🏀 Several area teams in latest KBCA rankings

NEW ORLEANS - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team is ranked 17th in the first USTFCCCA NCAA Division II rating index, released Tuesday by the coaches association.

The Tigers have four student-athletes that rank in the top 10 nationally, including long distance runner Grant Bradley (3k in 8:11.02), high jumper Dayton Williams&nbsp;(6-11.5 feet), pole vaulter Jacob Clark&nbsp;(16-8.75 feet) and multi-event runner Nolan Churchman&nbsp;(5326 points in heptathlon).&nbsp;The Tiger men currently rank fourth in the central region and sixth in the MIAA rankings. Event squad rankings are scheduled to begin next week, with conference rankings starting the following week.

Next up for the Tiger track and field teams is a trip to Kearney, Neb. for the Charlie Foster Classic this Friday (Jan. 26).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Following a pair of seventh place finishes at the Mid-Continent League tournament the TMP-Marian Monarchs return home Tuesday night for a non-league contest against the Great Bend Panthers.

Both TMP teams are 5-8 on the season while the Great Bend girls are 9-3 and the Panther boys are 8-4.

Tipoff of the girls game is set for 6:00 p.m. with the boys to follow at Al Billinger Fieldhouse. Live coverage includes The TMP-Marian Sports Network and Eagle Radio.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Johnny Furphy sent his parents back home to Australia with quite the lasting impression of their son in Allen Fieldhouse.

The freshman guard had career-highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds, hitting a key 3-pointer down the stretch, and helped No. 7 Kansas overcome a sluggish night from the rest of its starters in a 74-69 victory over Cincinnati on Monday night.

Kevin McCullar Jr. added 20 points despite struggling with his shot, KJ Adams Jr. had 11 points and Hunter Dickinson overcame some foul trouble to score 10 for the Jayhawks (16-3, 4-2), who bounced back nicely from a road loss at West Virginia.

“This was their first home game,” Furphy said of his parents, “so I was happy they could experience that. I've been telling them a lot about Allen Fieldhouse. I'm happy they got to see a win.”

The cold-shooting Bearcats (13-6, 2-4), wrapping up a stretch of six straight against ranked teams, got within 64-57 when Day Day Thomas ended their 6-plus minute field-goal drought with just over 2 1/2 minutes to play. But at the other end, Furphy hit his 3-pointer from the wing as the shot clock expired, and the Jayhawks were able to hang on from there.

“You had some good looks, some blown possessions, and you're still right there. That's the hard part to swallow,” said Cincinnati coach Will Wade, whose team had 16 turnovers and went 3 for 18 from the 3-point arc.

Dan Skillings Jr. led the Bearcats with 16 points. Leading scorer Viktor Lakhin was held to seven on 1-for-6 shooting.

The Bearcats and Jayhawks were meeting for the first time since a top-five showdown in 1996, and they were playing at Allen Fieldhouse for the first time since 1967, when Kansas exacted a bit of revenge for a home loss five years earlier.

Like so many teams unaccustomed to the Phog, Cincinnati was rattled in the opening minutes. Kansas sprinted out to a 12-point lead and Wade was forced to call timeout to keep the game from getting away from his Bearcats.

Cincinnati slowly drew even, though, and briefly took the lead before going to halftime 35-all.

“We have a resilient bunch,” Wade said. “We don't pout. We don't put our heads down.”

McCullar continued to struggle from the field, where he finished 5 for 17, and Dickinson had to sit long stretches after picking up his fourth foul with more than 10 minutes to go. But the Bearcats continued to be bitterly cold from the 3-point arc, where Simas Lukosius was 0 for 6 and nobody else was a whole lot better, and that prevented them from ever taking control.

That came back to haunt Cincinnati when the Jayhawks pulled away in the closing minutes.

“They got a goose egg other than Skillings shooting the ball from the arc, and those were all in the first half,” Jayhawks coach Bill Self said. “We were probably lucky on some of them, but we did a decent job defensively, and that was a big part of the game.”

Kansas retired the No. 33 jersey of Bill “Skinny” Johnson during a halftime ceremony. He was an All-American in 1933 under coach Phog Allen, and led the Jayhawks to three consecutive conference titles. Johnson was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1977, three years before his death.

Kansas visits No. 23 Iowa State on Saturday.

MANHEIM, Pa. – Tereus Henry&nbsp;of Fort Hays State was ranked No. 10 at 197 pounds in the latest NWCA Division II National Poll released on Monday. Henry was the No. 3 ranked wrestler at his respective weight in the preseason poll. He has a record of 20-6 so far this season and is currently tied for eighth in tech falls nationally with eight on the season.

Henry's individual ranking puts Fort Hays State among the list of teams receiving votes for the poll.&nbsp;&nbsp;

With signing day 2 1/2 weeks away the Fort Hays State football team received a big commitment from a local product.

Hays High running back Malik Bah announced through social media that he intends to sign with the Tigers.

Malik Bah, who was selected to play in this summer's Kansas Shrine Bowl, ended his HHS career with 3,546 rushing yards on 427 carries, both Hays High records. Bah rushed for 1,279 yards on 189 carries. The 189 carries set a single season record.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Travis Kelce caught two touchdown passes from Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs advanced to their sixth straight AFC championship game with a 27-24 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night.

Isiah Pacheco scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 4-yard run 40 seconds into the fourth quarter in a game during which the teams traded leads five times. The Chiefs clinched the win by running out the clock after Buffalo’s Tyler Bass was wide right on a 44-yard field goal attempt with 1:43 remaining.

The defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs (13-6) move on to Baltimore to face Lamar Jackson and the conference’s top-seeded Ravens, who beat Houston 34-10 on Saturday.

Kansas City is 0-1 in the playoffs against the Ravens, following a 30-7 loss in the 2010 wild-card round. Baltimore defeated Kansas City 36-35 in their most recent regular-season matchup in Week 2 of the 2021 season.

“There’s no weakness there,” Mahomes said of the Ravens. "It’s going to take our best effort. Defense, offense, special teams, they do it all. It’s always a great challenge and that stadium’s going to be rocking, so we’re excited for the challenge.”

Buffalo and Kansas City traded unlikely turnovers, with the Bills (12-7) failing to convert on a fake punt when Damar Hamlin was stopped for 2 yards on a fourth-and-five at Buffalo’s 32. The Chiefs then gave the ball right back two plays later when Mecole Hardman lost a fumble into the end zone for a touchback.

The game wasn’t decided until the Bills' final drive stalled at the Chiefs 26 when Allen threw a pair of incompletions, leading to Bass’ miss. It came a week after he had a field-goal attempt blocked and also missed from 27 yards in a 31-17 win over Pittsburgh.

“I wish he wouldn’t have been put in that situation,” Allen said. “You win as a team, you lose as a team. One play doesn’t define a game.”

Kansas City has never lost in the divisional round since Mahomes took over as starter in 2018, and the Chiefs have now won five consecutive playoff games since a 27-24 overtime loss to Cincinnati in the AFC championship game during the 2021 season.

Mahomes, a two-time NFL MVP, can also check off another first on his record by winning his first road start in the playoffs — not counting Super Bowls — and improving his postseason mark to 13-3.

“First of all, this is a great environment, man," Mahomes said of Buffalo. “It really is. We did hear it all week, man, about playing a road game, and we’re here to prove a point and show that we can play anywhere.”

The Bills had their third consecutive postseason end in the divisional round, following losses to Cincinnati last year and the Chiefs in 2021. And the Chiefs ended Buffalo’s season for the third time in four years, including a 38-24 decision at Kansas City in the AFC championship game in the 2020 season.

It was another disappointing finish for a Bills team that won its fourth consecutive AFC East title, and was on a six-game roll since a 20-17 win at Kansas City on Dec. 10.

Mahomes finished 17 of 23 for 215 yards and the two TD passes to Kelce were the 15th and 16th times they've combined for scores in the playoffs, one more than Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski for the NFL record for most for a quarterback-receiver combination.

Kelce&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/taylor-swift-chiefs-bills-nfl-playoffs-1daf77f0f922ac494bbf2bd2c84144d7">celebrated his first touchdown catch</a>&nbsp;— a 22-yarder — by making a heart gesture with his hands and directed it at girlfriend and pop music superstar Taylor Swift, who was sitting in a suite at the opposite end of the field.

Also on hand was Kelce’s brother, Jason, the Eagles center who told teammates in confidence after Philadelphia’s playoff loss to Tampa Bay last week that he’s retiring after 13 seasons. Jason Kelce celebrated the touchdown shirtless while holding a can of beer.

Buffalo’s Josh Allen finished 26 of 39 for 186 yards and a touchdown, and also ran for two scores. Allen finished with a team-leading 72 yards rushing to increase his career playoff total to 563, the second most among NFL quarterbacks in league history and trailing only Steve Young (594).

Buffalo scored on four of its first five possessions, with Allen’s 13-yard TD pass to Khalil Shakir putting the Bills up 24-20 with 3:23 left in the third quarter.

The Chiefs scored on five of their first six possessions, including a kneeldown to end the first half. Pacheco’s touchdown capped an eight-play 75-yard drive.

The game-time temperature was 26 Fahrenheit (minus-3 Celsius), with gusting winds making it feel like 15F (minus-9C), but nothing like what the two teams faced in their respective playoff openers.

The Chiefs’ 26-7 home win over Miami was the NFL’s fourth-coldest game, with a game-time temperature at minus-4F (minus-20C). Buffalo’s 31-17 win over Pittsburgh on Monday featured a temperature of 17F (minus-8C), and 12 points colder with the wind chill.

KEARNEY, Neb. – Fort Hays State scored the first 10 points and never trailed, beating Nebraska-Kearney 57-49 Saturday afternoon at the Health and Sports Center.

The Tigers improved to 13-4 overall and 8-3 in the MIAA while the Lopers lost their eighth-straight conference game and fell to 5-11 overall and 2-9 in the MIAA.

After FHSU jumped out to the 10-0 lead the Lopers answered with a 10-2 run to pull within 12-10. The Tigers scored the next seven. Bjarni Jonsson and Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Tigers a 12-point lead, but the Lopers hit a 3-point field goal just before the first half buzzer to pull within 29-20 at the halftime.

UNK hit a 3-point field goal to get within six and would outscore the Tigers 18-11 over the first eight minutes of the second half and got within 40-38 with 12:10 to play.

Jahiem Holden's 3-point field goal and Hammeke's 2-pointer gave the Tigers a seven-point cushion near the midway mark of the second half. An 8-0 Tiger run pushed their lead to 13 and ultimately snap the hopes of a Loper comeback.

After an Elijah Nnanabu basket started the run, Hammeke created a steal and raced to the other end for a dunk. Jonsson followed that with a steal and got the ball ahead to Shaun Riley&nbsp;for another fast-break dunk. Riley then capped the run with an offensive rebound stick back with 4:40 to play. The Tigers coasted to victory from that point.&nbsp;&nbsp;

FHSU struggled to just 36.1 percent shooting from the field overall and just 22.7 percent beyond the 3-point line, but managed to hold UNK to 35.1 percent overall. The Tigers held a 9-point advantage in points off turnovers and a 6-point advantage at the free-throw line. Despite their struggles, the Tigers did a good job taking care of the ball with just six turnovers to UNK's 10.

Hammeke led the Tigers with 15 points, Nnanabu added 11. Traejon Davis&nbsp;tied for the team lead in rebounds with Riley, each with eight. 

D'Aundre Samuels led UNK with 14 points, followed by Damiri Lindo with 11.

The Tigers held an opponent under 50 points for the seventh time this year and remain unbeaten when doing so. FHSU continues to lead NCAA Division II in scoring defense, allowing 58.2 points per game.

At the midway point of MIAA play, Northwest Missouri State (9-2) continues to hold its one-game lead on Fort Hays State, Missouri Western, and Washburn in the standings.

Fort Hays State is back at home next week to host Washburn (Thur. Jan. 25) and Emporia State in the only regular season meetings between the teams.

🏀 Tiger men grind out road win at Nebraska-Kearney

KEARNEY, Neb. - In a game that saw nine ties and 18 lead changes, the 20th-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team came away with a 70-68 win over Nebraska-Kearney Saturday afternoon at the Health and Sports Center.

Brooke Loewe hit two free throws with 22 seconds to play to give the Tigers (14-3, 8-3 MIAA) a one-point lead. Fort Hays State then got a&nbsp;defensive stop to secure the win. UNK (12-5, 6-5 MIAA) lost at home for only the second time this season and has lost three-straight overall.

FHSU's biggest lead was four midway through the first quarter. The Lopers led by eight with 7:13 to play in the second quarter but the Tigers were able to close the gap to three at halftime.

Sydney Golladay hit a 3-pointer to open the third quarter to tie the game at 39-39. It was the first of seven ties in the second half. Nebraska-Kearney scored five-straight points midway through the quarter before Megan Earney scored five-straight to tie the game at 48-48. Neither team would lead by more than one possession the rest of the way.

Fort Hays State limited UNK to 5-of-13 shooting in the fourth quarter after the7 Lopers hit 48.9 percent (23-of-47) over the first three stanzas. Jessie Sallach&nbsp;helped the Tigers close within 59-58 with a stick-back layup early in the frame before Ruddle gave the Tigers the lead with a driving layup.

The Lopers answered two minutes later to go back on top before Hollenbeck dropped in a stick-back layup to put the Tigers up with 3:58 to play, 62-63. The teams again traded buckets, with UNK hitting a jumper and Katie Wagner&nbsp;following with a driving layup.

Nebraska-Kearney again took the lead with two minutes to go before Hollenbeck put the Tigers up by two with a traditional 3-point play, 67-65. The Lopers responded with a 3-pointer as the shot clock was expiring, giving the home team a 68-67 lead with 69 seconds to play.

Fort Hays State got a stop on defense after a turnover before Loewe drew a foul with 22 seconds to go. The sophomore was perfect on both free throws, putting the Tigers up by one, 69-68.

With two fouls to give before the bonus, the Tigers forced the Lopers to run the clock down inside 10 seconds without taking a shot. UNK finally got a look with four seconds left, but a baseline runner bounced off the front of the rim and into the hands of Golladay. The point guard was then fouled with 0.8 seconds to go. The Fremont, Neb. native hit the first free throw to put the Tigers up two before intentionally missing the second, forcing the Lopers to attempt a full-court heave that missed.

The Tigers had four players score in double figures for a second game in a row and for the fifth time this season. Hollenbeck led the way with 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting and 5-of-5 from the free-throw line. Golladay scored 12 points thanks to a trio of 3-pointers, while Wagner added 11 points and Earney scored 10. Golladay, Wagner and Loewe all distributed three assists each, while Wagner led the way with four steals.

Fort Hays State turned the ball over just eight times while creating 14 Loper turnovers thanks to 10 steals. The Tigers hit eight 3-pointers in the win, reaching that mark for the fourth-consecutive game.

The Tigers will play seven of their final 11 games at home starting Thursday when FHSU hosts Washburn beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HAYS – Manhattan had four wrestlers finish in first place
and four place second and won the team title with 267 points at the Bob Kuhn
Prairie Classic Friday and Saturday at Hays High School. Phillipsburg had five wrestlers finish third
and finished second with 154 points. Hays scored 144.5 points and placed third.

Harley Zimmerman was the Indians lone champ cruising
past the field at 144. Zimmerman (25-0) won all five of his matches by either fall or
technical fall. He defeated Jamie Ramirez of Greeley West (Colo.) by fall in his first
round match Friday. In round two, he defeated Slayde Nuss of Russell by fall.
In the quarterfinals, Zimmerman defeated Dayton Fromholtz of Cheylin/St. Francis
by technical fall. He then beat Braysen Salinas of Ulysses by technical fall in the
semifinals then defeated Manhattan’s Logan Lagerman by fall in the finals.

The Indians Eliljah McCullough (22-2) finished second at 113. After a technical fall win over Phillipsburg’s Brady Russom in the
first round, McCullough beat Pratt’s Maddox Riffey 14-13 in the quarterfinals. After
a 12-8 win over Tyler Bolt of Sante Fe Trail in the semifinals, McCullough lost
to Manhattan’s Ezekiel Witt by fall in the finals. 

Dalton Meyers (23-2) placed third at 190. After receiving a
first round bye, Meyers won by fall over Buhler’s Lucas Anderson in the quarterfinals.
Manhattan’s Landon Dobson defeated Meyers by fall in the semifinals. Meyers
then won by fall over Goodland’s Logan Franz in the consolation semifinals then
defeated Huguton’s Daniel Tinoco 17-6 in the third place match.

Tacoma Augustine placed fifth for Hays at 126. Corbin Luck
was sixth at 157 and Will Linenberger sixth at 285.

🤼‍♂️ HHS boys finish third at Bob Kuhn Prairie Classic

COLBY -&nbsp;The Hays High girls wrapped up day three of the Orange and Black Classic in Colby with a 1-2 record after a 44-34 loss to Olathe East on Saturday.&nbsp; The Hays boys defeated Liberty (Colo.) 63-42 and won their last two games after an overtime loss to Goodland in the first round and placed fourth.

The Hawks from Olathe opened the game with a 3-pointer and led the entire game. Hays was never able to tie or take the lead but had plenty of opportunities.

Their best chance came while down one point in the third quarter at 27-26. Hays had the ball three times at the end of the third quarter and twice at the beginning of the fourth but was unable to secure the lead.

The fourth quarter was owned by the Hawks as they outscored Hays 17-8 for the 44-34 win.

Hays was led in scoring by Molly Martin who scored 13. She made three, three pointers to set the career three point makes record at 97. She breaks the record of Melissa Beyer who made 2001 from 1997 to 2001.

Both Hays and Olathe East are 6-5 on the season.

The Hays High Indians came into the final day of the 39th Colby Orange and Black Classic battling for fourth place against Liberty High School out of Colorado. The Indians used a big third quarter to win 63-42.&nbsp;

After halftime the Indians trailed the Lancers 31-30. An offensive explosion in the third, pushed the Indians to a 50-37 advantage. Hays High outscored Liberty 19-7 in the quarter. The Indians offense relied on the production from Sophomore Izaac Fox who scored six in the frame.&nbsp;

Throughout the fourth quarter the Indians kept building their lead. In the fourth the Indians' highest lead was 18 points.&nbsp;

In the beginning of the game the Indians and Lancers went back and forth, as it was a fast paced game. Hays High kept pace with the Lacers with 11 first half points from senior Edwin Muller.&nbsp;

Hays High came into the game 3-0 in the fourth place game in the Orange and Black. The last time the Indians were in the fourth place game was 2019.&nbsp;

Liberty had two scorers in double figures as 6-10 junior Landon Praytor finished the game with 18 points and led all scorers. Liberty also had freshman Cameron Cunningham finish with 17 points.&nbsp;

The Indians finished with three double figure scores in Muller with 15 points, Sophomore Dawson Ruder with 13 points, and Fox finished with 11.&nbsp;

The Hays High Indians claimed their fourth place finish, and will back at home Friday, January 26th against the Great Bend Panthers.&nbsp;

🏀 Hays boys claim fourth, girls go 1-2 at Orange & Black Classic

PLAINVILLE – The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys and girls basketball teams both
earned a seventh place finish this week at the MCL tournament as they closed
out the week with a pair of wins on Saturday.

The TMP girls never trailed and Brooke Koenigsman scored a
career-high 26 points as the Lady Monarchs picked up a 54-46 win over Oakley.

The Monarchs (5-8) opened the game outscoring Oakley 21-11
in the first quarter. 

Claire Schippers and Koenigsman combined to score 15 of the
21 points as TMP jumped out to a double-digit lead.

TMP’s largest lead in the first half was 12, at 25-13 on pair
off Brynn Rebel free throws but Oakley outscored TMP by four in the second
quarter and closed to 28-22 at halftime.

The Monarchs held the lead through the third quarter and
were up 12 at 43-31 heading into the final quarter.

Oakley (5-8) was able to cut the TMP lead to three, at 45-42
but the Monarchs clinched the win at the free throw line in the final frame on
their way to the 54-46 victory.

Koenigsman led all scorers with a career—high 26 points.
Teagan Gottschalk and Claire Schippers both added seven points each.

The TMP boys rallied from down nine in the second half and
beat the Trego Golden Eagles 52-45 Saturday in the MCL boys seventh place game.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair between the two
teams with eight lead changes in the first two quarters. Neither team led by more than
four in the first half and there were four ties with the last at 21-21 at
halftime.

Trego (2-8) opened the second half outscoring TMP 14-5 as
they built their largest lead of the game at 35-26.

But the Monarchs (5-8) wasted little time answering right
back with a 19-4 run to end the third and open the fourth quarter for a 45-39
lead.

The run included five straight by Griffin Schumacher to end
the third quarter and the Ty Schmeidler capped off the run with a three-point
play to put the Monarchs up six.

Trego briefly closed within two but the Monarchs sealed the
win at the free throw line in a 52-45 victory.

Ian Nehls led all scorers, matching his career-high of 17
points. Schmeilder finished with nine points and Schumacher added eight for the
Monarchs.

TMP coach Bill Meagher notched win number 100 at TMP in the victory.

The Monarchs will return to action on Tuesday at home against Great Bend.

🏀 Kaluma scores 23 as K-State rallies late to beat Oklahoma State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia can finally enjoy some positives after going through the ringer the past eight months.

The Mountaineers have endured Hall of Fame coach Bob Huggins' exit&nbsp;following a drunken driving arrest that led to a roster makeover.

Add to that a preseason health scare&nbsp;for forward Akok Akok, a nine0game suspension for guard Keith Kriisa, Jesse Edwards missing the past month with a broken wrist, and an ongoing court fight with the NCAA&nbsp;that had temporarily sidelined multiple-transfer players RaeQuan Battle and Noah Farrakhan.

Tipping the scale in the other direction was Saturday's euphoria. Battle scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds, Pat Suemnick added a career-high 20 points and West Virginia beat No. 3 Kansas 91-85.

“It’s a surreal moment, man,” Battle said. “It’s hard to win games like that, especially doing it at this level and being a few steps behind because we had a crazy offseason. I’m just proud of this team and the coaching staff.”

Fans stormed the court after the Mountaineers (7-11, 2-3 Big 12) improved to 7-5 against Kansas in Morgantown and broke a six-game losing streak in the series.

“That one felt good,” said West Virginia interim coach Josh Eilert,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/west-virginia-huggins-eilert-interim-94a2217e3fb59ec0d70b1f51afb12527">who took over a week after Huggins' arrest</a>.

“That's what our guys needed,” Eilert said. "I’m going to savor it tonight, I promise you that. We’ve been through a lot. This fan base has been through a lot. But tomorrow it’s right back to it to figure out a game plan for Central Florida.”

The win came a week after the Mountaineers beat then-No. 25 Texas, also at home.

West Virginia set the pace Saturday with an early 3-point barrage and outhustled the Jayhawks to get key free throws in the end.

Kansas (15-3, 3-2) trailed for most of the second half until KJ Adams hit two free throws for an 81-80 lead with 2:41 remaining. Suemnick answered with a bank shot over Hunter Dickinson 35 seconds later to give the Mountaineers the lead for good.

West Virginia sealed the win by making nine of 10 free throws in the final 34 seconds.

“I just think we wanted it more,” Suemnick said.

Kriisa added 15 points for the Mountaineers.

Kevin McCullar led Kansas with 24 points and Dickinson scored 19. Freshman Johnny Furphy hit three 3-pointers and grabbed three rebounds in the first four minutes but went 22 minutes before scoring again and finished with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Mountaineers, the Big 12’s worst 3-point shooting team, made 12 of 21 (57%) from beyond the arc, including nine of their first 11.

Shooting wasn't a problem for Kansas, either. The Jayhawks went 32 of 60 (53%) from the floor.

“There's going to be games like this for everybody" in the Big 12, Kansas coach Bill Self said. “It's a monster league.”

Kansas could drop several spots in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">AP Top 25</a>&nbsp;poll.

Kansas: It's the most points allowed this season by the Jayhawks, who ran into a determined team that has beaten two straight ranked opponents at home.

West Virginia: With Edwards still out, Eilert stressed the importance of rebounding. The Mountaineers outrebounded Kansas 31-22, the Jayhawks' lowest total this season.

“I felt like we were quicker to the ball,” Eilert said.

Kansas: Hosts Cincinnati on Monday night.

West Virginia: Plays at UCF on Tuesday night.
