LaNora “Lonnie” Barnes, 86, of Great Bend, passed away September 20, 2021, at the KU Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan. She was born March 28, 1935, in Great Bend, the second daughter of four children born to Gus and Christina (Cook) Ohnmacht. She grew up on a farm near Olmitz. She married George Barnes on August 30, 1958, in Oklahoma City. He died on March 17, 1981.
LaNora attended grade school at St. Anne’s in Olmitz and high school at Mount Carmel Academy in Wichita. In 1957 she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Clarke College, now Clark University in Dubuque, Iowa. The following year she completed a dietetic internship at Oklahoma University Medical Center at the end of which she became a registered dietician.
LaNora and George resided in the Bay Area near San Francisco their entire married life. She was a devoted wife, mother, and loving grandmother and a wonderful homemaker. She enjoyed baking, especially homemade breads and pies. When her children were older she worked part time as a registered dietician and later as a real estate broker in California. She came back to Kansas in 1988 to take care of her mother. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Altar Society.
Survivors include, two daughters, Dr. Debra Barnes of Frederick, MD, and Diane Da Costa of Darnestown, MD; and four grandsons, Jason, Justin, David and Daniel Da Costa. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Barnes; a brother, Galen Ohnmacht; and two sisters, Christina Hoelscher and LaVerna Moore.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, September 24, 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Altar Society rosary at 4:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, September 25, 2021, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been designated to the Holy Family School Endowment Fund, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Barton County Food Bank, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
