KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State men's wrestling's Connor Padgett&nbsp;was named second team All-MIAA at 174 pounds, announced Wednesday (Feb. 26) by the league office.

The redshirt-freshman is tied for the team lead with 16 wins on the year, posting a 16-13 record. Padgett was 4-1 in conference duals, including one technical fall victory and three decisions.

He is also tied for the team lead with 10 bonus point wins while leading all Tigers with five technical falls on the year.

Padgett and his Tiger teammates will next enter the postseason when they travel to Gunnison, Colo. for the Super Region VI Championships on Saturday. Action is set to begin at 11 a.m. (10 a.m. MT).

The sixth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team plays at home for the final time during the regular season on Wednesday when the Tigers host long-time rival Nebraska-Kearney. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

It is the first of two meetings this week between the Tigers (24-2, 15-2 MIAA) and Lopers (19-7, 12-5 MIAA), with the teams also wrapping up the regular season with another game in Kearney in just three days. Wednesday's game was originally scheduled to be played on January 7 but was postponed due to winter weather.

This is not the first time the Lopers and Tigers have played twice in one week. Just four years ago the teams played twice in three days during the COVID-altered 2020-21 season. The unranked Tigers handed No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney its first and second losses of the season, winning 61-49 in Hays on a Thursday (1/28/21) and coming away victorious 68-60 two days later in Kearney (1/30/21).

Both the Tigers and Lopers were listed as under consideration for selection into the 2025 NCAA Division II Central Region Championships in the first release of the Central Region rankings last Wednesday. Since that date the Tigers have won twice, including a double-digit win against then-No. 5 Pittsburg State. The Lopers, meanwhile, lost to both Missouri Southern and PSU last week.

The Tigers still trail Pittsburg State in the latest update of the&nbsp;<a href="https://themiaa.com/images/2025/2/24/2025_wbb_kpi_3.png">MIAA KPI Standings</a>, which will be used for seeding for the 2025 MIAA Basketball Championship presented by Southern Bank. FHSU now holds a rating of .183 (up from .152 a week ago), while the Gorillas' rating is .191. Missouri Western is third with a rating of .151, while UNK is fourth at .093. This rating system assigns point values to wins and losses based on opponent and location, etc.

Fort Hays State continues to rank among the nation's best in numerous categories, including assist/turnover ratio (second, 1.39), assists per game (fourth, 18.6), scoring margin (fifth, plus-19.0), field goal percentage (sixth, 46.1 percent), winning percentage (seventh, 92.3 percent) and field goal percentage defense (11th, 34.7 percent).

After opening the year with 12-straight wins and winning 11 in a row since January 18, the Tigers now have multiple 10-game winning streaks in a season for the third time in team history (1990-91, 2018-19). This is the 16th double-digit winning streak in school history.

Fort Hays State has surpassed the 20-win plateau for a 14th-consecutive season, the longest active streak in DII (Drury second with 11) and the fifth-longest streak in all NCAA women's basketball. The next-best stretch in the MIAA is just three seasons (MWSU, MSSU, PSU).Fort Hays State leads Division II in attendance this season, averaging 2,105 fans per home contest. That total would rank 84th in Division I and is more than 282 DI programs.

Brooke Loewe is now the school's single-season assists leader with 177 this season, breaking a 34-year old record (1990-91). She has dished out 10 or more assists five times this season, a feat only one other MIAA player has accomplished more than once.

Fort Hays State has had a Tiger student-athlete earn MIAA Athlete of the Week honors four times this season, more than any other school in the league (UCM, PSU three each). Both Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;and Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;have earned the recognition two times.

DeGarmo has been named MIAA Athlete of the week each of the last two weeks, averaging 18.3 points and 11.0 rebounds over the last four games. She earned the award on February 17 after posting a pair of double-doubles in road wins at Emporia State (13p, 14r) and Newman (16p, 10r), averaging 14.5 ppg and 12.0 rpg for the week. She then put up season-highs with 27 points and 15 rebounds against Missouri Southern before tallying 17 points and five rebounds against No. 5 Pittsburg State to earn the award on February 24, averaging 22.0 points and 10.0 rebounds for the week. She has now earned the conference's weekly award seven times in her career and has done so multiple times in each of the last three seasons.

Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;has also been named MIAA Athlete of the Week twice this season. The graduate student picked up the first honor of the season in November after averaging 24.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 2.5 steals per game in a pair of wins in St. Joseph, Mo. The graduate student opened the year with 29 points against Augustana, including 25 after halftime. She then averaged 24.5 points on 76 percent shooting (19-of-25) in a pair of home wins in February, including 22 points against NSU and 27 and four blocks against UAFS.

The Tigers have both played and beaten UNK more than any other school in program history. Fort Hays State is 62-42 all-time against Nebraska-Kearney, including a 36-15 record at home and wins in the last two meetings. The Tigers are 2-0 against the Lopers under head coach talia Kahrs, including a 1-0 record at home. The Tigers are 18-6 against UNK in regular season MIAA meetings and 5-3 in games that reach overtime, including wins in the last five overtime meetings.

The Lopers enter the week 19-7 overall and 12-5 in conference action, including a 7-4 record on the road. Nebraska-Kearney averages 72.5 points per night, sixth-best in the MIAA. Their scoring margin of plus-14.9 is third-best in the league. The Lopers average 26.8 points off the bench per game, best in the league and 25th-best in Division II. Jillian Aschoff leads a balanced offense with just 11.0 points per game, however five players average at least nine points per game with two more scoring more than six points per outing. Bailee Sobczak leads the conference with 3.2 offensive rebounds per game.

DODGE CITY - Hays High's final road trip of the regular season was trip to Dodge City on Tuesday. and the Indians came away with the season sweep of the Red Demons.

GIRLS: #4 Hays 60, Dodge City 15 Hays used a big run in each of the first two quarter to create separation from Dodge City on the way to a 60-15 victory.

Hays scored the first six points of the game only to be countered by nine straight by Dodge City. The Indians followed that run up with one of their own. This time a 10-0 run gave the Indians 16-9 advantage.

Hays led 20-14 heading into the second quarter. The Red Demons controlled that frame outscoring Hays 17-11. The Indians led 27-24 but turned the ball over their next five possessions. Dodge City had just enough punch to score six straight points for a 30-27 advantage.

Hays broke a three and a half minute scoring drought&nbsp; with four straight points regaining a 31-30 edge. The Red Demons made one of two free throws to tie the game at 31 at halftime.

Hays scored the first five points of the second half and never trailed again. Dawson Ruder scored all five of those points on a night when he scored a career high 27.

Dodge City pulled within two points at 38-36 on a pair of free throws with 2:48 left in the third quarter. The remainder of the time Hays outscored Dodge City 8-2 to take a 46-38 lead going to the fourth quarter.

Hays took an early ten point lead in the fourth quarter before the Red Demons made one more push. They scored back-to-back field goals to get within six at 48-42 with 6:45 remaining.

The Indians dominated the remainder of the game ending it with a 14-5 run for the 62-47 victory.

Hays (12-7, 6-1) shot 50% from the field and held a 14 rebound margin. Dodge City (5-14, 2-5) shot 7 of 21 in the second half after 12 of 23 in the first.

Hays will host Great Bend on Friday to finish the regular season on Senior Night.

The Tigers defeated Northern State 5-2 and then Minot State 4-0.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/morgan-schmidt/8190">Morgan Schmidt</a>&nbsp;tied her career high for strikeouts in a game with 12 in the final contest of the tournament.

Fort Hays State 5, Northern State 2 The Tigers used a four-run rally in the sixth inning to get past Northern State in their first contest of the day. FHSU initially went up 1-0 in the first inning on a&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/madison-pierce/8188">Madison Pierce</a>&nbsp;RBI single, but a two-run home run put the Wolves on top 2-1 in the bottom of the third. The Tigers tied the game in the sixth on a clutch RBI single by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilliana-ramirez-johnson/8189">Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson</a>&nbsp;and then moments later&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/audrey-gillespie/8185">Audrey Gillespie</a>&nbsp;cleared all Tigers off the bases with a 3-RBI double.

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved up in both national polls after picking up a pair of wins last week, including one win over a top five team in the country. The Tigers enter the final week of the regular season ranked sixth in the latest WBCA NCAA Division II Coaches Poll while FHSU moved up to No. 10 in the latest D2CSC Media Poll, both released Tuesday.

Now 24-2 on the year, the Tigers accumulated 466 points in the voting process of the coaches poll, up from 438 when they were ranked seventh last week. FHSU is just eight points behind fourth-ranked Texas-Tyler.

This is the second time the Tigers have been ranked sixth this season after also occupying that spot in December. It is the ninth time the Tigers have been slotted sixth in the coaches poll all-time, with FHSU picking up a 12-2 record when ranked sixth.

Fort Hays State has been in the WBCA Top 25 118 times during the DII era, including 78 appearances in the top 10. The Tigers are 181-45 when ranked and 128-26 when listed in the top 10.The Tigers are now the highest-ranked MIAA team in the country after knocking off then-No. 5 Pittsburg State on Saturday. The Gorillas dipped to No. 10 this week, with region rival Concordia-St. Paul right behind at No. 11.

Fort Hays State wraps up the regular season this week with two games against Nebraska-Kearney. The Tigers and Lopers will first meet in Hays on Wednesday (Feb. 26) beginning at 5:30 p.m. before facing off three days later in Kearney beginning at 2 p.m.

The Tigers enter the final week of the regular season ranked sixth in the latest WBCA NCAA Division II Coaches Poll while FHSU moved up to No. 10 in the latest D2CSC Media Poll, both released Tuesday.Now 24-2 on the year, the Tigers accumulated 466 points in the voting process of the coaches poll, up from 438 when they were ranked seventh last week. FHSU is just eight points behind fourth-ranked Texas-Tyler.This is the second time the Tigers have been ranked sixth this season after also occupying that spot in December. It is the ninth time the Tigers have been slotted sixth in the coaches poll all-time, with FHSU picking up a 12-2 record when ranked sixth.Fort Hays State has been in the WBCA Top 25 118 times during the DII era, including 78 appearances in the top 10. 🏀 Tiger women move into top-10 of both national polls

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State baseball senior Cade Flaherty&nbsp;has been named this week's MIAA Pitcher of the Week, announced Tuesday (Feb. 25) by the league office.

Flaherty tossed a complete game five-hitter Sunday afternoon (Feb. 23), helping the Tigers sweep Arkansas-Fort Smith in the first conference series of the season. The senior matched his career high with 10 strikeouts in the game while allowing Lion hitters to post a batting average of .172. Flaherty allowed more than one runner in an inning only once.

This is the second time Flaherty has earned the conference's weekly honor in his career, also doing so last February (2/19/24). He is the second Tiger to earn a weekly recognition from the league office this season after Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;was named the first MIAA Hitter of the Week of 2025. Fort Hays State is the only school in the conference to earn both a Hitter of the Week and Pitcher of the Week recognition so far this season.

The Tigers will return to Larks Park for its next nine games beginning this weekend (Feb. 28-March 2) when FHSU hosts Missouri Western. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.

Dickinson made 13 of 18 shots and 6 of 10 free throws for the Jayhawks (19-9, 10-7 Big 12 Conference), who fell out of the AP Top 25 for the first time since Feb. 8, 2021, after losing three of five before arriving in Boulder. It was the 12th double-double this season for Dickinson.

KJ Adams had 15 points for Kansas and Rylan Griffen scored 10.

Bangot Dak had 16 points on 7-for-10 shooting to lead the Buffaloes (11-17, 2-15), who had won two of three following a 13-game losing streak. Julian Hammond III scored 11.

Kansas only trailed in the game for 20 seconds, but the Buffaloes wouldn't go away.

Dickinson had 15 points by halftime to help the Jayhawks take a 37-32 lead.

Colorado took its only lead when Hammond scored in the paint to make it 39-38 with 15:39 remaining. Dickinson answered with a jumper and a three-point play and Kansas never trailed again. FORT SMITH, Ark. - The Fort Hays State baseball team completed a series sweep of Arkansas-Fort Smith on Monday at Crowder Field thanks to some late-inning heroics. The Tigers improved to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in MIAA play with the 13-12 win, while the Lions are now 5-7 overall and 0-3 in conference action.

While 10 of Fort Hays State's runs came on four home runs, the two biggest runs came on ninth-inning single when they were down to their last strike.

The Lions quickly scored with two runs in the first, but FHSU answered right back when Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;clubbed a two-run home run to left center in the top of the second. Fort Smith responded with two runs on three hits in the home half of the inning, taking a 4-2 lead that they would hold until the fifth when Isaiah Ural&nbsp;tied things with another two-run bomb.

The home team regained the lead once again in the bottom of the fifth, but it didn't last for long as Luis Ayala&nbsp;led off the sixth with a solo home run to tie the score at five. A throwing error on the potential final out of the inning gave FHSU its first lead of the game before DeGarmo hit his second home run of the game, this time a grand slam to put the Tigers up 10-5.

Fort Hays State added another run in the top of the seventh with a Tony Moore&nbsp;RBI single, putting the Tigers up six with nine outs to go. The Lions roared back with six runs on three hits and three walks in the seventh inning, tying the score at 11. UAFS then regained the lead, 12-11, with two hits and a walk in the bottom of the eighth.

Zane Knox led off the ninth with a walk before Cooper Howell&nbsp;reached on an infield single with one out. A sacrifice bunt then put the pair in scoring position with two outs. Moore came through with another RBI single, sending a 1-2 pitch back up the middle to plate a pair and give the Tigers a 13-12 lead.

After picking up a three-inning save on Sunday, Branden Chavez&nbsp;came out of the pen to retire the side in order and claim his fourth save of the season. The sophomore opened the frame with a strikeout before recording a pair of groundouts to seal the win.

DeGarmo collected six RBI while going 3-for-5 at the dish, giving him nine RBI for the weekend. Moore, Ural and Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;all collected two hits each, with Moore reaching base four times thanks to two hits and two walks.

⚾ Tigers complete series sweep of Arkansas-Fort Smith

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State women's basketball graduate student Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;has been named MIAA Athlete of the Week presented by Southern Bank for a second-consecutive week, announced Monday by the league office.

DeGarmo averaged a double-double for the second week in a row, putting up 22.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in a pair of home wins over Missouri Southern and fifth-ranked Pittsburg State. She hit 58 percent from the floor for the week (18-of-31) while going a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.

The Maize, Kan. native opened the week with a pair of season highs, totaling 27 points and 15 rebounds in a 64-55 win over MSSU. She then added 17 points and five rebounds in a 76-60 win over Pittsburg State.

DeGarmo now has double-doubles in three of the last four games, averaging 18.3 points and 11.0 rebounds over that span to take home the conference weekly honor in back-to-back weeks.

This is the seventh time DeGarmo has earned the league's weekly award in her career. Teammate&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/olivia-hollenbeck/8329">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;has also earned the award twice this season, giving the Tigers four weekly honors this year, more than any other school in the league.

🏀 DeGarmo picks up second straight MIAA weekly honor

Tyler Stein says there’s nothing more exhilarating than swimming well at the state swim meet.

But he found out this weekend that watching youngsters he is coaching excel in the pool might be even better.

At this past weekend’s Class 5-1A Swimming and Diving State Championships in Lenexa, Coach Stein’s Hays High boys’ swim team closed out a historical season by breaking two school records.

“This was completely different as a coach,” said Stein, a former all-state swimmer in high school in his first year as the Indians’ coach. “I was concerned about them and not about myself, and to see how excited they were after breaking those records was so cool. It’s something they will remember the rest of their lives.”

In the final race of the day – the 400-yard freestyle relay – Hays High clipped more than five seconds off its time from the previous day in the preliminaries.

Their time of 3 minutes, 30.5 seconds in the finals erased the old school record of 3:34.17 that had stood for 12 years.

That not only was good enough to win the consolation finals with their ninth-place finish, but it also would have earned them the seventh-place medal had they been swimming in the medal round.

At state, the top eight times from the first day of competition advance to the last day’s medal round, while the 9th- through 16th-place times swim the consolation finals.

The Indians’ 400-yard relay foursome of senior Marshall Sook, sophomore Cedric Durr, and juniors Karsen Flaska and Chase Zadina turned in its best time to date (3:35.03) in Friday’s prelims.

That was the ninth-best prelim time that saw them finish just one place out of making the medal round. They then shattered the school record the next day.

“To erase that many seconds off a relay time in one day’s time is insane,” Stein said. “They were so pumped.”

Those same four swimmers also broke the school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay, placing 11th overall at state with a time of 1:34.39. That bettered the old mark of 1:34.93 set in 2014.

Sook closed out an unforgettable senior season, swimming personal-best times in two individual events – placing 13th overall in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.98 seconds and 12th in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.54.

Despite not having any swimmers in the top eight, the Indians still placed 14th in team scoring among the 44 participating schools.

“We had five swimmers competing at state, and some of those teams were triple that size – or more,” Stein said. “I couldn’t be more proud of them. It was another reminder of how amazing this season was for us.”

And anyone associated with the 2025 season would have to agree.

Stein, a Fort Hays State University student majoring in finance, took over the Indians’ head coaching job just a few weeks before the start of the season.

Under his guidance, the Indians started to swim better every meet, bettering their times each time out.

Just one year ago, the Indians took just one relay team to state after reaching a state-consideration time.

This year’s team closed out the regular season with an impressive showing at the Western Athletic Conference Championships, finishing second in team scoring with their small roster while winning eight of the 11 events and bringing home 14 gold medals.

Throughout those last few weeks, the Indians qualified all three relay teams for state, along with Sook’s two individual events.

Junior Noah Schaeffer joined Flaska, Zadina and Durr on the 200-yard medley relay team at state that just missed the consolation finals with their 19th-place finish in the prelims.

“I’m excited for that relay team next year to see what they will be able to do,” Stein said, “because they will all be back.”

First, though, he is looking forward to coaching the HHS girls’ team this spring.

It’s safe to say that Stein has discovered something even more rewarding than winning a race himself.

TOPEKA, Kan. – Fort Hays State Softball improved to 6-4 overall on the season with a pair of wins at the Washburn Invitational on Monday. The Tigers defeated Maryville University 5-3 and then Minnesota Crookston 9-1. FHSU did not surrender any earned runs on the day. The Tigers are 3-1 so far at the event and play two more on Tuesday.

Fort Hays State 5, Maryville 3 The Tigers had a come-from-behind win in their first contest of the day. Maryville took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, but the Tigers immediately rallied past with three runs in the fourth. They added a pair in the sixth to go up 5-2 and then allowed just one more in the bottom half of the inning.

She moved to 3-2 overall on the season.

Fort Hays State 9, Minnesota Crookston 1 (6 inn.) A big five-run third inning helped Fort Hays State run away with a run-rule win in six innings over Minnesota Crookston. The Tigers never trailed, scoring one in the first, five in the third, two in the fifth, and then one in the sixth to win in walk-off fashion.

A dropped fly ball in the first inning allowed the Tigers to score a run with two outs. Fort Hays State will take on Northern State (10 a.m.) and Minot State (2 p.m.) on Tuesday to wrap up their tournament schedule.
