🤼‍♂️ Six Tiger champions, 20 place at FHSU Bob Smith Open

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Women's Wrestling had a strong showing at its home tournament on Sunday (Dec. 1) in the second annual FHSU Bob Smith Women's Open. Isabella Cross (110), Lindsey Lopez (117), Lexie Lopez (124), Jamie Laswell (131), Nichole Moore (138), and Hailey Conley (207) of Fort Hays State all won their respective classes, while 20 Tigers placed overall.

The Tigers had 10 finalists in the tournament spread over eight of the 10 classes. FHSU had teammates face off in the finals at 131 (Laswell and Amanda Jaeger) and 207 (Conley and Grace Johns). The Tigers had 19 of their 20 placers reach the championship semifinals.

At 110, Cross recorded four-straight tech falls to win her class. Three of those were by shutout scores of 10-0, including the semifinal and final. She yielded only two points on the day in her quarterfinal match that had a 12-2 result. She defeated Rylee Balcazar of Chadron State in the final.

Lindsey Lopez recorded a tech fall, a fall, and a pair of decisions to win at 117. The tech fall and one of her decisions were shutouts, but her championship match was a thriller as she scored two points in the waning seconds to flip a 4-3 deficit into a 5-4 win over Jaia Ashley of Schreiner University.

At 124, No. 10 ranked Lexie Lopez posted a 4-0 day with three-straight tech falls and then a fall in the championship match. Two of her tech falls were 10-0 shutouts, while the other was a 13-2 spread. She pinned Kira Bufford of Schreiner in the final in 1:37.

Jamie Laswell did not yield a point all day in her 4-0 performance to win at 131. She posted a 27-second fall in her first match, then scored 10-0 tech falls in her final three matches of the day. Her championship match was against teammate Amanda Jaeger, who had a similar result path on her way to the final with a fall and a pair of shutout tech falls before meeting Laswell in the final.

At 138, Nichole Moore had three-straight shutout wins en route to the final. Her first two were tech falls by scores of 12-0 and 11-0 and then she had an 8-0 decision in the semifinal. Moore avenged a loss to Corrie Williams of Adams State from the dual the night before in the final. Moore won the championship on criteria in a 2-2 tie.

At 207, Hailey Conley went 3-0 to claim the title of her class. She recorded a pair of falls to reach the final and then took a 7-1 decision in the final over teammate Grace Johns, who also had a pair of falls to reach the final before running into Conley.

Arianna Ortiz (103) and Isabella Renfro (180) also notched second-place finishes for the Tigers. Ortiz had a tech fall and fall to reach the final, where she lost by fall to Odelia Lopez of Schreiner. Renfro blitzed through her first three opponents of the day with a pair of fast falls and a shutout tech fall before losing by fall to Nina Sandoval of Minot State.

Aside from the 10 top-two placing Tigers, FHSU had four third-place finishers, three fourth-place finishers, two fifth finishers, and one sixth-place finisher. Third-place finishers included Hannah Selle (103), Sophia Shultz (110), Isabell Ortiz (117), and Ashlynn Goodwin (138). Fourth-place finishers included Dylen Ritchey (138), Alexis Burton (145), and Josie Houk (160). Addison Broxterman (131) and Kaylee Ricketts (160) took fifth, while Josiah Ortiz (117) took sixth.
