Robert Ryan Svoboda was born June 22, 1970 in Sioux City, Iowa to Al and
 Barbara (Rosemeyer) Svoboda. He passed away on January 28, 2021 in 
Oberlin, KS at the age of 50 after one week of COVID with underlying 
health conditions.
 Robert grew up in Sioux City. He married Shirly Rowell on June 23, 
1991 on the Queen Mary ship in California. He enjoyed playing games on 
his phone, work with his hands in the tile and construction industry.
 He is survived by wife Shirly Svoboda of Oberlin, KS; son, Anthony 
Svoboda of Oberlin, KS; sister, Michelle Strong of Lincoln, NE and Lori 
Hackney of Harris, IA; mother, Barbara Rosemeyer of Sioux City, IA; 
several nieces and nephews and his dogs Princeton and Rebel. He was 
preceded in death by father, Alfred Svoboda; stepfather, Rod Rosemeyer; 
brother, Tony Boltz; mother-in-law, Liz Rowell; and an uncle and all 
grandparents.
 Now pain free and at peace. Always in our hearts and prayers, forever missed.

Gloria Hagen, age 64 of Hays, Kansas 
passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at Hays Medical Center. Gloria
 was born on October 24, 1956 to Oscar and Betty (Sparks) Hagen. She 
attended schools in Ellis including a couple of early years at Star 
School, which was a country school. She also went to Hutchinson 
Community College.&nbsp;

Gloria held long-term jobs, including 
Klines, Stage and most recently Walmart. As a member of the Ellis VFW 
Auxiliary. After her mother passed away she took over putting out 
Auxiliary flags on Memorial Day weekend for members who had passed away.
 Gloria was a die-hard animal lover. There were times when driving out 
in the country, she would pull over and move a turtle to the side of the
 road so it would not get hit.

Gloria is survived by brothers Rex 
Hagen of Ellis and Ralph Sparks of Hays; sisters, Ellen Berry and Annys 
Pfannenstiel both of Hays; nephews, Justin Berry and Russell Berry both 
of Colby, Jody Hagen (Debbie) of Hays; niece, Laurel Sparks Beebe of 
Washington State; great nephew, Krystian Hagen; great nieces, Mykaela 
Hagen, Annzlee Berry, Tristan Jay, and Maigen Jay.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a nephew, Benjamin Sparks and a brother-in-law Danny Pfannenstiel.

Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday February 9, 2021 at Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery Ellis. Services will be livestreamed <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Christ-Lutheran-Church-111688785534530">HERE</a>.&nbsp; Visitation will be Tuesday 9:30 AM until service time at the church.&nbsp;

Mary Louise (Romey) Wolf, 80, Hays, died Saturday, February 6, 2021 at HaysMed.

She was born September 28, 1940 in 
Ellis, the daughter of Tony and Marcella (Copp) Romey.&nbsp; In 1959 she 
graduated from Ellis High School.&nbsp; On June 18, 1960 she was united in 
marriage to Leon Wolf at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis, and they 
celebrated 60 years of marriage.&nbsp; She was a housewife and loved being a 
daycare provider, especially when caring for her grandchildren and 
extended family.&nbsp; Mary was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, a 
proud Ellis Railer and KC Royals fan, liked bowling, and was a great 
supporter of her grandchildren and loved attending all of their sporting
 events and activities.

Survivors include her husband Leon of 
Hays, four daughters: Kim Campbell and Pam Gaschler and husband Terry, 
all of Hays, Sherri Mong and husband Jerry of Las Vegas, NV, and Janelle
 Williams and husband Terry of Russell, a sister: Vickie Weber of Ellis,
 12 grandchildren: Ashley Lang, Alexis, Allison, and Adam Campbell, 
Nicki Younger, Natalie Reuter, Taryn Graham, Sierra Diehl, Chelsea and 
Hailey Mong, Sagan Schultz and Tyler Williams, and nine great 
grandchildren: Anthony, Hunter, and Elyse Lang, Aleigha Reuter, Carson 
and Lucas Younger, and Trinity, Laylah, and Kysen Graham.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers: Bob, Kenneth, and Luke Romey.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Thursday, February 11, 2021 at St. Joseph Catholic Church 
with Fr. Brian Lager officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in St. Anthony 
Cemetery, Schoenchen.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on 
Wednesday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Thursday, all at Hays Memorial

Ruby Mae Atkinson, 75, of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, January 29, 2021, at her home in Russell.

Ruby was born on November 19, 1945, to Mrs Wanda (Bean) Pickering in Polk County, Missouri.

She is survived by her children son Robert Atkinson of Russell, 
Kansas; daughters Barbara Ortiz of Oxnard, California and &nbsp;Rita Cordova 
of Colorado; 2 granddaughters, 5 grandsons, 5 great grand kids; Sisters 
Liz Simmons of Russell, Kansas, Vickie Goodwillie of Eugene, Oregon and 
Debbie Milam and Mary Hulett both of Russell, Kansas and one brother Tom
 Pickering of Mobile, Alabama.

Raymond Lee Meis, died February 5, 2021, he was born March 22, 1932, 
at home to parents Leo and Seraphine (Stocklein) Meis of Ness City the 
farmhouse was located 4.5 miles west and 1.5 miles south of Ness City, 
he was the fourth child born in a two-room house.

Ray graduated from Ness City High School class of 1950, he went into 
the Air Force in 1951, after basic training he was stationed in Naknek, 
Alaska, after serving his four years he was discharged in 1955 at March 
Air Force Base in CA.

Ray secured employment with Western Electric/AT&amp;T/Lucent 
Technology in CA.&nbsp; Eventually, Ray met Vivian Hatle, they were married 
on September 9, 1957, at Sacred Heart Church in Ness City. Ray and 
Vivian established residence in Riverside, CA of the union came Thomas 
Michael Meis in 1964 and Tamara Meis in 1969. Unfortunately, that 
marriage ended in 1973.

Ray took early retirement from Lucent Technology and started building
 a beautiful home in Romoland, CA, he then started collecting antique 
tractors, restoring them to their original condition, this would become a
 passion for Ray. In all Ray accumulated a full set of Farmall tractors 
and a full set of styled John Deer tractors that he would take to 
antique tractor shows.&nbsp; While attending a show in Vista, CA he met Sandy
 Malone and after a five-year courtship, they married on January 1, 
1998, in Tombstone, AZ, the town too tough to die. Ray and Sandy enjoyed
 going to tractor shows, farming, waltzes, dancing the polka, and 
two-step country-western music. Ray's favorite polka band was The 
Country Dutchman. Ray was really happy when he was out on the road 
traveling, especially in the motor home.

Ray is survived by his wife of 23 years Sandy Meis, son Thomas 
Michael (Tamber) Meis; daughter Tamara (Jeremy) Kerns; stepdaughter 
Michelle Malone, two granddaughters Briana (Jim) Bobrik and Madisyn 
Kerns; grandson Jake Covin; two step-grandchildren and one 
great-great-granddaughter, Addison Bobrik; brothers Melvin Meis, Ness 
City, Donald (Carole) Meis, Mt. Pleasant, SC, Gerald Meis, Orangevale, 
CA, and Arlin Meis, Boulder, CO; sisters Julie (Boyd) Beutler, Ness 
City, Dianne Klaus, Ness City, and Delores (Don) Mussatto, Windsor, CA.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Seraphine Meis; 
sisters Mary Alice and Cyrilla Srenzel; brother Cecil, Dennis, and 
Willard Meis.

Interment will take place at WaKeeney Veterans Cemetery.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date in warmer weather.

Janet Louise Rorick was born April 19, 1949, in San Francisco, California
 to Albert and Lina (Peters) Wilkerson. She passed away February 5, 2021,&nbsp; at the Cheyenne County Village in St. Francis, Kansas, at the age of 71.

Janet moved around a lot due to her father serving in the Navy and 
was a 1967 Ventura High School graduate. She then went on to receive her
 Associate’s Degree. Janet married James Rorick, Jr. on November 4, 
1968 in Point Mugu, California. They also moved around a lot due to 
James serving in the Navy. Janet worked as a nurse in a nursing home. 
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oberlin. In her 
spare time, she enjoyed sewing, crafts, and doing home repairs. 
 Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Lina; 
husband, James; daughter, Jeanine Rorick and sister, Anne Wilkerson. She
 is survived by her sons, James (Leah) Rorick of Denver, CO and Jonathon
 Rorick of Goodland, KS; daughter, Jennifer (Anthony) Zillinger of 
Oberlin, KS; sisters, Karen Yarian of Herndon, KS, Linda (Rodney) Hill 
of Clifton, CO and Vera Banford of Oberlin, KS; grandchildren: Raquel, 
Adam, A. J., Jenavive, and Jon.

Janet Louise Rorick

Brent Alex Pinnick, 21, left this world all too soon on February 2, 
2021, in Great Bend. Brent was born January 20, 2000, in Wichita the son
 of Mark and Jamie (Hazen) Pinnick

Brent spent his adolescent years in Protection and high school years 
in Hoisington graduating in 2018. During high school he worked for local
 farmers and Fur Bearers. He was a member of the Kansas Dodge Ram Club. 
He loved the outdoors and spent numerous hours fishing and hunting. His 
last occupation was with Watco as a certified rigger which in Brent’s 
heart was the most valuable job ever and spoke highly of his co-workers 
to his family. His family was of great importance to him and he never 
missed a chance to gather for reunions or help out in a time of need. 
One of Brent’s most treasured assets in life was having his own language
 he spoke with family and close friends. Many family “sayings” have 
originated with Brent’s unique language. Brent will be missed by many, 
as he was a loyal friend and family member.

Survivors include mother Jamie (Scott) Fleming of Hoisington; 
brothers T.J. (Karista) Harvey and children Hayes and Koy of Coldwater, 
Matthew (Brandy) Fleming of Colorado; sisters Toni (Henry) Dennis of 
Clay Center and Mariah Fleming of Hoisington, Miranda Perry of 
Coldwater, and Angela (Kirk) Esplund of Bucklin; grandmothers Ferrel 
(Allen) Davis of Coldwater and Johnita (Terry) Nystrom of Lewis; 
companion McKaylee Batman of Cimarron; aunts Taunya (Larry) Matthews of 
Edmond, Okla, Sharlyn (Dan) Jackson of Coldwater, Shelley (Arlin) Wadel 
of Greensburg; uncle Sid (Sarah) Fleming of Paola. Numerous nieces, 
nephews and cousins.

Memorial graveside service will be 1:00 p.m. Sunday February 7, 2021,
 at Crown Hill Cemetery in Coldwater. In lieu of flowers, memorials may

in Hoisington graduating in 2018. During high school he worked for local
 farmers and Fur Bearers. He was a member of the Kansas Dodge Ram Club. 
He loved the outdoors and spent numerous hours fishing and hunting. His 
last occupation was with Watco as a certified rigger which in Brent’s 
heart was the most valuable job ever and spoke highly of his co-workers 
to his family. His family was of great importance to him and he never 
missed a chance to gather for reunions or help out in a time of need. 
One of Brent’s most treasured assets in life was having his own language
 he spoke with family and close friends. Many family “sayings” have 
originated with Brent’s unique language. Brent will be missed by many, 
as he was a loyal friend and family member.Survivors include mother Jamie (Scott) Fleming of Hoisington; 
brothers T.J. (Karista) Harvey and children Hayes and Koy of Coldwater, 
Matthew (Brandy) Fleming of Colorado; sisters Toni (Henry) Dennis of

Edmond, Okla, Sharlyn (Dan) Jackson of Coldwater, Shelley (Arlin) Wadel

Imelda Jane “Millie” (Baker) Smith, age 86, passed away on Friday, 
February 5, 2021, at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; 
Imelda was born on September 6, 1934, on the Baker family homestead 
north of Marienthal, Kansas to Anthony Baker and Caecilia (Baier) 
Baker.&nbsp; She grew up on the family farm north of Marienthal.

Millie married Gerald Joseph Smith on June 24, 1953, at St. Mary's 
Catholic Church in Marienthal, Kansas.&nbsp; She was a lifetime resident of 
Marienthal, Kansas.&nbsp; Millie was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing, 
quilting, and gardening.&nbsp; She was a member of St. Mary’s Altar Society 
of Marienthal and was a devout Catholic.

Survivors include her three daughters; Sharry (Clem) Nelson of 
Johnson, Kathy (Dale) Owings of Lawrence and Ruth (Bill) Hovey of 
Olathe; three sons, Earl (Deb) Smith of Marienthal, Don (Liz) Smith of 
Scott City, and Ernie (Christi) Smith of Scott City; one sister, Inella 
Scheffe; 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gerald, an&nbsp;infant son 
Joseph, her parents, and siblings Bernadine Pahls, Marguerite Zellner, 
Florence Zellner, Mary Ann Winter, Louis Baker, Elizabeth Geyer, Joseph 
Baker, Celine Wimmer, and Bernard Baker.

Donald Eugene Spreier died February 5, 2021, at his home in Larned. He
 was born September 6, 1934, to Fred and Lucille Spreier in Larned, KS. 
Raised on a farm in Pawnee County. 

Graduated from Larned High School, 
married his high school sweetheart Ellen Arline Bradley. Started his 
career as an auto mechanic and soon became known as the “Best mechanic 
in town”, fixing it right the first time. Four children were soon born 
Debra Diana, Cathleen Jeanette, Brenda Joann, and Alan Dale. After 
working several years at two General Motors dealerships he opened his 
own business as an Amoco service station which he operated for twenty 
years. 

During that time, he became owner of a total of three full service
 stations, one in Great Bend and two in Larned. Don enjoyed a versatile 
lifestyle, building and driving open wheel race cars, being Western 
Kansas Modified Champion and riding his touring motorcycle as well as 
later becoming a commercial hot air balloon pilot. Golf was always part 
of his life. He served on the Board of Directors of the Larned County 
Club, Past President of Kiwanis, Past President of Larned Area Chamber 
of Commerce. Was a member of Ft. Larned Arms Association and served on 
the board of directors of Sunrise. Was a member of the Amoco Dealer 
Advisory board. Don was a member of the First Christian Church Larned. 
He was preceded in death by son Alan Dale, Sister Eleanor Peterson, and 
his parents.

He is survived by his wife Arline, daughters Debra Smith, Larned, 
Cathleen (Steve) Boyd, Great Bend, and Brenda (Mike) Rump, Mission, KS. A
 brother Joe, Seattle, sister Shirlene Ladd, Phoenix, AZ, nine 
grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren and four great-great 
grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be given to Pawnee County Humane Society in care of Beckwith Mortuary, PO Box 477, Larned, KS 67550.

Robert Wayne Durant

Mary Therese Landreth, 89, passed away February 3, 2021, at Hospice 
House of Hutchinson. She was born October 12, 1931, at Ellinwood, to 
Harry &amp; Esther (Schartz) Kimpler. She married Ray Landreth at Sts. 
Peter &amp; Paul Catholic Church in rural Ellinwood. He died in 2000.

Growing up in Ellinwood, living most of her adult life in the Wichita
 area. Mary joined the Sisters of Precious Heart after high school and 
practiced for 20 years. She also taught special education classes at 
Cowley College and Newman University in the Wichita area for many years.
 Mary was a member of the Catholic Church of the Magdalen in Wichita and
 St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ellinwood. She loved children, playing 
slots, going to the Heritage, and fishing.

Survivors include her seven nieces and nephews, four Godchildren.&nbsp; 
&nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray Landreth; a 
brother, Bill Kimpler; and a sister, Henrietta Casey.

Visitation will be February 8, 2021 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph 
Catholic Church, a Rosary will be held at 11:00 a.m., with Mass of 
Christian Burial to follow with Father Terrance Klein presiding. 
Interment will be in the Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery in Ellinwood. 
Memorials are designated to St. Joseph Catholic School, in care of

Darrell Thrasher passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 2021, at the 
Wilson Care and Rehabilitation Center in Wilson, KS, at the age of 84. 
Darrell was born to Jean and Dorothy (McGee) Thrasher in Hutchinson, KS 
on March 6, 1936. On February 2, 1969, Darrell was united in marriage to
 Jeannie (Meador) Thrasher, and to this union Shawn, Pat, and Jennifer 
were born.
 Darrell was raised primarily in Arlington, KS. He graduated from 
Arlington High School with the Class of 1954. He continued his education
 at Hutchinson Community College for 2 years, then attended Emporia 
State Teachers College where he obtained his teaching certificate and a 
Master’s Degree. In 1958 he began his teaching career in Wilson. In 
1973 his family moved to Harper, KS where he taught Jr. High Math for 4 
years. He then moved back to Wilson where he taught any and all classes 
and coached multiple sports. He retired in 1998 from teaching but 
decided to work part-time at the school until his official retirement in
 2012. In 1991, he took the job of City Municipal Judge in Wilson, 
serving almost 29 years and having to retire in 2020. Outside of his 
passion for teaching, he enjoyed fishing and camping at the lake with 
his family and friends, he enjoyed nature, taking care of his plants, 
and painting houses in the summertime. Darrell enjoyed animals too, 
especially his dog Sammi. Darrell belonged to the United Methodist 
Church and was a part of the Wilson and Ellsworth Masons for many years 
as well as the Wilson Lions Club.
 As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “The function of education is to 
teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence 
plus character – that is the goal of true education.” Mr. Thrasher left a
 permanent mark on his students and athletes with his kindness, 
patience, and guidance.
 He is survived by his wife, Jeannie Thrasher of the home; children, 
Shawn (Scott Farthing) Thrasher of Anaheim, CA, Pat Thrasher of Wilson, 
KS, and Jennifer (Bruce) Thomas of Silver Lake, KS; brothers, Don 
Thrasher of Jetmore, KS, Dean (Becky) Thrasher of St. John, KS, and 
David (Ruth) Thrasher of Inman, KS; five grandchildren, McKenzie 
(Hunter) Ingham, Kami Thrasher, Taegan Thrasher, Kaiden Thomas, and 
Tyler Thomas; and one great-grandchild, Granger Ingham with another on 
the way. Many nieces and nephews and cousins.

Stecklein and Catherine (Wasinger) Stecklein in Hays. She attended Hays High School and on February 6th, 1965 she married the love of her life Ronald J. Gottschalk in Hays. Theresa lived her entire life in Hays, Ks. living for many years in her “Little Cottage” after the passing of her husband Ronald Gottschalk on January 8th, 1991. She worked several years at Travenol and Enersys until opening her own cleaning business. She lived her life for her 3 boys, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchild. She loved her computer, crafts, and slot machines and talking on the phone to her children and grandchildren. She had a very kind, ornery spirit about her. She loved hanging with her sisters and going shopping, church, and out to eat. You could pick up the phone or stop in anytime and she would always have a smile on her face, a giggle and a laugh. We will miss her genuine kind-hearted spirit very much. Irene Thresea Ann (Soukup) Healey, 95, of Perryton, Tx completed her life journey on Tuesday, February 2, 2021. 
 Irene was born on October 15, 1925 to Frank Joseph and Albina 
Catherine (Tymer) Soukup on the family farm near Wilson, Ks. The family 
worked hard to sustain farm life, and Irene had many stories to tell 
about her wonderful childhood. She attended Pleasant Valley country 
school. In the summers, she would help other farm families with cooking 
and caring for children, especially during harvest season. Her father, 
Frank, not only farmed, but he also played the concertina in a polka 
band. Weekends were filled with dancing. At one of these dances, Irene 
met the love of her life, James Patrick Healey. James was also a Wilson 
native and newly returned from serving in Europe during World War II. On
 October 28, 1947, Irene and James were married at the Saint Bernard 
Catholic Church in Ellsworth, Ks. 
 Together they raised three children, Juliana Louise Healey Sursa, 
James Patrick Healey II, and Timothy Joseph Healey. The family resided 
in Wilson, Ks but in 1958, they moved to Perryton, Tx. Perryton remained
 Irene’s home for the remainder of her life. She was a member of the 
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and in her younger days, she was a
 member of the Alter Society. She also made many pies for church 
functions.
 Irene was a loving wife and mother. She was an excellent cook and 
homemaker. She loved her beautiful flower gardens, and at each home in 
which she lived, she always had a cactus garden. Her greatest pride was 
her family, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
 She joins her husband, James, of 58 years; her parents, Frank and 
Albina; two sisters, Helen Mickulecky and Leona Scantland; along with 
numerous relatives and friends who are in God’s home.
 Surviving Irene are her children, Juliana and Rick Sursa of 
Tucumcari, NM, James Healey of Spearman, Tx and Timothy and Tina Healey 
of Topeka, Ks. She is survived by nine loving grandchildren; Ronald and 
Lara Sursa, Summer and Toby Smith, Katherine Sursa, Curtis and Alyssa 
Sursa, James P. Healey III and Heather, Kimberley and Brian Edwards, and
 Ashley and Jessie Burkhalter. Irene has fourteen great-grandchildren 
and two lovely former daughters-in-law, Delores Healey and Rhonda 
Shafer. Irene is also survived by her sister, Edna Buehler of Wilson, Ks
 and her brother, Victor and Sharen Soukup of Garden City, Ks; along 
with numerous nieces and nephews.

Debra Lee (Auker) Tavis went home to the Lord joining her mama and 
daddy, Ivan LeRoy and Marian Lydia (James) Auker. Deb passed in the 
early morning of January 31, 2021 at her home due to complications of 
heart failure, she was 65. 
 Debba, as she was known to those close to her, was born in Denver, 
Colorado on July 14, 1955. She attended schools in Westminster and 
Lakewood and graduated in 1973 from Jefferson High School in Edgewater, 
Colorado. She moved to her ancestral hometown of Norcatur, Kansas in the
 mid 1990’s. She proudly became a journeyman electrician and traveled 
the United States alongside her husband Scott for their trade and making
 many memories. Debra and Scott were married on June 26, 1999 in 
Bowling Green, KY. She loved listening to country music, especially 
Travis Tritt. Deb loved to grow flowers, go fishing and she loved her K9
 companions, Pepper and Bella. More recently, she enjoyed riding her 
golf cart around town taking pictures, fulfilling her love of 
photography, with Bella always by her side. She was a loving wife, 
mother, and grandmother.
 Debra was preceded in death by her parents Ivan and Marian. She is 
survived by her husband, Scott Tavis; son, JL Myers; daughter, Carly 
Myers; stepson, Derek Tavis; brothers, Patrick Auker and wife Kelly and 
Ted Auker and wife Colleen; sister, Stella Hawkins and her beloved 
grandchildren, Dominick and Madison Tavis.

Manuel Alejandro Castillo, 20, passed away February 3, 2021, at the 
University Of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus. He was born 
April 3, 2000, at Baton Rouge, La., to Jesus and Nora (Espino) Castillo.

A Great Bend resident, Manuel was a current welding student at Tulsa 
Welding School. He enjoyed football, basketball, painting and cooking.

Survivors include, his parents, Jesus and Nora Castillo of the home; 
three sisters, Vaneza Castillo and Nora Castillo, both of Great Bend, 
and Arais Castillo of Hays; a niece, Alyla Perez; and two nephews, Josue
 Castillo and Angel Solis. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, 
Narcizo Castillo.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday, 
February 8, 2021 at Bryant Funeral Home, with Vigil service at 7:00 p.m.

Allan “Dean” Milner, son of Frank Milner and Neva (Boman) Milner was 
born January 31, 1943 at Belleville, Kansas and passed away on February 
1, 2021 at the Republic County Hospital, Belleville, Kansas at the age 
of 78.

He graduated from Scandia High School and Fort Hays State 
University.&nbsp; He served with the U.S. Air Force from January 6, 1964 to 
July 6, 1967.&nbsp; He was an Agronomist and worked for Kansas State 
University.

He loved life, friends, family and spending time outdoors, 
fishing, hunting and playing golf.&nbsp; He loved the state of Kansas and 
Kansas State University, living in Scandia and spending time talking and
 visiting with all his friends in town.

He was a member of the Buffalo Park Golf Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Neva Milner, two brothers, Emil and Richard.

He is survived by one sister, Marilyn Schilling of Belleville, KS, nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Graveside services will be held Ten AM, Saturday, February 6, 
2021, Riverview Cemetery, Scandia, Kansas, conducted by Pastor Kathy

Allan 'Dean' Milner

Doris A. King, age 89, died Thursday, February 4, 2021, at Satanta Long 
Term Care Unit in Satanta, Kansas. She was born December 16, 1931, in 
Panhandle, Texas, the daughter of James Robert Earl and Audrey Olean 
(Cox) Spain. 
Doris grew up in Panhandle, Texas. She then moved with her family to 
Dallas, Texas, and graduated from Oak Cliff High School in 1949. She 
met Claude L. King in Satanta, Kansas, her sophomore year in high 
school, and married him on September 24, 1949, in Dallas. They moved to
 Grant County, Kansas, and farmed until they moved to town in 1998. 
Doris was a lifetime member of Eastern Star #471, American Legion 
Auxiliary, East Grant Study Club, and the First United Methodist Church 
in Ulysses. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, and yard work in general. 
She could also be found crocheting, counted cross stitch, needle point, 
embroidering, and jigsaw and crossword puzzles. Doris also enjoyed 
attending Monday Study Club, and was on a ladies and couples bowling 
teams. 
Doris is survived by her daughter, Jerrie Brooks and husband Jake of 
Scott City; sister, Connie Andrews and husband Bill of Grapevine, Texas;
 two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. 
Doris is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Claude in 2000; 
daughter, Jolynn Wood; son, James (Jim) Nolan King; and three siblings, 
Betty Lou Garmin, Bob Spain and Ron Spain. 
Funeral service will be Monday, February 8, 2021, at 11:00 AM at Garnand

Doris A. King

Robert “Bob” Joseph Weis, 72, of Hoxie, Kansas passed away surrounded by
 his loved ones Friday, January 15, 2021, at the Sheridan County Long 
Term Care in Hoxie after a brave battle with cancer.  He was born in 
Colby, Kansas, January 29, 1948, to Raymond and Germaine (Kruse) Weis the
 third of nine children. 

He grew up on the farm and attended Leoville 
Grade and High School graduating with the class of 1965. After high 
school, he attended Northwest Kansas Technical School where he earned a 
certificate as a Diesel Mechanic. Following his graduation from 
Technical School, he entered the United States Army. After serving his 
country, Bob met the love of his life Verna “Jane” Hake. They were 
married May 20, 1972, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Colby, 
Kansas. They moved to Hoxie where they have made their home for 
forty-nine years and raised their three children Chris, Melissa and 
Dennis. 
 Bob worked for Tebo Implement for a short while before going to 
Taylor Implement where he spent most of his career as a Diesel Mechanic 
retiring seven years ago. He did work for Archie Moss helping with 
farming as well as helping his brother with harvest. Bob worked hard, 
but when he could he enjoyed hunting, fishing and tinkering in his 
garage. He especially liked pheasant hunting with his son, Dennis. 
Camping and traveling with his Jane and the family was one of his most 
favorite activities. Bob and Jane had the opportunity to travel and 
visit many interesting places. Top of the list for Bob was to be with 
and spend time with his loving wife and soulmate, Jane. 
 Bob is survived by his wife, Jane of Hoxie, Kansas; son, Dennis 
Weis (Tami) of Parker, Colorado; daughters, Chris Breinig (Steve) of 
Hays, Kansas and Melissa Weis (Cindy) of DeLeon, Texas; mother, Germaine
 Weis of Colby, Kansas; brothers, Norbert Weis of Hoxie, Kansas and 
Frank Weis (Ester) of Akron, Colorado; sisters, Dolores Mauck (Roger) of
 Hoxie, Kansas, Jane Fleming (Jim) of Lindsborg, Kansas, Joan Long 
(Carl) of Missouri, Jean Cech (Joe) of Goodland, Kansas, and Rose Weis 
of Round Rock, Texas; and grandchildren, Jordan Breinig and Riley Weis.
 He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Weis, brother, Steve Weis; and granddaughter, Alyssa Haddock.

 Bob was a quiet, caring and loving man. He leaves a family who 
dearly loved him as he did them. The cherished memories of Bob will

 </figure>Robert “Bob” Joseph Weis, 72, of Hoxie, Kansas passed away surrounded by
 his loved ones Friday, January 15, 2021, at the Sheridan County Long 
Term Care in Hoxie after a brave battle with cancer. He was born in 
Colby, Kansas, January 29, 1948, to Raymond and Germaine (Kruse) Weis the
 third of nine children. He grew up on the farm and attended Leoville 
Grade and High School graduating with the class of 1965. After high 
school, he attended Northwest Kansas Technical School where he earned a 
certificate as a Diesel Mechanic. Following his graduation from 
Technical School, he entered the United States Army. After serving his 
country, Bob met the love of his life Verna “Jane” Hake. They were 
married May 20, 1972, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Colby, 
Kansas. They moved to Hoxie where they have made their home for 
forty-nine years and raised their three children Chris, Melissa and 
Dennis. 
 Bob worked for Tebo Implement for a short while before going to 
Taylor Implement where he spent most of his career as a Diesel Mechanic 
retiring seven years ago. He did work for Archie Moss helping with 
farming as well as helping his brother with harvest. Bob worked hard, 
but when he could he enjoyed hunting, fishing and tinkering in his 
garage. He especially liked pheasant hunting with his son, Dennis. 
Camping and traveling with his Jane and the family was one of his most 
favorite activities. Bob and Jane had the opportunity to travel and 
visit many interesting places. Top of the list for Bob was to be with 
and spend time with his loving wife and soulmate, Jane. 
 Bob is survived by his wife, Jane of Hoxie, Kansas; son, Dennis 
Weis (Tami) of Parker, Colorado; daughters, Chris Breinig (Steve) of 
Hays, Kansas and Melissa Weis (Cindy) of DeLeon, Texas; mother, Germaine
 Weis of Colby, Kansas; brothers, Norbert Weis of Hoxie, Kansas and 
Frank Weis (Ester) of Akron, Colorado; sisters, Dolores Mauck (Roger) of
 Hoxie, Kansas, Jane Fleming (Jim) of Lindsborg, Kansas, Joan Long 
(Carl) of Missouri, Jean Cech (Joe) of Goodland, Kansas, and Rose Weis 
of Round Rock, Texas; and grandchildren, Jordan Breinig and Riley Weis.
 He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Weis, brother, Steve Weis; and granddaughter, Alyssa Haddock.
 A Celebration of Life Service is planned for Saturday, February 6, 
2021, 10:30 A.M. at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, Hoxie, Kansas. A 
Visitation and Vigil/Rosary Service will be held on Friday, February 5, 
2021, with the visitation from 1:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., and 
Vigil/Rosary starting at 7:00 P.M. all at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral

Cecil Joseph Miller, 84, former Executive Vice President of Manufacturing at Beechcraft, died Monday, February 1, 2021. Private Memorial Rosary and Service at Church of the Magdalen. 

Cecil graduated from St. Joseph Military Academy (now Thomas More Prep) and was an alumni of Wichita State University where he played football for one year. He was a lifelong Shocker basketball fan. He was also a HAM radio hobbyist. 

Preceded in death by his parents, Adam and Alvina Miller; brother, Arthur A. Miller; sister, Amelia Meis; daughter, Jacque Price. 

Survived by his wife, Gloria Joan Miller; daughter, Jenifer (Dwight) Jones of Colorado Springs, CO; son, Jeff (Dottie) Miller of Orange City, IA; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; sister, Alvina Miller, O.P. of Great Bend, KS; sister-in-law, Maria Miller of Longview, TX; son-in-law, Shaun Price.

JoAnn A. (Lamont) Caldwell, 70, passed away in Wichita, KS on Jan. 
29, 2021. Born on Jan. 5th, 1951 in Smith Center, KS she was the 
daughter of Cecil and Carmen (Waters) Lamont. JoAnn grew up on a farm in
 Kensington, KS later graduating from HS in 1969. She later graduated 
from Cloud Co. College in Concordia, KS with a BS in Nursing. Mrs. 
Caldwell went on to work 40 years as a nurse and caregiver in 
Phillipsburg, Smith Center, &amp; Hays. She married Curtis Caldwell on 
Aug. 24th, 1978 in Kensington, KS.&nbsp;

Survivors include daughters, Samantha Diaz, Great Bend, KS, Heidi 
Freeman (Chester), Ellinwood, KS, Mackenzie Flinn (Stan), Hays, KS; 
brothers, Dennis Lamont (Elaine) and Steven Lamont (Deb); sisters, 
Connie Pennington (Robert) and Mary Smith. Other survivors include 9 
grandchildren, 2&nbsp;great-grandchildren, and 3 step-grandchildren. JoAnn 
was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Caldwell, her parents, and 
niece.&nbsp;

Funeral service will be 3 PM, Fri., Feb. 5th&nbsp;at Minnis Chapel in 
Ellinwood, KS. Interment will take place in Cedar, KS at a later date.

JoAnn A. (Lamont) Caldwell

Agnes Marie Hernandez of Scott City, 59, died February 2, 2021, in Hays, 
Kansas. She was born May 11, 1961 in Satanta, Kansas, the daughter of 
Walter and Madelyn (Woodson) Hoffman. 
Agnes was born in Satanta, grew up in Garden City, and most recently 
resided in Scott City. She had worked as a waitress at various 
restaurants in Southwest Kansas. She married Paulo Hernandez in Scott 
City on July 31, 1998. He died June 5, 2019. She enjoyed taking long 
walks, traveling to the mountains, and going to the carnival with 
family, but what she loved most was always checking up on everyone. She
 was a talented seamstress, crocheted many beautiful pieces, and could 
also fix any car. Her family will cherish the memories of her sweet 
smile and infectious laugh. 
She is survived by her Daughters-Telsa Martinez of Scott City and 
Esperanza Hernandez of Satanta; Grandchildren-Maricio, Emilio, Alencio, 
Andrew and Alia &amp; Siblings- Howard Hoffman, Harold Hoffman and 
Marilyn Hoffman. In addition to her Husband and Parents she was 
preceded in death by her Grandson-Alex &amp; Siblings-Henry Hoffman, 
Karen Hoffman and Tilly Hoffman. 
A Funeral Service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday February 6, 2021, at 
Assembly of God Church of Scott City with Rev. Edward L. Sanderson

Agnes Marie Hernandez

Melvia Jane Leiker, 79, Hays, died Thursday, February 4, 2021, at her home surrounded by family.

She was born August 22, 1941, in Hays 
the daughter of Ben M. and Agnes Louise (Younger) Rupp.&nbsp; In 1959, she 
graduated from Girls Catholic High School.&nbsp; On June 3, 1961 she was 
united in marriage to Donald W. Leiker in Hays, and they celebrated 52 
years of marriage before he preceded her in death on June 16, 2013.&nbsp; She
 worked at Wiesner’s Department Store, cleaned the Romme Real Estate 
Building, and was a homemaker and a gifted seamstress.&nbsp; Jane was a 
member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella 
Circle #254, and enjoyed sewing, cooking, camping at the lake, and 
spending time at their home in Pfeifer.&nbsp; She had a wonderful sense of 
humor, was feisty, had tremendous faith, and loved spending time with 
her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons:&nbsp; Curtis J. 
Leiker and Kyle A. Leiker and wife Melissa all of Hays, a sister-in-law:
 Viola “Ollie” Rupp of Hays, three nephews: Bernie Rupp, Vernon Rupp, 
and Mitch Leiker, a niece: Ruth Dreher, four grandchildren: Kaysha 
Weigel and husband Chris, Christy, Cole, and Clay Leiker, and seven 
great grandchildren: Kali, Emersyn, Danika, Brantlee, Ryder, and Kylie 
Leiker, and Kaisley Weigel.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, husband Donald, daughter Kala Marie Augustine, brother Charles 
M. Rupp, sister Diana “Dottie” Windholz, brother-in-law Delmar Windholz,
 and a niece Deborah Ann Marie “Debbie” Rupp.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Wednesday, February 10, 2021, at St. Joseph Catholic Church 
with Fr. Brian Lager officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the St. Joseph 
Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Tuesday and 
from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Wednesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel

John Paul "J.P." Christian, 55, Hill City, died Wednesday, January 27, 
2021, at his home. He was born in Tokyo, Japan, to Donald and Marlene 
(Neemertens) Sarment. He married Christina Nguyen, in 2006 in Santa 
Clara, California.
 He is survived by his father and mother both of California; his 
brother Joe Sarment of Florida, his sister Sheri Wojcik, Washington 
State, his wife, Christina of the home; his son J.P. Christian, 
daughters: Sarah Christian and Maryanne Christian both of the home.
