Douglas Brent Tongish

Justin Andrew Umphrey, 25, passed away on July 28, 2022, at the 
University of Kansas Health System – Great Bend. He was born on July 28,
 1997 at San Bernardino, Calif., to Jody Umphrey and Beckie Buck.

A resident of the Hoisington for the majority of his life residing in
 Junction City from 2017 to 2021, Justin was a mechanic at Heartland AG 
Systems. He proudly served his country in the Army National Guard, 
earning the rank of E-5 Sergeant, from 2016 to 2022. Justin enjoyed 
spending time with his family and making memories during high school 
football, wrestling, and baseball.

Survivors include his dad, Jody Umphrey (Jennifer Stout) of Great 
Bend; his mother, Beckie Buck of Wellington; one sister, Tiffany Umphrey
 of Great Bend; four brothers, Jerrad, Jacob, and Kaydin Umphrey, all of
 Great Bend, and Corie Umphrey of Junction City; two grandmothers, 
Stephanie Thomas of Burton, Mich. and Barbara Smith of Great Bend; and 
one niece, Hazelyn. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, 
Russell Thomas and Charles Buck.

Visitation will take place 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 2022, 
at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with family receiving friends and 
memory sharing from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 
2:00 p.m. Monday, August 1, 2022, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home with 
Victor Link presiding. There will be a private family burial at a later 
date. 

Memorials have been designated to the Sibling’s Education Fund, in

Janet Rankin, 95, passed away July 12, 2022, at The Village Of The 
Heights, Houston Texas. She was born December 24, 1926, on a farm in 
Albert, Kansas. She always said, “when my family came home from 
Christmas Eve service, I was dangling from the Christmas tree”. Janet 
was the daughter of Herman and Sena Behrens. She married Daylon Rankin 
on the very hot day of August 6, 1947.

She was a lifelong resident of Central Kansas, Janet was an active 
member of Peace Lutheran Church, serving many roles. She was also a 
supportive farming partner to Daylon.

Survivors include a son, Randy Rankin (Mary); a daughter, Pam Becker;
 three grandchildren, Laura Matyszewski (Sebastian), Colby Rankin 
(Paige), Ashton Becker (Sammy); and six much loved great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held on Friday, September 23, 2022, 10:30 
am, at Peace Lutheran Church, rural Albert, Kansas. Inurnment will 
follow at Peace Lutheran Church Cemetery. 

Memorials have been designated
 to the Peace Lutheran Scholarship fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Jeffery J. Abel, 60, passed away July 28, 2022, at Trinity Manor, Dodge City, KS.

He was born November 12, 1961, in Jetmore, the son of Burton Ray and 
June D. Fakes Abel.&nbsp; A lifetime area resident, he was owner and operator
 of Jeff’s Auto Repair in Jetmore.

He was of the Christian faith and was a member of the Jetmore Gun 
Club, volunteered on the Jetmore Fire Department for 30 years and loved 
drag racing and hunting.

Survivors include: two brothers, Lonnie (Marlene) Abel, Garfield, 
Larry (Marlene) Abel, Alex, OK; a sister, Bertha Ann Harris, Maysville, 
OK and nieces and nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jackie Johnson.

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, August 1, 2022, at 
Fairmount Cemetery, Jetmore, with Carolyn Tarman presiding.&nbsp; Visitation

Marlene Sylvia Brier, 77, of Colby, died Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at the 
Sheridan County Hospital, in Hoxie, KS. She was born November 5, 1944, 
in Selden, KS, to Melchior and Mary (Goscha) Weis. Throughout her life 
Marlene worked at Mr. C’s, Sonic, several area liquor stores and as a 
physical therapy C.N.A. at local nursing homes. Marlene loved being 
around people, especially her family. 
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Alfred and Cletus 
Weis; sisters, Loretta Walker and Donna Johnson and son Ronald Lynn 
Brier. 
She is survived by her children, Patty Ann (Bob) Mullins, of Hoxie, KS, 
and Michael Allen (Valerie) Brier, of Colby, KS; five grandchildren, 
Bradley Allyn Mullins, of Grinnell, KS, Renee LeAnn (Doug) Wagoner, of

Marlene Sylvia Brier (Weis)

Shirley Mae Vap, 69, of Colby, died Saturday, July 23, 2022, at Citizens
 Medical Center, Colby. She was born December 21, 1952, in Atwood, KS, 
to Orvis “O.L.” and Veda (Henningsen) Nelson. 

Shirley attended Valley 
View Country Grade School and Atwood High School, graduating with the 
class of 1970. She went on to attend Colby Community College then dental
 school, in Denver, CO. On March 18, 1974, Shirley married Dale Vap, in 
Wichita, KS and they had one daughter, Michele. Shirley worked as a 
teller at Bank West from 1979-1985 and provided home milk delivery 
services. In 1985, in addition to their farming, Dale and Shirley 
started Vap Distributing, a milk wholesale and delivery business. In her
 spare time, Shirley enjoyed hosting poker night and traveling with Dale
 in their motorhome, especially to NASCAR races and Chiefs games. 
She was preceded in death by her parents; infant brother David Nelson and brother-in-law Patrick Kania. 
She is survived by her husband Dale, of Colby; daughter Michele De Waal 
and husband Ian, of St. Francis, KS, and children Clay De Waal, Coy De 
Waal, Bree De Waal and Shelby (C.J.) Shaffer; brother D.J. Nelson, of 
Ludell; sisters, Jane (Skip) McCain, of Atwood, KS and Joann Kania, of 
Newbury, OH and nephews, Trent McCain, of Colby, Zack and Alex Kania,

Shirley Mae Vap

Earl Leslie “Rusty” Russell III of Gainesville, TX, passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2022.&nbsp; He was 78.

Born January 25, 1944, at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Rusty was a man of 
many talents, interests, and pursuits. Most importantly, he was a loving
 husband, father, brother and uncle, and a man of faith.

Rusty was, at his core, a deeply patriotic person, the quintessential
 US Army man.&nbsp; He began his military career in middle school in the 
Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) and continued to serve in 
ROTC throughout his high school and college years.&nbsp; In September 1966, 
upon graduation from Fort Hays State University, Kansas (BA in Political
 Science), Rusty received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the 
US Army. Soon afterwards, Rusty attended the Army Aviation Center and 
School at Fort Rucker, Alabama, where he earned his pilot wings.&nbsp; He 
served two tours in Viet Nam (1967-68 and again in 1971-72) where he 
flew reconnaissance missions and aligned artillery.&nbsp;

During these intense combat tours Rusty earned the following military honors:

Distinguished Flying Cross with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star, Army
 Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Meritorious Unit 
Citation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 7 
Bronze Service Stars, Cross of Gallantry W/Silver Star (2 Awards), 
Vietnam Campaign Medal with Palm. In 1975, having attained the rank of 
Major, Rusty was honorably discharged from the US Army.

It was in 1963—on a blind date—Rusty met the one and only true love 
of his life: &nbsp;Jan. He knew the moment he saw her descending the stairs 
at Miller Scholarship Hall that she was the woman for him, and he wanted
 to build a life with her.&nbsp; Rusty and Jan were married November 19, 
1966, and shared a love of travel, family, friends, and their only 
child, Lee.

Following his military career, Rusty and Jan opened a real estate 
firm, Hallmark Homes, in Manhattan, Kansas. In 1982, the opportunity 
arose to join Edward Jones as a Financial Advisor.&nbsp; Without a backup 
plan, Rusty and Jan decided to move their family to Gainesville, Texas, 
to start a new adventure.&nbsp; Throughout his quarter-century career with 
Edward Jones, Rusty was valued as a trusted advisor, educator, discreet 
confidante, and wise mentor.

Rusty was civic minded and generous with both his time and financial 
blessings. He served his community by participating on many boards 
including the Gainesville Municipal Airport Board, the North Texas 
Medical Center Board, the First United Methodist Church Board, the State
 Bar of Texas Ethics Committee Board, and on the Longhorn Council. Rusty
 was also an active member of the Gainesville Masonic Lodge #210 and 
served as a Past Master.

A lifelong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, Rusty earned the 
rank of Eagle Scout and later in life, the Order of the Arrow's Vigil 
Honor. Rusty served as leader of Gainesville's Troop 668 for many years,
 mentoring new generations of Scouts. He lived his life according to 
Scout Law, to be: &nbsp;Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, 
Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent.

Rusty was preceded in death by his parents, Colonel Earl L. Russell, 
Jr. USA (Ret.) and Laura Margaret E. Russell, and his brother-in-law, 
Brian Charles Klusener.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Kay “Jan” Russell of Gainesville; 
son, Earl Leslie “Lee” Russell, IV of Gainesville, Texas; brother and 
sister-in-law, Robert and Pam Russell of Manhattan, Kansas; sister and 
brother-in-law, Jane and Brad McMurray of Plant City, Florida; 
brother-in-law, John Klusener of Topeka, Kansas; sister-in-law, Laura 
Klusener of Pittsburg, Kansas; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and 
cousins.

Inurnment at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Veterans Cemetery will be held Friday, August 19, at 11:15 AM.

The memorial service with military honors is scheduled for Saturday, 
August 20, at 10:00 AM at First United Methodist Church of Gainesville.

Edward Jones, Rusty was valued as a trusted advisor, educator, discreet 
confidante, and wise mentor.Rusty was civic minded and generous with both his time and financial 
blessings. He served his community by participating on many boards 
including the Gainesville Municipal Airport Board, the North Texas 
Medical Center Board, the First United Methodist Church Board, the State
 Bar of Texas Ethics Committee Board, and on the Longhorn Council. Rusty
 was also an active member of the Gainesville Masonic Lodge #210 and 
served as a Past Master.A lifelong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, Rusty earned the 
rank of Eagle Scout and later in life, the Order of the Arrow's Vigil 
Honor. Rusty served as leader of Gainesville's Troop 668 for many years,
 mentoring new generations of Scouts. He lived his life according to 
Scout Law, to be: &nbsp;Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, 
Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent.Rusty was preceded in death by his parents, Colonel Earl L. Russell, 
Jr. USA (Ret.) and Laura Margaret E. Russell, and his brother-in-law, 
Brian Charles Klusener.Survivors include his wife, Janice Kay “Jan” Russell of Gainesville;

Rebecca Ann (Long) Erle, age 74, passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 
2022, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on 
August 26, 1947, in Fort Knox, Kentucky, the daughter of Faye Leroy and 
Mary Ann Huber Long. In May of 2022, she moved to Healy, Kansas, moving 
from Leoti, Kansas. She was a Homemaker.&nbsp;

Survivors include her Daughter - Amanda Faye and husband Kyle Roberts
 of Healy, Kansas, Five GrandDaughters - Nate Kristl of St. Louis,

Leland L. Kincaid, 86, died Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City.

He was born April 10, 1936, at Jennings, Kansas, the son of Melvin 
Russell and Wanita (Annon) Kincaid.&nbsp; He graduated from Jennings High 
School in 1954, Dodge City Community College in 1956, Fort Hays State in
 1962 and Northwestern State in Alva, Oklahoma in 1968 where he received
 his Master's in Education.&nbsp; He was in the education field for 41 years, 
the last 22 years as Principal of Sunnyside Elementary School in Dodge 
City, retiring in 1995.

He was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Dodge City.

On October 27, 1956, he married Lorraine Faye Stegman at Sacred Heart 
Cathedral in Dodge City.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on March 19, 2018.

Survivors include: 3 sons, Jeff Kincaid and wife Susan, Windsor, 
Colorado, Chad Kincaid and wife Mary, Dodge City and Brad Kincaid and 
wife Linda, Wichita; 10 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and a 
step-sister, Charlotte Cox, Doyline, Louisiana.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; 2 step-mothers, Jane 
Kincaid and Violet Kincaid; 2 step-sisters, Lucille Foster and Dona 
Mrstick, a grandson, Mike Kincaid and a great granddaughter, Aubrey 
McNeill.

Vigil service will be at 7:00 pm Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at the 
Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge City.&nbsp; Funeral Mass will be at

He&nbsp;was a wholesale coffee and janitorial supply salesman for many years. &nbsp;He also worked for American Electric and Stanion Wholesale Electric both of Hays. &nbsp;He grew up in Hays, was a 1964 graduate of Hays High School, and attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.&nbsp;

Survivors include his son, Leslie&nbsp;James&nbsp;Boucher, Hays, KS; his daughters, Laurie Hendrich and husband, Joey, Olathe, KS; Amy Kuhlman and husband, Duane, Petersburg, NE; his grandchildren, Brock Hendrich; Brody Hendrich; Kelsie Baumert and husband, Braydon; and his great grandchild, Charlotte Baumert.

Albert Joseph Boucher Jr.

John Neil (Stevens) Jednoralski died July 21, 2022, in Grand Island, NE. He was born to John Joseph and Mattie Stevens in Chicago, IL, on August 19, 1946.

Neil grew up in Chicago and went to Chicago Public Schools (Lovett 
Elementary School and Steinmetz High School.)&nbsp; Neil went to the 
University of Illinois, Urbana / Champaign, and graduated with a BS in 
Agricultural Science, a BS in Agricultural Engineering (soil and water 
conservation) and a Commission in the USAR, Corps of Engineers as 2LT 
(he was on Brigade Staff of IL AROTC as a junior, Brigade Command 
Sergeant Major). Neil served two years on active duty, with the Corps of
 Engineers, at Ft. Belvoir, VA, Ft Riley, KS, and Vinh Long, Mekong 
Delta, South Vietnam. While in Vietnam, he was the Battalion 
Construction Engineer, Battalion Reaction Force Commander, Battalion 
Civil Engineer and Battalion Assistant Operations Officer, for the 36th 
Engineer Battalion (Construction) in 1971. The Battalion was a 
Distinguished Unit that year.

Neil returned to the states to an engineering position with the State
 of Illinois, Division of Water Resources, as a hydraulic engineer. He 
continued his education at the University of Illinois, Springfield, 
Illinois, with graduate work in climatology / meteorology and 
environmental geology. Neil then started work in the private engineering
 consulting field and worked for three engineering consulting firms 
(Springfield, IL; Harrisburg, PA; South Bend, IN) as the engineer in 
charge of about 100 FEMA Flood Insurance Studies. He moved to Salina, 
KS, and worked over 10 years for Bucher, Willis &amp; Ratliff on flood 
insurance studies in KS, and hydrology / hydraulics in KS, NE and MO. 
Neil started working for MKEC, Wichita, KS, on flood insurance study 
revisions, the Wichita water system, and Wichita drainage.

Neil finished his engineering career, working over 7-yrs with Kirkham
 Micheal, Ellsworth, KS. He was the distribution engineer for Post Rock 
Rural (Ellsworth #1) Water District; was landfill engineer for Kiowa 
County during the Greensburg, KS, tornedo; prepared numerous drainage 
studies in KS and CO; was landfill engineer for numerous western KS 
landfills, and was design engineer on a Design/Build project, with Smoky
 Hill Construction, of 4 motor pool expansions and a child development 
center on Custer Hill, Ft Riley, KS.

Neil was a Life Member of the National Society of Professional 
Engineers, Kansas Society of Professional Engineers, American Society of
 Civil Engineers, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Salina 1432, American 
Legion, Salina 62, Disabled American Veterans, Salina 11; a 40-yr member
 of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, a 
former Chair of the Smoky Hill / Saline River Basin Advisory Committee 
and a member of the Salina City River Development Committee.

Neil was preceded in death by his wife of 21-yrs, Susan Ann (Clark 
Meyer Short) Jednoralski. They were married on March 22, 1986.

He is survived by his sisters; Jane and Joyce and 6 stepchildren; 
Jesse Meyer, Jeffrey Meyer, Judy Lenherr, John Meyer, JoLisa Fry and 
Jann Gunkle.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. 
Wednesday August 3, 2022, in the Osborne Cemetery, Osborne, KS. Neil 
will be buried behind, on the east, of his great grandfather, Samuel 
Robinson, a GAR Civil War veteran, and KS. Homesteader in Delhi 
Township, Osborne County, KS.

James Lee “Jimmy” Bosch, 65, of Hays, Kansas, died on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Jimmy was born on November 15, 1956, in Russell, Kansas, the son of 
John Edward, Sr. and Gwendolyn LaRue (Briley) Bosch.&nbsp; He grew up in 
Gorham, Kansas, and graduated from Gorham High School. &nbsp;He was born with
 a disability and attended a special school in Wichita for several 
years. He was raised on the family farm and helped out as much as he was
 able.&nbsp; His disability prevented him from having a conventional job but 
he always considered himself a farmer and enjoyed running the tractor. 
&nbsp;He lived in Wichita, Gorham and Hays, spending the last 12 years in 
Hays, Kansas at the Via Christie Village.&nbsp; He enjoyed spending time 
outdoors and tending to the family farm, as well as watching Kansas 
University Jayhawk basketball, Kansas City Chiefs football and Kansas 
City Royals baseball.&nbsp; Most of all he enjoyed getting together and 
spending quality time with his family and friends.

Surviving family include his brother John Bosch Jr. and wife Nancy; 
nephew and niece Nathan and Amy Bosch all of Austin, Texas and longtime 
caregiver Barbara Schmitt of Gorham, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister Debra Diane Bosch.

A memorial service to celebrate Jimmy’s life will be held at 10 A.M. 
on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at the Gorham Community Church in Gorham, 
Kansas.&nbsp; A private family graveside service will be held at the Prairie 
Lawn Cemetery in Gorham, Kansas.&nbsp; Family will greet guests the day of

James Lee 'Jimmy' Bosch

Rosalee Mary Steimel, 61, of Salina, Kansas, died 
July 25, 2022.&nbsp; Rose was born on May 26, 1961, in Ellinwood, Kansas.&nbsp; 
She was the youngest child of Herman and Waneta Steimel, granddaughter 
of Martin and Adela Vogel and Adolph and Anna Steimel.

As the youngest of six children, Rose was close to her siblings, 
nieces, and nephews her entire life.&nbsp; She graduated from Claflin High 
School in 1979 and Barton County Community College with a full tennis 
scholarship.&nbsp; She earned a B.S. in Business and Data Processing Magna 
Cum Laude in 1982 as well as a M.B.A. in 1983 from Fort Hays State 
University.&nbsp; In 1991, Rose completed her Ph.D.&nbsp; from Kansas State 
University in Curriculum and Instruction within Computer Science.

Rose was a college professor in computer studies and taught at Fort 
Hays State University, Marymount College, Benedictine College in Salina,
 and Kansas Wesleyan University.&nbsp; Throughout the years, she was promoted
 to Professor of Computer Studies and Assistant M.B.A. Director.&nbsp; Rose 
served as Chairperson of the Department of Computer Science, Chairperson
 of the Division of Natural Sciences, and served on many faculty and 
university committees. Rose retired from KWU in 2020 and was named 
Professor Emeritus in Computer Studies.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Surviving family include her sister, Carol Ahlvers, with her 
children, Leslie (Andrew) Amick, and Nolan (Lindsay) Ahlvers. She is 
survived by her brother, Lyle (Barbara) Steimel, and their children, 
Jessica Steimel, Adam (Kat) Steimel, Kimberly Steimel, and Dan (Liz) 
Steimel. She is survived by her sister, Sharon Steimel and husband Steve
 Thomas with their children, Kelly (Dave) Lohrmeyer, Eric (Erica) 
Thomas, and Drew Thomas and wife, Mallory Krahn. Her deceased brothers’ 
children are Della Strait, Pam (Scott) Wiederholt, Deb Steimel (Joe) 
Clair, Charles (Sarah) Steimel; and Carrie Steimel.&nbsp; She is survived by 
sister-in-law, Lorene Steimel.&nbsp;&nbsp; Also, Rose had 29 great nieces and 
nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Robert Steimel, 
sister-in-law Maridell, brother Glenn Steimel, and brother-in-law David 
Ahlvers. &nbsp;

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 
30, 2022, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 1000 Burr Oak Lane,
 Salina, KS.&nbsp; A vigil will be held at 9:30 a.m. for a rosary and

Marsha L. Morrill, 75, passed away July 22, 2022, at her home in Seymour, Wisconsin.

She was born March 1, 1947, in Great Bend, Kansas, the daughter of Ernest and Jane S. Heaton Morrill.

Marsha enjoyed a career in nursing caring for others and was a lover of animals.

Robert Joseph “Bob” Ross, 69, of Oberlin, KS passed away at Great Plains Hospital in North Platte, NE on July 24, 2022.
 Bob was born May 12, 1953, in Cheyenne Wells, CO, the son of late 
Robert and Wanda Ross. Bob was united in marriage to his sweetheart, 
Karla Elizabeth Eiring, on April 5, 1975, in Cheyenne Wells, CO, where 
they were both born and raised. 
 Bob and Karla moved to Oberlin, KS three years later to work for 
Halliburton Oil Company. Bob spent most of his life working in the oil 
field and running his own business — Rossco Packers. He will be mostly 
missed for his orneriness but kindhearted spirit. 
 Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Wanda Ross; 
brother Bill Ross and grandparents. He is survived by his wife, Karla 
Ross of Oberlin, KS and daughter, Lindsey Ross and Jeremy Williams of

Leo Harold Baum, 98, passed away July 25, 2022, at Country Place 
Senior Living Memory Care, Hoisington.&nbsp; He was born August 28, 1923, at 
Susank, Kan., to Andrew and Katherine (Schmidt) Baum.&nbsp; Leo married 
Loretta Jean Cronn Dec. 12, 1949, in Russell, Kan.&nbsp; They celebrated 72 
years of marriage last December.

Leo, a resident of Hoisington since 1970 coming from Paradise, Kan., 
was a veteran of WW II serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. 
Philadelphia.&nbsp; Following his honorable discharge on March 29, 1947, he 
worked in the oilfield, the Helium Plant in Otis and later as a tool 
pusher for Mohawk Drilling.&nbsp; In his later years he was employed at Great
 Bend feeding as a night watchman.&nbsp; Leo enjoyed fishing, music, playing 
his guitar and spending time with family.&nbsp; He was a Life member of the 
V.F.W., Russell, and was a devoted member of the Christian faith, 
accepting Christ at the age of 18.&nbsp; Leo shaped his life around his faith
 in Jesus Christ as his Savior, and made it his life's work to embrace 
and spread the Word.

Survivors include his wife Loretta of the home; two sons, Leo Baum, 
Jr. (Vicky) of Rusk, Texas, and Gordon Baum (Karen) of Buchannon, W.V.; 
two daughters, Ginger Cotten (Joe) of Hoisington, and Brenda Roat (Damon
 Phelps) of Hoisington; son-in-law Terry Hekele of Great Bend; 
grandchildren, LC Baum, Bri Foresman, Kim Gould, Angela Gould, Tina 
Harman, Cassie Andrews, Kristin Wilt, Terri Umphres, Tiffany Hekele,

Leo Harold Baum

Irene Catherine Mattas passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2022, at the 
Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson, Kansas at the age of 93. She was born
 on March 17, 1929, in Odin, Kansas, to Joseph and Mary (Lamatsch) Demel, 
she was the last surviving of 13 siblings. Irene was united in marriage 
to Leonard Mattas on April 10, 1956, in Odin, Kansas, at the Holy Family 
Church and the couple was blessed with four children: Mike, Mary, Norma,
 and Nancy.
 Irene grew up in Odin and attended school through the 8th grade. She
 was married in 1956 to Leonard Mattas and the couple farmed and 
ranched. She raised children and helped Leonard in any way she could. 
Irene was a phenomenal cook, baker, and handy with growing and raising 
the family’s food. In her free time she enjoyed crotcheting projects and
 being a pillar to her church community. Irene was a member of the St. 
Wenceslaus Council of Catholic Women, Altar Society, and D of I St. 
Francis Circle 232.
 Irene had a deep love and devotion for her husband, children, family
 and friends. Her great love and faith in God were not only a constant 
source of strength for herself, but also for all who knew her. She will 
be remembered for her devotion to the Lord and her family.
 She is survived by her children, Mike (Mary) Mattas of Wilson, KS, 
Norma (David) Schneweis of Claflin, KS; grandchildren, Jacquelyn (Paul) 
Simon, Amanda (Kelby) Ternes, Andrea (Connor) Flegler; and 
great-grandchildren, Ty Ternes, Tatum Ternes, Tristan Ternes, Rorric 
Simon, Brenton Simon, and Rowan Flegler.
 Irene joins in her heavenly home her parents, Joseph and Mary Demel;
 children, Mary Mattas, Nancy Mattas; brothers, Edward Demel, Clarence

Irene was a phenomenal cook, baker, and handy with growing and raising 
the family’s food. In her free time she enjoyed crotcheting projects and
 being a pillar to her church community. Irene was a member of the St. 
Wenceslaus Council of Catholic Women, Altar Society, and D of I St. 
Francis Circle 232.
 Irene had a deep love and devotion for her husband, children, family
 and friends. Her great love and faith in God were not only a constant 
source of strength for herself, but also for all who knew her. She will 
be remembered for her devotion to the Lord and her family.
 She is survived by her children, Mike (Mary) Mattas of Wilson, KS, 
Norma (David) Schneweis of Claflin, KS; grandchildren, Jacquelyn (Paul) 
Simon, Amanda (Kelby) Ternes, Andrea (Connor) Flegler; and 
great-grandchildren, Ty Ternes, Tatum Ternes, Tristan Ternes, Rorric 
Simon, Brenton Simon, and Rowan Flegler.
 Irene joins in her heavenly home her parents, Joseph and Mary Demel;
 children, Mary Mattas, Nancy Mattas; brothers, Edward Demel, Clarence 
Demel, Gus Demel, Jerome Demel, Steve Demel; sisters, Theresa Demel, 
Marie Gerritzen, Anne Wondra, Margaret Neuschafer, Matilda Schneider, 
Viola Axman and Eleanor Fiedler.
 A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 29, 2022, at 
10:30 AM at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilson. Visitation

Judy Ann Weigel, age 80, died July 26, 2022, at The Arbors at Waldron 
Place Memory Care Assisted Living in Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; She was born 
February 17, 1942, in Munjor, KS, to Felix and Elizabeth (Herrman) 
Schumacher.&nbsp; Everyone who knew Judy, knows she was a “social butterfly” 
and her greatest talent was her “gift of gab."&nbsp; This earned her the 
nickname of the Munjor Lilly early in life.

Judy had a passion for music she inherited from her father at an 
early age.&nbsp; During High School, she would often travel with her father on
 the weekends playing her saxophone while he played the accordion in the
 Hermanettes polka band for anniversaries and weddings all over Kansas.&nbsp;

Judy graduated from Hays High School in 1960, where she was crowned 
homecoming queen.&nbsp; While still in high school, she worked at her uncle’s
 beauty salon after school, helping wash client’s hair.&nbsp; It was there 
Judy became interested in being a Cosmetologist.&nbsp; After high school she 
attended Sidney’s Hairdressing Academy in Hutchinson, KS while living 
with her sister Alma and her family.&nbsp; Judy absolutely loved all 
children.&nbsp; Her nephews often share stories about waiting at the front 
door for Judy to get out of school so she could rescue them from the 
house for a bit as she walked them to Peter Pan for ice cream cones.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While working for another uncle at his local ice cream parlor in 
Hays, KS, Judy met the love of her life Darrell, as he chased her around
 the ice cream cabinet one day when he delivered milk and ice cream from
 the LK Dairy.&nbsp; They married April 29, 1961, and shared almost 40 years 
of marriage prior to his death April 17, 2001.&nbsp; As Darrell climbed the 
corporate ladder with Dillon’s Food Stores, they moved across Kansas and 
Arkansas, sometimes transferring within weeks or months after the last 
move.&nbsp; Judy’s social nature was a godsend during these times as she 
worked to help Darrell and their three girls adjust to the constant 
moves. She quickly found work either at local salons or opening her own 
salon in their home.&nbsp; Once Darrell got assigned to the Dillon Offices as
 a Meat Market supervisor, Judy retired for a few years before 
purchasing Faircrest Beauty Salon in 1980 the year their oldest daughter
 graduated from High School.&nbsp; She continued to manage and work as a 
stylist at the salon until 1994 after her and Darrell paid the last 
college bill for their girls.&nbsp; Judy often said, besides raising her 
three daughters her greatest accomplishment and gift to the girls was 
their college education.

Judy had numerous hobbies and interests.&nbsp; Her greatest joy was 
traveling all over Kansas to attend as many of her grandchildren’s 
sporting events as she possibly could.&nbsp; She also enjoyed playing golf, 
bridge, and going to the casinos.&nbsp; Judy was known as a “wicked” card 
player.&nbsp; She enjoyed following politics and everything going on in her 
country.&nbsp; After her husband, Darrell died, Judy volunteered selling 
tickets at all the Trinity High School Basketball games, where she was 
known as “Grandma Judy” by all the Junior and High School students and 
staff.&nbsp; She was a member of Church of the Holy Cross (where she served 
as a Eucharistic Minister and Rosary Leader) and St. Teresa Catholic 
Church.&nbsp; She absolutely cherished all of her thirteen grandchildren, 
twelve great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.&nbsp; She often 
thanked her girls for bringing such amazing son-in-laws into the family.

Judy is survived by:&nbsp; children, Sandra Pangburn (Steven) of 
Hutchinson; Stacey Cahn (Robert) of Derby; Suzanne Schowalter (Travis) 
of Overland Park; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and 1 
great-great-grandchild.

She was proceeded in death by: her husband, Darrell; her parents; 
infant brother, Harry Schumacher; sister, Alma Aich; brother, LeRoy 
Schumacher; and a nephew, Ricky Schumacher.

Parish Rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2022, with
 Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:00 a.m., both at Church of the
 Holy Cross, Hutchinson, with Father Aaron Spexarth officiating. The

Judy Ann Weigel

John Emmett Stansfield, 81, passed away on July 25, 2022, at home in 
Great Bend, Kan. He was born on November 1, 1940, to Jack and Elsie 
(McKnight) Stansfield. John was married to Barbara Hall on December 12, 
1981, in Freehold, N.J. She survives.

Recently moving to Great Bend from Brown Mills, N.J., he spent most 
of his work life as a factory worker and self-employed house painter. He
 was a member of the Elks and VFW Auxillary. John served his country 
with time spent in the Navy.

Survivors include two sons, Kevin (Debbie) Stansfield of Great Bend, 
and John (Linda) Stansfield of Wichita; a daughter, Lynn (Dave) Geis of 
Clifton, Colo.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was 
preceded in death by a brother, Jim Stansfield.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Funeral 
service will take place Saturday, July 30, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at St. 
Patrick Catholic Church with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding.

Anita M. (Bedore) Thyfault, age 89, of Hays, Kansas died Monday, July 25, 2022, at Via Christi Village Care Center, Hays, Kansas.

She was born August 4, 1932, in Zurich, Kansas, to Henry and Victoria (Martel) Bedore. &nbsp;She married Kenneth D. Thyfault on July 17, 1950,&nbsp;at&nbsp;Zurich,&nbsp;Kansas. &nbsp;He preceded her in death on April&nbsp;16, 2003.

She was homemaker, a farmer’s wife, and worked at Travenol for a few years. &nbsp;She grew up and attended school in Zurich, and moved to Hays in 1970. &nbsp;Anita was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church. &nbsp;She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, her bowling&nbsp;league, and on the farm her large garden. &nbsp;She was a loving mother, enjoyed her family, and grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Terry Thyfault, Topeka, KS; Vickie Thyfault, Hays, KS; Cindy Hart and husband, Alan, Loveland, CO; Sandy Thyfault,&nbsp;Phoenix, AZ; Pam Groff, Hays, KS; Jim Thyfault and wife, Brenda, Fredrick, CO; 14 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. &nbsp;

Anita was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Omer; and her sisters, Alma, Lean, Agnes, Georgie, Janette and Rose.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Friday, July 29, 2022, at Saint Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, 2901 East 13th&nbsp;Street, Hays, Kansas with Father Damian Richards officiating. &nbsp;Burial will be in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Hays, Kansas.

Ellen DeAnne Bulinski, 69, died on Sunday, July 24, 2022, at Lane County 
Hospital in Dighton. She was born on January 16, 1953, at Scott City, the
 daughter of Earl Deverne &amp; Elizabeth Anne (DeLong) McKenna. She 
married William T. Bulinski on June 15, 1985, at Sharon Springs. 
DeAnne attended Dighton schools and graduated from Sharon Springs High 
School. She attended Colby Community College. In 1982, she moved back 
to Dighton and worked at several places including cleaning houses, doing
 propane sales for Midwest Energy, a custodian at Lane County Court 
House, a census taker and retired as Assistant Register of Deeds. She 
was a member of the United Methodist Church of Dighton. She enjoyed her
 gnomes and mushroom collections, cooking, growing plants, her water 
garden, traveling and most of all her family activities. 
She is survived by her Husband- Bill Bulinski, 4 Children- Stanley 
Bulinski of Dighton, Sean Bulinski of Emporia, Amy Piedra of Dighton and
 Jaime Ortiz of Ashland, 2 Brothers- William Colin McKenna of Holiday, 
Tennessee and Kevin Paul McKenna of Watonga, Oklahoma, 2 Sisters- 
Melanie Sue Baalman of Dighton and Maureen Elene Knox of Hugoton, 17 
Grandchildren and 1 Great-Grandson. She is preceded in death by her 
Parents and Daughter- Suzanne Anderson.

William "Bill" White Jr., 83, passed away on July 24, 2022 at his home
 in Ness City, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on January 9, 1939 in Scott County, 
Kansas, the son of William and Josephine (Jones) White.

Bill was a truck driver for many years. His life was centered around 
family and his hobbies. His hobbies were reading, fishing, limestone 
crafts, gardening, and creating yard décor and other knickknacks. He 
married Barbara Tittle on July 10, 1975, in Bazine, Kansas.&nbsp;

Survivors include wife, Barbara White; children Curtis White (Kristi)
 of Red Oak, IA, Terry White (Linda) of Dodge City, KS, Carolyn Custer 
(John) of Helenville, WI, Jeffrey White (Lacy) of Kansas City, KS, 
Stephanie Pfannenstiel (Aaron) of Lawrence, KS; 13 grandchildren; and 18
 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson,
 Timothy White; and siblings, George, James, John, Midge, Martha, Mary 
Jo, and Jessie Lee.

Funeral service will be on Friday, July 29, 2022, 10:30 a.m., at 
Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City, Kansas.&nbsp; Burial in the Ness City

 of Red Oak, IA, Terry White (Linda) of Dodge City, KS, Carolyn Custer 
(John) of Helenville, WI, Jeffrey White (Lacy) of Kansas City, KS, 
Stephanie Pfannenstiel (Aaron) of Lawrence, KS; 13 grandchildren; and 18
 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson,
 Timothy White; and siblings, George, James, John, Midge, Martha, Mary 
Jo, and Jessie Lee.Funeral service will be on Friday, July 29, 2022, 10:30 a.m., at 
Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City, Kansas.&nbsp; Burial in the Ness City 
Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Ness City Public Library or the Ness County Historical Society.
