HAYS - State powerhouse Dodge City spoiled Hays High’s Western Athletic Conference opener Thursday, defeating the Indians 5-1 on their home field.
Hays High (4-2-1 overall, 0-1-0 WAC) was able to hold off Dodge City (6-0, 2-0) early, trailing only 1-0 at halftime.
But the juggernaut Red Demons came out strong in the second half with four more goals. Dodge City, a perennial WAC contender, has outscored its opponents 29-4 this season with three shutouts.
Hays High was able to avoid a shutout Thursday with a second-half goal by senior Camden Luck. Senior goalkeeper Cedric Durr recorded 10 saves for HHS for the second
consecutive game.
The Indians will continue WAC action next week when they travel to Great Bend (1-5) Tuesday.
