HAYS – The Hays High boys cross country team placed five runners in the top 15 and edged Garden City by one point to win its home invitational Thursday morning at the FHSU Cross Country Course.
The Indian girls also turned in a strong performance, placing three runners in the top 10 and finishing second in the team standings, 12 points behind Dodge City.
Sophomore Audrey Yarmer won the girls race in 19:00.70, finishing more than eight seconds ahead of Dodge City’s Olivia Springer. Hays High sophomore Alexa Cooley placed sixth in 21:06.50, followed by freshman Maya Pfeifer in seventh at 21:21.90. Sophomore Kiana Sun finished 15th in 22:19.70.
The Hays High boys were led by freshman Emery Zimmerman, who finished second in 16:56.80, just three seconds behind Garden City’s Elmer Argueta.
Sophomore Levi Denham placed sixth for the Indians in 17:25.40, while senior Logan Leiker was eighth in 17:35.30. Junior Bladyn Werth finished 11th in 17:46.30, and sophomore Emmitt Dreiling was 12th in 17:48.00.
