HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team picked up a four-set victory against Arkansas-Fort Smith Saturday afternoon (Oct. 18), winning 20-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-19. The Tigers (14-7, 3-6 MIAA) posted a .247 attack percentage and racked up 10 blocks while the Lions (13-8, 3-5 MIAA) recorded a swing rate of .166.

The Tigers raced out to a big early lead, scoring six of the first seven points to quickly lead by five. The visitors answered with five-straight to tie the score at six, but the Tigers were able to stay on top and later led by as many as four, 16-12. The Lions then answered with another 5-0 run to take their first lead at 17-16. FHSU tied the score at 17 but played from behind the rest of the way, eventually dropping the set by five despite recording one more kill than the Lions in the frame.

Fort Hays State got out to another good start in the second set, leading 5-2 and later 10-4. The Tigers maintained their lead for much of the set, later leading by as many as eight, 21-13. The Lions had one final push in them, scoring five in a row to narrow the gap to three, but FHSU responded with the final four points to even the match at one set apiece.

The theme continued in the third, with FHSU quickly leading 5-1 thanks in part to an Annie Eaton service ace. The Tigers led 10-8 later in the frame before UAFS scored four in a row to flip the script. The Lions later led by as many as five, 21-16, before the Tigers mounted their rally. Kills from Ashlyn Reeves and Gracie Rains and a pair of UAFS miscues helped the Tigers narrow the gap to one, 21-20.

More kills from Rains later helped the Tigers tie things at 23 and again at 24, fending off set point. Rains then gave the Tigers a 25-24 lead with her 11th kill of the match before a Lion error handed the Tigers the two-point victory.

After tallying five kills in both the second and third sets, Rains upped that total with six in the fourth to help the Tigers complete the victory. The teams traded points early before FHSU built a three-point lead at 9-6. A combo block from Reeves and Peyton Bergschneider extended the lead to six, 18-12, before the visitors used a 6-2 run to claw within two, 20-18.

Multiple Lion errors followed by a Bergschneider service ace helped the Tigers reach match point with four-consecutive scores before Rains finished things off with her team-best 17th kill of the day.

The senior recorded just three errors, posting a swing rate of .519. Ella Goodwin added 10 kills and two blocks, while Reeves tallied nine kills and five blocks (one solo). Carsyn Cormaney contributed six kills and four blocks, while Abrey Galt tossed up 26 assists alongside 12 digs. Eaton added 22 assists and one ace, while Bergschneider led the team with 17 digs along with five kills and three blocks.

The Tigers will return to action one week from today (Oct. 25) when they host fifth-ranked Nebraska-Kearney beginning at 3 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

STOCKTON -&nbsp;Hill City left no doubt Friday night, rolling past Stockton 78-0 in a game that ended at halftime by the 45-point mercy rule. The Ringnecks scored on every possession but one and forced six interceptions — including two returned for touchdowns — to move to 6-1 on the season and set up a district championship showdown next week with Decatur Community.

Stockton (0-7) opened the game with a promising start, getting to their own 25 before turning the ball over on downs. From there, the Ringnecks took control. Tyler Ashbaugh capped Hill City’s first drive with a 6-yard touchdown run to make it 8-0, and the floodgates opened.

Shawn Morris — on his first carry of the season — broke loose for a 21-yard score to double the lead. Tate Balthazor followed with a 12-yard touchdown run, and Slade Rohr added a 19-yard scamper to make it 30-0 late in the first quarter. Rohr then picked off a pass and returned it 25 yards for a pick-six, closing out a dominant opening frame with Hill City ahead 38-0.

The second quarter brought more of the same. A high snap on a Stockton punt led to a fumble recovery in the end zone by Koby Keiswetter, extending the margin to 44-0. Moments later, Ashbaugh grabbed an interception and Balthazor hit Rohr on a 37-yard touchdown pass to make it 52-0.

Stockton’s offense continued to struggle under constant pressure. Quarterback Titus Ferguson threw four straight interceptions to end the half, with Balthazor snagging two and Ryan Budig and Rohr each taking one to the house. Budig added a pair of rushing touchdowns — including a 43-yarder — while Chase Bell and Ashbaugh both found the end zone on the ground as Hill City piled up 309 rushing yards and 46 passing yards.

Balthazor led a balanced Ringneck attack, finishing 2 of 5 for 46 yards and a touchdown through the air, adding 48 rushing yards and three interceptions on defense. Budig ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns while adding a pick-six, and Rohr totaled 45 rushing yards, 37 receiving yards, and two total scores.

Stockton’s Ashton Nuss provided the lone bright spot, catching three passes for 52 yards, including an 18-yard conversion on fourth down. But Hill City’s defense smothered the Tigers, holding them to just seven rushing yards and forcing turnovers on nearly every second-quarter possession.

Hill City will host unbeaten Decatur Community next Friday for the 8-Man Division I District 8 title. Stockton travels to St. Francis looking to snap a 44-game losing streak that dates back to 2020.

Fort Hays State Football returns to action on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 18), taking on No. 19/15 ranked Northwest Missouri State in Maryville at 1:30 p.m. The Bearcats lead the MIAA, currently with a record of 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the MIAA, while Fort Hays State enters at 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the MIAA.

The Tigers are looking to bounce back from a 21-14 loss to Central Oklahoma last week. Fort Hays State's last three games have been decided by one possession, but the first two of those three resulted in wins.

Northwest Missouri State enters this game on a five-game win streak after dropping its season opener to nationally ranked Minnesota State. Last week the Bearcats defeated Central Missouri by a score of 49-32. The Bearcats scored at least 34 points in four of the five games during their currently winning streak.

The Bearcats lead the all-time series with FHSU 23-15-1. FHSU has won three of the last seven meetings with NWMSU, but scored less than 20 points in all three occurrences. The Tigers won in Maryville in 2017, 13-12, and again in 2018, 17-16, before winning the 2023 matchup in Hays 17-6. The Bearcats scored at least 30 points in three of their last four wins in the series, including a 32-20 win in Maryville last year.

Northwest Missouri State will be the fourth AFCA Top 25 ranked team the Tigers face this season. They are 1-2 in those contests so far, which included a win over CSU Pueblo, but losses to Angelo State and Pittsburg State.

Offensively, the Tigers are led by quarterback Caleb Heavner, who leads the team in passing yards and rushing yards. He has thrown for 1,258 and rushed for 303, averaging 223 yards of total offense per game. The Tigers have had a committee of running backs and receivers he has spread the ball around to this year. FHSU has four running backs with more than 150 rushing yards and five receivers with over 150 receiving yards. Tight end Cale Cormaney leads in receiving yards with 235.

Defensively, John Johnson leads the Tigers with 75 tackles, which ranks second in the MIAA. His 10.7 tackles per game average ranks ninth nationally. Johnson became the sixth player in FHSU's NCAA Division II history to record 300 tackles in a career, now with 305. He also leads the team in tackles for loss this year with 7.0. Gaven Haselhorst leads FHSU in sacks with 4.0, while Michael Chavez and Michael Polley each have two interceptions this year.

The Bearcats are averaging 454 yards per game. Zechariah Owens leads in rushing yards with 330, Chris Ruhnke has thrown for 802 yards, and Luke Mathews leads in receiving yards with 261. Carter Edwards leads the Bearcats in tackles with 45.

HAYS - Hays High couldn't overcome five touchdowns by Notre Dame commit Ian Premer as the Panthers defeated the Indians 43-19 in front of an overflow crowd Friday evening at Hays High School.

There was just one visit to the end zone by either team in the first half. Premer took the ball 17 yards on a run giving the Panthers a 7-0 lead with 1:08 left in the first quarter.

Hays (5-2, 2-1) took the opening possession but turned the ball over on downs after eight plays. Great Bend (7-0, 3-0) marched to the Hays twenty. Their drive ended in the same fate when Jarek Purdy knocked down a pass on a double pass attempt.

Hays punted after three plays setting up Great Bend's score. The Panthers used six plays to cover 48 yards. The Indians turned the ball over on downs and punted on their next two drives. Great Bend had a pass picked off by Purdy and punted on their final two drives of the half.

Hays took the final drive of the first half as far as the one yard line. Following confusion for both teams' sidelines over the final three seconds of the quarter, time ran out for the Indians to score.

The Indians second touchdown came from Braxton Basgall on a ten yard rush. A missed extra point left the score at 21-13 with 10:27 left in the fourth.

Lind broke loose on a 54 yard touchdown to pull Hays within 28-19 with 4:18 left. The Indians' two point conversion was unsuccessful.&nbsp;

Ian Premer scored two more touchdowns, one on defense, for the final of 43-19.

Holden Lind ran for 251 yards one week after 303 yards.

Hays travels to Liberal to finish the regular season. Great Bend plays host to Garden City.

SYRACUSE – The TMP-Marian Monarchs forced a season-high
seven turnovers and cruised to a 52-0 victory over the Syracuse Bulldogs Friday
night in Syracuse.

The Monarchs (3-2, 2-1, 3-2 MCL) started slow, punting on
their first possession of the game, but Isaac Purinton intercepted the first
pass of the game by the Bulldogs, setting the Monarchs up with a short field.

The Monarchs took just two plays to put the game's first
points on the board, and after the two-point conversion, the Monarchs led 8-0
midway through the first quarter.

Syracuse (0-6, 0-3) answered with a long drive that came to
an end on fourth down in TMP territory. Two plays later, TMP’s Carson Liles
found Jackson Gillespie for the first of his three touchdown passes on the game,
putting TMP up 14-0 after the failed two-point try.

After both teams were forced to punt on their next drive,
Syracuse was pinned deep inside their own territory, and Grant Nehl broke free
for his first of two sacks on the day, this one resulting in a safety for a
16-0 TMP lead with 11:45 to play in the first half.

And again, just two plays later, Gillespie broke into the
open field for a 58-yard touchdown run, his second of three on the night, putting
TMP up 22-0 with just over two minutes gone in the second quarter.

Nash Dreiling recorded his first career interception on the
next Syracuse possession, and plays later, Liles found Nehls for a 27-yard
touchdown pass, putting TMP up 30-0 after the two-point conversion.

Following another Syracuse fumble, one of their four on the
day, TMP’s Liles found Dreiling for his first career receiving touchdown and a
38-0 TMP lead, after the conversion, with just under six minutes left in the
first half.

In the second half, TMP added a one-yard Jackson Gillespie
touchdown run and a Liles extra point to go up 45-0 and start the continuous
clock.

Earlier in the fourth, TMP finished out their scoring with a
Dreiling three-yard touchdown pass to Connor Breit as TMP closed out a 52-0
victory.

The Monarchs unofficially finished with 343 yards of
offense. Carson Liles was 7-of-12 passing for 127 yards and one touchdown.

Jackson Gillespie finished with 118 yards and three touchdowns
on 13 carries, his second straight 100-yard rushing game.

🏈 Monarchs make it look easy in Syracuse

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Fort Hays State fell to Northwest Missouri State by a score of 2-0 on Friday afternoon. The Bearcats scored a pair of second half goals to take the match on their home field. NWMSU moved to 8-3-0 overall and 5-1 in the MIAA, while FHSU moved to 3-8-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the MIAA.

The Tigers had plenty of scoring opportunities, placing 10 shots on target in the match. However, they were all saved by Lily Ellis, who earned the shutout in net for the Bearcats. FHSU outshot NWMSU 20-12 overall in the match.

FHSU led the shot count in the first half 9-6. Both Ellis and Tiger keeper Hadley Ostrander had three saves in the opening half. 

Northwest Missouri broke through in the 53rd minute on a goal by Addy Armstrong. McKenna West extended the lead with a goal in the 77th minute. Both were NWMSU's only shots on goal in the second half.

Cotter led Fort Hays with six shots, three of which were on goal. Ostrander finished with three saves overall. 

Next up for Fort Hays State will be a match against Missouri Western on Sunday (Oct. 19) in St. Joseph. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.

HAYS, Kan. — Fort Hays State Men's Soccer reached 10 wins for the 12th time in 14 full seasons with a dominating 4-0 win over Newman on Thursday night. The No. 6 ranked Tigers, now 10-0-2 overall and 6-0-0 in the GAC, reached what has become a common standard in their still fairly young program history. The Jets, receiving votes in the latest national poll, moved to 5-3-4 overall and 2-2-2 in the GAC.

Fort Hays State extended its program record for most consecutive games without a loss to start a season to 12. The Tigers also recorded their third straight shutout, all by multiple goals, and now have nine shutouts overall for the season.

Fort Hays State established an early lead in the first half, with Mamadou Oumar Ndiaye scoring in the 3rd minute. Joseph Street had a throw into the box that found the back of Federico Heinrich's head and then the foot of Ndiaye in the box as he threaded home a shot through traffic. The Tigers maintained pressure in the first half with a 13-4 lead in shots, including a goal by Bastian Carlman in the 33rd minute when Tadhg Walsh intercepted a pass and put the ball forward to Carlman who found the net. FHSU led 2-0 at the break.

Fort Hays State extended its lead in the second half with Carlman's second goal of the match in the 57th minute, assisted by Heinrich. Tonnes Daland capped the scoring with his first goal for the Tigers in the 72nd minute going all the way from midfield to win a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper. Despite Newman's six corner kick opportunities in the second half, the Jets were unable to capitalize. FHSU won the shot battle 17-9 overall. Carlman led the Tigers with five shots.

Payton Roehrich and D'Alessandro Sosa posted a combined shutout, Roehrich going the first 80 minutes and then Sosa the final 10. Roehrich recorded two saves. Newman goalkeeper Francisco Pinochet had four saves for the evening.

Fort Hays State now preps for a key battle on the road at Northeastern State on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Tahlequah, Okla. The RiverHawks are 6-4-2 overall and 3-3-0 in the GAC.

LIBERAL - Another tough conference match with a Class 6A heavyweight resulted in another one-goal loss for the Hays High boys' soccer team Tuesday.

Liberal scored two first-half goals en route to the 2-1 decision in Western Athletic Conference action to move to 10-2 overall and 4-2 in the WAC.

Hays High got back within one late in the game on an Ivan Maldonado header off a corner kick.

The Indians once again put up another strong defensive effort against the Redskins with eight saves by goalkeeper Cedric Durr but couldn't get the equalizer.

Hays High (6-7 overall, 2-5 WAC) will try to get back to .500 Thursday when it entertains Garden City for Senior Night at the HHS field.

The Buffaloes (12-1-1, 6-0-1) have already clinched the WAC title with their bend-don't-break season that has featured six one-goal victories and a tie, including a 2-1  match with Hays High last month.

The Indians would like to flip that result Thursday and send their seniors out in style in the final game on their home field.

Starting time is 4:30 p.m. for the junior varsity, followed by the varsity. 

SubmittedLIBERAL - Another tough conference match with a Class 6A heavyweight resulted in another one-goal loss for the Hays High boys' soccer team Tuesday.Liberal scored two first-half goals en route to the 2-1 decision in Western Athletic Conference action to move to 10-2 overall and 4-2 in the WAC.Hays High got back within one late in the game on an Ivan Maldonado header off a corner kick.The Indians once again put up another strong defensive effort against the Redskins with eight saves by goalkeeper Cedric Durr but couldn't get the equalizer.Hays High (6-7 overall, 2-5 WAC) will try to get back to .500 Thursday when it entertains Garden City for Senior Night at the HHS field.The Buffaloes (12-1-1, 6-0-1) have already clinched the WAC title with their bend-don't-break season that has featured six one-goal victories and a tie, including a 2-1 match with Hays High last month.The Indians would like to flip that result Thursday and send their seniors out in style in the final game on their home field.Starting time is 4:30 p.m. for the junior varsity, followed by the varsity.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs will finally get to see what their offense looks like when Rashee Rice joins fellow wide receivers Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown on the field for Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Rice returned to practice Wednesday after his six-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, a punishment that was handed down for causing a high-speed wreck on a Dallas highway in March 2024 that injured several people.

He rejoins an offense that just scored 30 points on the Detroit Lions last week and is starting to find its swagger again.

“He's going to want to be out there every single play. That's the mentality he has,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “It's going to be our job as coaches and teammates to build him back the right way, but it's going to be hard to keep him off the field.”

That's a good problem given how long the Chiefs have waited to get their top three wide receivers on the field together.

It was the vision of Chiefs general manager Brett Veach and coach Andy Reid going back more than a year, when they signed Brown in free agency and drafted Worthy in the first round. But the plan went amiss almost from the start, when Brown hurt his shoulder on the first play of preseason — last preseason — and it kept him out until December.

By that time, Rice had torn ligaments in his knee, sidelining him the rest of the season. The freak injury occurred when Mahomes threw an interception and was trying to make a tackle, and instead collided with his wide receiver's right knee.

After undergoing surgery, Rice managed to get back on the field for the Chiefs' offseason program, and he was able to take part in training camp. But then the NFL handed down its suspension, keeping Rice away from the team for the first six weeks.

Worthy hurt his shoulder in the season opener, causing him to miss a couple of games as well.

Now, all three of the wide receivers are healthy and available, and it seems the biggest question is whether there are enough opportunities to go around. The Chiefs also have gotten good production from JuJu Smith-Schuster, and tight end Travis Kelce has had a resurgent season after spending the past eight months getting into better shape.

“Everybody eats,” Worthy said with a smile, pointing out that Rice's return also means “more eyes going to somebody else.”

“I feel like everybody in this offense can make a play or go win one on one. It's another explosive guy,” Worthy added.

Rice brings a different look to the offense than Brown or Worthy. He has the size and physicality to catch passes near the line of scrimmage and make yards after contact. It's a similar set of skills to Smith-Schuster, though Rice is younger and faster.

“Listen, I think he's excited to be back in and going,” said Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who declined to say whether he'd have any snap count on Rice in his first game back. “You know, I think getting through practices here will be good for him to get back in the swing of things. We'll see how everything goes from there. He's been working hard. He's in good shape.”

While the Chiefs expect to have their full complement of wide receivers, they could be without left tackle Josh Simmons for the second consecutive game. He was a late scratch from last week's win over Detroit with what the team called “personal reasons,” and Reid declined to address his status when asked about it multiple times Wednesday.

“Veach is handling everything there,” Reid said. “We'll leave it at that.”

Simmons' absence means Jaylon Moore is expected to start again at left tackle. He signed a two-year, $30 million deal in free agency with the expectation of starting before the Chiefs drafted Simmons in the first round. Now, he is getting his chance.

“He's a competitive kid,” Reid said. “He did come here to step in, and he's always ready. He practices a third of the practices because (offensive line coach) Andy (Heck) rotates him in there. I thought he did a nice job the other night. He played well. We have a lot of trust in him. Most of all, the guys around him have a lot of trust in him.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State moved up to No. 6 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll released on Tuesday. It is the highest national ranking for the Tigers since 2019 when they started that season ranked No. 3 in the nation. It is the third-highest ranking the Tigers have ever held in the poll.

Fort Hays State remains unbeaten through 11 matches this season with a record of 9-0-2 overall. They are 5-0 so far in GAC play and reach the midway point of conference play this week when they host a receiving votes Newman squad on Thursday evening (Oct. 16). This is the longest unbeaten streak to start a season in program history and 11 matches is the third-longest unbeaten streak in program history at any point of a season. The program record is 16, set by the 2018 team that made the national semifinals.

Fort Hays State and Rogers State continued as the two teams from the GAC represented in the Top 25. The Hillcats are No. 14 in the latest poll. Newman was among the receiving votes list.

Fort Hays State was one of seven teams in the top 10 this week that remain unbeaten for the season. The nine wins by FHSU matches the most of any of the unbeaten teams in the national poll. There are nine total teams in the top 25 without a loss this season.

⚽ FHSU men move up to No. 6 in United Soccer Coaches poll

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The Fort Hays State women's golf team placed 14th at the Midwest Classic this week (Oct. 13-14) at Mules National Golf Course, a par-70, 5,564-yard layout.

The Tigers turned in rounds of 326, 340 and 331. Alexis Elliott was FHSU's top placer, finishing in a tie for 55th with a three-round total of 238. The sophomore matched her season-low with a 78 in the opening round before improving that season low by two shots with a 76 in the third round.

Hayden York finished two shots behind Elliott, finishing in a tie for 60th with a three-round score of 240. The junior led the team with five birdies on the week after opening the tournament with a career-low 74 in the opening round.

Competing as an individual, Abbie Norris placed 75th with a total score of 254. Jaycee Oakley compiled a three-round total of 261, good for 80th place, while Kiley Maier was one shot back with a total of 262 to finish in a tie for 81st. Brynn Ray was 87th with a score of 270, while competing as an individual Ashlyn Koenke finished 88th with a score of 283.

Host Central Missouri took home the team title with a three-round total of 31-over, while Arkansas Tech's Ellen Spigner secured the individual title with a cumulative score of 5-under following rounds of 68, 68 and 69.

The Tigers will be back in action next week (Oct. 20-21) at the Holiday Inn Express Regional Preview at St. Joseph Country Club in St. Joseph, Mo.

 </figure>FHSU AthleticsWARRENSBURG, Mo. - The Fort Hays State women's golf team placed 14th at the Midwest Classic this week (Oct. 13-14) at Mules National Golf Course, a par-70, 5,564-yard layout.The Tigers turned in rounds of 326, 340 and 331. Alexis Elliott was FHSU's top placer, finishing in a tie for 55th with a three-round total of 238. The sophomore matched her season-low with a 78 in the opening round before improving that season low by two shots with a 76 in the third round.Hayden York finished two shots behind Elliott, finishing in a tie for 60th with a three-round score of 240. The junior led the team with five birdies on the week after opening the tournament with a career-low 74 in the opening round.Competing as an individual, Abbie Norris placed 75th with a total score of 254. Jaycee Oakley compiled a three-round total of 261, good for 80th place, while Kiley Maier was one shot back with a total of 262 to finish in a tie for 81st. ⛳ Tiger women place 14th at Midwest Classic in Warrensburg

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State's Emily Diercks has been named the latest MIAA Women's Cross Country Athlete of the week, announced Tuesday by the league office.

The Hoxie, Kan. native was the top NCAA Division II runner at the FHSU Tiger Open over the weekend (Oct. 11), placing third out of 103 finishers with a five-kilometer time of 17:16.2. The defending MIAA champion has yet to lose to a Division II competitor this season.

The senior helped the Tigers to a third place finish as a team, finishing behind a pair of top-five ranked teams in No. 1 Colorado School of Mines and No. 4 Adams State.

This is the second time Diercks has received an MIAA weekly honor in her career.

Fort Hays State will enter postseason competition next Saturday (Oct. 25) when the Tigers travel to Pittsburg, Kan. for the 2025 MIAA Championships. Diercks' run to defend her title will begin at 10 a.m. from the Four Oaks Golf Course.
