🤼‍♀️ No. 20 FHSU women place second at regionals, qualify nine for nationals

DENTON, Texas - The 20th-ranked Fort Hays State women's wrestling team will send nine individuals to the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships after placing second as a team at the NCWWC Region 8 Championships on Saturday. The Tigers had 11 of their 15 competitors place, including one champion, two that finished runner-up, three that placed both third and fourth and one that placed both fifth and sixth.

The Tigers finished higher in the standings than four ranked teams, including No. 9 Simon Fraser, No. 12 Adams State, No. 22 Schreiner and No. 22 William Jewel. Eighth-ranked Colorado Mesa took home the regional title, beating the Tigers by 25 team points, 192-167.Fort Hays State's 15 competitors combined for a 38-24 record on the day, racking up 15 pins and 27 bonus-point wins to lead the tournament in each category. The 11 Tiger placers were second-most in the field, one behind Mesa's 12 placers.

Piper Cadden claimed the regional title at 131 pounds after finishing the day 4-0. The redshirt-freshman recorded a pair of technical falls before picking up decisions in both the semifinals and championship. Cadden defeated teammate Jamie Laswell in the title match, who finished second after going 3-1 on the day with two technical falls and one decision.

Nichole Moore, the seventh-ranked wrestler at 138 pounds according to the most recent NWCA national rankings, finished second in her weight class after nearly completing a big rally in the title bout. Moore opened the day with a pin before adding a technical fall in the quarterfinals. She then advanced to the final with a 6-3 decision before suffering a narrow 12-11 loss against a ranked opponent. Moore fell behind 12-3 in the final bout before scoring a pair of four-point maneuvers in the final 76 seconds to close within one.

Ashlynn Goodwin (138 pounds), Dylen Ritchey (145 pounds) and Isabella Renfro (180 pounds) all placed third in their respective weight class. Ritchey led the Tigers with 19 team points after rattling off four pins on the backside, finishing the day 4-1. The freshman jumped in front 6-0 in her first bout before falling via pin but bounced back with those four-stright pins.

Goodwin also turned in a 4-1 record on the day, with the lone loss coming in the semifinals against the eventual champion at 138 pounds. The redshirt-freshman managed two wins via pin and two decisions on the day, including a 7-5 decision in the third-place bout.

Renfro finished 3-1 on the day, with her lone loss coming against the eventual champion who is nationally ranked in the semifinals. All three of the freshman's wins were bonus-point victories, including two pins and one technical fall. Renfro took eighth-ranked Paige Maher of Simon Fraser to the second round before falling via pin in the semis. It was Maher's only bout of the tournament that reached the second round.

Josiah Ortiz (110 pounds), Lindsey Lopez (117 pounds) and Hailey Conley (207 pounds) all finished fourth with 3-2 records to secure the final national bid at their weight class. All three fell in the third-place match but claimed the true fourth bout via no contests due to previous wins over their opponents. Josiah picked up a pair of first-period pins, while Lindsey tallied a pair of technical falls and Conley turned in two wins via decision.

Isabell Ortiz tied for the team lead with four wins on the day, going 4-2 at 117 pounds to place fifth. The redshirt sophomore won her opening bout via technical fall before falling to the eventual runner-up. Isabell followed that up with a pair of bonus-point wins in the consolation bracket before falling in the consolation semifinal. She then bounced back to record a pin in less than one minute in the fifth-place bout.

Hannah Selle (103 pounds), 10th-ranked Lexie Lopez (124 pounds), Kaylee Ricketts (160 pounds) and Josie Houk (160 pounds) all picked up one win on the day, with Selle placing third at 103 pounds.

The nine Tigers that have qualified for the national tournament will head to Coralville, Iowa for the event March 7-8.
