Raymond William 'Shorty' Nieman

Raymond William “Shorty” Nieman, age 72, of Hays, Kansas passed away on Friday, February 26, 2021.  Shorty was born January 11, 1949, in Colby, Kansas to Nick and Lucy (Broeckelman) Nieman.  He was a 1967 graduate of Grinnell High School.  Following his graduation, he served in the US Army from 1968 to 1970.  On September 6, 1971, he married Kathy Percival in Oakley, Kansas.

Shorty loved his family and enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially elk, deer, pheasant, and turkey with friends Dale and Joe.  He was a dirt track racing fan and enjoyed taking walks with his dogs.  He was also an avid fan of the Chiefs, Jayhawks, and Royals.

As a contractor, Shorty contributed to the Hays community in many ways, including the construction of additions to Hays Medical Center, St Nicholas of Myra Church, Hays Regional Airport, Hays Recreation Center, and many other projects.

Shorty is survived by his wife, Kathy of Hays; their children; Raymond “Todd” Nieman and wife Colleen of Munjor, Kansas; Brandy Huser and husband Glenn of Victoria, Kansas; four grandchildren, Levi and Chelsie Huser of Victoria and Raymond “Brett” and Raylyn Nieman of Munjor; three brothers, Jerry Nieman and wife Helen of Golden, Colorado,  Lawrence Nieman and wife Judy of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Kenny Nieman of Garden City, Kansas; a sister, Jean Loader and husband Don of Salina, Kansas; a sister-in-law, Pat Nieman of Garden City; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his Parents; three brothers, Al, Jim, and Paul Nieman; and two sisters, Erma Nieman and Alma Gillispie.

Graveside services will be Friday, March 26, 2021, at 2:00 PM at the Kansas State Veterans’ Cemetery at 403 South 13th Street, WaKeeney, KS 67672. Military Honors courtesy of the Hays VFW Honor Guard.  In memory of Shorty, please dress casually and wear your favorite team shirt.
