Russell Eugene Morgan passed away on September 18, 2022, in the 
comfort of his home surrounded by his family at the age of 66. He was 
born on July 21, 1956, to Lyle and Lyril (Power) Morgan in Phillipsburg,
 Kansas. 

Russell was united in marriage to Patricia “Tricia” Robinson on
 May 30, 1975, at the Main Street Christian Church in Stockton, Kansas. 
The couple was blessed with four sons: Brandon, Brady, Levi, and Jacob.

Russell
 grew up in Glade and attended Glade Grade School and Junior High before
 going to Stockton High School. He then went to work several other jobs 
as a general laborer and worked with his family custom harvesting. Later
 in life he was a mechanic as well as working for the county as an 
equipment operator. Russell was no stranger to hard work, his family and
 friends labeled him as a “workaholic”, but that didn’t keep him from 
taking the time to stop and visit with friends and family when the 
opportunity presented itself.

We find solace that 
Russell grew in his faith and accepted the Lord’s gift to us. Someday we
 will see our husband, brother, and friend in Christ again.

Russell
 is survived by his wife, Tricia Morgan of Stockton, KS; sons, Brady 
Morgan of Great Bend, KS, Levi Morgan of Plainville, KS, and Jacob 
(Lexy) Morgan of Milwaukee, WI; siblings, Randy Morgan of Dickinson, ND,
 Kyla (John) Hoffman of Dalhart, TX, Colleen Morgan of Stockton, KS, 
Kevin (Ronda) Morgan of Stockton, KS; and grandsons, Brandon Russell 
Morgan, and Henry Morgan.

He joins in his heavenly home, his parents, Lyle and Lyril Morgan and a son, Brandon Morgan.

The
 family will be hosting a Memorial Service on Thursday, September 22, 
2022, at the Main Street Christian Church in Stockton starting at 10 AM.

Lyle Prockish, age 83, of Summerfield, Florida, passed away September 13, 2022, peacefully at his home. 

He was born on September 26, 1939, in Hays, Kansas. 

Lyle graduated from San Francisco College of Mortuary Science in 1962 and was a Funeral Director &amp; Embalmer for over 40 years. He enjoyed traveling around the world with his wife and spending time with his sons and grandchildren. 

Lyle is survived by his wife of 58 years Karen; children John of Oregon, Craig of Idaho, and Thomas of Oregon; grandchildren Jennifer, Joshua, Cameron, Victoria, Samual and Madeline; grandchildren, Emma, Jolee and Grace.

Carl Zink, 87, passed from his earthly life on August 1, 2022. He was
 born September 26, 1934, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of the late 
Orval and Mary (Bontrager) Zink.

Carl graduated from Kansas State University with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. He served in the United States Army.

On
 December 31, 1991, he married Mary Ellen (Herndon) Walk and celebrated 
30 years of marriage this past year. They made their home in Garden 
City, Kansas until moving to Mustang, Oklahoma to be near grandchildren.

Carl
 is survived by his wife Mary, children Shelly Pitts (Lynn), Greg Zink 
(Donna), Carol Zink (Kathy Garcia), Dana Barnes (Rocky), and Dax Walk 
(Audra), brother O.J. Zink (Linda), seven grandchildren, and six 
great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by is parents, his sister Natalie (Zink) Zook, and brother Robert Zink.

A
 graveside service will be held on Monday, September 26, 2022, at 10:30 
a.m. at the Leoti Cemetery with Pastor Don Williams presiding.

Wanda May Schuhs, 95, passed away on 
September 18, 2022, at the Wichita County Health Center in Leoti, 
Kansas. She was born on November 7, 1926, in Lenora, Kansas to Sidney R.
 and Etta Catherine Fitzjarrell Williams. After her parents death, she 
was adopted by Lawrence L. and Mabel Smith of Dresden, Kansas. She had 
been a teacher with a degree in Special Education as well as a nurse’s 
aide for many years.

Wanda was a resident of Leoti, Kanas since 1968 having moved from Glen Elder, Kansas with her Husband.&nbsp;

On May 24, 1947, Wanda married&nbsp; Forrest Woodrow Schuss at the 
Methodist Church in Dresden, Kansas. He passed away on May 2, 2012, in 
Leoti, Kansas.

Wanda is survived by her sons, Mark Schuhs of Bellevue, Nebraska, 
David &amp; Jerry Schuhs of Olpe, Kansas, Phillip Schuhs of Leoti, 
Kansas, Jonathan Schuhs of Leoti, Kansas, James &amp; Song Schuhs of 
Litchfield Park, Arizona, five grandchildren Devin Schuhs of Phoenix, 
Arizona, Stephanie Girdner of Papillion, Nebraska, Timothy Schuhs of 
Wichita, Kansas, Jaqui Gracey of Fr. Rucker, Alabama, James Stackhouse 
of Phoenix, Arizona, three great grandchildren, and one niece Davene 
Abeling of La Palma, California.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband, one son Stephen Schuhs, and one grandson Kelly Schuhs.

Wanda May Schuhs

Leona Marie Brazda Duft, 89, passed away September 18, 2022, at the 
University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus. She was born on 
August 12, 1933, in Spearville, to John and Clara (Hines) Slattery. She 
married Bernard Brazda Feb. 17, 1958, in Spearville. He passed away June
 25, 1989. She then married Duane Duft Oct. 5, 1991, in Hoisington. He 
passed away October 1, 2005.

Leona had been a Great Bend resident since 2005, coming from Dodge 
City, Denver, Colo., Hoisington and Ellinwood. She worked in the brush 
and distribution departments at Fuller Brush, retiring after many years 
of faithful employment. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at 
St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Altar Society. Leona enjoyed 
fellowship at the Great Bend Senior Center and playing cards, bunco and 
dominos. She was an avid Denver Broncos fan and was well known for her 
cinnamon rolls. Leona loved to cross stitch blankets and tea towels for 
her family, including the grandkids and great grandkids, as well as 
friends.

Survivors include, two sons, Bret Brazda and wife Janet of 
Bartlesville, Okla. and Bradly Brazda and wife Fern of Huntsville, Ala.;
 two daughters, Cindy Suchy and husband Charlie of Great Bend and Devon 
Dionisi of Wichita; a daughter in law, Paula Brazda of Topeka; eleven 
grandchildren, Ben Brazda, Katie Schooler (Skylar), Mickie Brazda, 
Travis Suchy (Jill), Trenton Suchy, Jacob Brazda (Jamie), Jordan Skaggs 
(Will), Jayden Brazda (Lauren), Leah Diebolt (Brock), Meg Dionisi and 
Abigail Brazda; and eleven great grandchildren. She was preceded in 
death by her husbands, Bernard Brazda and Duane Duft; a son, Bryan Lee 
Brazda; son in law, Michael Dionisi; and siblings, Vincent Slattery, 
John Slattery, Alvin Slattery and Dorothy Schaller.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 pm, Wednesday, 
September 21, 2022, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Altar Society rosary at
 4:00 p.m. and Vigil service and rosary at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian 
Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 22, 2022, at St.

Leona Marie Brazda Duft

Connie Jean (Cooper) Argabright passed away September 3, 2022, in Derby,
 KS, at the age of 87. She was born July 17, 1935, in Rawlins Co 
Hospital, to Reno and Minnie (White) Cooper. She grew up on a farm south
 of Atwood and attended a country school until the 8th grade. She then 
continued school in the Atwood School district prior to attending 
Marymount College, Salina KS in pursuit of a nursing degree. 
Connie was engaged to Dal Argabright during her nursing degree studies. 
On June 5, 1957 Connie and Dal were united in marriage at the First 
Christian Church in Atwood, KS. Connie and Dal lived on a farm 1 mile 
west of Blakeman until they moved to a farm 3 miles southwest of Atwood 
on the south fork of Beaver Creek. To this union was born four children:
 Jody Rae, David Earl, Judy Lynne, and Michael Dal. Connie enjoyed 
living and working on the farm. She always enjoyed being outdoors 
planting trees and flowers and raising a garden. With a love for 
animals, she raised sheep, chickens, Schnauzers and Schipperkes dogs. 
Her passion was her husband and children. Connie cared for Dal for the 
rest of his life following an airplane accident in June of 1979. Dal 
would say to his children, referring to Connie, “She is an angel on 
earth.” Connie worked at the Rawlins County Hospital and was then 
employed as a school nurse with the Atwood School district before 
retiring. During her career as a school nurse Connie continued her 
education, receiving her bachelor’s degree in nursing. She also enjoyed 
teaching birthing classes to expectant parents in the local community. 
Connie attended many births at the Atwood hospital as well as the births
 of some of her grandchildren. She enjoyed quilting and sewing. Her 
favorite time of year was Christmas and she enjoyed having her house 
full of children and grandchildren. 
Connie was preceded in death by her husband, Dal, parents, Minnie and 
Reno Cooper, brother Jerry Cooper, and brother in-law Nicholas Patrick 
Schroeder. She is survived by her children, Jody, David (Rhonda), Judy 
(Eric), Michael (Carla); grandchildren, Jessica, Aaron, Austin, Jason, 
Keaton, Jordan, Gabriel, Mary Rachael, Bradley, Mitchell, and Jacob; 
great grandchildren, Jax, Hartley, Cooper, Cole, and Theodore; sister 
Judy Schroeder, and brother Mike Cooper (Connie).

Connie Jean (Cooper) Argabright

Everett Frank Hitschmann, 95, died September 19, 2022, at Country 
Place Senior Living, Hoisington, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born November 29, 1926,
 in rural Redwing, Kansas, the son of Frank and Veronica (Feltes) 
Hitschmann. Everett was a WWII veteran, serving as a Corporal in the 
United States Army from 1945 to 1946.

On April 3, 1951, he married Margaret Mary “Marge” Schneweis, in Beaver, Kansas. She preceded him in death on December 13, 2014.

Everett was a farmer from birth until his death, farming was definitely his life’s passion.&nbsp;

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.&nbsp; He loved bowling 
with the Beaver Bowlers, baseball, motorcycles, and making and 
collecting WWII model airplanes.&nbsp;

He is survived by three children; Randy Hitschmann and wife Stacey of
 Beaver, Mick Hitschmann and wife Carla of Odin, and Carla Shaw and 
husband John of Bayfield, Colorado; eight grandchildren, Jason Vasquez, 
Jennifer Medina and husband A.J., Heather Panning and husband Mark, 
Brigette Komarek and husband Ryan, Jackie Vogt and husband Justin, 
Ashley Shaw, Lindsey Shaw, and Candace Ortiz and husband Marcus; and six
 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a brother, Urb Hitschmann, and a sister, Sister Mary (Celestine) Urban.

Visitation will be Wednesday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with family to greet 
friends from 6 to 8 p.m.. A Vigil service with Rosary will begin at 7 
p.m., all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Thursday, September 22, 
2022, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Odin, Kansas. Burial will follow

 in rural Redwing, Kansas, the son of Frank and Veronica (Feltes) 
Hitschmann. Everett was a WWII veteran, serving as a Corporal in the 
United States Army from 1945 to 1946.On April 3, 1951, he married Margaret Mary “Marge” Schneweis, in Beaver, Kansas. She preceded him in death on December 13, 2014.Everett was a farmer from birth until his death, farming was definitely his life’s passion.&nbsp;He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.&nbsp; He loved bowling 
with the Beaver Bowlers, baseball, motorcycles, and making and 
collecting WWII model airplanes.&nbsp;He is survived by three children; Randy Hitschmann and wife Stacey of
 Beaver, Mick Hitschmann and wife Carla of Odin, and Carla Shaw and 
husband John of Bayfield, Colorado; eight grandchildren, Jason Vasquez, 
Jennifer Medina and husband A.J., Heather Panning and husband Mark,

Gary Lin Carmichael, 68, of Winona, KS, died Sunday, September 18, 2022,
 at the Logan County Hospital, in Oakley, Kan. He was born March 20,

(Calvert) Carmichael. 

Gary served in the National Guard. He was a

Ruth Lenora Maupin Betsworth Breeding, age 94, of Hugoton, Kansas, died 
Sunday, September 18, 2022, at Pioneer Manor in Hugoton, Kansas. She 
was born September 16, 1928, in Bison, Kansas, the daughter of William 
Thomas and Veda Ruth (Rumford) Maupin. 
Ruth moved to Pawnee Rock, Kansas, at the age of 3, where her parents 
owned a Drug Store, her father was the pharmacist. In growing up, many 
hours were spent behind the soda fountain of her parent’s drug store, 
serving sodas, malts, shakes, banana splits and ice cream cones. She 
attended elementary and high school at Pawnee Rock until her senior 
year, when her parents moved to Holyrood, Kansas. She graduated from 
Holyrood High School in 1946. A few months after her graduation, her 
parents moved to Hugoton, Kansas, where her father was employed by 
Bloodhart Drug. Ruth was employed by Republic Natural Gas when she 
moved to Hugoton. She married Morgan Orville Betsworth July 22, 1947, 
in Hugoton, Kansas. Three sons were born to this union: Michael Morgan,
 William Leo and Brent Alan. Michael Morgan passed from this life on 
February 26, 2000.

During the time span from 1957 to 1985, when she 
retired, Ruth was employed by the Stevens County Extension Council; the 
Hugoton Elementary School; and was office manager for Chet Davis State 
Farm Insurance Agency for a total of 20 years. Upon retirement in 1985,
 she and husband, Morgan Orville, enjoyed two years of vacationing in 
their 5th wheel. Morgan died at San Isabel, Colorado, on August 24, 
1987. After his death, Ruth was employed by Stevens County Farm Bureau 
as their secretary. On June 9, 1989, Ruth and Charles Martel Breeding 
were united in marriage at the Hugoton Baptist Church in Hugoton, 
Kansas. Ten good years of married life were enjoyed by both until the 
death of Charles on August 20, 1999. 
Ruth has spent most of her life enjoying the activities of her husbands,
 children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Not unusual, in later
 years, to see her attending the football, baseball, basketball and 
wrestling activities of her great-grandsons. One of her favorite 
remarks has been “When I die, I’ll probably fall out of a bleacher.” 
She spent a lot of time on the bleachers and enjoyed every minute of it.
 She loved her family very much and was very proud of their athletic 
abilities and also cherished and admired the beauty of her 
granddaughters and great-granddaughters. 
Ruth was a member of the Hugoton Baptist Church. She taught Sunday 
School for several years, was a member of the church choir for years and
 also she and Morgan O. sponsored the youth for several years. Ruth had
 recently attended the United Methodist Church in Hugoton. 
Ruth is survived by her sons, William Betsworth and wife Tarcy, Brent 
Betsworth and wife Teri all of Hugoton, Kansas; step-daughter, Mary Ann 
Price and husband Kenneth of Rolla; grandchildren, Camee Gifford of 
Hugoton, Candace Rushing of Statesboro, Georgia, Kate Anderson of 
Savannah, Georgia, Trisha Putthoff of Shawnee, Bethany Owens of 
Centennial, Colorado, and Brad Betsworth of Galeton, Colorado; eight 
step-grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, seven 
step-great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. 
Ruth is preceded in death by her husbands, Morgan O. Betsworth and 
Charles Breeding; son, Michael M. Betsworth; parents, William and Veda 
Maupin; sister, Jacqueline M. Robinson; and step-son, Daniel Breeding;

Martina&nbsp;(Leiker) Rohr, age 95, was called home to God on Sunday, September 18, 2022, at Main Street Manor, Russell, Kansas.

She was born January 11, 1927, in Munjor, Kansas, to Martin F. and Veronica (Pfannenstiel) Leiker. &nbsp;She married Nickolas P. “Nick” Rohr on August 12, 1946, at Victoria, Kansas. &nbsp;He preceded her in death on August 22, 2008.

Her&nbsp;childhood was spent on the farm outside of Munjor, and in her teen years she went to work in Kansas City in an&nbsp;egg factory as WWII started&nbsp;to help support our military soldiers. &nbsp;In 1967&nbsp;she went to work at the Russell Regional Hospital&nbsp;as a nurse’s&nbsp;aid. &nbsp;Martina spent 25 years there helping&nbsp;to deliver babies, caring for new mothers and spoiling newborns in the nursery.&nbsp;She lived&nbsp;in Gorham, and the last seven years she has been a resident of the Main Street Manor.

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella both of Gorham. Martina&nbsp;loved spending time with&nbsp;her grandkids and great grandkids. &nbsp;She attended many school activities, sports events, music concerts, grandparents day, and graduations. &nbsp;Her love for God was shown in many ways by&nbsp;her devotion to the church, the D of I, and many other volunteered services over the years.&nbsp;&nbsp;Martina was a loving wife, mom, grandma, great grandma, and great great grandma.

Survivors include her children, Mary Cline and husband, Chris,&nbsp;Gorham, KS; Rita Clenney and husband, Larry, Russell, KS; Delores&nbsp;Boettcher and husband, Paul, Russell, KS; her seven grandchildren; her 13 great grandchildren; her one great great grandchild;&nbsp;her sisters, Benita Rack, Anna Louise Dinkel, Aletha Hertel and Bernice Hammerschmidt.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband;&nbsp;her brothers, Celestine Leiker, Clarence Leiker, &nbsp;Wilfred&nbsp;“Bill” Leiker; her sisters, Kate Windholz and Agedia Windholz.&nbsp;

Martina (Leiker) Rohr

Ivonne “Vonnie” S. Burmeister, 83, passed away on September 18, 2022,
 at the Catholic Care Center in Bel Aire, Kansas. Vonnie was born on 
August 20, 1939, in the Methodist Parsonage in Claflin, Kansas, to Emery
 E. and Twila M. (Bisbee) Grossardt.&nbsp; She married Ferdinand “Fritz” H. 
Burmeister on January 23, 1960, in Claflin, Kansas.

Vonnie graduated from Claflin High School as the Class President and 
Valedictorian in 1957 and then attended Emporia State University.&nbsp; In 
addition to supporting Fritz on the family farm, she worked at banks in 
Claflin and Galatia, Stricker Farms, and the Hoisington Public Library.&nbsp;
 She especially enjoyed working with the young children as the 
Children’s Librarian.

Vonnie was a 58-year member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in 
Galatia, where she was active on church council, ladies’ group, and 
choir.&nbsp; She supported her children as a leader with the Fairview Scouts 
4-H club and taught crocheting and knitting.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her husband Fritz, her parents, and 
step-father Norbert Riebel.&nbsp; She is survived by; sons Chris (Shahi) of 
Cinnaminson, NJ, Dan (Tammy) of Plainfield, IL, and Kurt (Mandy) of 
Eastborough, KS; grandsons, Zane (Daniella) of Chesterfield, MI, Jacob 
(Hannah) of Royal Oak, MI, Grant of Lakewood, CO, and Graham of Golden, 
CO; great granddaughters, Brielle and Ava; sister, Darlene (Larry) 
Plymell of Hays, KS; step-sister, Carol (Larry) Horton of Great Bend, 
KS; step-brother Jim (Dee) Riebel of Lubbock, TX; and many nieces and 
nephews.

Visitation will be at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington from
 9am – 6pm on September 20, with family to greet friends from 6pm – 8pm.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 am on September 21, 2022, at

followed by burial at Fairview Cemetery in Galatia.

Evelyn Louise (Hardin) Mitchell, 88, of Hays, Kansas, and formerly of 
Russell, Kansas, passed away Saturday, September 17, 2022, at Via Christi
 Village in Hays.

Evelyn was born March 11, 1934, in Albany, Missouri, the daughter of 
Walter and Grace (McMichael) Hardin.&nbsp; She grew up in Albany and 
graduated from Albany High School in 1952.&nbsp; Evelyn met, fell in love, 
and was united in marriage to James Dale “JD” Mitchell on November 22, 
1953, in Kansas City, Missouri.&nbsp; This union was blessed with five 
children; Rose, Lonnie, Debra, Kathy and Jim.&nbsp; They made their home in 
Council Grove, Kansas, before moving to Ellsworth, Kansas.&nbsp; Then in 1960 
they moved to Russell.&nbsp; JD preceded her in death on September 4, 1988.&nbsp; 
Later, she met Kenneth McMichael and was close companions for over 20 
years.

Evelyn was a devoted wife and homemaker for her family.&nbsp; She obtained
 her certification as a Certified Nurses Aid and worked at Gatewood in 
Russell.&nbsp; She also worked over 20 years with Russell Regional Hospital 
as a nursing aid.&nbsp; &nbsp;She was a member of the Russell V.F.W. Ladies 
Auxiliary.&nbsp; She was known for her cooking especially fried chicken, and 
would expect everyone that visited to eat.&nbsp; She enjoyed reading books 
and spending time with her family and friends.

Evelyn’s surviving family include her daughters, Rose Dugan (Don) of 
Leonardville, Kansas, Debra Dronberger (Keith) of Lima, Ohio, and Kathy 
Moser (Michael) of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; sons, Lonnie Mitchell 
(Michele) of Russell, Kansas, and Jim Mitchell (Tammy) of Russell, Kansas;
 sister, Anna Mae of Grand City, Missouri; thirteen grandchildren and 
fourteen great grandchildren.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband JD, and brother Jerry Hardin.

Celebration of Evelyn’s Life will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, 
September 21, 2022, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell.&nbsp; 
Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 20, 2022, from 9:00 AM to 8:00

Jilliane Wilkerson Andrews, 29, of Hill City, Kansas, passed away suddenly Sunday, September 4, 2022. She was born August 6, 1993, in Houston. 

Although a native of Texas, Jilliane was raised in Virginia, graduating from Varina High School, with the class of 2011. Jilliane was a kind and loving person with a gentle spirit. 

Her greatest joys were her children. Left to cherish Jilliane’s memory are her husband, Wayne; a daughter, Lilly and a son, Ian; her parents, Sharri Bangoy and Richard Wilkerson; and her brothers, Tim Russo, Tom Russo and Allen Wilkerson. She is also survived by her grandmothers Geraldine Payne and Juanita Wilkerson. 

There will be a private service for Jilliane in Virginia.

Jilliane Wilkerson Andrews

Barbara Marie Smischny, 90, of Salina, Kansas, passed peacefully 
with family present on September 17, 2022, after a brief illness. Barbara
 was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on May 21, 1932, to Victor and Mary 
(Guarino) Passiglia. She attended North High School, Kansas City, 
Missouri, and graduated from Park College, Parkville, Missouri, in 1952 
with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.

After 
graduation, Barbara moved to Ellsworth, Kansas, and taught at Ellsworth 
Junior High School. She met the love of her life, Donald Smischny, in 
1954 at choir practice at the Ellsworth Presbyterian Church when he 
returned to his hometown of Ellsworth after serving overseas in the Navy
 during the Korean War. They were married in Kansas City, Missouri on 
May 29, 1955, and together they had four children: Randy Smischny - 
Manhattan, Kansas; Cheryl Klink (Doug) - Estes Park, Colorado; Melinda 
Hutton (Tracy) - North Newton, Kansas; and Janis Smischny - Salina, 
Kansas.

Barbara raised her four children in Ellsworth, 
and returned to teaching when her youngest daughter started elementary 
school. She was a Title IX teacher in the Ellsworth School District for 
19 years. She was very active in the Ellsworth Presbyterian Church, and 
she and Don enjoyed square dancing with the Ellsworth Twirlers. She was 
an excellent bridge player, and played in several women’s and couples’ 
Bridge Clubs. Barbara was also a proud member of the American 
Association of University Women.

Barbara and Don moved to Salina, 
Kansas in 1996, where they enjoyed an active retirement. They have 
resided at Salina Presbyterian Manor since 2008. She was an active 
member of Sunrise Presbyterian Church, and enjoyed traveling with her 
husband and family, singing in the church choir, dancing, playing cards,
 reading voraciously, and cooking - especially her famous Italian 
Spaghetti and Meatballs.

Barbara is survived by her 
husband of 67 years, Don Smischny, her four children, and four 
grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, 
Victor Passiglia Jr.

A Memorial Service will be held on
 Thursday, September 22, at 10:30 am, at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, 
Salina, Kansas. A private inurnment will be held at Roselawn Memorial 
Park, Salina, Kansas at a later date.

Memorial 
donations may be made in Barbara’s name to the Friends of Ellsworth 
Public Library, or the Salina Public Library Fund through the Greater

Barbara J. Speaks, 91, of Troy, Kansas, passed away Friday, September 16, 2022, at The Willow in Wathena, Kansas.

Barbara was born on April 15, 1931, in Hays, Kansas, to Luddie “Clay” and Anna (Winder) Thomas.

Barbara married Grant Speaks on October 16, 1948, in Atchison, 
Kansas. They were married 74 years and lifelong residents of Troy. He 
survives of the home.

Barbara was a Switch Board Operator for the telephone company of Troy
 for a period of time and the Site Director at the Pioneer Center for 19
 years and she was a member of the Northeast Aging Council for many 
years. She was also a member of the Troy Christian Church and Order of 
Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, James Speaks, son-in-law, Gary Blanton and brother, Lowell Thomas.

Additional survivors, children, Linda Blanton, Highland, Kansas, 
Thomas (Anita) Speaks, Troy, Brenda (Larry), Turpin, Troy, Patricia 
(Keith) Ahlvers, Frankfort, and David Speaks, Troy., Sister-in-law,

Barbara J. Speaks

James "Jim" C. Carrigan, age 82, of Salina, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family, on Friday, September 16th, 2022.

Jim was born November 16, 1938, to his parents Mike and Minnie 
Carrigan in Chicago, Illinois. He met his wife, Diane, in 1959 on a 
blind date.&nbsp; His twinkling blue eyes and contagious laugh sealed the 
deal. They were married for 61 years.

Jim worked as an Engineering Technician for Shaver &amp; Company and 
Bucher, Willis &amp; Ratliff Corp. before serving as the Director of 
Development for Sacred Heart High School. He retired from ADM Milling in
 2009.

Jim didn’t know a stranger and enjoyed getting to know people, who 
often described him as ‘ornery’ upon first meeting.&nbsp; Faith, family, and 
friends were his priorities.

He was an active member of St. Mary’s Parish, serving on the Parish 
Council, as Eucharistic Minister for 35 years, and co-Director of St. 
Mary’s Sunday pre-school program. Along with his wife, Diane, he served 
as a Marriage sponsor for several years.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Diane, his four children, 
Steve Carrigan, Scott Carrigan Lori Carrigan and Christy (Randal) 
Thomas, his beloved grandchildren Ethan and Miranda Reinking, brother 
John (Carol) Carrigan, brothers in law, Russell (Renee) Denning and 
David (Ginger) Denning, Sister-in Law, Linda Denning, and many treasured
 nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Minnie Carrigan, 
Brother, Jerry Carrigan, Sister, Jackie Baehro, mother and father-in-law

Jim enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and cheering on

James 'Jim' C. Carrigan

Louis “Louie” Kuhn, age 92, of Hays, Kansas passed away Friday, September 16, 2022, in Hays. Louie was born August 24, 1930, to August and Helen (Dreiling) Kuhn on the family farm which was in rural Victoria, Kansas in Ellis County. Louie attended and graduated from Victoria High School. He married Lorene “Renie” Engel on December 29, 1951, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Munjor, Kansas. She preceded him in death July 11, 2016. Louie worked in the oilfields primarily as a pumper until his retirement at 81 years of age. He worked for Sun Oil for 30 years and then became an independent Pumper serving many oil companies. Louie was a US Army Veteran serving in the Korean War. Louie was an avid baseball fan and an excellent player as well. He was known for his home run prowess throughout his playing carrier. He was also fan of the Royals. Louie enjoyed many things in his free time including family vacations traveling mostly by car. He enjoyed German meals especially those that used his mothers recipes which Renie cooked often for him and family. Louie had always wanted to be a farmer and for the last twenty years he has done so as a hobby on the land he and Renie purchased twenty years ago. Louie is survived by a son, Louis Kuhn Jr. of Omaha, Nebraska; three daughters, Jackie Sue Kuhn of Topeka, Kansas, Kelly Lynn Kuhn of London, England and Tasha Renee Kuhn Aubey and husband Kelly of Phoenix, Arizona; two brothers, Jim Kuhn of Topeka and Cliff Kuhn; three sisters, Norma Wellbrock of Hays, Ellie Mae Dickerson of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Merline Wellbrock of &nbsp;Anthony, Kansas; four grandchildren, Charles A. Dinkel Jr., Jeffrey M. Dinkel, Michelle Renee Davis and Jade Renee Aubey as well as two great grandchildren, Breanna Leigh Dinkel and Alyssa Renee Dinkel. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Renie; a daughter, Renee Mae Kuhn in 1967; a daughter-in-law, Patty Windholz Kuhn; brothers, Elmer, Ralph, Al, Frank and August Jr., and sisters, Alice Haselhorst, Dolorosa Berens, Leona Wellbrock and Juanita Kuhn.  </figure>Louis “Louie” Kuhn, age 92, of Hays, Kansas passed away Friday, September 16, 2022, in Hays. Louie was born August 24, 1930, to August and Helen (Dreiling) Kuhn on the family farm which was in rural Victoria, Kansas in Ellis County. Louie attended and graduated from Victoria High School. He married Lorene “Renie” Engel on December 29, 1951, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Munjor, Kansas. She preceded him in death July 11, 2016. Louie worked in the oilfields primarily as a pumper until his retirement at 81 years of age. He worked for Sun Oil for 30 years and then became an independent Pumper serving many oil companies. Louie was a US Army Veteran serving in the Korean War. Louie was an avid baseball fan and an excellent player as well. He was known for his home run prowess throughout his playing carrier. He was also fan of the Royals. Louie enjoyed many things in his free time including family vacations traveling mostly by car. He enjoyed German meals especially those that used his mothers recipes which Renie cooked often for him and family. Louie had always wanted to be a farmer and for the last twenty years he has done so as a hobby on the land he and Renie purchased twenty years ago. Louie is survived by a son, Louis Kuhn Jr. of Omaha, Nebraska; three daughters, Jackie Sue Kuhn of Topeka, Kansas, Kelly Lynn Kuhn of London, England and Tasha Renee Kuhn Aubey and husband Kelly of Phoenix, Arizona; two brothers, Jim Kuhn of Topeka and Cliff Kuhn; three sisters, Norma Wellbrock of Hays, Ellie Mae Dickerson of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Merline Wellbrock of &nbsp;Anthony, Kansas; four grandchildren, Charles A. Dinkel Jr., Jeffrey M. Dinkel, Michelle Renee Davis and Jade Renee Aubey as well as two great grandchildren, Breanna Leigh Dinkel and Alyssa Renee Dinkel. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Renie; a daughter, Renee Mae Kuhn in 1967; a daughter-in-law, Patty Windholz Kuhn; brothers, Elmer, Ralph, Al, Frank and August Jr., and sisters, Alice Haselhorst, Dolorosa Berens, Leona Wellbrock and Juanita Kuhn. Visitation will be Monday, September 19th, at 5 PM – 8 PM at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601. A combined parish vigil and rosary service will be 7 PM Monday, September the 19th at the funeral chapel. Tuesday visitation will be 10 AM until service time at The Basilica of St. Fidelis. Louis 'Louie' Kuhn

Michael Ray Best, 65, passed away September 13, 2022, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas.

He was born April 20, 1957, in Larned, Kansas, the son of Robert Lee Best and Virginia Marie (Belcher) Best.

Mike graduated from Larned High School in 1975. He attended the University of Kansas and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1979. Following graduation, he taught eighth grade history at Pratt Middle School and coached intramural football and wrestling. On August 2, 1980, he married Elizabeth (Libby) Ann Roth in Larned. They lived in Larned and raised their family there until 2007. During their years in Larned, Mike worked as manager of various departments at Dillons. Mike served on the Larned City Council, Pawnee County Economic Development Committee, Larned Swimming Pool Committee, State Theatre Association Board, 4-H Extension Council, Chamber of Commerce Retail Committee, and Pawnee County Relay for Life. He coached little league and pee-wee baseball. After relocating to Lawrence, Mike worked for Dillons and most recently retired from HyVee in 2016. He enjoyed attending KU sporting events, playing golf with friends, and spending time with his five grandchildren. He attended River City Church in Lawrence, and he was involved in Family Promise of Lawrence, an organization that helps families in housing crisis achieve and maintain permanent housing. Mike was a devoted husband, son, father, and grandpa.

Survivors include; wife, Elizabeth Best, Lawrence; son, Mark (April) Best, Lawrence; daughter Sarah (Mark) Kohls, Topeka; and five grandchildren, Mason Best, Grayson Kohls, Hannah Kohls,
 Asher Kohls, and Tenley Kohls. Other survivors include; mother, 
Virginia Best, Larned; sister, Tracey (Mike) Reynolds, Larned, 
brother-in-law, Richard (Richelle) Roth, Larned, and multiple nieces and
 a nephew.

He was preceded in death by; father, Robert Best, brother, Rick Best, and niece, Reanna Roth.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 21st, at 
Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned with Pastor Ryan Webster presiding. 
Visitation will be Tuesday September 20, 2022, at Beckwith Mortuary 9:00 
a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family present from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Inurnment will
 be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned, Kansas.

Christine "Chris" Herl,&nbsp;56, of&nbsp;Quinter, Kansas, passed peacefully away on&nbsp;the morning of September 14th, 2022. Chris was born in&nbsp;WaKeeney, Kansas, on&nbsp;April 12th, 1966, to Janice (Jan) and Nicholas (Nick) Arnhold. She&nbsp;graduated from&nbsp;Trego Community Highschool&nbsp;and Kansas State University where she received her bachelor’s degree in Education.

Chris was united in marriage to Robert Herl&nbsp;on&nbsp;June 11, 1988; they were married for 34 wonderful years. Her passion in life was teaching and helping students. She taught for&nbsp;34 years; 30 of those years were at Trego Community Schools in WaKeeney, Kansas.

&nbsp;Chris had a kind soul. She always went the extra mile to make sure everyone had the ability to succeed in life. Even as an experienced educator, she felt that there was always more to learn for herself. She had a fascination for exploring and she especially enjoyed the adventures of nature and science. Her hobbies included traveling, working on the interior design of her home, reading, painting, crafting, and discovering life with her family. She was an amazing mother and friend who often put other’s needs before her own.

Those left to cherish Chris’s memory are spouse Robert Herl of Quinter, KS; daughters Bethany Herl of Seattle, WA, and Abby Herl of Lubbock, TX; mother Jan Arnhold of Quinter, KS; sister Kathy Eberle (spouse Terry Eberle) of Cheyenne, WY; brothers Steve Arnhold of Longmount, CO and Mike Arnhold of Quinter, KS; father-in-law Moris Herl of Hays, KS; many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 19th, 2022, at Christ the King Parish Hall in WaKeeney, Kansas with Father Charlie Steier as celebrant. Leo Francis Beckman, 89, passed away September 15, 
2022, at his home. He was born April 15, 1933, in Norton, Kansas, to Joe 
and LaNeva (Weigant) Beckman.

Leo was married to Mary Lee (Mueting) on November 24, 1960. He was a 
US Army veteran and had worked as a Registered Radiologic Technologist 
for 34 years in Kansas and Nebraska hospitals and Mowery Clinic in 
Salina. Leo was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Leo
 was also an honorary Fourth Degree Knight.

Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Lee; three 
children, Denise (Kevin) Swiercinsky of Topeka, KS, Evan (Jeanne) 
Beckman of Las Cruces, NM, Lisa (John) Donart of Shawnee, KS; a sister, 
Rita Collette of Concordia, KS; five grandchildren; three 
great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and relatives.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and LaNeva Beckman; and brother, Robert Beckman.

A visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. with a Rosary beginning at 6

Theresa M. Kreutzer, 90, died September 15, 2022, at her home in Larned.

She was born May 18, 1932, at Chase, Kansas, the daughter of Anton and Matilda Zorn Wondra.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society of
 Larned, member of the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital Auxiliary, and 
past member of Larned Garden Club. She was an Avon rep for many years.

On September 5, 1956, she married Victor Kreutzer in Libenthal, Kansas; he survives.

Survivors include her husband; son, Ron (Monica) Kreutzer; step 
granddaughter, Amanda; grandson, Ryan; brother, Steve Wondra; sister, 
Addie Phillips; sister-in-law, Rosemary Wondra; and brother-in-law 
Melvin Dreher.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Bruce; two brothers, 
Bernard and Gloria, Tony and Jane; a sister, Mildred; and 
brother-in-law, Rex Phillips.

Theresa M. Kreutzer

Beverly Ann Goering passed away on November 25, 2021, at the age of 
76. Bev was born October 23, 1945, in Goodland, Kansas, to John William 
and Hazel Violet Tracy. Bev was married on August 23, 1964. She had two 
children, Christopher Scott and Robyn Elizabeth with her former husband 
Richard (Scott) Goering.

Bev earned her Bachelor’s degree in Management Science and her 
Master’s degree in Business Administration from Regis University. Bev 
was a lifetime learner and was always taking classes in various topics 
and earned countless certificates along the way.

Bev worked in the Utilities Department for the City of Fort Collins 
for 29 years. After retirement, she began her next adventure in 
designing and creating beautiful jewelry. This was one of her greatest 
joys. She was quite accomplished with beads, stones, gems, and metal. 
She could often be found at one of her workbenches sketching a new 
design, performing intricate work with a magnifying glass, or pounding 
out copper on an old railroad tie in her garage.

Bev was a longtime member of the Colorado Archaeological Society and 
the Fort Collins Rockhound Club. Bev had a love of travel and new 
experiences. She was a member of the Friendship Force and had traveled 
to 38 different countries. Bev had a passion for genealogy. She was a 
member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She loved to share 
stories about her family's heritage.

Bev was proceeded in death by her parents John and Hazel Tracy. Bev 
is survived by her partner Dean Grogan of Fort Collins, son Chris 
Goering of Windsor, daughter Robyn (Scottie) Moore of Fort Collins, 
granddaughters Mary Goering, Emily Goering, Evelyn Moore, and Madelyn 
Moore, sister Jolene (Rich) Miller of Goodland, KS, and many nieces and 
nephews.

As many of you know, Bev loved to share stories.&nbsp; These stories were 
sometimes historical or sometimes educational. She could keep you 
captivated as you learned something new. We hope you would continue

joys. She was quite accomplished with beads, stones, gems, and metal. 
She could often be found at one of her workbenches sketching a new 
design, performing intricate work with a magnifying glass, or pounding 
out copper on an old railroad tie in her garage.Bev was a longtime member of the Colorado Archaeological Society and 
the Fort Collins Rockhound Club. Bev had a love of travel and new 
experiences. She was a member of the Friendship Force and had traveled 
to 38 different countries. Bev had a passion for genealogy. She was a 
member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She loved to share 
stories about her family's heritage.Bev was proceeded in death by her parents John and Hazel Tracy. Bev 
is survived by her partner Dean Grogan of Fort Collins, son Chris 
Goering of Windsor, daughter Robyn (Scottie) Moore of Fort Collins, 
granddaughters Mary Goering, Emily Goering, Evelyn Moore, and Madelyn 
Moore, sister Jolene (Rich) Miller of Goodland, KS, and many nieces and 
nephews.As many of you know, Bev loved to share stories.&nbsp; These stories were 
sometimes historical or sometimes educational. She could keep you

Beverly Ann Goering

Kenton Leon Donovan, 63, died September 16, 2022, at the University 
of Kansas Hospital, Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born August 28, 1959, in
 Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Marvin Lee and Roberta Emily (Deichen) 
Donovan. Kenton graduated from Hoisington High School in 1979.

He served in the Kansas Army National Guard serving from 1977 to 1997
 during the Persian Gulf War, in Belgium, Switzerland, Holland and 
Germany.

Bee.&nbsp; He loved roller skating, gardening and collecting white tigers, 
matchbox cars, and angels.On April 15, 1989, he married Kimberly M. Sander, they later divorced.He is survived by his two daughters; Delora Claire (Ben) Erwin of 
Woodward, Oklahoma and Larissa Terra (Darin) Eggers of Russell; two 
sisters, Sherri K. Donovan and Vonda M. (David) Wigal, all of Wichita; 
four grandchildren, Blake Donovan Wigal, Bentlee Michael Smith Donovan, 
Anastazia Rayne Erwin, and Terra Jayden Eggers.He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Roberta Donovan, 
his grandparents, Jerome &amp; Lenora Donovan, a brother, Terry L. 
Donovan, and his Aunt Delora M. Donovan.&nbsp;Visitation will be 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, with family to greet friends from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Monday, September 19, 2022, at 
Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with Pastor Don Fisher presiding. Burial 
will follow in Hoisington Cemetery with graveside honors performed the
