Evelyn Grace Mankhey

Evelyn G. Mankhey was born January 4, 1938, the youngest child of Henry and Daisy Post Tuxhorn in Smith Center, KS. Evelyn passed away Saturday, September 24, 2022, in Smith Center, KS. She attended rural schools in Smith County until her family moved to Smith Center where she finished through high school.

During her high school days, she developed a love of roller skating. She attended a professional skating school in Greeley, Colorado and she worked at the skating rink in Smith Center for Mr. & Mrs. Kenny Castle.

After graduating from high school, she became a legal secretary for Relihan Law Office in Smith Center. It was during this time that she met and married Jerome Mankhey. They were blessed with 3 children, Rod, Pam and Kim. She and the children traveled with Jerome to many states where he was stationed in the military.

In 1970 they bought a home and moved to Smith Center where they lived until Jerome’s death in 2000. During this time she worked at Casey’s and then at the Style Shop until it closed. At that time Evelyn retired from public work. Evelyn was a Sunday School teacher for many years and loved the little children.

Evelyn renewed friendship with a high school sweetheart, Art Woodcock and they have enjoyed the rest of their lives together playing golf and doing yard work.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jerome; brothers Delmer Lee, Leo and Waldean “Pooch” Tuxhorn; sisters Roma Fristoe and Rachel Favinger; sisters in law Lila & Leveda Tuxhorn; brother in law Leonard Favinger.

Surviving are her companion, Art Woodcock of Smith Center, son Rod of Smith Center, daughters Pam Harrison of Grand Island, Ne and Kim Smith (Stan) of Smith Center; grandchildren Krista (Jeff) Finley, Lindsay (Chad) Wiseman, Blake Smith and Scott Harrison; great grandchildren, Jackson & Marcus Finley, Mya, Kya, Brooklyn and Cali Wiseman and Blake Smith, Jr; brother Doyle Tuxhorn; sister in law Charlene Tuxhorn; Art’s children Lyle, Jeff and Rick Woodcock and families.
