The Hays High Indians are set to make their first-ever appearance in the KSHSAA Football State Championship game. They will face St. Thomas Aquinas at 7 p.m. on Saturday for the 5A crown.
Hays (8-4) has been on the road for every postseason game. This weekend's trip to Emporia marks their fifth consecutive road game. As the nine seed in 5A West, Hays has traveled to Andover, Great Bend, Hutchinson and Goddard to play Eisenhower. The Indians were the lower seed in all five contests.
Hays has been on the road for eight of their last 10 games.
St. Thomas Aquinas (12-0) is the No. 1 seed out of 5A East. The Saints have won their last three games by margins of 14, 1 and 7 points. They won the 4A state championship a season ago.
Victoria native Randy Dreiling coaches Aquinas. He has won nine state championships, two with his current school and seven at Hutchinson. The nine titles are tied with Ed Kriwiel for most in Kansas history.
Saturday will mark the first-ever meeting between Hays and St. Thomas Aquinas. The Hertz pregame show begins at 6 p.m. with kickoff shortly after at 7 p.m. from Welch Stadium on the campus of Emporia State University.
