HAYS – The Hays Larks entered the final game of the
regular season Monday night a half-game back of idle Liberal and the top spot
in the Rocky Mountain Baseball League, need a win to claim their fifth straight
league championship.

The Larks and Bee Jays finished with identical 22-6 RMBL
records with Hays taking three-of-four in the head-to-head matchups.

And they wasted no time scoring 6 runs over the first four
innings in a 11-3 win over the Dodge City A’s.

The Larks scored single runs in the first two innings,
scoring on a bases loaded walk in the first and a Kaleb Duncan triple in the
second for a 2-1 lead.

After Dodge City scored two runs in the top of the third
Hays answered with two runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings. 

Trent Baker tripled in a run and then Thomas Lyssy followed with
an RBI double in the third making it 4-3 Larks.

Wilbert Espinal homered in the bottom of the fourth
extending the Larks lead to 6-3.

After scoring on a Kaleb Duncan RBI groundout in the sixth
the Larks broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the seventh
inning.

Bakers singled home a run, followed by a two-run double for
Lyssy who then scored on a wild pitch putting Hays up 11-3.

Lyssy doubled three times and drove in three runs and
Wilbert Espinal homered and drove in three runs. 

Dalton Campbell earned the win for Hays. He allowed three
runs on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks in five innings.

The Larks (28-8 &amp; 22-6 RMLB) open play at the NBC World
Series Friday in the 8:30 p.m. game against the Air Capital Flyers.

⚾Larks claim 5th straight RMBL title with win over A’s

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. fell a single short of the cycle, Salvador Perez and Hunter Renfroe also homered, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-4 on Monday night for their fourth straight victory.

Witt tripled in the first inning, doubled in the third and&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/MLB/status/1815559805240537297">drilled a three-run homer</a>&nbsp;to deep left-center in the fourth to get the hard part out of the way.

“It's hard to describe,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “The power he displays, the poise at the plate, it’s like he’s playing a different game.”

The crowd arose chanting “Bobby! Bobby!” when Witt came to the plate in the sixth in anticipation of a single and the first cycle by a Kansas City player in 34 years, but Arizona reliever Humberto Castellanos hit Witt with his first pitch, drawing loud boos.

“It's really unfortunate that he got hit,” Quatraro said. “I don't know what to think about the intent behind it.”

Witt got another chance in the eighth but was retired on a fly ball to right field. The last Royals player to hit for the cycle was Hall of Famer George Brett at Toronto on July 25, 1990.

“I definitely wanted to do it for the fans. These fans are awesome out here,” Witt said. “I choked at the end, but whatever.”

Witt, who was named American League Player of the Week earlier Monday, is 12 for 15 since playing in his first All-Star Game and finishing as the Home Run Derby runner-up, raising his average to .341. It was Witt’s fourth straight three-hit game, matching Johnny Damon in 2000 for the second-best such streak in franchise history, behind only Brett’s six games in 1976.

One inning after Witt was plunked, Royals reliever John Schreiber hit Gabriel Moreno with a pitch. Both benches were warned, and Arizona manager Torey Lovullo was ejected for arguing with plate umpire Jordan Baker and had to be held back. Royals catcher Perez appeared to exchange words with Lovullo during the scrum near the plate.

“I never said a word to Salvador Perez,” Lovullo said. “I just wanted him to hear what I was going to say to Jordan. I told him, ‘If you think in my right mind I was going to ask my team to hit the future of Major League Baseball, one of the best players in the game, you’re crazy. You lost control of this situation, and you got it wrong.’ I wanted Salvy to hear that and take it back to their dugout.”

The Royals (56-45), who are in position for a wild-card playoff berth, matched their win total from last season.

Cole Ragans (7-6) survived a shaky third inning to record his second straight win and his eighth quality start in nine. He allowed six hits, two walks and three runs in six innings.

The Diamondbacks took a 3-1 lead in the third when Kevin Newman and Alek Thomas hit back-to-back doubles and Ketel Marte followed with his 20th homer, a two-run shot to left.

The Royals responded in the bottom half with Witt’s double, Vinnie Pasquantino’s RBI single and Perez’s two-run homer to center for a 4-3 lead.

“Castro is no easy right-hander to face,” Quatraro said. “He comes in there and that first pitch, you don't expect him to hit a homer, but I guess you maybe start trying to expect it. It's incredible, what he's doing right now. Absolutely incredible.”

Renfroe homered in the sixth, Kyle Isbel had three hits and two RBIs, and Pasquantino had three hits for the Royals.

After giving up only one run in six innings in each of his first two major league starts, Arizona's Yilber Diaz allowed seven runs and nine hits in three-plus innings.

“He couldn’t locate his secondary stuff and became predictable with his fastball,” Lovullo said.

Diamondbacks: Lovullo said LHP Jordan Montgomery (knee) would come off the injured list and start Tuesday. RHP Merrill Kelly (shoulder) and LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (shoulder) will each throw a bullpen session Tuesday and are on track for simulated games, Thursday for Kelly and Friday for Rodriguez.

Royals: OF MJ Melendez (ankle) is close to returning, Quatraro said. Melendez is eligible to come off the IL Friday.

Alec Marsh (7-6, 3.55) will start for the Royals against Montgomery (6-5, 6.44).

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Safety Justin Reid joined a growing list of injured starters for the back-to-back champs as the Kansas City Chiefs kicked off their first full-squad workout of training camp.

The club placed Reid on the non-football injury list with a quad issue. Jaden Hicks, a fourth-round draft choice from Washington State, took Reid’s place at strong safety with the first-team defense. He played alongside free safety Bryan Cook with Chamarri Conner at nickel back.

Coach Andy Reid didn’t elaborate on the nature of the injury on Sunday, but said he doesn’t have long-term concerns for his 27-year-old defensive secondary leader.

“Listen, we’re just day-by-daying it right now and see how he does. He’s very honest with you, and he’s not going to hide anything. He’s going to make sure he tells you how he’s feeling. And so we trust him with that."

Justin Reid joined defensive end B.J. Thompson on the non-football injury list. Thompson suffered a seizure and went into cardiac arrest at the team’s training complex in Kansas City on June 6. He is currently undergoing rehab.

The team is also without left guard Joe Thuney (pectoral), defensive end Charles Omenihu (knee), defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi (tricep) and cornerback Jaylen Watson (shoulder).

Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who was placed on the non-football illness list Saturday, was cleared to resume work on Sunday and participated in the full workout.

On the fourth snap of the 11-on-11 period, quarterback Patrick Mahomes sprinted to his left and fired an off-platform throw from his back foot more than 50 yards downfield. Xavier Worthy, the No. 28 overall selection in the draft, tracked the ball perfectly while securing the reception over his shoulder in stride for a touchdown.

The play drew cheers from fans, players and coaches. The moment loomed large for Worthy after a hamstring injury sidelined him for most of the team’s offseason workouts.

“He’s been working hard,” Reid said. “Looks like his hamstring feels better. We just got to keep him going here and keep learning. We’re just one install into it, and they’ve got 12 of them. So he’s got a lot more information coming at him, and formations and shifts and motions and all that stuff. You know, he did a nice job today.”

All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones made his return to the campus of Missouri Western State University for the team’s training camp after his contract holdout kept him away last season. His head coach is among those happy to have Jones back in camp.

“Chris was one of the team captains and he’s been that now for the last couple of years, and so well-respected,” Reid said. “To have him out here, he brings energy, he always brings energy. He has fun out here and I’m glad he’s here.”

Jones turned 30 earlier this month, however, and he has asked for more time off during camp. Veterans such as Jones reported to St. Joseph on July 19 and the team breaks camp on Aug 15.

He even jokingly invoked teammate Travis Kelce into his case for time off Sunday, asking his head coach to understand that “30 hits different.”

“Travis’ job is a little more easier than mine because I’m fighting 300 pounds every play, and Travis catching the ball, fighting 135, 140 pounds,” Jones said with a grin. “You know, I just hope that (Reid) finds it in his amazing heart to give me a day or two off coming up.”

Jones has been known to make big proclamations during past camps, such as leading the league in sacks. This year he says his goals are simple, help the Chiefs win a third straight Super Bowl and earn AP Defensive Player of the Year honors.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Seth Lugo retired 14 straight batters in his first career complete game as the Kansas City Royals rallied past the Chicago White Sox for a 4-1 win and series sweep on Sunday.

Lugo (12-4) surrendered one run while striking out six on 103 pitches. He allowed an infield hit to Tommy Pham leading off the game before retiring the next 14 batters.

Nicky Lopez was hit with a pitch leading off the sixth and scored on Pham’s two-out single, breaking the scoreless tie. It was the White Sox first run against Royals' starters during the series after 19 scoreless innings.

In the eighth, Hunter Renfroe’s single scored Bobby Witt Jr. to break a 1-1 tie as the Royals collected five hits, scoring three runs against reliever John Brebbia (0-5).

Witt had three hits in all three games of the series as the Royals completed their sixth series sweep.

Kansas City tied the game with one out in the seventh. Maikel Garcia reached on an infield hit against reliever Justin Anderson, went to third on Dairon Blanco’s hit and scored on Kyle Isbel’s squeeze bunt.

Chicago’s bullpen leads the majors with 24 blown saves and 33 losses.

Drew Thorpe allowed three singles over six shutout innings, walking two and hitting a batter but stranded five baserunners while striking out five in his fifth consecutive start of at least six innings while allowing fewer than three runs.

innings and cruised to a 15-0 win over the Denver Cougars in seven innings Saturday

The win gives the Larks the series sweep and moved them into
a tie atop the Rocky Mountain Baseball League with the Liberal Bee Jays.

Will Carpenter got the scoring started first for the Larks
with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first. Thomas Lyssy followed with an
RBI double and then after a run scored on a passed ball Trent Baker tripled
home a run making it 4-0 Hays.

They added one more on a wild pitch and led 5-0 through one inning.

In the bottom of the second, Wilbert Espinal got the scoring
started with a sacrifice fly. Hays added two more on an error and led 8-0 at
that point.

Lyssy singled home a run and Baker tripled in another run,
his second triple of the game, for a 10-0 Hays lead.

Gage Gilchrist made it 11-0 hays in the bottom of the third
with an RBI single and then in the bottom of the sixth Hays scored four more
times on their way to the 15-0 run-rule victory.

Lyssy hit a two-run homerun, Kaleb Duncan singled in a run
and Espinal added another on an RBI double.

Kaiden Ashton finished two-for-four with three runs scored
and Baker and Lyssy each collected three hits. Lyssy drove in four runs.

Hays’ Kevin Goss earned the win. He allowed just one hit

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brady Singer threw seven shutout innings to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 6-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night.

Singer faced the minimum through three before running into fourth-inning trouble, walking two to load the bases. He escaped with a strikeout and retired 10 of the final 13 hitters.

Singer (6-6) allowed five singles with two walks and seven strikeouts to earn his second win in his last 10 starts.

The Royals built a 3-0 lead in the first inning with five straight hits, highlighted by Michael Massey’s RBI triple. Maikel Garcia and Bobby Witt Jr. doubled in the second, adding another run.

Jonathan Cannon (1-4) held Kansas City to one single thereafter, finishing six innings while allowing four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.

Witt drove Chris Flexen’s inside fastball above the left field bullpen for his 17th homer in the first inning. Witt added an RBI in the third on the second of his three hits for a 2-0 lead.

Since June 24, Witt has hit safely in 17 of 19 games, batting .403 with 12 extra-base hits.

Wacha (7-6) allowed four hits and a walk, striking out seven. He is 6-2 in his last 10 starts, surrendering no more than three earned runs in each.

Michael Massey’s two-out, two-run single highlighted the Royals’ five-run fifth. Kansas City has won five of its last seven.

⚾ Witt's 17th home run lifts the Royals over the White Sox

The official start to Chiefs Training Camp is just around the corner as rookies and quarterbacks wrapped up their final practice today at Missouri Western State University.

Chiefs President Mark Donovan says it's exciting to be back in St. Joseph and on the Missouri Western campus for another year of camp.

"There's a lot of excitement within our organization, there's a lot of excitement around the team, the players, the coach's, etc., they're excited to be back," Donovan tells reporters. "And they're excited to be back in St. Joe who just treat us so well every single year, there's a reason we keep coming back."

As Chiefs Training Camp begins a looming question is will the reigning Super Bowl champions return to St. Joseph next year.

This is the last guaranteed year Missouri Western is under contract to host the Chiefs for training camp.

When asked if the Chiefs would like to return, Donovan counters with the question why wouldn't they?

"It's been a great partnership, it's been something that as I said we're proud to have been here 14 of the last 15 years, we expect that to continue," Donovan says. "We'll do what we always do, and it's a great relationship, because we will get through this camp (and) at the end of camp we'll sit down and talk about what went well, where are the challenges, what was better this year than last year, what was worse than last year, what can we do to improve?"

As for this year's camp, the first practice open to the public is on Sunday at 9:15. There will be a $5 admission fee and tickets must be acquired online.

Final practice for rookies and quarterbacks provides extra opportunity

Ahead of the official start to Chiefs Training Camp at Missouri Western rookies and quarterbacks had one final practice before the full team reports to campus.

Several veterans, including Patrick Mahomes and Carson Wentz, sat out today to give younger players valuable reps.

Quarterback Chris Oladokuen says while getting extra reps is great, everyone is critical.

"It's good to see live color and then go in there and get in the classroom and see and make those corrections," Oladokun tells reporters following practice. "It's really important for me especially, when Pat and Carson come back those reps get pretty short, so every rep is critical for me."

"Abner was one of the first great stars of the Dallas Texans and the American Football League. In the league's first season in 1960, Abner earned Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year honors, and more importantly, he earned the respect and admiration of his teammates and fans alike. In addition to his on-the-field prowess, Abner was a man of courage and leadership from a very young age. He remained involved in the community well after his playing days were over, and his legacy extends far beyond the gridiron. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Guadalupe and his entire family during this difficult time."

An original Dallas Texan with the team beginning in the inaugural 1960 season, Haynes was an exciting running back and return specialist who owns or shares a number of franchise records, including most touchdowns in a rookie season (12), most points by a non-kicker in a rookie season (72), most points in a game (30), most touchdowns in a game (five) and most rushing touchdowns in a game (four).

With the club across 70 regular season games from 1960-64, he ranks sixth in team history with 8,473 career combined net yards and led the club in rushing four of his five seasons with the team (1960, 1961, 1962 and 1964). He became the franchise's first 1,000-yard rusher, accumulating 1,049 yards during the club's 1962 AFL Championship season. With the Texans/Chiefs, he totaled 793 rushes for 3,810 yards with 39 rushing touchdowns and added 199 receptions for 2,739 yards with 17 touchdowns. As a returner, he tallied 52 kickoff returns for 1,326 yards with one touchdown and 55 punt returns for 598 yards.

Under the guidance of PFHOF Head Coach Hank Stram, Haynes was named to the All-AFL squad in three consecutive seasons from 1960-62 and earned the American Football League's first Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors in 1960 when he led the league with 875 rushing yards. Following his five-year stay with the Texans/Chiefs, he went on to play with the Denver Broncos, New York Jets and Miami Dolphins.

The Denton, Texas, native attended North Texas State College (now the University of North Texas) where he was a college standout, earning All-Missouri Valley Conference honors twice and was named an All-American by&nbsp;Time&nbsp;magazine as a senior in 1959. In 1956, Haynes and teammate Leon King became the first Black student athletes to play on an integrated college football team in Texas, or anywhere in the South, when they joined the North Texas freshman team. Haynes was passionate about providing access to football for youth and was involved with Heroes of Football, an organization that worked to share stories of the players who shaped professional football as well as connect them to their communities. Haynes was inducted into the North Texas Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986 and was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in 1991.

With the Texans/Chiefs, he totaled 793 rushes for 3,810 yards with 39 rushing touchdowns and added 199 receptions for 2,739 yards with 17 touchdowns. As a returner, he tallied 52 kickoff returns for 1,326 yards with one touchdown and 55 punt returns for 598 yards.Under the guidance of PFHOF Head Coach Hank Stram, Haynes was named to the All-AFL squad in three consecutive seasons from 1960-62 and earned the American Football League's first Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors in 1960 when he led the league with 875 rushing yards. Following his five-year stay with the Texans/Chiefs, he went on to play with the Denver Broncos, New York Jets and Miami Dolphins.The Denton, Texas, native attended North Texas State College (now the University of North Texas) where he was a college standout, earning All-Missouri Valley Conference honors twice and was named an All-American by&nbsp;Time&nbsp;magazine as a senior in 1959. In 1956, Haynes and teammate Leon King became the first Black student athletes to play on an integrated college football team in Texas, or anywhere in the South, when they joined the North Texas freshman team. Haynes was passionate about providing access to football for youth and was involved with Heroes of Football, an organization that worked to share stories of the players who shaped professional football as well as connect them to their communities. Haynes was inducted into the North Texas Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986 and was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in 1991.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Early practices in Chiefs training camp on the Missouri Western campus have been key for one rookie running back, transitioning to a new sport.

Louis Rees-Zammit is a former union rugby player from Wales that has long dreamed of playing in the NFL and is getting his chance with the Chiefs.

Rees-Zammit says a key for him right now is getting to know the playbook.

"Cause I'm playing catchup with a lot of people that have played American football since they were little kids, six years old, so there's no time to rest for me," Rees-Zammit tells the media following practice. "I've got to give this my all because ultimately this is my dream and to make it come true then I've got to play, I've got to be a step ahead of a lot of people."

Rees-Zammit says the first goal to consider his rookie campaign successful is to make the team and knows a big part of that will be contributing on special teams.

"Been working really hard on that with Coach (Dave) Toub and Coach (Andy) Hill, and just learning the playbook as I said," Rees-Zammit says. "Learning the running back roles, being able to learn pass protection, and then learning my routes off that, I think all of that adds up and the main way I'm going to make this team is by learning pass protection and being able to be a key role on special teams."

Entering a packed tight end room, the Chiefs fourth round pick has one goal in mind during his first Chiefs Training Camp.

Jared Wiley from TCU says his biggest goal this training camp is just to prove he can contribute

"I know what's in our room, we've got me, Irv (Smith Jr.), Noah (Gray), Gerrit (Prince), obviously Trav, we have a really talented group," Wiley explains. "So if I can find a way to come in and contribute as much as I possibly can, whether it's on special teams, anything they want me to do on offense, that'd be my biggest goal just to prove that i belong in that room and to be able to be on the field with those guys."

One more practice will be held for rookies and quarterbacks tomorrow. The full team reports to St. Joseph tomorrow evening, before the first full practice open to the public on Sunday where there will be a $5 admission fee.
