HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State Tigers faced off against the No. 24 ranked Northeastern State RiverHawks on Thursday night (Oct. 26) at FHSU Soccer Stadium. The Tigers now are 7-6-3 overall and 6-2-2 in the GAC, standing firm in second place in the conference standings after a 2-0 win. The RiverHawks moved to 6-5-3 overall and 4-4-1 in conference.

The first half of the game saw the Tigers dominate with two beautifully executed goals. In the 21st minute, Blake Arndt&nbsp;found the back of the net with a header in the box on well-timed assisting passes from Mika Leue&nbsp;and Inigo Jimenez. The Tigers continued to press forward and in the 36th minute, Elias Ovelar Semeniuk&nbsp;scored, thanks to an assist from Pablo Orozco.

The second half began with the RiverHawks determined to turn the tide. They launched a relentless attack, pushing hard to get on the scoreboard. The Tiger defense, led by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/ben-dixon/7307">Ben Dixon</a>&nbsp;in goal, held firm. Dixon made crucial saves to maintain the lead and deny the RiverHawks any scoring opportunities.

The Tigers look to carry the momentum from this victory into next Thursday when they face conference-leading Southern Nazarene at home for Senior Night at 6 p.m..&nbsp;&nbsp;

⚽ Tiger men score two first half goals and hold off No. 24 RiverHawks

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team clinched its second-consecutive victory Thursday evening (Oct. 26) with a three-set sweep of the Newman Jets, 25-21, 25-21, 26-24. The win helped Fort Hays State (11-14, 5-11 MIAA) secure a winning record at home this season, with the Tigers finishing the year 8-7 inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The Tigers never trailed in the opening set, with the home team scoring the first eight points of the night thanks to two kills from Gracie Rains, one kill from Ashlyn Reeves&nbsp;and Claire Olson&nbsp;and two combo blocks from Reeves and Olson and then Reeves and Rains. Newman closed within two points on three different occasions, but Fort Hays State had an answer each time.

The second set was closer, featuring eight ties and three lead changes. FHSU trailed by six early before scoring six in a row to tie things up at nine. The Tigers took their first lead of the set at 17-16 after three-consecutive points, including back-to-back kills from Mya Vandrovec. Newman bounced back to lead 20-19 before the Tigers scored six of the final seven points to clinch the frame, 25-21, on a Riley Tinder&nbsp;service ace.

Newman led by four early in the third set, the largest lead of the frame for either team, before Fort Hays State bounced back to keep things close the rest of the way. The lead changed hands five times the rest of the way, including one final time late in the match when the Tigers made one last push. Trailing 24-22, FHSU scored the final four points to fend off a pair of set point opportunities and complete the sweep, 26-24. Olson kept the Tigers alive with her team-leading ninth kill of the evening before a pair of Jet errors gave the home team a chance at set point.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/brooke-hyland/7498">Brooke Hyland</a>&nbsp;sealed the deal with her third service ace of the match.

The Jets held a slim edge in attack percentage, .107 (37-24-121) to .106 (33-22-104), but Newman fell behind due to 12 service errors. Reeves compiled four blocks on the night, including one solo block. Seniors Emily Ellis and Riley Tinder&nbsp;combined for seven kills and 14 digs in their final home match in the Black and Gold.

Fort Hays State will wrap up the regular season with four matches on the road over the next two weeks, beginning with a trip to St. Joseph, Mo. to take on Missouri Western next Friday (Nov. 3, 6 p.m.). The Tigers currently sit in a tie for seventh in the win column in the MIAA standings, with the top eight teams at the conclusion of the season securing a trip to the MIAA Championship Tournament November 16-18.&nbsp;&nbsp;

INDIANAPOLIS – Fort Hays State Women's Soccer is among the 10 teams listed in the first set of NCAA Regional Rankings released on Wednesday. For the first release of region rankings, the NCAA lists its top 10 teams currently being considered for selection to the NCAA Tournament by region alphabetically. The list of 10 teams can change week-to-week as future results affect the formulas for consideration. Rankings will be assigned to the teams in the second and third editions in the weeks ahead.

Fort Hays State is in good shape at this point, sitting at 10-2-3 overall. The FHSU win over Southwestern College is removed from its record for region ranking purposes since results against NAIA or other NCAA level teams are not figured into the formula.

According to the report for the Central Region located at the bottom of the region rankings page on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/soccer-women/d2/regional-rankings">NCAA.com</a>, Fort Hays State has the fifth-best In-Region RPI and sixth-best Division II Performance Indicator value in the Central Region. St. Cloud State owns the highest In-Region RPI and second-best Performance Indicator value, while Washburn owns the highest Performance Indicator value and second-best In-Region RPI. Fort Hays State is seeking back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history, with previous appearances in 2012, 2016, and 2022.

Eight teams from the Central Region will be selected to compete in the Central Regional of the NCAA Tournament following the conclusion of conference tournaments. The region consists of teams from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, and Great American Conference. Champions from each of the three conference tournaments within the region will receive automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.

The MIAA and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) each have five teams listed in the first release. Though the Great American Conference (GAC) does not have a school in the list of 10 right now, one of its members will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by virtue of winning their conference tournament. Fort Hays State is 2-2-2 against the teams currently listed among the 10 under consideration.

Region rankings released by United Soccer Coaches on a weekly basis up to this point have no bearing on NCAA Region Rankings. The NCAA Region Rankings are the only set of rankings used for national tournament consideration.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs' Nick Bolton had surgery in Los Angeles on his fractured wrist this week, though coach Andy Reid said Wednesday he was not sure whether the linebacker would land on injured reserve or how long he might be out.

Reid said there was no need during the procedure Tuesday for metal to be put into the wrist to support it, and that could help Bolton return to the field quicker. He already has missed three games this season because of an ankle injury.

“That was a positive going forward with him,” Reid said. “We just have to kind of check and see going forward.”

Bolton, a second-round pick in the 2021 draft, has become one of the league's best playmaking linebackers. He made 180 tackles with two sacks and had two interceptions last season.

He was hurt while making a tackle during&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chargers-chiefs-kansas-city-los-angeles-nfl-9de04ec31e8987fdb2d0522ae158d8cc">the Chiefs' 31-17 win over the Chargers</a>&nbsp;on Sunday.

The Chiefs signed former Chargers linebacker Drue Tranquill almost as an afterthought in free agency, but he has already proven to be indispensable. Tranquill got most of snaps during the three weeks Bolton was out with his ankle injury, and his intelligence and experience coupled with his natural athleticism have allowed him to take over as the quarterback of the defense.

Tranquill, who had 146 tackles for the Chargers last season, has 36 through the first seven weeks with Kansas City. He also has a sack in each of the past two games, including one against the Broncos — whom the Chiefs visit this Sunday.

“Drue has done a heck of a job coming in for Nick,” Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said. “Nick, he's been very vocal. He took that leadership role of getting everyone lined up. I think he's done a tremendous job in the amount of time he's had."

What also should help the Chiefs defense absorb the loss of Bolton is the return of pass rusher Charles Omenihu from his six-game suspension last week against Los Angeles. Omenihu had a sack and a pass deflection that led to an interception, and his ability to provide pressure off the edge allows Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to have more flexibility.

“I think our best game is ahead of us,” Jones said. “We're building chemistry across the defensive line, and having Charles in there, everyone being able to move around, I think it's a plus for our D-line.”

In other news, Reid said Justyn Ross would practice one day after t&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-kansas-city-b711a317e3879288844749ba38d9c253">he 23-year-old wide receiver was charged</a>&nbsp;with misdemeanor domestic battery and criminal damage to property and released after posting $2,500 bond.

Ross, who is due again in court on Dec. 4., has been a bit player for the defending Super Bowl champions this season. He has been active in their first seven games but has just three catches for 34 yards on the season.

“All situations are different, obviously,” Reid said. “The law enforcement part of it, you listen to what the real details went on, and then you keep open communication ” among general manager Brett Veach and other law enforcement officials.

“Other than that,” Reid said, “I really don't have any information for you other than what we have gathered.”

NOTES: WR Justin Watson returned to practice Wednesday. He hurt his elbow during the Chiefs' win over the Broncos in Week 6, and while the injury at first appeared to be significant, Watson could be back soon. He has 10 catches for 219 yards this season. ... QB Patrick Mahomes has said that he enjoys playing in the snow, and that could bode well for the Chiefs with a chance of it on Sunday in Denver. “I grew up in Texas. I only saw snow like, twice growing up,” Mahomes said. “I got accustomed to it in KC. I thought snow would be like rain where it gets a little slippery, where the snow actually makes it a little sticky. But at the end of the day, you just have to go out there and throw it and see what happens.”

(AP) — The Chiefs' Nick Bolton had surgery in Los Angeles on his fractured wrist this week, though coach Andy Reid said Wednesday he was not sure whether the linebacker would land on injured reserve or how long he might be out.Reid said there was no need during the procedure Tuesday for metal to be put into the wrist to support it, and that could help Bolton return to the field quicker. HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Volleyball ended a long losing streak on their home floor to Washburn on Tuesday night&nbsp; with a four-set victory. It was the first win over the Ichabods in Hays since 2004, snapping a 16-match skid to the Ichabods in Hays. It also snapped a 14-game losing skid to the Ichabods overall, which dated back to the 2015 season when FHSU won in Topeka.

Fort Hays State took the opening set by a score of 25-19, only to see No. 25 ranked Washburn bounce back to tie the match with a 25-17 result in set two. The Tigers took the pivotal third set, 25-23, by rallying for the final two points of the set to break a 23-23 stalemate. They went on to seal the deal in the fourth set, winning 25-22.

The win snapped a 47-match losing skid to AVCA Top 25 ranked opponents for FHSU, which dated back to 2016 when the Tigers knocked off a No. 21 ranked Northwest Missouri State team in Maryville on November 5. FHSU also defeated a No. 6 ranked Central Missouri team earlier that 2016 season on September 30, which was its last win over a Top 25-ranked team in Hays.

The Tigers were able to limit the Ichabods to just an .024 hitting percentage in the first set, forcing 10 attack errors. Half of those hitting errors came in the form of five Tiger blocks in the set, headed by Ashlyn Reeves&nbsp;with three as she sealed the set with a solo block.

The Washburn attack quickly heated in the second set, hitting .333 as a team with 13 kills to just two errors. FHSU had its best attacking set of the night (.211), but it was not enough to offset a strong set from a WU team that also put down five service aces in the set.

The Tigers regrouped and battled through a close third set. Neither team led by more than two until FHSU used a 4-0 burst to take an 18-14 lead. Washburn fought back to eventually draw even with FHSU at 22-22 and the teams traded another pair of points to reach 23-23. Washburn helped FHSU's cause with a service error, then Reeves was big on the block again sealing the third set by creating a wall with Riley Tinder&nbsp;to give FHSU a 2-1 lead in the match. FHSU benefitted from nine attack and six service errors by WU in the set. The Tigers needed only 10 kills in the set to offset the 15 Ichabod errors, led by Gracie Rains&nbsp;with four in the frame. Washburn held a slight attacking edge in the set, .152 to .143.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the second straight week, Fort Hays State Women's Soccer is among the list of teams receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll, released on Tuesday. FHSU enters the final week of the regular season with an overall record of 11-2-3.

FHSU will take on its second-straight nationally ranked opponent when its hosts Washburn on Friday night in Hays. The Ichabods are up to No. 6 in the latest poll, currently at 14-1-1 overall on the season. FHSU and Washburn met earlier this season in a non-conference match in Topeka, which went the way of Washburn by a score of 2-1. The Ichabods were not ranked yet when that contest happened on September 22. FHSU looks to extend its win streak against WU in Hays, which currently sits at four-straight matches going back to 2018.

This week will prove to be an exciting chase for the MIAA regular season title. Fort Hays State and No. 15 ranked Central Missouri are tied for second place in the MIAA standings, only a game back of Washburn. Washburn is 8-0-1 in MIAA play, while FHSU and UCM are both 7-1-1. The Tigers are looking to pull back even with Washburn for first place in the standings after keeping pace at the top the past two weeks. After the contest with Washburn on Friday, FHSU finishes the regular season and conference slate at Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday.

The Tigers have already clinched a berth to the MIAA Tournament and a home match in the quarterfinals on Friday, November 3, but have their sites on a potential conference title this week.

Fort Hays State ranked as high as No. 22 in the Top 25 Poll last year. This is the third straight season the FHSU women have at least received votes in the national poll.

DENVER (AP) — Denver Broncos safety Kareem Jackson's four-game suspension for illegal hits was reduced on appeal to two games Tuesday.

Derrick Brooks cut the suspension in half after hearing Jackson's appeal. Under the collective bargaining agreement, Brooks and James Thrash — both former players — are the two hearing officers jointly appointed and compensated by the NFL and NFL Players Association to rule on appeals of on-field discipline.

Jackson will miss a home game against Kansas City and a game at Buffalo surrounding the Broncos’ bye week. He will be eligible to return to the team on Nov. 14. Under the initial suspension, he also would have missed games against Minnesota and Cleveland next month.

Jackson will forfeit about $279,000 in salary instead of the $589,000 he would have lost had the four-game suspension been upheld.

Jackson was flagged for unnecessary roughness and ejected for&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFLRT/status/1716225076763431390?s=20">a high hit to backpedaling Green Bay Packers tight end Luke Musgrave</a>&nbsp;in the fourth quarter of Denver’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/packers-broncos-1bca189ba76cbfc78f60a2d5ef082e7b">19-17 victory</a>&nbsp;last weekend.

His second ejection of the season came just 24 hours after the league announced he had been fined $43,709 for an unflagged hit on Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco in Week 6, his fourth fine for over-the-top tackles this season.

Those fines total $89,670, and Jackson faces another hefty fine for his hit on Musgrave.

Jon Runyan, the NFL’s vice president of football operations, noted Jackson’s multiple offenses for personal fouls for violating player safety-related rules when issuing the original suspension.

Jackson also was ejected from Denver’s loss to Washington in Week 2 after he was flagged for an illegal hit on Commanders tight end Logan Thomas. That came a week after Jackson’s illegal hit on Raiders receiver Jakobi Meyers. Both Thomas and Meyers were concussed on the plays.

Jackson signed a one-year, $2.515 million contract with the Broncos last spring to return for a 14th NFL season. He lost his starting job to Caden Sterns in training camp but returned to the starting lineup when Sterns suffered a knee injury on his second snap in the opener.

Jackson was replaced Sunday by PJ Locke, who sealed Denver's win with his first career interception in the closing minutes.

Coach Sean Payton said Monday he's certain Jackson will lower his target zone and stop committing fouls that are injuring opponents and hurting the Broncos (2-5).

“I know he’ll keep working on it,” Payton said. "He’s someone that’s smart and really wants to do the right thing.”

TULSA, Okla. – The Fort Hays State men's golf team wrapped up their fall season with a twelfth place finish on Tuesday at the Tulsa Club hosted by Rogers State. The tournament was played at The Club at Indian Springs which totaled 6,897 yards and was a par-72 course.

Fort Hays State as a team shot two sub-300 rounds with a 296 in round one and a 299 in the final round. The Tigers finished 33-over par with a total of 897 shots. Fort Hays State was able to climb one spot on the leaderboard in the final round and placed fifth out of MIAA teams.

The Tigers were led by Cooper Scheck&nbsp;and Jackson Rader&nbsp;who both turned in top-20 performances by tying for 16th&nbsp;place. Rader and Scheck were two of five players in the field that finished with a 219, 3-over par. Scheck entered round two at 2-over par and put himself in a great spot with five birdies in the second round but was plagued by a triple bogey on his final hole of the round. Scheck bounced back with a 73 on his third round. Rader Shot his best round in round two with a 1-under, 71. Rader carded at least three birdies in each of the three rounds. There were only four MIAA golfers that placed higher than Scheck and Rader.

Cole Streck&nbsp;tied for 54th&nbsp;place after shooting a 13-over par on the tournament. Streck climb eight spots on the leaderboard during the final round and finished things off the right way with a birdie on his last hole. Streck had round scores of 76, 78, and 75. Tanner Copeland&nbsp;finished just a few spots behind Streck, tying for 57th&nbsp;place. Copeland got off to a great start with a 73 in round one. He finished the tournament with and 81 and 76 in the last two rounds.

George recorded four birdies through his three rounds. &nbsp;Bryson Oots of William Jewell College took home the individual title after shooting an 8-under par, three strokes ahead of the next spot on the leaderboard. Oots raced out to a great start on the tournament with a 66 to start the competition. Southern Arkansas clinched the team title after three of their five players finished in the top 10. They finished at 2-over par as a team.

Collectively, Fort Hays State University concluded the tournament with a total stroke count of 1020, securing the 18th position overall. Over the course of the tournament, the Tigers notched an impressive 14 birdies and 82 pars.

The standout performance of the event was delivered by Morgan Brasser, who tied for 8th place within the 102-player field in Tulsa. Brasser showed her exceptional finishing skills, going 8-over par while accumulating 31 pars and 9 birdies throughout the week. She displayed remarkable consistency, firing rounds of 76, 75, and 73. Brasser's tenacity was evident as she climbed the leaderboard from an initial 15th place tie.

Corbyn Marquess&nbsp;showcased unwavering consistency as well, contributing scores of 85, 81, and 85, alongside 23 pars and two birdies. She concluded the tournament in a tie for the 78th position. Shauna Lee&nbsp;provided essential support with rounds of 90, 85, and 90, securing a 96th overall position. Lee's performance yielded 11 pars and a birdie. Ovelar Semeniuk was named Offensive Player of the Week, while Dixon was named Goalkeeper of the Week, helping the Tigers to wins in Hays over Ouachita Baptist and Harding.

Ovelar Semeniuk put together a 9-point week with four goals and an assist. He had a pair of goals in each match this past week for FHSU, helping the Tigers to a 6-0 win over Ouachita Baptist with the first and fourth goals of the match. He then scored the second and third goals of the 4-1 win over Harding. He added his lone assist for the week in the 6-0 win against Ouachita Baptist, helping Blake Arndt&nbsp;record his first career hat trick who went on to finish the week with 8 points individually (3 goals, 2 assists).

Dixon yielded only one goal for the week, playing all 180 minutes against Ouachita Baptist and Harding. DENVER (AP) — The NFL on Monday suspended Denver Broncos safety Kareem Jackson for four games without pay following his latest illegal hit to the head that resulted in his second ejection of the season.

Jackson, who faces about $589,000 in lost wages, was flagged for unnecessary roughness and ejected for&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFLRT/status/1716225076763431390?s=20">a high hit to Green Bay Packers tight end Luke Musgrave</a>&nbsp;in the fourth quarter of Denver’s 19-17 victory Sunday.

That came just 24 hours after the league announced Jackson had been fined $43,709 for an unflagged hit on Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco in Denver's Week 6 loss at Kansas City.

That brought his season total to $89,670 in fines and he's facing yet another one for his hit on Musgrave.

Jackson was fined in each of the first three games of the season for unnecessary roughness for a total of $45,961.

Jon Runyan, the NFL’s vice president of football operations, issued the suspension Monday for violations of the league’s unnecessary roughness rules.

In a letter to Jackson, Runyan wrote, “you delivered a forceful blow to the head/neck area of a defenseless receiver, when you had the time and space to avoid such contact. You could have made contact with your opponent within the rules, yet you chose not to.”

Runyan noted Jackson’s multiple offenses for personal fouls this season for violating player safety-related rules.

Jackson also was ejected from Denver's 35-33 loss to Washington in Week 2 after he was flagged for an illegal hit on Commanders tight end Logan Thomas, which came a week after Jackson's illegal hit on Raiders receiver Jakobi Meyers. Both Meyers and Thomas were concussed on the plays.

Jackson, who signed a one-year, $2.515 million contract with the Broncos last spring to return for a 14th NFL season, lost his starting job to Caden Sterns in training camp. But Sterns suffered a knee injury on his second snap in the opener, and Jackson returned to the starting lineup.

PJ Locke, who replaced Jackson following the safety's disqualification, secured Denver's win over the Packers with a late interception, the first of his career.

Jackson will miss games against Kansas City, Buffalo, Minnesota and Cleveland before he's allowed to return to the team on Nov. 27 ahead of the Broncos' Week 13 game at Houston.

Before the suspension was announced, Broncos coach Sean Payton reiterated that he didn't believe Jackson was playing dirty or trying to hurt opponents.

He said he's sat on the NFL's competition committee for a number of years and "we're constantly trying to work with and educate the players. There are times when pad levels drop. I know Kareem, I know his heart and I know the way he’s played. I think it’s an easy narrative to say, ‘Well he’s just an old-timer playing in a new-timer’s game.’

“When you see the play, his head is removed from the forceable contact. Defenseless is a little bit more of an issue relative to the position the receiver’s in,” Payton added.

“I just know where he’s at as a player. We’ll keep working on that. I know he’ll keep working on it. He’s someone that’s smart and really wants to do the right thing.”

The Broncos (2-5) host the Chiefs (6-1) Sunday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — This season of the Kansas City Chiefs might someday be remembered for two distinct eras: pre-Taylor and post-Taylor.

Whether coincidence or fate or a function of true love, the Chiefs tight end has been on a tear since his overtures toward pop superstar Taylor Swift resulted in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-kansas-city-kelce-e97f370dc8931de37cc0875dd53cf46d">a newfound relationship</a>. Kelce was out with a hyperextended knee in Week 1, when the Chiefs lost to the Lions, and had four catches for 26 yards in his return against the Jaguars. But in the six games since Swift first watched Kelce play, he's caught 48 passes for 499 yards and four touchdowns.

That includes a 12-catch performance for 179 yards and a score in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chargers-chiefs-kansas-city-los-angeles-nfl-9de04ec31e8987fdb2d0522ae158d8cc">a 31-17 win over the Chargers</a>&nbsp;on Sunday, when Swift was back in an Arrowhead Stadium suite and chest-bumping Brittany Mahomes, wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

In the four games Swift has attended, Kelce has averaged 108 yards receiving. He averaged 46.5 in the two games she did not.

That led Chiefs coach Andy Reid to say: “Taylor can stay around as long as she want.”

He wasn't joking, either. She might be Kelce's good-luck charm.

Or maybe he's just defying logic by getting better with age.

Even though he turned 34 earlier this month, the same age as retired tight end Rob Gronkowski, Kelce continues to make plays that leave everyone wondering just how he did that. Take his game against the Chargers, a division rival that has seen him plenty of times yet was powerless to prevent him from finding open nooks and crannies in their defense.

In one case, Kelce found a yawning chasm and ran 54 yards before he was finally brought down by the Chargers.

“The younger Trav would have scored on that one,” Mahomes said with a smile, “I'll say that.”

He might not have been that open, though. Mahomes said the biggest difference in the 34-year-old Kelce from the one who broke into the league a decade ago is his ability to diagnose what the defense is doing, then quickly find a way to counteract it.

“He's played every single team and every single coverage,” Mahomes said, “and knows every way to make them pay.”

That much is true regardless of whether Swift is in the house.

The Chiefs&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/los-angeles-chargers-chiefs-nfl-herbert-48b3f6993df37cc4ef89e9f2687e58e2">sacked Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert five times</a>&nbsp;on Sunday, and each came from a different player — and none from Chris Jones, whose streak of eight straight regular-season games with a sack came to an end. That production from across the board is a good sign for the Chiefs' pass rush, which has been relying heavily on their All-Pro defensive tackle for years.

“All of us are versatile, we’re all playing inside or out. Getting us all on the field is huge — every single one of us can rush,” said Mike Danna, who had one of the sacks Sunday. "Keep on stacking the reps and getting better with the guys.”

The Chiefs were penalized six times for 43 yards, but a few of them were particularly painful. One was a questionable block in the back on left guard Joe Thuney well downfield that took away Jerick McKinnon's 48-yard touchdown reception; the Chiefs wound up getting a field goal on the drive instead.

Second-round draft pick Rashee Rice is quickly developing into an impact wide receiver. He had five catches for 60 yards and a score against Los Angeles, and he's had at least four catches in each of his last three games.

“He’s doing a really good job of just doing what he’s supposed to do and making the plays that he’s supposed to make, not trying to be anything that he’s not,” wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling said. “You see a lot of rookies come in and try to do too much and can’t figure out the right thing to do and the wrong thing to do. He’s just been doing his job and it’s been paying off for him. He’s a quiet kid who listens to what he’s told to do. He always wants to learn. He’s always taking notes, and it shows.”

Former first-round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire's time in Kansas City is coming to a lackluster end. He had just two carries for five yards against the Chargers and has 32 for 105 yards through seven games in the final season of his rookie contract.

Playmaking linebacker Nick Bolton fractured his wrist while tackling the Chargers' Keenan Allen. Bolton was only in his second game back after missing the previous three with an ankle injury.

29 and 3 — Mahomes has 29 wins and three losses in his career against the AFC West. And with the victory over the Chargers, the Chiefs have a three-game lead in the division just seven weeks into the season.

The Chiefs can do more damage in the AFC West race when they visit the Broncos on Sunday. The two will be playing for the second time in three weeks after Kansas City scraped its way to a 19-8 win on Oct. 12 at Arrowhead Stadium.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw for 424 yards and four touchdowns, Travis Kelce caught 12 passes for 179 yards and a score, and the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Los Angeles Chargers 31-17 on Sunday to take command of the AFC West.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling had three catches for 84 yards and a touchdown, Rashee Rice and Isiah Pacheco also caught TD passes, and the Chiefs (6-1) won their sixth straight to take a three-game lead in a division they have won seven straight years.

The Chiefs were leading 24-17 midway through the fourth quarter when Mecole Hardman, who returned to Kansas City this week in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-kansas-city-hardman-42f4f30cc2f8e73026636f408eabc3ed">a trade with the New York Jets</a>, brought back a punt 50 yards. That gave Kansas City a short field and, six plays later, Mahomes hit Pacheco out of the backfield for the touchdown that put the game away.

The Chargers' Justin Herbert, who spent the day under constant pressure from the league's No. 2 scoring defense, had 259 yards passing with a touchdown and two interceptions. Joshua Palmer caught five passes for 133 yards and Joshua Kelley ran seven times for 75 yards and a score.

The Chiefs had been relying all season on their defense to bail out an offense that had struggled to hit its stride.

Mahomes and Co. finally found it in the first half.

After an opening drive that netted a field goal, the reigning league MVP capped three of the next four drives with TD passes. The first was a 46-yard strike to Valdes-Scantling, the second to Rice, and the final one — almost fittingly — a flip from the 1-yard line to Kelce, who bulldozed through a group of defenders and into the end zone with 15 seconds left in the first half.

That prompted big cheers from the home crowd, including Taylor Swift, who watched from a luxury suite and celebrated with&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1716198134270034307">a personalized handshake with Brittany Mahomes</a>, the QB's wife.

The score left Mahomes with 321 yards passing, the fourth time in his career that he had been over 300 yards before halftime. And it left Kelce with nine catches for 143 yards and a score.

It only left the Chiefs with a 24-17 lead, though, because the Chargers were getting some big plays of their own.

After the Chargers evened the score with a field goal of their own, Kelley got loose for a 49-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. And after Herbert connected with Palmer for 60 yards down the middle of the field, the Los Angeles quarterback found Gerald Everett in the end zone for a touchdown.

Given all the first-half offense, the second half was a dud. Both teams put together long drives in the third quarter, and both of them ended up with turnovers, leaving the Chiefs clinging to their 24-17 lead heading into the fourth.

Swift was again in attendance to watch Kelce and the Chiefs. She was seen wearing a friendship bracelet with “87” on it. Kelce's failed attempt to give her a friendship bracelet during her Eras Tour led to the tight end's courtship of the pop star, and an invitation to a game at Arrowhead Stadium. Swift took him up on it and they have been seeing each other ever since.

Chiefs pass rusher Charles Omenihu, who was suspended the first six games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, made his debut in a big way. He had a sack in the first half and tipped a pass that L'Jarius Sneed picked off in the second.
