Clarice Kay Pruter, 84, of Russell, KS, passed away on Friday, February 11, 2022, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, KS.

Kay was born on December 12, 1937, in Hays, KS, the daughter of 
Clarence T. and Clara M. (Pfortmiller) Christensen.&nbsp; She grew up in 
Natoma, KS, and graduated from Natoma High School in 1955.&nbsp; Kay was 
united in marriage to Everett Pruter, Jr. on August 1, 1955, in Denver, 
Colorado.&nbsp; From this union, Kay and Jr. were blessed with six children: 
Kally, Brad, Carrie, Angie, Deena and Kenda.&nbsp; Kay was a talented 
musician and enjoyed playing the piano and organ.&nbsp; A lifetime member of 
Peace Lutheran Church, she shared her musical talents as the church 
organist for 60 years.&nbsp; She also served her community as an accompanist 
for countless school events, weddings and funerals.&nbsp; Kay was a hard 
worker and held several jobs outside the home while caring for her 
family.&nbsp; For many years, she worked alongside her husband as co-owner of
 Pruter’s Market in Natoma, where she not only provided a vital service 
to the community but also befriended many with her spunky attitude and 
caring nature.&nbsp; Of all her accomplishments, Kay’s children, 
grandchildren and great grandchildren were her greatest pride and joy.&nbsp; 
Kay is now reunited with her son, Brad, who died in an oilfield accident
 at the age of 22.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Surviving family include her daughters Kally McConkey (Mike) of 
Wamego, KS, Carrie Pruter of Salina, KS, Angie Koshgarian (Richard) of 
Salina, KS, Deena Ruggels (Vance) of Russell, KS, and Kenda Johnson 
(Mark) of Hays, KS; and brother Don Christensen (Liz); eight 
grandchildren Kyle and Craig (Ashley) McConkey, Alec and Brady (Amber) 
Ruggels and Cassidy (Benjamin) Miller, Carly, Truman and Sylvia Johnson;
 and eight great grandchildren Shaela, &nbsp;Libby, and Maddy McConkey, 
Cooper Gallagher, Layton Ruggels, Finley and Lily Ruggels, Hazel Miller;
 and dear friend Kelly Nuss of Natoma, KS.

Kay was preceded in death by her husband Jr., son Bradley Jon Pruter, and sister Rethal Ann DeGraw.

A celebration of Kay’s life will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, 
February 16, 2022, at the Peace Lutheran Church in Natoma, Kansas.&nbsp; 
Burial will follow at the Natoma Lutheran Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be 
from 9 AM to 8 PM on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at the mortuary in 
Russell, Kansas, with family greeting guests from 5 PM to 8 PM Tuesday 
evening.&nbsp; 

Memorials may be given to the Peace Lutheran Church and sent

George and Cooper Gier, of Russell, Kansas, died in a tragic car 
accident on Friday, February 11, 2022, in rural Russell County, Kansas.

George Cecil Gier was born on June 28, 1981, in Salina, Kansas, the 
son of Leo G. and Marian K. (Cooper) Gier.&nbsp; He grew up in Osborne, 
Kansas, and graduated from Osborne High School in the class of 1999.&nbsp; 
After high school he played football for 2 years at Highland Community 
College.&nbsp; He was united in marriage to Marcia Dawn Woodyard on October 
07, 2006 in Manhattan, Kansas.&nbsp; From this union they were blessed with 
two children Hailey and Cooper.&nbsp; He worked as a ranch hand and was 100% 
country and cowboy.&nbsp; He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in 
Russell, lifelong 4-H member, American Quarter Horse Association, and 
former Fire Chief in Wheaton, Kansas.&nbsp; He enjoyed spending time 
performing his ranch chores, tending cattle, being outdoors, working and
 competing in rodeos, working with his horses and cattle dogs, hunting 
and teaching his children to appreciate the things he loved.&nbsp; Most of 
all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, laughing, 
being a goof ball and having a good time.

Cooper Francis Gier was born on June 03, 2011, in Manhattan, Kansas, 
the son of George and Marcia (Woodyard) Gier.&nbsp; He attended Bickerdyke 
Elementary in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; He was a member of St. John Lutheran 
Church in Russell, Fossil Creek 4-H, Bickerdyke Bunch, 2 x 5 youth group
 and Russell Recreation football and basketball teams. &nbsp;He enjoyed 
helping his father with his ranch chores, pestering his sister, being 
outdoors, playing football, playing with his friends, spending time with
 his family and snuggling with his mom and dad.&nbsp;

Surviving family include wife and mother Marcia, daughter and sister 
Hailey both of the home; George’s parents Leo and Marian Gier of 
Osborne, Kansas; Marcia’s parents Daryl and Cathy Woodyard of Wamego, 
Kansas; George’s brother Garred Gier of Concordia, Kansas and Marcia’s 
brother Brandon Woodyard and wife Kristy of Denver, Colorado; George’s 
grandmother and Cooper’s great grandmother Lois Cooper of Lucas, Kansas.
 A celebration of George’s and Cooper’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. 
on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at the St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic
 Church in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; Burial will follow at the St. John Lutheran
 Cemetery in Russell.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M., Friday,

George and Cooper Gier

Edwin Carl Hofstetter, 100 years 8 months, passed away February 11, 
2022, at Providence Place in Kansas City, Kansas. Edwin was born June 
10, 1921, to Henry and Williamina (Beisner) Hofstetter at their home in 
rural Osborne County north of Natoma, Kansas. He graduated from Natoma 
High School. He joined the United States Army in 1942 and served as a 
Staff Sergeant in the European Theater of Operations during World War 
II. He left the military at the end of the war in October 1945. He 
received the American Theater Campaign Medal; World War II Victory 
Medal; EAME Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars; and a Good Conduct 
Medal.

He married Neita Luhman August 28, 1948. They lived at their farm 
north of Natoma where they raised their two sons. Edwin was a lifelong 
member of Peace Lutheran Church in Natoma and over the years served the 
congregation in several positions. He belonged to the Russell V.F.W. 
Post #6240, served on the Round Mound Township Board, and the Natoma 
School Board. After retiring from farming, Ed and Neita moved to their 
home in Natoma. They celebrated 65 years of marriage. Edwin enjoyed 
pitching horseshoes, playing basketball, playing pitch and pinochle, 
hunting, and watching K. U. sports. Most of all he enjoyed spending time
 with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren 
and laughing uncontrollably at a good joke.

Edwin is survived by his sons, Darrel Hofstetter and wife Nancy of 
Tonganoxie, Kansas, and Roy Hofstetter of Cummings, Kansas; and by seven
 grandchildren: Corbin Hofstetter and wife Barb of Shawnee, Kansas, 
Rachael Hofstetter of Smithville, Missouri, Andrea Hofstetter of Kansas 
City, Missouri, Janelle Martinelli and husband Byron of Parkville, 
Missouri, Chad Hofstetter of Cummings, Kansas, Kristyn Sweeney and 
husband Sean of Spring Hill, Kansas, Joshua Hofstetter and wife Rebecca 
of Carroll, Iowa, and by 12 great grandchildren. He is also survived by 
his younger brother Paul Hofstetter (96) and wife Deloris of Hill City, 
Kansas and many nieces and nephews.

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents, wife Neita, brother Ernest Hofstetter, and sister Frieda Pfortmiller.

Edwin’s funeral will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, February 18, 2022,

James Allen Brack, 81, passed away February 11, 2022, at Azria Health Woodhaven, Great Bend, KS.

He was born February 26, 1940, in Otis, KS the son of Vic and Virginia
 Pulliam Brack. A lifetime area resident he was a food service employee 
at Larned State Hospital.

He was a member of the eagle’s club and loved walking, boxing and the Dallas Cowboys.

Survivors include: his wife, Connie Siemsen, Great Bend; one step 
son, Danny Naab, West Hollywood, CA. and one brother, Donald Atteberry &nbsp;

He was preceded in death by one brother, Dickie Brack and two sisters, Vickie Patrick and Sharon Wilson

Graveside Service will be held at 2pm Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at 
the Larned Cemetery with Chaplain Caroline Morris presiding. Visitation 
will be from 9am to 8pm Monday February 14, 2022, at Beckwith Mortuary,

She was born March 17, 1959, in Butte, Montana, the daughter of Frank and Eloise Loveless Cenquigrana.

Moving from Denver, Colorado, she was an area resident for fourteen 
years. She worked as a store manager and was a member of Escue Chapel 
CME Church, Larned. She was a member of the red hat ladies, and had many
 hobbies: playing handball, running and working Caro Burger Diner with 
her husband, and when she was younger loved singing and putting on plays
 and playing the violin. She was very personable and a good people 
person.

She was the wife of Jeff Patterson and they had been together forty years.

Survivors include: husband, Jeff Patterson, Larned; son, Maxx 
Patterson, Larned; step son, Jeffery Patterson, Chicago, Illinois; two 
brothers, Frankie Cenquigrana, Jerome, Idaho, Jerry (Mila) Cenquigrana, 
Kingman, Arizona; step brother, Bob (Sherri) Lampi, Butte, Montana; four
 sisters, Carol Lampi, Brighton, Colorado, Effie Rule, Brighton, 
Colorado, Patty (Kevin) Bowers, Great Falls, Montana, Shawna

Linda Patterson

Arlinda
 Worthen, age 70, left this earthly life to be with her Savior on 
Friday, February 11, 2022, at Sunset Nursing Home, Concordia.&nbsp; She was 
born on Jan. 7, 1952, in Great Bend, KS to Albert M. &amp; Arlene E. 
(Erb) Klein.

She
 graduated from Hoisington High School in 1970 and graduated as one of 
the first nursing classes from Barton County Junior College.&nbsp; She worked
 as a labor and delivery nurse for several years, delivering several 
babies on her own when the doctor couldn’t make it in time.&nbsp; She later 
worked as a clinic nurse from Aug. 1, 1988, until her retirement on Aug. 
1, 2014.&nbsp; She was also known for teaching Lamaze classes in the varying 
different communities she lived.

She
 married Gregory Worthen on May 23, 1971, in Hoisington, KS.&nbsp; Their

She
 was a faithful member of The Baptist Church, Concordia and enjoyed 
serving in several capacities within the church.&nbsp; She belonged to the 
Christian Women’s Fellowship and a former EHU member.&nbsp;

Arlinda most enjoyed her role as a wife, mother and grandmother.&nbsp; This gave her great joy and happiness throughout her life.

She
 is survived by her husband, Greg, Concordia; son, Dr. Christopher 
Worthen (Kendra), Clay Center; daughter, Jennifer Keller (John), 
Manhattan; grandchildren, Emily, Kaitlyn, Bryce &amp; Ben Keller; 
sisters, Kathy Wood (Rick), Guam &amp; Cindy Strickland (Clif),

 as a labor and delivery nurse for several years, delivering several 
babies on her own when the doctor couldn’t make it in time.&nbsp; She later 
worked as a clinic nurse from Aug. 1, 1988, until her retirement on Aug. 
1, 2014.&nbsp; She was also known for teaching Lamaze classes in the varying 
different communities she lived.She
 married Gregory Worthen on May 23, 1971, in Hoisington, KS.&nbsp; Their 
married life took them from LaCrosse, KS to Salina, KS; Hays, KS;

Arlinda Worthen

Donovan Lyle "Don" Gatewood, 77, formerly of Aurora, CO passed away due to complications from Agent Orange, on January 13, 2022, in Rotonda West, Florida.

Don was born in Hays, Kansas, to Donovan and Virginia Gatewood on October 6, 1944. He attended St. Joseph's Military Academy and graduated in 1962. He went on to honorably serve our country in the United States Army, completing two tours in Vietnam. Later, he went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice. He worked as a Sales Rep for Tweco for 35 years. Don was an avid hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed good music, playing guitar, and he loved Classic Cars/Mopar.

Don is survived by his wife of 45 years, Judy of Rotonda West, FL, his daughter Erin (Ryan) Smith, daughter Niki Gatewood, son Jesse (Jazmine) Gatewood, sister Gwynne Van Scoyk, brother Stephen Fitz James, he has two grandchildren he adored and finally, his "Best Buddy," his dog - Corona.

Memorial services will be announced later.

Elizabeth G. “Beth” Carson, age 71, of Great Bend, Kansas passed away
 early on Saturday morning, February 12, 2022, at her Great Bend home.&nbsp; 
Beth was born on March 11, 1951, at Hays, Kansas, to Leon Lomas and 
Billiegene (Wickle) Snell.&nbsp; The family lived in Medicine Lodge, Kiowa, 
and Hutchinson prior to moving to Great Bend when Beth was young.&nbsp; She 
graduated from Great Bend High School in 1969.&nbsp; Beth was united in 
marriage to Benny H. Carson on December 11, 1990, at Great Bend.&nbsp; She 
worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant and Certified Medical Assistant 
for the former Cherry Village Residential Care in Great Bend (now 
MedicaLodge – Great Bend) for 29 years prior to her retirement in 2018.&nbsp;
 Beth enjoyed bowling, cross-stitch, playing cards, spending time with 
friends, and spoiling her grandkids.

Survivors include her husband, Benny H. Carson of Great 
Bend, Kansas; three sons:&nbsp; Jeff (&amp; Beth) Gillespie of Hitchcock,

Colton Alan Koch passed away on February 7, 2022, in Mankato.&nbsp; He was born August 27, 1994, to Michelle Hammer and Kevin Koch.&nbsp;

Colton was an energetic child, sometimes even a little mischievous.&nbsp; Colton
 spent many summers during his early years visiting his grandparent’s 
farm and later attended elementary school in Hutchinson. In 2009, Colton
 traveled a path that brought him to the home of Bob and Linda Gibson in
 Kensington.

Colton graduated from Thunder Ridge High School in 2013.&nbsp; He
 worked several jobs during his high school years, but one of his 
favorites was working for Levin Farms. He was so proud of his work that 
he had to have a senior picture taken in front of a cornfield that he 
had planted.&nbsp;

In 2014, Colton became a father with the 
birth of his daughter Carmen. In 2017, Colton met the love of his life, 
Kristen Clark. On July 4, 2018, they became engaged and began to build 
their life together in Topeka and later moved to Mankato. They added 
their daughter, Karter in 2019&nbsp; and their son, Colton II in 2021to their growing family. 

Besides work, he loved cheering for the 
Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas University Jayhawks, rebuilding cars 
and collecting guns.&nbsp; Colton 
worked a variety of jobs, before he took a keen interest in law 
enforcement and wanted to follow in the footsteps of his dad, Bob.&nbsp; Colton
 joined the Jewel County Sheriff's Department in December of 2019 and 
graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in August of 
2020.&nbsp;

Colton is survived by his fiancee, 
Kristen of the home; three children Carmen, Karter, and Colton II, 
parents; Michelle and John Whitehead of Satanta, Leon Kevin Koch of 
Hutchinson, and Bob and Linda Gibson of Kensington; two sisters, Nicole 
Coates of Manhattan and Malorie Gibson of 
Jacksonville, Florida; six brothers; Robbie Gibson of Cozad, Nebraska, 
Tyler Morrish of Kensington, Jordan Kirk of Jacksonville, Florida, Drew 
Kirk of Southern California, Kris (Megan) Whitehead of Joplin, Missouri,&nbsp; and
 Cody (Paige) Whitehead of Joplin, Missouri; Grandparents, Ruth and 
Chris Hammer of Sublette and Reta Griffin of Phillipsburg; and many 
aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and too many friends to count.&nbsp; He
 is preceded in death by a brother, JT Coates; Grandparents, Mary 
Delavan, Elvin Lambert, Fredrick and Shirley Koch; and Great 
Grandparents, Robert and Betty Hammer, Fred and Marge Wachs; and an 
uncle, Steven Gibson.

A celebration of Colton’s life will be 
held on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at 10:00 AM at the First St, John’s

Gladys Irene Cochran Pletcher born to Roy &amp; Nora Carter Cochran 
January 13, 1925, in Norway Kansas. Gladys passed away Friday, February 
11, 2022, at SunPorch in Smith Center, KS. 
 She graduated from Smith Center High School in 1944. She had 
several jobs from Western Kansas to Topeka. Worked at the local library
 when She met and married Abraham Lincoln Pletcher (Babe) December 26, 
1945. To this union was born two children: Dennis E and Catherine S.
 She enjoyed her flowers, bowling, golfing and being outside by traveling with husband and friends.
 He and Gladys continued to reside on their family farm until Feb 2013 when they moved to Smith Center. 
 She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 69 years, 
son-in-law Joseph Lanus and siblings Richard Cochran, Dorothy Chase, 
Keith Cochran , Caleb Cochran and Jean Bruno.
 Those mourning her death is son Dennis and wife Linda of Portis, 
daughter Catherine Lanus of Smith Center, grandsons: Daniel Pletcher and
 wife Julie of Portis, and Allen Lanus of Smith Center.

Gladys I. Pletcher

Barbara Faye King was born July 23, 1937, in the Little River, Kansas,&nbsp; hospital to Davis Edwin King, and Oneta Warburton King. She passed away
 February 12, 2022, at the age of 84 years, 6 months, and 20 days, at 
Hilltop Lodge, Beloit, Kansas. 
 Barbara grew up in Salina, Hunter, and Ash Grove, Kansas where she 
met and married Harvey Standley in April of 1954. Barbara and Harvey had
 3 children, Sandra, Susan, and Danny. They were divorced. Barbara was
 working at Excel in Smith Center, where she met Orville Dean Macklin. 
They were married in June of 1974, and Barbara worked as a dispatcher 
for Smith County Sheriff Department, Smith County Hospital, and Smith 
County EMS. Dean had 6 children, Jean, Pat, Dean LeRoy, Duane, Frank, 
and Susie. They made their home in Smith Center. Orville Dean passed 
away in 1996, leaving Barbara a widow. When she met Verle Kuiken, she 
was working as a Home Health Aide for the Health Department. They 
married in 1999. They were able to travel from one coast to the other 
at different times, and met many new friends along the way. 
 Barbara enjoyed going to the Library in Lebanon, lunch at LaDows, 
and her Bible Study days. She loved entertaining in her home, and 
decorating for special occasions. She kept busy making quilts, t-shirt 
quilts, crocheting, tatting, and doing many other crafts. Shopping with
 her girlfriends every month was one of her favorite pastimes, and a 
great memory for her. She loved being with her family and kept her 
grandchildren frequently to give their parents a break. 
 In November 2019, Barbara started having trouble with a cough, and 
was diagnosed with pneumonia. After two months, she had not recovered, 
she was referred to a Pulmonologist in Salina. Barbara was diagnosed at
 that time with Pulmonary Fibrosis. Learning about this disease and 
working to keep healthy, she began to use supplemental oxygen. This did
 not deter her though, and she continued to take care of Verle in their 
home. In March of 2021, Barbara and Verle moved to Hilltop Assisted 
Living, Beloit, Kansas. Throughout the two years she fought the 
disease, she never wavered in the faith or confidence that God was with 
her, and was in control. 
 The last few weeks were difficult for her, with her breathing 
becoming harder. Verle passed away in December 2021. Last week, she was
 transferred to the Hilltop Lodge Nursing Facility under the care of 
Solomon Valley Hospice. 
 Barbara is preceeded in death by her parents, husband Orville Dean, 
step-daughter Patty, brother Frankie King, Sister-in-law Kathy King, and
 husband Verle.
 She is survived by her daughters Sandi (Eldon) Preuss of Stuttgart, 
Kansas; Susan (Dean) Macklin of Olivia, North Carolina; and son Danny 
(Loretta) Standley of Wichita, Kansas; step children, Jean (Jim) Tharp 
of Smith Center, Kansas; Dean L. (Susan) Macklin of Olivia, North 
Carolina; Duane (Sheryl) Macklin of Smith Center, Kansas; Frank Macklin 
of Colorado Spring, Colorado; Susie (Darrell) Piner of Louisville, 
Colorado; grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren,
 nieces, nephews, cousins, and many many past coworkers and friends.

 3 children, Sandra, Susan, and Danny. They were divorced. Barbara was
 working at Excel in Smith Center, where she met Orville Dean Macklin. 
They were married in June of 1974, and Barbara worked as a dispatcher 
for Smith County Sheriff Department, Smith County Hospital, and Smith 
County EMS. Dean had 6 children, Jean, Pat, Dean LeRoy, Duane, Frank, 
and Susie. They made their home in Smith Center. Orville Dean passed 
away in 1996, leaving Barbara a widow. When she met Verle Kuiken, she 
was working as a Home Health Aide for the Health Department. They 
married in 1999. They were able to travel from one coast to the other 
at different times, and met many new friends along the way. 
 Barbara enjoyed going to the Library in Lebanon, lunch at LaDows, 
and her Bible Study days. She loved entertaining in her home, and 
decorating for special occasions. She kept busy making quilts, t-shirt 
quilts, crocheting, tatting, and doing many other crafts. Shopping with
 her girlfriends every month was one of her favorite pastimes, and a 
great memory for her. She loved being with her family and kept her 
grandchildren frequently to give their parents a break. 
 In November 2019, Barbara started having trouble with a cough, and 
was diagnosed with pneumonia. After two months, she had not recovered, 
she was referred to a Pulmonologist in Salina. Barbara was diagnosed at
 that time with Pulmonary Fibrosis. Learning about this disease and 
working to keep healthy, she began to use supplemental oxygen. This did
 not deter her though, and she continued to take care of Verle in their 
home. In March of 2021, Barbara and Verle moved to Hilltop Assisted 
Living, Beloit, Kansas. Throughout the two years she fought the 
disease, she never wavered in the faith or confidence that God was with 
her, and was in control. 
 The last few weeks were difficult for her, with her breathing 
becoming harder. Verle passed away in December 2021. Last week, she was
 transferred to the Hilltop Lodge Nursing Facility under the care of 
Solomon Valley Hospice. 
 Barbara is preceeded in death by her parents, husband Orville Dean, 
step-daughter Patty, brother Frankie King, Sister-in-law Kathy King, and
 husband Verle.
 She is survived by her daughters Sandi (Eldon) Preuss of Stuttgart, 
Kansas; Susan (Dean) Macklin of Olivia, North Carolina; and son Danny 
(Loretta) Standley of Wichita, Kansas; step children, Jean (Jim) Tharp 
of Smith Center, Kansas; Dean L. (Susan) Macklin of Olivia, North 
Carolina; Duane (Sheryl) Macklin of Smith Center, Kansas; Frank Macklin 
of Colorado Spring, Colorado; Susie (Darrell) Piner of Louisville, 
Colorado; grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren,

Barbara Faye Kuiken

Alvina (Becker) Mai, a resident of the 
Hays area for more than 60 years, was born on August 10, 1924, near Ft. 
Collins, CO and died at age 97 on Feb. 11, 2022, in Kansas City, Kansas.&nbsp;

Her parents were Gottfried and 
Katherine Elizabeth (Mehling) Becker, who were German-Russian 
immigrants.&nbsp; She grew up on the family farm near Timnath, CO, the 
youngest of seven children, and was proud of her heritage.

Alvina graduated from Timnath High 
School in May 1943, and then attended Barnes Business College in 
Denver.&nbsp; She graduated from Barnes in 1944, and took a position at 
Poudre Valley National Bank in Ft. Collins until 1948.

On August 27, 1948, Alvina married Paul
 R. Mai at Evangelical Lutheran &amp; Reformed Church in Ft. Collins, 
CO.&nbsp; The couple moved to Logan, Kansas, where they began their life 
together.&nbsp; To this union two children were born: Kenneth and Janet.

Paul, Alvina, and family moved to 
Stockton, KS, in 1954, and in 1956 they moved to Plainville, KS, where 
they lived for 51 years. They were active with First Lutheran Church of 
Plainville, and also enjoyed polka dancing, square dancing, and playing 
cards with friends.&nbsp; Alvina worked for Plainville State Bank from 1960 
to 1983.&nbsp; She and Paul moved to Hays, KS in 2007.&nbsp; There they were 
active members of Trinity Lutheran Church, and Alvina was part of the 
church quilting group.&nbsp;

In April of 2013, Alvina’s husband, 
Paul, passed away at age 95.&nbsp; They enjoyed 64 1/2 years of married life 
together.&nbsp; After living in Hays for an additional 7 years, Alvina moved 
to Kansas City, KS in November of 2020 to live with her son and his 
wife, and later moved to Providence Place Long Term Care in Kansas City,
 KS.&nbsp;

Alvina had a gentle spirit and a strong
 faith in God.&nbsp; She was kind-hearted and generous.&nbsp; She loved cooking 
for her family, often using old family recipes. &nbsp;She had many talents 
and hobbies that she enjoyed throughout her years, first and foremost 
quilting, and also crocheting, various crafts, and diamond painting.&nbsp;

Alvina always said that her favorite 
activity was spending time with her family. Being part of two large 
families, reunions were always a special time for her. &nbsp;She was warm and
 caring, and had many friends throughout her years. &nbsp;Alvina was 
well-loved, and will be missed greatly by her family. &nbsp;We are thankful 
for the many wonderful memories she gave us.

Survivors include: son Ken (Sandy) Mai 
of Kansas City, KS; daughter Janet (Pete) Ziegler of Streamwood, IL; two
 grand-daughters, April Mai of Overland Park, KS; and Angela (Chris) 
Bargiel of Las Vegas, NV; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of 
friends.

Alvina was preceded in death by her 
husband, Paul Mai; her parents, Gottfried and Katherine Becker; her 
brothers, Godfred ‘Scotty’ Becker and Dave Becker; her sisters Lydia 
Schildknecht, Mollie (Blehm) Thayer, Rachel Smithey, and Hannah Mai; and

A funeral service will be at 11:15 am 
on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hays, 
followed by a luncheon in the church basement.&nbsp; The burial will be at 
9:30 am on Wednesday in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Trego Center, KS.&nbsp; 
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:30 on Tuesday at Hays Memorial 
Chapel Funeral Home and from 10:45 am until service time on Wednesday at
 the church.&nbsp;

Nancy J. Norton, 67, passed away February 12, 2022, at Rush County Memorial Hospital, La Crosse.

She was born April 21, 1954, in Dodge City, the daughter of John E. and Margaret L Schweitzer Collins.

A lifetime area resident she was of the Christian faith. She worked 
for the Colorado Interstate Gas reading meters. She loved her family and
 animals. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, gardening and her flowers, 
plants and fish pond.

Survivors include: two sons, Greg Andrews Jr., Larned, Nick Norton, 
North Eastern Kansas; daughter, Tallusa (Michael) Minor, La Crosse; 
three sisters, Marty (Daryl) Dinkel, Garden City, Kelly (Joe Hoffman) 
Collins, Rozel, Virginia (Dale) Patterson, Garden City; brother, Mike 
Collins, Garden City; six grandchildren, Gavin Andrews, Jesicka Norton,

Linda (Beaty) King, age 76, passed peacefully in Wichita, Kansas, on January 29, 2022. 
 Linda was born in Springfield, Missouri where she lived until 1949 
when she and her parents, Dr. Gene and Fran Beaty, moved to Manhattan 
for her dad to establish his dental practice. Linda graduated from 
Manhattan High School in 1963. She attended Colorado Women’s College for
 one year after receiving an honorary scholarship. She returned to 
Manhattan, completed a year at Kansas State University and became a 
member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. Linda married Phil King in 1965. They 
initially made their home in Hays, Kansas while Phil attended Fort Hays 
State. Later they moved to Manhattan and then on to the Kansas City 
area. They had two sons, Aaron and Adam King. Phil and Linda were 
divorced in1994.
 Linda had an extensive career as a legal secretary including many 
years working in the Kansas City area. Some of her favorite pastimes 
included traveling, visiting historical sites, being in nature, 
decorating for the holidays and cheering loudly during KSU, Chiefs and 
Royals games. Linda greatly enjoyed attending her son's activities and 
sporting events. Later in life she treasured the time she spent 
babysitting her grandchildren who fondly called her “Gaga”. Linda’s 
family brought her such joy. She was a loving mother, grandmother, 
sister, aunt and friend who will be greatly missed.
 Linda was preceded in death by her parents Dr. Eugene (Gene) and 
Frances (Fran) Beaty and a stillborn brother. She is survived by her two
 sons, Aaron King of Kansas City, Missouri; Adam (Katie) King of 
Shawnee, Kansas; two grandchildren, Harper and Truman King of Shawnee, 
Kansas; sister Carol (Robert) McGaughey of Wichita, Kansas and niece, 
Kate McGaughey of Chicago, Illinois.

Alan M. Hanna

Alys Virginia Wangari was born August 14, 2017, in Olathe, KS to Denis 
and Angela (Fortin) Wangari. She passed away January 30, 2022, in Denver,
 CO at the age of 4.
 Alys attended the Oberlin Preschool. She loved to dance, walk, drum,
 and sign and sing her ABCs. Most of all, she loved playing with her 
family. Alys will be remembered for how strong, smart, and sassy she was
 and her contagious beautiful smile. 
 Alys is survived by her father, Denis Wangari; mother, Angela Fortin
 Wangari; brother, Walter Wangari, all of Oberlin and grandparents: Jack
 K. and Donna V. Fortin and Lucy Kirubi.

Alys Virginia Wangari

Darrell D. Brensing, age 86, of Manhattan, went home to be with his LORD and Savior on February 9, 2022.
 Darrell was born September 23, 1935, in Great Bend, Kansas, the son 
of Jakie F. and Hulda H. Brensing of Hudson, Kansas. He was a resident 
of Manhattan since 1969.
 Darrell received his Associate of Arts Degree from Hutchinson 
Community College, his Bachelor of Arts degree from Ft. Hays State 
University, his Master of Arts degree from Pittsburg State University, 
and his Ph.D. from Kansas State University. He married Patricia L. 
Ginder of Stafford, Kansas on July 29, 1956. 
 Darrell began his professional career as an Industrial Arts teacher 
with the Hutchinson Public Schools in Hutchinson, Kansas in 1957. He 
later started the first Distributive Education Cooperative program in 
the Hutchinson Public School System and was recognized as the “Father of
 Vocational Education” in Hutchinson as he started numerous vocational 
education programs while employed there. 
 In 1969, Darrell was hired by the USD 383 school system as Director 
of the Manhattan Area Vocational Technical School, now known as 
Manhattan Area Technical College. He served in this capacity for 7 years
 and was credited with establishing numerous innovative programs for the
 school, recognized as one of the outstanding vocational technical 
schools in the nation. In January 1976, he took a break from the 
education field and entered the banking business, joining Walt and Alan 
Bell as Vice President of Citizens State Bank. His love of educating 
students caused him to return to the education field in 1977, when he 
joined the American Institute of Baking as director of education when 
the institute moved from Chicago to Manhattan. He was later promoted to
 Vice President of Education and enjoyed a 20-year career with AIB. In 
this capacity he spoke throughout the world on a variety of topics as 
well as to national and international trade organizations. His ability 
to design and develop innovative programs earned him the distinction of 
being recognized in Who’s Who in Kansas, Who’s Who in the Midwest, 
Outstanding Educators in America and Strathmore’s Who’s Who Registry of 
Business Leaders. 
 Darrell’s greatest satisfaction was assisting young men and women in
 gaining employment and seeing them succeed in a rewarding career. To 
assist them in obtaining gainful employment, he authored the book, 
“Marketing Yourself, Making the Most of What You’ve Got.” He dedicated 
this book to his grandchildren in case he wasn’t around to assist them 
in their job search when they needed his advice and counsel. 
 Darrell was an active member of the Manhattan Rotary Club, serving 
as president of the club in 1982-1983. He was named Rotary 
International Paul Harris Fellow in 1991. One of his greatest pleasures
 in Rotary was to start the Kansas State University Rotaract Club in

 </figure>Darrell D. Brensing, age 86, of Manhattan, went home to be with his LORD and Savior on February 9, 2022.
 Darrell was born September 23, 1935, in Great Bend, Kansas, the son 
of Jakie F. and Hulda H. Brensing of Hudson, Kansas. He was a resident 
of Manhattan since 1969.
 Darrell received his Associate of Arts Degree from Hutchinson 
Community College, his Bachelor of Arts degree from Ft. Hays State 
University, his Master of Arts degree from Pittsburg State University, 
and his Ph.D. from Kansas State University. He married Patricia L. 
Ginder of Stafford, Kansas on July 29, 1956. 
 Darrell began his professional career as an Industrial Arts teacher 
with the Hutchinson Public Schools in Hutchinson, Kansas in 1957. He 
later started the first Distributive Education Cooperative program in 
the Hutchinson Public School System and was recognized as the “Father of
 Vocational Education” in Hutchinson as he started numerous vocational 
education programs while employed there. 
 In 1969, Darrell was hired by the USD 383 school system as Director 
of the Manhattan Area Vocational Technical School, now known as 
Manhattan Area Technical College. He served in this capacity for 7 years
 and was credited with establishing numerous innovative programs for the
 school, recognized as one of the outstanding vocational technical 
schools in the nation. In January 1976, he took a break from the 
education field and entered the banking business, joining Walt and Alan 
Bell as Vice President of Citizens State Bank. His love of educating 
students caused him to return to the education field in 1977, when he 
joined the American Institute of Baking as director of education when 
the institute moved from Chicago to Manhattan. He was later promoted to
 Vice President of Education and enjoyed a 20-year career with AIB. In 
this capacity he spoke throughout the world on a variety of topics as 
well as to national and international trade organizations. His ability 
to design and develop innovative programs earned him the distinction of 
being recognized in Who’s Who in Kansas, Who’s Who in the Midwest, 
Outstanding Educators in America and Strathmore’s Who’s Who Registry of 
Business Leaders. 
 Darrell’s greatest satisfaction was assisting young men and women in
 gaining employment and seeing them succeed in a rewarding career. To 
assist them in obtaining gainful employment, he authored the book, 
“Marketing Yourself, Making the Most of What You’ve Got.” He dedicated 
this book to his grandchildren in case he wasn’t around to assist them 
in their job search when they needed his advice and counsel. 
 Darrell was an active member of the Manhattan Rotary Club, serving 
as president of the club in 1982-1983. He was named Rotary 
International Paul Harris Fellow in 1991. One of his greatest pleasures
 in Rotary was to start the Kansas State University Rotaract Club in 
1990 and served as their sponsor or co-sponsor until 2016.

Allen R. Cunningham, age 62, of WaKeeney, Kansas, passed away 
Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital. 
Allen was born in WaKeeney on December 28, 1959, to Samuel L. and Mary 
Jane (Aschenbrenner) Cunningham.

Allen graduated from the Kansas School for the Deaf in Olathe, 
Kansas, and went on to be an automotive mechanic. He greatly enjoyed 
traveling, metal detecting, golfing, coin collecting, and was an avid 
Kansas City Chiefs fan as well as KU Jayhawks basketball.

Allen is survived by his mother, Mary Jane; sisters Lori Mahagan of 
Castle Rock, Colorado, and Julie A. Cunningham (Joseph Lupomech) of North
 Platte, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his father Samuel, and 
twin infant siblings.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, 
February 14, 2022, at Christ the King Catholic Church with Father 
Charles Steier as celebrant. Burial will then follow at the church 
cemetery.

Peter Anthony “Big Pete” Gonzales, age 28, of Hays, Kansas passed away Tuesday, December 21, 2021, in Hays. He was born April 16, 1993, in LaCrosse, Kansas to Arthur Larry Gonzales SR. and Delia Frausto Gonzales – Garcia. Peter enjoyed watching football and never missed a game. Peter was a huge fan of the KANSAS CITY CHIEFS. He enjoyed watching Monday night wrestling with dad. Any chance he got outside of family and work he spent time with his friends eating out and traveling. In elementary school Peter played for the Rush County Cats #67. In middle school he played for the LaCrosse Cubs #66 as a nose tackle on defense and played 2 years in High School for LaCrosse Leopards. In 2012 he graduated Lacrosse High School and took on the role of taking care of his dad after his mother passed away in March of 2012. Shortly after he moved to California where he worked at Crate &amp; Barrel in Tracy and lived with his sister Georgina and family in Manteca California. About a year later Peter and his dad moved back to Hays Kansas where Peter took on a Job at Sonic and became manager from 2013 - 2020. Later he took another position at Wendy’s in Hays as manager which was his last job. This is a crazy, hurtful world we live in full of sickness and sorrow. We wish there was a finger we could snap and change things. But we can’t. There is no magic button, no string to pull, and not a single verse in the bible that will change how we live our lives or how the universe runs its course. God has taken somebody from us. He was an angel in disguise. When our mother passed in 2012, he dropped everything he had planned in life to take care of our dad. Our brother was a hard worker like our parents and never gave up. He took on responsibility that wasn't his. He never stopped. When he needed help, he didn't ask, He figured a way to fix whatever the situation was. We are so proud of the person he became. This past Thanksgiving he met a lady that didn’t have funds to feed her family. My brother made it possible for her. He took her to Wal-Mart and told her to get everything she needed, and he would pay for it, no questions asked. At that moment is when we knew our parents raised a fine, well, respecting young man with a heart of gold that nobody could take away from him. But this new Era we live in did take it. This horrible disease we deal with today took our beloved brother. He tried to fight off this disease and just couldn’t, he got sick. Our brother went to sleep and didn't wake up. That is what this disease did to him. Our brother gave his life up to take care of his family. He never asked for help for anything. This has hit us at the wrong time of the year and unexpectedly. This Covid 19 disease isn't going away. But it’s taking our loved ones away from us. Peter was just 28 years old. He was born in a small town of LaCrosse Kansas. He played football in his middle school years and throughout his high school years at LaCrosse High Schooling wearing jersey #66. Peter loved sports and watching Monday night wrestling. His all-time favorite sport was football. Every Monday night Peter and our dad would cook dinner together and watch wrestling. Peter Anthony 'Big Pete' Gonzales

Mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, Christian, farm wife, nurse, 
home economics teacher, and foster parent — Burdett resident Billie Mae 
(Herndon) Thompson, 86, passed away on February 9. Born December 24, 
1935, in Halltown, Missouri, she was the daughter of William Howard and 
Lethia Pearl (Winfree) Herndon.&nbsp;

Billie met her husband John while in nurse's training in St. Louis. 
They married on Valentine’s Day 1959, so it’s fitting that they’re now 
reunited before their anniversary after 61 years of marriage. Even as a 
registered nurse, she spent much of her time as a farm wife as most farm
 wives do — making meals for the crew, driving grain trucks and 
tractors.

While raising two kids, she also worked as a nurse at St. Joseph 
Hospital in Larned for a few years and led education classes, ultimately
 inspiring her love of teaching. Billie eventually went on to achieve a 
bachelor of science from Fort Hays State University. The degree 
empowered her to teach Home Economics in Hanston while continuing to 
help on the farm. Once Billie’s two children were grown, she and John 
looked for new ways to serve together and helped raise foster children 
for several years.&nbsp;

Billie loved traveling, learning, and sharing her skills with others —
 spending hours and hours passing along meticulous sewing and baking 
tips to her granddaughters. She valued family and was proud of her 
grandchildren’s achievements.

Survivors include: a daughter, Robin (Bill) Niederee of Great Bend; a
 son, Marshall Thompson of Burdett; sisters, Ellen Reed of Friendship, 
Tennessee, and Joyce Roerig of Goose Creek, South Carolina; a brother, 
William Herndon of Mount Vernon, Missouri; two grandsons, Daniel 
(Heather) Thompson of Hanston and Dillon Thompson of Burdett; three 
granddaughters, Katlyn (Jonathan) Rosborough of Washington, D.C., 
Allison Niederee of Los Angeles, Sarah Niederee of Buffalo, New York; 
four great-grandchildren, Wyatt, William, and Annabeth Thompson, and 
James Rosborough.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John Thompson; and sister Helen Smart of Republic, Missouri.

Pastor Doug Ellison of the Faith Fellowship Church (located 6.5 miles
 West of Burdett turn North ¼ mile) will preside over the memorial 
service in Hanston at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 14, 2022. The

Billie Mae (Herndon) Thompson

Leonard J. “Lenny” Dinkel, 62, Hays, died Thursday, February 10, 2022, at his home.

He was born March 6, 1959, in WaKeeney, 
the son of Ralph and Rubina (Scheck) Dinkel.&nbsp; He grew up in Oakley and 
was a graduate of Oakley High School in 1977.&nbsp; On May 26, 1979, Lenny was
 united in marriage to Christine A. Hoover at Immaculate Conception 
Catholic Church in Grinnell.&nbsp; He worked in the oilfield and was 
production manager for Gore Oil Company.&nbsp; He was a member of Immaculate 
Heart of Mary Catholic Church and H.O.G., the Harley Owners Group.&nbsp; He 
proudly attended his grandson's sporting events, and enjoyed fishing, 
motorcycling, and driving his 2016 Challenger.&nbsp; He was an avid Kansas 
City Chiefs and NASCAR fan, who looked forward to attending the races 
with his wife in Kansas City twice a year.

 Hays, two daughters: Krystal Randa and husband David of Hays and Kelsie
 Bausch and husband Trevor of Basehor, two brothers: David Dinkel and

will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Monday and from 10:00 am until 10:45

 </figure>Leonard J. “Lenny” Dinkel, 62, Hays, died Thursday, February 10, 2022, at his home.He was born March 6, 1959, in WaKeeney, 
the son of Ralph and Rubina (Scheck) Dinkel.&nbsp; He grew up in Oakley and 
was a graduate of Oakley High School in 1977.&nbsp; On May 26, 1979, Lenny was
 united in marriage to Christine A. Hoover at Immaculate Conception 
Catholic Church in Grinnell.&nbsp; He worked in the oilfield and was 
production manager for Gore Oil Company.&nbsp; He was a member of Immaculate 
Heart of Mary Catholic Church and H.O.G., the Harley Owners Group.&nbsp; He 
proudly attended his grandson's sporting events, and enjoyed fishing, 
motorcycling, and driving his 2016 Challenger.&nbsp; He was an avid Kansas 
City Chiefs and NASCAR fan, who looked forward to attending the races 
with his wife in Kansas City twice a year.Survivors include his wife Christine of
 Hays, two daughters: Krystal Randa and husband David of Hays and Kelsie
 Bausch and husband Trevor of Basehor, two brothers: David Dinkel and

Leonard J. 'Lenny' Dinkel

Jeanette Faye Taylor passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2022, in Garden 
City, Kansas surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 
20, 1938, in Garden City to Elmer and Eva "Mae" Blackwell Fletcher. 
She grew up on a farm in the small community of Marienthal, Kansas, 
where she attended grade school graduating as valedictorian of her 8th 
grade class, then graduating from Leoti High School in 1956. 
 On April 5, 1962, Jeanette married the love of her life, Dale 
Taylor. They moved to Garden City in 1967 where they raised their 
family. Jeanette worked as a bookkeeper at local pharmacies. She 
volunteered at St. Catherine Hospital, Fry Eye Clinic, and the Finney 
County Senior Center where she also spent many hours playing cards with 
the many friends she made there. Jeanette's favorite thing was 
spending time with her children and grandchildren. She had many great 
friends and was loved by all. She will be greatly missed. 
 Survivors include her children, Tina Roe (Bruce) of Goodland, 
Kansas, Brenda (Robert) Short, Macon, MO, and Alisa (Steve) Emick of 
Garden City, Kansas, 5 grandchildren and 5 great- grandchildren. 
 She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. 
 Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 12, 2022, at 
Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City at 10:00 AM with graveside service 
immediately following. Burial will be at Scott County Cemetery in

Jeanette Faye Taylor

Yvonne Robbins, 82, passed away February 7th, 2022, 
peacefully at her home in Olathe, surrounded by her loving family. 
Yvonne was born in Kinsley, KS, on July 17, 1939.&nbsp; She spent her 
childhood growing up in central Kansas and always had an appreciation 
and love of the prairieland, the hard-working people of this area and 
the educational opportunities for young people.&nbsp; She married William Rex
 “WR” Robbins in Kinsley, KS, on October 20th, 1957, and to 
this union, they were blessed with three children – Karesa, Penny and 
Monte.&nbsp; Yvonne was a devoted mother and grandmother and a supportive 
wife.

Yvonne devoted her energy to business, educational and philanthropic 
initiatives over the years. She assisted her husband as they worked 
together in growing Farmers Bank and Trust, a community bank located in 
central and eastern Kansas. She was instrumental in developing programs 
at Farmers Bank which offered travel and benefits for customers. Yvonne 
established educational scholarships at Barton Community College, Dodge 
City Community College and Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; She focused on 
opportunities to enhance the community through her work with nonprofit 
organizations and church affiliations.&nbsp; In addition, Yvonne enjoyed 
working alongside her husband in his efforts while President of the 
Kansas Bankers Association and created many friendships along the way.

She was particularly devoted to her children and grandchildren, 
supporting all of them in numerous academic opportunities, athletic 
activities, business endeavors, music and the arts and military 
service.&nbsp; Her consistent kind and gentle demeanor was always a bright 
light in her interactions with others.&nbsp; Although impacted by Alzheimer’s
 in her later years, it was important for her to use her time left to 
support and connect with her family.

Yvonne is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, WR Robbins of 
the home; her children, Karesa Harrison, Penny Kirk and Monte Robbins; 
and grandchildren, Chadd Harrison, Hunter Harrison, Garrett Kirk, Taylor
 Kirk, Nicole Robbins and Will Robbins.

A celebration of life for Yvonne will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 15th,
 2022, at First United Methodist Church in Great Bend, KS, with Reverend
 Tim Bever presiding.&nbsp; Visitation with the family will take place at 
1:00 p.m. at the church prior to services.&nbsp; Interment will be in the 
Great Bend Cemetery.&nbsp; 

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests 
contributions be made in Yvonne’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association,
 in care of Bryant Funeral Home. The family extends their appreciation 
to friends and caregivers who cared so lovingly for Yvonne during her 
journey with Alzheimer’s.&nbsp;
