HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Tennis had a chance for a late rally back in singles play against Newman University in the MIAA opener on Friday at the FHSU Tennis Courts. Down 3-1 in the match, the Tigers forced a decisive third set in three singles matches and took two of the three, falling just a point short in a 4-3 loss to the Jets on Friday. Newman moved to 11-6 overall, 1-0 MIAA, while FHSU moved to 6-5 overall, 0-1 MIAA.

The Tigers served notice they were going to give the Jets a fight early on when they won two of three doubles matches to take the first team point of the match. The No. 1 team of Shreethika Vangala and Fiorella Mendez, and the No. 2 team of Irina Alfonso and Ines Latorre&nbsp;were victorious. Vangala and Mendez posted a 6-3 win and the doubles team point came down to Alfonso and Latorre's match, which they won 7-6 by taking a tiebreak 7-3. The No. 3 team of Yone Pereiro&nbsp;and Grace Unruh&nbsp;put up a fight at No. 3, falling in a competitive 6-4 match.

Pereiro and Unruh would bounce back for the Tigers in singles play as the two that took their matches to make the final score just a one-point margin. After the Jets claimed the first three singles matches to complete and take a 3-1 lead, Pereiro, Unruh, and Mendez all went to third sets with a chance to give the Tigers a dramatic comeback, which they nearly pulled off.

Pereiro (No. 3 position) won her first set 6-4 and fell in the second set 6-2, but stormed back for a 6-4 win in the third. Unruh (No. 6 position) bounced back from a 6-2 first-set loss to win by the same score in the second and third sets. Mendez (No. 5) fell 6-4 in the first and bounced back with a 6-3 win to force the final set, but fell 6-1 in the decisive frame.

Vangala (No. 1), Alfonso (No. 2), and Latorre (No. 4) all fell in straight sets in singles. Alfonso generated the most points by winning two in each set against her opponent.

Heidi Lubbers and Hope Lubbers&nbsp;played an exhibition doubles match and fell 6-4. Bethan Gill and Ines Steeman&nbsp;each played exhibition singles matches. Gill lost 7-6 (7-4) and Steeman lost 6-3.

Fort Hays State has an opportunity to bounce back from their hard-fought loss on Saturday when they play host to Emporia State at 11 a.m. The Hornets will enter at 3-6 overall, 0-1 in the MIAA.&nbsp;&nbsp;

McPHERSON - The Hays High girls soccer team defeated Newton 2-1 Friday to bring home fifth-place at the 18th McPherson Invitational.

HAYS - Hays High had their season opener with Garden City postponed earlier in the week due to weather. Instead of being on the road for their first games the Indians hosted two-time defending 5A champs Valley Center Thursday at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex.

Game 1: Valley Center 11, Hays 5 Valley Center scored 11 unanswered runs after falling behind to beat Hays 11-5.

Avery Solida singled in a pair of runs in the bottom of the first for Hays as the Indians took a 2-0 lead. Hays had a chance to extend their lead in the bottom of the second with runners at second and third with one out but couldn't produce any additional support.

Valley Center took the lead with a four run top of the third inning when the first five batters of the inning reached base. The Hornets tacked on two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh for an 11-2 advantage.

Hays trailed 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning when they opened the frame with three consecutive singles. However, the Indians were once again turned away with out scoring.

The Indians did produce three runs in the bottom of the seventh when Dez Schmidt, Dani Willeford and Riley Dreher scored. Two of the runs crossed on a Lakyn Zimmerman single for the final of 11-5.

Riley Dreher worked all seven innings in taking the loss. Hays committed five errors.

Game 2: Valley Center 13, Hays 1 (5 innings) Hays once again held the lead after one inning only to watch Valley Center blow open the game for a 13-1 victory in five innings.

Valley Center was set down in order by sophomore starter Jaylee Summers in her first career start. Lakyn Zimmerman singled in a run as Dez Schmidt crossed the plate for a 1-0 advantage.

The rest of the game belonged to the visiting Hornets. Valley Center sent 13 batters to the plate and nine scored for a 9-1 advantage. The inning featured a pair of two-run homeruns and four walks.

Valley Center added four more runs in the top of the third for the final tally of 13-1. The Hornets hit three homeruns in the double header and now have 11 through the first six games of the season. They have 58 hits in those six games and 28 of them are for extra bases.

Summers took the loss in the game for Hays. Dreher and sophomore Lanie Becker also spent time in the circle.

The Indians start the season at 0-2 while Valley Center improves to 6-0.

Schmidt went 4-7 at the plate in the double header.&nbsp;

The Tigers (19-13, 7-11 MIAA) used a strong start from Ty Riley&nbsp;and a consistent offensive attack that saw all nine batters in the lineup record at least one hit and score at least one run.

Riley set the tone in the top of the first by retiring the side in order, one of three one-to-three innings in the game for the Griffons (14-16, 6-12 MIAA). Fort Hays State jumped in front right away when Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;led off the bottom of the inning with a double to left center. Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;followed with a single before Isaiah Ural&nbsp;drove in the first run with a groundout. Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;later made it 2-0 with an RBI single through the right side.

The Griffons had two runners in scoring position with one out in the second, but Riley worked out of the jam with a pop up and a strikeout. The Tigers then took complete control with a seven-run second inning.

Fort Hays State scored all seven runs with two outs in the inning, with Kreutzer working a two-out walk to load the bases. Ural followed with a single through the left side to plate Zane Knox and Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;before Herrmann added a two-RBI single of his own. After singling to start the inning, Knox delivered a three-RBI double to right later in the frame to push the lead to 9-0.

Missouri Western answered back with a pair of runs in the third, one of which was unearned, before the Tigers tacked on an unearned run of their own in the home half of the inning to make the score 10-2.Riley retired the side in the fourth and again in the sixth while working around a leadoff walk in the fifth inning, ultimately retiring 11-of-12 batters during a stretch spanning the end of the third through the start of the seventh.

Fort Hays State left men on base in the fourth and fifth innings before manufacturing four more runs on two hits in the sixth. Justin Lipka&nbsp;reached on an infield single before Knox drew a walk. A single from Sebastian Burgos&nbsp;loaded the bases for DeGarmo, who drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Saavedra then reached on an error that scored two runs before Kreutzer helped FHSU stretch the lead to 14-2 with an RBI groundout.

⚾ Tigers end skid with run-rule win over Missouri Western

McCOOK, Neb. - The Hays High boys and girls opened their track and field season at the Leroy Hoehner Invitational hosted by McCook High School Thursday. The boys finished second and the girls third.

The HHS girls had four individual champs. Kamryn McCall won the 100 metes, Arely Maldanado the 1600, Katie Linenberger the high jump and Lilian McGrath the long jump. HHS also won the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pablo Lopez pitched seven sparkling innings, Royce Lewis homered before leaving with an injury, and the Twins beat the Royals 4-1 to begin defense of their AL Central crown. 

Carlos Correa added three hits and two RBIs for Minnesota. That was plenty of support for Lopez, who gave up a homer to Maikel Garcia, the first batter he faced, but little else on a warm and sunny afternoon. He allowed four hits and struck out seven without a walk. 

Cole Ragans struck out nine, a Royals record for opening day, but still took the loss after pitching six strong innings..

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Kansas City Royals announced several roster moves this morning to finalize their Opening Day roster.

The Royals have placed four players on the Injured List, retroactive to March 25, including right-handed pitcher&nbsp;Carlos Hernández&nbsp;(right shoulder impingement), left-handed pitchers&nbsp;Jake Brentz&nbsp;(left hamstring strain) and&nbsp;Josh Taylor&nbsp;(left arm/biceps nerve injury) and infielder&nbsp;Michael Massey&nbsp;(low back strain).

Pitchers&nbsp;Kris Bubic&nbsp;(left elbow surgery) and&nbsp;Kyle Wright&nbsp;(right shoulder surgery) were placed on the 60-day Injured List on Feb. 23 and Feb. 17, respectively.

The Royals have 40 players on the Major League Reserve List.

Kansas City’s 26-man roster includes only seven players who made the Royals Opening Day roster last season, including pitchers&nbsp;Jordan Lyles&nbsp;and&nbsp;Brady Singer, catcher&nbsp;Salvador Perez, infielders&nbsp;Vinnie Pasquantino&nbsp;and&nbsp;Bobby Witt Jr.&nbsp;and outfielders&nbsp;Kyle Isbel&nbsp;and&nbsp;MJ Melendez.

The high school senior all-star wrestling event that featured 56 of the state’s top girls and boys wrestlers was held on Sunday, March 17th&nbsp;in Wichita, Kansas on the campus of Newman University.

“All of Kansas Shrine All-Star Events are produced with one big goal in mind; to make the biggest impact possible on the lives of the children served by Shriners Children’s Hospital,” said Brice Kesler, Executive Director. “We’re excited that a first-time event, like the KWCA Kansas Shrine Duals, was able to have such a significant impact towards that goal. Both the financial contribution generated and the opportunity to spread awareness for our cause, which was created by this event, will make a tremendous addition to the overall impact Kansas Shrine All-Star Events will have for Shriners Children’s Hospitals in 2024.”

KWCA Kansas Shrine Duals raises $25,000 for Shriners Children’s

HAYS - Hays High hosted their first games on the now all turn Hays High baseball field on Wednesday. Mother nature postponed the games with the Salina Central Mustangs on Monday.

Game 1:&nbsp;Hays 8, Salina 3 Hays High scored eight runs after falling behind 2-0 in an 8-3 defeat of Salina Central.&nbsp;

The Indians allowed two runs in the top of the second on a pair of hits and an error. Hays bounced back in the bottom of the third to tie the game. Charlie Roe and Tiger Johnson opened the inning with a pair of singles. Both scored on separate passed balls to tie the game.

Hays loaded the bases in the bottom of fifth inning with one out. The Indians didn't take advantage until there was two outs when a ball lifted off the bat of Corbin Werth was missed play in left field for an error allowing three runs to score.&nbsp;Ian McGuire, Carter Graham and Brett Schumacher all scored to take the lead at 5-2

The Indians' defense got out of an bases loaded one out jam in the top of the fifth when starting pitcher Tiger Johnson induced a pair of pop-ups.

Hays scored three more runs in the sixth inning. Johnny Cano, Charlie Roe and Johnson all scored to increase the lead to 8-2. Central added a final run in the top of the 7th for the final margin of 8-3.

Tiger Johnson recorded three hits and was also the winning pitcher. He went six and a third innings allowing three runs on seven hits. Johnson struck out a career high seven and walked three. Tanner Boxberger worked the final two outs.

Game 2:&nbsp;Hays 7, Salina Central 5 Hays High only scored in the first two innings but plated seven runners in that time for a 7-5 win.

The Indians scored three in the bottom of the first by taking advantage of two Central errors. Lex Lummus scored the first run. Jack Weimer singled in Brett Schumacher and Corbin Werth scored on the throw back to the infield for a 3-0 advantage.

Ian McGuire worked a perfect top of the first but was touched for three runs in the top of the second to tie the game.&nbsp;

Hays grabbed the advantage back in the bottom of the second by scoring four runs. Charlie Roe, Tiger Johnson and Cooper Sanders all reached to open the inning. Lummus drove in the go ahead run with a sacrifice fly that scored Roe. A Dylan Haselhorst ground out provided a 5-3 advantage when Johnson crossed the plate. Corbin Werth drove in Sanders on a single and Carter Graham put the lead at 7-3 on an error on the same play.

The Mustangs scored two more runs in the top of third for a 7-5 score. That would be the score through the rest of the game.&nbsp;

McGuire pitched the first three innings and took the win. Brendan Stults took over in the fourth inning and pitched three scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit and walked one batter while striking out two. Johnny Cano pitched the seventh for the save allowing just one hit and the defense provided three outs on ground balls.&nbsp;

Salina Central had five errors in the game.

Hays High opens the season 2-0 and will be traveling to Liberal on Friday to start Western Athletic Conference play. Salina Central has dropped three straight games and is 1-3.

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team dropped a midweek conference contest to the Newman Jets Wednesday afternoon at Larks Park by a score of 6-4. The Jets led 6-1 in the fifth before the Tigers closed within two runs, but FHSU was unable to complete the comeback despite having the tying run at bat or on base in each of the last three innings.

The visitors struck first with a two-run home run in the top of the first before Tiger starter Dylan Rinker&nbsp;settled in to retire seven batters in a row. FHSU closed within 2-1 by scoring an unearned run on a passed ball before Newman pushed across two more runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.

The Jets pushed the lead to 6-1 in the top of the fifth before the Tigers began to chip away in the bottom of the inning. Kuis Ayala&nbsp;opened the rally with a single before Cesar Saavedra and Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;both followed with two-out base hits, the latter of which drove in Saavedra to pull the Tigers within 6-2.

Tiger reliever Tanner Vaughn&nbsp;did all he could to keep the home team in the game, allowing just one hit in 6 innings of relief while allowing two runs and striking out five batters. The Tiger bats closed within two after the seventh inning stretch when Ayala again led off with a single. Kreutzer started another two-out rally by drawing a walk before Isaiah Ural&nbsp;drilled a double off the wall down the left-field line, plating one run. Zane Knox&nbsp;later worked a bases-loaded walk to drive in another run before the Jets got out of the jam with a diving play by the shortstop.

Ayala singled again in the eighth but was left on base and the Tigers had two baserunners on in the ninth, but the Newman relievers did just enough to secure the win.

Fort Hays State outhit the Jets by five, 9-4. Ayala was 3-for-3 with one run scored. Ural had two base hits and added one RBI. Rinker (5-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on three hits and three walks in 3.0 innings of work.

The Tigers will continue a seven-game homestand on Thursday (March 28) when FHSU opens a three-game set against Missouri Western beginning at 5 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Royals owner John Sherman said jokingly that he doesn't sleep very well under normal circumstances, so just imagine how his nights are going these days, with opening day on deck and a key vote for a downtown ballpark coming up next week.

The Royals play AL Central rival Minnesota on Thursday in their opening three-game series. After an offseason spending spree resulted in a revamped starting rotation, rebuilt bullpen and revitalized lineup, expectations in Kansas City are the highest in years for a club that lost 106 games last season.

“I'm trying not to play the expectation game,” Sherman said Wednesday before a public workout at Kauffman Stadium, the 51-year old building affectionately known as “the K” that the Royals want to replace with a downtown ballpark by 2028.

“We've done a lot to make this team better,” Sherman said. “I'm particularly encouraged by the mix of veterans in the clubhouse, the energy, setting an example for the younger guys. I would say my expectations are high. Time will tell.”

The biggest additions were starters Seth Lugo, who signed a $45 million, three-year deal, and Michael Wacha, who got a $32 million, two-year contract. They will fill out an rotation headlined by opening day starter Cole Ragans, who arrived last year in a trade with Texas, along with Brady Singer and Alec Marsh, who won the final job in spring training.

More money was spilled on the bullpen, where the Royals signed left-hander Will Smith — a three-time World Series champion — to a $5 million deal to close out games, and right-hander Chris Stratton to a $4 million deal to hold onto leads.

The biggest lineup addition is outfielder Hunter Renfroe, who signed a $13 million, two-year deal to provide some pop.

In all, just seven players are left on the 26-man roster from the club that struggled so mightily lsat season.

“That's a pretty significant revamp,” Sherman said.

One of those seven back? Bobby Witt Jr., the Royals' brilliant young shortstop, who committed to their future by signing an 11-year deal worth more than $288.7 million guaranteed to serve as their cornerstone going forward.

That deal also sent notice to weary Royals fans, many of whom will vote Tuesday, that they are serious about winning.

On the ballot in Jackson County, Missouri, is the renewal of a 3/8-cent sales tax that has been paying for the upkeep of Kauffman Stadium and neighboring Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Super Bowl-champion Chiefs.

The Royals want to use their share of future money to help pay for a $2 billion ballpark and entertainment district in a section of Kansas City known as the Crossroads, just south of the T-Mobile Center and Power &amp; Light District. The Chiefs plan to use their share to help with an $800 million renovation to Arrowhead Stadium after the 2026 World Cup is played there.

“What keeps me up at night? It's really thinking about this decision, this process for our ownership group,” Sherman said. “This is the most important thing we'll probably do while we are the stewards of this franchise.”

Neither the Royals nor the Chiefs have said what they would do should the ballot measure fail. But Sherman is doing his best to allay concerns among voters, which range from traffic to parking to what would happen to current Crossroads businesses. He spent last weekend knocking on doors, attending a church service and taking part in a neighborhood meeting in the 18th &amp; Vine district, which is near the Crossroads and home to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.

“I've got my ear to the ground,” said Sherman, who joked that his wife went to a restaurant in the Brookside neighborhood of Kansas City recently and “she had four yeses, three nos and a couple of maybes" in her informal polling.

Royals manager Matt Quatraro made his opinion clear, wearing a shirt Wednesday that read “Vote Yes on 1.”

“When you travel around to different cities in the league, the downtown ballparks put a ton of energy into the city. The players enjoy it. The fans soak that kind of thing in,” Quatraro said. “And what a new ballpark could bring our team — the amenities, the facilities underneath (Kauffman Stadium) are smaller. The operation is continuing to grow, and players need certain things that are hard to provide here. From a player-development standpoint, I think it would be a great thing for the team.”

In the meantime, Quatraro is much like Sherman in that his expectations are high for a better season in Kansas City.

“We came into last year with great expectations as well. We don't come into any season thinking it's not going to be good,” he said. “From a team concept, we expect these guys to go out and try to win every game.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For the third time this spring and the seventh time in her career Morgan Brasser&nbsp;&nbsp;has been named MIAA Women's Golfer of the Week, announced Wednesday by the conference office.

Brasser earned her second-consecutive victory at the weather-shortened 2024 Holiday Inn Express Classic, winning the event in St. Joseph, Mo. for a third year in a row. The senior fired an even-par 72 in the only round of the tournament on Monday, tying for first place.

The Andale, Kan. native recorded six birdies in the round, two more than any other player in the field. She led the field in par-5 scoring with a stroke average of 4.5 while tying for fourth in par-4 scoring and tying for 12th in par-3 scoring.

The senior birdied her final hole of the event to clinch the win, doing so for the second week in a row after winning the Midwest Spring Intercollegiate with a birdie on the 36th hole last week. Brasser now has six tournament wins in her career, one off the school record.

Brasser shared the weekly honor with Missouri Western's Florence Phan, with whom she was named co-champion at St. Joseph Country Club.

She now has seven top-10 finishes in nine events this season, including six top-five finishes. She improved her stroke average to 73.95 this season and 76.54 for her career.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Brasser now has six tournament wins in her career, one off the school record.Brasser shared the weekly honor with Missouri Western's Florence Phan, with whom she was named co-champion at St. Joseph Country Club.She now has seven top-10 finishes in nine events this season, including six top-five finishes. She improved her stroke average to 73.95 this season and 76.54 for her career.&nbsp;&nbsp;

TOPEKA - Eagle Radio's Dustin Armbruster is the 2024 recipient of the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Hod Humiston Award.

The award is given annually to a Kansas broadcaster who has made significant contributions to the field of sports broadcasting as well as work in the community.&nbsp; The award is named for Hod Humiston who was the first television sportscaster in Kansas when he did play-by-play coverage of college games for KTVH (now KWCH TV), channel 12, Wichita.

Armbruster becomes the fifth Humiston award recipient who has worked in the Hays market joining Bob Davis, Wyatt Thompson, Steve Webster and Gerard Wellbrock.

Armbruster serves as the play-by-play voice of Hays High athletics on 96.9, KFIX as well as an analyst on Fort Hays State broadcasts. He is co-host of the Bull Morning Show on on KKQY (101.9) and is the&nbsp; operations manager at Eagle Radio-Hays. Armbruster is a multi-award KAB Award winner and two-time recipient of the Kansas State High School Activities Association Oscar Stauffer Award (2022, 2013) for high school play-by-play.

Armbruster will receive the Hod Humiston Award on Tuesday, April 23 as part of the KAB's Sports Broadcast Seminar at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.

McPHERSON -&nbsp;The Hays High girls’
soccer team bounced back from a first-round loss to Topeka and defeated Salina South 3-2 Tuesday at the 18th annual McPherson Invitational girls soccer tournament. 

The Indians are now 2-1 on the young season and will
play Newton for fifth place at 3:00 p.m. Friday. The Railers beat
Collegiate 10-2 Tuesday. 

Maize South and Topeka High both won their semifinal matches and will play for
the title Friday night.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Morgan Brasser&nbsp;of Fort Hays State three-peated as champion of the Holiday Inn Express Classic, hosted by Missouri Western State University (March 25-26). Due to weather and course conditions, the second round of the tournament was canceled on Tuesday morning, thus making the first-day results the final results of the tournament. Brasser tied for the individual title with Florence Phan of Missouri Western, each shooting an even-par 72 on Monday.

As a team, the third-place finish tied the highest team placement for the Tiger women in a tournament since the 2021-22 season, when they finished third at the Oklahoma Baptist Fall Invitational in Shawnee, Okla. Fort Hays State led the tournament field as a team in par 4 scoring at just +6 as a team. The 317 team score the Tigers posted was their second-lowest round score of the season.

Brasser blazed her way to a tournament-best six birdies, two better than any other player in the field on Monday. After starting the day 2-over par through six holes, Brasser caught fire in her final 12, which included all six of her birdies, a pair of bogeys, and one double bogey. In the first three holes of her final 12, she carded a pair of birdies to get back to even before a pair of bogeys over the next four holes pushed her back to 2-over. She really turned it up a notch with four birdies over the final five holes, carding three-straight birdies before the double bogey, but finished strong with another birdie. Three of the four birdies over her final five holes were on par 5s and one was on a par 3. She played the par 5s in 3-under par, also best in the field on par 5s.

Brasser won the Holiday Inn Express Classic in 2022 with a two-round total of 2-over par, winning the tournament by five strokes. In 2023, she won the tournament by three strokes with a two-round total of even par. In her last five rounds in the event, she has shot rounds of 74, 72, 74, 70, and 72. She led the tournament field in birdies all three years, recording a total of 21 over her three-year reign as champion of the event.

Also turning in a top-10 finish was&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-golf/roster/shauna-lee/7687">Shauna Lee</a>, tying for 10th&nbsp;with a 5-over par 77. It was Lee's highest finish in a tournament since the 2021-22 season, when she finished alone in ninth at the aforementioned Oklahoma Baptist Fall Invitational. Lee carded a pair of birdies on Monday to go with 11 pars, three bogeys, and two double bogeys. Lee had a strong start with six straight pars and carded her two birdies over the final seven holes. A birdie on the last hole helped her jump up into a top-10 finish.
