On the other side, Masaya Nitta of Ouachita Baptist put in a commendable effort, despite the challenging circumstances. He recorded 12 saves on the night before yielding to Dillon Staal for the final 19 minutes of the game. Fort Hays State displayed exceptional offensive prowess, tallying 35 shots with 20 on target, while Ouachita Baptist managed just 7 shots with 3 on target.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Wide receiver Mecole Hardman, who was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jets-chiefs-mecole-hardman-b22fa23cdf88852183aa58d3e0c4b1ff">traded from the New York Jets</a>&nbsp;back to the Kansas City Chiefs this week, said Thursday that he spent part of last season in the hospital after an abdominal injury caused him to lose feeling in his legs.

The injury occurred during a game against Tennessee in early November, Hardman said. He finished the game, and it was the following day that he began feeling cramps in his abdomen. The pain was getting worse by the hour, and after Hardman phoned Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder, he was taken to the emergency room and admitted to the hospital.

He lost feeling in his legs for “four or five days,” Hardman said, and was hospitalized two more days after getting it back, before he was finally discharged. Hardman missed the final nine games of the regular season and the Chiefs' postseason win over Jacksonville, then hurt his groin in the AFC title game against Cincinnati, forcing him to miss their Super Bowl win over Philadelphia.

“It was scary as hell, not being able to move my legs,” Hardman said in his first comments since returning to Kansas City. “It makes you think, ‘Is this it?’ The feeling came back — the doctor said it would come back, and that gave me hope. But the 10 days I was there, I slept maybe 8 hours or so, 10 hours max, because I was in so much pain.”

Doctors went back and forth on a diagnosis before settling on osteitis pubis, an inflammation of the joint between the left and right pubic bones that causes swelling and pain that extends from the groin to the lower abdomen.

The injury caused Hardman to miss the majority of his contract year, when his rookie deal was ending and he was hoping to land a big pay day. He had some interest in free agency from the Browns and several other teams, but he ultimately decided to sign a $4 million prove-it deal with the Jets in part because of the potential to play with Aaron Rodgers.

When the quarterback tore his Achilles tendon in the Jets' opener, Hardman said that threw their offense into disarray. He barely played the first five games, catching a single pass, and it soon became clear that New York was ready to move on from him.

“I got with my agents and they said there's some talk they could possibly trade you,” Hardman said. “After that, that's when we just started waiting for the inevitable, seeing what would happen. They kept it low-key the teams that were interested — in the mix. When I heard it was Kansas City, I was excited to get back here.”

The Chiefs waived wide receiver Montrell Washington and defensive tackle Keondre Coburn to clear the way for Hardman and defensive end Charles Omenihu, who is expected to be added to the roster after finishing his six-game NFL suspension.

Chiefs coordinators Matt Nagy and Steve Spagnuolo said they hope to get Washington and Coburn on the practice squad.

In the meantime, Hardman is trying to get up to speed in time to play Sunday against the Chargers. He said the playbook has changed little since he was part of the offense, though some of the terminology is different. And while the Chiefs hope he can provide some punch at wide receiver, special teams coordinator Dave Toub also plans to use him as a returner.

“He looks good,” Toub said. “We saw him at the Jets game when we played there. It's good to see him back in the building. If he's up (on the gameday roster), he's going to be a guy that will play on some special teams for sure. But obviously he just got here. He has to get established again, and Andy (Reid) will make that decision pretty soon.”

Chiefs punter Tommy Townsend has been dealing with hamstring soreness this season that has landed him on the injury report but has yet to keep him out of a game. That led someone to ask Toub who his backup would be if Townsend went down during a game, and the anticipated answer — big-legged kicker Harrison Butker — turned out to be far off base.

“Believe it or not, 15 is our backup punter,” Toub said, referring, of course, to quarterback Patrick Mahomes. “He wants to do it. He shows me all the time. He's out here on Saturdays booming punts. He wants to do it.”

Incidentally, the backup to Butker is not Townsend but Chiefs safety Justin Reid. He made a PAT in emergency duty last year.

Some bragging rights will be on the line Friday night when the kids of Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and defensive backs coach Dave Merritt meet in a high school football game in suburban Kansas City. Nagy's son, Tate, plays quarterback for Blue Valley West while Merritt's son, Dawson, is a linebacker for rival Blue Valley.

“They went to Iowa State together on a (recruiting) visit earlier this year," Merritt said. "Last year they were sophomores; they didn't know each other. Now they're both in their junior year. So we're calling it the Nagy-Merritt Bowl.”

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Jets are trading seldom-used wide receiver Mecole Hardman back to the Kansas City Chiefs, where he was part of two Super Bowl-winning teams, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The Jets also are sending a seventh-round pick in the 2025 draft to the Chiefs and getting a sixth-rounder that year in return, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the teams had not announced the trade, which was first reported by ESPN.

The Chiefs selected the 25-year-old Hardman in the second round of the 2019 draft, and he made the Pro Bowl as a rookie as a return specialist. Hardman gradually became a bigger part of the Kansas City offense, taking advantage of prolific passer Patrick Mahomes, and wound up making 151 catches for 2,088 yards and 16 touchdowns over four seasons with the Chiefs.

He became a free agent last offseason and signed a $4 million contract with the Jets, who hoped that he could incorporate his speed and versatility into their offense. The deal included a $2.5 million signing bonus and $3.6 million in guarantees.

Hardman had a quiet training camp, and undrafted rookie Xavier Gipson eventually surpassed him on the depth chart as a returner and wide receiver. Gipson had the winning punt return in overtime in New York’s season-opening win over Buffalo and has become more involved in the offense, including running the ball out of the backfield on reverses and end-arounds.

Meanwhile, Hardman played only 28 snaps on offense — with one 6-yard catch — and two snaps on special teams. He was a healthy inactive in Week 5 at Denver when the Jets instead elevated wide receiver Irvin Charles from the practice squad because of his special teams skills.

Hardman acknowledged last week that his lack of playing time has been “hard sometimes mentally,” but said he was focused on contributing however he could.

“As of now, I guess there’s just maybe better options,” he said. “Or they just haven’t called my number yet.”

Trade speculation centering around Hardman began circulating during the past few weeks.

“I just want to play,” Hardman said. “Whether it’s here or somewhere else, I don’t make that call.”

When asked if he’d welcome a trade, Hardman said: “It depends. If it works out for both sides, I guess, I don’t know. I’ve never been part of this, so I don’t know.”

Kansas City became a natural fit given his background with the Chiefs and their own problems at wide receiver.

They allowed Hardman and veteran JuJu Smith-Schuster to sign elsewhere in free agency, and they were confident that a young and untested group of wide receivers would be able to step up. But while rookie Rashee Rice has started to make more plays, the Chiefs have still gotten little from second-year pro Skyy Moore or oft-injured Kadarius Toney.

Wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who is making more than the rest of their receivers combined, has failed to make an impact, and the Chiefs lost Justin Watson for the short term after he bruised an elbow last week against Denver.

Watson did not practice Wednesday and is unlikely to play Sunday against the Chargers.

The Chiefs have won five straight heading into their AFC West matchup with Los Angeles, while the Jets handed the Eagles their first loss last week and are carrying back-to-back wins into their off week.

🏈 Jets trading Mecole Hardman back to the Chiefs for draft picks

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team will wrap up its fall practice season with the 2023 Tiger Fall World Series October 24-26 at Larks Park. All three games in the inter-squad series are free to attend and open to the public. First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. each evening.

The Tigers have been split up into two teams, one coached by assistant coach Cory BOnner and Luis Ayala&nbsp;and one led by graduate assistant Soren Graversen and Elliott Herrmann.

All three games will be played regardless of outcome.

2023 Tiger Fall World Series Game 1 - Tuesday, October 24 - 6:05 p.m. Game 2 - Wednesday, October 25 - 6:05 p.m. Game 3 - Thursday, October 26 - 6:05 p.m.

The Hays High girls golf team shaved 10 strokes off their day
one total and finished in second place at the 5A State Golf Tournament Tuesday at
Carey Park in Hutchinson. After a 345 team score on Monday, Hays shot 335
Tuesday for a two-day total of 680. Kapaun Mt. Carmel won the team title by 31
shots. The Crusaders bettered Monday’s 327 by shooting 322 in the final round.
Bishop Carroll finished third with a 700.

Evyn Cox led the Indians with an eighth-place finish. Cox had
rounds of 83 and 82 for a two day total of 165. Abbie Norris had two rounds of
85 and tied for 11th at 170. After shooting an 89 on Monday, Jaycee Oakley
finished with an 83 on Tuesday and finished 13th at 172. Lily Garrison had
rounds of 88 and 85 and placed 15th with a 173. All four picked up all-state honors.

Kapaun’s Zimena Sarinana and Andover’s Regan Dusenbury both
shot rounds of 70 on Monday and 74 on Tuesday and finished atop the leaderboard
with a 144 total.

TMP-Marian’s Ashley Hipp closed with a 96 and finished 15th
at the 3-2-1A tourney at the Hesston Golf Course. Hipp shot an 88 in her first
round on Monday for a 184 total.

Margaret Ulruch of Collegiate, who shot a 73 Monday, won the
3-2-1A individual title after firing an 81 Tuesday for a 154 total. Colby’s
Anna Starbuck tied for second six strokes backs after rounds of 82 and 78.
Logan Nolan of Colby placed eighth with a 176.

Silver Lake won the team title with a 701, 21 shots better
than Colby who had a 723 total.

Topeka Hayden won the 4A team title by 37 shots over Wamego.
Hayden shot a 661 and Wamego 698. Wamego’s Addison Douglass won the individual title
after rounds of 73. Pratt’s Avery Blasi finished second six shots back.

Olathe Northwest won 6A by 24 shots over Manhattan. Kinslea
Jones of Maize had rounds of 71 and 66 and won the individual title by three
strokes over Blue Valley’s Hadley Neese who had rounds of 72 and 68.

⛳ HHS girls finish second at 5A state, TMP's Hipp top-20

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Volleyball dropped their mid-week MIAA match with Emporia State on Tuesday at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Hornets took the first two sets before the Tigers won the third by two. However, a comeback was not in order as the Hornets put the match away in the fourth set. ESU won by scores of 26-24, 25-20, 23-25, and 25-12.

The Tigers had three set points to work with in the first set, only to see the Hornets rally for five straight points and steal the opening set. A pair of kills, an attack error by FHSU, and then a pair of service aces put the Hornets over the top to win by two.

The Tigers held a five-point lead in the second set only to see the Hornets rally back to a tie at 17-17. Eventually the Hornets snuck past again with a five-point run to take a four-point lead at 22-18. ESU went on to take the set 25-20.

After another five-point lead by the Tigers early in the third set, the Hornets rallied back to even the score at 9-9. From that point, the set was tight, but the Tigers won three of the final four points in the set to take their first set of the night 25-23. Any Tiger comeback hopes were put to bed in the fourth set though when the Hornets went on a seven-point run to extend their lead to 19-8. They closed out the match with a 25-12 set win to knock of the Tigers 3-1.

Gracie Rains&nbsp;led the Tigers with 13 kills, followed by 11 from Riley Tinder, Caiya Stucky&nbsp;recorded 36 assists. Tinder finished with a double-double, adding a team-high 18 digs, while Kirsten Evans&nbsp;added 14 digs.

Sandora Sasaki was the workhorse for the Hornets, putting down 32 kills, but also had 14 errors attacking the ball 70 times. Brailee Bogle handed out 45 assists, while five Hornets reached double figures in digs led by Tasiah Nunnery with 16.

Now 8-13 overall, 2-10 in the MIAA, Fort Hays State hits the road this weekend for conference matches at Pittsburg State (Friday) and Central Oklahoma (Saturday). Emporia State moved to 10-9 overall and 4-7 in the MIAA with the win.

🏐 Tigers fall at home to Hornets in four

HAYS - The Hays Hays boys soccer team closed out their home schedule with a 10-0 win over TMP-Marian Tuesday night at Hays High School.

The Indians led 4-0 at the half and finished 4-2-1 at home.

The Indians have won three of their last four and take an 8-6-1 record into their regular season finale at the Wichita Classical School on Thursday.

⚽ HHS blanks TMP to close out home slate

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Fort Hays State Women's Golf competed at the Midwest Intercollegiate Tournament held on October 16-17 at the challenging Mules National Golf Club. The 5682-yard, par-70 layout posed a challenge for the competition, resulting in an average stroke count of 82.49 throughout the tournament.

The Tigers opened with a score of 338 in the first round, followed by a 336 on day two. The team concluded the 20-team tournament with a total stroke count of 674, securing 17th overall. Notably, the team managed to register four birdies and 63 pars over the two-day tournament.

Leading the charge for Fort Hays State were Morgan Brasser and Corbyn Marquess, both securing the 33rd spot in the 112-player field. Brasser played posted rounds of 82 and 76, while Marquess&nbsp;posted scores of 78 and 80. Brasser had 22 pars and a birdie to her credit, while Marquess had 17 pars and a pair of birdies.

Hayden York&nbsp;secured the 89th spot with 12 pars and a birdie finishing with rounds of 85 and 89. Shauna Lee&nbsp;finished 102nd overall with rounds of 93 and 91. Ella Neuhauser&nbsp;concluded her performance at 104th place with rounds of 100 and 93.

Central Missouri emerged as the victors in the team competition on their home course, finishing 22 strokes over par. Second place was secured by Minnesota State, who recorded a total of 41 strokes over par as a team. Hayley Jones of Central Missouri clinched the individual title, finishing just 1-over par for the tournament.

The Fort Hays State Women's Golf Team will be back in action next week, competing in the last tournament of the fall season, the Tulsa Cup.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The tournament was hosted by Southern Nazarene University at the Kickingbird Golf Club. The course was a par-70 that totaled 6,944 yards.

As a team Fort Hays State shot round scores of 296, 296, and 297. The team recorded 18 birdies in the opening round, each player contributing at least two.

The Tigers were led by Tanner Copeland&nbsp;and Cooper Scheck&nbsp;who both tied for 42nd&nbsp;place after shooting 8-over par. Both Copeland and Scheck also shot 3-over par in their final round. Copeland came out of the first 18 holes with a 71, while Scheck had his best round in round two with a 72. The two players combined for 22 birdies on the tournament.

Cole Streck&nbsp;finished in a tie for 68th&nbsp;place for the Tigers. His best round score was in the second round where Streck shot a 71. In that round Streck had four birdies, three of which were on the back nine. Jackson Rader finished in a tie for 91st&nbsp;place with round scores of 77, 80, and 73. Rader did record an eagle in the third round on a 586-yard par 5 hole. Parker Krob&nbsp;finished in 103rd&nbsp;place after shooting a 239.

Sam Tandy of Harding University won the individual title with an 11-under par score. Tandy shot in the 60's in all three rounds of competition. Arkansas Tech University took home the team title, climbing two spots on the leaderboard on the final day of play. Tech shot a 277 in round two and finished the tournament with the best par-3 scoring average with a 2.95.

The Tiger golf team will compete again next Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 23-24) for the Tulsa Cup hosted by Rogers State.&nbsp;&nbsp;

⛳ Tiger men 16th at at Super Regional Preview

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas State coach Chris Klieman plans to use both veteran Will Howard and Avery Johnson at quarterback going forward after the freshman standout came on against Texas Tech last weekend and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/avery-johnson-xavier-watts-college-football-9e3f435cc037caae33f6c19b0a996a30">matched a school record</a>&nbsp;with five touchdown runs.

The Wildcats were struggling to move the ball&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-state-texas-tech-college-football-f65bd758f60040e9c28ffd20d115bbaa">against the Red Raiders</a>&nbsp;with Howard, who replaced the injured Adrian Martinez last season and led them to the Big 12 championship. But when Johnson entered the game, the dual-threat quarterback energized Kansas State, which wound up overcoming a third-quarter deficit for a 38-21 victory.

“What we learned from this past Saturday is that we've seen Will play at a really high level and be successful, and then we saw Avery play at a high level and be successful,” Klieman said Tuesday. “So we feel comfortable with both guys.”

Howard, who has started the first six games for the Wildcats (4-2, 2-1 Big 12), has struggled at times this season. He has thrown for 1,310 yards with nine touchdown passes and seven interceptions. That includes three picks two weeks ago at Oklahoma State, when the senior quarterback was just 15 of 34 for 152 yards and a touchdown in the 29-21 loss.

That defeat, coupled with a loss to Missouri in which Howard also struggled, left the Wildcats in a tough position in the Big 12 race. They face TCU on Saturday night in a rematch of last year's conference title game, then play conference newcomer Houston before a showdown with third-ranked Texas that could help decide who plays in this year's championship game.

Kansas State listed both Howard and Johnson as the starter for the Horned Frogs (4-3, 2-2), but Klieman said there will be no decision on the amount of playing time each will receive until the game plan is finalized later in the week.

“If you thought it would be a 60-40, 50-50 or a 90-10 split, we have no idea,” Klieman said. “We're going to go through the game plan and see who, where and what gives us the best opportunity.”

Johnson is known for his blazing speed — some say he's the fastest on the roster — and that showed last Saturday, when he carried 13 times for 90 yards and those five scores. But he also was 8 of 9 for 77 yards through the air against the Red Raiders, and he is 11 of 13 for 132 yards when figuring some playing time against Southeast Missouri State and Missouri.

“We saw the speed instantly, out there running in the summer. ‘This kid can roll.’ And we got into fall camp and it was like, ‘OK, he can throw too,'" Kansas State wide receiver Jadon Jackson said. “He's something special.”

Johnson got a jump on his college career last fall, when he helped lead Maize High School to a second straight Kansas state title before graduating early. That allowed him to enroll at Kansas State at the semester and take place in spring ball.

“First two months he was a little quiet and things like that,” Wildcats running back Treshaun Ward said. “As he got comfortable for us, he started talking more. He's on the right track to be a leader, and he'll be an incredible leader, too.”

But when Johnson entered the game, the dual-threat quarterback energized Kansas State, which wound up overcoming a third-quarter deficit for a 38-21 victory.“What we learned from this past Saturday is that we've seen Will play at a really high level and be successful, and then we saw Avery play at a high level and be successful,” Klieman said Tuesday. “So we feel comfortable with both guys.”Howard, who has started the first six games for the Wildcats (4-2, 2-1 Big 12), has struggled at times this season. He has thrown for 1,310 yards with nine touchdown passes and seven interceptions. That includes three picks two weeks ago at Oklahoma State, when the senior quarterback was just 15 of 34 for 152 yards and a touchdown in the 29-21 loss.That defeat, coupled with a loss to Missouri in which Howard also struggled, left the Wildcats in a tough position in the Big 12 race. They face TCU on Saturday night in a rematch of last year's conference title game, then play conference newcomer Houston before a showdown with third-ranked Texas that could help decide who plays in this year's championship game.Kansas State listed both Howard and Johnson as the starter for the Horned Frogs (4-3, 2-2), but Klieman said there will be no decision on the amount of playing time each will receive until the game plan is finalized later in the week.“If you thought it would be a 60-40, 50-50 or a 90-10 split, we have no idea,” Klieman said. “We're going to go through the game plan and see who, where and what gives us the best opportunity.”Johnson is known for his blazing speed — some say he's the fastest on the roster — and that showed last Saturday, when he carried 13 times for 90 yards and those five scores. But he also was 8 of 9 for 77 yards through the air against the Red Raiders, and he is 11 of 13 for 132 yards when figuring some playing time against Southeast Missouri State and Missouri.“We saw the speed instantly, out there running in the summer. ‘This kid can roll.’ And we got into fall camp and it was like, ‘OK, he can throw too,'" Kansas State wide receiver Jadon Jackson said. “He's something special.”Johnson got a jump on his college career last fall, when he helped lead Maize High School to a second straight Kansas state title before graduating early. That allowed him to enroll at Kansas State at the semester and take place in spring ball.“First two months he was a little quiet and things like that,” Wildcats running back Treshaun Ward said. “As he got comfortable for us, he started talking more. He's on the right track to be a leader, and he'll be an incredible leader, too.”

🏈 Week 8 Kpreps high school rankings

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Following its 38-21 victory at Texas Tech, Kansas State collected a pair of Big 12 Player of the Week accolades as senior safety&nbsp;Kobe Savage&nbsp;earned the defensive honor and freshman quarterback&nbsp;Avery Johnson&nbsp;was named the newcomer of the week, the conference office announced Monday.

It is the second and third weekly conference honors this year for the Wildcats as running back&nbsp;DJ Giddens&nbsp;was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week after his performance against UCF.

Savage registered his second-career Big 12 weekly honor as he was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after last season’s game at Oklahoma. This past weekend at Texas Tech, Savage registered seven tackles and picked off a pair of passes, including one that led to the final K-State touchdown of the night. Savage became the first Wildcat with multiple interceptions in a game since Kevion McGee had two at Iowa State in the 2018 finale, while he is the first K-State safety to do so since Travis Green against Texas Tech in 2014.

A native of Paris, Texas, Savage has one of seven games in the Big 12 this season with two interceptions, which is tied for the fourth most nationally in a game this year. He now ranks third nationally among active players in career interceptions per game (0.31), while he ranks seventh in career solo tackles per game (4.25).

Johnson is the 11th&nbsp;Wildcat to be named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year since the award began in 2016, while it is the second-straight year the Wildcats earned the honor after playing the Red Raiders. Johnson scored five rushing touchdowns on the night to tie the school record with former quarterback and current K-State offensive coordinator&nbsp;Collin Klein&nbsp;(2011 vs. Texas A&amp;M) as well as quarterback Jonathan Beasley (2000 vs. North Texas). It is the most rushing touchdowns in a game this year, while it is the most by any true freshman nationally since Oklahoma’s Samaje Perine had five against Kansas in 2014.

Johnson, a product of Wichita, Kansas, set the Big 12 record for rushing touchdowns by a true freshman quarterback, while it is the most nationally by a true freshman quarterback since at least 1995. It was also the first time any Big 12 player had at least five rushing touchdowns in a game since 2016.

Kansas State returns home for the first time in nearly a month as the Wildcats host TCU on Saturday inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium, in a 6 p.m., game that will be televised by ESPN2.

This past weekend at Texas Tech, Savage registered seven tackles and picked off a pair of passes, including one that led to the final K-State touchdown of the night. Savage became the first Wildcat with multiple interceptions in a game since Kevion McGee had two at Iowa State in the 2018 finale, while he is the first K-State safety to do so since Travis Green against Texas Tech in 2014.A native of Paris, Texas, Savage has one of seven games in the Big 12 this season with two interceptions, which is tied for the fourth most nationally in a game this year. He now ranks third nationally among active players in career interceptions per game (0.31), while he ranks seventh in career solo tackles per game (4.25).Johnson is the 11th&nbsp;Wildcat to be named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year since the award began in 2016, while it is the second-straight year the Wildcats earned the honor after playing the Red Raiders. Johnson scored five rushing touchdowns on the night to tie the school record with former quarterback and current K-State offensive coordinator&nbsp;Collin Klein&nbsp;(2011 vs. Texas A&amp;M) as well as quarterback Jonathan Beasley (2000 vs. North Texas). It is the most rushing touchdowns in a game this year, while it is the most by any true freshman nationally since Oklahoma’s Samaje Perine had five against Kansas in 2014.Johnson, a product of Wichita, Kansas, set the Big 12 record for rushing touchdowns by a true freshman quarterback, while it is the most nationally by a true freshman quarterback since at least 1995. Bill Self likes to remind his team that the faces may change at Kansas but the expectations within his program never do.

Expectations outside the program? Turns out they are as high as possible this year.

The Jayhawks were the clear No. 1 pick in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">AP Top 25 preseason men's basketball poll</a>&nbsp;released Monday, earning 46 of 63 first-place votes to easily outdistance No. 2 Duke and No. 3 Purdue. It's the third time since Self's arrival in Lawrence in 2003 that his team will start the season on top but the first time since the 2018-19 season.

“You know you'll have a target on your back playing at Kansas,” said Kevin McCullar Jr., who decided to return for a second season with the Jayhawks and fifth in college hoops. "We'll have that chip on our shoulder, you know, prove everybody wrong, and state why you should be the No. 1 team in the nation. You go out there and use that. You use that as fuel every day.”

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-jayhawks-ncaa-infractions-99082309c82877e62ee16e0f5e33b348">The Jayhawks</a>&nbsp;had a disappointing follow-up to their 2022 national title last season, losing to Texas in the Big 12 championship and falling to Arkansas in the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Self missed both of those events after having&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-bill-self-hospital-ncaa-coach-jayhawks-2053ffeb102c7dfb418109215dab554b">a valve in his heart replaced</a>, but the 60-year-old coach is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-jayhawks-ncaa-infractions-99082309c82877e62ee16e0f5e33b348">back on the sideline</a>&nbsp;and chasing a third national title in the 75th anniversary season of the AP poll.

He has three returning starters in McCullar, DaJuan Harris Jr. and KJ Adams, along with top-50 recruit Elmarko Jackson and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dickinson-kansas-michigan-f00c4df23a288b94f9b4397ac2bcdc44">Michigan transfer Hunter Dickinson</a>, perhaps the biggest prize of this past summer's portal moves.

“I think that this summer certainly put us probably ahead since we have so many new faces, even though our core still the same with one and K.J. and Kevin,” said Self, whose team played during a preseason tour of the Caribbean. “The chemistry is certainly one that I don’t know that we’re ahead of schedule, but they certainly seem to like to play off each other.”

Duke picked up 11 first-place votes to land at No. 2 in Jon Scheyer's second season, and Purdue got three first-place nods as they try to avenge a stunning end to last season.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ap-player-of-year-edey-97210ca64c44cd64ca0120406dcc969a#:~:text=Dominating%20at%20both%20ends%20of,Jackson%2DDavis%20getting%20the%20other.">AP player of the year Zach Edey</a>&nbsp;and the Boilermakers became the second men’s No. 1 seed to lose to a No. 16 seed when&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/march-madness-fairleigh-dickinson-purdue-16-seed-715e3e361344928ea10880dd9a9d8a58">they lost to Fairleigh Dickinson</a>&nbsp;in the NCAA Tournament.

Edey's deadline-day decision to return to the Boilermakers, rather than turn pro, kept them a national title contender.

“We had a tough finish to the season losing in the first round. Hopefully that sits with us as a coaching staff and really as a program to make us better, so we can have more success in March,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “But as you guys all know, it doesn’t start there. The process starts all over, and you can’t miss any steps.”

Michigan State was fourth with one first-place vote, its highest ranking since December 2020, and Marquette rounded out the top five with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/march-madness-coach-of-year-shaka-smart-af9b1b2a9f798a03708fd99fdb7ce834">AP coach of the year Shaka Smart</a>&nbsp;returning a loaded squad led by third-team All-American Tyler Kolek.

That's the highest ranking for the Golden Eagles since they were No. 3 in March 1978, when they were known as the Warriors.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/final-four-uconn-san-diego-state-1de224560610defcbc4eb9c40cbb588a">Defending national champion UConn</a>&nbsp;was sixth with two first-place votes after losing standouts Adam Sanogo and Jordan Hawkins. The Huskies were followed by Big 12 newcomer Houston, Creighton, Tennessee and Florida Atlantic, which returns just about everyone from the team that went 35-4 and made&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/final-four-fau-carrot-top-fdda483a522a52c9450303957e05bb02">a surprising Final Four run</a>&nbsp;last season.

“We have some guys that are ready to play, have been ready to play but under circumstances have had to take a back seat," said Owls coach Dusty May, whose team has jumped from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference.

“We'll be a little different," May said, "but we'll still be versatile and we'll play a lot of guys.”

Gonzaga was No. 11 followed by Arizona, Miami, Arkansas and Texas A&amp;M. Kentucky came in at No. 16 with national runner-up San Diego State next, while Texas, North Carolina and Baylor rounded out the top 20.

The final five were Southern California, Villanova, Saint Mary's, Alabama and Illinois.

The SEC led the way with five teams in the preseason poll, with Tennessee in the top 10. The Big 12 and Big East had four apiece with the latter landing three among the top eight in Marquette, UConn and Creighton. The ACC and Big Ten had three apiece.

Wisconsin, Colorado and UCLA are the first three outside the Top 25; the Bruins were No. 7 in the final poll last season. Also on the outside were Xavier and Kansas State, both of whom were in the top 15 entering last year's NCAA Tournament.

The season begins for most teams Nov. 6 with some big-time matchups in the first couple of weeks. That includes the annual Champions Classic doubleheader, this time in Chicago, where No. 2 Duke will play fourth-ranked Michigan State and top-ranked Kansas will face No. 16 Kentucky.

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Fort Hays State women's soccer team prevailed on the road against Rogers State on Sunday by a score of 1-0. The Tigers now sit in a two-way tie for first place in the league with an overall record of 10-1-3, 6-0-1 in MIAA play, while Rogers State drops to 6-6-2, 3-4 in conference games.

Another defensive battle took place in the early portions of Sunday's match for the Tigers with both teams being held scoreless through the first half. Only six shots were kicked in the first half, 4-2 in favor of Fort Hays State. All four of FHSU's shots were on goal in the first period. The Tigers did also earn two corner kicks.

Fort Hays State had more offensive opportunities in the second period, shooting nine total shots in the second half. Allison Worley&nbsp;connected for the lone score of the game in the 57th minute off an assist from Kintzli Wagner.

The Tiger defended the box at a high level throughout the match, allowing just one shot on goal from the Hillcats that was saved by Isabel Robben.

Coach Tyson John&nbsp;and his team have played just four road games thus far in the season and are now 3-1 in those contests.

The Tigers will play again next weekend on the road against Missouri Southern State on Friday, October 20, in Joplin, Mo. at 6 p.m.

HAYS, Kan. - Shane Watts rushed for a career-high 162 yards, the Tiger defense had four sacks and FHSU overcame four turnovers to beat Nebraska-Kearney 31-17 Saturday at Lewis Field for their third-straight win.

The Tigers (5-2, 4-2 MIAA) raced out to a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter and held the Lopers (2-5, 2-5 MIAA) at bay the rest of the way thanks in part to a solid ground game that produced 235 yards while holding UNK to just 165 yards of total offense.

Watts led the Tigers rushing attack with 162 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown. He also caught a pair of passes for 19 yards for 181 all-purpose yards. Travis Dixon added a season-high 57 yards on seven carries.
