STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Ollie Gordon II gained 284 yards from scrimmage and scored two touchdowns to help Oklahoma State defeat No. 23 Kansas 39-32 on Saturday.

Gordon ran for a career-high 168 yards and caught six passes for a career-best 116. He became the first Oklahoma State player since Gerald Hudson in 1989 to have at least 100 yards rushing and receiving in a game.

Alan Bowman passed for 336 yards and two touchdowns, Rashod Owens had career highs of nine catches and 112 yards and Brennan Presley caught a touchdown pass and ran for the go-ahead score with 2:32 remaining for Oklahoma State (4-2, 2-1 Big 12). The Cowboys gained 554 yards to win their second straight after upsetting Kansas State last Friday.

Kansas (5-2, 2-2) was without quarterback Jalon Daniels for the third straight game because of a back injury. Jason Bean stepped in and passed for career highs of 410 yards and five touchdowns, but he threw two interceptions.

On the game's opening drive, Gordon caught a 50-yard pass from Bowman, then caught a short pass from Bowman and took it 17 yards to the end zone. On the next drive, Bowman found Presley for a 20-yard score to make it 14-0.

Bean rallied the Jayhawks by throwing four touchdown passes in the first half. The fourth, a 49-yarder to Quentin Skinner, put Kansas up 25-24 — a score that held up until the break. Bean completed 13 of 17 passes for 274 yards and four touchdowns in the first half. Bowman passed for 261 yards and two scores for the Cowboys while Gordon had 177 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns in the first two quarters.

Alex Hale missed a 43-yard field goal with 9:38 remaining that would have put Oklahoma State up 33-32, but the Cowboys scored in the closing minutes after a Kansas turnover. Presley went in motion, took the handoff and scored from 6 yards out to put the Cowboys ahead for good. Kansas got the ball down 39-32 with 15 seconds remaining and no timeouts and could not mount a threat.

Kansas: The Jayhawks moved the ball, but their defense struggled. The Cowboys entered the game averaging 4.3 yards a carry, but they averaged 5.7 on Saturday.

Oklahoma State: Bowman continues to string together solid performances. The Cowboys were platooning quarterbacks before settling on the Michigan transfer. Oklahoma State is 2-1 since giving Bowman the full-time job.

Kansas will likely drop out. Oklahoma State may get some votes.

Oklahoma State: Visits West Virginia on Saturday.

To start the match, the Tiger's had a few opportunities on goal, but could not convert. The Fort Hays Tigers attempted to counterattack, but the Hillcats' defense held strong even against the wind.

⚽ Tiger men shutout at home by Hillcats

HAYS - Hays High finished second at the Western Athletic Conference round-robin tournament in Dodge City.

The Indians' only loss was to Great Bend.

Hays opened the day with a sweep of Liberal (25-17, 25-20) before falling to Great Bend (25-27, 14-25).

The Indians then bounced back with wins over Dodge City (25-22, 25-19) and Garden City (25-20, 25-22).

Great Bend won the conference crown going 4-0. The Panthers are 30-4 on the season.

This will be the 69th meeting all-time between the Tigers and Lopers, which dates back to 1926. UNK holds a slight advantage 35-32-1, but FHSU is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings. FHSU had a nine-game win streak over UNK from 2012-2021, but it was snapped last year in Kearney when a No. 23 ranked Loper squad turned away the Tigers 38-20. It was the first win for UNK in MIAA play against the Tigers. Fort Hays State has won five straight over UNK in Hays, including a thrilling come-from-behind 42-35 win in the last meeting in Hays back on Homecoming in 2021.

Fort Hays State has won two in a row entering Saturday. They have averaged 53 points in those two wins after a 71-3 win over Lincoln on Homecoming and then a 35-22 win last week at Missouri Southern. The Tigers have elevated their rushing attack over the last two weeks, averaging 217.5 yards on the ground in the two wins. FHSU moved the ball well in both contests, averaging 8.18 yards per play in the pair of wins.

Nebraska-Kearney is coming off a 38-14 loss at nationally ranked Central Missouri last week. The Lopers have wins over Northeastern State and Washburn, both at home this year, but sit at 0-3 in road games. Two of their three road games were against nationally ranked opponents and the other was a close three-point loss at Central Oklahoma in the season opener. The Lopers are in their first season under head coach Ryan Held after going 8-3 overall last year and tying for third in the MIAA. Quarterback TJ Davis is the top offensive threat for UNK with 1,126 passing yards and a team-best 369 rushing yards.

Three of his receiving targets are among the top 15 in the MIAA in receiving yards per game, which includes Trevor Watts&nbsp;(60.7), Hayden Horace&nbsp;(58.8), and Bryson Smith&nbsp;(56.5). In the ground game, Shane Watts&nbsp;leads the Tigers with 234 yards, coming off a career-best 96 yards last week at Missouri Southern.

Saturday's game will be the sixth between the two schools. KWU has a 3-2 lead in the series but Avila has won two of the last three including an 18-14 victory last season at JRI Stadium. The Eagles won 30-20 in Kansas City in 2021 and KWU 46-38 in 2020 at Graves Family Sports Complex.

The Coyotes won three games in a row before taking last Saturday off that was part of the KCAC-wide bye week. They defeated McPherson 10-7 September 30 in McPherson before the break. The defense was superb once again limiting the Bulldogs to 297 yards and 35 points below their season average.

After going 4-2 against teams in the Dr. Ted Kessinger Division the Coyotes' the last five games will be against their opponents in the Gene Bissell Division. The division winners receive berths in the NAIA playoffs.

KWU's opponents are averaging 15.5 points and 288.7 yards per game – 135 rushing and 153.7 passing. The Coyotes are averaging 18.3 points and 253 yards – 127.8 rushing and 125.2 passing.

Freshman quarterback Byron McNair made his college debut in the third quarter against McPherson and led the Coyotes on a game-winning 75-yard, nine-play drive in the fourth quarter. He was 7 of 11 passing for 115 yards and had 15 yards rushing on seven carries. Richard Lara started the game and was 7 of 16 for 54 yards.

Coach Matt Myers said a decision on Saturday's starting quarterback would be made later in the week. 

The Eagles have lost five in a row since defeating Bethany in the season opener. They lost to Evangel 44-6 in their game before the break and fell to McPherson 42-21 the previous week.

Opponents have averaged 42.3 points and 476.3 yards this season. Avila is averaging 26.7 points and 353.5 yards (224.7 passing) per game.

Quarterback Eli Williams has had a terrific sophomore season thus far. A transfer from TCU before last season the 6-foot-4 Williams has thrown for 1,334 yards with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also has a team-best 313 yards rushing and seven more touchdowns. 

Williams threw for 140 yards, two touchdowns and had 43 yards rushing in Avila's victory over KWU last season.

Kareem Chambers (22 receptions, 225 yards) and Robert Brooks (20-227) are the top wide receivers in 2023. Three others have at least 13 catches.

"(Williams) is the most talented player we'll probably play against. He put up 40-plus (points) on Southwestern, he'll be a challenge to say the least. He's tall, he's fast, and he can see everything. Our job will be to contain him as much as humanly possible and force him to do some things that he's not used to doing, hopefully. We need to keep him in the pocket and make him uncomfortable. Their skill positions are really good, their tailbacks are good, their wide receivers are really good. They're a little young up front. The game is the reverse of the first half of the season when we played a lot of run-heavy teams; (Avila) throws it 80 percent of the time."

"We are going to evaluate it and put the best guy out there (at quarterback) that we think can sustain drives, make really good decisions and score points."

"Whoever dreamt up the (new KCAC) schedule was a genius. (The bye) was really nice, everyone got to relax for a week. It was a welcome respite."

LIBERAL -&nbsp;Hays traveled to Liberal on Friday with claim to the Western Athletic Conference championship on the line. The Indians never trailed but the game was far from easy as the Indians claimed a minimum share of a fourth straight WAC crown in a 48-41 double over time victory at Redskin Field.

Hays jumped out to a quick lead over the Redskins after stopping Liberal on a pair of fourth down tries. The first occurred at Liberal's own 21 after avoiding a punt into the wind. Jarek Purdy took a wide receiver reverse for 21 yards after three plays for the game's first score. The Harley Zimmerman point after attempt ricocheted off a Liberal player and through the uprights for a 7-0 lead.

Carter Graham found Johnny Cano for a 41 yard score following the defense's stop on fourth down. Leading 14-0, Derek Quach intercepted a Liberal pass to stop the Redskin drive. However Hays fumbled on the next play setting up Liberal at the 29 yard line. The Redskins scored three plays later on the first play of the second quarter. The extra point was no good.&nbsp;

Malik Bah broke off a 71 yard touchdown run on the next series for a 21-6 advantage. The Indian offense though would stall out rest of the half. Liberal quarter Brooks Kappelmann ran scores in from 55 yards and 9 yards out. Liberal went for a two point conversion after both touchdowns. Liberal failed to convert on the first but was successful on the second after a pass was tipped in the end zone and caught for a 21-20 score. Hays took the same advantage into halftime.

The two teams continued to trade punches in the second half. Graham found Cano a second time and a 9 yard score. Liberal fired right back on their own nine yard passing touchdown. The Redskins went for two and failed to convert leaving Hays with a 27-26 lead with 10:49 left in the fourth quarter.

Hays faced 4th and 17 from the Liberal 18 yard line and converted on a touchdown pass from Graham to Ian McGuire giving the Indians a 34-26 lead. Liberal tied the game following a broken play 52 yard pass and two point conversion.

Neither team could score before the end of regulation and the experienced two overtime.

Each team scored on their first play of the first session. Liberal scored first and Hays answered with a Jarek Purdy 10 yard touchdown run.&nbsp; Graham scored a seven yard touchdown run on the second play of the second overtime. Liberal had 4th and goal from the two but was held one yard short for the final of 48-41 in favor of Hays.

Hays compiled 455 yards. Liberal had 443.

The Indians are 5-2 on the year and 3-1 in conference play. Liberal falls for the first time and is 6-1, 3-1.

HAYS – The Norton Bluejays held the TMP-Marian Monarchs
offense in check for most of the night Friday while their offense controlled
the clock on their way to a 28-6 victory at Lewis Field in Hays.

TMP (4-3, 4-2 MCL, 1-2 2A D-8) opened the game with the football but the drive stalled
out near midfield as the Monarchs turned the ball over on downs.

Norton (7-0, 5-0 MCL, 3-0 2A D-8) answered with an 11-play drive that took more than
six and a half minutes off the clock as quarterback Eli Jones scored on a two-yard
run and he added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

The touchdown run was set up by a rare intentional batting
called on TMP when the officials determined TMP’s Griffin Schumacher intentionally
batted a lose ball out of the back of the endzone after a fumble into the
endzone by Norton.

On TMP’s ensuing drive the Monarchs drive deep into Norton
territory before they turned it over on downs for a second time in the first
half. 

On three first half possessions the Monarchs turned it over
on downs twice and fumbled the ball near midfield.

Norton scored a second first half touchdown on a Jones
touchdown pass with just under one minute left in the first half as the
Bluejays took a 14-0 lead into halftime.

Norton scored on the first drive of the second half and led
21-0 just under halfway through the third quarter.

The two teams then traded interceptions on the next two possessions
with TMP’s Schumacher intercepting Jones in the endzone.

Norton added a fourth touchdown midway through the third
quarter for a 28-0 lead.

TMP finally broke onto the scoreboard with just over five
minutes left in the fourth quarter, when Max Gerstner broke free for a 65-yard
touchdown run making it 28-6.

Norton outgained the Monarchs 300 to 167 total yards.

Max Gerstner led the Monarchs with a career-high 86 yards on
the ground.

Norton has now won eight straight over TMP.

The Monarchs travel to Beloit next Friday to wrap up the
regular season.

The Tigers now sit one win behind the RiverHawks in the all-time series with a record of 5-6-1 against NSU. Friday's 2-0 served to be the largest margin of victory for FHSU over Northeastern State in the series history.

The first period of Friday's match was a defensive battle with only a combined eight shots on goal. Fort Hays State was outshot 7-6 by the RiverHawks through the first 45 minutes of play. Hannah Mares&nbsp;recorded two shots in the period with one on goal. Northeastern State had two players shoot multiple shots on goal in the first frame.

The tide turned in the second period where the Fort Hays State defense did not allow a single NSU shot. Isabel Robben&nbsp;was solid in goal for the Tigers with six saves, all in the first period. FHSU stated five shots in the second period, netting two of the five. Sullivan Kelly&nbsp;broke the scoreless tie in the 68' off an assist from Jersey Garoutte. Allison Worley&nbsp;sealed the game with the second goal in the 82'. The goal by Worley notched her tenth point recorded on the season.

After wins by Washburn and Central Missouri on Friday there remains a three-way tie for first place in the MIAA conference.

The Tigers will take the pitch again on Sunday against the Rogers State Hillcats at 1 p.m. The match will be held in Claremore, Okla. at Soldier Field.&nbsp;&nbsp;

⚽ Tiger women pickup road win over RiverHawks

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team came up just short in a narrow five-set defeat Friday evening against Missouri Southern, 25-18, 29-31, 25-21, 23-25, 15-11. The Tigers (7-12, 1-9 MIAA) managed two more kills than the Lions (12-7, 5-5 MIAA), 60-58, but an 11-4 edge in service aces and nine fewer errors (40-31) allowed the visitors to leave town with the win.

The Tigers led 13-9 midway through the first set before Missouri Southern rallied to take 16 of the next 21 points to win the set, 25-18. After totaling nine kills in the first frame, Fort Hays State bounced back with 19 in the second.

Missouri Southern led by as many as six in the second set, 11-5, and later led 20-16 before the Tigers came storming back with a four-point run to tie the score. The teams traded points until FHSU took its first lead of the set at 26-25 on back-to-back kills from Riley Tinder. The Tigers were unable to capitalize on a pair of set-point opportunities, allowing MSSU to go back on top and have their own chance at the set, 29-28. Gracie Rains&nbsp;would not allow that to happen, however, with the sophomore rattling off three consecutive kills to level the match, 1-1.

The Lions again pulled away early in set three, leading 17-7 and again by 10 at 19-9. Fort Hays State sprinted back into the mix with five consecutive points, closing within 20-17 and later as close as 22-21 thanks to back-to-back attack errors. But Missouri Southern was finally able to fight off the Tiger threat, scoring the next three to close out the set, 25-21.

Fort Hays State took a turn at jumping out in front in set four, taking eight of the first 12 rallies to lead by four, 8-4. MSSU closed within two before a 6-2 run aided by multiple Emily Ellis&nbsp;kills gave the Tigers a six-point edge, 19-13. The Lions managed to close within one late in the set, but a fourth kill in the set from Ellis gave the Tigers the 25-23 win and sent things to a fifth and final set.

Both teams were efficient on offense in the final set, combining for just three errors. The Tigers took an early three-point lead and again led by three when the teams swapped sides, 8-5. But the Lions roared back after that point, taking 10 of the final 13 rallies to seal the set, 15-11, and secure the match.

Tinder recorded a double-double, totaling 11 kills and 20 digs to match Brooke Hyland&nbsp;for the team lead in digs. Rains paced the team with 21 kills while adding four block assists.  </figure>FHSU AthleticsHAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team came up just short in a narrow five-set defeat Friday evening against Missouri Southern, 25-18, 29-31, 25-21, 23-25, 15-11. The Tigers (7-12, 1-9 MIAA) managed two more kills than the Lions (12-7, 5-5 MIAA), 60-58, but an 11-4 edge in service aces and nine fewer errors (40-31) allowed the visitors to leave town with the win.The Tigers led 13-9 midway through the first set before Missouri Southern rallied to take 16 of the next 21 points to win the set, 25-18. After totaling nine kills in the first frame, Fort Hays State bounced back with 19 in the second.Missouri Southern led by as many as six in the second set, 11-5, and later led 20-16 before the Tigers came storming back with a four-point run to tie the score. The teams traded points until FHSU took its first lead of the set at 26-25 on back-to-back kills from Riley Tinder. The Tigers were unable to capitalize on a pair of set-point opportunities, allowing MSSU to go back on top and have their own chance at the set, 29-28. Gracie Rains&nbsp;would not allow that to happen, however, with the sophomore rattling off three consecutive kills to level the match, 1-1.The Lions again pulled away early in set three, leading 17-7 and again by 10 at 19-9. Fort Hays State sprinted back into the mix with five consecutive points, closing within 20-17 and later as close as 22-21 thanks to back-to-back attack errors. But Missouri Southern was finally able to fight off the Tiger threat, scoring the next three to close out the set, 25-21.Fort Hays State took a turn at jumping out in front in set four, taking eight of the first 12 rallies to lead by four, 8-4. MSSU closed within two before a 6-2 run aided by multiple Emily Ellis&nbsp;kills gave the Tigers a six-point edge, 19-13. The Lions managed to close within one late in the set, but a fourth kill in the set from Ellis gave the Tigers the 25-23 win and sent things to a fifth and final set.Both teams were efficient on offense in the final set, combining for just three errors. The Tigers took an early three-point lead and again led by three when the teams swapped sides, 8-5. But the Lions roared back after that point, taking 10 of the final 13 rallies to seal the set, 15-11, and secure the match.Tinder recorded a double-double, totaling 11 kills and 20 digs to match Brooke Hyland&nbsp;for the team lead in digs. The Indians are coming off win over Dodge City, their second
straight victory, to improve to 4-2 and they are 2-1 in the WAC.

Liberal enters the contest a perfect 6-0 and they are 3-0 in
the WAC after a win over Great Bend last week.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Lewis Field in Hays. Live

This is the 47th meeting between Hays and Liberal. Liberal
leads the series 27-19 despite the Indians wining 13 of the last 14 games and
each of the last six. Prior to the 2009 season Liberal dominated the series
winning 26 of 32 games. 

The two played a single game in 1973 with Hays winning
34-30. Liberal won each game played from 1977 through 1980 before a two-year
break was taken. The two started playing every year in 1983. The Indians only
wins from that 1983 season through 2008 came in 1986 and 1987…1990…2001…and
2006. In the Indians run of winning 13 of 14 beginning in 2009 the games have
been solidly in favor of Hays. Only three of the 13 wins by Hays have been by
one score. 

The 47th game in the series puts it three behind the 50
plays against TMP/St. Joes, a series that has not been played since 1986. Hays
owns a 30-19-1 advantage over the Monarchs.

&nbsp; HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Athletics will welcome eight new members into the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, October 28, 2023. The inductees going into the Hall of Fame this year include Dale Votapka (Wrestling, 1959-60), Jim Beltch (Wrestling, 1958-62), Steve Boehmer (Track &amp; Field/Cross Country, 1967-71), Richard &amp; Tawnita Augustine (Women's Gymnastics, 1981-90), Daniel Traffas (Baseball, 1994-95), Shawn Behr (Football, 1994-95), Jamie (Heiman) Dreher (Women's Basketball, 1999-2003), and Tyrone Shephard (Men's Basketball, 2004-06).

The induction ceremony will take place the morning of Saturday, October 28 inside the Memorial Union on the campus of Fort Hays State University. Registration for the invitation only event begins at 8 AM and the ceremony begins at 9 AM. The new Hall of Fame class will then be recognized publicly at halftime of the Fort Hays State vs. Central Oklahoma football game, which begins at 1:00 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dale Votapka (Wrestling, 1958-60) A native of Oberlin, Kansas, Dale Votapka was a two-time NAIA All-America performer at Fort Hays State in wrestling. He was the first All-America performer in the program's history, placing third nationally at 115 pounds in 1959. He then finished as national runner-up at 115 pounds in 1960. His national title match in 1960 was against Gray Simons of Lock Haven, who is mentioned among the all-time wrestling greats in the United States as a four-time NAIA national champ, three-time NCAA champ, and two-time Olympian. Prior to enrolling at FHSU, Votapka served in the Navy and was on the All-Navy Wrestling Team in both 1956 and 1957. He placed fifth in the 1956 U.S. Olympic Trials. Once Votapka completed his tour of duty in the Navy, he attended FHSU. He was the Missouri Valley AAU champion three times. Votapka was elected to the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 1984. He officiated wrestling at the high school level for 23 years, including 10 consecutive state championship tournaments. Votapka passed away in 2007.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jim Beltch (Wrestling, 1958-62) A native of Goodland, Kansas, Jim Beltch was a two-time NAIA All-America performer at Fort Hays State in wrestling. He wrestled for four years at FHSU from 1958-62. He was the second All-America performer in program history at FHSU, placing third nationally at 115 pounds in 1961 and was national runner-up at 115 pounds in 1962. He gave FHSU a four-year run of having an All-America performer at 115 pounds, following Dale Votapka who was the program's first All-America performer with the same progression of national placements in 1959 and 1960 (3rd and 2nd). His national title match in 1962 was against Gray Simons of Lock Haven, who is mentioned among the all-time wrestling greats in the United States as a four-time NAIA national champ, three-time NCAA national champ, and two-time Olympian. Beltch was a four-time Missouri Valley AAU champion. He went on to coach in Kansas for 33 years, which included stops at Atwood Junior High School, Wellington High School, and Lawrence High School. He also served as a referee for 35 years at the youth, high school, and junior college levels. He was inducted into the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 2018.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Steve Boehmer (Track &amp; Field, 1967-71) A native of Bern, Kansas, Steve Boehmer was the indoor 1,000-yard run national champion in 1971, running the distance in a time of 2:14, which gained him NAIA All-America honors. He was a member of the 1969 FHSU National Championship Cross Country team and contributed to a second-place team finish at nationals in 1970. Boehmer was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champion in the 880-yard run in 1969. He was a member of the 2-mile relay team that finished second at the NAIA Indoor Championships in 1968. He was a member of a distance medley relay team that went undefeated at the Texas, Kansas, and Drake Relays.

Richard &amp; Tawnita Augustine (Women's Gymnastics, 1981-90) Richard and Tawnita Augustine served as coaches of the Fort Hays State women's gymnastics team from 1981 to 1990 and took over the head coaching role in 1983. The program had great success, producing eight All-America performers including Vicki (Thom) Smith, Amy Richardson, Shae Donham, Rena Lucke, Cary Hertel, Lisa Fenton, Carol Anne Leslie, and Jacque Douglas. They guided the program to Top-5 finishes in the NAIA five times (1982, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988). Within their time coaching the Tigers, they helped transition the program from the NAIA to NCAA Division II. The program competed in both NAIA and NCAA Division II in 1988. The sport of gymnastics was strong in Kansas when they started with the program, but over time the shrinking number of local high school programs led to the need to recruit the entire nation. The Augustines reached out far and wide to build FHSU into a national championship contender by the mid-1980s with athletes from all over the United States including Hawaii, New York, Alaska, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Maryland, Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, and Kansas. By the last year of the program in 1990, FHSU was the only school remaining in Kansas with a women's team.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Daniel Traffas (Baseball, 1994-95) A native of Sharon, Kansas, Daniel Traffas was a pitcher at Fort Hays State for two seasons. He was the 1995 Mile High Intercollegiate Baseball League Pitcher of the Year as a senior, posting an 8-3 record with a 2.47 ERA. He made 12 starts that season and threw eight complete games. Three of those complete games were shutouts, with the last coming in the Mile High Intercollegiate Baseball League Tournament championship game that the Tigers won 4-0 over Mesa State at Larks Park to end a 34-13 season. Traffas struck out 65 batters in 76.2 innings of work and held opponents to a .213 batting average for the season. Traffas finished with a career record of 14-4 overall, which included a 6-1 campaign his junior year when he had 61 strikeouts in 52.1 innings of work and a 3.44 ERA. His .777 career win percentage at FHSU is still among the Top 10 in program history and his eight complete games in 1995 is tied for the most by a Tiger pitcher in a season since 1980. Traffas ranks seventh in career strikeouts per innings pitched rate (0.98). His 2.86 career ERA is ninth in program history, but best for the program since 1980.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Shawn Behr (Football, 1994-95) A native of Great Bend, Kan., Shawn Behr was an AP All-America First Team selection at quarterback during his senior year of 1995. That year he set a new single-season passing yards record at FHSU with 3,497, completing 211 of 365 attempts, helping FHSU to an 8-2-2 record overall and a tie for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title with Western State, both at 6-0-1 after tying in the regular season finale in Gunnison. His passing yards record stood for 15 years until 2010. He also set the school record for passing touchdowns in a season with 34, which stood for 24 years until 2019. Behr led NCAA Division II in passing yards for the regular season in 1995 with 3,158. He helped the Tigers rank as high as No. 18 in the nation that year, make an apperance in the NCAA Division II Playoffs, and tie the school record for wins in a season at the time. The 1995 season was the only year Behr was the Tigers' starting quarterback after serving as a back up to Dustin McEwen in 1994. Behr threw for over 300 yards in a game six times in 1995, with a season-high of 390 against New Mexico Highlands on 24 completions. Even with just his one year as a starter, Behr ranked third on FHSU's career passing yards (3,550) list at the end of his career, only behind Robert Long (7,002) and Dustin McEwen (5,718). Following his years at FHSU, Behr went on to play professionally in the World League of Professional Football for the Helsinki Roosters.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jamie (Heiman) Dreher (Women's Basketball, 1999-2003) A native of Baileyville, Kansas, Jamie Heiman was a three-time all-conference performer in women's basketball at Fort Hays State, playing from 1999-2003. She ranks seventh on the all-time scoring list at FHSU with 1,492 points, but ranked fifth when she completed her career. She was twice an All-RMAC East Division Second Team selection as a sophomore and junior before earning First Team honors as a senior. She averaged double figures in scoring all four years, finishing with a career average of 13.2 per game. She made 108 starts in 113 career games played. A 15.3 points per game and 8.4 rebounds per game average were her highest single-season averages for each category, occurring during her junior year. She scored at least 388 points and pulled down at least 200 rebounds in each of her last three seasons. She ranks fifth all-time in rebounds at FHSU with 841, sixth in field goals made with 555, sixth in free throws made with 361, and seventh in blocked shots with 121. Heiman was also rock-solid in the classroom, named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Student-Athlete of the Year for Fort Hays State University in 2001-02 and she twice earned CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team honors.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tyrone Shephard (Men's Basketball, 2004-06) A native of Seattle, Washington, Tyrone Shephard was the 2005-06 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year in a season where he helped Fort Hays State to a 27-4 overall record. The team reached the No. 1 ranking in the NABC Top 25 Poll and made it to the semifinals of the NCAA Central Regional. He was also an All-America Third Team selection that year by Daktronics and Division II Bulletin. He helped the Tigers go near-perfect in conference play with an 18-1 record in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and had an 18-game win streak that season. Shephard was a two-time All-RMAC selection, earning second-team honors in his junior year of 2004-05 before the first-team and conference player of the year honors in 2005-06. Shephard led a very balanced team in scoring his senior year at 13.8 points per game, shooting 47.3 percent overall, 43.3 percent from beyond the 3-point line, and 78 percent at the free-throw line, reaching double figures in scoring 20 times that season with 32 being his top scoring mark of the season. Shephard also led the Tigers in scoring his junior year at 13.9 points per game and scored a total of 816 points over his two years at FHSU. Shephard went on to play professionally in Mexico for two years following his time at FHSU.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Boehmer was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champion in the 880-yard run in 1969. He was a member of the 2-mile relay team that finished second at the NAIA Indoor Championships in 1968. He was a member of a distance medley relay team that went undefeated at the Texas, Kansas, and Drake Relays.Richard &amp; Tawnita Augustine (Women's Gymnastics, 1981-90) Richard and Tawnita Augustine served as coaches of the Fort Hays State women's gymnastics team from 1981 to 1990 and took over the head coaching role in 1983. The program had great success, producing eight All-America performers including Vicki (Thom) Smith, Amy Richardson, Shae Donham, Rena Lucke, Cary Hertel, Lisa Fenton, Carol Anne Leslie, and Jacque Douglas. They guided the program to Top-5 finishes in the NAIA five times (1982, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988). Within their time coaching the Tigers, they helped transition the program from the NAIA to NCAA Division II. The program competed in both NAIA and NCAA Division II in 1988. The sport of gymnastics was strong in Kansas when they started with the program, but over time the shrinking number of local high school programs led to the need to recruit the entire nation. The Augustines reached out far and wide to build FHSU into a national championship contender by the mid-1980s with athletes from all over the United States including Hawaii, New York, Alaska, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Maryland, Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, and Kansas. By the last year of the program in 1990, FHSU was the only school remaining in Kansas with a women's team.&nbsp;&nbsp;Daniel Traffas (Baseball, 1994-95) A native of Sharon, Kansas, Daniel Traffas was a pitcher at Fort Hays State for two seasons. He was the 1995 Mile High Intercollegiate Baseball League Pitcher of the Year as a senior, posting an 8-3 record with a 2.47 ERA. He made 12 starts that season and threw eight complete games. Three of those complete games were shutouts, with the last coming in the Mile High Intercollegiate Baseball League Tournament championship game that the Tigers won 4-0 over Mesa State at Larks Park to end a 34-13 season. Traffas struck out 65 batters in 76.2 innings of work and held opponents to a .213 batting average for the season. Traffas finished with a career record of 14-4 overall, which included a 6-1 campaign his junior year when he had 61 strikeouts in 52.1 innings of work and a 3.44 ERA. His .777 career win percentage at FHSU is still among the Top 10 in program history and his eight complete games in 1995 is tied for the most by a Tiger pitcher in a season since 1980. Traffas ranks seventh in career strikeouts per innings pitched rate (0.98). His 2.86 career ERA is ninth in program history, but best for the program since 1980.&nbsp;&nbsp;Shawn Behr (Football, 1994-95) A native of Great Bend, Kan., Shawn Behr was an AP All-America First Team selection at quarterback during his senior year of 1995. That year he set a new single-season passing yards record at FHSU with 3,497, completing 211 of 365 attempts, helping FHSU to an 8-2-2 record overall and a tie for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title with Western State, both at 6-0-1 after tying in the regular season finale in Gunnison. His passing yards record stood for 15 years until 2010. He also set the school record for passing touchdowns in a season with 34, which stood for 24 years until 2019. Behr led NCAA Division II in passing yards for the regular season in 1995 with 3,158. He helped the Tigers rank as high as No. 18 in the nation that year, make an apperance in the NCAA Division II Playoffs, and tie the school record for wins in a season at the time. The 1995 season was the only year Behr was the Tigers' starting quarterback after serving as a back up to Dustin McEwen in 1994. Behr threw for over 300 yards in a game six times in 1995, with a season-high of 390 against New Mexico Highlands on 24 completions. Even with just his one year as a starter, Behr ranked third on FHSU's career passing yards (3,550) list at the end of his career, only behind Robert Long (7,002) and Dustin McEwen (5,718). Following his years at FHSU, Behr went on to play professionally in the World League of Professional Football for the Helsinki Roosters.&nbsp;&nbsp;Jamie (Heiman) Dreher (Women's Basketball, 1999-2003) A native of Baileyville, Kansas, Jamie Heiman was a three-time all-conference performer in women's basketball at Fort Hays State, playing from 1999-2003. She ranks seventh on the all-time scoring list at FHSU with 1,492 points, but ranked fifth when she completed her career. She was twice an All-RMAC East Division Second Team selection as a sophomore and junior before earning First Team honors as a senior. She averaged double figures in scoring all four years, finishing with a career average of 13.2 per game. She made 108 starts in 113 career games played. A 15.3 points per game and 8.4 rebounds per game average were her highest single-season averages for each category, occurring during her junior year. She scored at least 388 points and pulled down at least 200 rebounds in each of her last three seasons. She ranks fifth all-time in rebounds at FHSU with 841, sixth in field goals made with 555, sixth in free throws made with 361, and seventh in blocked shots with 121. Heiman was also rock-solid in the classroom, named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Student-Athlete of the Year for Fort Hays State University in 2001-02 and she twice earned CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team honors.&nbsp;&nbsp;Tyrone Shephard (Men's Basketball, 2004-06) A native of Seattle, Washington, Tyrone Shephard was the 2005-06 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year in a season where he helped Fort Hays State to a 27-4 overall record. The team reached the No. 1 ranking in the NABC Top 25 Poll and made it to the semifinals of the NCAA Central Regional. He was also an All-America Third Team selection that year by Daktronics and Division II Bulletin. He helped the Tigers go near-perfect in conference play with an 18-1 record in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and had an 18-game win streak that season. Shephard was a two-time All-RMAC selection, earning second-team honors in his junior year of 2004-05 before the first-team and conference player of the year honors in 2005-06. Shephard led a very balanced team in scoring his senior year at 13.8 points per game, shooting 47.3 percent overall, 43.3 percent from beyond the 3-point line, and 78 percent at the free-throw line, reaching double figures in scoring 20 times that season with 32 being his top scoring mark of the season. Shephard also led the Tigers in scoring his junior year at 13.9 points per game and scored a total of 816 points over his two years at FHSU. Shephard went on to play professionally in Mexico for two years following his time at FHSU.&nbsp;&nbsp;

FHSU Athletics announces 2023 Hall of Fame inductees

A familiar name is at the top of the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Preseason Poll as Kansas was chosen to win the 2023-24 regular season title in a vote of the Conference’s head coaches. In 28 seasons, KU has been picked outright or tied for first in 20 preseason ledgers and won or shared the regular season championship in 21 years. A coaches’ preseason poll was not conducted in the Big 12’s first season of 1996-97.

This season marks the first for the Conference to compete with 14 teams. The Jayhawks were the top pick on 12 ballots and totaled 168 points. New&nbsp; Conference member Houston received the other two first-place votes and compiled 153 points. Texas (third), Baylor (fourth) and TCU (fifth) rounded out the top five. The remaining spots were Kansas State (sixth), Iowa State (seventh), Texas Tech (eighth), West Virginia (ninth), Oklahoma State (10th), Cincinnati (11th), Oklahoma (12th), BYU (13th) and UCF (14th).

The Big 12 placed seven of 10 teams in the 2023 NCAA Tournament and captured consecutive national championships in 2021 (Baylor) and 2022 (Kansas). Conference teams played in four consecutive Final Fours from 2018-2022, including three straight national championship games (2019, 2021, 2022).

Head coaches and student-athletes from each team will appear at the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tipoff, presented by Old Trapper in Kansas City, Missouri on Wednesday, October 18. 🏀 Kansas picked to win 2023-24 Big 12 men's title

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes knows the Kansas City Chiefs' offense is still trying to put everything together.

It was evident in the way they struggled against Denver on third down Thursday night. The way they kept getting bottled up in short-yardage situations. And in how they failed time after time to turn red-zone trips into touchdowns.

“Luckily for us,” Mahomes said, “our defense is playing great."

So great that Mahomes' lone touchdown pass and Harrison Butker's four field goals were enough to squeak out a 19-8 victory over the Broncos, whose own woeful offense could only manage 197 yards behind a shaky performance from Russell Wilson.

“We have guys that are starters on other teams that are trying to find a way on the football field, and when they get on the field, they're making plays,” Mahomes said of the Kansas City defense. “And they're playing with confidence.”

Mahomes finished with 306 yards passing and an interception, and a big chunk of his production went to Travis Kelce, who had nine catches for 124 yards with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/taylor-swift-travis-kelce-chiefs-broncos-b08b0e53fdd232dc0a468b5fa43b5b04">Taylor Swift again cheering him on</a>&nbsp;from an Arrowhead Stadium suite.

Still, the inability of the Chiefs (5-1) to score touchdowns rather than field goals nearly proved costly.

Butker's first three field goals helped them to a 16-0 lead, but Wilson's touchdown pass to Courtland Sutton — ruled incomplete but overturned upon review — with about six minutes remaining kept the Broncos (1-5) alive. And when Javonte Williams bulled into the end zone for the 2-point conversion, what had been a one-sided shutout was a one-possession game.

The Broncos' league-worst defense couldn't make a stop, though. Mahomes converted third-and-2 with a 28-yard pass to Rashee Rice, and that put Butker in position for a 52-yard field goal with 1:55 left that put the game away.

“Our defense was incredible tonight, as it has been,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “But we have to take care of business in the red zone. We had a lot of yards, positive yards, but you can't stall down there."

The Broncos have not beaten the Chiefs since Sept. 17, 2015, the year Peyton Manning led Denver to the Super Bowl. That was six head and interim coaches ago, and nothing changed with Sean Payton leading them Thursday night. In a league built for parity, their losing streak is the fourth-longest for any team against another in NFL history.

“I'm disappointed but I'm not discouraged,” Payton said. “Offensively we struggled throwing the ball. Our third-down numbers were poor. The turnovers, against a team like this, it's going to be tough to win the game, and yet we were still in it going into the fourth quarter. Sometimes you don't know how a game is going to unfold.”

As bad as the Broncos' defense has been this season, it was Wilson and their offense that kept dragging them down. He had 37 yards passing in the first half, and the only drive Wilson led past midfield ended on fourth down.

The Chiefs weren't doing a whole lot better.

Their first three forays into the red zone netted three points, thanks to an interception by Justin Simmons and a failed tush push out of a field-goal lineup on fourth down. Mahomes, who has struggled by his standards all season, only found his rhythm once in the first half, when he ended a 62-yard drive with a short touchdown pass to Kadarius Toney.

Butker made it 13-0 at the break when he drilled a 60-yard field goal as time expired.

The Chiefs' red-zone woes continued in the second half. They began by swiftly marching downfield and setting up first-and-goal at the Denver 8, but that soon turned into fourth-and-goal at the 7-yard line and Butker had to kick another field goal.

That was all Kansas City could muster until his clinching kick in the final minutes.

Thanks to the defense, that was all the Chiefs needed.

“I thought we did a lot of good things, just obviously red zone and some third downs we didn't execute at a high enough level,” Mahomes said. “I still think there were a lot of good things we can take from it.”

Swift watched Kelce and the Chiefs for the third time Thursday night. The two began a relationship a few weeks ago, when he invited Swift to a Chiefs game after failing to meet her during her Eras Tour. Swift flew in from Los Angeles, where she walked the red carpet on Wednesday night for the premiere of her concert film.

Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones had a sack in his eighth straight regular-season game, which trails only his own 11-game streak in 2018 for the longest in franchise history. With at least one in his first five this season, Jones broke the club record to start the season held by Hall of Famer Derrick Thomas.

Broncos: TE Greg Dulcich, who had just come off injured reserve, left in the fourth quarter with a hamstring injury. It's the same injury that landed Dulcich on IR after hurting it in Week 1 against the Raiders.

Chiefs: S Justin Reid, who had an interception earlier in the game, briefly left in the second half. WR Justin Watson left in the fourth quarter with an elbow injury sustained while trying to make a diving catch.

Chiefs: Host the Los Angeles Chargers the same day.

HAYS - The Hays High volleyball closed out their home schedule with a pair of wins Thursday at the Hays High gym. 

The Indians swept Junction City (25-18, 25-15) then defeated Salina Central in three (25-14, 25-27, 25-16).

The Indians have won seven-straight and eight of their last nine and are 18-12 on the season.

They return to action Saturday at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament Saturday in Dodge City.

In addition to being the 2023 Conference USA Player of the Year and NIT Most Outstanding Player, he was twice named to the C-USA First Team (2022, 2023) while was the league's Sixth Man of the Year as a junior in 2022.Perry scored 1,043 points in his North Texas career on 43.1 percent (299-of-694) shooting from the field, including 41.3 percent (184-of-445) from 3-point range, and 85.9 percent (261-of-304) from the free throw line.
