Robert Clarence “Bob” Hertel, 80, passed away peacefully April 30, 2024, at Medicalodges of Great Bend, Great Bend. He was born on July 9, 1943, in Hays, to William and Regina (Sander) Hertel.

Robert was a student at St. Rose Catholic School and was in the Great Bend High School graduating Class of 1962. He furthered his education at Fort Hays State University and graduated in 1966, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Arts. He was a member of Prince of Peace at St. Patrick Catholic Church. His military career took him to Germany from 1967 to 1970, where he proudly served during the Vietnam War Era. Robert worked as an Engineer Draftsman for Ruskin Manufacturing in Great Bend and Grandview, Missouri, before retiring in 1990. In his personal time, he enjoyed woodworking, stamp collecting, gardening, and was an electronics enthusiast. During harvest, Robert could be found on the farm assisting with field work, which he loved.

Survivors include sister; Kayleen Kern (Jerry) of Great Bend, brother; Gary Hertel (Diana) of Great Bend, brother; Daryl Hertel of Great Bend, sister; Cheryl Degenhardt (Kenneth) of Garden City. and nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Prakash Kola presiding. Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend, with Military Rites conducted by Ft. Riley Honor Guard. Ned Dee Colburn of Plainville, KS, passed away on April 27, 2024, at the Solomon Valley Manor in Stockton, KS at the age of 92. He was born on September 17, 1931, to Gerald Stanford Joseph Colburn and Marguerite (Hilgers) Colburn in Plainville, KS. He married Michelle Antoine on November 28, 1976.

Ned grew up in Stockton and Plainville and graduated from Stockton High School in 1946. After a couple years of college, he joined the U.S. Air Force. During the spring of 1964 he was transferred to Toul-Rosieres Air Base, Eastern France where he flew the RB 66. In 1968 during the Vietnam war, he was transferred to Tahkli Air Base in Thailand from where he flew 101 missions over Vietnam. He returned to the United States, was stationed in Denver where he trained young airmen. During his military service Ned was deployed to 60 countries, he retired in 1975 as a Lt Colonel. He then started his own construction business and built a 60-apartment complex in Denver. He could build anything, and he loved to fly and write. Ned was a very brilliant man and spoke some Japanese, Arabic, and French. He was a member of the Air Force Association.

Ned is survived by his wife, Michelle of Plainville, a son Michael (Lisa) Colburn of Oregon, Teresa (Arthur) McFarlane of Hawaii, a stepson Pascal Antoine, two sisters Twila McCauley of Buena Vista Park, CA and Margie Beth Schoen of Downs, KS, 7 grand-children and 5 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sons Steven and Christian Colburn, sister, Faythe Dick and brothers-in-law, Doyle McCauley and Robert Schoen.

Ned was a very kind, generous, and loving man who lived to serve his family, friends, and country. For all of us who have the privilege of knowing him, he will always stand as a true hero in our hearts and our lives. He will be remembered in love.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 3, 202, at 2 PM at the funeral home of Plainville. There will be no public visitation.

John Edward Price, age 53, died at his home in Rush Center, Kansas on April 27, 2024. He was born on July 11, 1970, in Fredonia, Kansas, the son of James and Martha (Byington) Price.

John grew up in the Sharon Springs, KS area and was a 1988 graduate of Wallace County High School. He attended Colby Community College and later received his welding certifications from Missouri Welding Institute.

After two “official” dates and a short engagement, John married Gina Evans on April 15, 1995, in Gove, Kansas. Together they raised two boys, owned and operated Smokey Valley Transport, LLC, and just recently celebrated 29 years of marriage. John was a hard worker, he devoted much of his life as a truck driver but also had other passions such as helping others when he served with EMS, police, and fire department divisions. John never was one to take time to relax much but when he did he just wanted to be with his family.

John is survived by his wife, Gina; two sons, Weston Price and wife Kyrstyn, of Claflin, KS, and Cody Price and wife Kaylyn, of Overland Park, KS; one grandson, Nolan; his father James Price and wife Rue, of Susank, KS; one brother James Price, Jr, and wife Tammy, of Hays, KS; one sister, Dana Van Allen of Goodland, KS; mother-in-law, Marjorie Evans of La Crosse, KS, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Price, and father-in-law, Eugene Evans.

A graveside funeral service will be held at the Gove Cemetery, Gove, KS on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. Friends may visit with family at the Gove Community building following the service. The family requests casual attire.

Mary Agnes (Schmoker) Steele, age 92, of Atwood, died Friday April 26, 2024, at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Mary was born May 20, 1931, to Frederick and Hattie (LaRue) Schmoker in Oberlin, Kansas. She attended Oberlin High School and married Bill Steele on August 9, 1949. To this union, nine children were born. Of the nine children, survivors include: Bob, Vicki Rader (Chuck), Peggy Goss (Ken Hiatt), Terry, Kathy Steinke, and Susanne. Preceding Mary in death were her husband Bill, and three children: Judy, Connie, and Patty.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and eight brothers and sisters. She is survived by one brother, Keith Schmoker of Wichita, Kansas.

Her hobbies included creating porcelain dolls and later switched to her passion of quilting. She loved her family, including a large number of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Her dog and granddogs were a big part of her life.

Mary worked as a cook at the High School, as well as other duties at the Good Samaritan Center, and the Rawlins County Hospital. She and Bill also owned and operated the Atwood bowling alley.

Visitation will be from 2:00 to 2:30 p.m., with the funeral service starting at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at the United Methodist Church in Atwood, Kansas. Interment will follow in the Atwood Fairview Cemetery. Theresa Rose (Leitner) Chvatal, age 87, passed away peacefully at Rawlins County Health Center on April 27, 2024, surrounded by her family.

Theresa was born on March 2, 1937, in Herndon, Kansas, to Joseph S. Leitner and Barbara (Kleidosty) Leitner. Theresa was the second of four children. She attended school at a Bolde country school through 3rd grade, St. Mary’s Catholic School and Herndon High School in Herndon, graduating in 1955. Theresa moved to Atwood after graduating, living with her sister, working for Forrest Brown during tax season and at Bellamy drug store, where she met Frank A. Chvatal. They were united into marriage on April 11, 1959, and just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. To this union were born four children, Scott, Karen, Mike and Mitch. Frankie and Theresa made their home in Atwood and were business owners of Beaver Valley Supply Company.

Theresa devoted her life to her family. Frankie traveled a lot for business, and she was busy managing their household and raising their children. Theresa was a top-notch cook and she enjoyed gardening with her family, canning and cooking the produce they grew. Theresa was a longtime member of Town and Country Guild, was a great card player and was in many card clubs, with bridge being her favorite. She was an avid golfer and loved teaching her kids and grandkids the sport. Theresa’s faith was extremely important to her and she was a member of Sacred Heart Church and the Altar Society.

Theresa enjoyed watching sports, and once her kids and grandchildren came along, she especially enjoyed going to their sporting events and other activities.

Theresa loved traveling with family and friends, enjoying business conventions and annual trips to their home in Palm Springs, California with her sister, brothers, children and grandchildren.

Theresa was preceded in death by her parents, sister Eunice Riepl Braxmeyer and brother Roy Leitner. She is survived by her husband Frankie of 65 years; four children, Scott Chvatal, Karen (Greg) Leibbrandt, Mike Chvatal, and Mitch (Angela) Chvatal; 9 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; brother Wayne (Cathy) Leitner; several nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Catholic Rosary will be Wednesday May 1, 2024, at 9:30am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Atwood, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Atwood. Bernice Coleen Timmons was born in Smith Center, KS on July 20, 1932 to Jess and Arminta (Cronn) Timmons. She passed from this earth on April 29, 2024 at the age of 91.

She attended country school at Corvallis and graduated from Smith Center High in 1950. She then became the first member of her family to attend college when she enrolled at Emporia State Teachers College to become a teacher. She received an emergency certificate due to a teacher shortage and returned to Smith County where she taught at Corvallis and Reamsville country schools for many years.

She married Smith Center native Dallas Maydew in California in September 1955. They lived there until his discharge from the US Marines at which time they moved to Washington State in 1956. Their daughter Sandra was born in 1960 followed by son Kenny in 1972. She finally graduated from college in 1965 and had a long satisfying teaching career. In 1992 she received Teacher of the year for her district and then was nominated as Washington State Teacher of the Year where she was one of three finalists. She always said she was glad she didn’t win so she wasn’t bothered with having to give a bunch of speeches.

Upon retirement she returned to Smith Center in 1995 where she enjoyed spending time with her large family and numerous friends. She was active in several clubs including Sweet Adeline’s, Friends of Harmony and Lebanon Music Club. She loved to sing and entertain.

She was active in Garden Lore, Red Hats and TOPS for many years. She was loved to play cards and was a member of several card clubs. She was still actively gathering with friends to play cards to this day. She enjoyed working in her yard and taking care of her numerous beautiful flowers and plants.

She loved being a grandmother and attending all of her grandkids events. She traveled extensively to Washington to attend her granddaughter’s dance performances. She was lucky to have several local grandchildren and loved attending all their sporting events. She was still actively traveling to attend them until her passing. She was very proud of all of them and their accomplishments. She loved singing to all the children in the family.

She was lucky enough to stay in her own home thanks to loving care from several family members namely daughter in law Rachel.

She was preceded in death by her parents Jess and Arminta, husband Dallas, 10 siblings Irene, Laura, Ken, Jack, Dorothy, Lucille, Glenn, Junior (Dude), Don and Joyce Ann, as well as numerous sister and brothers in law and nieces and nephews.

She is survived by daughter Sandra, son Kenny (Rachel), grandson Shane Hubbard, and granddaughters Kyla (Thomas) Frearson, Kendra, Shelby and Dallas Maydew, as well as great grandson Rex Frearson. She is also survived by two sisters in law Virginia Maydew and Sandy Maydew and numerous beloved nieces and nephews and dear friends.

She was deeply loved and will be terribly missed.

David Lee Rorabaugh, 66, of Smith Center, KS, passed away on April 29, 2024. He was born on January 19, 1958, in Smith Center, Kansas.

David was a loving person, a captivating storyteller, and had a passion for sports, farm talk, and dancing. His interests were as diverse as his warm personality.

In his career, David excelled in farming, ranching, and selling Excel trailers. His dedication and hard work were evident in all aspects of his professional life.

Cynthia Kay Johnston McMullen, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend passed away on April 30, 2024 at the age of 75.

Cindy was born in Pratt, KS on May 16, 1948 to Douglas and Doris Johnston. She grew up in Sylvia, KS and loved spending time on her Grandma and Grandpa Miller’s farm and her Grandma Johnston’s hotel. She moved to Norton, KS in high school when her father took a teaching position as the elementary and junior high band instructor. She graduated from Norton Community High School in 1966 and attended nursing school at Fort Hays State University. She married her high school sweetheart Don McMullen on June 18, 1967 and they had six children together. She said the greatest time of her life was raising her family on their farm outside of Norton.

Cindy loved babies more than anything. After 17 years of raising her own kids and when her youngest two were old enough to go to school, she opened a daycare center and surrounded herself with more babies and kids for 15 more years. She cherished the children and their families that she was blessed to take care of during that time. Her next passion in life came when she bought the Town &amp; Country Kitchen and fed the community amazing meals for 16 years.

One of Cindy’s favorite hobbies was quilting. She made more quilts than one could count! She was a member of the Stitch-n-Bitch Quilt club and absolutely treasured her friends. Cindy had a love of reading and could plow through a 600-page novel in two days. She also loved sappy Hallmark movies. She will be deeply missed by her friends, family, and all who knew her.

Cindy is survived by her six children: Darren McMullen, Derek (Shannon) McMullen, Dawn Michelle (Paul) Cummings, Dannon (Donnie) Jones, Desiree (Kyle) Rohr, and Dallas McMullen. She had 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She is also survived by her two brothers, Bruce (Kathy) Johnston and Jeff (Greg) Johnston, four Johnston nephews and their families, four McMullen sisters-in-law and 12 McMullen nieces, nephews and their families.

Cindy was preceded in death by her loving husband Donald McMullen, her parents Douglas and Doris Johnston, her grandparents Floyd and Alta Miller, and Victor and Effie Johnston. She was very close with her in-laws who also preceded her, Cecil and CeDoris McMullen and brother-in-law Dennis McMullen.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 am Friday, May 3, 2024 at the Norton Christian Church. Burial will follow in the Norton Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 pm Thursday, May 2 at Plumer-Gobber Funeral Home, Norton. Chanxay (Semung) Thammavongsa 65, passed away peacefully while in hospice care surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, April 25, 2024 in Garden City, Kansas. She was born on May 4, 1958 at Vientiane(Ban Mai), Laos the daughter of Sai and Thom Semung. Chanxay married Kaen Thammavongsa on January 1981.

Together, they immigrated to the United States on May 20, 1990 where they settled in Garden City, Kansas. Chanxay started working at Tyson in 1994 where she ultimately retired after 25 years. During her free time, her hobbies included cooking for her family and friends. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her beloved grandchildren. She was very much loved by her children and grandchildren and as well as the local Laotian community.

She is survived by her husband Kaen Thammavongsa, her son, Jason (Manee) Thammavongsa, her 4 daughters Noy Thammavongsa, Phon (Levi) Huber, Lamon (Leo) Bojorquez, Andi Thammavongsa and her 13 grandchildren.

Thane Kenneth Blakesley, age 77, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Western Prairie Senior Living Community in Ulysses. He was born September 5, 1946, in Garden City, Kansas, the son of William Kenton and Iris Lorea (Allmon) Blakesley.

After high school graduation, Thane served in the United States Navy. After his honorable discharge he returned to Ulysses. He married Zetah Verhoeff on March 29, 1984, in Ulysses. Thane was a welder, worked for the Kansas State Highway Department, and retired from the City of Ulysses as a truck driver. He enjoyed watching rodeos and old western movies and television shows. Over the years, Thane and Zetah always had Boston Terrier Bulldogs.

Thane is survived by his daughter, Iris Schwindt and husband Kim of Ulysses; sister, Judy Clifft of Stuart, Oklahoma; three grandsons, Kenneth Schwindt and wife, Stephanie, Kody Schwindt and wife, Laci, and Aaron Schwindt and wife, Celine; eight great-grandchildren, Tori, Keean, Konnor, Mason, Oakley, Sonny, Killan, and Eislee; and many nieces and nephews.

A sus hijos les otorgó gran dedicación al mismo tiempo que les inculcó perseverancia, ética y sobre todo a creer en si mismos.

Era una madre que no encontraba imposibles ni pretextos para sus hijos, aún cuando ese hijo en su inocencia pidiera ir a nadar a un lugar al cual para llegar habia que caminar 5 millas bajo el sol de verano.

Una mamá que tenia el detalle, en el quehacer diario, de hacer sentir especial a un pequeñito de 5 años haciendole tortillas de harina al tamaño de sus pequeñas manos.

Le gustaban las fiestas, la algarabia, el buen ambiente, la musica de Ana Gabriel y las ocasiones en las que todos estuvieran reunidos; si era un cumpleaños mucho mejor!

Vamos a extranar su animo, su sonrisa y sobre todo su lucha, la cual esta reflejada en cada uno de nosotros y en nuestra crianza.

He was born March 24, 1961 in Brownsville Texas the son of Rodrigo C. &amp; Adela (Palomarez) Martinez Sr.

Jr. lived his early life in Texas where the family farmed before they moved to Holcomb in 1981. He was very intuitive and incredibly funny. His pranks were always surprising and often caught family members off guard. Jr.’s Catholic faith was an essential part of his life. He attended Mass and funerals regularly with his parents. He enjoyed trips to Walmart, parties with piñatas, holding babies and the company of family. Even though he was intellectually disabled, he accomplished much and touched many lives. He loved deeply and much of that was devoted to his many nieces and nephews. His presence and experience of life taught our family valuable lessons about unconditional love, patience, and resilience.

Survivors include his Mother-Adela P. Martinez; Siblings-Jose Ignacio Martinez, Rupert Martinez, Sylvia Martinez, Rosemary Erives, Maggie Arias, Maria Isabel Sanchez, Moses Martinez, Stella Martinez-Bejar, &amp; Sam Martinez &amp; Numerous Nieces and Nephews. After graduating from Russell High School in 1959, she then went to Brown Mackie Business College in Salina.&nbsp; Graduating from there she left for Denver to work for Household&nbsp; Finance.&nbsp; After working for them in Denver she transferred to Las Vegas.

She was a talented seamstress; worked for The Denver Dry in china and gifts; Assistant Manager of Walden Books and eventually United Natural Foods all in Aurora.&nbsp; She volunteered many hours at St Pius school and parish and the Food&nbsp; Bank of the Rockies.

On May 24, 1965, in St. Mary’s Church, she married the love of her life, Wesley Wilklow of Denver.

She loved art and classical music, reading, yard work and gardening and travel.

Her last years were spent in the assisted living in Sunrise of Westminster.&nbsp; Morning started with coffee and The Denver Post.

Preceded in death by her parents, her husband Wesley, her brother-in-law Michael Haas of Hoxie and a son-in-law Kelly Miller of Aurora.&nbsp; She is survived by her three daughters MaryLyn (Phil) Papst of Westminster, Holly (Kelly) Miller of Aurora and Collette Lohr and one sister, Margery Haas&nbsp; Hoxie!&nbsp; Her grandchildren, Colton and Mallory Papst, Jon Miller and&nbsp; Emily and Roman Lohr.

Services were held April 19 at St Pius in&nbsp; Aurora with inurnment at St Simeon’s Aurora.

Memorials can be sent to the Food Bank of the Rockies in her name.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ruby Fossett, of Russell, Kansas passed away on April 26, 2024, at HaysMed Center in Hays, Kansas, at the age of 76. She was born on July 17, 1947, to Paul Henry and Lorna Sofia (Kreft) Boedeker of Natoma, Kansas. She was married to Curtis Fossett, of Osborne, Kansas, in 1967. They later divorced.

Ruby grew up in Natoma and graduated from Natoma High School. She attended Fort Hays State University.

She was a housewife and church organist. She also worked at a call center in Hays.

Ruby lived in the Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell for many years. She will be missed by her friends there.

Mary Ann (Hertel) Dinkel – &nbsp;of Victoria, Kansas age 97, passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2024, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

She was born October 29, 1926, on the family farm near Munjor, Kansas to Alex A. and Margaret (Pfannenstiel) Hertel. &nbsp;She married George F. Dinkel on May 11, 1964, at Victoria, Kansas. &nbsp;He preceded her in death on December 3, 2020.

Mary Ann was a homemaker, a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis, and St. Fidelis Christian Mothers, and was a volunteer on the funeral dinner committee. &nbsp;&nbsp;

She attended grade school in Ness City, Kansas, high school at Sacred Heart Academy in Wichita, Kansas, and the Sacred Heart College / Newman University. &nbsp;Prior to her marriage she taught school in Carlsbad, New Mexico and Holcomb, Kansas. &nbsp;She enjoyed playing cards, gardening, sewing and loved to dance.

Mary Ann is survived by her children, Mark G. Dinkel and wife, Cindy, Hays, KS; Cheryl Downes and husband, Charles, Council Grove, KS; her grandchildren, Megan Schroeder (Josh); Michael Dinkel; Ashleigh Dooley (Steven); Rhiannon Chestnut (Bryan); Makenzie Newby (Rhett); Lakoddah Downes; her great grandchildren, Angelina, Riley, Elaina, Scarlet, Sienna and Fulton Schroeder; and Paysleigh and Hadleigh Dooley; her brother-in-law, Father Harvey Dinkel O.F.O. Elizabeth “Libby” Anna Flores, 48, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 28, 2024 at her home in Hays, Kansas, surrounded by her family.&nbsp;

Libby was a midwestern girl, born and raised in Ohio. She graduated from St. Ursula High School. In 1995 she relocated to San Diego, California with her mother and sister, where she met the love of her life, Toby.&nbsp; She and Toby enjoyed their time in La Mesa, CA, fishing at Lake Morena, attending little league games, eateries downtown and live music.&nbsp;

Libby, Toby and their son, Cooper moved from San Diego to Carbondale, IL and eventually found their way to Hays, Kansas where they both embraced life on the prairie. They welcomed their second son, Oscar, to the family in 2007. Libby loved her Hays family, often sharing her love by cooking gourmet meals and 5-star desserts. Libby was an avid quilter and seamstress. She and Toby celebrated 23 years of marriage.&nbsp;

Libby is a graduate of Fort Hays State University, receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Communications with a concentration in Public Relations. She was the Chief Operating Officer for E.L. Achieve, playing a significant role right from the start as employee #1 both in longevity and in the hearts of her colleagues. She was a loving leader providing care and support for the team as well as the larger educational community they served. She graciously shared her warmth with those around her, always with love, compassion, patience, helpfulness, laughter, cheeriness, kindness, friendliness, and inclusivity.

Survived by her husband Tobias R. Flores, sons Cooper J. Flores of Las Vegas, NM and Oscar R. Flores of Hays, KS; furry son, Tank, granddog, Addy and Gazpacho the Gecko; Mother, Stephanie Souviney (Randy) of Encinitas, CA; Father, Charles Ott (Joanne) of Erie, MI; Sister - Megan Grimpas (Angel - niece) of Encinitas, CA; Sister- Michelle Thelander of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, extended family to include Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, nieces/nephew, her Hays family and friends. And to all those whose lives she touched, her unique gift was to make you feel you were her best friend.

Frances “Fritz” Marie (Albers) Ryan, was born to Joseph C and Walburga (Dickman) Albers on January 22, 1939, and was released into the love of our Heavenly Father on April 30, 2024. She joined her heart to Dennis Ryan on May 25, 1957, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Oakley (but only after he taught her to drink coffee-he said they couldn’t get married until she would drink coffee with him). They were blessed with 9 children: Angela (Jack) Myers, Alan (Sherri) Ryan, Cynthia (Frank)DeRee, Monique (Tom) Leavitt, Maureen (Tom) Bruggeman, Paula (Butch) Burris, Phillip (Alaina) Ryan, and Sharon Ryan, who are all left on this earth to continue the legacy of “The Ryan Brats.” Kevin (Elda) Ryan joined Dad (Dennis) in heaven to help prepare the way for Mom’s arrival.

9 of her 13 siblings are also still on this earth, Bernard (Carolyn), Joan Lobmeyer, Mary Jean (Don Delzeit) Ann, Henry (Donna), Bob (Patsy), Rosanne (Marvin Labarge) Fred (Jenny) and Carla (John Deckert).

Siblings Ronnie, Cash, Frank, and Reinette have been preparing the way for her. (Frank probably put a frog in her halo).

She also leaves behind these siblings through love: Joe Schoepner, Annie Ostmeyer, David Ryan, Ethel Ortiz, and Judith Sears.

Mom lived a lot of life in the dashes between her birth and death. We won’t list everything she did and was, because we can’t find a publisher with enough paper to print it all. Oh how we will miss her, but we are joyous with the knowledge that when she closed her eyes for the last time on earth, she opened them to the Glory of His kingdom, and she will be very busy-for she has a lot of catching up to do with all her loved ones who went before her.

Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m., with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 3, 2024, at Baalmann Mortuary in Colby. Mass of Christian Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Colby on Saturday, May 4th at 10:00 am, with burial in the church cemetery. Gary R. Ellis, age 76 years, lifelong resident of Great Bend, passed away at Hays Medical Center in Hays on Friday morning, April 26, 2024.&nbsp; Gary was born on May 10, 1947, at Great Bend to Richard Lon and Lucille (Titsworth) Ellis.&nbsp; He was united in marriage to Clara May Roach on Oct, 28, 1967 at Great Bend – she preceded him in death on Jan, 1, 2013. Gary served in the United States Navy from 1967 to 1971 and worked as a welder and fabricator for American Trailers and Guthrie Trailers in Great Bend, and later worked in the Maintenance Department at Great Bend Packing prior to his retirement. Gary loved going to casinos and playing the Kansas Lottery and fishing, and dearly loved his family and his dogs Skipper, Maggie, and Charlie.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Survivors include two sons:&nbsp; Brian Ellis and Brent (&amp; Chastity Ellis), all of Great Bend; three grandchildren:&nbsp; Chase, Chloe, and Chelsea Ellis; nieces and nephews.&nbsp; Gary was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Clara May Ellis, his daughter Gina Ann Gugins on July 27, 2023, and two brothers (Holly and Jimmy Ellis).

Gary Ellis, age 76

Joyce Irene (Karnes) Peter, 85, passed away with her loving family at her side, April 24, 2024, at the Sheridan County Health Complex. Joyce was born on the family farm in rural Sheridan County on July 22, 1938, to Floyd and Ida Nell (Schropp) Karnes. She grew up with her sister, Judith Weeks and brother, Victor Karnes. Joyce attended Sheridan County High School and graduated with the class of 1956. After graduation, she married Charles Babcock. They moved to Hays, Kansas and were blessed with three children, Douglas, Susan, and Kristine. They later divorced.

Joyce and her children moved to Hoxie where she worked as secretary at the Hoxie High School. In 1971, Joyce married Verl Mowry. He passed away in 1977. Joyce met Gary Gayle Peter, and they were married January 16, 1988. They lived on Gary’s farm and spent many happy years together. Gary passed away on May 20, 1996. Joyce moved back to Hoxie and worked at the Sheridan County Hospital until she retired. Joyce was an excellent seamstress, making many of her children’s clothes and made a blue jean quilt for each of her children and grandchildren. Joyce’s passion was spending time with her grandchildren and family. She was a member of the Hoxie Presbyterian Church and had a deep faith and showed it to others with her kindness and caring. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Joyce leaves to mourn her passing son, Douglas Babcock and wife Dalene of Hoxie, Kansas; daughters, Susan Ellmore and husband John of Garden City, Kansas and Kristine Babcock of Hoxie, Kansas; step-children, Tom Peter, Tony Peter, and Jeni Duerksen; sister, Judith Weeks of Hoxie, Kansas; sister-in-law, Ardith Karnes of Hoxie, Kansas; 9 grandchildren; 8 step-grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Verl Mowry and Gary Peter; brother, Vic Karnes; stepson; Vern Mowry, and step-grandson; Vess Mowry.

A funeral service is planned for Friday, May 3, 2024, 10:30 A.M. at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, Hoxie, Kansas with burial following the service in the Selden Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 2, 2024, from 2:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home with family receiving friends from 5:30 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Joseph Henry Koch, age 57, of Larned, passed away on April 25, 2024, in Larned.

He was born Sept. 25, 1966, in Larned, the son of Ronald J. and Linda L. Wren Koch.

A longtime area resident, he had over 30 years experience in autobody painting. He was a warehouse manager for Auto Body Color and co-owner of Koch’s Kustoms. He was a member of the Santa Fe Trail Center Board and served on the Tired Iron Show and Boots and Brews Committees. He was a Board Member for the Larned Area Chamber of Commerce, Larned Chamber Ambassador, and former volunteer fireman with Larned Fire Department. He coached PeeWee Football and Youth Softball and belonged to the Larned Cornhole Club. He raced regionally for 20 years and won over 40 awards during his career, including 2003 Track Champion and the Sportsmanship Award at DCRP.

On March 15, 1997, he married Michelle L. Nash, in Larned; she survives.

Other survivors include: three children, Morgan Bixenman, Oakley, Joseph Wesley Koch, Larned, Alexandra (Marcus) McKinney, Windsor, Colorado; two sisters, Michelle (Kurt) Snyder, Cimarron, Melissa (Jeff) Moore, Larned; brother, David (Shaula) Koch, Broken Arrow, Okla.; four grandchildren, Stella, Behrett, McKenna, Landry; numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday, May 6, 2024, at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned with Bishop Mark Cowell presiding. Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. Sunday, May 5, 2024, at Beckwith Mortuary. Inurnment will be in Larned Cemetery.

Connie Lou Chance Ratliff (née Dickey), 93, of Larned passed away on April 27, 2024, at Country Living in Larned. She was born to Dr. William O. Dickey and Alice Lucile (Lynch) Dickey on June 3, 1930, in Garden City.

 </figure>Connie Lou Chance Ratliff (née Dickey), 93, of Larned passed away on April 27, 2024, at Country Living in Larned. She was born to Dr. William O. Dickey and Alice Lucile (Lynch) Dickey on June 3, 1930, in Garden City.Connie attended Larned schools and in 1948 married Paul V. Chance. They had six children and raised their family in Larned. Following Paul’s passing in 1989, Connie married Robert Ratliff.After years of keeping the books at Chance Oldsmobile-Cadillac in Larned, Connie worked as a self-employed house painter and paperhanger. She also served as Pawnee County Clerk for a time.She enjoyed sewing and knitting, making clothes for her girls when they were young. She also made many beautiful quilts and enjoyed the camaraderie of quilting with the ladies at First Presbyterian Church; her children and grandchildren treasure many of her quilts today. She was also active in Larned ladies golfing and loved living on the golf course in her later years, tending to her lawn and garden.Connie will be deeply missed by her surviving family, including her children: Carol (John) Nix, Cristi (Terry) Carr, Cathy (Doug) Allison, D.J. (Ann) Chance, and Cory Chance; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; her brother, Dr. William C. (Karen) Dickey; several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, infant son Kelly Joe Chance, brother Dr. Gary Dickey, son-in-law David Vratil, granddaughters Carrie Vratil and Amy Yeager, great-grandson Sam Doherty.The family would like to thank the staff at Country Living in Larned for their care, compassion and thoughtfulness during Connie’s time there, and a thanks to Gentiva Hospice for their care these past few weeks.A memorial service to honor Connie's life will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 30 at the First Presbyterian Church, Larned, with Pastor Bill Stapleton presiding.
