second-period Chelsea goal their last with incredible defensive play and clutch saves by keeper Jace&nbsp;Herbers. Midway through the second period Joey Fisher scored Thunder’s 3rd&nbsp;goal of the match to take the lead. The defensive battle continued through the rest of the match securing a Thunder win. The match ended with shots on goal from Austin&nbsp;Liles(3), Col Lonsdale(1), Dalton&nbsp;Herrman(2), Joey Fisher(3), Logan Cunningham(2), and Mason Zimmerman(1). Keeper Jace&nbsp;Herbers&nbsp;recorded 13 saves.

Sunday morning Thunder faced&nbsp;PiperSC&nbsp;2011/12 Purple from Kansas City, KS. The match started with two quick goals from Thunder by Dalton&nbsp;Herrman&nbsp;and Joey Fisher.&nbsp;PiperSCanswered with a goal of their own before Fisher found the back of the net for a second time ending the first period 3-1. The second period started with a Fisher goal from an Austin Liles assist bringing their lead to 4-1. From there Thunder’s defense started to breakdown with&nbsp;PiperSC&nbsp;quickly scoring 3 goals to tie the match halfway through the second period. After a defensive battle to finish out the match&nbsp;PiperSC&nbsp;scored towards the end of the second period to take the match 5-4. The match saw shots on goal from Austin&nbsp;Liles(1), Dalton&nbsp;Herrman(5), Joey Fisher(6), and Mason Zimmerman(1). Logan Cunningham recorded 10 saves throughout the match.&nbsp;

For the final game in the round-robin tournament Thunder needed to win to have a chance to claim the title. To stay in the running for first place they need to win by at least a 4-goal margin for a potential tiebreaker. Thunder faced a well-coached Danger FC U12 Premier from Junction City, KS. With a short break between games and the team back to full strength, the boys showed up ready to play and jumped out to a quick 1-0 with a Joey Fisher goal from a Dalton&nbsp;Herrmanassist. Fisher followed up with another goal bringing the score to 2-0 before Preston Dinkel and Logan Cunningham joined the action with a goal each for Thunder to jump to a 4-0 lead. Danger closed out the first period with a goal of their own preventing a shutout (another potential tiebreaker). Quick into the second period Dalton&nbsp;Herrman&nbsp;and Austin Liles found the back of the net bringing Thunder’s&nbsp;lead&nbsp;to 6-1 securing the 4-goal margin the team needed. Thunder wasn’t done yet with&nbsp;Herrman&nbsp;finding the back of the net again and Jace&nbsp;Herbers&nbsp;picking up the final goal ending the match 8-1. The match saw shots on goal from Austin&nbsp;Liles(2), Col Lonsdale(1), Dalton&nbsp;Herrman(5), Emery Zimmerman(5), Joey Fisher(4), Jace&nbsp;Herbers(1), Logan Cunningham(3), Mason Zimmerman(1), Nick&nbsp;Penka(2), and Preston Dinkel(2). Jace&nbsp;Herbersrecorded 7 saves in the match with Joey Fisher recording 1 after taking over keeper duties late in the second period.

Both Thunder and Topeka Soccer Club’s Chelsea ended round-robin play with a 3-1 record with Thunder having the tiebreaker by beating Chelsea head-to-head securing Thunder’s third gold trophy for the season. Thunder finished their season 14-4-1 through 5 tournaments. They took home first-place finishes at the Wichita Open (Wichita), Fall Kickoff Challenge (Overland Park), and Nightmare on 17th&nbsp;Street (Topeka) tournaments and a second-place finish at the Challenger Sports Invitational (Overland Park). The Thunder will be back in action for the Spring soccer season.&nbsp;

With a short break between games and the team back to full strength, the boys showed up ready to play and jumped out to a quick 1-0 with a Joey Fisher goal from a Dalton&nbsp;Herrmanassist. Fisher followed up with another goal bringing the score to 2-0 before Preston Dinkel and Logan Cunningham joined the action with a goal each for Thunder to jump to a 4-0 lead. Danger closed out the first period with a goal of their own preventing a shutout (another potential tiebreaker). Quick into the second period Dalton&nbsp;Herrman&nbsp;and Austin Liles found the back of the net bringing Thunder’s&nbsp;lead&nbsp;to 6-1 securing the 4-goal margin the team needed. Thunder wasn’t done yet with&nbsp;Herrman&nbsp;finding the back of the net again and Jace&nbsp;Herbers&nbsp;picking up the final goal ending the match 8-1. Jace&nbsp;Herbersrecorded 7 saves in the match with Joey Fisher recording 1 after taking over keeper duties late in the second period.Both Thunder and Topeka Soccer Club’s Chelsea ended round-robin play with a 3-1 record with Thunder having the tiebreaker by beating Chelsea head-to-head securing Thunder’s third gold trophy for the season. Thunder finished their season 14-4-1 through 5 tournaments. They took home first-place finishes at the Wichita Open (Wichita), Fall Kickoff Challenge (Overland Park), and Nightmare on 17th&nbsp;Street (Topeka) tournaments and a second-place finish at the Challenger Sports Invitational (Overland Park). INDIANAPOLIS – The Fort Hays State women's soccer team is among the 10 teams listed in the first release of NCAA Region Rankings on Wednesday. For the first release of region rankings, the NCAA is listing its top 10 teams by region alphabetically currently being considered for selection to the NCAA Tournament. The list of 10 teams can change week to week as more results affect the formulas for consideration. Fort Hays State is in good shape at this point, remaining unbeaten through 16 games this season at 9-0-7 overall. According to the report for the Central Region located at the bottom of the region rankings page on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/soccer-women/d2/regional-rankings">NCAA.com</a>, Fort Hays State has the fifth-best In-Region RPI and fourth-best Division II Performance Indicator value in the Central Region. Central Missouri owns the highest in-region RPI and performance indicator. Fort Hays State is seeking its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since the 2016 season, when it made a run all the way to the Central Region Final (Round of 16). Eight teams from the Central Region will be selected to compete in the Central Regional of the NCAA Tournament following the conclusion of conference tournaments. The region consists of teams from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, and Great American Conference. Champions from each of the three conference tournaments within the region will receive automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament. HESSTON -&nbsp;The Hays High girls' golfers shot a final-round 349 and finished in fifth place at the 5A State Tournament at the Hesston Golf Course. Day one leader Kapuan Mt. Carmel won the team title by 25 shots over Emporia. 

The Indians had three finish in the top-20. Senior Katie Dinkel rebounded after an opening round 87 and shot a 7-over-par 78 on Tuesday and tied for ninth at 165. Junior Abbie Norris, who shot an 81 on Monday, closed with a 93 Tuesday and tied for 14th place. Sophomore Jaycee Oakley also shot a 93 Tuesday and tied for 18th.

Maize sophomore Kinslea Jones had rounds of 70 and 73 and won the individual title with a 143, two shots ahead of Kapaun Mt. Carmel's Meg Tilma.

⛳ Lee and North lead Tiger women at Midwest Fall Classic

NEWTON, Kan. – The Fort Hays State men's golf team finished seventh at the Newman Invitational, held at Sand Creek Station Golf Course. Jackson Rader&nbsp;turned in a top-5 performance by tying for fourth individually at 5-over par overall to lead the Tigers. Rader carded 10 birdies over three rounds, posting rounds of 75, 73, and 73 at the par-72 course for a total of 221. He led the tournament in par-5 scoring, scoring 6-under par on the four par-5 holes on the course over three rounds. He tied for the second-most birdies in the tournament only behind Bennett Baldwin of Central Oklahoma with 12, who finished second individually at even par.

Maddux Mills&nbsp;tied for 35th&nbsp;individually with a total of 232. He shot rounds of 78, 74, and 80 and posted six birdies for the tournament. Tanner Copeland tied for 43rd&nbsp;at 234, shooting rounds of 78, 75, and 81 with seven birdies to his credit. Bryce Cowan and Parker Krob&nbsp;tied for 49th. Cowan reached his total of 236 with rounds of 89, 75, and then an even-par 72, while Krob shot rounds of 78, 77, and 81. Cowan had six birdies, all within the last two rounds of the tournament, while Krob had five throughout the tournament. The Tigers shot 912 as a team. A 297 in the second round was their lowest of the tournament, bookended by 309 and 306. Concordia-St. Paul won the tournament at 893. Missouri Southern was second with 896 and Northeastern State was third at 898. Jackson Cole of Arkansas Tech won the tournament individually at 1-under par overall. After going 1-over par in the first round, he shot a pair of 1-under rounds to claim the title. The FHSU Men finish the fall portion of their season at the Tulsa Cup next week in Tulsa, Okla. The tournament will take place at The Club at Indian Springs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He shot rounds of 78, 74, and 80 and posted six birdies for the tournament. Tanner Copeland tied for 43rd&nbsp;at 234, shooting rounds of 78, 75, and 81 with seven birdies to his credit. Bryce Cowan and Parker Krob&nbsp;tied for 49th. Cowan reached his total of 236 with rounds of 89, 75, and then an even-par 72, while Krob shot rounds of 78, 77, and 81. Cowan had six birdies, all within the last two rounds of the tournament, while Krob had five throughout the tournament. The Tigers shot 912 as a team. A 297 in the second round was their lowest of the tournament, bookended by 309 and 306. Concordia-St. Paul won the tournament at 893. Missouri Southern was second with 896 and Northeastern State was third at 898. Jackson Cole of Arkansas Tech won the tournament individually at 1-under par overall. After going 1-over par in the first round, he shot a pair of 1-under rounds to claim the title. The FHSU Men finish the fall portion of their season at the Tulsa Cup next week in Tulsa, Okla. The tournament will take place at The Club at Indian Springs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State women's soccer team is among the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll for the second week in a row, jumping up one spot to No. 22 in the latest edition of the poll released on Tuesday.

Fort Hays State decimated Missouri Southern 5-0 on Friday before playing to a 1-1 draw with No. 5 ranked Central Missouri in Hays. The Tigers remain unbeaten on the season at 9-0-7 overall and are currently hold a conference record of 4-0-5.

FHSU and UCM remain as the only teams representing the MIAA in the poll at No. 22 and No. 5 respectively. Central Oklahoma continues to receive votes in the poll.

Madden helped the No. 23 ranked Tigers to a 5-0 win over Missouri Southern before playing to a 1-1 tie with No. 5 ranked Central Missouri to remain unbeaten this season, now at 9-0-7 overall and 4-0-5 in the MIAA. In the win over Missouri Southern, Madden scored her second goal of the season and played all 90 minutes. She helped FHSU secure its 10th shutout this year by limiting MSSU to just six shots and one shot on goal. Madden then helped the Tigers limit Central Missouri to just eight shots in a draw, playing the entire 90 minutes once again. The Tiger captain has played all 1,440 minutes for the Tigers this season at center back and has helped the Tigers allow the fewest goals among MIAA teams this season (7). Madden joins Amaya Grace of (Offensive Athlete of the Week) and Caroline Faulkner (Goalkeeper of the Week), both of Central Oklahoma, as the weekly honorees from the conference office.&nbsp;&nbsp;
