KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The trio of Kaleb Hammeke, Elijah Nnanabu and Bjarni Jonsson&nbsp;earned All-MIAA honors for a second straight year as a group, announced Tuesday. Jonsson is the first three-time MIAA All-Defensive Team selection in program history and is the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year, while Hammeke is now a four-time All-MIAA selection and Nnanabu is a two-time All-MIAA selection.

Hammeke headlines the three Tigers on the 2023-24 All-MIAA Team by earning first-team honors for the second-straight year. Nnanabu elevated to a second-team selection this year after an honorable mention pick last year. Jonsson continued his presence as one of the elite defenders in the conference for the third straight year and pocketed a second-straight honorable mention pick in the process.

Not only is Jonsson the first three-time MIAA All-Defensive Team selection in program history, he is also the first three-time All-Defensive Team selection of any sort in the program's history. Jonsson becomes the third MIAA Defensive Player of the Year in FHSU men's basketball history, the first to earn the honor since Matt Simmons in 2011-12. Hammeke is now just the sixth four-time All-MIAA selection in Fort Hays State men's basketball history, joining Richard Staab (1933-37), Elmer Johnson (1936-40), Dean Larson (1958-62), Raymond Lee (1982-86), and Craig Nicholson (2012-16). Hammeke joins Lee and Nicholson as a special group of Tigers to win a conference Freshman of the Year award and be a four-time all-conference selection. Nnanabu earned his second All-MIAA selection, this time as a second-team pick by MIAA coaches. Nnanabu finished the regular season with a 12.8 points per game average and led the team in rebounds at 5.4 per game. He has the most field goals made among his team with 137 entering tournament play. He added 2.0 assists per contest as well.

Jonsson is now a two-time All-MIAA Honorable Mention pick after earning the same honor as season ago. To go with his elite defensive status, Jonsson gives the Tigers a strong all-around presence averaging 7.7 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, while making 37 3-point field goals for the season.

🏀 Trio of Tigers named All-MIAA, Jonsson Defensive Player of the Year

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Katie Wagner&nbsp;has been named the 2023-24 MIAA Women's Basketball Player of the Year, announced Tuesday by the league office. The Maize, Kan. native also earned a spot on the MIAA All-Defensive Team in addition to first team all-conference honors, while Olivia Hollenbgeck received third team All-MIAA recognition for a second year in a row.

Wagner has been a consistent force all season long, ranking third in the MIAA in scoring with 16.9 points per game, fifth in rebounding with 8.3 rebounds per game and second in steals with 2.3 steals per game. She is the only player in the conference to rank in the top five in three primary statistical categories (points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks).The fourth-year junior turned things up a notch in conference play, ranking second in the league with 17.0 points against MIAA opponents, third with 8.6 rebounds when playing conference rivals and second with 2.4 steals in league games.

Wagner scored in double figures 25 times in 28 games, including nine games with at least 20 points. She was one of two players in the conference to score at least 30 points multiple times this season. Wagner tallied 10 double-doubles and distributed three or more assists 16 times.

Wagner is the third Tiger to earn the conference's top honor, joining Kate Lehman (2014-15) and Tatyana Legette (2018-19). She is the 11th Tiger to earn first team All-MIAA honors and just the third to do so multiple times (Kate Lehman 2013, 2014, 2015; Jaden Hobbs 2021, 2022). Additionally, Wagner is the 10th Tiger to be listed on the MIAA All-Defensive team.

This is Wagner's third appearance on the All-MIAA postseason honors list. She was also a first team selection last year after receiving second team accolades in 2021-22.Hollenbeck picked up All-MIAA honors for the fourth time in her career, becoming just the fourth player in program history to earn all-conference honors in four-consecutive seasons (Annette Wiles, Shauna Porter, Kate Lehman). 🏀 FHSU's Wagner named MIAA Player of the Year, Hollenbeck third team

NEW ORLEANS - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team ranks 18th in the latest USTFCCCA NCAA Division II rating index, released Tuesday by the coaches association.

Men's Track &amp; Field currently have broken four school records this season while notching 32 provisional marks. The Tiger men have seven student-athletes that have qualified for nationals, including Hayden Albright. Albright qualified individually in the 400m dash thanks to his school-record time of 47.47, tenth-best in Division II this year. Ethan Lang&nbsp;has two All-American honors in his career as he looks to improve on his historic senior season. Lang emerged as a standout performer in the men's 600y event at the MIAA Championships, capturing his third conference championship in the 600y. Lang is also tied for the sixth best 800m time in the county, clocking in at 1:49.40, fast enough for a school record in the 800m. Both Albright and Lang will compete in the distance medley relay (DMR) team along with Trevor Medina and Grant Bradley at the NCAA Championships. Fort Hays State's DMR time of 9:43.55 ranks seventh in Division II and broke another school record on the season.

Jacob Clark&nbsp;returns to the national meet in the pole vault thanks to a top clearance of 16-8.75 this season, 11th best nationally. Clark earned All-American honors indoors two years in a row as he looks to add another All-American under his belt. Dayton Williams&nbsp;will compete in the high jump as he was tied for the 16th best jump in Division II this season. He achieved a jump of 6-11.5 earlier this season and ranks second in program history with this mark. Nolan Churchman, two time indoor All-American, will compete in the heptathlon. The junior ranks eighth in the country this season with a top point total of 5,326.

Keamonie Archie, who currently holds the second-best long jump in school history with a distance at 23-11.75 feet. Archie has only competed in two events as a freshman and looks to continue to improve the FHSU men's field team. Another young Tiger that improved the team is Avrey Albright who has been included in relay teams and sprints the whole season and has improved the sprints team as a freshman. Dean Clark, a freshman jumper, won the long jump at the UNK Pre-Holiday Classic earlier this season with a distance of 23-3.5. Emery Wolfe, another freshman, was a top five finisher in two events at the KSU Steve Miller Invitational that included Division I athletes.

The Tiger men currently rank sixth in the central region as the team had a successful weekend at the MIAA Championships a couple weekends ago. The men placed fourth, notching eight provisionals as well as 3 All-MIAA honors.

Fort Hays State's DMR time of 9:43.55 ranks seventh in Division II and broke another school record on the season.Jacob Clark&nbsp;returns to the national meet in the pole vault thanks to a top clearance of 16-8.75 this season, 11th best nationally. Clark earned All-American honors indoors two years in a row as he looks to add another All-American under his belt. Dayton Williams&nbsp;will compete in the high jump as he was tied for the 16th best jump in Division II this season. He achieved a jump of 6-11.5 earlier this season and ranks second in program history with this mark. Nolan Churchman, two time indoor All-American, will compete in the heptathlon. The junior ranks eighth in the country this season with a top point total of 5,326.Keamonie Archie, who currently holds the second-best long jump in school history with a distance at 23-11.75 feet. Archie has only competed in two events as a freshman and looks to continue to improve the FHSU men's field team. Another young Tiger that improved the team is Avrey Albright who has been included in relay teams and sprints the whole season and has improved the sprints team as a freshman. Dean Clark, a freshman jumper, won the long jump at the UNK Pre-Holiday Classic earlier this season with a distance of 23-3.5. Emery Wolfe, another freshman, was a top five finisher in two events at the KSU Steve Miller Invitational that included Division I athletes.The Tiger men currently rank sixth in the central region as the team had a successful weekend at the MIAA Championships a couple weekends ago. MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Senior Tylor Perry&nbsp;was selected as the Big 12 Player of the Week on Monday afternoon (March 4) after averaging 27.5 points per game against West Virginia and Cincinnati last week.

Perry averaged 27.5 points on 63.6 percent shooting (14-of-22), including 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from 3-point range, and 93.8 percent (15-of-16) from the free throw line in helping K-State to a 94-90 overtime win over West Virginia at home Feb. 26 and a narrow 74-72 loss at Cincinnati March 2. He also averaged 4.5 assists and 4 rebounds in 40 minutes per game in the 2 contests. It marked Perry's team-leading ninth and 10th&nbsp;20-point games of the season, as he has scored 20 or more points in 5 of the last 9 games.

Perry scored his 54 total points on just 22 field goal attempts, tying his season-high for third and fourth time this season with 6 made 3-pointers in each contest.

The senior guard scored a season-high 29 points in the Wildcats' Division I-record seventh overtime win of the season on just 12 shots, finishing 7-of-12 from the field, including 6-of-11 from 3-point range, to go with a 9-of-10 effort from the free throw line. He entered Saturday's game ranked fifth in rebounding in the NAIA with an 11.3 average. He's also averages 17.3 points while Murdock averages 18.0 points and 4.9 assists.</li><li>Murdock scored 16 and had Littlejohn 15 and 10 rebounds in the first game against OKWU.&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/85253bfd-8934-43eb-8f83-f57aef7a242f?elinkdata=6647" target="_blank">Izaiah Hale</a>&nbsp;score 14 but the Coyotes shot just 34.4 percent and were outrebounded 49-39.</li><li>KWU has won six in a row and eight of nine including tournament victories over Ottawa in the quarterfinals and Southwestern.</li><li>Monday's championship will be the first for Wesleyan since the tournament moved to Hartman Arena. USM led 44-40 at halftime but OKWU won the second half 50-30 by shooting 56.7 percent and limiting the Spires to 32 percent after they shot 65.4 percent the first half.</li><li>Jaden Lietzke, OKWU's All-America center, led the way with 26 points and 10 rebounds while Kaleb Stokes had 16 points and eight rebounds and guard Dylan Phillip 14 points.</li><li>The Eagles won the rebounding battle 35-24 and are outrebounding their opponents by 10.2 per game. They also average just over 14 offensive rebounds.</li><li>Lietzke had 23 points and 16 rebounds in the victory over KWU in January. He averages 17 points and eight rebounds while point guard DJ Talton Jr. averages 14.7 points and 5.3 assists and Stokes 10.1 points and 6.7 rebounds.</li><li>The Eagles' two losses this season were to Southwestern on December 2 in Bartlesville and Evangel on February 24 in Springfield, Mo.</li><li>OKWU averages 78 points and allows 64.5. The Eagles are shooting 46 percent overall, 29.6 percent from beyond the 3-point line. They struggle collectively at the free throw line, just 58.6 percent.</li>

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Fort Hays State baseball team dropped Sunday's series finale at Rogers State, losing 11-4. The Tigers (12-6, 2-4 MIAA) jumped out to a quick lead, but the Hillcats (13-4, 5-1 MIAA) answered right back in the bottom of the first before taking the lead for good in the second.

Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;led things off with a triple to the warning track in left field before coming in to score the first run of the game on an RBI groundout from Elliott Herrmann. The Hillcats responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on two hits and three free bases.

Fort Hays State tied things up in the next half inning when Zane Knox&nbsp;was hit by a pitch to lead things off. Singles from Justin Lipka&nbsp;and Sebastian Burgos&nbsp;loaded the bases before Cesas Saavedra&nbsp;drew a two-out walk to tie the score at two. The Hillcats again scored two runs in the bottom of the second, retaking the lead, 4-2.

Rogers State pushed the lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the third after scoring four runs on two singles and two free bases. Trailing by six, the Tigers left a pair on base in the fourth before plating a pair in the top of the fifth. Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;led off with a bunt single before Herrmann beat out an infield single to short. Jose Cintron&nbsp;followed by drawing a walk, loading the bases with no outs. Shaun Gomez&nbsp;plated a run two batters later with a single before Kyle Morrell&nbsp;lifted a sacrifice fly to left, helping FHSU close within 8-4.

The Tiger pitchers settled in after the third inning, recording four-straight scoreless innings before the Hillcats tacked on three more in the bottom of the eighth. The Tiger bats were unable to draw any closer, however, going down in order in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings before leaving a runner on in the ninth.

Burgos finished the day 2-for-4, while six other Tigers recorded one base hit on the day. Rafael Espinoza&nbsp;(2-1) got the start and went 2.0 innings, allowing four runs on four hits. Trevor Baugh&nbsp;struck out four batters in 5.0 innings of relief, surrendering two runs on four hits and one walk.

Fort Hays State will return home for to play five home games next week beginning Wednesday with a doubleheader against Upper Iowa beginning at 1 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

start offensively and an even faster start by the Plainville Cardinals as they come
up short, falling 60-50 Saturday in the 2A Oakley sub-state title game.

After a pair of early ties, the Plainville Cardinals closed
the first quarter on a 10-4 lead, for a 14-8 lead.

Plainville scored back-to-back field goals to start the
second quarter, extending the run to 14-4 for an 18-8 lead.

The Cardinals were able to maintain a 10-point for a good portion
of the second quarter. TMP was able to close with five when Jacob Seib finished
off a three-point play, making it 24-19 with a minute and a half left in the
first half.

But Plainville close the first half with a 27-19 lead.

After a three pointer for Plainville gave the Cardinals a
30-19 lead TMP’s Griffin Schumacher scored eight straight pulling the Monarchs
back within five a 32-27, but Plainville answered with a 14-5 run for a 46-32
lead heading into the final period.

In the fourth quarter TMP closed the gap to nine, at 46-37
on a Caden Dinkel three-pointer but they could never get closer as the
Cardinals went on to a 60-50 victory.

PUEBLO, Colo. - Fort Hays State men's wrestling junior Tereus Henry&nbsp;defended his Super Region VI championship Saturday, finishing 4-0 for a second year in a row to claim the title at 197 pounds.

With the regional championship, Henry locked in his third-consecutive trip to the NCAA DII Championships, held this year in Wichita, Kan. at Hartman Arena March 15-16.

Fort Hays State placed ninth as a team at regionals, compiling 23.5 team points.

Despite being seeded second in the 197-pound bracket, Henry was one of just four wrestlers in the 10-man bracket that drew a first-round match. The El Paso, Texas native took care of business against Adams State's Ben Tonnessen, recording takedowns in each the first and second period to secure an 8-3 decision.

Facing off with a fresh Laith Gilmore of San Francisco State, Henry dominated his way to the semifinals with an 8-0 major decision. After a scoreless first period, Henry recorded a quick escape and later managed a takedown in the second period before recording another takedown midway through the third period.

Henry used a narrow 2-1 decision against Colorado Mesa's Gabe Carranza to reach the finals and secure a trip to Wichita. Neither side scored in the first period before Henry opened the second period on top. He maintained control for 100 seconds to start the frame, racking up 1:40 of riding time. Henry then managed a quick escape in the third period and avoided any stress the rest of the way to lock up the win via the riding time point.

Henry then faced off with Nebraska-Kearney's Jackson Kinsella in the first-place bout. After Henry finished last season 3-0 against Kinsella, the Loper got the best of Henry in both of their meetings this season. Neither competitor managed a takedown in regulation, with both recording quick escapes in the second and third periods to leave the score tied at one after seven minutes. Henry came out on top in the first sudden victory period, recording a takedown 51 seconds into the extra period to secure the win.

Kevin Honus and Tony Caldwell&nbsp;were the lone Tigers to pick up wins via pin on the day, with each doing so in their first consolation bout. Marcell Dely&nbsp;racked up a 13-5 major decision in his first bout on the backside, while Juan Urbina&nbsp;also picked up a win in his first consolation bout with a 15-8 decision. All four Tigers finished the day 1-2. The rest of the team finished the tournament 0-2.

Nebraska-Kearney won the team championship with 143.5 points after qualifying eight individuals for nationals.

A returning All-American after placing third at last year's national meet, Henry will wrap up his junior season in two weeks when he makes the short trip to Hartman Arena to compete at his third national championship March 15-16.

CINCINNATI (AP) — John Newman III scored 13 of his 18 in the second half, Simas Lukosius hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 10.6 seconds left and Cincinnati blew a 13-point lead before beating Kansas State 74-72 Saturday night to snap a three-game skid.

Lukosius finished with 13 points. Day Day Thomas added 14 points, five assists and four steals and Jizzle James scored 10 for Cincinnati (17-12, 6-10 Big 12).

Jamille Reynolds converted a three-point play to give Cincinnati a 67-54 lead — matching the largest of the game — with 6:51 remaining. Tylor Perry answered with a 3-pointer 11 seconds later and added two free throws before he hit another 3 to cap a 10-0 run a little more than 2 minutes later. Carter was fouled on a 3-point shot and hit all three free throws to pull the Wildcats within two with 3:03 remaining and neither team scored again until Perry hit a straight-away 3 late in the shot clock that made it 72-71 with 1:16 left — Kansas State’s first lead since 8-5.

Neither team scored again until Lukosius came around a screen, caught a pass from James at hit the winner. Perry lost the ball out of bounds under the basket with 2.7 seconds to go and Newman was fouled with 1.7 left but missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Will McNair Jr. grabbed the rebound and called a timeout with 1.5 to go but the inbounds pass was deflected and rolled out of bounds as time expired.

Perry led the Wildcats with 26 points, including 17 in the second half. He made 7 of 10 from the field, 6 of 8 from 3-point range and 6 of 6 from the free-throw line. Jerrell Colbert added 15 points and Cam Carter scored 13.

Kansas State (17-12, 7-9) has lost eight of its last 11 games.

Colbert scored seven consecutive points for Kansas State capped by a dunk that made it 21-19 but the Bearcats scored 11 of the next 13. The Wildcats scored the final four points of the first half and the first four of the second to trim its deficit to 34-31 with 19 minutes to play but Newman scored nine points in a 13-4 run over the next 3 minutes.

The Bearcats are 8-1 all-time against Kansas State. The programs met seven times from 1958-68 and have played just twice since, the most recent coming when Cincinnati beat the Wildcats 75-61 in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament.

Kansas State visits No. 7 Kansas on Tuesday before wrapping up its regular season next Saturday at No. 8 Iowa State. Cincinnati plays Tuesday at Oklahoma and returns for its finale Saturday against West Virginia.

WICHITA - The Hays High girls faced off with Bishop Carroll for a 5A state tournament berth for a second consecutive year. As in 2023 the game was held at the Golden Eagles home gym as the higher seed.&nbsp;

The rematch was closer but went the way of Bishop Carroll 38-34.

Leading 11-7 to start the second quarter, Hays pushed their advantage to a game high six points at 13-7 on their first possession. Bishop Carroll returned fire with one of their three made three pointers in the game. A steal and layup by the Indians pushed the advantage back to five at 15-10 with 6:25 before halftime. Hays though didn't score rest of the half.

Bishop Carroll though was only able to scored five points during the same time frame. It was enough to tie the game at 15 a piece as the teams headed to the locker room.

Bishop Carroll led by one entering the fourth quarter. Neither team score score for the first two minutes until the Golden Eagles converted a traditional three point play for a 32-28 lead. The Indians pulled within one but again fell behind by five at 36-31.&nbsp;

Trailing 37-34 Hays turned the ball over on their next two possession. Bishop Carroll made one of four three throws in the final eleven seconds but it was enough for a 38-34 win.

Hays ends their season at 16-6. It is their first 15 win season since 2012. Bishop Carroll moves onto the 5A state tournament at 19-3.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Fort Hays State men's basketball team finished alone in second in the MIAA regular season standings and will be the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Tournament, presented by Southern Bank, next week in Kansas City at Municipal Auditorium. They will take on either No. 7 seed Emporia State or No. 10 seed Lincoln in the quarterfinals Thursday night (Mar. 7) at 8:15 pm.

The top 10 teams in the final regular season standings qualify for the tournament. The No. 7-through-10 seeds play first-round games on Wednesday, then the top six seeds will open play in the quarterfinals with two games on Thursday&nbsp;and two more on Friday. Both semifinal games will be played on Saturday before the championship game on Sunday.&nbsp;

This is the third-straight year the Tigers have finished among the top three in the conference. The Tigers were third each of the previous two seasons before finishing second this season. Fort Hays State finished the regular season 22-6 overall and 17-5 in the MIAA. The 17 wins matched the Tigers' most in MIAA play, also accomplished in 2021-22.

Emporia State finished the season 19-11 overall, 12-10 in the MIAA, while Lincoln was 14-14 overall and 9-13 in the MIAA.

If the Tigers advance to the semifinals on Saturday, they would again play at 8:15 pm. against either No. 3 seed Pittsburg State or No. 6 seed Central Oklahoma.

🏀 Tiger men earn No. 2 seed in MIAA Tournament

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team will enter next week's 2024 MIAA Women's Basketball Championship, presented by Southern Bank, as the No. 3 seed, announced Saturday by the league office.

The Tigers (22-6, 16-6 MIAA) finished the regular season in a three-way tie for second place in the conference standings, with Northwest Missouri State coming out of the tiebreak on top and the Tigers ranking in front of Missouri Southern.

The tournament will begin Wednesday (March 6) with first-round contests inside historic Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City, Mo. before quarterfinals are contested on Thursday and Friday (March 7-8).The Tigers will first face off with sixth-seeded Central Missouri in the last quarterfinal on Friday beginning at 2:15 p.m. If FHSU were to advance to the weekend, the Tigers would play in the second semifinal on Saturday (March 9) beginning at 2:15 p.m. before Sunday's championship (March 10) is slated for a 1 p.m. opening tip.

This is Fort Hays State's 13th-straight trip to the MIAA tournament and their 15th trip overall since joining the league in 2006. The Tigers are 20-12 all-time in the tournament, including a 3-2 record as the No. 3 seed, a 2-0 record against the No. 6 seed, a 10-4 record in the quarterfinals, a 2-5 record against Central Missouri and a 15-11 record inside Municipal Auditorium.

WACO, Texas (AP) — RayJ Dennis had 19 points and 10 assists, Jayden Nunn scored 18 points with consecutive fastbreak layups in a key run for No. 15 Baylor and the Bears beat seventh-ranked Kansas 82-74 on Saturday, handing the Jayhawks consecutive losses for the first time this season.

Yves Missi added 17 points and fellow freshman Ja'Kobe Walter had 11 for the Bears (21-8, 10-6 Big 12).

Nunn first drove the length of the court with 13:49 left after grabbing a defensive rebound. Then after 7-foot freshman Missi blocked a Kansas shot, Dennis passed ahead to a breaking Nunn for another layup. Those baskets 25 seconds apart ignited a 13-2 run that pushed Baylor's lead from one to 12 with 10 minutes left.

Big 12 scoring leader Kevin McCullar Jr., in his return to the lineup after missing four of the previous five games with a bone bruise in his knee, and Hunter Dickinson had 20 points each for Kansas (21-8, 9-7), which was coming off a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-byu-score-40b8e4f3cac4171a55f4a1df95452c20">76-68 loss at home to Big 12 newcomer BYU</a>. Dajuan Harris had 12 points and nine assists.

The Bears had their largest lead before halftime at 31-24 after Dennis made a 3-pointer with 3 1/2 minutes left, but they needed his jumper with 28 seconds left to lead 35-34 at the break.

Kansas went on a 10-2 spurt in between those baskets by Dennis. The Jayhawks' streak started with two nifty assists by Harris, including a give-and-go break with McCullar, who had a steal. Harris' floater put the Jayhawks up 34-33.

Kansas: This is the first time the Jayhawks have had seven conference losses during coach Bill Self's 21 seasons. They have to win one of their next two games (vs. Kansas State and at No. 1 Houston) to extend their record streak of winning conference records to 35 seasons in a row.

Baylor: The Bears are a national-best 32-15 against AP Top 25 opponents the past five seasons, and have won 13 of their last 18 against top 10 teams.

The Jayhawks scored 46 points in the paint, with 22 of those before halftime. The opening stretch included an emphatic two-handed dunk by Dickinson with just under six minutes left that gave him the last of his 10 points before the break. He scored Kansas’ first six points, including consecutive passes from Adams for a dunk and a layup.

Missi opened the scoring with a powerful dunk even with Adams’ hands in his face, and then did a spin move around Dickinson for a layup for their second basket.

Kansas' streak of 55 consecutive AP poll appearances in the top 10 will come to an end Monday, though the Jayhawks still will be ranked. That will leave top-ranked Houston with the longest active streak of top-10 appearances at 36 in a row.

Kansas is back home at Allen Fieldhouse to play Sunflower State rival Kansas State on Tuesday night. That comes after a week after the Jayhawks’ only home loss, to BYU.

Baylor has two games in a three-day stretch, in its home finale Monday night against Texas.
