The league's head coaches chose the Team Sportsmanship Awards based on a point system. This is the second time the Tigers have received the award after also winning in the spring of 2021. "These awards emphasize the NCAA Division II focus on sportsmanship and game environment," GAC Commissioner Will Prewitt said.&nbsp; "We could not be prouder of what these programs have put forth on the field and in ways that aren't necessarily reflected in the outcome." In 2012, The GAC's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee initiated a sportsmanship award to be presented for all team sports. The winning school will receive a banner similar to the one presented to GAC tournament championship winners. ⚽FHSU Men's Soccer Claims GAC Team Sportsmanship Award

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -&nbsp;The Fort Hays State athletic department had 101&nbsp;freshmen or transfer student-athletes listed on the 2022-23&nbsp;Newcomer MIAA Academic Honor Roll, released Thursday (June 29)&nbsp;by the league office. The Tiger football team led the way with 22 individuals recognized, while the women's track and field team and the baseball team both had 15 student-athletes listed on the honor roll. For the year, Fort Hays State saw 316 student-athletes listed on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll across the 16 sports that compete in the association. Fourteen Tigers maintained a perfect 4.00 GPA to earn the MIAA Academic Excellence Award, while five FHSU student-athlete received the Scholar-Athlete Award for maintaining a high GPA and earning All-MIAA honors. FHSU Athletics KANSAS CITY, Mo. -&nbsp;The Fort Hays State athletic department had 101&nbsp;freshmen or transfer student-athletes listed on the 2022-23&nbsp;Newcomer MIAA Academic Honor Roll, released Thursday (June 29)&nbsp;by the league office. The Tiger football team led the way with 22 individuals recognized, while the women's track and field team and the baseball team both had 15 student-athletes listed on the honor roll. For the year, Fort Hays State saw 316 student-athletes listed on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll across the 16 sports that compete in the association. Fourteen Tigers maintained a perfect 4.00 GPA to earn the MIAA Academic Excellence Award, while five FHSU student-athlete received the Scholar-Athlete Award for maintaining a high GPA and earning All-MIAA honors. Shepard was a second team All-MIAA selection as an outfielder, Puchino&nbsp;was a third team pick as a defender, Stuke was an honorable mention outfield pick, Hodsden earned five All-MIAA medals and one conference championship and Mader earned one All-MIAA medal in the outdoor 4x400m relay this season. Shepard and Puchino were two of 17 MIAA newcomers to earn both distinguished awards. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — José Ramírez hit his fifth career grand slam and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Kansas City Royals 14-1 on Wednesday night, moving into first place in the AL Central despite a losing record.

Ramírez lined a first-pitch cutter from Austin Cox into the left-field bullpen after Cox opened the third by allowing a single and two walks.

“He’s been one of the best hitters in the game for a number of years,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “The grand slam didn’t even seem like that bad of a pitch.”

“José stole the show, got us on the board early,” Josh Bell said. “A grand slam like that takes the pressure off and allows us to relax in the box. He’s an incredible player, makes the adjustments.”

Ramírez added an RBI double in the seventh and is hitting .411 (30 for 73) with 14 extra-base hits in his last 18 games.

Cleveland has won seven of nine to surpass Minnesota (40-42) in the division standings.

“We kind of expected this, day one of camp,” Bell said. “But we still have a ton of season left to play. We’ve got to take care of every last ballgame. We plan to do that.”

Bell’s two-run homer, a 464-foot drive into the right-field fountains, gave Cleveland a 6-0 lead in the fifth.

“It was cool to not hit a ball 4 feet in front of home," Bell said. "Hopefully, there will be more like that.”

Bell added a two-run double in the sixth as the Guardians batted around against James McArthur, a 26-year-old right-hander who made his major league debut.

Cleveland (39-40) played its second straight game without manager Terry Francona, who was hospitalized overnight and told by doctors to rest when he felt lightheaded before Tuesday’s game.

Bo Naylor connected for his first major league home run, a two-run line drive to left-center in the seven-run sixth, the Guardians’ biggest inning this season. He had a career-high three hits.

Nick Sandlin (4-3), the first of four relievers, got four outs. Starter Logan Allen worked out of several jams, allowing six runners over 3 2/3 innings.

“I thought his stuff was working really well,” Naylor said of Allen, who threw 98 pitches. “The pitch count got a little up. Great stuff. He competed in every situation he was a part of.”

Making his first major league start, Cox (0-1) allowed his first runs after 12 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to begin his career. He surrendered four runs, four hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings with two strikeouts.

“He was throwing the ball fine,” Quatraro said. “His command was a little erratic. He struggled to sustain the velocity in the heat. His pitch count got up there a little bit. They made him work hard there in the second and third. His stuff was fine. He just lost the zone a little bit.”

First baseman Matt Duffy pitched a scoreless ninth for the Royals, who have lost 10 of their last 12 series, with two splits.

Royals: 2B Nicky Lopez left after being hit by a pitch on his right hand.

With the Guardians seeking a three-game sweep, Shane Bieber (5-5, 3.69 ERA) will oppose Kansas City’s Zach Greinke (1-8, 5.31) on Thursday.

JUNCTION CITY – The Hays
Larks scored on a squeeze play in the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie then
added back-to-back home runs in the ninth and beat the Junction City Brigade
6-3 in a non-league game at Rathert Stadium Wednesday night.

The Larks (14-4) scored
single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to build a 3-0 lead. The Brigade (12-4) answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth then plated two in the sixth to
tie the game 3-3.

Westen Valasek doubled
and Peyton Ebbing followed with a walk with one out in the eighth. After both stole
a base, Bryson Evans laid down a successful bunt to drive in Valasek with the
go-ahead run.

Tyler LaRue and John
Ceccoli hit back-to-back home runs with one out in the ninth.

The Larks hit four solo home runs Wednesday. Tyler LaRue hit two, Will Pendergrass and John Ceccoli also went deep. It's the second time this season the Larks have hit four home runs in a game matching the four they hit June 9 vs. the Denver Cougars at Larks Park.

Luuk ter Beek (3-0) was
one of five relief pitchers for the Larks and picked up the win with one
scoreless inning of relief. Dayne Pengelly struck out two in the ninth and
picked up the save.

Trent Baker went 0-for-4
at the plate which ended his 12-game hit streak. It was the longest streak
since Dylan Dreiling hit safely in 17-straight games last season.

The Larks close out their
six-game road swing Friday in Augusta with a non-league game against the Kansas
Cannons. The Larks begin a six-game homestand Sunday vs. the Colorado Springs

TOPEKA, Kan. - The
 Kansas State High School Activities Association Executive Board 
approved several items during the June meeting. Starting in 2024, State 
Football will be held at three locations with three games taking place 
at each site. State soccer and wrestling will also see changes coming in
 the near future. The board also finalized the SB 113 Policy for home 
school and non-public school student participation.

Though
 the locations are to be determined at a later date, State Football for 
2024 will be held November 29th and 30th with one game on Friday and two
 games on Saturday at each location.

“The
 KSHSAA is at a point where we want to look at what combining sites in a
 few of our championships would look like. We believe it can add to the 
student and fan experience,” said Executive Director Bill Faflick. 
“Kansas has a rich tradition of great community support where we host 
championships. We do not anticipate that changing, it will just look 
slightly different depending on the year and selection of hosts.”

The soccer
 postseason will under go some adjustments as well. All championships 
will be played at one site starting in the fall of 2024. Adjustment to 
soccer postseason are:

Quarterfinals: -Seeding Criteria Remains the Same (East #1-4 &amp; West #1-4) - Higher seeds host - Play on Monday (Boys SCW 18 &amp; Girls SCW 47) - Postponement/Make-Up Date = Tuesday

Semifinals: - Seeding criteria remains the same (East #1 vs. West #2 &amp; West #1 vs. East #2) - Higher seeds host - Play on Wednesday (Boys SCW 18 &amp; Girls SCW 47) - Postponement/Make-Up Date = Thursday

Consolation and Championship Finals: - All classes played at one location - Play on Saturday (Boys SCW 18 &amp; Girls SCW 47)

Wrestling
 will also see changes for this school year. Following the previously 
release change to 4A and 3-1A boys and girls wrestling in Salina, 6A and
 5A will follow the same three day format at Hartman Arena. With the 
approved alterations the State Wrestling Championships will take place 
February 22, 23 and 24, 2024. The Executive Board also approved the 
Optimal Performance Calculator (OPC) for use starting this school year. 
Full details on the state schedule and the OPC use will be sent to 
school leaders at a later date.

Another approved change coming this school year deals with regional dates for baseball
 at the 3A and 2-1A level. In an effort to help with pitcher 
availability, the regional seeding date has been moved up to the 
Saturday of&nbsp; SCW 44 to allow for the first round games of regionals to 
be played on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday of SCW 45. The second round 
(semifinals and finals) will take place Monday or Wednesday of&nbsp; SCW 46.

Basketball and volleyball postseason formats were discussed and tabled for further discussion.

Based
 upon the inclusion of non-public school student eligibility in the 
state budget bill, multiple rule modifications are necessary to adhere 
to House Sub for SB 113 from this year’s legislative session. The new 
policy language will be distributed to school leaders and posted on the 
KSHSAA website later this summer.

 Executive Board meeting will be distributed with the minutes in July.

Key Items Approved by KSHSAA Executive Board

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Gavin Williams held Kansas City to one hit through seven innings in his second major league start, Will Brennan hit a two-run double in the ninth inning, and the Cleveland Guardians rallied past the Royals 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Kansas City had broken a scoreless tie in the eighth on a comebacker by Nicky Lopez against Trevor Stephan (4-3), who threw wildly to the plate while trying to cut down pinch-runner Dairon Blanco.

Emmanuel Clase worked around another error in the ninth to complete the two-hitter and earn his 24th save.

Guardians manager Terry Francona missed the game, with bench coach DeMarlo Hale filling in. Francona, who missed significant time in 2020 and 2021 with medical issues, felt ill earlier Tuesday and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/guardians-terry-francona-a34f74b9ac3888c771e2cc617944af0e">was hospitalized overnight for observation.</a>

“I found out right before the game,” Hale said. “He said, ‘Get in here, I’m not feeling too well.’ It was so close (to game time), I didn’t get to ask him what’s going on.”

Williams, Cleveland’s top pitching prospect, was superb after his slightly shaky debut last week, when he gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings against Oakland.

“Definitely more comfortable this time,” Williams agreed.

He struck out six, walked one and needed only 92 pitches to get through seven innings. He faced his only real trouble in the third and retired Bobby Witt Jr. on a lineout with two runners on.

“Today he was a little more relaxed,” catcher Bo Naylor said. “He settled in very easily and just pitched with his stuff.”

Williams became the second pitcher in franchise history with a one-hit outing of seven innings or more during his first two appearances.

“He was commanding the fastball so well,” Naylor said. “The sky’s the limit for him when he’s doing that. He really showed us what he’s made of.”

Josh Naylor led off the ninth with a single against Royals closer Scott Barlow (2-4), Andrés Giménez drew a one-out walk and Brennan grounded his third hit of the game into the right-field corner to score them both.

“Honestly, I don’t think you could have written it up any better,” Brennan said. “I got put in the right situation and got a pitch to hit. As a competitor that’s the best thing you can ask for.”

The Kansas City-area native is batting .373 (31 for 83) over his last 23 games.

“Give them credit,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “They put the ball in play and that’s what they do, they make something happen.”

Barlow blew his second save of the season.

Royals starter Brady Singer gave up four singles over six innings. He allowed just two runners past first base.

“I thought he was tremendous,” Quatraro said. “He started working both sides of the plate. He was really efficient.”

The Guardians have played in a major league-most 34 one-run games, going 16-18.

Kansas City was shut out for the 10th time and fell to 22-57, its worst record in franchise history at this point in the season.

Royals C Salvador Perez was out of the lineup after having an eye procedure Monday.

Kansas City reinstated OF Kyle Isbel (left hamstring strain) from the 10-day injured list and optioned OF Nate Eaton to Triple-A Omaha.

LHP Logan Allen (3-2, 3.68 ERA) starts for Cleveland as the series continues on Wednesday. Kansas City had not announced a starter.

(AP) — Prosecutors have dropped a misdemeanor assault charge filed last October against Las Vegas Raiders' wide receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/davante-adams">Davante Adams</a>&nbsp;after he&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-las-vegas-raiders-nfl-sports-davante-adams-9db797d4dd4fab59f16cea83324f918e">shoved a photographer to the ground</a>&nbsp;as he left the field following a loss at Kansas City.

The case filed in Kansas City municipal court was dismissed June 5, the Kansas City Star&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/crime/article2767">reported</a>.

Adams' attorney, J.R. Hobbs, declined to comment.

Police in Kansas City, Missouri, have said Adams pushed Ryan Zebley to the ground while running off the field after the Raiders lost 30-29 to the Chiefs on Oct. 10. Police at the time called it an “intentional, overt act” that caused whiplash, a headache and a possible minor concussion.

Adams apologized in his postgame comments to the media and&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/tae15adams/status/1579687398686228480?s=20&amp;t=jZwbBGXeaBWRP2YcD4TL5A">later on Twitter</a>.

“He jumped in front of me coming off the field. I kind of pushed him. He ended up on the ground,” Adams said after the game. “I want to apologize to him for that. That was just frustration mixed with him really just running in front of me."

Zebley was carrying video equipment for a local production company contracted with ESPN to cover the game. He sued Adams, the Raiders and the Chiefs in May, saying he was targeted online and feared for his safety in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

The lawsuit filed in Jackson County Circuit Court is ongoing, the Kansas City Star&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article275795346.html">reported</a>.

a third-straight game, the Hays Larks couldn’t overcome five errors and lost
14-10 to the Colorado Rough Riders Sunday afternoon at Everitt Middle School.

The Larks (13-4, 6-2 RMBL) scored five runs in the first two
innings but found themselves trailing 11-5 after three. The Larks scored three
in the sixth, one in the seventh and a run in the ninth but the Rough Riders
scored single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth to hold on for the victory.

The Larks scored on passed ball and a John Ceccoli two-out
single to grab a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. The Roughriders used a walk,
a single and back-to-back doubles to score three in the bottom of the first.

The Larks used back-to-back walks and back-to-back hit batters
to tie the game in the second. A sacrifice fly from Damian Ruiz gave the Larks
the lead. Garrett Gruell followed with a run-scoring single to push the lead to
5-3.

Colorado scored five in the bottom of the second then three
in the third to build an 11-5 lead.

The Larks plated three in the top of the sixth to pull within
11-8. A double-steal with Bryson Evans and first and Luis Garcia at third
scored the first run of the inning. Gruell and Ceccoli followed with RBI
singles.

The Larks opened the ninth with back-to-back singles but a caught
stealing and strikeout hampered the comeback. Trent Baker drove in a run with a
double but Weston Valasek grounded out to third to end the game.

Baker, Gruell and Ceccoli all had three hits with Gruell and

Starter Carson Jacobs (1-2) allowed eight runs (five earned)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Jose Siri homered, Wander Franco had a sacrifice fly in a two-run seventh, and the MLB-leading Tampa Bay Rays beat Kansas City 3-1 Sunday for a split of a four-game series against the lowly Royals.

The Rays are 6-7 over their last 13 games, including a four-game split with Oakland, which has the worst record in the majors.

Still, Tampa Bay reached the halfway point of the season at 54-27, with a 4 1/2 game lead over Baltimore in the AL East.

“It's awesome,” Rays starter Tyler Glasnow said. “It's great. We've been playing really well all season and we've maintained it throughout the season as well.”

Kansas City dropped to 22-56 and is winless in 11 consecutive series, the third-longest stretch during the same season in franchise history.

“Tough game,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “We were in it right to the end.

The game was delayed approximately 15 minutes in the fifth inning when plate umpire and crew chief Mark Wegner took a hard foul tip by Tampa Bay’s Randy Arozarena off the mask. After being checked out behind the plate, Wegner walked off the field with a Rays’ trainer.

Siri opened the seventh inning by drawing a walk from Taylor Clarke (1-2). Yandy Díaz got his fourth hit of the game on an infield single that deflected off the Royals reliever to shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., who was charged with an error for an errant throw to first that put runners on second and third.

Siri scored on Clarke's wild pitch before Franco's sacrifice fly made it 3-1.

Franco had a homer and two RBIs on Saturday, his first game after being benched two days for how he is handled frustrating situations this season.

Siri opened the scoring with a solo homer in the third-inning, He has hit 12 of his 14 homers since May 7..

After Colin Poche (5-2) worked a scoreless eighth, and Pete Fairbanks got three outs in the ninth to earn his eighth save.

Both staters pitched well, but didn't figure in the decision.

Kansas City's Daniel Lynch gave up one run and six hits over six innings. The lefty was coming off a start Tuesday at Detroit in which he allowed one hit in seven scoreless innings.

“Daniel threw the ball well,” Quatraro said. “They made him work. Made really tough pitches, got soft contact.”

Glasnow, making his sixth start after beginning the season on the injured list with an oblique injury, gave up one run, four hits and struck out a season-high 12 in five innings. The 6-foot-8 right-hander struck out the side in the first, third and fifth innings.

“Gasoline,” Siri said through a translator about Glasnow's stuff.

Kansas City tied it at 1 in the fourth when Witt singled, swiped second for the Royals' third stolen base in the game and scored on Maikel Garcia's base hit.

Royals: LHP Ryan Yarbrough (facial fractures), hit by a 106.2 mph liner off the bat of Oakland's Ryan Noda on May 7, went four scoreless innings for Triple-A Omaha on Saturday in his second minor league start.

Rays: Ace Shane McClanahan (mid-back tightness) threw four minutes in the outfield and seven pitches off the mound and said it went good. His next start has been pushed back from Wednesday to Friday after leaving last Thursday's start in the fourth inning.

Royals: RHP Brady Singer (4-7) and Cleveland RHP Gavin Williams (0-1) are Tuesday night's starters.

Rays:: RHP Taj Bradley (5-3) will face Arizona on Tuesday night.

CITY – The HBC Hammer 15U went 1-2 at the Jim Clanton Memorial Baseball
Tournament in Garden City over the weekend.

Friday,
the Hammer lost 7-5 to the Liberal Rattlers 16U then Saturday fell 8-1 to Finney
County. Sunday they defeated the Dodge City A’s 20-3 in three innings.

Friday’s
game with Liberal was tied 5-5 after three. The Rattlers scored two in the bottom
of the fourth and held on the rest of the way in the six inning game. Jesse
Taggart drove in two runs.

Finney
County scored four runs in the top of the first in Saturday’s game. The Hammer
outhit their opponent 6-5 but were hampered by four errors which led to four
unearned runs. Wes Dreiling had two hits and drove in the only run.

In
Sunday’s finale with Dodge City, the Hammer scored all 20 of their runs in the second
inning. They took advantage of four walks, five hit batters and five errors in
the frame. Bennett Smith and Pierce Schoenberger both had two hits. Jaxson
Chartier drove in three runs. Wes Dreiling struck out six over three innings and
picked up the win.

The
15U Hammer are now 4-6 on the season. All three Hammer high school teams will
play in the Salina Grand Slam Tournament this weekend.

COLORADO SPRINGS -Trent Baker and Weston Valasek both had six hits and combined to drive in seven runs and the Hays Larks defeated the Colorado Springs CageRats 21-6 Saturday night at Spurgeon Field. The Larks (13-2, 6-1 RMBL) scored nine runs in the top of the eighth inning to blow the game open and end it by run-rule..

Trent Baker had the big hit in the decisive frame with a three-run homer. Garrett Gruell drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. John Ceccoli added a two-run double, Luis Garcia had a two-run single and Brady Evans a one-run double.

The Larks took a 2-1 lead in the second on back-to-back singles from Trent Baker and Weston Valasek. After the CageRats scored a run to tie the game in the third, the Larks answered with two in the fourth on an error and bases-loaded walk to Gruell.

The Larks tacked on four more runs in the fifth to push the lead to 8-2. Baker drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly, Damian Ruiz added a two-run triple and Gruell and RBI double.

Trent Baker homered in the seventh and finished 6-for-6 with two home&nbsp; runs and six RBIs along with three runs scored. Weston Valasek also had six hits and scored three runs. Garrett Gruell drove in three runs. John Ceccoli and Luis Garcia both had two RBIs.

Starter Kam Walton&nbsp; (2-0) went five innings and picked up the win allowing two earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

The Larks 21 runs scored are the most since they scored 24 vs. the Colorado Tribe on July 17, 2022. Their 24 hits are the most since having 21 in that same game vs. the Tribe a year ago.

SALINA - A couple of future Fort Hays State women's basketball players teamed up to help the Blue team beat the Gold team 68-61 at the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Game Saturday at Kansas Wesleyan's Mabee Arena.

Goodland's Telexa Weeter, who was named Miss Kansas Basketball after helping the Cowgirls to an undefeated season and second straight Class 3A state title, led all scoring with 14 points.

Avery Lowe, who is a graduate of Maize South, added 10 points.

Bishop Carroll's Landon Forbes, another FHSU signee, scored six points for the Gold before fouling out.

TMP-Marian grad and Barton Community College signee Jaci VonLintel played but didn't score for the Blue team. Quinter's Anna Briggs scored four points for the Gold team.

Assistant Josh Eilert has been selected as the interim coach at West Virginia, punctuating a hectic week after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/huggins-arrested-dui-pittsburgh-west-virginia-fb441762888b47bade5efb1b4e247da0">Bob Huggins resigned following a drunken driving arrest</a>.

Eilert, who ia a native of Osborne and has no previous head coaching experience, emerged as athletic director Wren Baker’s choice to shepherd the team through a challenging offseason stretch. Baker stayed in-house and chose not to hire a full-time coach given the limited options of conducting a nationwide search in June and the urgency of finding someone — anyone — with the start of practice only four months away.

“I spoke with knowledgeable basketball people around the country over the last week, including coaches, professional basketball executives and others of whom I trust to identify a strong group of candidates to speak with,” Baker said in a statement announcing the move Saturday night. “Ultimately what I came to recognize, was that conducting this search in late June was difficult for many of our candidates and also it put our talented student-athletes at a real disadvantage. With that said, we will conduct our national search at the conclusion of the 2023-24 season.”

Under NCAA rules, West Virginia’s players have a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal, and several apparently have chosen to do so, although they have the option to return. Eilert could be the glue that keeps together an upper class-heavy roster built largely through transfers.

“Josh Eilert is the right person to lead our men’s basketball program next season,” Baker said. “He has been an important part of our success, and he has displayed great integrity, work ethic and dedication. He has been involved in all facets of our program during his time on the basketball staff, and he has earned this opportunity to coach our team on an interim basis for the 2023-24 season.”

The 43-year-old Eilert first joined Huggins as a graduate assistant at Kansas State in 2006, then followed him to West Virginia in 2007. Eilert has had a variety of roles with the Mountaineers, including video coordinator and director of basketball operations, before being named an assistant coach in July 2022.

“I would like to thank Wren Baker, President Gee, Rob Alsop, Steve Uryasz and the rest of our administration for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to lead our storied Mountaineer basketball program,” Eilert said. “I would also like to thank Coach Huggins for retaining me on his staff at K-State in 2006 and for bringing me to West Virginia in 2007. I’ve learned so much from Coach Huggins, and it was an honor to work for a Hall of Fame coach for the last 17 years."

Among others who were linked to the opening were UAB coach and former Huggins assistant Andy Kennedy, and former West Virginia and Michigan coach John Beilein.

Eilert is an Osborne native and played two seasons at Cloud County Community College (200-02) before transferring to Kansas State where he played for two seasons (2002-04).&nbsp; He was a graduate assistant with the Wildcats two seasons (2005-07) before moving to Morgantown were he started out as video coordinator (2007-13) then became the coordinator/director of basketball operations (2013-22). He was an interim assistant coach during the 2016-17 season and assistant athletics director for basketball operations in 2022 before becoming an assistant coach this past season.

Eilert graduated from Kansas State with a B.S. in marketing in 2024 and an M.S. in college student personnel/intercollegiate athletics in 2007. He and his wife Brandi have three children, Brendan, Emri and Tristan.

Huggins had assembled arguably one of the better recruiting classes in the country from the portal for next season, including Syracuse center Jesse Edwards, Arizona guard Kerr Kriisa, Manhattan guards Jose Perez and Omar Silverio, and Montana State guard RaeQuan Battle.

Huggins’ 16-year run as West Virginia’s coach ended with his resignation on June 17. The day before, he was charged with driving under the influence in Pittsburgh. According to a criminal complaint, Huggins initially believed he was in Columbus, Ohio. A breath test determined Huggins’ blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Aug. 3 in Pittsburgh.

Huggins also pleaded no contest in 2004 to driving under the influence when he was the coach at Cincinnati. He was fired a year later amid a power struggle with the school’s president as well as the aftermath of the DUI arrest.

His resignation at West Virginia came a month after the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/huggins-homophobic-slur-west-virginia-xavier-77ce70b41112a0062421ad9405558473">university suspended him for three games</a>&nbsp;for using an anti-gay slur while also denigrating Catholics during a radio interview.

The 69-year-old Huggins was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame last September.
