Harvey Paul Steier, age 79 passed away after a short battle with cancer on April 25, 2024, in Atwood, KS. Harvey was born June 9, 1944, in Oberlin, KS. He met his wife Cheryl Frecks at Cheryl's birthday party in McCook, NE. Harvey married Cheryl on October 25, 1965, and they started their life together in Oberlin, KS. They had one daughter, Melinda Gooch and one son, Shawn Steier.

Early in his career, Harvey worked for Decatur County and got his start working with heavy equipment. In 1970, they moved to Colorado where he worked in the oil fields and at a concrete company. The couple moved to Atwood in 1975, where he worked for Rawlins County. In 1982, he left his job at the county to farm. His greatest joy while farming was raising cattle. He retired from farming in 2012. He was a legend at running heavy equipment and there wasn’t a piece of machinery that Harvey couldn’t operate.

After retiring, Harvey continued to work various odd jobs around Atwood which ranged from plumber's assistant, sanitation truck driver, to caretaker of the fairgrounds. He also enjoyed occasionally babysitting with his wife, Cheryl. Through babysitting he got to know three special little girls, Josie, Haisley and Ruth. Harvey was always more than willing to cooperate with whatever was on their agenda for fun. The girls enjoyed putting barrettes in what little hair Harvey had left and painting his fingernails to ensure he was always looking his best.

Harvey's biggest legacy was his work ethic. He was always a hard worker and often worked 12-hour days 6 days a week. He still managed to find a way to attend as many of his children’s activities as possible. Harvey’s work ethic was instilled into his children and has now been passed down to his grandchildren. Brady is an Electrical Engineer, Jami is a Software Engineer, Gavin is attending college for a game design degree and Ava, will be attending college in the fall on a scholarship and pursuing a degree in nursing.

Harvey is survived by his wife Cheryl Steier; his daughter Melinda Gooch (Phil): his son Shawn Steier (Annette Purdon); and his four grandchildren, Brady Gooch (fiancée Elisabeth Paxton), Jami Gooch (Josh Miller), Gavin Steier and Ava Steier.

Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 2, 2024, at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood. Lois E. Cooper, 90, of Lucas, Kansas, died on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the Hospice House of Reno County in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Lois was born on November 20, 1933, in rural Osborne County, Kansas, the daughter of Ray and Mildred (Smith) Robinson. She grew up on the family farm north of Lucas, Kansas, and graduated from Lucas High School in the class of 1951 and attended one year of college at Ft. Hays State University. She was united in marriage to M. Francis “Sonny” Cooper on August 10, 1952, in Lucas, Kansas. From this union Lois and Sonny were blessed with two daughters Marian and Mona. She worked in the Lucas and Sylvan banks as a teller and in the insurance and real estate agencies. After leaving the Sylvan bank she opened North Star Realty. This was her pride and joy as she enjoyed helping people through the real estate process. Lois was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, President of the Golden Age Center, and Charter member of the Lucas Historical Society. She enjoyed learning and sharing Lucas history, the Lucas Historical Society museum, her latest passion. When she was resting, gardening, sitting on her deck, and discussing farming were her hobbies. Most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great granddaughter.

Surviving family include her daughters Marian Kay Gier and husband Leo of Osborne, Kansas and Mona Ray Kaufman and husband Randy of Lucas, Kansas; grandchildren Garred Gier, Rhett Kaufman and wife Mary and Rawly Kaufman and great granddaughter Hailey Gier.

Sheila Rochelle Engel, 63, of Norton, KS passed away April 24, 2024 at the hospital in Oberlin, KS. She was born April 25, 1960 in Smith Center, KS to Norman and Carol (Drake) Olliff.

Sheila grew up in Norton and was a 1978 graduate of Norton Community High School. Sheila married her high school sweetheart, John Engel, on June 24, 1979 at the Norton Christian Church. They would have celebrated their 45th anniversary this coming June. She worked at the First State Bank for 20 years, the City of Norton office for a few years, and then as the Program Assistant for the Farm Service Agency office until her retirement. Sheila enjoyed crafting and went to many craft shows with her mom where they sold their creations. She adored her farm kitties and would dote over them everyday. She had a great love and talent for photography and would capture anything that caught her eye. From landscapes to her family, you would always find Sheila behind her camera trying to get the perfect shot. John and Sheila went on many travels together in their camper, with family and friends often joining them on their adventures. A couple of times, they spent months traveling to sight-see, gold pan, and crystal hunt. Digging into the mountainside to collect crystals was one of Sheila’s favorite activities.

Sheila is survived by her husband, John Engel; daughter, Ashley (Dean) Milner of Navarre, FL; son, Matthew (Sandy) Engel of Hays, KS; grandchildren: Wylder Milner, Blakely and Kannon Engel and one grandson on the way; father, Norman Olliff of Norton, KS; brother, Verland Olliff of Norton, KS; and many extended family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Carol Olliff; grandmother, Freda Drake, and grandfather, Leland Drake.

Dighton- Marvin Roberts, 82, died on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at Lane County Hospital in Dighton. He was born on November 9, 1941 at Quinter the son of Carlos D. &amp; Elizabeth L. (Bentley) Roberts. He married Opal M. Nelson on May 29, 1971 at Rush Center.

Marvin graduated from Dighton High School in 1959 with the Class of 1959. He served with the United States Army in Viet Nam in an artillery division. After his discharge he returned to Lane County where he was a lifelong farmer and rancher. He was a member of the Shields United Methodist Church and later the Dighton United Methodist Church where he served on many committees and boards of both. He was a longtime Lane County Hospital board member and a 4-H leader and supporter. Marvin enjoyed trips to the Colorado mountains for 4 wheel drive jeep adventures, blue grass festivals, trips to historical places and observing oil wells and drillings in Lane County. He had a large shark tooth and fossil collection that he gathered. His special joy though was following his kids and grandchildren sporting and other activities down to taking Ella prom dress shopping.

He is survived by his Wife- Opal Roberts, 3 Sons- Glenn C. &amp; Rene Roberts of Dighton Ross S. &amp; Kimberly Roberts of Scott City and Darren P. &amp; Jessica Roberts of Shields, 2 Brothers- Allen Roberts of Bismarck, Arkansas and Carl Roberts of Shields, 2 Sisters- Ellen McCue of Wichita and Vada Winger of Bertram, Texas and 7 Grandchildren- Ella, Christopher, Dakota, Spencer, Daisy, Ravanna and Ava. Thane Kenneth Blakesley, age 77, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Western Prairie Senior Living Community in Ulysses. He was born September 5, 1946, in Garden City, Kansas, the son of William Kenton and Iris Lorea (Allmon) Blakesley.

After high school graduation, Thane served in the United States Navy. After his honorable discharge he returned to Ulysses. He married Zetah Verhoeff on March 29, 1984, in Ulysses. Thane was a welder, worked for the Kansas State Highway Department, and retired from the City of Ulysses as a truck driver. He enjoyed watching rodeos and old western movies and television shows. Over the years, Thane and Zetah always had Boston Terrier Bulldogs.

Thane is survived by his daughter, Iris Schwindt and husband Kim of Ulysses; sister, Judy Clifft of Stuart, Oklahoma; three grandsons, Kenneth Schwindt and wife, Stephanie, Kody Schwindt and wife, Laci, and Aaron Schwindt and wife, Celine; eight great-grandchildren, Tori, Keean, Konnor, Mason, Oakley, Sonny, Killan, and Eislee; and many nieces and nephews.

Shirley J. Letourneau-Rogler 89 died December 10, 2023 at her home in Green Valley, Arizona with her husband Jack by her side. She was born July 7, 1934 in rural Kincaid, KS the daughter of Otto and Inola (Giffin) Nichols.

Shirley married Dean Letourneau on June 12, 1954. He passed away on December 13, 2001 at MD Anderson in Houston, TX with Shirley by his side.

Shirley taught in Garden City School System for many years before teaching at Garden City Community College. She touched the lives of many and left lasting memories for all who had the privilege of being one of her students or knowing her.

Shirley was a beautiful lady inside and out. She was an inspiration and admired by everyone. She invested 100% of herself in everything she did. She loved to learn but more importantly she loved teaching others. She enjoyed traveling and being adventurous. She accepted everyone at their level, and always gave them a chance. Shirley helped and generally cared for others, but above all she was humble. Her hobbies which gave her much joy included cooking, gardening, reading and writing. Shirley enjoyed golfing and had two holes in one during her golf time over the years and she was also a very good racquetball player and had won numerous trophies.

Shirley reunited with her high school sweetheart John (Jack) Rogler in 2003 and they were married on December 12, 2019. They spent their golden years together traveling the world.

Survivors include husband John (Jack) Rogler of Green Valley, Arizona, children Craig (Nhung) Letourneau of Houston, Texas, Brent (Lisa) Letourneau of Clifton Park, New York and Sheri (Kent) Denton of Garden City, Kansas sister Sandra Prawl of Manhattan, Kansas, grandchildren Bryan (Shelby) Letourneau of United Kingdom, Mark Letourneau of Albany, New York and Jade Denton of Wichita, Kansas. Shirley is preceded in death by her first husband Dean and her parents.

She touched the lives of many and left lasting memories for all who had the privilege of being one of her students or knowing her.Shirley was a beautiful lady inside and out. She was an inspiration and admired by everyone. She invested 100% of herself in everything she did. She loved to learn but more importantly she loved teaching others. She enjoyed traveling and being adventurous. She accepted everyone at their level, and always gave them a chance. Shirley helped and generally cared for others, but above all she was humble. Her hobbies which gave her much joy included cooking, gardening, reading and writing. Shirley enjoyed golfing and had two holes in one during her golf time over the years and she was also a very good racquetball player and had won numerous trophies.Shirley reunited with her high school sweetheart John (Jack) Rogler in 2003 and they were married on December 12, 2019. He was born on September 24, 1949 in Victoria, the son of Celestine and Catherine (Leiker) Windholz. Julius dedicated his life to his passion as a painter, leaving behind a legacy of creativity and artistry. He also enjoyed his work at Smoky Hill Country Club and U-Save Pharmacy.

He is survived by his two devoted sisters, Celeste Sander (Vernon) and Wilma Windholz, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his loving parents and an infant brother, Joseph. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.

Therean L. Towns, of Palco, Kansas, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2024, at Redbud Village in Plainville, Kansas. He was born August 24, 1936, in Palco to Russell and Edna (Thyfault) Towns. Therean grew up in Palco and after graduating from Palco High School, he attended Kansas State University earning a B.S. Degree in Animal Science in 1957. He later received his Master’s in Education from Fort Hays University. On January 25, 1958, he married Mary Doreen (Fickel) Towns in Chanute, Kansas. They moved to Palco where he farmed with his father, raised their family, and taught vocational agriculture at Palco. Mary preceded him in death on April 20, 2018.

Therean taught Ag for 30 years at Palco High School. He loved to teach young people and share his knowledge and love for agriculture and Hereford cattle with his grandkids. To make it more special, Therean was a Charter member of the Palco FFA Chapter and was Palco’s FFA first state farmer. Therean continued his love of teaching young people as a 4-H leader for 20 years.

Farming and ranching were a very important part in defining who Therean was. He was a member of the Kansas Hereford Association. Therean and Mary were named master farmers in 1995. This honor was in recognition of their leadership in Ag environment stewardship and service to the community. Together they were involved in the program.

Therean belonged to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. He was a faithful member willing to support the church in any way he could. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, and he taught CCD with Mary for 20 years.

Therean is survived by his son, Sean Towns and wife Sandra of Palco, Kansas; daughter, Santana Towns of Palco, Kansas; twelve grandchildren, Roscoe Holloway, Jacob Towns, Monica Roberts, Topanga Towns-Davis, Alexander Towns, Kamillia Keller, Francis Towns, Mary Claire Motzel, Madeline Towns, Miriam Towns, Thaddeus Towns, and Jesse Towns; and eleven great-grandchildren, Freya Towns, Tsoka Davis, Odessa Holloway, Selena Towns, Alayah Towns, Zayne Towns, Claire Motzel, Willow Roberts, Oaklynn Towns, Kaiyu Davis and Emery Towns.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Towns; and sister, Nancy Werner.

Therean had an unwavering faith and unending love for God and family. He loved his family unconditionally. Although he is gone from our sight, his unending love for family, his wisdom, and philosophy of life will live on in all the lives he touched.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, April 29, 2024, at 10AM, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville with interment to follow in St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery in Zurich, Kansas. Visitation will be Sunday, 6PM to 8PM with a Vigil Service at 7PM at the church.

Gilbert Peter Hecker – age 88 of Hays, Kansas passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at Salina Regional Health Center.

He was born December 5, 1935, in Park Kansas to Martin M. and Frances (Ziegler) Hecker.&nbsp; Gilbert married Caron A. (Stevenson) on January 17, 1959, in Oakley, Kansas.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on December 8, 2017.

He was a manager of Hardman Lumber Yard in Russell, Kansas for 16 years until he and his wife moved to Hays, Kansas in 1986.&nbsp;

Gilbert attended a country school for two years then went to school in Oakley, Kansas and was a 1954 graduate of Oakley High School.&nbsp; He also attended Fort Hays State University after his military service.&nbsp; He was a veteran of the US Army and spent most of his two years in France.&nbsp; Gilbert moved to Homestead of Russell in 2023, he was a member of Saint Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Gilbert is survived by his sons, Robert Hecker, Watkins, CO; Douglas Hecker, Russell, KS; his daughter, Jacqulen “Jackie” Postier and husband, Lowel, Inman, KS; his brother, Alvin Hecker, Tampa, FL; his sister-in-law, Irene Rose, Oakley, KS; his grandchildren, Jesse Postier; Amanda Postier; Jordan Hecker (Courtney); Taylor Vasquez (Leo Jr.); Jonathon Hecker; and his great grandchild, Benjamin Hecker.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Frances; his wife, Caron; his brothers, Virgil Hecker; and Jimmy Hecker; his sisters, Valerie Devers; and Darlene Kitendaugh.

Cremation has taken place, and the family will have a private inurnment at Saint Joseph Cemetery in Hays, Kansas at a later date.

Susan Kathleen Beilman, 65, of Topeka, passed away Friday, April 19, 2024 surrounded by her family in her home.

She was born August 29, 1958, in Scott City, KS, the daughter of Lester and Josephine (Younger) Richardson.

Susan was employed by Topeka West High School for 28 years, until retiring in 2020.

Mrs. Beilman was a member of the TARC and Special Olympics, of Topeka.

Susan married Joseph Beilman on June 5, 1976 in Hays. He survives.

Other survivors include daughters, Patricia (Daniel) Burgess, Danelle Beilman and Nichole Beilman, son Ralph (Sarah) Beilman, 5 grandchildren, sister, Deborah Diehl, brother, Leslie Richardson.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Richard Richardson.

Susan loved her family especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed collecting antiques and avidly volunteered her time for the Special Olympics.

Susan was cremated. A private family memorial ceremony will be held at a later date.

Wilbert Joseph “Billy” Sanko, 37, passed away April 20, 2024, at the University Of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus, Great Bend, Kan. He was born August 13, 1986, at Great Bend, to Michael and Claudia (Salbashian) Sanko.

Billy, a lifetime resident of Great Bend, had been employed as a machinist at GBI. He was a member of Prince of Peace at St. Rose Catholic Church and enjoyed off roading, cruising the river, hunting, fishing, camping, and hobby mechanic work. Billy was full of character, the life of the party, and could always turn life’s lemons into lemonade.

Survivors include his parents; one brother, Christopher Sanko and wife Merry, and their children Immalee and Kasper, all of Great Bend; and three half brothers, Lucas Sanko and Danny Sanko, both of Oklahoma, and Frank Costelli of Florida; and significant other, Andrea Wallis of Great Bend.

Robert Lee Shaffer, known as Bob to those who knew him or Bobby to many loved ones, passed away on April 21, 2024, in Dighton, Kansas. He was born on November 9, 1941, to Ross H. Shaffer and Edna P. Shaffer in Canton, Ohio. Bob was a resident of Dighton and moved to Texas.

He was a graduate of Sandy Valley High School in Magnolia, Ohio , the class of 1959, and went on to pursue military duty at Schilling Air Force Base in Salina, Kansas, serving as a Mission Engine Mechanic. He established a career as a business owner and equipment operator in the farming industry, as well as for several county and state entities.

Bob’s hobbies included a passion for woodworking and welding, enjoyed time as a car racing fan and had a great knowledge of vintage vehicles.

Bob was preceded in death by his spouse, granddaughter, parents, and siblings. His memory is held by his surviving family; his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as extended family.

Karl J. Holsch, 46, died Saturday, April 20, 2024 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington, KS.

Visitation will be Friday, April 26, 2024, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home in Linn, KS.&nbsp; The family will greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m.

Karl was born in Leavenworth on November 16, 1977 to Ralph and Patsy (Stabe) Holsch.&nbsp; In 1996, he graduated from Linn High School and attended Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; August 8, 2009, Karl married Stacie Ptacek at Wilson, KS.&nbsp; They had two children, Kaison and Kamdyn.

He was a carpenter and worked for different construction companies.&nbsp; Karl attended Queen of Holy Rosary in Overland Park.&nbsp; In his spare time he enjoyed spending his time with his wife and children, friends, fishing, being outdoors, photography (especially sunsets) and listening to music.&nbsp; Karl loved sports, especially, OU, playing cards and racing with his brother.&nbsp;

Karl was a loving husband and father; he had a kind heart and contagious laugh. He was charismatic, charming and his narrative ability was uncanny.

Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Ruth and Herman Stabe, Hilda and Klaus Holsch; and uncles Raymond Holsch and Charlie Lodes.

Survivors include his wife, Stacie; children, Kaison and Kamdyn; parents, Ralph and Patsy Holsch; brother, Kevin (Rebecca) Holsch; and nieces, Alahna and Ashtyn.

An education fund has been established for his children.&nbsp; Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home.

Evelyn Irene Kee, 96, of Natoma, Kansas, died on Monday, April 22, 2024, at the Redbud Village in Plainville, Kansas.

Evelyn was born on May 13, 1927, in Pasadena, California, the daughter of Melvin and Berniece (Manley) Griffin. She was very young when the family moved to Natoma, Kansas, and she graduated from Natoma High School in the class of 1944. She was united in marriage to Raymond P. Luhman. He passed away in March of 1950. To this marriage one son, Ray Luhman was born. She worked as a secretary for Natoma Grade School for several years. Later, she was united in marriage to James W. Kee, Alton, Kansas, who had a daughter Nancy and sons Jim, Wayne, and Gary. To this marriage a son, George, was born. The Kee family then moved to the Kee ranch in Woodston, Kansas. She enjoyed Kansas State University Football, painting, traveling and her family most of all.

Surviving family include her son Ray Luhman and wife Diana of Colby, Kansas; stepsons James Kee and wife Ernestine of Stockton, Kansas and Gary Kee and wife Karin of Oxford, Iowa; sister Bernita Schneider of Natoma, Kansas, sisters in-law Marsha Griffin and Barbara Griffin, 11 grandchildren, and numerous great grand children, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, son George Kee, step daughter Nancy Harmon, step son Wayne Kee, 3 brothers and 1 sister.

A Celebration of Evelyn’s life will be held at 11 A.M. on Monday, April 29, 2024, at the Peace Lutheran Church at Natoma, Kansas. A graveside service will follow at the Woodston Cemetery in Woodston, Kansas, at 2 P.M. Family will greet friends from 10 A.M. to service time on Monday at the church. Lawrence Gene “Larry” Desbien, of Damar, KS, passed away on April 22, 2024, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, KS, at the age of 69. He was born February 13, 1955, to Phillip E. and Verna O. Lawrence Gene “Larry” Desbien, 69, of Damar, Kansas died April 22, 2024, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. Larry was born February 13, 1955, to Phillip E. and Verna O. (Simoneau) Desbien in Hays. He grew up with his six siblings in and around the Damar area. He attended grade school in Damar and graduated from Palco High School in 1973.

Following graduation, he attended Vocational Tech in Beloit, Kansas, becoming an electrician. Larry married Christine Hamel June 14, 1975, in Zurich and together they raised five children. His first job in his field was at Hadley Hospital in Hays. He then was in maintenance at St. Anthony Hospital also in Hays, and the hospital in LaCrosse.

In 1980 Larry enlisted in the United States Air Force. Here he became a ground radio communications craftsman. Six years of his service were filled with many overseas deployments including: Alaska, Japan, Australia, Guam, and France. Throughout his military service, Larry displayed a deep commitment to his country. Following 20 years of military service, he retired with the rank of Master Sergeant, and returned to Damar. Beyond his miliary career he was a pillar of strength and support for his family, friends, and community. He organized and led the Memorial Services on Memorial Day in both Damar and Bogue until his health declined.

Family and Faith were always the most important part of Larry’s life. Larry was a devout Catholic and an active member of St. Joseph Church in Damar. He gave his time and talents as a Religious Education teacher, Eucharistic Minister and Lector.

As a civilian Larry did substitute teaching in the area and soon became the maintenance and transportation director for USD 269. A few years later, Larry joined the Midwest Community Bank staff in Plainville and Palco. He began as a loan officer, and later a compliance officer until he retired.

Full retirement kept Larry very active and busy. As a grandpa of 16, he was definitely hands-on. He willingly accepted the duty of sexton for St. Joseph Cemetery and had various hobbies and projects he was always excited to tell you about. And his story wouldn’t be complete if we left out his love for raising cattle.

Left to mourn Larry and to follow his legacy of love and service are his devoted wife, Chris of Damar; sons: Perry Desbien of Smith Center and Travis Desbien and wife Rachael of Hill City; daughters: Mindy Desbien of Damar, Tracy Stithem and husband Chris of Topeka and Savannah Desbien of Topeka; brothers: Ed Desbien and wife Mary of Boise City, Oklahoma, Jim Desbien and wife Paula of Plainville, Richard Desbien and wife Wanda of Nampa, Idaho; sisters: Gerry and husband Don Larson of Hays, Chris Sillin of Hutchinson, and Sheila and husband J.F. Surmeier of St. Joseph, Missouri; 16 grandchildren: Emily, Amber, Jason, Brady, Rylan, Lincoln, Scarlet, Graham, Alexis, Parker, Maelyn, Nolan, Evelyn, Ellie, Emmett, and Bentley; many nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Larry’s warm smile, kind heart, and gentle spirit endeared him to all who knew him. He will be remembered foldly for his sense of humor, his love of adventure, and his steadfast loyalty to those he cherished. Rest in Peace, good and faithful servant.

Lawrence Gene “Larry” Desbien

Donna Marie Burghardt was born July 1, 1924, and lived with her parents, Harlan and Thelma (English) Dettweiler on a farm just west of Kingfisher, Oklahoma. She married LeRoy Edwin Burghardt on December 31, 1941, and together they celebrated 61 years of marriage before Roy’s passing on October 9, 2002.

Marie and Roy had three children: her only son, Ron (Sandra of Hastings, NE), who also preceded her in death, December 13, 2003, and two daughters, Janet (Rich McDaneld) Waters of Osborne, KS and Phyllis (Monte) Johnson of Atlanta, GA.

Marie and Roy enjoyed taking their travel trailer throughout the continental United States and Canada. She enjoyed crocheting and was kept busy making baby blankets for her eleven (11) grandchildren, twenty-two (22) great-grandchildren and thirty-four (34) great-great-grandchildren.

Marie went home to be with Jesus on April 20, 2024, at the age of 99, less than three months from her goal of surviving until her 100th birthday.

Garden City- Jeff Jones, 59, died on Monday, April 22, 2024 at St Catherine Hospital in Garden City. He was born on March 10, 1965 at Atwood the son of Jerry &amp; Sue (Depugh) Jones. He married Sarah Sarber in Garden City.

Jeff moved with his family to Garden City in 1972. He attended Georgia Matthews and Alta Brown Elementary schools before graduating from Garden City High School with the Class of 1983. He started his working career as an Auto Mechanic at Garden City Co-op Car Care Center which later became Midas before moving to Spikes Brothers Farms. In 1994 he started his career at Finney County Feeders and currently was Assistant Manager.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He especially enjoyed bow hunting deer. He was a member of the High Plains Bass Masters Fishing Club. His time at the lake fishing is where he found the most enjoyment in life. He was dearly loved by his nieces and nephews and was always there to help them in any way he could.

He is survived by his Parents- Jerry &amp; Sue Jones, Brother- Jay &amp; Julie Jones, 3 Sisters- Kim &amp; Brian Meyer, Stephanie &amp; Mike Pittillo and Jennifer &amp; Temo Ramos all of Garden City and his Nieces and Nephews.

His parents are Miguel Angel Garcia and Leanna Beth (Claussen) Garcia. He has two brothers Michael James Garcia 17 and Judah Nathaniel Garcia 11. His Grandfather is James Dean Claussen of Deerfield KS, and his grandparents Veda Carolina Garcia and Angel Garcia of Mexico.

Israel was born again of the water in baptism in the name of Jesus and filled with the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues at The Apostolic Church in Garden City, KS. Israel loved God and had a love for the truth. He was always trying to find ways to invite people to church so that they could be saved.

Israel was a lover of the outdoors. He loved going fishing and hunting when he had a chance. He was a dreamer and He dreamed of someday owning his ranch and learning everything he could to achieve his dream. He was a freshman at Deerfield High School in Deerfield, KS. He was a member of the Deerfield FFA Chapter and the Trapshooting team. His favorite subjects in High School were weightlifting and all of his Ag classes. His least favorite was Algebra 1, LOL.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 26, 2024, at The Apostolic Church 3102 E Schulman Ave., in Garden City, KS 67846. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Visitation hours are from 10:00 a.m. to service time on Friday at the Apostolic Church. Betty Jo Oberhelman, age 72, died on April 23, 2024, at Cedar Village Care Center, Ness City. &nbsp;She was born on May 2, 1951, in LaCrosse, Kansas, the daughter of Ronald and Josephine (Dechant) Robinson.

Betty was a member of the Ness City Methodist Church and was the owner of Betty’s Beauty Nook which she operated until her health would not allow. &nbsp;While her children and nephews were in school, she supported them in all of their activities. &nbsp;When the grandchildren came along her attention turned toward them and they became her pride and joy. &nbsp;One picture of each grandchild was not enough for Betty but a photo for every year had to be on display.

On September 18, 1971, she married Gail Oberhelman in Ness City. &nbsp;Together they raised their two children and two nephews in their home in Ness City. &nbsp;He proceeded her in death on December 22, 2022.

Betty is survived by her children, Cetra Horton and her husband, Curtis, of Fort Scott and Chad Oberhelman and his wife, Kristina, of McCracken; two nephews that she and Gail helped raise, Erik Ellis and his wife, Laurel, of LaCrosse and Charlie Ellis of Fort Sill, OK; nine grandchildren, with one on the way; and one great grandchild; and two sisters, Wanda Roehl and her husband, Steve, of Wichita and Nancy Pink of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gail, and her siblings, Eddie, Bud, and John Robinson, Pam Ellis, and Rhonda Robinson.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024, 10:00 a.m. at the Ness City Methodist Church followed by burial in the Ness City Cemetery. &nbsp;Viewing will be held at Fitzgerald Funeral home on Friday, April 26, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m.

Ricky Gene “Rick” Blakesley, 64, of Hutchinson, died April 22, 2024, at home surrounded by his family. &nbsp;He was born July 12, 1959, in Russell, to Claude Ray and Margaret Ellen (Boxberger) Blakesley. &nbsp;

Rick graduated from Hays High School in 1978, National College in 1996, and the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, in 1980. &nbsp;His work career was quite varied. &nbsp;Rick was a deputy for the Barton County Sheriff’s Department, oilfield worker for B.J. Titan, team member at Arconic (formerly Alcoa), before retiring from Reno County Youth Services and the Reno County Public Works Department.

Rick was a proud member of the Sons of the American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68 and volunteered every year at the National Junior College basketball tournament. &nbsp;He supported the Hutchinson Salthawks, Hutchinson Blue Dragons, and enjoyed watching the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas University basketball. &nbsp;In his spare time, he collected coins, worked on old cars, and rode his motorcycle. &nbsp;Above all, Rick loved his family. &nbsp;He was a proud son, husband, father, grandfather, and brother. &nbsp;Rick was always there to support his three children in their school activities, take family vacations, and spoil and tease his six grandchildren. &nbsp;He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson.

On May 18, 1985, he married Lori Michelle Otte, in Great Bend.

Rick is survived by: &nbsp;his wife of almost 39 years, Lori Blakesley of Hutchinson; children, Audree Lynn Blakesley Senestraro (Adrian Joseph) of Lawrence, Emile Michelle Blakesley Frantz (Dylan Jeffrey) of Lubbock, TX, and Tanner Blakesley (Claire Morgan Gee) of Topeka; grandchildren, Maddison and Maia Senestraro, Maddex and Brynley Frantz, and Avery and Eleanor Blakesley; parents, Claude and Margaret Blakesley of Salina; siblings, Ginny Neil (Allan) of Derby, Tina Burtzloff of Salina, and Rodney Blakesley (Barbara) of Urbandale, IA; and his beloved dog, Cosmo.

He was preceded in death by: &nbsp;his grandparents, Ted Boxberger, Leona Price, and Vernon and Delia Blakesley; brother-in-law, Tom Burtzloff; and his beloved four-legged Zoey.

Rodney Allen Thacker, age 62, passed away on April 20, 2024 at the Flagstaff Medical Center in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Rodney was born on February 27, 1962, to his parents Ernest H. and Thelma G. (Wells) Thacker.

He was united in marriage to Michelle (Lehman) Thacker on June 3, 2006.&nbsp;

Rodney is preceded in death by his father Ernest Thacker.

Survivors include his wife Michelle Thacker of Hays, Kansas, son Quinn Buffington of Overland Park, Kansas, daughter Zoe Buffington of Hays, Kansas, Brother Doug Thacker of Casper, Wyoming, sister Carrie Bredemier of Colby, Kansas, and mother Thelma Thacker of Phillipsburg, Kansas.
