
Dorothy May Stewart, 99, died Wednesday, March 9, 2022, at High Plains
Retirement Village in Lakin, Kansas. She was born June 2, 1922, in
Pittsburg, Kansas the daughter of McKinley & Esther Marie (Philo)
DryBread.
Dorothy started school in Wayside, Kansas continuing at Rich Hill,
Missouri until the 8th grade. She then attended and graduated from high
school at Westport in Kansas City, Missouri. Dorothy then graduated
from Junior college in Independence, then earned a Bachelor’s degree in
Education from Fort Hay State University. Dorothy started her teaching
career in Montgomery County. She then taught in Haskell County,
Sublette, and Jetmore, Kansas. From 1950 to 1961, she taught music in
Kearny County, Kansas. Dorothy finished her career in 1962 after
teaching in Garden City. After her retirement, she continued to work as
a substitute teacher and she also worked for various sales agencies.
Dorothy was a member of the Lakin United Methodist Church and a
former member of the Westport Methodist Church. She also was a member
of the United Methodist Women and served on several committees. She
served as a Sunday School teacher and sang in the church choir. Other
memberships include the Read a Book Club, the Order of the Eastern Star,
and the Sandhill Arts Association. Dorothy enjoyed bowling, painting,
and aerobics.
On May 20, 1951, she married Howard Miller Stewart in Lakin,
Kansas. Howard died on September 1, 1990. Dorothy is also preceded in
death by her parents; her stepmother Dora Davis DryBread; a stepson
Robert Stewart; and two step-daughters Betty Hetzer and June Stewart.
Survivors include two granddaughters Diane Brown of Elkhart, Kansas
and Susan Kern of Canyon, Texas; three great-grandchildren Savanna
Davis, Valerie Johnson, & Stephanie Brown; and five great
great-grandchildren Everly Davis, Max Davis, Zade Johnson, Koya Johnson,
& Kira Johnson.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March
16, 2022, at the Lakin Cemetery in Lakin, Kansas with Rev. Ivan Milosi
officiating. There will be no calling hours. The family suggests
memorials given to the Lakin United Methodist Church or to High Plains
Retirement Village both in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Lakin,
Kansas.
