Robert L. (Bob) Levin, Smith Center, was born to William H. and Erna (Engelke) Levin on the family farm north of Kensington, Kansas on June 8, 1937.  He departed this life on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at the age of 86 years. 

In 1957, he married Shirley A. Miller.  To this union three daughters were born: Marci, Michelle, and Melanie, and one son, Kent.  

On February 5, 1993, he was united in marriage to Linda Mathews of Smith Center.  Together they owned and operated Levin’s Ambulance Service for eleven years.  Bob retired in September of 2000, and devoted his retirement time to his life-long hobby, hunting fossils. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill &amp; Erna Levin, sons-in-law, Evert Weis &amp; Gale Ewing, and daughter-in-law, Diane Gibson. 

Bob is survived by his loving wife, Linda Levin of Smith Center; daughters: Marci Rust, and husband Pat of Phillipsburg, Michelle LeiVan and husband Mike of Osborne, Melanie Ewing of Phillipsburg, and Kent Levin of Smith Center.  Stepchildren: Tammy Colwell and husband James of Georgetown, GA, and Jeff Gibson of Gothenburg, NE; plus 11 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. 

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, May 13, 2024, at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, 113 S. Madison St., Smith Center, KS, with Pastor Lance McDowell officiating.  Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 12, 2024, 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., with family present to greet friends, and Monday, May 13, 2024, 9:00 a.m. until service time all at the funeral chapel. Robert L. (Bob) Levin

On April 23, 2024, Ferrill D. Standage, age 88, moved from his home in Kingsland, TX, to his heavenly home with His Lord and Savior, Jesus.&nbsp; &nbsp; Ferrill Standage was born August 1, 1935 in Russell County, KS, to John and Virginia (Rolfs) Standage.

   He has two children from a prior marriage to Sundra Marcotte (deceased).

He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of the home; his two children: daughter, Vicki Gillis, of Loveland, CO, and son, Jon Standage, of Fort Collins, CO; and his grandson. Lucas Gillis, of Loveland, CO. He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia; his father, John; and his brother, Rolf Standage.

Mr. Standage always held a special place in his heart for youth and children. He was a life-long educator who began teaching at Holyrood, KS, in 1959. He later moved to Fort Collins, CO, where he continued his career as an elementary educator. He completed his 36-year career as the elementary and middle school principal in Victoria, KS, where he retired in 1995.

   Mr. Standage attended Westview Church in Hays, KS where he alsoserved 10 years as Associate Pastor. Upon moving to Texas, Mr. Standage attended Church at The Epicenter in Burnet, TX where he served as an elder and Associate Pastor.

   Arrangements are being handled by Jenkins Funeral Home of Burnet, TX.

A memorial service will be held at Church at The Epicenter on Friday, May 17, at 11 AM.

Ferrill D. Standage

Harriet Louise (Casper) Honderick joined her parents in heaven Sunday, May 5, 2024.

Harriet was born Dec. 14, 1955, in Hays, the daughter of Harry and Drucella (Becker) Casper. She grew up in Plainville with her brothers, Harry Casper, Bruce Casper, Richard Casper, and Brian Hashenberger. She was a resident of Rush County for many years. A graduate of Plainville High School, Plainville, Harriet received her Associate Degree in Nursing from Pratt Community College, Pratt. She worked for a time at Larned State Hospital as a pharmacy technician. Later, Harriet worked for Brock Whitmore State Farm Insurance, La Crosse, as an agent.

In September 1973, she married John J. Stout. To this union four children were born, Steven, Carissa, LaShelle, and Jennifer. Harriet and John later divorced.

On July 23, 1993, she married David H. Honderick in Leonard, Texas. He preceded her in death Feb. 4, 2003.

She leaves behind her longtime boyfriend, Ray Buttke; her cherished Pekingese, Hope; one son, Steven Stout (Lynn), Hebron, Neb.; three daughters, Carissa Gentry (Terry), Louisville, Kentucky, LaShelle Schroter (Bill), La Crosse, and Jennifer Stout, Hoisington; one step-son, Craig Honderick, Sanger, Texas; one step-daughter, Conni Souder, Gordonville, Texas; 18 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Harry Casper, Bruce Casper, and Brian Hashenberger.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, John J. Stout; her second husband, David H. Honderick; and her brother, Richard Casper.

A celebration of Harriet’s life will be Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at 3 p.m. at Sonny’s Bar &amp; Grill, Liebenthal.

Per her wishes, Harriet’s family will be scattering her remains privately at a later date.

John Siefkes, age 77 years, passed away at his home in Great Bend early on Friday morning, May 3, 2024. John was born on December 1, 1946 at Stafford, Kansas to Harold Earl and Glendoris Minnie (Kottwitz) Siefkes. He grew up in Ellinwood, Kansas and graduated from Ellinwood High School in 1965.&nbsp; He was united in marriage to Gloria V. Barney on June 29, 1968 at Honolulu, Hawaii.&nbsp; John served proudly in the U.S. Navy returning to Ellinwood in 1970 then moving to Great Bend in 1975, where he had worked in Automotive Body Repair for Reiter Chevrolet, Julian’s Body &amp; Frame, and Marmie’s Collision Center and later worked at Water’s Hardware in Great Bend for a number of years. John attended The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for many years.&nbsp; He loved to bicycle with his wife Gloria, and together they each logged over 120,000 miles on their bicycles.&nbsp; John was a true craftsman at whatever he endeavored, whether it was woodworking and picture framing, gardening, or working with stained glass his perfectionism shined through.

John Siefkes, age 77

Donald Morgenstern, 73, passed away May 4, 2024, at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis, Wichita, Kan. He moved on peacefully, surrounded by his brothers and sisters. He was born May 1, 1951, in Hoisington, Kan., to LeRoy and Loretta (Demel) Morgenstern.

Don attended Pittsburgh State University and then worked at plastics-related companies in Andover and Wichita before returning to Hoisington to farm. Don was recognized with a Kansas Farm Bureau Natural Resources Award. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.

Don loved his extended family, driving a tractor, and a good cheeseburger. He enjoyed his Dr. K with a cigarette, and then a cigarette with another Dr. K. He knew the best way to enjoy baked beans was to pour them over his potato salad.

Survivors include one brother, Robert Morgenstern and wife Jan of Hoisington; three sisters; Joan Rziha and husband Leonard of Hoisington, Pam Willis and husband Greg of Hoisington, and Roxanne Bell and husband Tom of Salina, Kan; and one sister-in-law Lou Ann Morgenstern of Hoisington, and 15 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Jerry Morgenstern, and a nephew, Matthew Morgenstern.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2024, at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington, with Father Warren Stecklein presiding. Interment will follow at St. John Cemetery, Hoisington. Donald Morgenstern, age 73

Leon Gerard Bahr, 68, died April 27, 2024, at his home in Olmitz, Kansas. He was born September 30, 1955, in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Charles and Cecilia (Beran) Bahr. Leon attended St. Ann’s Catholic School and graduated from Otis-Bison High School in 1973. He then attended Barton Community College.

Leon worked as a welder at Rice Engineering in Great Bend for awhile, but his real love was farming and working on the family farm south of Olmitz.

He was a man of faith, and a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by sisters, Judy Getty (Larry) of Hays, and Jane Brack (Bruce), of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; brother-in-law, Howard Morgan (Gert) of Marion; an uncle, Bob Bahr (Kathy) of Spring, Texas; an aunt, Rose Ann Wondra, of Hoisington, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death; his parents, sisters, Helen Morgan and Mary Lou Morgan, a niece, Kimberley Brack, and an infant nephew, Kevin Morgan.

Friends may sign the book 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today thru Friday, there will be no viewing as cremation has taken place. Family will greet friends from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, with Vigil and Knights of Columbus Rosary to begin at 6:00 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Leon Bahr, age 68

Drew Lynn Hoeme was born January 29, 1949, in Scott City, Kansas, to Andrew V. and Betty E. (Triffet) Hoeme. He died on April 28, 2024, peacefully at his home&nbsp;in Olathe, Kansas listening to the Beach Boys with family by his side.

He married Diane Jeanne Engleman on July 11, 1969, in Colby, Kansas.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife; son, Kevin (Trina) Hoeme; daughters, Tammi (Mike) Cummings and Kristi (Jeff) Sheppard; two grandsons, Drew Sheppard and Ty Sheppard; brother, Larry (Kathy) Hoeme; sister, Carol (Steve) Walker; nephews, nieces, cousins, and many friends.

Lynn lived most of his life in Scott County where he also attended school, graduating in 1967. He attended college at Colby Community College &amp; was a farmer/rancher and worked at HRC Feedyard&nbsp;as the Foreman.

She was born October 15, 1928 in Hartville, Ohio, the daughter of Emanuel and Barbara Hochstetler Miller.

Moving from Sheridan, Oregon in 1960, she was a longtime area resident and a homemaker. She was a member of Faith Fellowship, Hanston, Extension Homemakers Unit (Shiley Homemakers), Ness County Farm Wives Coffee Club, and Burdett Seniors. Betty was a coin collector and enjoyed attending church services, making desserts for potluck dinners, cooking, sewing, crocheting and spending time with family.

On May 7, 1961 she married Ivar Dean McJunkin at Great Bend; he preceded her in death in 2008.

Survivors include: two sons, Gary (Rachel) McJunkin, Burdett, Craig (Kimberly) McJunkin, Arkansas City; brother, Elton James “Jim” Miller, New Castle, Colorado; six grandchildren, Caleb McJunkin, Joshua McJunkin, David (Alyssa) McJunkin, Elizabeth McJunkin, Grace (Devin) Smithwick, Benjamin McJunkin.

She was preceded in death by: her husband; parents; three brothers, Roy Miller, Alvin Miller, Orvan Miller; two sisters, Alma Larrew and Dorothy Good.

Deborah A. (Kugler) Tobaben, 62, of Norton passed away peacefully on April 30. Deb was born on April 5, 1962, to parents Carl and Helen Kugler of Lexington, Nebraska. She was raised in Lexington and graduated from St. Ann’s High School in 1980. Deb married her truest love and soulmate, Wendell Tobaben, on May 11, 1984. Deb always loved animals, and she knew she’d found the love of her life when Wendell bought her an adorable little weenie dog. Throughout their marriage, Deb and Wendell gave a loving home to a number of dogs and cats.

Deb and Wendell lived in Cozad, Nebraska, for many years, before moving to Norton, Kansas, in 2017 to find their forever home. Deb loved going on long road trips with her husband, their motorcycles, and their dogs. She also enjoyed going to garage sales with friends and spending time with those closest to her.

Deb will be remembered fondly by her friends and family as someone who was fierce and independent but possessed infinite compassion and a willingness to forgive. Even when life took friends and family down different roads, Deb never allowed the rust to grow between telephone lines. When she loved someone, she loved them forever.

Deb is survived by her dearest little sister, Marilyn S. (Kugler) Twehous and husband Richard of Maricopa, Arizona, older sister, Pauletta (Kugler) Gardner of Granbury, Texas, and her beloved dogs, Bella, Ellie, and Flint, and cats, Mr. Nibbles and Spooky. Deb is also survived by several cherished life-long friends and a number of nieces and nephews around the country. Sister Julia Pfeifer, CSA, baptized Rose Mary, died peacefully May 1, 2024, at Nazareth Center, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.

Rose Mary was born with her twin sister, Anna Mary, in Hyacinth, Kansas on July 18, 1924, to Peter A. and Rose Liberto-Kloppertans Pfeifer. She grew up on a small wheat farm with her twin and fifteen other siblings. The year the twins were born, their father boasted that they had the best wheat crop in Ellis County, Kansas. Rose Mary attended Silverdale District 42 rural grade school and earned her high school diploma from Hays High School, Hays, Kansas in 1943. After high school, she and her twin sister worked at Walker Airforce Base, Walker, Kansas. As World War II continued, a shortage of teachers in Ellis County drew her to enroll in Ft. Hays State College, Hays, Kansas, to earn her teaching certificate. She then taught for five years in rural public elementary schools in Ellis County. In 1950, at the age of twenty-six, Rose Mary decided to enter St. Agnes Convent. She made her first profession of vows in the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes as Sister Julia on August 15, 1953, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.

Sister Julia earned her BS in Elementary Education from Marian College, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. She enhanced this degree with lifelong continuing education credits in religious education, theology, pastoral ministry, and library science. She spent her first year in formation for religious life teaching primary grades at St. Patrick’s School in Hudson, Wisconsin. As a novice and during her first years as a professed sister, she worked at St. Joseph Orphanage, Assinins, Michigan and at Holy Family Orphanage, Marquette, Michigan as Prefect of Girls. From 1958-1996, Sister served as a teacher, religious education director, librarian, school secretary, and pastoral minister in parish settings in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Kansas. In 1997, Sister Julia returned to Hays, Kansas, engaging in a variety of ministries in St. Joseph’s School and Parish and the newly-formed Holy Family School. She could be found in the library fostering a love of reading among children, serving as school secretary, participating in the Foster Grandparent program, teaching CCD classes, visiting parishioners in hospitals and nursing homes, and providing meals on wheels. Throughout her years in active ministry, Sister loved working with children and children loved her. She will also be remembered for her warm smile and witty sense of humor that could brighten anyone’s day.In September 2008, Sister Julia joined the community of sisters at Nazareth Court and Center in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. She enjoyed life with her CSA sisters in this setting while receiving loving care until the time of her death.

Preceding Sister Julia in death were her parents; her brothers Paul, Julius, James, Floyd, Eugene, Gerald, Gilbert, Al, Herbert; her sisters Sister Alma Rose, CSA, Anna Mary Fisher, Virginia Jacobs, Ritha Linenberger.

Sister is survived by her sisters Twila (Harold) Smith, Clarine (James) Baker, Doloris (Ralph) Pederson; her sisters-in-law Sandy Pfeifer and Henrietta Pfeifer; her beloved nieces and nephews and their families, and the Sisters of St. Agnes with whom she lived, prayed and ministered.

A Prayer Service in honor of Sister Julia will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 3, 2024, in Nazareth Center Chapel, 375 Gillett Street, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.

Darlene F. Plymell, 80, Hays, died Thursday, May 2, 2024 at Via Christi Village.

She was born March 5, 1944 in Great Bend, the daughter of Emery E. and Twila M. (Bisbee) Grossardt. Darlene graduated from Claflin High School in 1962, and then she attended Fort Hays State University earning her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Mathematics. On December 19, 1965, she was united in marriage to Jerry McNeill in Hays and they had two daughters, Molly and Sherry. They later divorced. On June 10, 1984, she was united in marriage to Larry Plymell in Hays, and they celebrated nearly 40 years of marriage. Darlene was a dedicated math teacher, teaching at Lexington High School in Nebraska for two years, Hays High School for 35 years, and at FHSU for four years. In 2002, she was named USD 489 Master Teacher of the Year. Her memberships included Hays First United Methodist Church, Milers Sunday School, Hays NEA, and FHSU Alumni Association. She enjoyed reading, knitting, and crocheting, making countless prayer shawls for the church. She loved traveling with Larry and was able to visit all 50 states. Darlene loved her family and attending her grandchildren’s many events and activities.

Survivors include her husband Larry of Hays, father-in-law, Harold Plymell of Hays, three daughters, Molly Legleiter and husband Shawn of Hays, Sherry Kinderknecht and husband Norman of Colby, and Courtney Britton of Goodland, a stepsister, Carol Horton of Great Bend, a stepbrother, Jim Riebel and wife Dee of Lubbock, TX, four grandchildren, Cole Jacobsen, Breckyn Kinderknecht, Bailey Britton, and Logan Britton, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather, Norbert Riebel, her sister, Vonnie Burmeister and husband Fritz, and her stepbrother-in-law, Larry Horton.

Funeral Services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, May 10, 2024 at Hays First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Craig Hauschild officiating. Darlene loved the color red and all are invited to wear a touch of red in her honor. Burial will follow in Mt. Allen Cemetery. Darlene graduated from Claflin High School in 1962, and then she attended Fort Hays State University earning her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Mathematics. On December 19, 1965, she was united in marriage to Jerry McNeill in Hays and they had two daughters, Molly and Sherry. They later divorced. On June 10, 1984, she was united in marriage to Larry Plymell in Hays, and they celebrated nearly 40 years of marriage. Darlene was a dedicated math teacher, teaching at Lexington High School in Nebraska for two years, Hays High School for 35 years, and at FHSU for four years. In 2002, she was named USD 489 Master Teacher of the Year. Her memberships included Hays First United Methodist Church, Milers Sunday School, Hays NEA, and FHSU Alumni Association. She enjoyed reading, knitting, and crocheting, making countless prayer shawls for the church. She loved traveling with Larry and was able to visit all 50 states. Darlene loved her family and attending her grandchildren’s many events and activities.Survivors include her husband Larry of Hays, father-in-law, Harold Plymell of Hays, three daughters, Molly Legleiter and husband Shawn of Hays, Sherry Kinderknecht and husband Norman of Colby, and Courtney Britton of Goodland, a stepsister, Carol Horton of Great Bend, a stepbrother, Jim Riebel and wife Dee of Lubbock, TX, four grandchildren, Cole Jacobsen, Breckyn Kinderknecht, Bailey Britton, and Logan Britton, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather, Norbert Riebel, her sister, Vonnie Burmeister and husband Fritz, and her stepbrother-in-law, Larry Horton.Funeral Services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, May 10, 2024 at Hays First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Craig Hauschild officiating. Darlene loved the color red and all are invited to wear a touch of red in her honor. Burial will follow in Mt. Allen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Thursday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Friday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. Frances Marie Ryan (Albers)

Bernice Coleen Timmons was born in Smith Center, KS on July 20, 1932 to Jess and Arminta (Cronn) Timmons. She passed from this earth on April 29, 2024 at the age of 91.

She attended country school at Corvallis and graduated from Smith Center High in 1950. She then became the first member of her family to attend college when she enrolled at Emporia State Teachers College to become a teacher. She received an emergency certificate due to a teacher shortage and returned to Smith County where she taught at Corvallis and Reamsville country schools for many years.

She married Smith Center native Dallas Maydew in California in September 1955. They lived there until his discharge from the US Marines at which time they moved to Washington State in 1956. Their daughter Sandra was born in 1960 followed by son Kenny in 1972. She finally graduated from college in 1965 and had a long satisfying teaching career. In 1992 she received Teacher of the year for her district and then was nominated as Washington State Teacher of the Year where she was one of three finalists. She always said she was glad she didn’t win so she wasn’t bothered with having to give a bunch of speeches.

Upon retirement she returned to Smith Center in 1995 where she enjoyed spending time with her large family and numerous friends. She was active in several clubs including Sweet Adeline’s, Friends of Harmony and Lebanon Music Club. She loved to sing and entertain.

She was active in Garden Lore, Red Hats and TOPS for many years. She was loved to play cards and was a member of several card clubs. She was still actively gathering with friends to play cards to this day. She enjoyed working in her yard and taking care of her numerous beautiful flowers and plants.

She loved being a grandmother and attending all of her grandkids events. She traveled extensively to Washington to attend her granddaughter’s dance performances. She was lucky to have several local grandchildren and loved attending all their sporting events. She was still actively traveling to attend them until her passing. She was very proud of all of them and their accomplishments. She loved singing to all the children in the family.

She was lucky enough to stay in her own home thanks to loving care from several family members namely daughter in law Rachel.

She was preceded in death by her parents Jess and Arminta, husband Dallas, 10 siblings Irene, Laura, Ken, Jack, Dorothy, Lucille, Glenn, Junior (Dude), Don and Joyce Ann, as well as numerous sister and brothers in law and nieces and nephews.

She is survived by daughter Sandra, son Kenny (Rachel), grandson Shane Hubbard, and granddaughters Kyla (Thomas) Frearson, Kendra, Shelby and Dallas Maydew, as well as great grandson Rex Frearson. She is also survived by two sisters in law Virginia Maydew and Sandy Maydew and numerous beloved nieces and nephews and dear friends.

She was deeply loved and will be terribly missed.

Agra resident, Duane “Pete” Peterson, passed away April 26, 2024 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg at the age of 79.

He was born July 17, 1944 in McCook, NE the son of Carl and Ruby (Miller) Peterson.&nbsp; He served in the United States Navy.

Bob Sander was born March 1941 in Victoria, Kansas to Tony and Ann (Goetz) Sander. He grew up on a farm and attended grade school and high school in Victoria. He then attended Fort Hays State University, where he completed dual degrees in geology and biology.

During that time, he met Linda Stecklein from Hays, whom he eventually married. Their first home was in Victoria, and he began his teaching career at a small country school outside Russell, Kansas. After one year, Bob accepted a teaching position as a science teacher at Abe Hubert Junior High School in Garden City, Kansas. Four years later, he “graduated” to Garden City High School where he also taught various science classes and ultimately became Science Department Head. Through many of his years of teaching, he also coached, or assisted, in numerous sports, but a highlight was being the first Head Girls Basketball coach, a position he held for 15 years. During his tenure as the head coach, he was fortunate to coach three teams that played in the Kansas State Tournament. He eventually retired from teaching after a 40-year career.

Bob had always enjoyed working with his hands. Anytime their home needed updates or additions, he would do most of the work himself. Anytime a neighbor needed help, he was excited to help or lead the project. This eventually turned into a business where he got his contractors license and did it professionally for various years.

Bob is survived by his wife of almost 60-years, Linda and four children, John (Susie) Sander, David (Kristi) Sander, Kay Sander, and Roxie (Tim) Lambert. He has 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 6, 2024, at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City with Fr. Tim Hickey as Celebrant. A private family burial will take place at a later date. He was loved by so many and most of you reading this probably have a story or two that come to mind. Please share your memories of Marlin at any stage of his life.

Although he passed suddenly, his life was the furthest from quick. Marlin was born Nov 7, 1941, in Dearborn, Missouri to his parents (deceased) Charlotte Elaine Crotts &amp; Lawrence Henry Richardson. Not long after he was blessed with a sister, Carolyn Henley who sadly precedes him in death. He is also preceded in death by his children Nathan and Marla Richardson.

Marlin’s life took him to many places- St Joseph, Wichita, California and eventually landed him back in Garden City, KS. He picked up many skills over the course of his life – often describing himself as the cliché “jack of all trades but master of none – except framing.” He built the first home in Sagebrush estates in Garden City, Ks that his mom lived in. Many drives consisted of the car slowing down and a finger out the window- “I framed that one…. And that one…” Garden City brought many adventures to Marlin – he was a self-employed framing contractor, a loving husband and a devoted father. Many non-family described him as a great friend, a bonus dad and a jokester.

He is survived by his wife Lauretta Richardson, and his two daughters- Lexus (Michael) Sukup and Megan (Wyatt) Dooley, his grandchildren Carlee Dooley, Louie Dooley and soon Henry Sukup. Other surviving family include his sister’s children- Desi (Pete) Bell, Amy (Shannon) Sweeny, Marlin (Kelly) Henley and numerous nieces and nephews. Most of his late days were spent at home with his wife, watching animal documentaries, feeding his birds and squirrels. Marlin always had time to tell a story, catch a cup of coffee, or to make a joke. He loved talking to his friends and loved his family. Marlin loved to talk about how short but good life was- “not too bad for an old man.”

A memorial will be held at the Garden City Ks Kingdom Hall at 3:30pm on May 4, 2024. Zoom attendance available.

Sara went to be with the Lord on April 23, 2024, in Garden City, Kansas. She was born in Chickasha, Oklahoma on April 14, 1959, to Thomas Norval Fowler and Jacquelean McKenney Fowler. Sara moved with her family many times throughout her life. She lived in several states and countries growing up including Russell KS, Corpus Christi TX, Odessa TX, Buenos Aires Argentina, Houston TX, Singapore. Living in Buenos Aires Argentina she became fluent in spanish. Sara graduated high school from Singapore American School in May 1977. She attended Oklahoma State University and graduated with a BA in Business Marketing in May 1981. While in college she was an active member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. During college she went on Semester at Sea, which took her around the world. After college she went to work for Cities Service Company, selling lubricants and fuels. She was the first female salesperson for the company.

On April 26, 1986, she married Charlie Robinson at Trinity Episcopal Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She then moved to Garden City, Kansas, living there for 38 years. Sara so enjoyed the community of Garden City. She worked for the Garden City Chamber of Commerce, Robinson Oil Company, served on the Western Kansas Community Foundation Board, was a member of PEO Chapter FF, and was an active attendee of First United Methodist Church and attended New Covenant Women’s Bible study.

Sara will be remembered for her faith, her courage, her strength, her love of learning and how she encouraged us all. Her laugh and smile were infectious to everyone she met. Being loved by Sara was a blessing and we are grateful for the impact that she made in our lives.

She is survived by husband Charlie Robinson (Garden City, KS); daughter Anna Smith, and her husband Justin Smith (Dallas, TX); daughter Caroline Robinson, and her fiancé Mark Gardner (Tulsa, OK); her mother Jacquelean Fowler (Tulsa, OK); her brother Thomas Fowler II, and his wife Carrie Fowler (Houston, TX); cousin Susan Stephens, and her husband Hugh Stephens (Houston, TX); three nieces and one nephew. Gabriel Enriques Reyes, 30, died on Sunday April 28, 2024, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City Kansas. He was born April 12, 1994, in Garden City, Kansas. The son of Maria Alvarez &amp; Ernesto Reyes.

Gabriel was born and raised in Garden City. Gabriel was a handyman who pride himself in the work he did. Gabriel loved food and travelling. His business R&amp;R detailing was a hobby he was proud of. He was a loyal friend who did not hesitate to help others. His passion for adventure was unmatched. He loved deeply and played harder.

Gabriel Enriques Reyes, 30, died on Sunday April 28, 2024, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City Kansas. He was born April 12, 1994, in Garden City, Kansas. The son of Maria Alvarez &amp; Ernesto Reyes.Gabriel was born and raised in Garden City. Gabriel was a handyman who pride himself in the work he did. Gabriel loved food and travelling. His business R&amp;R detailing was a hobby he was proud of. He was a loyal friend who did not hesitate to help others. His passion for adventure was unmatched. Timothy Craig Haynes, age 57, of Hays, KS, passed away on April 18, 2024, at Ascension Via Christi-St. Francis in Wichita, KS. Born on October 25, 1966, in Salina, KS, Timothy was the son of Thomas J. Haynes and Karen J. Lacy.

Timothy dedicated himself to the oilfields, working as a roughneck for Southwind Oil Company and various other local oil companies. When he wasn't hard at work, he found joy in the great outdoors hunting and fishing.

Timothy's memory will live on in the hearts of his loved ones. He is survived by his father, Thomas J. Haynes of Hays; two sons, Elon Meyer of Westminster, CO, and Harley Haynes of Hays; two daughters, Talia Haynes of Tucson, AZ, and Jazmine Lohrmeyer of Hays; a brother, Terry Haynes of Hays; a sister, Marie Haynes of Overland Park, KS, as well as nine grandchildren, Tyler, Brooklyn, Razariah, Reviahna, Oliver, Ronan, Daunte, Aries, and Cyrilla. He was preceded in death by his mother, Karen, and his stepmother, Lora Gallegos-Haynes. His beloved hunting companion Biff also survives him.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:00 PM on May 4, 2024, at Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory-Brock's Chapel, located at 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.

Eleanor A. “Ellie” Gabel, 84, Hays, died Monday, April 29, 2024 at HaysMed.

She was born October 31, 1939 on the family farm in Gove, the daughter of Carl W. and Olive E. (Summers) Katt. She was a graduate of Gove High School with the class of 1957. In 1961, she graduated from St. Anthony School of Nursing and as a registered nurse, she worked at St. Anthony Hospital, Baxter Travenol, and at Fort Hays State University Student Health. On October 12, 1963, she was united in marriage to Gerald J. “Gary” Gabel at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays and they celebrated 60 years of marriage. Together, Gary and Ellie owned and operated Gabel’s Bakery and the Bijou and Red Coat restaurants. Her memberships included St. Joseph Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella Circle #254, RN Club, and the Cedar Bluff Red Hat Ladies. She enjoyed doing word searches, playing Solitaire, and watching Wheel of Fortune and Bold and the Beautiful. Ellie was a wonderful cook who was known for her delicious German food including liverwurst and zitter. Gary and Ellie enjoyed gardening and canning, camping, being at Cedar Bluff Lake, and their home was always a welcoming place where family and friends could enjoy food, drink, conversation, and much laughter.

Survivors include her husband Gary of Hays, a brother, Ron Katt and wife Karol of Victoria, a sister, Ruth Porter and husband Norman of Johnson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Friday, May 3, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Richard Daise officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Thursday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Friday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. A Nightingale Tribute will be at 5:30 pm, a Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6:00 pm, followed by a vigil service at 6:30, all on Thursday at the funeral home. Eleanor A. “Ellie” Gabel

Arnelda Irene Buras Kepka, of Dorrance, KS, passed away on April 28, 2024, at the Wilson Care &amp; Rehab, at the age of 96. She was born on July 17, 1927, to Walter and Florence (Glazik) Buras in Omaha, NE. Arnelda married Raymond Anton Kepka on August 22, 1953, at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Omaha. They were blessed with 7 children: Pamela, Debra, Henry, Michael, Ray Jr., John, and Paulla.

Arnelda grew up in Omaha and graduated from South Omaha High School in 1945. Her last year of high school she also worked at Boys Town personalizing letters. She was a secretary for the Board of Education at Joslyn Castle for three years and was a secretary/payroll supervisor for Tumpane for five years. She then left the big city and all her family and friends to move to a small farm in the middle of Kansas where she raised her family with great joy, never complaining about having to leave Omaha.

Arnelda was a woman of deep love and devotion, and her faith in God was not only a constant source of strength for herself, but also for her family and friends. She was such a caring person who always thought more about others than herself. Her pride and joy were her children and she watched over them like a mother hen watching over her chicks. Arnelda spent much of her time in the kitchen cooking and baking cookies for her family. She also spent a lot of time patching clothing and writing letters to her numerous extended family members, never missing a birthday acknowledgement for all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Arnelda will be greatly missed by all who knew her, but the celebration of her life and memories will never be forgotten.
