Calvin Clifford Winter, 95, passed away February 15, 2022, at 
Brookdale Senior Living in Great Bend. He was born on August 29, 1926, 
at Hoisington, to Walter Henry and Mae June (Mowry) Winter. He married 
Marie Smith on February 9, 1947, at Garden City. She died on December 21,
 1985. He then married Linnea Searls on November 14, 1986, at Hoisington.
 She survives.

A lifetime Barton county resident, Calvin was a member of First 
Christian Church, VFW Post #3111 and American Legion Post #180. Cal was 
an accomplished athlete in high school and continued his love for sports
 throughout his life. After serving in WWII the United States Navy, Cal 
attended Kansas State University. After graduation he went directly to 
Bushton, Kan. where he coached all sports and became known for his 
coaching demeanor and winning teams. He then moved on to LaCrosse and 
ended up in Great Bend, where he became the Guidance Director of the 
Great Bend School District.

He had great friends and they spent most of their time hunting and 
golfing. He was excited about his 3 “Hole in Ones” at the Lake Barton 
Golf Course. Cal loved the outdoors and felt that Kansas was the most 
beautiful place on earth.

Survivors include, his wife Linnea Winter of the home; two daughters,
 Debra Steinbacher and husband Jim of New Braunfels, Tex. and Kim Maneth
 of Pratt; a brother, Dr. Walter H. Winter, Jr. of Arvada, Colo.; seven 
grandchildren, Trista Voos, Tabor Maneth, Gabriel Nall, Cade Brodbeck, 
Ashley Brown, Sydney Steinbacher and Nate Steinbacher; and seven great 
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, 
Marie Winter; a daughter, Fawne Winter; three brothers, Harold Winter, 
Dr. Wayne Winter and Glenn Winter; two sisters, Velma Betz and Dorothy 
Dowse; and a grandson, Sabin Steinbacher.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial 
service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 19, 2022, at 
Bryant Funeral Home with Reverend Josh Leu presiding. Inurnment will be 
in the Great Bend Cemetery. 

Memorials have been designated to the USD 
428 Education Foundation, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Edwin Carl Hofstetter, 100 years 8 months, passed away February 11, 2022, at Providence Place in Kansas City, Kansas. Edwin was born June 10, 1921, to Henry and Williamina (Beisner) Hofstetter at their home in rural Osborne County north of Natoma, Kansas. He graduated from Natoma High School. He joined the United States Army in 1942 and served&nbsp;as a Staff Sergeant in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. He left the military at the end of the war in October 1945. He received the American Theater Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; EAME Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars; and a Good Conduct Medal.&nbsp;

He married Neita Luhman August 28, 1948. They lived at their farm north of Natoma where they raised their two sons. Edwin was a lifelong member of Peace Lutheran Church in Natoma and over the years served the congregation in several positions. He belonged to the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240, served on the Round Mound Township Board, and the Natoma School Board. After retiring from farming, Ed and Neita moved to their home in Natoma. They celebrated 65 years of marriage. Edwin enjoyed pitching horseshoes, playing basketball, playing pitch and pinochle, hunting, and watching K. U. sports. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren and laughing uncontrollably at a good joke.&nbsp;

Edwin is survived by his sons, Darrel Hofstetter and wife Nancy of Tonganoxie, Kansas, and Roy Hofstetter of Cummings, Kansas; and by seven grandchildren: Corbin Hofstetter and wife Barb of Shawnee, Kansas, Rachael Hofstetter of Smithville, Missouri,&nbsp;Andrea Hofstetter of Kansas City, Missouri, Janelle Martinelli and husband Byron of Parkville, Missouri, Chad Hofstetter of Cummings, Kansas, Kristyn Sweeney and husband Sean of Spring Hill, Kansas, Joshua Hofstetter and wife Rebecca of Carroll, Iowa, and&nbsp;by 12 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his younger brother Paul Hofstetter (96) and wife Deloris of Hill City, Kansas and many nieces and nephews.

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents, wife Neita, brother Ernest Hofstetter, and sister Frieda Pfortmiller.

Edwin’s&nbsp;funeral&nbsp;will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, February 18, 2022, at the Peace Lutheran Church in Natoma, Kansas. &nbsp;Burial will follow at the&nbsp;North Lutheran Cemetery&nbsp;north of Natoma. &nbsp;Military honors will be provided by the&nbsp;Russell V.F.W. Post 6240. &nbsp;Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. to 10:45 A.M. at the church the day of the service. &nbsp;

George&nbsp;and Cooper Gier, of Russell, Kansas, died&nbsp;in a tragic car accident&nbsp;on Friday, February 11, 2022, in rural Russell County, Kansas.

George&nbsp;Cecil Gier&nbsp;was born on June 28, 1981,&nbsp;in Salina,&nbsp;Kansas, the son of&nbsp;Leo G. and Marian K. (Cooper) Gier. &nbsp;He grew up in Osborne, Kansas, and graduated from Osborne High School in the class of&nbsp;1999. &nbsp;After high school he played football&nbsp;for 2 years at Highland Community College. &nbsp;He was united in marriage to Marcia Dawn Woodyard on&nbsp;October 07, 2006 in&nbsp;Manhattan, Kansas. &nbsp;From this union they were blessed with two children Hailey and Cooper. &nbsp;He worked as a ranchhand and was 100%&nbsp;country&nbsp;and cowboy. &nbsp;He was a member of&nbsp;St. John Lutheran Church in Russell,&nbsp;lifelong 4-H&nbsp;member,&nbsp;American Quarter Horse Association, and former Fire Chief in Wheaton, Kansas. &nbsp;He enjoyed spending time performing his ranch chores, tending cattle, being outdoors,&nbsp;working and competing in rodeos,&nbsp;working with his horses and&nbsp;cattle&nbsp;dogs, hunting and teaching his children&nbsp;to appreciate the things he loved. &nbsp;Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, laughing, being a goof ball&nbsp;and&nbsp;having&nbsp;a&nbsp;good time.

Cooper&nbsp;Francis Gier&nbsp;was born on June 03, 2011, in Manhattan, Kansas, the son&nbsp;of George&nbsp;and Marcia (Woodyard) Gier. &nbsp;He attended Bickerdyke Elementary in Russell, Kansas. &nbsp;He was a member of&nbsp;St. John Lutheran Church in Russell,&nbsp;Fossil&nbsp;Creek&nbsp;4-H, Bickerdyke Bunch, 2 x 5 youth group&nbsp;and&nbsp;Russell&nbsp;Recreation football and basketball teams.&nbsp;He enjoyed&nbsp;helping his father with his ranch chores,&nbsp;pestering his&nbsp;sister,&nbsp;being outdoors, playing football,&nbsp;playing with his friends, spending time with his&nbsp;family&nbsp;and snuggling with his mom and dad. &nbsp;

Mary Lynn Murphy, 74, of&nbsp;Natoma, Kansas, died on Saturday, February 12, 2022, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Mary was born on September 23,&nbsp;1947, in Sterling, Kansas, the daughter of Cecil D.&nbsp;and Ida Ruth (Skibbe) Wohlford. &nbsp;She grew up&nbsp;on her family’s&nbsp;farm near&nbsp;Geneseo, Kansas, and graduated from Geneseo High School in the class of 1966. &nbsp;After&nbsp;high school she attended Sterling College, Ft. Hays State University and Arkansas State University and received her&nbsp;bachelor’s&nbsp;degree. &nbsp;She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Ronnie Dean Murphy on December 27, 1968, in Geneseo, Kansas. &nbsp;From this union Mary and&nbsp;Ronnie&nbsp;were blessed with 3 sons Sean,&nbsp;Heath, and Aaron. &nbsp;She worked as a middle&nbsp;school&nbsp;special education teacher and taught in the Delta C-7 School in Deering, Missouri,&nbsp;Lucas, Luray and Russell, Kansas schools and worked as a librarian at the&nbsp;Natoma High School. &nbsp;She attended the United Methodist&nbsp;Church in Natoma, Kansas. &nbsp;She was a member of the&nbsp;Natoma American Legion Ladies&nbsp;Auxiliary, Natoma City Cemetery Board, Natoma City Library Board and Lyons Club. &nbsp;She enjoyed reading, playing the piano, gardening,&nbsp;volunteering at school and the church and&nbsp;helping at the Natoma&nbsp;City Library. &nbsp;Most of all she enjoyed spending time&nbsp;with her husband, children and especially&nbsp;enjoyed being with&nbsp;her grandchildren.

Surviving family include her&nbsp;husband Ronnie of the home; sons Sean Murphy and wife Marcy of Merriam, Kansas, Aaron Murphy and wife Alison of Natoma, Kansas&nbsp;and Heath Murphy and wife Megan of Overland Park,&nbsp;Kansas; sisters Katherine Pollard and husband Bill of Austin, Texas and Jean Stefek and husband&nbsp;Alan of Ellsworth, Kansas.

Evelyn L. Kowalke, 90, died Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at Garden 
Valley Retirement Village in Garden City, Kansas. She was born March 3,
 1931, in Chase, Kansas the daughter of William Leopold &amp; Lillie 
Karoline Dora (Koch) Manke. 
 Evelyn grew up and attended schools and graduated from high school 
in Chase, Kansas. On June 4, 1950, she married Raymond Kowalke in 
Ellinwood, Kansas. From 1950 to 1967 they lived South of the Smokey 
Hill River east of Wallace, Kansas. They moved to Garden City in 1967

retirement in 1994. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of 
Garden City, the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, and Phi Sigma Alpha
 Sorority. 
 Survivors include 4 children Carol Wenzel of Wichita, Kansas, Cindy
 Messenger of Garden City, Kansas, Terry (Sylvia) Kowalke of Tomball, 
Texas, and Kenneth Kowalke of Clovis, New Mexico; 2 sisters Delores 
Quasebarth of Andover, Kansas and Gloria Hanson of Wallace, Kansas; 9 
grandchildren Doug Gashler, Jace Stubbs, Josey Kowalke, Jillian Jones, 
Justin Kowalke, Ryan Kowalke, Jody Kerr, Charyl Obregon, &amp; Tyler 
Messenger; and 22 great-grandchildren. Evelyn is preceded in death by

 1931, in Chase, Kansas the daughter of William Leopold &amp; Lillie 
Karoline Dora (Koch) Manke. 
 Evelyn grew up and attended schools and graduated from high school 
in Chase, Kansas. On June 4, 1950, she married Raymond Kowalke in 
Ellinwood, Kansas. From 1950 to 1967 they lived South of the Smokey 
Hill River east of Wallace, Kansas. They moved to Garden City in 1967 
where they have lived since. Evelyn worked as a Stanley Dealer from

 B. Eddy, 92, of Hays died Tuesday, January 25, 2022. &nbsp;She was born 
November 13, 1929, to William O. and Vera (Capron) Bates.

She was a graduate of Hays High School and was crowned Hays High’s 
first Homecoming Queen in 1946. She continued her education at Kansas 
State University and the University of Kansas before her marriage to Dr.
 Vic Eddy in 1950.

Carol was an active and energetic volunteer for the City of Hays for 
most of her adult life. She was a member of the Hays Beautification 
Board, one of the first board members of the Hays Arts Council, Hays 
Library Board Member and Hays Library Trust Board Member, Hays Business 
and Professional Women, “Woman of the Year” recipient in 1993 and for 25
 years she was a Certified Fitness Instructor for the Hays Recreation 
Commission.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Her signature accomplishment was Founder and President of the 
Humane Society of the High Plains in Hays.&nbsp; In addition, she was a 
member of Pi Beta Phi at KSU and also a member of P.E.O. in Hays.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Victor M. Eddy and brother, William “Bill” Bates.

She is survived by her son, Steven Eddy and wife, Patti, Arvada, CO; 
two daughters, Carolyn Houchin, Chipita Park, CO; Jan Castelli and 
husband John, Bartlesville, OK; three grandchildren, Meghan Taylor and 
husband Corey, Denver, CO; Allison Widder, and husband Travis, 
Westminster, CO; Kerry Roberts and husband Gavin, North Ogden, UT; and 6
 great grandchildren.&nbsp; Finally but not least of all, two feral cats.

There will be a memorial celebration of life reception on Saturday, 
February 19, 2022, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Smoky Hill Country 
Club, in Hays, for friends and family.

Following his graduation, he continued farming operations with his father on a family farm near Angelus, Kansas. He was a member of the Angelus Knights of Columbus and had served as Grand Knight.&nbsp; Robert was preceded in death by his mother and father Betty and Jerome Robben. Viola R. (Dinkel) Richmeier, 90, of Grinnell, died Friday, February 11, 
2022, at the Gove County Medical Center, in Quinter, KS. She was born 
July 7, 1931, on the family farm south of Victoria, KS, to Frank M. and 
Rosa (Hertel) Dinkel. She was raised on the farm and attended school in 
Victoria. 
On April 13, 1955, Viola married Leo Francis Richmeier, in Victoria. 
During their first year of marriage, they lived on a farm southeast of 
Park, KS. They then moved to a farm southwest of Grinnell, KS. During 
the nine years they lived there, they welcomed their first three songs. 
In 1965, they moved to the farm south of Grinnell, where their youngest 
son was born. 
Viola was a Dairy woman, a farmer and rancher. She was very good at this
 and worked very hard to keep the farm running. This past fall she 
planted her last wheat crop. 
Viola was well known for her homemade angel food cake that she took to many functions and her swatzenberry kuchen. 
Viola was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and Altar Society, all of Grinnell. 
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Leo; brothers, 
Hilarius, Clarence, Edward and George; sisters, Julitta Dechant, Bertha 
Prewo, Regina Dechant, Sr. Francis Rose Dinkel C.S.A., Irene Scruggs, 
Melinda Griebel, Sr. Paul Ann Dinkel C.S.A. and Rita Rohr and infant 
siblings Fidelis and Viola Mary Dinkel. 
She is survived by her sons, Thomas and wife Karen (McClain), of 
Wickenburg, AZ, Edwin and wife Una (Martin), of Quinter, KS, John, of 
Grinnell and Leo of Grinnell; grandsons, Patrick Richmeier, of Quinter,

Maurice Lee Smith, 90, died February 13, 2022 at the University of Kansas Great Bend Campus.&nbsp; He was born on January 10, 1932 in Goultry, Oklahoma, the son of Barney and Hulda (Buller) Smith.

Maurice was the only child of Barney and Hulda.&nbsp; He
 spent his early childhood years in Goultry, Oklahoma before moving with
 his parents to Sublette, where he completed his education at the 
country school near their farm.&nbsp; On January 1, 1960, he married Norma Maddy.&nbsp;

The couple moved from Garden City to Colorado, California, and Oregon before returning to Kansas in 1974.&nbsp; Maurice worked as a glazier in several different glass companies.&nbsp; The family settled in Pierceville and Maurice worked for an auto parts store until his retirement.&nbsp; After his retirement, Maurice operated an antique store.&nbsp; He enjoyed working on, restoring, and collecting old cars.&nbsp; His favorite car was a Packard.&nbsp; Maurice and Norma moved to Great Bend to be near their son.

Donald W. Smith and wife Pam of Olmitz; seven grandchildren, Rosalie

Maurice Lee Smith

Marvin William Slagle, 89, passed away February 11, 2022, at Country Living of Larned.

He was born February 29, 1932, in Ness County, Kansas; the son of George and Marie Van Boskirk Slagle.

A lifetime area resident; he was the youngest of six children. He was
 the president at Production Credit Association and after retiring he 
worked as an agricultural loan officer for the First National Bank for 
over a decade. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and 
the Knights of Columbus, Larned. Marvin loved playing golf, skiing, and 
watching sports; especially Wichita State basketball. He loved classical
 music and ragtime jazz, doing crossword puzzles, and reading. He served
 in the US Army doing intelligence work.

On April 11, 1953, he married Joan Vogel in Ness City. She survives.

Other survivors include; a son, Roger Slagle, Larned and a daughter 
Nancy (Miley) Mundwiler, Wichita; and four grandchildren; J.C. Slagle, 
Tyler Slagle, Marie Mundwiler and Samantha Mundwiler.

He was preceded in death by; three sisters, Beth, Elaine, Lavelle; 
two Brothers, Van and Ray; and two step grandchildren, Trey and Cory 
Coker.

Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Mass will be 10:30 a.m. 
Wednesday February 16, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father 
Bernard Felix presiding.&nbsp; Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. 
Tuesday at Beckwith Mortuary.

 the president at Production Credit Association and after retiring he 
worked as an agricultural loan officer for the First National Bank for 
over a decade. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and 
the Knights of Columbus, Larned. Marvin loved playing golf, skiing, and 
watching sports; especially Wichita State basketball. He loved classical
 music and ragtime jazz, doing crossword puzzles, and reading. He served
 in the US Army doing intelligence work.On April 11, 1953, he married Joan Vogel in Ness City. She survives.Other survivors include; a son, Roger Slagle, Larned and a daughter 
Nancy (Miley) Mundwiler, Wichita; and four grandchildren; J.C. Slagle, 
Tyler Slagle, Marie Mundwiler and Samantha Mundwiler.He was preceded in death by; three sisters, Beth, Elaine, Lavelle; 
two Brothers, Van and Ray; and two step grandchildren, Trey and Cory 
Coker.Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Mass will be 10:30 a.m. 
Wednesday February 16, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father 
Bernard Felix presiding.&nbsp; Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Marvin William Slagle

Phillipsburg resident Mike Engling passed away February 12, 2022,&nbsp; peacefully at his home surrounded by family and friends at the age of 
64.

He was born October 17, 1957, in Plainville, KS the son of Edward M. 
Engling Sr. and Clara R. (Golembiewski) Engling.&nbsp; He graduated from the 
Plainville High School.

Following high school Mike went to work for Tom’s Machine and Welding
 Service in Plainville, KS, then for Kyle Railroad in 1989 in 
Phillipsburg, KS.&nbsp; He later returned to Tom’s Machine followed by 
G&amp;S Roustabout in Demar.

He was united in marriage to Dee Chandler on June 20, 2003, in Phillipsburg, KS.

Survivors include his wife Dee of Phillipsburg; 6 step-daughters 
Bonnie Garman of Salina, Staci Smith of McPherson, Casey Ralphs of Utah,
 Stacey Goscha of Tulsa, OK, Trisha McMullen of Salina, and Erica Tatro 
of Salina; a step-son Dustin Peterson of Phillipsburg; 11 grandchildren;
 5 great grandchildren; 3 brothers Edward Engling, Jr. and Andrew 
Engling both of Natoma, and Anthony Engling of Salina; and a sister 
Christine Hoffman of Hays.

Cremation was planned.&nbsp; A private family service will take place at a later date.

Mike Engling

Goodland, Kansas, resident Barbara N. Butts, age 87, passed away on 
Thursday, February 3rd, 2022. She was born on February 7th, 1934, in 
Stratton, Colorado. She was the daughter of Laurene and Kenneth Carl.&nbsp; 
Barb met her husband, Neil Butts in 1951 and went on to marry in 1952 in
 Wray, Colorado.

Together, they became the caretakers of Smokey Gardens in 1959.&nbsp; Her 
children and older grandchildren have cherished memories from their 
years at the Smokey.&nbsp; Neil retired in 1991 and they moved to Goodland, 
KS. &nbsp;Barb continued to work in the community. Sadly, Neil died in 1999 
and Barb continued to be the matriarch of the family and a very 
important piece of raising all of her grandchildren.&nbsp; Once her 
great-grandchildren were born, she became the ultimate GG.&nbsp; She was so 
proud, loving, and fiercely protective of all of her family.&nbsp; &nbsp;Barb 
moved into Topside Manor in 2017.&nbsp; They quickly learned that she is a 
boss, the big boss.&nbsp; They either loved her or were scared of her, no 
in-between.&nbsp; You never had to guess what she was feeling or thinking, 
she made sure you knew, the good, the bad, and the ugly. She loved big 
but was very selective on whom she loved.&nbsp; Lucky employees got one of 
her coveted muffins made by her son, the “Muffin Man.”&nbsp; After the death 
of three of her five children, she lost some of her spark. &nbsp;So many 
pieces of her heart were in heaven. &nbsp;Barb’s death has been devastating 
for her family left on Earth, but know that her heaven family welcomed 
her with open arms.&nbsp;

It will always be remembered that Barb lived her life with an 
unrivaled passion for her children, grandchildren, and 
great-grandchildren.&nbsp; She was always the caretaker of the family, with a
 door wide open for all that needed it.

Barb is preceded in death by her husband, Neil Butts; sons, Troy 
Butts and Michael Butts; daughter, Patricia Mills; daughter-in-law, 
DeLora (Dee) Butts; grandson, Timothy Butts; and parents, &nbsp;Kenneth and 
Laurene Carl.

Barbara N. Butts

Barbara Ann Ludlow was the first child of Ralph and Lois (Fairchild) Dick born on April 24, 1948 in Great Bend, Kansas. She inherited her father’s striking blue eyes and her mother’s
 gift of cooking.&nbsp; Barbara would later become a sister to Janelle whom 
she forced dance lessons upon throughout their lives growing up.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

She would attend school in Larned and would graduate with her class in 1967.&nbsp; While out on a weekend dragging the gut with girlfriends, she would meet Lloyd David Ludlow.&nbsp; She told her mom after their first meeting “I meet the man I’m going to marry” and she did Feb. 5, 1967, and what a beautiful bride she was. David would go on to join the US Army in 1971 and she took on the role as a soldier’s wife for 19 years until his death in December 1988. Barbara enjoyed shopping, traveling, and bowling.&nbsp; She also loved all 
animals great and small.&nbsp; It wasn’t a surprise for her to go out on an 
errand and return home with a cat...dog. Or even a Guinea pig.&nbsp; 

She had three daughters Shelly Dacamara (Roberto) Shela Stewart (Tracy) and her Texas Tornado Kelly Tippie.&nbsp; Her daughters blessed her with 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.&nbsp; She is preceded in death by her husband David Ludlow and her parents Ralph and Lois Dick.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Cremation
 has taken place and a memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, 
February 19, 2022, at First Presbyterian Church, Larned. Burial will be 
in the Larned Cemetery.

Paul Duane Anderson, age 71, died January 22, 2022. He was born in Fort Collins, CO on February 21, 1950. 
 Paul lived in Edmond, KS the last 40 years. Prior to that he lived 
in the Denver, CO area &amp; suburbs. Paul graduated from West High 
School, Denver CO. He was a member of the West High School choir. Paul
 sang in the “Singing Christmas Tree” his senior year. He Loved to sing
 and formed a quartet at a church in Arvada, CO. He loved spending time 
in the mountains, especially around Steamboat Springs and he loved 
tubing in the mountain streams. He was a member of the Church of 
Christ in the So. Denver from 1959-1961. The church moved as it grew 
and was in Arvada 59th &amp; Vance when he left the Denver area. Paul 
was a member of the Norton Chrisitan Church. He retired from Natoma 
Manufacturing, LLC in Norton, KS.
 Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Emma Anderson; a
 niece, Ginger Stevenson and a brother, Robert Anderson. He is survived 
by his brother, Bill Anderson &amp; wife Joan of Des Moines, IA; niece, 
Tina Anthony of Waukee, IA; nephews, Bill Anderson Jr. (Kim) of Ankeny 
IA and Troy Anthony of Des Moines; great and great- great nephews and

Ernestine Marie Augustine, 88, Munjor, died Saturday, February 12, 2022, at HaysMed.

She was born July 13, 1933, in Stockton,
 the daughter of Ernest and Hilda (Roelf) Lamkin.&nbsp; She graduated from 
Stockton High School then earned her Cosmetology License.&nbsp; She was 
preceded in death by two husbands, William David “Bill” Philip III and 
Alfred “Fritz” Augustine.&nbsp; Ernestine was a homemaker who cared for her 
family with a well kept home and family meals.&nbsp; She enjoyed crafting and
 collecting Beanie Babies with her daughter Angela.

Survivors include two sons: Doug Philip
 and wife Gail of Olathe and Bob Philip and wife Bonnie of Munjor, a 
daughter: Patty Werth and husband Kevin of Hays, six grandchildren: 
Stephen, Robert, Thomas, and Danny Philip, and Bill and Jeremy Werth, 12
 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, husbands Bill and Fritz, daughter Angela Augustine, grandson 
Michael Werth, and a great grandson Colton Lane.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on
 Saturday, February 19, 2022, at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with 
Rev. Delbert Stanton officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in Stockton

Adeline Bernice Sandoval

Florene Jane Messamore, 92, formerly of Colby, died February 6, 2022, at
 Brookdale Memory Care in Shawnee, Kansas. She was born April 26, 1929, 
to Peter and Lucy (Nordman) Bixenman in Hays, Kansas. Florene grew up in
 Menlo and then Levant, KS where she graduated from high school in 1947. 
In 1946 she married Darrell Kent Williams of Colby. Four children were 
born to this union: Mriana (Barbara), Rebecca, Mischele and Pete 
(Darrell). 
 After living in Englewood, Colorado, Florene returned to Colby and 
bought her home at 4th and Range. In 1965 she married Jerry Messamore 
who was a kind and loving husband, dad and grandpa. 
Florene’s faith was a huge part of who she was. She was an active member
 and supporter of her Sacred Heart Church in Colby, donating time and 
talents to their fundraisers and programs, especially the Sacred Heart 
School. She practiced charity and kindness in everything she did. 
She had a number of successful careers. Florene worked at Englewood 
State Bank in Colorado for 5 years. Returning to Colby she worked at the
 ASCS office helping farmers with government programs where she retired 
as Chief Clerk and Program Assistant in 1985. She then studied and 
passed exams to become a financial advisor for Waddell &amp; Reed 
Investment Co. She and Jerry worked there together until final 
retirement in 1996. During that time Florene was “Rookie of the Year” 
and received many other awards for her achievements. She always saw her 
job as helping people invest wisely for their future. 
Florene and Jerry had a great time square dancing, working together, 
entertaining at their dining room table, playing cards and games, 
traveling, and spending winters in Arizona with more great friends. They
 moved to the Kansas City area with Mriana in 2015. 
Florene was talented in many areas. She was a great cook, always had an 
extra plate at the table, and coffee and treats were there whenever 
anyone dropped by. Her door was always open, and everyone was always 
welcome. She loved gardening and canning, and she enjoyed raising grapes
 and making wine and jelly. Florene was a world class seamstress. She 
made wedding dresses, suits, baby clothes, quilts, play tents...anything
 the family needed or wanted. She had many hobbies and interests. 
Florene took art lessons and painted tole and acrylic. She took tap 
dance lessons at age 60 and danced in a group with friends. 
Florene--Grandma Renie--treasured the times she had with grandkids and 
the great-grandkids. She loved caring for them and playing with them. 
Florene was very generous with her time. She volunteered extensively for
 RSVP in Colby, crocheting afghans for foster kids and veterans, 
supporting the blood drives, and their other programs. To acknowledge 
Jerry and the soldiers of WWII, she participated in the VFW Ladies 
Auxiliary. In Kansas City she volunteered for Catholic Charities. 
She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry, her parents, her 
sisters--Gene, Shirley and Pat, and brothers--Bob and Leroy. Florene is 
survived by her children, Mriana, Rebecca, Mischele and Pete (Barbara)

 </figure>Florene Jane Messamore, 92, formerly of Colby, died February 6, 2022, at
 Brookdale Memory Care in Shawnee, Kansas. She was born April 26, 1929, 
to Peter and Lucy (Nordman) Bixenman in Hays, Kansas. Florene grew up in
 Menlo and then Levant, KS where she graduated from high school in 1947. 
In 1946 she married Darrell Kent Williams of Colby. Four children were 
born to this union: Mriana (Barbara), Rebecca, Mischele and Pete 
(Darrell). 
 After living in Englewood, Colorado, Florene returned to Colby and 
bought her home at 4th and Range. In 1965 she married Jerry Messamore 
who was a kind and loving husband, dad and grandpa. 
Florene’s faith was a huge part of who she was. She was an active member
 and supporter of her Sacred Heart Church in Colby, donating time and 
talents to their fundraisers and programs, especially the Sacred Heart 
School. She practiced charity and kindness in everything she did. 
She had a number of successful careers. Florene worked at Englewood 
State Bank in Colorado for 5 years. Returning to Colby she worked at the
 ASCS office helping farmers with government programs where she retired 
as Chief Clerk and Program Assistant in 1985. She then studied and 
passed exams to become a financial advisor for Waddell &amp; Reed 
Investment Co. She and Jerry worked there together until final 
retirement in 1996. During that time Florene was “Rookie of the Year” 
and received many other awards for her achievements. She always saw her 
job as helping people invest wisely for their future. 
Florene and Jerry had a great time square dancing, working together, 
entertaining at their dining room table, playing cards and games, 
traveling, and spending winters in Arizona with more great friends. They
 moved to the Kansas City area with Mriana in 2015. 
Florene was talented in many areas. She was a great cook, always had an 
extra plate at the table, and coffee and treats were there whenever 
anyone dropped by. Her door was always open, and everyone was always 
welcome. She loved gardening and canning, and she enjoyed raising grapes
 and making wine and jelly. Florene was a world class seamstress. She 
made wedding dresses, suits, baby clothes, quilts, play tents...anything
 the family needed or wanted. She had many hobbies and interests. 
Florene took art lessons and painted tole and acrylic. She took tap 
dance lessons at age 60 and danced in a group with friends. 
Florene--Grandma Renie--treasured the times she had with grandkids and 
the great-grandkids. She loved caring for them and playing with them. 
Florene was very generous with her time. She volunteered extensively for
 RSVP in Colby, crocheting afghans for foster kids and veterans, 
supporting the blood drives, and their other programs. To acknowledge 
Jerry and the soldiers of WWII, she participated in the VFW Ladies 
Auxiliary. In Kansas City she volunteered for Catholic Charities. 
She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry, her parents, her 
sisters--Gene, Shirley and Pat, and brothers--Bob and Leroy. Florene is 
survived by her children, Mriana, Rebecca, Mischele and Pete (Barbara) 
Williams; 8 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, cousins, nieces and

Martha Jean “Nean” Dixon, age 95, passed away on February 1, 2022, at
 the Greeley County Hospital in Tribune, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on April

 Marguerite Masterson Dixon.&nbsp; A resident of Tribune, Kansas since 1996 
moving from Dodge City, Kansas, she was a Teacher and Bookkeeper.

Ernest Jule Mudd, 78, died Friday February 11, 2022, at Lane County 
Hospital in Dighton, Kansas. He was born October 31, 1943, and was the 
adopted son of Marvin &amp; Ethel Mudd of Alamota, Kansas. 
All he ever wanted to do was work on the farm. He was dedicated to his 
cattle as well as farming the ground. In his youth he liked fast cars 
&amp; fast boats, if he had free time he was always tinkering on a 
vehicle, or at the lake. He was always looking for an opportunity to 
play practical jokes or stump you with a novelty puzzle or game. 
On Oct. 21, 1978, he married Carolyn Kay Bartlett. Through this union, he
 adopted Kay's two children - Robert (Bob) and Jennifer. In 1979, their 
daughter Melissa was born. After Kay retired from the FSA office, they 
began their crafting business, Mudd Puddle Creations. He enjoyed 
hunting, creating various crafts, and spending time with family and 
friends.&nbsp; 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Ethel Mudd. His wife Carolyn Kay Mudd. And grandchild Jordan Mudd. 
He is survived by his Children- Bob Mudd of Dighton, Kansas Jennifer 
&amp; Marty Garcia of Arvada, Colorado, Melissa &amp; Jarric of

Before joining the group, he was in the Norton State Hospital. Earl was a
 quiet man that enjoyed time to himself, rocking in his chair and 
flipping through magazines or taking a good nap. He enjoyed food from 
his favorite pasta dish, lasagna, to his favorite chocolate treats. He 
will be truly missed by his DSNWK family in Norton.

Earl O’ Bryan

Shirley Ann (Castle) Ward, age 87 came into the world on December 8, 
1934, on a farm north of Oberlin, Kansas to parents Robert Castle and Zoe
 Ella (Stebbins) Castle and passed on to her heavenly home to join the 
sunset painting team on February 9, 2022, at Decatur Good Samaritan 
Society in Oberlin. 
 Shirley was a fiercely independent woman even before the Women’s 
Liberation movement. She graduated from Decatur Community High School 
with the class of 1952 and furthered her education at St. Luke’s School 
of Nursing in Denver, Colorado, gaining her Registered Nurse 
certification. After graduation, she worked at the hospital in Oberlin 
and thus began the many friendships that were born with fellow nurses 
and nurse assistants and carried on throughout her life. One of her 
often shared memories was of a night shift with many patients in the 
hospital, just she and one assistant working. The full moon brought in 
five new mamas to give birth. When morning came, she went outside and 
sat on the curb by the ER and cried, thankful all the patients were okay
 and there were five healthy mamas with five new babies. She followed 
those kids throughout her life. She worked 57 years as an RN, much of it
 in elder care. In her sunset years many of the people she worked with 
helped care for her and she loved them all dearly. 
 On December 21, 1957, she married John H. Ward Jr. To this union two 
children were born, Shayla (Ward) Williby and John H. Ward III (Trey). 
Shirley and Johnny owned and operated Ward Drug and added the card and 
gift shop to the business in 1972. Later she owned and operated The 
Flower Shop for several years in Oberlin as well. 
 Traveling was an integral part of Shirley. She never met a casino 
she did not love; from Las Vegas to Deadwood, South Dakota, to Dodge 
City, Kansas. Perhaps her favorite part was dragging family and friends 
along with her for the shared comedy and chaos that followed her. 
Travels carried her to a quiet beach in Hawaii to watch the sunset, a 
canopied forest in Canada, to England to attend a sitting of parliament,
 and Passover in Puerto Rico. As wonderful as these life experiences 
were, none compared to sitting on a bucket fishing for bullheads with 
her father and later fishing trips with son Trey. Shirley had a 
competitive spirit and truly enjoyed game nights and snacks around 
kitchen tables with those she loved. She was an accomplished bowler and 
enjoyed many trips to the state bowling tournament with her bowling 
friends. She loved holiday get togethers, summer bbq’s and time spent 
with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Shirley truly cherished 
her loved ones and they cherished her in return. 
 Preceding her in death were her parents, husband John, sister-in-law
 and brother-in-law, Sandy and Bob Russell. Those left to celebrate her 
life are her children and their spouses; Trey Ward and wife Debra, 
Shayla Williby and husband Doug. Sister Janice K. Castle, Brother Bob 
(Deanna) Castle, Sister-in-Law Marcia (Jerry) Lohoefener. Three 
grandchildren; Cammi Williby-Flax (Tyson), Justin Williby (Angie) and 
Josh Williby (Kari), ten great grandchildren; Treger, Trevon, Tateum, 
Gage, Reagan, Gatlin, Olivia, Ella, Hailee and Von, many nieces and 
nephews and special friends Gary and Leola Zodrow. 
 Celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, February 19th 
at 11:00 a.m., at the Methodist Church in Oberlin, with Pastor Gordon 
Pettibone officiating. A private inurnment will be held at a later date.

Shirley Ann Ward

Norine M. Leiker, 79, Hays, died Saturday, February 12, 2022, at Via Christi Village.

She was born September 16, 1942, in 
Hays, the daughter of Leo A. and Angela (Klaus) Leiker.&nbsp; Norine attended
 Hays schools and graduated from Girls Catholic High School in 1960, and
 while in high school, her brother appreciated her help with his English
 homework.&nbsp; She was self-employed as a housekeeper and worked at 
Travenol.&nbsp; Norine had a special love and connection with her nieces, 
nephews, and cousins.&nbsp; She enjoyed artwork, drawing, and possessed a 
strong faith in God and devotion to the rosary.&nbsp;

Survivors include three brothers: 
LaVern Leiker of Great Bend, Reinhold “Ronnie” Leiker and wife Dianna of
 Hays, and Art Leiker and wife Marilyn of Hays, a sister: Erma Dinges of
 Hays, two sisters-in-law: Bernetha Leiker of Hays, and Darlene Leiker 
of Ellis, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, three brothers: Herb, Erwin, and Kenneth Leiker, two 
brothers-in-law: Norman Gross and Jim Dinges, and two sisters-in-law: 
Janet and June Leiker.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Friday, February 18, 2022, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic 
Church, Munjor with Fr. Damian Richards officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow
 in the church cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on

 </figure>Norine M. Leiker, 79, Hays, died Saturday, February 12, 2022, at Via Christi Village.She was born September 16, 1942, in 
Hays, the daughter of Leo A. and Angela (Klaus) Leiker.&nbsp; Norine attended
 Hays schools and graduated from Girls Catholic High School in 1960, and
 while in high school, her brother appreciated her help with his English
 homework.&nbsp; She was self-employed as a housekeeper and worked at 
Travenol.&nbsp; Norine had a special love and connection with her nieces, 
nephews, and cousins.&nbsp; She enjoyed artwork, drawing, and possessed a 
strong faith in God and devotion to the rosary.&nbsp;Survivors include three brothers: 
LaVern Leiker of Great Bend, Reinhold “Ronnie” Leiker and wife Dianna of
 Hays, and Art Leiker and wife Marilyn of Hays, a sister: Erma Dinges of
 Hays, two sisters-in-law: Bernetha Leiker of Hays, and Darlene Leiker 
of Ellis, and numerous nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her 
parents, three brothers: Herb, Erwin, and Kenneth Leiker, two 
brothers-in-law: Norman Gross and Jim Dinges, and two sisters-in-law: 
Janet and June Leiker.Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Friday, February 18, 2022, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic 
Church, Munjor with Fr. Damian Richards officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow
 in the church cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on 
Thursday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9:00 am until

Norine M. Leiker

Clarice Kay Pruter, 84, of Russell, KS, passed away on Friday, February 11, 2022, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, KS.

Kay was born on December 12, 1937, in Hays, KS, the daughter of 
Clarence T. and Clara M. (Pfortmiller) Christensen.&nbsp; She grew up in 
Natoma, KS, and graduated from Natoma High School in 1955.&nbsp; Kay was 
united in marriage to Everett Pruter, Jr. on August 1, 1955, in Denver, 
Colorado.&nbsp; From this union, Kay and Jr. were blessed with six children: 
Kally, Brad, Carrie, Angie, Deena and Kenda.&nbsp; Kay was a talented 
musician and enjoyed playing the piano and organ.&nbsp; A lifetime member of 
Peace Lutheran Church, she shared her musical talents as the church 
organist for 60 years.&nbsp; She also served her community as an accompanist 
for countless school events, weddings and funerals.&nbsp; Kay was a hard 
worker and held several jobs outside the home while caring for her 
family.&nbsp; For many years, she worked alongside her husband as co-owner of
 Pruter’s Market in Natoma, where she not only provided a vital service 
to the community but also befriended many with her spunky attitude and 
caring nature.&nbsp; Of all her accomplishments, Kay’s children, 
grandchildren and great grandchildren were her greatest pride and joy.&nbsp; 
Kay is now reunited with her son, Brad, who died in an oilfield accident
 at the age of 22.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Surviving family include her daughters Kally McConkey (Mike) of 
Wamego, KS, Carrie Pruter of Salina, KS, Angie Koshgarian (Richard) of 
Salina, KS, Deena Ruggels (Vance) of Russell, KS, and Kenda Johnson 
(Mark) of Hays, KS; and brother Don Christensen (Liz); eight 
grandchildren Kyle and Craig (Ashley) McConkey, Alec and Brady (Amber) 
Ruggels and Cassidy (Benjamin) Miller, Carly, Truman and Sylvia Johnson;
 and eight great grandchildren Shaela, &nbsp;Libby, and Maddy McConkey, 
Cooper Gallagher, Layton Ruggels, Finley and Lily Ruggels, Hazel Miller;
 and dear friend Kelly Nuss of Natoma, KS.

Kay was preceded in death by her husband Jr., son Bradley Jon Pruter, and sister Rethal Ann DeGraw.

A celebration of Kay’s life will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, 
February 16, 2022, at the Peace Lutheran Church in Natoma, Kansas.&nbsp; 
Burial will follow at the Natoma Lutheran Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be 
from 9 AM to 8 PM on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at the mortuary in 
Russell, Kansas, with family greeting guests from 5 PM to 8 PM Tuesday 
evening.&nbsp; 

Memorials may be given to the Peace Lutheran Church and sent 
in care of the mortuary.&nbsp; Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, 
Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
