Jesse Don Smith, 46, of Russell, Kansas, died&nbsp;suddenly&nbsp;from&nbsp;diabetic&nbsp;complications&nbsp;on Friday, February 25, 2022, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

A&nbsp;celebration of Jesse’s life will be held at 11 A.M. on Tuesday, March 01, 2022,&nbsp;at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler&nbsp;Mortuary in Russell, Kansas. &nbsp;Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Monday, February 28, 2022, with&nbsp;family&nbsp;to&nbsp;greet guests from 6&nbsp;P.M.&nbsp;to 8&nbsp;P.M. Monday&nbsp;evening&nbsp;at the mortuary.

Jesse was born on March 20, 1975,&nbsp;in Russell, Kansas, the son of&nbsp;Roy Smith&nbsp;and Meri Cathlene McLain. &nbsp;He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the&nbsp;class of 1993. &nbsp;He was united in marriage to Tina Sarver on&nbsp;July 8, 2006&nbsp;in Hays, Kansas. &nbsp;From this union they&nbsp;were blessed with three children Ravyn, Ayden and D.J.Smith.&nbsp;&nbsp;Even though their marriage&nbsp;ended in divorce they worked hard&nbsp;together in raising their children.&nbsp;&nbsp;Jesse was also blessed with&nbsp;three grandchildren&nbsp;Thackery, Jayce, and Adelynn.&nbsp;Jesse was very interested in his&nbsp;Scottish&nbsp;and Indian heritage&nbsp;researching and displaying it in his home.&nbsp;

During&nbsp;high school&nbsp;he worked at the Dairy Queen&nbsp;until he graduated. &nbsp;For several years Jesse worked for&nbsp;Wheel Chairs of Kansas as a&nbsp;CNC programmer and&nbsp;operator, also&nbsp;operating&nbsp;their&nbsp;plasma laser equipment. His next&nbsp;job&nbsp;was&nbsp;working for&nbsp;Hutchinson Vending Company&nbsp;as a route driver&nbsp;in&nbsp;western Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;Recently he&nbsp;was working&nbsp;for the USD 407 Russell High&nbsp;School as a custodian. &nbsp;He enjoyed playing video games with his&nbsp;children, listening&nbsp;to his favorite&nbsp;music, playing guitar andsinging. &nbsp;Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and especially enjoying activities with his children.

Surviving family include his mother Cathy McClain of the home, his&nbsp;children Ravyn,&nbsp;Ayden&nbsp;and D.J. Smith all from Hays, Kansas; step brothers Gary McClain and wife Diana of Kansas City, Kansas and David McClain and wife Lorraine of&nbsp;Lawrence, Kansas&nbsp;and&nbsp;step sister Mary&nbsp;McClain of Hays, Kansas.

He was preceded in&nbsp;death by his&nbsp;dad&nbsp;Roy Smith,&nbsp;step dad Dwane McClain and brothers&nbsp;Billy Smith, Keith Smith and sister Wendy&nbsp;Smith&nbsp;Cox&nbsp;also his grandparents and great-grandparents.

Marilyn Wilbur, age 89, passed away on Monday, February 28, 2022, at 
the Wichita County Hospital in Leoti, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on October 
14, 1932, in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of William and Gertrude 
O’Neal Vanderhoff.

Marilyn graduated from North High School in Wichita, Kansas in 1949.&nbsp;
 On April 29, 1950, she married Robert E. Wilbur in Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp; He
 passed away on February 16, 1997, in Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp; She and her 
husband farmed for many years in the Wichita, Kansas, Leoti, Kansas, 
Colorado &amp; Arkansas areas.&nbsp; She owned and operated a children’s 
clothing store, and also was a realtor for Jeff Lange Real Estate in 
Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp; She loved spending time with her family.

She was a member of EHU, PTA, Bridge Club, Dance Club, Girl Scout Leader, Sunday School Teacher, and Real Estate Association.

Marilyn is survived by her children - Gary &amp; Beth Wilbur of 
Leoti, Kansas, Janice &amp; Roxy Campas of Leoti, Kansas, Larry Wilbur 
of Leoti, Kansas, Mark &amp; Barbie Wilbur of Leoti, Kansas, Mary &amp; 
Jeff Sterling of Garden City, Kansas, Sixteen Grandchildren, 
Thirty-Three Great Grandchildren, and Four Great Great Grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, One Sister - Betty 
Brady, One Brother - Bill Vanderhoff, One Son - Robert Alan Wilbur, One 
Daughter-In-Law - Marilyn Joyce Wilbur, and One Granddaughter - Wendy 
Marie Wilbur.

Graveside Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2022,
 at the Greenwood Cemetery, 6231 W. 47th St., Wichita, Kansas with Gary 
Salmans presiding.

Visitation will be from 12:30 until 1:30 on Thursday at the cemetery.

Luella Grace (McIntyre) Smith

Lelia Marie Norden Grauerholz passed away February 28, 2022, at the 
age of 99. She was born on March 8, 1922, to Henry (Hank) and Ida Norden.
 She attended grade school in a one room school one mile from the family
 farm south of Kensington.

She married Harold Grauerholz in a double wedding ceremony on June 
27, 1943. Her brother, Floyd, married Anna Grauerholz in this ceremony 
as well.

After Harold’s return from the army, they farmed northwest of 
Kensington. She was active in the St. John Lutheran church. She was a 
member of the quilting ladies at this church for 70 years. She also 
taught Sunday school and grew flowers for the altar. Her spring and 
summer evenings were spent taking care of her flower garden.

Surviving family includes her children Eldon Grauerholz, from 
Cimarron, KS; Jo Ann (Joe) Wahrman from Goodland, KS, and Alan (Aggie) 
Grauerholz from Kensington, KS who still lives on the family homestead. 
Grandchildren, Bryan (Bonny) Grauerholz , and Scott Grauerholz from 
Kansas City, KS; John Grauerholz and &nbsp;Jared (Whitney) Grauerholz of 
Kensington, KS, and great grandchildren – Brooke, Bree and Henry 
Grauerholz.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Harold, her 
brothers Wilbur, Floyd and Donald, her sister-in-laws, Ester Norden and 
Anna Norden and Loretta Norden.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in Kensington.&nbsp; 
Inurnment will take place in the Germantown Cemetery north of 
Kensington.

Dr. Francis R. Applegate Jr., 92, 
Hays, died Sunday, February 27, 2022, at HaysMed surrounded by his 
family following a long battle with cancer.

He was born January 30, 1930, in Kansas 
City, Missouri, the oldest child of Francis R. Sr. and Charlieann 
Applegate. He was a graduate of Shawnee Mission High School and earned 
his doctorate at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.

Francis, or as most people called him, 
Ted, was dedicated to his work.&nbsp; Ted spent time in the U.S. Army as a 
resident anesthesiologist. &nbsp;Following the Army, he began working in 
family practice when he then made the decision to become an 
ophthalmologist, moving the family to Oklahoma City while he attended 
The University of Oklahoma School of Medicine.&nbsp; Finally, settling in 
Hays, he helped open Eye Specialists where he practiced until he 
retired.

Through his years of practice and into 
retirement, Ted never missed his children’s or grandchildren’s 
activities. He was a man of many hobbies, some of which include, 
beekeeper, candlemaker, carpenter, winemaker, quilter, and teacher, but 
most remember him for his passion for playing bridge and making bread.

Some of his grandchildren’s favorite 
memories include him delivering dictionaries to the fifth graders of USD
 489, reading to the kindergarteners at Lincoln Elementary school where 
he was given the nickname of Grandpa Ted E. Bear, and teaching several 
cooking classes at Hays High School.

Survivors include his wife; Haven 
Applegate of Hays, son; Troy Applegate and wife Connie of Celina, Texas,
 and grandchildren; Kalee, Courtney, and Koby Daily, Alexandra and 
Ashley Applegate, and Brooke and Sadie Fox.

He was preceded in death by his parents
 Francis R. Sr. and Charlieann Applegate, brothers; Rodney and Evan 
Applegate, and children; Darin Applegate, Kirsten Daily, and Noelle Fox.
 &nbsp;

A Memorial Service will be at 2:00 pm 
on Saturday, March 12, 2022, at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with 
Pastor Brant Rice officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in Fort Hays 
Memorial Gardens.&nbsp; The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until 
service time.&nbsp;

Donna F.&nbsp;Dietz, 100,&nbsp;passed away&nbsp;at&nbsp;Northcare&nbsp;Hospice House in&nbsp;North Kansas&nbsp;City, MO, on February 26, 2022. She
 was&nbsp;born&nbsp;August 30, 1921, in rural Ida County, Iowa, to Henry W. and 
Olga M.&nbsp;(Grefe)&nbsp;Kuhlken.&nbsp;Donna&nbsp;grew up on a&nbsp;farm&nbsp;and graduated 
from&nbsp;Cushing&nbsp;High School.&nbsp;Afterward, she&nbsp;attended&nbsp;Nettleton&nbsp;Business 
Training College in Sioux City, IA.&nbsp;After&nbsp;graduation, Donna&nbsp;worked&nbsp;in 
the accounting&nbsp;department&nbsp;of Mid-Continent Airlines in Sioux Falls, SD, 
and then Kansas City, MO.&nbsp;There&nbsp;she&nbsp;met&nbsp;Norbert&nbsp;W.&nbsp;Dietz and&nbsp;they 
were&nbsp;united&nbsp;in&nbsp;marriage&nbsp;on October 19, 1946, at&nbsp;St. John&nbsp;Lutheran Church
 in&nbsp;Cushing, IA.&nbsp;They&nbsp;were&nbsp;married&nbsp;for 55&nbsp;years&nbsp;until his&nbsp;death&nbsp;in 2002. For
 many&nbsp;years Donna&nbsp;was&nbsp;an active member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 
Kansas City, MO, where she faithfully served as&nbsp;church&nbsp;financial 
secretary.&nbsp;She&nbsp;also&nbsp;was&nbsp;an active member of 
the&nbsp;PTA.&nbsp;Donna&nbsp;enjoyed&nbsp;gardening, crocheting, listening to 
all&nbsp;kinds&nbsp;of&nbsp;music, feeding backyard birds, and was&nbsp;devoted&nbsp;to her 
Kansas City Royals and Chiefs.&nbsp;In&nbsp;her&nbsp;later&nbsp;years, she&nbsp;became&nbsp;a 
news&nbsp;nerd&nbsp;spending hours keeping abreast of local, national, and 
international affairs. Survivors&nbsp;include&nbsp;a&nbsp;son, 
Ken&nbsp;(Teresa)&nbsp;Dietz&nbsp;of&nbsp;Bartlesville,&nbsp;OK;&nbsp;daughters&nbsp;Glenda&nbsp;Dietz&nbsp;of 
Overland Park, KS, and Sharon&nbsp;(John)&nbsp;Iverson&nbsp;of Saline, 
MI;&nbsp;grandchildren&nbsp;William&nbsp;(Melanie)&nbsp;Dietz, Amanda&nbsp;(Kyle)&nbsp;McDonald, and 
Kendra&nbsp;(Jared)&nbsp;Seat;&nbsp;and great-grandchildren Riley and Max McDonald, 
and&nbsp;Avery and Hayden Seat;&nbsp;sister Joan&nbsp;Croxell&nbsp;of Holstein, IA, and 
sister-in-law Catherine&nbsp;Kuhlken&nbsp;of Jackson, CA, along&nbsp;with 
many&nbsp;wonderful&nbsp;nieces and&nbsp;nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Norbert, parents, and brothers Kenneth Kuhlken and Henry Kuhlken. A
 funeral service will be held in WaKeeney, KS, on Saturday, March 5, at 
10:30 a.m. at Schmitt Funeral Home following a family visitation, burial
 will follow at the WaKeeney City Cemetery. &nbsp;

 was&nbsp;born&nbsp;August 30, 1921, in rural Ida County, Iowa, to Henry W. and 
Olga M.&nbsp;(Grefe)&nbsp;Kuhlken.&nbsp;Donna&nbsp;grew up on a&nbsp;farm&nbsp;and graduated 
from&nbsp;Cushing&nbsp;High School.&nbsp;Afterward, she&nbsp;attended&nbsp;Nettleton&nbsp;Business 
Training College in Sioux City, IA.&nbsp;After&nbsp;graduation, Donna&nbsp;worked&nbsp;in 
the accounting&nbsp;department&nbsp;of Mid-Continent Airlines in Sioux Falls, SD, 
and then Kansas City, MO.&nbsp;There&nbsp;she&nbsp;met&nbsp;Norbert&nbsp;W.&nbsp;Dietz and&nbsp;they 
were&nbsp;united&nbsp;in&nbsp;marriage&nbsp;on October 19, 1946, at&nbsp;St. John&nbsp;Lutheran Church
 in&nbsp;Cushing, IA.&nbsp;They&nbsp;were&nbsp;married&nbsp;for 55&nbsp;years&nbsp;until his&nbsp;death&nbsp;in 2002. For
 many&nbsp;years Donna&nbsp;was&nbsp;an active member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 
Kansas City, MO, where she faithfully served as&nbsp;church&nbsp;financial 
secretary.&nbsp;She&nbsp;also&nbsp;was&nbsp;an active member of 
the&nbsp;PTA.&nbsp;Donna&nbsp;enjoyed&nbsp;gardening, crocheting, listening to 
all&nbsp;kinds&nbsp;of&nbsp;music, feeding backyard birds, and was&nbsp;devoted&nbsp;to her 
Kansas City Royals and Chiefs.&nbsp;In&nbsp;her&nbsp;later&nbsp;years, she&nbsp;became&nbsp;a 
news&nbsp;nerd&nbsp;spending hours keeping abreast of local, national, and 
international affairs. Survivors&nbsp;include&nbsp;a&nbsp;son, 
Ken&nbsp;(Teresa)&nbsp;Dietz&nbsp;of&nbsp;Bartlesville,&nbsp;OK;&nbsp;daughters&nbsp;Glenda&nbsp;Dietz&nbsp;of 
Overland Park, KS, and Sharon&nbsp;(John)&nbsp;Iverson&nbsp;of Saline, 
MI;&nbsp;grandchildren&nbsp;William&nbsp;(Melanie)&nbsp;Dietz, Amanda&nbsp;(Kyle)&nbsp;McDonald, and 
Kendra&nbsp;(Jared)&nbsp;Seat;&nbsp;and great-grandchildren Riley and Max McDonald, 
and&nbsp;Avery and Hayden Seat;&nbsp;sister Joan&nbsp;Croxell&nbsp;of Holstein, IA, and 
sister-in-law Catherine&nbsp;Kuhlken&nbsp;of Jackson, CA, along&nbsp;with 
many&nbsp;wonderful&nbsp;nieces and&nbsp;nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Norbert, parents, and brothers Kenneth Kuhlken and Henry Kuhlken. A

Aquina&nbsp;(Leiker)&nbsp;Rajewski, age 94, of Vincent, Kansas, died Saturday, February 26,&nbsp;2022,&nbsp;at her home on the farm.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was born February 12, 1928, in Victoria, Kansas, to Pius and Anna (Sander) Leiker. &nbsp;She married Howard L. Rajewski on August 25, 1948,&nbsp;in Victoria.&nbsp;He preceded her in death on September 23, 2019.

After high school, she worked at the Victoria Co-op Grocery Store. After getting married, she and Howard operated the family farm. &nbsp;She was also a&nbsp;homemaker&nbsp;and&nbsp;seamstress.&nbsp;During the busy seasons, she&nbsp;helped her sisters&nbsp;as a seamstress&nbsp;at Feme`&nbsp;Dress &amp; Bridal&nbsp;Shop&nbsp;in Hays.

Aquina was a 1946 graduate of Victoria Rural High School, a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, and St. Boniface Christian Mothers of Vincent, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;She enjoyed sewing, cooking, canning, her flower gardens and her vegetable&nbsp;garden. &nbsp;Her pride and joy in life was her family and her faith.

Survivors include her children, Dr. Richard Rajewski and his wife, Vicki, Hays, KS; Neal Rajewski, of the home; Susan Kisner and husband, Deacon Dave, Hays, KS; Rosann Schippers and husband, Thomas, Wichita, KS; Joann Wheeler and husband, Rory, Wichita, KS; Dr. Roger Rajewski and wife, Dr. Lian Rajewski, Lawrence, KS; Leann Fortino and husband, John, Olathe, KS; her 15 grandchildren; her ten great grandchildren; her brothers-in-law, Dan Schmidtberger and wife, Donna, Hill City; George Gatschet,&nbsp;Hays, KS;&nbsp;Tom Wiesner, Punta Gorda, FL; her sisters-in-law, Ann Leiker, Hays, KS; Ada Leiker, Great Bend, KS; and Janice Leiker, Ellis, KS.

Freddy Lee Albert Valdez

Dr. John Charles Forrest, 85, of West Lafayette, Indiana, died February 23, 2022, at 3:55am, at St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Delphi, IN. He had been a resident there for the past 2 years. 

 He was born July 30, 1936, in Larned, Kansas and was the older of two sons to his parents, Orman and Erma Kline Forrest.  He spent his childhood in Larned, attending a one-room schoolhouse through 8th grade, helping out on the family farm, and participating in 4-H.  He married his first wife, Katherine Whiteside, mother of David and Tim, in 1964. He then married Beverley A. Richardson Landis in West Lafayette, on August 21, 2004, and she survives. 

He was a 1954 graduate of Larned High School, Larned, KS. He earned a BS in Animal Science in1960, and a MS in Meat Science in 1962, both from Kansas State University, and a PhD in Muscle Chemistry &amp; Physiology in 1966, at the University of Wisconsin.  He was a Professor of Animal Science at Purdue University from 1967 until his retirement in 2005, as Professor Emeritus.  He truly loved teaching and mentored thousands of undergrads and many graduate students during his tenure. 

He co-authored the textbook Principles of Meat Science and served on the Indiana meat producers through the agricultural extension program. He pioneered research in new methods to measure and ensure meat quality and safety. He published 85 research publications and was invited to 30 international speaking engagements, around the world. He traveled extensively as a consultant and lecturer. He led groups of Purdue students on international programs and hosted many foreign exchange students, forging lifelong friendships. 

He was awarded the following honors: 1983 Distinguished Extension-Industry Service Award from the American Meat Science Assoc., 1988 Meritorious Service Award-IN Pork Producers Assoc., and was an Honorary Member Award-CERES Purdue Ag. Honorary Society, 1992 USDA Distinguished Service Award for Scientific Research, 1994 Industry Innovator Award-Meat Marketing &amp; Technology magazine, and the Hovde Award of Excellence in Educational Service to rural people of IN, 1997 Meat Research Award-American Society of Animal Science, and the American Meat Science Association (AMSA) announces that Dr. John Forrest has been named the 2020 AMSA R.C. Pollock Award winner. The R.C. Pollock Award is presented annually in honor of the first general manager of the National Livestock and Meat Board. This award is sponsored by the AMSA Development Council R.C. Pollock, Robert Bray, and Vern Cahill Mentor Recognition Funds. 

He was a member of the American Meat Science Assoc., American Society of Animal Science, Council for Agriculture Science &amp; Technology, and the following Fraternal Memberships: Alpha Zeta, Gamma Sigma Delta, Phi Tau Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, &amp; Epsilon Sigma Phi. John was a founding member of the Wabash Township Volunteer Fire Department from 1975 to 1996, and active in the congregation of Covenant Church, serving as usher for many years. 

John is preceded in death by his parents. 

He will be dearly missed by his family. Surviving: wife Beverley A. Forrest of Zionsville; sons David (Rebecca) Forrest of Houston, TX and Tim (Jennifer) Forrest of Carmel. Grandsons: Gregory, Ryan, Joseph, Alex, and Jake Forrest; Brother Jim (Joan) Forrest of Larned, KS; niece Kimberly Forrest; nephew Kevin Forrest also survive. 

 A graveside service will be held at the Larned Cemetery, in Kansas on Thursday, March 3 at 2:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Covenant Church, 211 Knox Dr., West Lafayette, IN 47906 or Pawnee County 4-H Foundation, in care of Beckwith Mortuary, P.O. Box 477, Larned, KS 67550. 

A memorial service in West Lafayette will be scheduled at a future date to be announced.

Kim “Jay” Ayers, passed away February 25, 2022, at the age of 67 in his 
home in Palco, Kansas. He was born on September 5, 1954, in Colby, Kansas,&nbsp; to William Carson Ayers and his wife Thelma Katherine (Rose) Ayers.
 Jay started his life in Rexford, Kansas on a family farm with his 
two parents and his eight siblings. While Jay and his brothers went to 
school, they worked the farm with their father to help support the 
family. Later he attended Hill City High School and found his passion 
for playing basketball. In between schoolwork, chores, and basketball, 
Jay graduated high school in 1972.
 After a few run-ins with the law, Jay fell in love with the deputy’s
 daughter, Lana Lynne White. After a year of courting, he married Lana 
on August 4, 1979, on her birthday, in Hays, Kansas. It was then he 
gained two beautiful daughters, Kimberly and Jessica Pratt.
 Jay and Lana moved to Bird City, Kansas, where he fathered his first 
son, Zachery Jay Ayers in 1980. After trialing through some tough times,
 it was then Jay’s brother Larry, convinced him and his family to move 
to Roundup, Montana. This just so happened to be his dream location to 
raise his family.
 In 1982, Jay fathered his second son Dustin Jay Ayers, and the family
 eventually made their way to Musselshell, Montana. Jay served in the 
oil field in a supervisor position for 13 years while enjoying the 
luxuries of the Musselshell River fishing with his family.
 Jay and his family enjoyed many nights bowling, watching movies, 
hunting, fishing, and camping. Many fun memories were made, we are still
 NOT talking about that ONE movie!
 Eventually Jay and his family made their way home to Palco, Kansas 
where he had his brother Kenny close by to help him stay IN trouble. Jay
 worked for Murfin Drilling out of Logan, Kansas as a pumper for many 
years until he retired at the age of 61. Jay loved being able to work 
outdoors and was very good at what he did.
 Jay spent out the days of his retirement with his family and 
friends. He loved nothing more than taking drives in the country with 
his wife of 42 years, Lana, and watching the Kansas City Chiefs win a 
Super Bowl. Jay loved to hunt, fish, bird watch and if ever MIA, could 
look for a missing fishing pole and find him at the nearest body of 
water. Jay loved people and he never met a single stranger in his life, 
they were just friends he hadn’t met yet.
 Jay is survived by his mother, Thelma K. Jarrett; wife, Lana Ayers; 
two gifted daughters, Kimberly and Jessica Pratt; sons, Zachery Ayers 
and Dustin (Chantel) Ayers; seven grandchildren and six 
great-grandchildren.
 He is preceded in death by his father, William Ayers; brothers, 
Alvin, Larry, Gerald, and Kenny Ayers; sisters, Shirley Griggs, Lucille 
Ayers, Linda Ayers, Brenda Billinger; and grandchildren, Whitney Horton 
and Kayla Hartwell.
 Jay Ayers’ life was full of love, laughter and good times. He loved 
his life to the very fullest and enjoyed every second of it. He loved 
his family and friends dearly and wants everyone to go listen to Halls 
of Karma by Black Oak Arkansas in his memory.
 Services are pending at this time.

 Jay and Lana moved to Bird City, Kansas, where he fathered his first 
son, Zachery Jay Ayers in 1980. After trialing through some tough times,
 it was then Jay’s brother Larry, convinced him and his family to move 
to Roundup, Montana. This just so happened to be his dream location to 
raise his family.
 In 1982, Jay fathered his second son Dustin Jay Ayers, and the family
 eventually made their way to Musselshell, Montana. Jay served in the 
oil field in a supervisor position for 13 years while enjoying the 
luxuries of the Musselshell River fishing with his family.
 Jay and his family enjoyed many nights bowling, watching movies, 
hunting, fishing, and camping. Many fun memories were made, we are still
 NOT talking about that ONE movie!
 Eventually Jay and his family made their way home to Palco, Kansas 
where he had his brother Kenny close by to help him stay IN trouble. Jay
 worked for Murfin Drilling out of Logan, Kansas as a pumper for many 
years until he retired at the age of 61. Jay loved being able to work 
outdoors and was very good at what he did.
 Jay spent out the days of his retirement with his family and 
friends. He loved nothing more than taking drives in the country with 
his wife of 42 years, Lana, and watching the Kansas City Chiefs win a 
Super Bowl. Jay loved to hunt, fish, bird watch and if ever MIA, could 
look for a missing fishing pole and find him at the nearest body of 
water. Jay loved people and he never met a single stranger in his life, 
they were just friends he hadn’t met yet.
 Jay is survived by his mother, Thelma K. Jarrett; wife, Lana Ayers; 
two gifted daughters, Kimberly and Jessica Pratt; sons, Zachery Ayers 
and Dustin (Chantel) Ayers; seven grandchildren and six 
great-grandchildren.
 He is preceded in death by his father, William Ayers; brothers, 
Alvin, Larry, Gerald, and Kenny Ayers; sisters, Shirley Griggs, Lucille 
Ayers, Linda Ayers, Brenda Billinger; and grandchildren, Whitney Horton 
and Kayla Hartwell.
 Jay Ayers’ life was full of love, laughter and good times. He loved 
his life to the very fullest and enjoyed every second of it. He loved 
his family and friends dearly and wants everyone to go listen to Halls 
of Karma by Black Oak Arkansas in his memory.

Norton resident James “Jim” Underwood passed away February 23, 2022, at the Norton County Hospital in Norton at the age of 85.&nbsp;

brother Jerry of Overland Park, KS; his sister, Bonnie Lathrop of

Normand Lee Hrabe, Stockton, KS, passed away on February 26, 2022, at 
the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville, KS, at the age of 94. He 
was born on March 20, 1927, at home in Twin Mound Township, Rooks 
County, KS, to Frank G., Jr. and Laura (Kopsa) Hrabe. Normand married 
Zoe E. Schindler on August 8, 1954, in Stockton, KS. They were blessed 
with a son, Kenneth and a daughter, Tammy. 
 Normand grew up on a farm in the Twin Mound Township and attended 
the Hrabe Grade School and Codell High School. He started working for 
various farmers and ranchers at the age of 10. He broke horses for a 
living in his early years; and loved and cared for horses all his life. 
He worked in the oilfields and for Rooks County Highway Department and 
was a self-employed farmer until retiring at the age of 75. He was a 
Rooks County Commissioner for four years. Known as a jack of all trades,
 he loved working on stuff and especially helping his grandson Paul work
 on his race cars. 
 Normand is survived by his wife, Zoe Hrabe; son, Kenny and wife 
Betty of Stockton; daughter, Tammy Cork and husband Dennis of Dodge 
City, KS; four grandchildren, Paul Hrabe of Stockton, Shannon Poell and 
husband Cody of Lawrence, KS, Alicia Post and husband Derek of Agra, KS,
 and Gentry Cork of Colorado; four great-grandchildren, Aubrey Post, 
Chevelle Hrabe, Hudson and Hayden Poell; and step-great-grandchildren, 
Ethan and Kaelyn Means; and many other family and friends.
 He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank Jr. and Laura Hrabe; 
brother, Gene Hrabe; and sisters, Eulene Holubar and Dorrine Dix. 
 Normand was a kind, gentle man, and a loving husband, father, and 
grandfather. His grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life. He 
loved taking them fishing and playing “monster” with them. His 
great-grandchildren were the “hi-lite” of his life! Normand will be 
greatly missed by all who knew him, but the celebration of his life and 
memories will never be forgotten. For to each one of us who had the 
privilege of knowing and loving him, he leaves a legacy of true 
kindness, deep caring, and devoted love.

Jesse Don Smith, 46, of Russell, Kansas, died suddenly from diabetic 
complications on Friday, February 25, 2022, at the Hays Medical Center 
in Hays, Kansas.

A celebration of Jesse’s life will be held at 11 A.M. on Tuesday, 
March 01, 2022, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, 
Kansas.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Monday, February 
28, 2022, with family to greet guests from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. Monday 
evening at the mortuary.

Jesse was born on March 20, 1975, in Russell, Kansas, the son of Roy 
Smith and Meri Cathlene McLain.&nbsp; He grew up in Russell and graduated 
from Russell High School in the class of 1993.&nbsp; He was united in 
marriage to Tina Sarver on July 8, 2006 in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; From this 
union they were blessed with three children Ravyn, Ayden and D.J.Smith.&nbsp;
 Even though their marriage ended in divorce they worked hard together 
in raising their children.&nbsp; Jesse was also blessed with three 
grandchildren Thackery, Jayce, and Adelynn. Jesse was very interested in
 his Scottish and Indian heritage researching and displaying it in his 
home.

During high school he worked at the Dairy Queen until he graduated.&nbsp; 
For several years Jesse worked for Wheel Chairs of Kansas as a CNC 
programmer and operator, also operating their plasma laser equipment. 
His next job was working for Hutchinson Vending Company as a route 
driver in western Kansas.&nbsp; Recently he was working for the USD 407 
Russell High School as a custodian.&nbsp; He enjoyed playing video games with
 his children, listening to his favorite music, playing guitar and 
singing.&nbsp; Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and 
especially enjoying activities with his children.

Surviving family include his mother Cathy McClain of the home, his 
children Ravyn, Ayden and D.J. Smith all from Hays, Kansas; step 
brothers Gary McClain and wife Diana of Kansas City, Kansas and David 
McClain and wife Lorraine of Lawrence, Kansas and step sister Mary 
McClain of Hays, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his dad Roy Smith, step dad Dwane McClain
 and brothers Billy Smith, Keith Smith and sister Wendy Smith Cox also 
his grandparents and great-grandparents. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary

2022, at his home.&nbsp; Cliff was born on October 27, 1950, in Colby to Harold
 Jesse and Eva Mae (Putman) Beougher. When he was young the 
family moved to Grand Junction, Colorado.&nbsp; Cliff attended school at 
Clifton Elementary, Clifton, CO, and graduated from Palisade High School
 where he was very active in 4-H and FAA (Future Farmers of America). 
&nbsp;After graduation he returned to Kansas to farm and raise cattle in the 
Gove, Grinnell, and Campus area.&nbsp; He loved living in Kansas with his 
son, Jessie.&nbsp; Cliff never knew a stranger and was always willing to help
 anyone who needed it. Cliff is survived by his son, Jesse, of 
the home; four sisters:&nbsp; Sonya Bishop and Coleen Schreiner (Bill) and 
their families of Grand Junction, CO, Vicki (Merv) Anway of Clifton, CO,
 and Debbie Pense of Myrtle Point, OR, and Dennis Beougher.&nbsp; Also

John Damian Linenberger, 86, of Manhattan, passed away Tuesday, February 22nd. He was a house painter in the Manhattan area.
 John was born in Victoria, KS on October 29, 1935, the son of the 
late Bonaventure Linenberger and Gertrude (Beck) Linenberger. John was 
married to Marlene Ann Brungardt in Victoria on Dec 28, 1964, and she 
also survives of the home. John attended the St. Francis Catholic High 
School and Seminary in Victoria, he also served in the U.S. Army. John 
and Marlene attended the St. Isidore Catholic Church in Manhattan.
 Survivors are his wife, Marlene, of their home; his son, Shaun and 
Melissa Linenberger, of Manhattan, three grandchildren, Shane, Logan, 
and AJ. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Edwin, Gilbert, 
Dennis, Verlin, Thomas, Leo, and Patrick Linenberger; four sisters, 
Henrietta Giebler, Doris Younger-Pfeifer, Virginia Linenberger, and 
Bonita M. (Linenberger) Schulte; and one infant brother, Clarence 
Linenberger.
 Visitation will be prior to the vigil service and rosary from 6:30 pm to 7:00 pm; at the funeral home.

John Damian Linenberger

On Wednesday, February 23rd, 2022, Arthur Scott, loving husband and 
father of two, passed away at the age of 77. He is survived by his wife 
of 52 years, Cheryl, his sons Ty (Beth) and Blake (Cassandra), and 
grandchildren Melody and Miles.
 Art spent most of his life in Sheridan County and the surrounding 
areas. He was born in 1944 in Studley, Kansas to Mary and Leroy Scott, 
the sixth of sixteen children. Art started school in Studley, then 
attended Hill City Grade School, Lucerne Country School, and graduated 
from Sheridan Community High School (Hoxie) in 1962. He was drafted into
 the U.S. Army in 1965 and served a tour of duty in South Korea. In 
1969, he got a job as a lineman for Midwest Energy and married Cheryl 
Morgan in the First Presbyterian Church of Hoxie later that year. They 
decided to stay in Hoxie and raised their family there.
 Art was a dependable worker and had many interests. He spent his 
younger years custom cutting with his father and brothers. They followed
 the wheat harvest from Northern Oklahoma all the way to the Canadian 
border. He played high school basketball and ran the mile in track. He 
loved bass fishing, baseball and baseball cards, antiques, music, Hoxie 
High School sports, spending time in the sun, walking, weightlifting, 
and being with his family and friends. Babies and children loved him, 
and he was thrilled when he became a father, and later a Paw Paw. 
 Art was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Danny, 
Victor, Bob, Pete, and Steve Scott, and his sister Dixie Schmehr. He is 
survived by siblings Tyrone, Mary Ann, Bill, Diana, Carolynn, Mike, 
Joan, Carl, and John, and by many nieces and nephews.
 A memorial service will be held 10:30 A.M., Monday, February 28th, 
2022, at Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, 1024 Sheridan Ave. in Hoxie, with 
interment at the Hoxie Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, February 7, 
2022, Noon to 7:00 P.M. with family receiving from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M

 </figure>On Wednesday, February 23rd, 2022, Arthur Scott, loving husband and 
father of two, passed away at the age of 77. He is survived by his wife 
of 52 years, Cheryl, his sons Ty (Beth) and Blake (Cassandra), and 
grandchildren Melody and Miles.
 Art spent most of his life in Sheridan County and the surrounding 
areas. He was born in 1944 in Studley, Kansas to Mary and Leroy Scott, 
the sixth of sixteen children. Art started school in Studley, then 
attended Hill City Grade School, Lucerne Country School, and graduated 
from Sheridan Community High School (Hoxie) in 1962. He was drafted into
 the U.S. Army in 1965 and served a tour of duty in South Korea. In 
1969, he got a job as a lineman for Midwest Energy and married Cheryl 
Morgan in the First Presbyterian Church of Hoxie later that year. They 
decided to stay in Hoxie and raised their family there.
 Art was a dependable worker and had many interests. He spent his 
younger years custom cutting with his father and brothers. They followed
 the wheat harvest from Northern Oklahoma all the way to the Canadian 
border. He played high school basketball and ran the mile in track. He 
loved bass fishing, baseball and baseball cards, antiques, music, Hoxie 
High School sports, spending time in the sun, walking, weightlifting, 
and being with his family and friends. Babies and children loved him, 
and he was thrilled when he became a father, and later a Paw Paw. 
 Art was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Danny, 
Victor, Bob, Pete, and Steve Scott, and his sister Dixie Schmehr. He is 
survived by siblings Tyrone, Mary Ann, Bill, Diana, Carolynn, Mike, 
Joan, Carl, and John, and by many nieces and nephews.
 A memorial service will be held 10:30 A.M., Monday, February 28th, 
2022, at Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, 1024 Sheridan Ave. in Hoxie, with 
interment at the Hoxie Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, February 7, 
2022, Noon to 7:00 P.M. with family receiving from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M

Jesse Don Smith, 46, of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, February 25, 2022, at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

A celebration of Jesse’s life will be held at 11 A.M. on Tuesday, 
March 01, 2022, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, 
Kansas.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Monday, February 
28, 2022, with family greet guests from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. Monday evening

Judy left this earth into the loving arms of our Lord, on February 24, 2022. She passed of natural causes.
 Judy was born April 15, 1941, to Gordon Ladd and Donna Davidson in 
Van Wert, OH. The family moved to Canton, OH where she attended school 
until her junior year. The family moved to Phoenix, AZ, where she 
graduated from High School. Following graduation, she and several of 
her friends enlisted into the Air Force and received her honorable 
discharge three years later.
 Judy and Ardell met when a singles group went to a glider plane 
gathering in Colorado Springs Academy airfield. They started dating and
 were married in March 1981. They both worked in the Denver area. She 
worked at the YMCA as a secretary for many years, until she went to a 
Computer Consulting firm until retirement in March of 2006.
 They purchased a country home near the small town of Dresden, KS. 
They experienced a Tornado in May 2008 that ruined their home and shed. 
 They rebuilt and enjoyed the farm and ranch community.
 Judy loved the water, especially the ocean as the waves rolled in. 
So needless to say our vacations involved places like Hawaii, Camen 
Island, Cancun, ect. She also loved her flower gardens, digging in the 
dirt, and dedicated many loving hours on cross-stitch projects.
 Judy is survived by her loving husband Ardell, her daughter Kris 
(Mike), and stepchildren Tim (Theresa), Karen (Ken), Faith (Bill), 
Genene (Terry), and Brian (Tomi Jo); 12 grandchildren, 14 
great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents and 
granddaughter Holly. 
 Memorial service to be held at Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, March 2,
 2022, at 1:00 pm. . Inurnment will immediately follow the service in 
the Hoxie, City Cemetery. In leu of flowers, donations can be made to

 John P. McMillin, age 82, of Hays, Kansas, died Thursday, February 24, 
2022, at Cedar Village Care Center in Ness City, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born 
December 22, 1939, at Salina, Kansas, to Mark and Anna Phyllis (Bieker) 
McMillin. &nbsp;He married Dolores (Braun) on May 13, 1967, at Vincent, 
Kansas.

He worked at S &amp; W Supply in Hays as a parts man for 35 years and retired in 2002.

John
 grew up in Salina, Kansas, and was a 1959 graduate of Salina High 
School.&nbsp; He was a veteran of the U S Navy, and a member of Immaculate 
Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores McMillin, of the home; his 
daughters, Jill Haney and husband, Jeff, Aurora, CO; Holly 
McMillin-Hoopes and her fiancé, Chuck Link, Ransom, KS; his 
sisters-in-law, Wilma Braun, Hays, KS; and Linda Braun, Wichita, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Mark, Steven and
 Donald McMillin; and his sister, Mary Robinson.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 1, 2022, 
at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 18 &amp; Vine, Hays, Kansas
 with Father Elias Chinzara officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be in Saint 
Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp; Military Honors will be conducted 
at the graveside by the Hays and Victoria V.F.W.
