James E. “Jim” Daniels, 70, passed away July 18, 2020, at the 
University Of Kansas Health System-Great Bend Campus. He was born on 
December 12, 1949, at Dallas, Tex., to Mary Lou Carey and James Daniels.
 He married Connie Pedigo on July 28, 1975, at Great Bend. She survives.

A current Great Bend resident, James was a milk delivery driver for 
Highland Dairy Farms. He liked to golf, fish and hunt. He enjoyed 
spending time with his family but especially enjoyed spending time with 
his granddaughter, Madyson.

Survivors include, his wife, Connie Daniels of the home; his daughter
 Rhiannon McNulty and son in law Brent; two brothers, Marvin Terhune and
 wife Kathy of Carbondale, and Randy Terhune and wife Kim of Maple Hill;
 and a sister, Doris Terhune of Independence, Mo; and a granddaughter, 
Madyson McNulty. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, 
Roberta Brost.

Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 27, 2020, 
at Great Bend Cemetery North, with Reverend Dick Ogle presiding. In lieu
 of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Education Fund 
for Madyson McNulty, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

James E. 'Jim' Daniels

Richard Lee Cecil came into this world August 15, 1941, but most 
would say he left as Marvin Puckelschwartz. He was humorous to the end, 
telling his daughter Tonya when asked within hours of his death if she 
could get him anything, to which he replied with a crooked smile “lots 
of money” he peacefully passed on July 19, 2020.

Born in Los Angeles, California the eldest son of Doit and Lucille 
(Allen) Cecil.&nbsp; The family moved to Dodge City where the Lamplighter 
Club was started by the family and became a staple of Dodge City and the
 surrounding communities.&nbsp; Richard graduated from Dodge City High School
 where he was a standout athlete and could often be mistaken as the 
doppelganger of James Dean.

Richard met Helen M. Kimminau in 1963 and it was love at first 
sight.&nbsp; They married June 29, 1964.&nbsp; Helen thought she was getting the 
handsome, bad boy movie star Clint Eastwood look alike, only to find out
 she got Bozo the Clown.&nbsp;

Richard had a long and renown career with the postal service, known 
around town as the “mailman”.&nbsp; He could be seen traipsing down Wyatt 
Earp in his Santa suit at Christmas delivering mail and handing out 
candy.&nbsp; He retired after 41 years in 2006. &nbsp;Although that was his 
profession his passion was people.&nbsp; He was a Rembrandt at making people 
laugh and he painted many masterpieces.

Richard is survived by his wife Helen of 56 years.&nbsp; His children 
Tonya Maier and husband Garry Lee. Chance, Chace and Charnea.&nbsp; 
Grandchildren Brayton Maier, Ayrton Maier, Nicholas Nieves and Ariszay 
Nieves. Brothers Donny and Ronny and a host of cousins and loyal 
friends.&nbsp;

Richard was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Cathedral; he never 
lost his faith and love in God. He survived gangrene, a quadruple 
bypass, a stroke, paralysis, a broken neck, stomach cancer, and was 
preparing to fight liver cancer.&nbsp; He wasn’t worried about a virus named 
after a beer taking him out!

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at “I
 Don’t Care Family Restaurant” (because we all know…he actually didn’t

Jonathan Francis Flax, age 30, died July 17, 2020 at the Grisell 
Memorial Hospital, Ransom, Kansas. He was born on April 9, 1990 in 
Ransom, Kansas, the son of Denice (Ary) and Kenneth Flax.

On August 28, 2010, he married Jayme K. Salmans in Ransom. To this union two children were born, Kalihan and Kamden.

Jonathan was a 2008 graduate of Western Plains High School. He was 
very active in the Ransom community, serving on the school board, 
coaching and refereeing basketball and baseball for the Rec. Commission,
 as well as refereeing for various sports for the school. He volunteered
 to judge at many forensic meets and scholars bowl meets. Jonathan was a
 member of St. Aloysius Church, and he was a 3rd and 4th
 degree Knight of Columbus. Jonathan attended firefighting school and 
was a volunteer firefighter for Ransom, where he was awarded Firefighter
 of the Year in 2012 and 2016. Jonathan enjoyed playing the drums, and 
he painted beautiful landscape pictures.

Surviving Jonathan are his parents, Kenneth and Denice; his 
grandparents, Darrell and Judy Ary, all of Ransom; his daughter, Kalihan
 and his son, Kamden, both of Utica, KS; his three brothers, Kelly Flax 
and his partner, Kristen Shull of McCracken, Jayme Flax and Darren Flax,
 both of Ransom; his niece, Alyce Davis, and his nephews, Maxstyn 
Avritt, Ezra Davis, Silas Flax, and Rowen Flax, all of McCracken, and 
nephew Keegan Hall of Ness City; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He
 is preceded in death by his grandparents, Francis and Marjorie Flax.

Funeral service will be held on July 22, 2020 10:00 a.m., at St. 
Aloysius Church, Ransom.&nbsp; Those wishing to “social distance” may watch

Jonathan Francis Flax

Lifelong Sharon Springs, Kansas, resident Wilma J. Whitney, 74, died Wednesday, May 20, 2020, at El Dorado, Kansas.

She was born January 11, 1946, in Goodland, Kansas, the daughter of 
Loren Bradford Armstrong and Hazel Alvina (Wilson) Armstrong.&nbsp; She 
graduated from Wallace County High School, Sharon Springs, and attended 
Colby Community College.

On December 18, 1966, she and Billy Dean Whitney were married at the 
United Methodist Church, and they made their home in Sharon Springs, 
where they raised two daughters.&nbsp; Throughout their lives together, Wilma
 and Billy faced much adversity, but they raised their daughters with 
the values of resilience and community service. As the late county 
historian and newspaper columnist Ruth Jackson wrote in 1995 in The 
Western Times, “I’ll salute […] Bill and Wilma Whitney. They have had 
their problems, but manage to survive. They are a great couple, always 
smiling and helping each other and the community at large.”

Wilma often worked multiple jobs to support their family, and taught 
her daughters by example that hard work and service to others are 
important. She was the longtime manager of the Strand Theatre and 
curator of Fort Wallace Memorial Museum, worked at the Sharon Springs 
Public Library, and served for many years as the director of the Sharon 
Springs Housing Authority, amongst other jobs. She also owned and 
operated a business, Whitney Tax Service, for several decades.

From her childhood years in Smoky Valley 4-H Club to leading the 
Wallace County Historical Society as president for several terms, Wilma 
literally spent most of her life in public service, all of it in Wallace
 County. She was a former president and longtime member of Smoky Valley 
EHU, leading and helping with countless volunteer efforts over 50 years;
 served as treasurer of the Wallace County history book second volume; 
was a former member of the Wesleyan Women's Circle and longtime United 
Methodist Women member; and a lifetime member of Fort Wallace Historical
 Society and the Sharon Springs United Methodist Church.&nbsp; In 1986, she 
served as chairwoman and organizer of the Sharon Springs Centennial 
Celebration. Wilma was deeply touched when she was awarded the Lifetime 
of Service Award in 2017 by the Wallace County Foundation.

But she was known by her friends and neighbors especially for her 
baking. Wilma baked often for others, taking meals and treats to 
shut-ins and helping with monthly birthday parties at the nursing home. 
This volunteer spirit continued even in her final months staying in 
Emporia for healthcare reasons, baking muffins and cookies for her new 
neighbors. She didn’t know a stranger. She would often find a sack of 
bananas on her door with a note asking if she’d like to make banana 
bread or muffins today.

She taught her daughters to make and give May Day baskets each year, 
as well as platters of Christmas cookies and candies. Her grandchildren 
were welcomed each year to “Camp Grandma,” when she planned arts and 
crafts projects, baking, Bible school, and helping with their 4-H 
projects.

Wilma deeply treasured her trips in later years with daughter 
Tiffany, “bonus sister” Barbara, and her aunt Marvel. She enjoyed 
visiting Las Vegas, Georgia, Branson, taking an epic road trip to 
Nashville, and last year, a trip-of-a-lifetime Alaskan cruise.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Billy; infant son, Dallas 
Dean Whitney; her parents; and three brothers, Robert Armstrong, Ben 
Armstrong, and Billie Armstrong.

Surviving family includes daughter Charity Horinek and her husband 
Mark of Sublette; daughter Tiffany Ochs and her husband Troy of Emporia;
 eight grandchildren, Lorrin Ochs and fiancé Caleb Strohm of Burlingame;
 Cassidy Ochs of Emporia; Hope Horinek, Hannah Horinek, Noah Horinek, 
Elizabeth Horinek, Ainsley Horinek, and Trelawney Horinek, all of 
Sublette; great-granddaughter Naomi Orth of Sublette; sisters Betty 
Yotter of Leoti and Donna Price of Tribune; brother Jim and his wife 
Cindy Armstrong of Ulysses; sisters-in-law Barbara Engel of Sharon 
Springs, Marilyn Armstrong of Leoti, and Marilyn D. Armstrong of 
Wichita; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Wilma June (Armstrong) Whitney

Thomas Joseph Gilmore, 82, of Blackhawk Assisted Living, Springhill, Kansas, passed away early Saturday morning July 11, 2020 of heart issues. He was surrounded by John, Liz and Dahlia Gilmore when he passed peacefully.

Tom Gilmore was born September 21, 1937, in Newton, Kansas, to Pascal Gilmore and the former Mary Kathryn Elson; his father was in pipeline construction contracting, eventually forming Gilmore Pipeline &amp; Oil Field Construction Co. with his brother J.B. in Hays, Kansas.

He grew up in Oklahoma and Kansas, principally Great Bend and Hays, Kansas. He was a 1959 graduate of Fort Hays Kansas State University and a member of Kappa Sigma Kappa fraternity.

He served in the Army Reserve and was always proud of his service to our country. In 1961, he married the love of his life, Sharon Gioe of Indianapolis, Indiana. They were happily married for 53 years until she passed in 2014. Tom and Sharon were the proud parents of Stephanie Sharifi, a special education teacher, and John Pascal Gilmore, owner of Vintegrity Missouri and Vintegrity Kansas.

Tom was a Certified Public Accountant and was proud to dedicate countless and long hours to giving his clients the best possible service. Tom began his career in Wichita, Kansas with F.B. Kubic &amp; Co. and when the family moved to Bloomington, Indiana, Tom was a partner at Guy Wiley &amp; Co., later being acquired by George S. Olive. However, the most rewarding work for Tom was his last position with Toby Prince CPA where he enjoyed Toby’s youthful energy, dedication to doing the job right and where he felt he contributed to helping build Toby’s practice.

He was an avid supporter of the Indiana University Hoosiers basketball team and a lifelong New York Yankees fan, who always kept score, whether he was at the ballfield or watching a game on TV. His cousin Tom Greenwade, the Yankee scout known for signing Mickey Mantle, was a personal hero. Tom absolutely loved being in a ballpark with family and no shirt ever escaped mustard from his hot dog at any game. Tom and John had a 15 year streak of attending every Yankees/ Royals series, with Aunt Ginny and Uncle Bob sometimes coming from Connecticut to attend. He felt deeply the absence of professional and collegiate sports during the coronavirus epidemic.

Since childhood, the most important thing to Tom was his family and he never got over the death of his father when Tom was just fifteen. He vowed to spend every single minute possible with his kids and never missed a game, concert, or school event. Tom and Sharon both were wonderful grandparents, helping both John and Stephanie with their children whenever the opportunity arose. Tom had a special place in his heart for his granddaughter Jessie, and she seemed happiest in his arms.

In addition to his son and daughter, he is survived by sisters Virginia Vocelli and Carolyn McGovern; by grandchildren Jeremy Lomax and his wife Erica Louie, Jessica Sharifi and Dominique Sharifi, and Dahlia Gilmore; and by Liz Mendez-Gilmore, wife of John; Michael Sharifi, husband of Stephanie; Robert Vocelli, husband of Virginia; Dan McGovern, husband of Carolyn, and Katie McGovern-Pizzi, her husband Richard Pizzi, and their daughter, Reilly; and by cousins Louis Carl Gilmore, David Elson, and Denise Elson Tucker.

Tom’s guiding principle was The Golden Rule “Treat others as you would like others to treat you.” He believed in helping people who needed a hand and honoring your word. Tom had an incredible work ethic that Stephanie always exhibited, and John later adopted after messing around in high school and college. John’s favorite lesson from his Dad was that if you borrow something from someone, you bring in back in better shape than it was when you got it.

Tom’s family will miss his over-the-top sense of humor, the loving way he cared for them and the kindness he showed to all.

Funeral Services will be held July 24 at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, MO 64145 (816-942-6180) from 11 am to 12 pm. Visitation only with social distancing and masks required.

 </figure>Thomas Joseph Gilmore, 82, of Blackhawk Assisted Living, Springhill, Kansas, passed away early Saturday morning July 11, 2020 of heart issues. He was surrounded by John, Liz and Dahlia Gilmore when he passed peacefully.Tom Gilmore was born September 21, 1937, in Newton, Kansas, to Pascal Gilmore and the former Mary Kathryn Elson; his father was in pipeline construction contracting, eventually forming Gilmore Pipeline &amp; Oil Field Construction Co. with his brother J.B. in Hays, Kansas.He grew up in Oklahoma and Kansas, principally Great Bend and Hays, Kansas. He was a 1959 graduate of Fort Hays Kansas State University and a member of Kappa Sigma Kappa fraternity.He served in the Army Reserve and was always proud of his service to our country. In 1961, he married the love of his life, Sharon Gioe of Indianapolis, Indiana. They were happily married for 53 years until she passed in 2014. Tom and Sharon were the proud parents of Stephanie Sharifi, a special education teacher, and John Pascal Gilmore, owner of Vintegrity Missouri and Vintegrity Kansas.Tom was a Certified Public Accountant and was proud to dedicate countless and long hours to giving his clients the best possible service. Tom began his career in Wichita, Kansas with F.B. Kubic &amp; Co. and when the family moved to Bloomington, Indiana, Tom was a partner at Guy Wiley &amp; Co., later being acquired by George S. Olive. However, the most rewarding work for Tom was his last position with Toby Prince CPA where he enjoyed Toby’s youthful energy, dedication to doing the job right and where he felt he contributed to helping build Toby’s practice.He was an avid supporter of the Indiana University Hoosiers basketball team and a lifelong New York Yankees fan, who always kept score, whether he was at the ballfield or watching a game on TV. His cousin Tom Greenwade, the Yankee scout known for signing Mickey Mantle, was a personal hero. Tom absolutely loved being in a ballpark with family and no shirt ever escaped mustard from his hot dog at any game. Tom and John had a 15 year streak of attending every Yankees/ Royals series, with Aunt Ginny and Uncle Bob sometimes coming from Connecticut to attend. He felt deeply the absence of professional and collegiate sports during the coronavirus epidemic.Since childhood, the most important thing to Tom was his family and he never got over the death of his father when Tom was just fifteen. He vowed to spend every single minute possible with his kids and never missed a game, concert, or school event. Tom and Sharon both were wonderful grandparents, helping both John and Stephanie with their children whenever the opportunity arose. Tom had a special place in his heart for his granddaughter Jessie, and she seemed happiest in his arms.In addition to his son and daughter, he is survived by sisters Virginia Vocelli and Carolyn McGovern; by grandchildren Jeremy Lomax and his wife Erica Louie, Jessica Sharifi and Dominique Sharifi, and Dahlia Gilmore; and by Liz Mendez-Gilmore, wife of John; Michael Sharifi, husband of Stephanie; Robert Vocelli, husband of Virginia; Dan McGovern, husband of Carolyn, and Katie McGovern-Pizzi, her husband Richard Pizzi, and their daughter, Reilly; and by cousins Louis Carl Gilmore, David Elson, and Denise Elson Tucker.Tom’s guiding principle was The Golden Rule “Treat others as you would like others to treat you.” He believed in helping people who needed a hand and honoring your word. Tom had an incredible work ethic that Stephanie always exhibited, and John later adopted after messing around in high school and college. John’s favorite lesson from his Dad was that if you borrow something from someone, you bring in back in better shape than it was when you got it.Tom’s family will miss his over-the-top sense of humor, the loving way he cared for them and the kindness he showed to all.Funeral Services will be held July 24 at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, MO 64145 (816-942-6180) from 11 am to 12 pm. Vernie Lee Nelssen, age 93, passed away on Wednesday July 15, 2020, at the Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center, KS.

Survivors include 2 daughters Judy (Dennis) Schmidt of Smith Center and Janeen (Bob) Hughes of Valley Center; 2 sons Jim of Manhattan and Jeff (Traci) of Wichita; 6 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren.

There will be a public visitation held from 5PM until 7PM Tuesday July 21, 2020, at the Simmons-Rentschler Mortuary.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:30AM Wednesday July 22, 2020, at the Simmons-Rentschler Mortuary.

Vernie Lee Nelssen

Sharon “Sherri” K. Wells of Norton, passed away on July 18, 2020 at the 
Logan Manor in Logan, Kansas. Sherri was born on March 8, 1949 to 
Killian and Regina (Ruder) Gerber in Plainville, Kansas. Sherri was 
united in marriage to Emery Wells Jr. in November of 1985 at the 
Plainville Courthouse. She was blessed with two children, Andrew and 
Trisha.
 Sherri spent a lot of her life moving around. She was a native to 
Rooks County but moved to Denver and Wyoming for several job 
opportunities, and in the early 2000’s she relocated to Norton to live 
near her family and spend the rest of her years enjoying her kids and 
grandkids. She graduated from Plainville High School and attended Colby 
Community College where she earned her Associates Degree and a Training 
Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She loved to take care 
of others and spent the majority of her years as a CNA. 
 Sherri was a faith filled woman and attended catholic churches 
everywhere she moved. She took pride in her yard work and enjoyed 
gardening, mowing, and all together staying busy. Whether she was 
attending to her lawn, taking part in worship, taking care of others, 
cooking, or chasing grandkids, she was always staying busy.
 Left to cherish her memory are her children, Andrew (Devaney) Wells 
of Norton and Trisha (Jarrod) Lawson of Norton; sisters, Sandy (Bob) 
Dreiling of Aladdin, WY, Sheryl Brown of Hays, KS, and Susan (David) 
Axelson of Parachute, CO; grandkids, Damian Lawson, Dillon Lawson,

Stella Adella Augustine, age 92, of 
Ellis, Kansas, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2020 at Hays Medical 
Center. She was born July 21, 1927 in Ellis County, Kansas to Ignatz and
 Rosa (Weber) Lang Jr. She graduated from Ellis High School in 1945. On 
February 6, 1946 she married Paul Peter Augustine at St. Mary's Catholic
 Church in Ellis. He preceded her in death on October 12, 1999.

Stella was a homemaker. She was a 
member of St. Mary's Church and the Ellis Daughters of Isabella. She 
taught first communion classes for several years and she enjoyed 
gardening and bowling.

She is survived by two sons, Melvin 
Augustine and wife Gini of Ellis and Dean Augustine of Ransom, Kansas; 
three daughters, Jean Brungardt and husband Mel of Wichita, Kansas, 
Connie Jones and husband Terry of Woodward, Oklahoma and Janice Horne 
and husband Richard of Buckeye, Arizona; 14 grandchildren and 24 great 
grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents; a daughter, Mary Augustine; four brothers, Joe, Johnny, Godfrey
 and Lawrence Lang as well as three sisters, Catherine Wolf, Bertha Lang
 and Rose Marie Augustine.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM 
Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at St. Mary's catholic Church in Ellis. Burial 
will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday 6 PM - 8 PM 
with a combined parish vigil and rosary at 7 PM. Wednesday visitation

Stella Adella Augustine

Mr. Thomas Henry Wellington II was born March 1, 1946 in Los Angeles, California. He was the eldest of four children born to Lloyd L. and Doris Moss. Both parents preceded him in death.

Thomas was baptized at an early age by his uncle, the Elder Clovis A. Wellington while attending Wadsworth Church Of God in Los Angeles, California. He attended South Park Elementary, Gompers Junior High, and Fremont High Schools, Graduating from S. M. Dorsey High School, Los Angeles, California in 1964. He loved sports, lettering in Track and Football. He later attended San Bernardino Valley College and received his AA degree in Liberal Arts with a Minor in Water systems Reclamation and Distribution. His greatest past time was roller skating at various roller rinks.

In 1966 Thomas enlisted into the US Navy for four years, where he served two combat tours of Vietnam, his decorations include:

• Vietnam Campaign Medal (w/1960 Device)

• Vietnam Service Medals (w/3 Bronze Stars for

• Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation

Ribbon Bar (Gallantry Cross w/Palm and Frame)

• And the Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal, for the twelve years he served as a Drilling Naval Reservist. His chief duties were the commands Recruiter, and Career Counselor.

We honor this highly decorated combat veteran for his extraordinary heroism in action, displaying gallantry, determination, in accomplishing his unit’s mission under extremely difficult and hazardous conditions, where 13 men in his unit lost their lives in a single engagement against an armed enemy during the 1968 Vietnam Tet Offense.

Thomas loved the West Pacific especially, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippine Islands. While station in Subic Bay, he studied Kuntaw Kung-Fu Karate obtaining a “First Degree Black Belt”.

In 1972 Thomas married Bessie LaVerne Haley. To that union daughters Sonia Ruth and Tanya Cherrelle were born.

A year later he became an apprentice in the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 12, where he operated

various types of heavy construction equipments. In 1972, Thomas was informed that Heavy Construction equipment perators were needed on the Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline Project. He worked 2 1/2 years on the pipeline, were he encountered grizzly bears and moose and was amazed at the massive size of the animals in real life. He loved talking about his experience on the pipeline project, were he said he would “Work ah While......Pan ah While” for Gold!

He also loved fishing for salmon at his favorite fishing place. Most of his friends thought the one mile hike through the woods was too far to go for salmon knowing bears would be in the area.

Thomas loved Alaska so much that he moved his family to Anchorage in 1977. That year Thomas began a career with the U. S. Department of Defense at Fort Richardson’s Central Power Plant. He held positions as Steam Turbine Generator operator, Boiler Plant Operator, and Electric Power Controller. He obtained his Class 1 Stationary Engineers License, and was promoted to Operation &amp; Maintenance Supervisor WS-12. During the latter years of his career in Alaska he also obtained License and Certification in Water Treatment and Distribution.

Upon retirement from Federal Service in 2004, he received the Department of Army, Achievement Medal, and Medal &amp; Certificate of Appreciation for Dedicated Service.

Thomas said every young man needs guidance in his life’s journey, and that his three role models were; Mr. Melvin Brown of Los Angeles, CA. who thought him automotive mechanics and street sense; Pastor, Dr. Alonzo B. Patterson Jr., Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, Anchorage, Alaska thought him how to, sheet rock walls, and ceilings at Shiloh, to

be humble, pray and ask God for vision and purpose; and Rev. Jesse Wilson Jr. who happen to be Chief of Utilities Plants Branch, were Thomas worked at Fort Richardson. Thomas said Jesse would keep him focus. To be humble, steadfast, patient and to always stay close to “The Fire.”

Thomas attended church all of his life. He was youth choir director at Compton First Church of God, and sung in church and community choirs from Los Angeles to Anchorage, Alaska. He was taught by some of the best in the gospel recording industry, such as; James M. Smith (Jay) Greater New Unity Baptist Church of Los Angeles, California;

Cooky Levy, Park Avenue Missionary Baptist Church of Riverside, California; Harrison (Bubba) Johnson Los Angeles Community Choir, California; Henry Jackson Company of Los Angeles, California; Daryll Hawk, GMWA Anchorage, Alaska Chapter; and the Rev. James Cleveland, Great Grace Memorial COGIC, Los Angeles, California.

Thomas‘ professional affiliations include; Anchorage Alaska Municipal Light &amp; Power Commission, The Alaska Black Caucus, Boy Scout Master, American Legion, Coalition of Vietnam Vets, Re-enactor &amp; past member of Nicodemus Buffalo Soldiers Association, past member of the Alaska Chapter Gospel Music Workshop of America, and President, Nicodemus Historical Society.

He awaits the Homegoing Passage of his two daughters, Three Grandchildren, Michael, Kiyana, and Daylin all of Anchorage, Alaska, brothers, Melvin Hamilton of Los Angeles CA, Rev. Timothy L. Wellington of Nicodemus, Kansas, Larry L. Wellington (unknown), Edward L. Lumpkin Wellington (unknown), sisters Barbara Christian of Denver, Colorado, and Herlinda Bowen of Bloomington, CA.

Linda Kay Hicks entered eternal life at the age of 73 early Friday morning, November 22, 2019, at her home in Wichita, Kansas&nbsp;after a battle with liver disease.&nbsp; Linda was born in Hays, Kansas to Harlan and Emma (Zachmann) Hicks, loving mother of three children.

Linda received her bachelor’s degree in Art Education in 1968 from Colorado State in Greeley, Colorado. Linda grew up in Western Kansas where her family ran local “hamburger joints”, which were most known for her mother’s homemade pies.&nbsp; In 1961 they moved to Denver, Colorado and settled in the Wheatridge area along with other aunts and uncles.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In 1969 she married Dean Dietz and moved from Colorado back to Kansas. She raised her three girls on great home cooking, while dabbling in crafts, serving others and always opening her home in hospitality. She earned her second bachelor’s degree in Social Work in 1994 at Wichita State University and worked as a LBSW for over ten years in foster care, family preservation, and aging. Uniting this with her art skills she created an Art-X-Press program to counsel children and the elderly. Her main passion was pottery and she was eventually able to go full time with Cat’s Paw Pottery where she saw such successes as being featured on Martha Stewart, at Silver Dollar City, and with Joyce Meyer Ministries Dream Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Linda combined her slab pottery skills and love for serving the Lord by creating and donating handcrafted items for organizations to use as well as giving pottery wheel demonstrations to teachings that we are all jars of clay in the divine Potter’s hand. Linda grew up writing poems, drawing and painting.&nbsp; She had a love for gardening and cooking, but one of her favorite things was watching the birds and she always ensured they had plenty of seed to eat.&nbsp; Linda has always loved furry creatures.&nbsp; Her most beloved memory was bottle feeding and hand raising a full litter of kittens.

Linda was preceded in death by her mother, Emma, her father, Harlan, and her daughter, Krista.&nbsp; She is survived by two children, Erin Dietz (Texas) and Shannon Dietz (Kansas), two grandchildren, Chase Sheydaei (Colorado) and Ava Fagan (Kansas), beloved cousins, and many exchange students around the world.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2020, come and go from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm at Mud Haus, 922 East Douglas Avenue, Wichita, Kansas 67202. Linda was laid to rest at the WaKeeney City Cemetery in WaKeeney, Kansas.

In lieu&nbsp;of flowers Memorial donations may be made to LAPP, Lifeline Animal Placement &amp;&nbsp;<a href="http://protection.org/">Protection.org</a>&nbsp;where she volunteered her time. Joseph Lee Willis, age 41, died on July 16, 2020, at the Ness County 
Hospital, Ness City.&nbsp; He was born on February 13, 1979, in Huntingdon, 
Tennessee, the son of Willie Lee and Linda (Johnson) Willis.

Visitation will be held at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City on Sunday, July 19, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.&nbsp;

Joseph Lee Willis

Wendell L. Felsburg age 78, was born on October 2, 1941, to Walter and 
Norma (Franklin) Felsburg of Gaylord, KS. He grew up the oldest of four 
children on the family farm just south of town. He passed away on July 
18, 2020 at Parkview Care Center in Osborne, KS.
 At the age of 18, he joined the US Navy where he served four years, 
during peace time, as a Radioman on an aircraft carrier. He returned 
home and started driving a milk truck around his hometown area. He then 
worked for Conrad Irrigation for several years followed by CE Johnson 
Trucking owned by Thomas Johnson, both of Gaylord, KS. 
 He began driving commercially for Curtis Trucking out of Denver, CO,
 where he earned his first 1 Million Miles in truck driving from NY to 
LA. After that he drove for Ligon Trucking out of Paducah, KY. He drove 
for Graves Truck Line’s Jayhawk Division for over 10 years. He also 
drove for Bruenger Trucking out of Wichita, KS for many years. Then in 
1996, he moved from commercial to private trucking and hauled grain for 
local farmers and corn seed for Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. out 
of Doniphan, Nebraska.
 Late in his career, he and his brother, David, paved the way in 
revolutionizing how Pioneer unloaded their corn seed from the trailers 
by bringing Wilkens Walking Floor Trailers to corn harvest in 1997. By 
doing this, they were able to haul twice as many loads as the other 
drivers with normal trailers. Within 2 years, Pioneer made it a 
requirement for all drivers that hauled for them to have the walking 
floor trailers during corn harvest due to Wendell and David’s foresight.
 This was a highlight of his 50+ years as a semi-truck driver, retiring 
in 2019 with over 3 Million miles to his credit.
 He and his wife of 53 years, Ann Jean (Runnion) of Norton, KS, were 
married on February 13, 1967. They raised three daughters in the town of
 Gaylord, KS. They also helped to raise a granddaughter and a grandson 
that they grew to consider as their own children. He enjoyed watching 
stockcar racing, time with family, and hitting golf balls with friends 
at the driving range. He also served for many years on the Gaylord City 
Counsel. 
 He is survived by his wife, Ann Felsburg of Gaylord; his sister 
Martha (Bill) Watkins of Cummings, GA; his brother Keith (Esmerelda) 
Felsburg of Lake Elsinore, CA; daughters, NormaJean Felsburg of Norton, 
KS; Loretta (Danny) Standley of Wichita, KS; and Wendy (Shawn) Luman of 
Hutchinson, KS; his grandchildren, SkyeAnne (Tyson) Kline, William 
(Jessica) Felsburg, Cassandra Standley, Jared Standley, Jonah Standley, 
Micah Standley, Nathaniel Standley, and Ryan Luman; and four 
great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. 
 Wendell was preceded in death by his parents, and his youngest brother, David Felsburg.

Helen Mary (Weber) Pfeifer, age 88, 
formerly of Ellis, passed away Thursday, July 16, 2020 at her son’s home
 in Manhattan surrounded by family.&nbsp; She was born August 13, 1931 on the
 family farm in Glenco Township, Trego County, KS to John and Theresa 
(Augustine) Weber, Sr.&nbsp; She married Walter J. Pfeifer on November 8, 
1949 in Ellis.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Helen loved crocheting, reading, 
crossword puzzles, and sewing.&nbsp; She was a farmer, homemaker, and enjoyed
 selling her beautiful crocheted items at craft sales and donating them 
to the church.&nbsp; She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the 
Daughters of Isabella, Ellis.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include four sons, Glen and 
wife Penny, Oakley; Daryl and wife Judy, Anthony; Kevin,&nbsp; Wichita; Randy
 and wife Gina, Manhattan; four daughters, Donna Shepard, Chapman; JoAnn
 Crist and husband Mark, McPherson, Marlene Herrman and husband Kevin, 
Abilene; Jeanette Dreiling and husband Pat, Wichita;&nbsp; daughter-in-law 
Julie, Norman, OK;&nbsp; sister Katie Eberle, Wakeeney; sister-in-law Francis
 Southard, Wichita; sister-in -law Josephine Wiesner, Concordia; 28 
grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents; her husband of 57 years, Walter (Feb.18, 2007); son Leon 
Pfeifer (Aug 3, 2016); daughter Cheryl Turner-Groff (Oct 6, 1986); 
son-in-law Greg Shepard; infant great-grandson Isidore;&nbsp; 
great-granddaughter Aly Kent; two sisters Anna Geist and Thresia 
Aschenbrenner; infant sisters Johanna and Josephine Weber; five brothers
 Ignatius, Mike, Joe, John, and Ambrose Weber.

Phyllis Elaine Higgins, age 85, passed away peacefully at the
 Homestead Memory Care facility in Olathe, Kansas, on Friday morning, 
April 17th, 2020.&nbsp; Born Phyllis Elaine Rein to Edward (Eddie) Rein and Mildred M. McKittrick on December 12th,
 1934 in Ness County, Kansas.&nbsp; She was the oldest of six siblings 
growing up in rural Rush County. She graduated in 1952 from McCracken 
High School.&nbsp; While she was a resident of McCracken, she was an active 
member of the historic St Mary’s Catholic Church.

Though growing up and eventually returning to McCracken, she 
lived several years in Liberal, Kansas raising her family. Upon retuning
 to McCracken, Kansas in 1978, she and her husband, Lester Higgins, 
owned and operated the local Hardware Store.&nbsp; Later in life, she moved 
to Emporia and, eventually, Olathe, Kansas to be closer to family.

She is preceded in death by her husband James Lester Higgins,
 parents Mildred and Eddie Rein, brothers Danny and Donnie Rein, all 
from McCracken, Kansas.&nbsp; She is survived by her sister Sheryl and Benny 
McCaskey of Great Bend, KS and their family, sister Madeline ‘Maddy’ 
Petz of Hutchison, KS and family and brother James ‘Jim’ Rein, also of 
Hutchison, KS.

Her entire life Phyllis enjoyed entertaining and visiting her
 family, especially her 5 children, 7 grandchildren and 4 
great-grandchildren.&nbsp; She is survived by daughter Cindy Cannatella, her 
husband Paul and grandson Paolo of Houston, TX.&nbsp; Daughter Katie Wills 
and husband Marvin of Gatesville, TX.&nbsp; Granddaughters Sarah Knight and 
her husband Kynn, 2 great-grandchildren, Charles and Charlotte of 
Cypress, TX. Granddaughter Rachael Creel and her husband Sam, 2 
great-grandchildren Leon and Stella of Newcastle, TX.&nbsp; Son Kelly Walker,
 his wife Alannah and 3 grandchildren, Davin, Kael and Cullen, of 
Magnolia, TX.&nbsp; Daughter Sabrina Hurt, husband Ron and grandson Samuel of
 Leawood, KS.&nbsp; Daughter Sarena Higgins of New Strawn, KS.&nbsp; Along with 
many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.

Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2020, 
10:00 a.m. at&nbsp; St Mary’s Church, McCracken, Kansas followed by a 
graveside service at the McCracken Cemetery.&nbsp;

Karlos (Karl) Von Feldt, 82, of Topeka, died Sunday, July 12, 2020 at the Midland Hospice House Topeka, Kansas.

He was born August 1, 1937 in Hays, Kansas to Frank G. and Angela (Weigel) Von Feldt.

He attended grade school at Vincent, Kansas and graduated from Victoria High School in 1955.&nbsp;

He married Martha Sue Patzner, of Claflin, Kansas on May 29, 1961 at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, formally known at St. Fidelis Church, commonly known as the Cathedral of the Plains, in Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp;

Karl managed or owned service stations in Victoria, Topeka and Meriden. His first station was a Standard Station in Victoria. &nbsp; Before retiring, he owned and operated Karl’s K-4 Standard in Meriden. Karl was a member of the Kansas National Guard. He is a 4th Degree in the Knights of Columbus. He and his wife Sue are long time parishioners at St. Aloysius Church in Meriden. Karl was an avid gardener and collector of clocks.

Survivors include his wife Sue, three sons, Rick of San Diego, Doug and wife Alyson of Lawrence and Jeff and wife Cindy of Olathe. He is a grandfather to Jacob, Sophia (Horner), Meredith and Aidan, children of Doug and Alyson, and Haley (Cunningham) and Megan (Jacobus), children of Jeff and Cindy. Karl was the youngest of eleven children. Karl is survived by one sister, Charlotte Sanders of Wichita, KS; two sisters-in-law, Joan Von Feldt, Victoria, KS; and Dorothy Von Feldt, Palco, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, Winifreda Beckwith, Isabelle Standley, Alma Sherlock, Mabel Hayes and Mary Louise Dreiling, two brothers, Art and Leo and two infant brothers, Ernest and Charles. &nbsp;

Services were at 11:00 am Thursday, July 16 at St. Aloysius Church in Meriden.&nbsp; A private family inurnment will be at the St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas at a later date.

John H. Herrmann, 64, died Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

He was born August 21, 1955 at Spearville, the son of George A. and 
Rita Pauline (Vogel) Herrmann.&nbsp; He attended schools in Dodge City, 
graduated high school from Thomas More Prep in Hays and attended Fort&nbsp; Hays State University.&nbsp; He had a love for the cattle business and was a 
rancher and farmer all of his life.&nbsp; He enjoyed horses, roping and the 
ranches in New Mexico.&nbsp; He was a generous supporter of many 
organizations especially ones that involved youth.&nbsp; He also enjoyed 
competitive games.

He was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge City and Knights of Columbus Council 3218, Jetmore.

Survivors include: his brothers and sister, Ronnie and wife Dina, 
Ford, Tom and wife Kay, Sherman, Texas, David and companion Lisa Thummel
 Schriver, El Paso, Texas, Danny and wife Colleen, Dodge City and Mary 
Michelle Jantz and husband Keith, Ennis, Texas; many nephews and nieces 
that he loved; and aunts and uncle, Henrietta Schulte, Ft. Collins, 
Colorado, Carol Sue Vogel, Wichita, Liz Loibl, Dodge City and Clara 
Schmitt and husband Charles, Kinsley and Betty Herrmann, Lakin.

Phillipsburg resident Sandra K. Portenier passed away Wednesday, July 15th at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg at the age of 80.

Sandra was born January 21, 1940, in Wray, Colorado.

She was united in marriage to Dean Portenier on January 3rd, 1957, in Great Bend, KS.&nbsp; He preceded her in death in 2005.

Survivors include her three daughters, Debra Cox of Palmyra, NE, 
Diane R. Boyd and husband &nbsp;Brent of Speed and Jeanette Pakkebier of 
Phillipsburg; her son, Kent Portenier and wife Tamra of Kirwin; two 
sisters Delores Hansen and husband Kenny of Chapell, NE and Barb 
Simmerman and husband Scot of Scotts Bluff, NE; 6 grandchildren; and 7 
great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 21st,

Carol J. Schaben, 79, &nbsp;passed away peacefully on June 25, 2020, at Benton House of Lenexa which was her home since 2017.&nbsp;

Carol was born September 11, 1940, in Bison, KS.&nbsp; She was the first 
of three children born to John and Monica Unrein.&nbsp; Carol was a 1958 
graduate of LaCrosse High School.

Carol spent her first 19 years in LaCrosse, KS enjoying a very large 
and extended family.&nbsp; At 19 years old Carol married Tommy Schaben of 
Bazine Kansas.&nbsp; They settled in Independence Missouri and continued to 
farm in Bazine Kansas on the weekends.&nbsp;

Carol worked in the commercial insurance industry for Chubb Insurance
 for 38 years.&nbsp; She began her career as an audit clerk and retired as an
 Operations Service Manager. Carol was very active in the Greater Kansas
 City Insurance Association for many years and was named Insurance Woman
 of The Year in 1989.

After retiring from Chubb Insurance in 1998, Carol began a second 
career as the Business Manager for Nativity of Mary Catholic Parish and 
Grade School in Independence, MO for several years. She was a member of 
Nativity of Mary Catholic Church and served as a Eucharistic minister 
for many years.

Carol also helped found the Jackson County Free Health Clinic of 
Independence MO in 2000. Carol coordinated volunteer doctors, nurses, 
pharmacists and support staff. The Clinic served economically 
disadvantaged individuals in Independence, MO with medical and 
prescription needs every week.

Carol is survived by her daughter &amp; son in law, Patti &amp; Mike 
Bryant, Lenexa, KS and grandson &amp; wife, Brent &amp; Danielle 
Haskell, Ansonia, OH.

A committal&nbsp;service will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2020, 10:00 a.m. at the Bazine Cemetery.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Brian T. Unrein, 62, McKinney, Texas, died Monday, January 20, 2020 in McKinney.

He was born August 24, 1957 in Hays, 
the son of Clement and Viola (Enslinger) Unrein. &nbsp;He was a 1975 graduate
 of Thomas More Prep-Marian High School. &nbsp;On March 29, 1986 he was 
united in marriage to Diana Davis in San Diego, CA. She passed away on 
May 17, 2020 from kidney failure in Lewisville, Texas. &nbsp;Brian was an 
engineer for Inter-Tel in California and Texas. &nbsp;He was a United States 
Marine Corps veteran, serving from 1975 to 1978.

Survivors include two sons; Matthew T. 
Unrein and wife Brittany of Lewisville, TX and Jason M. Unrein of 
Sherman, TX, his parents; Clement and Viola Unrein of Hays, two 
brothers; Bruce Unrein and wife Christine of Sierra Vista, AZ and Brad 
Unrein and wife Lisa of Hays, two sisters; Brenda Nordling of Omaha, NE 
and Bonnie Gasaway and husband Rick of Overland Park, KS, and numerous 
nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son; 
Austin, his father-in-law and mother-in-law; John I. and Victorine 
(Vicki) Davis, and his grandparents; Peter and Agatha (Leikam) Unrein 
and John P. and Magdalene (Rohleder) Enslinger.

To celebrate Brian’s life, the family 
will receive friends from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon on Saturday, July 
25, 2020 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; Memorials are suggested
