PARK CITY, Kan. - The Hays High girls wrestling team had five placers and the boys three at the 5A state championships which concluded Saturday at the Park City Arena. 

The Indian girls finished sixth in the team standings. with 94.5 points. Kapaun Mt. Carmel won the girls state title, Basehor-Linwood finished runner-up and Shawnee Heights was third.

The HHS girls team went 8-1 in the first round with all eight victories via pin. Timber Lovewell (31-8) led the way with a third-place finish at 145. Lexi Barnett (17-3) placed fourth at 155, Tionna Napue (20-7) earned her third state medal with a fifth place finish at 135.&nbsp;Ava Ruiz (26-9) also placed fifth at 140 and&nbsp;Eleanor Stoffel (26-9) placed 5th at 190.

Dalton Meyers and Johnny Rigler led the Hays boys with third place finishes. Meyers (30-6) at 175 and Rigler (32-10)&nbsp; at 190. Cyler Luck&nbsp;(29-13) was fifth at 106.&nbsp;

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — JT Toppin had 21 points to lead&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">No. 10</a>&nbsp;Texas Tech to a 78-73 win over Kansas on Saturday.

It was the second win at Allen Fieldhouse (2-22) in the school's history.

Christian Anderson had 15 points and Darrion Williams scored 14 for Texas Tech (22-7, 13-5 Big 12).

KJ Adams Jr. had 21 points for the Jayhawks (19-10, 10-8), who had multiple runs of at least six points.

The Red Raiders used a 16-2 run early in the half to turn a six-point deficit into an eight-point lead. They led 48-37 at halftime.

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders were not intimidated by Allen Fieldhouse and the raucous crowd. Despite being 1-21 all-time in the facility, the Raiders responded every time the Jayhawks made a run.

Kansas: The Jayhawks lacked a killer instinct. Even though they clawed back into the game multiple times, they couldn't pull away.

After Kansas came all the way back to tie the game at 73-all, Williams hit a 3-pointer to give the Red Raiders the lead for good.

Texas Tech outscored Kansas 45-12 from 3-point range.

Texas Tech will host Colorado on Wednesday night, while Kansas visits No. 4 Houston on Monday night.

The president said he would sign a pardon for Rose “over the next few weeks.”

The sixth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team plays Nebraska-Kearney for a second time in four days Saturday when the long-time rivals wrap up the regular season in Kearney, Neb. First tip is slated for 2 p.m. inside the Health &amp; Sports Center.

Winners of 12 in a row, Fort Hays State is now 25-2 overall and 17-2 in conference play. The Tigers are one game behind Pittsburg State in the conference regular season standings, however with Wednesday's dominant win over Nebraska-Kearney FHSU has moved past the Gorillas in the KPI rankings which will be used for tournament seeding. This rating system assigns point values to wins and losses based on opponent and location, etc.

This is the second 12-game winning streak of the season for the Tigers. It is tied for the seventh-longest winning streak in team history while this is just the third time in the team's 56-year history that FHSU has had multiple double-digit winning streaks in a single season.

Fort Hays State now has 25 wins in back-to-back seasons, reaching that plateau&nbsp;for the eighth time in school history. One more win would move 2024-25 into a tie for fifth for the winningest season in school history (26 wins in 2017-18).

The Tigers just completed a perfect month of February, winning all eight of their games. It is the winningest month for the team since FHSU went 9-0 in February 2021.

Fort Hays State knocked down a blistering 60.7 percent from the floor in Wednesday's 92-56 win over the Lopers, shooting better than 60 percent for the first time in four years. That effort helped the Tigers improve their season shooting percentage to 46.6 percent, fifth-best in the country.

The Tigers also rank second nationally in assist/turnover ratio (1.38), fourth in assists per game (18.7) fifth in scoring margin (plus-19.6), sixth in winning percentage (92.6 percent) and 10th in field goal percentage defense (34.6 percent).

Brooke Loewe&nbsp;distributed nine assists Wednesday, bringing her season total to 186. That total is the most in a single season in team history and ranks second in Division II.

Talexa Weeter&nbsp;matched her career high with 25 points in just 17 minutes of action against the Lopers, scoring 20-plus points for the fifth time this year. Despite coming off the bench, the sophomore ranks 15th in the conference with 13.1 points per game.

Kate DeGarmo&nbsp;totaled 20 points in Wednesday's win, scoring in double figures for the ninth time in 11 tries against Nebraska-Kearney. The Maize, Kan. native averages 12.5 points and 6.3 rebounds when playing the Lopers.

Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;recorded a career-high six steals against UNK, bringing her season total to 60 steals. That ranks second in the conference, while she also ranks second in the league in field goal percentage (61.8 percent), third in blocks (47) and fifth in points per game (16.5).

Bailey Wilborn&nbsp;drilled a trio of 3-pointers in Wednesday's win, doing so for the fourth time this season. She is tied with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/ellie-stearns/8333">Ellie Stearns</a>&nbsp;for the most games with at least three long-range makes this year. Stearns now has at least one 3-pointer in six of the last seven games.

Megan Earney&nbsp;also hit three shots from behind the arc against the Lopers, helping FHSU knock down a season-best 10 3-pointers.

Both the Tigers and Lopers were ranked in the top 10 in the latest NCAA Division II Central Region rankings that were released on Wednesday. Fort Hays State was listed third in the region, while UNK was 10th.

This is not the first time the Lopers and Tigers have played twice in one week. Just four years ago the teams played twice in three days during the COVID-altered 2020-21 season. The unranked Tigers handed No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney its first and second losses of the season, winning 61-49 in Hays on a Thursday (1/28/21) and coming away victorious 68-60 two days later in Kearney (1/30/21).

The Tigers have both played and beaten UNK more than any other school in program history. Fort Hays State is 63-42 all-time against Nebraska-Kearney, while the series is tied 25-25 in games played in Kearney. FHSU has won each of the last three meetings. The Tigers are 3-0 against the Lopers under head coach Talia Kahrs, including a 1-0 record on the road. The Tigers are 19-6 against UNK in regular season MIAA meetings and 5-3 in games that reach overtime, including wins in the last five overtime meetings.

The Lopers are now 19-8 overall and 12-6 in conference action, including a 10-2 record at home. Nebraska-Kearney averages 71.9 points per night, sixth-best in the MIAA. Their scoring margin of plus-13.0 is third-best in the league. The Lopers average 26.6 points off the bench per game, best in the league and 25th-best in Division II. Jillian Aschoff leads a balanced offense with 11.3 points per game, however six Lopers average at least 7.6 points per game. Bailee Sobczak leads the conference with 3.3 offensive rebounds per game.

Looking ahead, the Tigers will enter the postseason next week when they head to historic Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City, Mo. for the 2025 MIAA Basketball Championship presented by Southern Bank. Should the Tigers earn the No. 1 or 2 seed in the tournament they would play in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Hays finished off the regular season by hosting Great Bend. The games were the final scheduled games at the current high school with plans to be in the new high school for next season.

Girls #4 Hays 67, Great Bend 23

Three big first half runs pushed Hays to a 67-23 over Great Bend allowing the Indians to capture their first ever perfect regular season.

The Panthers scored the first two points of the game. The Indians scored the next 16 and never looked back. Hays led 16-2 and that lead never dipped under double digits rest of the night.

Great Bend did score back-to-back field goals to make the difference 16-6, but never drew any closer. The Indians added to their lead at the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second quarter with a 13-0 run for a 22-6 lead.

Another run, this time 12-2, put Hays ahead 41-10 at halftime.

The best Great Bend run in the game came in the third quarter when they scored seven in a row to bring the score to 46-17. Hays ended that quarter with a 13-2 run for a forty point lead heading to the fourth.

The fourth was played with a running clock and ended with a 44 point difference at 67-23. It is the tenth opponent to score 29 or less points and eleventh to make nine or less field goals.

All five seniors scored for the Indians on Senior Night. Hays(20-0, 8-0) has won back-to-back undefeated conference titles and 19 straight conference games. Great Bend(6-14, 2-6) turned the ball over 31 times.

Hays will be the #1 seed in 5A West for postseason. They will host Great Bend once again on Tuesday.

Great Bend scored the first 15 points of the game while it took Hays six minutes to get on the board in the Panthers 66-32 victory.&nbsp;

Hays scored five straight to get within ten at 15-5. It would be the closest the Indians would get all night.&nbsp; The Panthers shot lights out the entire evening. They made 15 of 23 shots in the first half for a 34-18 advantage.

Great Bend hit their first six shots of the second half, including two three pointers. The Panthers pushed their lead as high as thirty points in the third quarter at 53-23.&nbsp;

Most of the fourth quarter was played with a continuous clock ending with a 66-32 Great Bend victory.

Great Bend(18-2, 8-0) shot 69% from the floor and made seven of eight three pointers. Hays(12-8, 6-2) matched a season low in points.

Sub-state pairings will be made official on Saturday morning. Hays will host Hutchinson in the first round of sub-state on Wednesday.

🏀 Hays girls complete perfect regular season; boys fall to Great Bend

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State scored nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and powered their way to a 14-1 run-rule win over Missouri Western State in game one of the their three-game MIAA series Friday afternoon at Larks Park. The Tigers improved to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in the MIAA while the Griffons dropped to 1-11 and 0-4 in conference play.

MWSU grabbed the lead on a Frank Gall solo homer in the the third. 

It took Tigers a bit to solve Griffon starter Lynden Bruegman, but finally broke through in a big way in the fourth following a Missouri Western error that led a big two-out rally. FHSU generated nine straight hits following the error and plated nine runs. Tytin Goebel&nbsp;tied the game with an RBI single, then Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;put the Tigers on top with an RBI double. Tony Moore and Isaiah Ural&nbsp;each recorded RBI singles to make it 4-1. After a pitching change, Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;smacked a two-run double, Derek Woolwine&nbsp;followed with a single, and then Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;launched a 3-run homer to make it 9-1. 

The Tigers added a run in the sixth on a Herrmann solo homer. In the seventh, a pair of singles and a hit batter set up a walk-off grand slam by Ural to end the game by run rule.

Ty Riley&nbsp; (4-0) struck out nine and allowed only two hits in the complete game victory. 

Ural finished had a team-best five RBIs while DeGarmo and Herrmann each drove in three. Six Tigers had two hits in the game.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.&nbsp;– The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced its postseason basketball championships will remain in Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium through 2030.

"Following consideration of multiple competitive bids by other communities to host the MIAA women's and men's basketball championships every March, I am pleased to announce that the MIAA Tournament will remain in Kansas City at least through the 2030 Championships,” said MIAA Commissioner Mike Racy during today's announcement."

The MIAA is one of the oldest conferences in the NCAA, and we have one of the most competitive college basketball tournaments in the country every year,” continued Commissioner Racy. “Our coaches and student-athletes love competing in the historic Municipal Auditorium, and it’s exciting that leaders in Kansas City want to continue to feature the MIAA basketball championships every Spring as part of ‘March Madness’ in this great college basketball city!"

The league’s upcoming men’s and women’s basketball championships will mark the 22nd year of MIAA Madness in Kansas City’s historic Municipal Auditorium. With the Association’s previous contract expiring after the 2026 championships, MIAA presidents put the tournament up for proposals and unanimously approved a four-year extension to keep one of Division II’s best conference championships in Kansas City.

Located in downtown Kansas City, Municipal Auditorium’s 10,700-seat arena has hosted 80 NCAA men’s basketball tournament games, including nine Final Fours, which is more than any other facility. Kansas City was also recently selected as the host city for multiple upcoming NCAA championships, including the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://themiaa.com/services/go.ashx/dc5fde51-a4da-40cd-b5b6-107ae9bfa67c?elinkdata=455806">2026 NCAA Division II Fall Festival</a>.

HAYS -&nbsp;The TMP Marian Monarchs split a home doubleheader in the first round of the 2A Sublette sub-state Thursday with the Lady Monarchs taking down Medicine Lodge to advance to semifinals, while the Monarch boys come up short in overtime, ending their season.&nbsp;

GIRLS: TMP 51, Medicine Lodge 26 The Monarchs Brooke Koenigsman scored 12 of her game high 23 points in the first quarter and TMP held the Indians to just two points in the third quarter in a 51-26 TMP victory.

Koenigsman drained back-to-back three pointers to open the game and then added a three point play for a 9-0 lead.

Shyanne Yost added back-to-back field goals as the Monarchs built a 14-4 lead early in the first quarter.

A third Koenigsman three pointer gave TMP (13-9) the 16-6 through the first quarter.

The Monarchs struggled in the second quarter, and were outscored 7-2 in the frame but still led at halftime 20-13.

TMP found their offense rhythm in the second half and outscored the Indians 12-2 in the third quarter as they held on to t0 a 32-15 through three quarters.

The Monarchs continued to stretch the lead in the fourth quarter on their way to the 51-26 victory.

Gracyn Schippers added six rebounds and six blocked shots on top of her six points.

The Monarchs will take on either No. 1 seed Wichita County or the No. 16 seed Sublette next week.

BOYS: Medicine Lodge 52, TMP 51 The Indians rallied from down double-digits in the first half as they knocked off the Monarchs 52-51 in overtime.

TMP (12-10) broke onto the scoreboard early and often in the first quarter as Ty Schmeidler 11 of his game-high 23 point and the Monarches led 17-8 after the first quarter.

It was more of the same in the second quarter, with the Monarchs connecting on three more three pointers giving them six first half threes for a 35-31 lead heading into the &nbsp;break.

Grants Nehls opened the final quarter with a field goal in the paint putting TMP up 38-37.

But Nehls got a technical and fouled out of the game. That allowed Medicine Lodge to score eight straight and take a 39-38 lead.&nbsp;

But a technical, on Keveon Ruiz for the Indians allowed the Monarchs to retake the lead at 40-39.

He also fouled out of the game with under four minutes left in the game.

In the final quarter the Monarchs Caden Dinkel hit his third three pointer of the night with just over three and a half minutes to play in the game put gave TMP a four-point lead but &nbsp;they could not secure the lead at the free throw line and the game went to overtime.

In the extra period TMP was just two-for-six at the line and with eight seconds left and a two-point TMP lead, Medicine Lodge’s Maverick Inslee hit second second three pointer of the game putting the Indians ahead 52-51.

TMP had time for one more possession but could not get off a shot at the end of the overtime and fall by one.

Ty Schmeilder led all scorers with 21. His second straight 20 point game.

HAYS, Kan. – Kaleb Hammeke scored 27 points in his final home game to lead Fort Hays State to a 79-57 win over Nebraska-Kearney Wednesday at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The win improved the Tigers to 19-8 overall and 12-6 in the MIAA and was their 10th-straight at home. FHSU built a 12-point lead by halftime and never let the Lopers closer than nine in the second half on their way to posting a 15-1 record at home in the regular season. Nebraska-Kearney moved to 11-15 overall on the season and 9-9 in the MIAA.

Nebraska-Kearney held a small lead for about the first five minutes of the game until FHSU moved in front for good with the score at 9-8. That triggered a 10-2 run to push the Tigers to a seven-point lead about midway through the first half. The Tigers saw their lead grow to 15 points twice in the half before leading 40-28 at halftime.

After UNK got the lead down to nine with about 17 minutes to go in the game, FHSU went on a 9-0 run to double the lead up to 18 points. The Tigers cruised from that point, getting the lead out to the final margin of 22 twice.

Kaleb Hammeke made&nbsp; nine of his 12 shots from the field with three 3-point field goals. He was also a perfect 6-of-6 at the free-throw line. He added five assists and tied for the team high in rebounds with five. Hammeke is now just three points shy of the 2,000-point mark for his career.

Kyle Grill&nbsp;(14), Traejon Davis&nbsp;(10), and Dan Makuna&nbsp;(10) also finished in double figures for scoring. Grill was perfect shooting the ball for the night, going 4-of-4 beyond the 3-point line and 2-of-2 at the free-throw line. All five FHSU starters had at least seven points in the game.

Allen Taylor led the Lopers with 19 points, followed by Ja'Bryant Hill with 13 and Clayton Moore with 10.FHSU shot a blistering 56.8 percent from the field, while UNK shot 42.9 percent. The Tigers were a solid 19-of-22 at the free-throw line for the night as well.

With the win, FHSU moved up into a tie for second in the MIAA standings with Rogers State and Pittsburg State.

Fort Hays State gets a couple days of rest before having to take on Nebraska-Kearney again on Saturday, this time in Kearney. Tipoff will be at 4 p.m. at the Health and Sports Center. 🏀 Hammeke scores 27 in final game at GMC, Tigers cruise past Lopers

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Keyshawn Hall scored 26 points and Darius Garland scored 23 points and UCF held on to beat Kansas State 80-76 on Wednesday night.

Moustapha Thaim just missed the most rare of triple-doubles scoring 11 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking eight shots. It was the second straight win for the Knights (15-13, 6-11 Big 12) following a seven-game losing streak.

Max Jones scored 22 points, reserve C.J. Jones scored 12 points, Brendan Hausen 11 and Dug McDaniel 10 for Kansas State (13-15, 7-10). The Wildcats now have lost four straight following a six-game win streak.

Hausen made a deep 3-pointer and then was fouled getting poked in the eye by UCF's Mikey Williams with 14 seconds to go. Hausen made the free throw to reduce the the Wildcats' deficit to 78-76. Hall sealed it with a pair of free throws with 11 seconds remaining. Hausen missed a deep 3 attempt on Kansas State's next possession.

Benny Williams' layup with 5:48 remaining put the Knights ahead 69-58 before the Wildcats countered with a 7-0 run over the next 1:30 to draw within 69-65.

(AP) — Keyshawn Hall scored 26 points and Darius Garland scored 23 points and UCF held on to beat Kansas State 80-76 on Wednesday night.Moustapha Thaim just missed the most rare of triple-doubles scoring 11 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking eight shots. It was the second straight win for the Knights (15-13, 6-11 Big 12) following a seven-game losing streak.Max Jones scored 22 points, reserve C.J. Jones scored 12 points, Brendan Hausen 11 and Dug McDaniel 10 for Kansas State (13-15, 7-10). The Wildcats now have lost four straight following a six-game win streak.Hausen made a deep 3-pointer and then was fouled getting poked in the eye by UCF's Mikey Williams with 14 seconds to go. Hausen made the free throw to reduce the the Wildcats' deficit to 78-76. Hall sealed it with a pair of free throws with 11 seconds remaining.
