James E. (Jim) Hinkhouse

Irene Marie LaBarge, 88, a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother
passed away peacefully Monday, July 7, 2025, at home in Ellis surrounded by her
family. She was born March 18, 1937, to George and Alma (Brin) Newell in Damar,
KS. On April 11, 1955, Irene was united in marriage to Vernon Lawrence LaBarge.

Irene is survived by her children; Martin (Debbie) LaBarge, Leland
LaBarge, Verlene (Charlie) Waldschmidt, Leonard LaBarge, and Kevin (Vicki)
LaBarge. Her legacy lives on through 18 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren,
and five great-great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense pride and
joy.

A lifelong homemaker, Irene created a warm and welcoming home
where everyone felt loved and cared for. She had a special gift for making
people feel so loved often over a home-cooked meal or a friendly game of cards.
Irene enjoyed the simple joys of life: fishing, camping, crocheting, cooking,
and above all, spending time with her family. Her home was always full of
laughter, delicious food, and the hum of conversations between those she loved
most. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy, and she never missed a chance to
share in their lives, celebrate their milestones, or offer a listening ear.

Irene was also deeply committed to her community. She was a proud
member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic
Church, where she found strength and purpose in her faith.

Irene was preceded in death by both of her parents, her husband
Vernon, sister Evangeline LaBarge (Newell), and brother Jasper Newell.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in Irene’s
memory to St. Mary’s Catholic School – Ellis, Kansas and the St. Jude’s
Children’s Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday July 11, 2025 at 10:00 AM.
Viewing and visitation will be Thursday July 10, 2025 from 5 PM to 7 PM with a
parish vigil service at 7 PM all at St. Mary's Catholic Church - Ellis.
Interment will follow the funeral services in the parish cemetery.

Irene Marie LaBarge

Mary Lue Deines, age 87, passed away on July 2, 2025, at
Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney, KS.

She was born on April 29, 1938, in Aleppo, KS, to Joseph and
Anna (Engelbrecht) Opat. Mary graduated from Trego Community High School with
the Class of 1956. On October 20, 1958, she married the love of her life,
LaVerne “Vernie” Deines, in Collyer, KS. Together, they shared 57 wonderful
years of marriage until Vernie’s passing on November 28, 2015.

Mary’s working life began at the Kent Café in WaKeeney.
After marrying Vernie, the two became a familiar and trusted pair in the
service station world — owning and operating Vernie’s Service Station in
WaKeeney before their work led them to Dodge City, Garden City, Salina, and
Ellis. Wherever they went, Mary and Vernie worked side by side doing what they
loved: caring for vehicles and serving customers with honesty and heart. They
eventually returned to WaKeeney, continuing their shared passion for keeping cars
clean and customers happy. Later in life, both took great pride in serving
their community as custodians for USD 208.

Though Mary and Vernie were not blessed with children of
their own, they poured their love into their many nieces and nephews, building
lifelong bonds filled with laughter and care. Their home and hearts were also
filled with love for their dogs, classic cars, and spirited bingo nights —
simple joys that brought them genuine happiness.

Mary is survived by her brother, Eugene Opat of WaKeeney,
along with many nieces and nephews who loved and cherished her deeply.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Vernie;
her parents, Joseph and Anna Opat; her brother, Jim Opat; and sisters, Betty
Fry, Dorothy Mong, and Barbara Opat.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 21, 2025,
at 10:00 a.m. at WaKeeney City Cemetery, located at South 13th St. and South
Ave., WaKeeney, KS 67672.

Mary Lue Deines

Shirley (Underwood) Smith, 88, of Hays, Kansas, passed away
on May 14, 2025, at HaysMed, Hays, Kansas. She was born on October 11, 1936, in
Bird City, Cheyenne County, Kansas, the daughter of Irvin and Dorothy
(McTaggart) Underwood. A lifelong Kansan and beloved educator, Shirley will be
remembered for her warm smile, dedicated work ethic, sense of humor and caring
heart.

Shirley grew up in Bird
City, where she graduated from Bird City Rural High School in 1955. After high
school, she pursued her passion for teaching at Fort Hays State University,
where she earned her teaching degree and later completed a master’s degree.
Education was very important to Shirley, and she carried a love of learning
throughout her life.

After completing her
education, Shirley embarked on a 34-year teaching career in the Hays, Kansas,
school system. Throughout her tenure, she inspired countless students with her
enthusiasm for learning and her nurturing guidance. Colleagues remember her as
a dedicated educator who touched many lives and was highly respected in the
community.

On June 7, 1959,
Shirley married her sweetheart, Ralph J. Smith, Jr., in Bird City, Kansas. They
shared 40 happy years together, cherishing family gatherings, community events,
and quiet moments at home, until Ralph’s passing on May 4, 1999. Shirley treasured
her family and took great pride in the accomplishments of her nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; her parents, Irvin
and Dorothy Underwood; and her brothers, Wallace and Warren Underwood.

Shirley is survived by
her nieces and nephews, Tammy (Underwood) Zimbelman of Emporia, Kansas; Brad
(Susan) Underwood of Champaign, Illinois; Kim (Roseanna) Underwood of Bird
City, Kansas; Shari (Underwood) Potts of Pensacola, Florida; and TJ (Darla) Underwood
of Florida; Sister-in-law, Jan Underwood of McPherson, Kansas; Great nieces and
nephews, Kale (Robbie Reed) Zimbelman of Wichita, Kansas; Lee (Cami) Zimbelman
of Emporia, Kansas; Tyler Underwood of Champaign, Illinois; Katie Underwood of
Jacksonville Beach, Florida; Ashley Underwood of Chicago, Illinois; and Julian
Sams of Pensacola, Florida; Great-great nieces and nephews: Derek, Julia, and
Andrew Zimbelman of Emporia, Kansas; She is also survived by her brother,
Wallace Underwood’s, son Jerry (Pat) McCaslin and family: Jill (Jeff) Samuelson
and Marc McCaslin; grandchildren, Colton Samuelson and Abbie Samuelson,

In accordance with her
final wishes, Shirley’s body was cremated. Memorial services will be 11:00

Kenneth
Kisner (70) of Wichita Falls, TX passed away on July 4, 2025, at Wichita Falls
Hospice, with his wife Connie by his side. Kenneth was born Kenneth Dean Kisner
to Isaidore P. Kisner and Mathilda M. Werth Kisner in Hays, Kansas on December
8, 1954.&nbsp; He was the first of four
children, which included two brothers, Keith and Kurt, and one sister, Kelley.
They were raised on the family farm and ranch just south of Hays.

As
a youth, Ken was well trained in crop and cattle/livestock production. He also
learned the skill of hand milking a small heard of dairy cows on a daily basis.
Therefore, he maintained a strong work ethic in his life’s work and career
pursuits. 

Ken
attended Catholic grade school and graduated from Hays High School. He was a
Saxophone player in band. He attended Fort Hays State University and graduated
with a degree in Business in 1980.&nbsp; Ken
would often laugh and tease that he had kneeled enough in church as a youth,
that the Lord would surely forgive a small indiscretion as an adult. His home
church was St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays.

Ken
met Connie S. Oelkers Flamik in the fall of 1977. She was a young, widowed
mother of an active three-year-old toddler, Tyler. The three of them formed a
lasting bond almost immediately. They spent their first Christmas together that
year while meeting their families. They were married 2½ years later on June 1,
1979. In addition, through love and commitment, Ken took on the additional
responsibility of adopting Tyler as his own. Then ten months later another son,
Trevor, was born to complete the family of four.

Ken
had a thirty-year career working for several Farm Credit Associations. He was
first hired by the 9th Farm Credit District Office in Wichita,
Kansas and was trained in their application and loan work process through
Production Credit Association. As is often said, “You can take the boy out of
the farm, but not the farm out of the boy!”&nbsp;
Ken held positions at various points in time as a Loan Officer,
Appraiser, Inspector, Manager, Regional Appraiser, and Vice President. During
his career, they moved through three states including Kansas, Oklahoma, and
Texas, eventually settling in Wichita Falls for thirty-eight years. He retired
from Capital Farm Credit in 2010.

After
retirement, Ken started his own business known as Texoma Ag Valuations where he
did agriculture and industrial related chattel appraisals and inspections. He
established customers in numerous states, through lending institutions, banks,
and individuals. He was highly regarded as someone who was ethical,
professional, honest, trustworthy, reliable, and enjoyable to work with.

Ken
was a member of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, the
International Society of Livestock Appraisers, and the American Society of Farm
Equipment Appraisers. He had completed training in Constructive Agriculture
Lending through Farm Credit Services and was certified through Auction Insight
Certified Appraisers. Ken was also employed with the SAM division of the
Federal Government as an Independent Contractor, doing appraisal and inspection
work for several USDA offices.

Ken
was an athletic individual and loved being outside. He enjoyed playing
basketball, tennis, and golf. As time and responsibilities became more
prominent in his life he took up walking two miles a day. During his time in
college, he worked for a garden center and learned the art of landscaping. He
carried that knowledge throughout his life.

Ken
was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church. He held onto his strong belief
in Christ from his earliest teachings. In addition, Ken was a beloved husband,
father, and friend. He will be greatly missed, and we look forward to reuniting
with him in Heaven. Until then, we know that he will forever be around us and
in our hearts. 

Ken
is survived by his wife, Connie; two sons, Trevor Kisner and Tyler Kisner and
wife Liberty, and their family: Lawson Kisner, Geordy Deatherage and wife
Madison, and Logan Deatherage.&nbsp;

met Connie S. Oelkers Flamik in the fall of 1977. She was a young, widowed
mother of an active three-year-old toddler, Tyler. The three of them formed a
lasting bond almost immediately. They spent their first Christmas together that
year while meeting their families. They were married 2½ years later on June 1,
1979. In addition, through love and commitment, Ken took on the additional
responsibility of adopting Tyler as his own. Then ten months later another son,
Trevor, was born to complete the family of four.Ken
had a thirty-year career working for several Farm Credit Associations. He was
first hired by the 9th Farm Credit District Office in Wichita,
Kansas and was trained in their application and loan work process through
Production Credit Association. As is often said, “You can take the boy out of
the farm, but not the farm out of the boy!”&nbsp;
Ken held positions at various points in time as a Loan Officer,
Appraiser, Inspector, Manager, Regional Appraiser, and Vice President. During
his career, they moved through three states including Kansas, Oklahoma, and
Texas, eventually settling in Wichita Falls for thirty-eight years. He retired
from Capital Farm Credit in 2010.After
retirement, Ken started his own business known as Texoma Ag Valuations where he
did agriculture and industrial related chattel appraisals and inspections. He
established customers in numerous states, through lending institutions, banks,
and individuals. He was highly regarded as someone who was ethical,
professional, honest, trustworthy, reliable, and enjoyable to work with.Ken
was a member of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, the
International Society of Livestock Appraisers, and the American Society of Farm
Equipment Appraisers. He had completed training in Constructive Agriculture
Lending through Farm Credit Services and was certified through Auction Insight
Certified Appraisers. Ken was also employed with the SAM division of the
Federal Government as an Independent Contractor, doing appraisal and inspection
work for several USDA offices.Ken
was an athletic individual and loved being outside. He enjoyed playing
basketball, tennis, and golf. As time and responsibilities became more
prominent in his life he took up walking two miles a day. During his time in
college, he worked for a garden center and learned the art of landscaping. He
carried that knowledge throughout his life.Ken
was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church. He held onto his strong belief
in Christ from his earliest teachings. In addition, Ken was a beloved husband,
father, and friend. He will be greatly missed, and we look forward to reuniting
with him in Heaven. Until then, we know that he will forever be around us and
in our hearts. Ken

Kenneth Kisner 

Andrew Keith Pfannenstiel, 48, went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 17, 2025. Andy was born on June 9, 1976, to Duane (Whitey) Pfannenstiel and Sally Jo (Mapes) Hanhardt. 

Andy grew up in Stockton and graduated from Stockton High School. He continued his education at Kansas State University and Fort Hays State University.  He later received his Master’s Degree at Arizona School of Health Sciences in Mesa, Arizona. Andy earned the title of Physician Assistant-Certified from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. Elite Health of Colorado was Andy’s growing and successful business.  Andy’s warmth and genuine care for his patients grew his practice and added a new meaning to 'Elite Healthcare'! 

'Dad' was his title!  Sophia Joelle, 17, Brooks Alexander, 15, and Scarlett Elyse, 14, were loved and nurtured by their dad.  Andy and all three children were baptized together at New Life Church in Colorado Springs on May 9, 2025.  Their family activities kept their lives busy, productive, and happy. On a family picture in their home, the inscription read, “To the world you are a dad.  To our family you are the world.”&nbsp;

Andy is mourned and survived by his mother, Sally Jo Hanhardt, Hays, his father, Duane Pfannenstiel and wife Becky, stepmom, and brother Jesse, all of Topeka.  His step-sisters, Shelly Green (Matt) of Cody, Wyoming and Betsy Wagner (Travis) of Olathe, and their families.

 Proceeding him in death were his stepdad, Roger Hanhardt, his grandparents Keith and Maxine Mapes, and Connie and Marcella Pfannenstiel. Leaving to mourn his loss are his aunts, uncles, and cousins, many friends, football buddies, colleagues at hospitals and Urgent Care Clinics throughout Kansas, Arizona and Colorado.

 Andy’s best one liner was a question I would ask him before he hung up from our daily phone call.  “What are you going to do today son?”  His answer was, “I’m going to work to stomp out disease and save lives.”  And that is what he did.  Andy was loved. A celebration of life for Andy will be held on June 27th from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Woodmoor Barn Community Center located at 1691 Woodmoor Dr. Monument, Co.

 Andy’s memorial service will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church, 2000 Main Street, Hays, Ks. at 10:00 am on July 12th 2025. Memorials should be made to Andrew Pfannenstiel. These funds will be used for the children’s education.

Anita Loraine Mead, age 76, graduated to heaven on June 27,
2025, passing peacefully at her home in WaKeeney, KS. She was born on January
19, 1949, in Garden City, KS, to Glenn and Dixie (Pash) Moore.

On May 25, 1968, Anita married the love of her life, Dennis
Mead, in Garden City. He graduated to heaven on April 5, 2007, and Anita has
missed him every day since. The two were high school sweethearts, both
graduating from Garden City High School, where their lifelong journey as
soulmates began.

Anita continued her education, ultimately earning a master’s
degree in Higher Education Administration through studies at Friends University
and Fort Hays State University. Her professional journey reflected her
dedication to serving others—working in various roles at law offices, Cargill,
Garden City Community College, Fort Hays State University, and US BioEnergy.

She is survived by her daughter, Tiffany (Joe) Bolen; her
grandson, Chace; her sister and brother-in-law, Rita and Gary Weber; and her
nephew, Jake Weber.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dennis
Mead, and her parents, Glenn and Dixie Moore.

A Celebration of Life and Praises to Our Father God will be
held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Generations Church in
WaKeeney, KS. Pastor Robby Hernandez will guide the celebration.

Anita Loraine Mead

Brian Thomas Brungardt, age 38 of Hays, Kansas passed away at his
home on June 18, 2025, in Hays.

He was born June 2, 1987, in Hays to James R. and Michele R.
(Morton) Brungardt, the second of their three sons.

In his younger days Brian enjoyed a number of family activities.
Visits to each set of grandparents over the holidays took place annually.
Summer vacations to Colorado always brought pleasant memories.

Smiles were provided by many rides and activities at the county
and state fairs. Brian developed close friendships with a number of school
classmates. He was active in Cub and Boy Scouts activities at this time and
enjoyed camping out with his fellow scouts. Many weekends during the summer
were spent at the family cabin at Cedar Bluff Lake. An annual family activity
was "June Birthdays" - Brian and his brother Neil and three of his
six cousins all had birthdays in June. Along with the great food that mom provided,
great times were had on the boat riding on a tube and fishing with advice given
from his older brother Neil. Brian's biggest catch was when he hooked dad's ear
up by the dam. He enjoyed golf cart and jet ski rides - first as a passenger
and by himself later when he was older.

Brian graduated from Hays High in 2006 and from Fort Hays State
University in 2013, with a degree in history. During these years he gained
valuable experience from his work at Carlos O'Kelly's, Humane Society of the
High Plains, Adronics/Elrob, Hays Daily News, Quizno's and Pepsi. Another
milestone in Brian's life that had a positive impact on him was his trip to
Spain with two friends that involved walking a portion of the Camino de
Santiago over several days with the destination being the Cathedral of Santiago
de Compostela in Galicia, Spain.

He had a passion for history and often visited museums when
traveling. This interest started at an early age - as a kid he was crazy about
dinosaurs. He knew of so many species and could identify them by the mounted
skeletons. He expanded his interest in museums to include virtually every item
on display.

Many of Brian's family travels were not complete without a zoo
stop. It didn't matter what size the zoo was — he was ready to go.

Music had a special place in Brian's interests. He played an
instrument in the middle school band as well as trying his hand at playing
guitar in his free time at home. Like so many of his friends, Brian had quite a
collection of games, CD's and DVD’s. Many songs and videos were sent to family
and friends.

Brian enjoyed concerts and even attended (Heaven forbid) a number
of classic rock concerts with his parents. By far his greatest enjoyment was
going to concerts of groups popular with him and his friends. His younger
brother Brett went with him frequently - a favorite for them was the annual
Mayhem Festival.

Sports and food were also favorites with Brian. He got a lot of
enjoyment attending the Wichita Thunder hockey games as well as an occasional
baseball game with the family in Oklahoma City. Golf his way was with a
frisbee. Brian was game to try about any kind of food set in front of him. You
never knew what kind of unique combinations he would create. It was usually
made spicy hot from his condiment collection. He did find out that you don't
use sriracha sauce like ketchup.

Brian was witty and articulate with a great sense of humor.
Sometimes this talent was not understood by some but overall most people got
it. He loved his cat, Kittyoko, that he inherited from a friend. She was such a
beautiful cat with quite the attitude. She probably only cared for two people
in her lifetime and Brian was one of them.

He is survived by his parents, James and Michele Brungardt of Hays
and his brothers Neil of Beverly, KS and Brett of Oklahoma City. Aunts and
uncles Tom and Judy Brungardt of Pratt, KS, Allen Brungardt of Colorado
Springs, Craig Morton of Atwood, KS and Mike and Carla Starns of Independence,
KS.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Tom and Maud
Brungardt Sr, Edward and Marge Morton and an aunt, Barbara Morton.

Brian loved deeply and was deeply loved. He will be missed.

A celebration of Brian's life will be held at 11:00 AM on
Wednesday, July 16, 2025, with a memorial visitation starting at 10:00 AM at
Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory - Brock's Chapel, located at 2509 Vine St
in Hays.

Jonda Kaye Keiswetter, 68, of Hays, passed away
Monday, June 30, 2025 at HaysMed.

She was born January 14, 1957 in Norton County, Kansas
to Keith and June (Sprague) Keiswetter.&nbsp; While
living on a farm northeast of Lenora, Jonda attended school in Lenora, and in
1972, when her family moved to Norton she transferred to Norton Community High
School, graduating in 1975.&nbsp; Jonda continued her education to become a Registered
Nurse and retired from Rush County Memorial Hospital in LaCrosse in 2024.&nbsp; 

Jonda loved to work on puzzles and handmade craft
items.&nbsp; She was an avid gardener, enjoyed
taking her produce to the farmer’s market, loved her chickens, and was
frequently referred to as “the Chicken Lady”.&nbsp;
She was a very devoted Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals and KU
basketball fan.

Survivors include her son Chance Keiswetter of Hays,
sister Deborah (Steve) Persinger of Lenora, brother Louis (Jana) Keiswetter of
Norton, and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, Keith and
June Keiswetter.

Lawrence Sander, age 87, of Salina, Kansas, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 3, 2025.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He was born February 6, 1938, on the family farm in Walker, Kansas, to Anton P. and Rosa (Nemecheck) Sander.&nbsp; Lawrence was the 10th of 11 children.&nbsp; He grew up enjoying the outdoors.&nbsp; He graduated from Victoria High School in 1957.&nbsp; He worked in Russell for Carter Block plant and eventually met the love of his life Barbara Brown.&nbsp; They had a short engagement and were married January 30, 1965.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He moved to Salina in 1966 and started working for Hawker Beechcraft where he worked for 35 years.&nbsp; Lawrence never knew a stranger and would strike up a conversation with anyone. You could always find Lawrence outside and enjoying the summer sun.&nbsp; He was passionate about keeping his lawn the envy of the neighborhood. It was always green and nicely maintained.&nbsp; He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle and later cruising the neighborhood on his tricycle.&nbsp; In the fall, he would focus on cheering on his favorite team, Go Chiefs!&nbsp;

Left to mourn are his son Kevin Sander and wife Jessica.&nbsp; His two sisters, Sister Helen Sander CSA, Fond du Lac, WI; and Rosie Nash, Dallas, TX.&nbsp; Plus many nieces, nephews, extended family, and the friends he made along the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Barbara of 39 years, six sisters and two brothers.

Lucy Vontrice
Kennedy, born on October 13, 1926, in Garfield, Arkansas, passed away
peacefully, at the age of 98, at Homestead Assisted Living of Russell, Kansas on
July 4, 2025. She was the beloved middle daughter of John Seaburn and Sarah
Elizabeth (O'Neil) Clark. Proud of her Cherokee heritage, Lucy was known for
her distinctive black hair and her deep connection to her Native American
roots. 

Lucy’s early
years were spent in the hills of Arkansas until her family relocated to
Webster, Kansas, when her mother married “Daddy Homer” Doughty. Lucy began 7th
grade in Webster, a time she fondly remembered as one of the happiest periods
of her life. It was here that she learned to crochet from a teacher at the
Webster school, a skill she cherished and practiced until her 90s when it
became too difficult. She was known for using vibrant and exotic colors in her crochet
work.

In 1944, Lucy
married Fred Schoeller in Hill City, Kansas. Together they welcomed one son,
Michael Homer Schoeller, before eventually parting ways. Lucy later married
Kenneth 'Bud' Clarence Kennedy on February 22, 1966 at St. Thomas
Catholic Church in Stockton, Kansas, and the couple made their home in
Plainville, Kansas. Kenneth preceded her in death on February 29, 1988. Lucy
found companionship once again with W.K. "Kenny" Bjornstad, with whom
she shared 16 joyful years until his death in 2004. Their time together was
filled with adventures, including driving flag cars for Schult Mobile Home and
fishing at Webster Lake and other ponds. Through this relationship she became a 'bonus' grandma for the entire Bjornstad clan. She later rekindled a
relationship with her high school friend, Alva 'Alvie' Winters of Hill City.

A dedicated and
hardworking woman, Lucy pursued various roles throughout her career. She
graduated from Logan High School in 1959 and furthered her education with a
Nancy Taylor secretarial certificate from Manhattan, Kansas, in 1960. She
completed a general secretarial course at Brown-Mackie School of Business in
Salina in 1961 and was certified as a typist and stenographer by the U.S. Civil
Service Commission. Lucy also earned her nurse’s aide certification in 1968.
Her career included roles as a waitress, cook, CNA and owner of the East-Side
Cafe in Logan, Kansas. She later worked at the Midway Cafe in Stockton, where
her delicious meals and warm hospitality left a lasting impression on those she
served. She was known for her homemade pies, banana bread, and Christmas
fruitcake.

Lucy was a
member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, and the VFW
Auxiliary in Plainville. She also served as a foster grandparent for Plainville
Elementary classes from 2004 to 2009. She greatly cherished her time spent with
the children at USD #270. 

Lucy is
survived by her daughter-in-law, Karla Schoeller, Halstead, KS; three
grandchildren, Phillip, Valery and Sarah; three step-children, Sharon Inks,
Karol Shaw and David Kennedy; step-grandchildren; a niece and nephews and her 'bonus' family, and many friends. Lucy will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

She was
preceded in death by her husband, Bud, son, Michael Homer Schoeller; sisters,
Shirley Patricia Iman, Jimmie Eugenia Carswell; step-son, Ken Kennedy; and two
nephews. 

A Memorial Service
will be held on Friday, July 11, 2025, at 2:00 PM, at Plumer-Overlease Funeral
Home 320 SW 2nd Plainville, KS 67663. Burial will follow at Sacred
Heart Catholic Cemetery in Plainville. Visitation will be held from Noon until
2:00 PM prior to the service at the Funeral Home. 

Lucy will be
remembered for her strength, resilience, and the love she shared with those
around her. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, hard work, and the
importance of cherishing every moment.

In lieu of
flowers or memorials, the family kindly asks that you consider volunteering
your time to work with children or spreading kindness to friends and neighbors

Lucy Vontrice Kennedy

Ernest V. Pfeifer, Sr., age 87, of Ellis, Kansas passed away
peacefully July 4, 2025, at the Ellis Good Samaritan Society, Ellis, Kansas.

He was born in Hays, Kansas on September 24, 1937, to Ben and
Martina (Fross) Pfeifer. Ernest graduated from St. Joseph Military Academy in
1957 and married Rosemary (Engel) Pfeifer on September 28, 1957. Ernest was a
lifelong farmer and rancher raising his family on a farm north of Ellis, Kansas
and was active in the community serving on numerous boards.

Ernest is survived by his wife, Rosemary, of the home and his six
children, sons, Ernie Jr. Pfeifer (Sherry), David Pfeifer (LuAnn), Jerry
Pfeifer (Nancy), and Jim Pfeifer (Linda) all of Ellis, Kansas and daughters,
Christine Gist (Mike), Hays, Kansas and Sandy Rome (James), Ellis, Kansas.
Twelve grandchildren, Ernest Pfeifer III (Ann), Lynn Leiker (Landon), Jessica
Klaus (Joe), Sarah Gist, Danielle Flinn (Todd), Dylan Pfeifer, (friend,
Brandi), Nicole Brown (Mitch), Scott Pfeifer (fiancé, Hailey), Cole Pfeifer
(Lanie), Lexie Hawkins (Avery), Derek Pfeifer (Brooklyn), and Alyssa Rome;

Larry “Ross” Berg, Jr., age 53, of WaKeeney, KS, passed away
on July 2, 2025, at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital.

Ross was born on September 29, 1971, in WaKeeney to Larry
and Judy (Wertz) Berg. He graduated with the Class of 1991 from Trego Community
High School.

He spent several years at Midwest Cooperative in WaKeeney,
where his onery spirit was well known. Ross enjoyed keeping things lively with
a teasing smile, always letting folks know it was all in good fun. A true farm
boy at heart, he loved being out on the farm, especially going with his dad to
check on the cows, and took great pride in watching his nieces and nephews
participate in their activities and events.

Ross enjoyed watching his favorite television shows—The
Dukes of Hazzard, The Mollie B Polka Party, and The Price is
Right—often with a cold Dr. Pepper. He was also a loyal fan of the Kansas
City Chiefs during football season. He was well known for giving the staff at
the Long-Term Care unit at TCLMH a hard time — and they happily returned it in
kind. His playful teasing was a way to connect, and bingo days with those same
staff members were highlights filled with laughter and warmth.

Ross is survived by his mother, Judy Berg of WaKeeney;
sister, Shelly Huser (Jim Dreiling) of Victoria; niece, Kristin Werth (Brayden)
of Ogallah, and their children Emma, Kolt, Sophie, and one on the way; niece,

Byron Lowell Keith (Pete)

<a>Sherri Lea (Lotker) Shuler, born March 2, 1950, in
Oberlin, KS to Floyd Lee and Helen Dorothea (Forrester) Lotker, Jr. and started
her journey on June 17, 2025 at the age of 75, in Goodland, KS at Topside
Manor.</a>

Sherri grew up on the family homestead west of Oberlin alongside her three
siblings Floyd Lee III (Skipper), Laurie and Jackie. Along with the daily farm
chores and looking after her younger sisters, she loved spending time with the
family pets, Classy the dog and riding Patsy the family horse, Sunday boat
outings at the lake, water skiing and 4-H. She attended school in Oberlin, with
activities including Home Ed and Civil Air Patrol, graduating from DCHS in
1968.

On a summer visit to her grandmother in Bonita Springs, FL, Sherri fell in
love with the ocean, walking along the beach, collecting&nbsp;butterfly
seashells, and enjoying the warm tropical weather.

Sherri met the love of her life, Steven Leslie Shuler, at the age of two
and they later reconnected at the pool during the summers and were allowed to
date after Sherri turned 16.&nbsp; They married March 7, 1968, and Amy Marie,
Deborah Rae and Samuel Jonathan completed their family. Steve’s military
service sent them to Germany for 2 years before returning to Selden, KS, where
they farmed and raised cattle together with Steven’s parents. They later
divorced.

She began her post education in 1985 at McCook Community College and
transferred to Fort Hays State University in 1987. She obtained her Bachelor’s
in Psychology.&nbsp; Her career allowed her to work in Colorado, Kansas,
Oklahoma and Texas. She returned to Oberlin in 2009 to become her parents'
caregiver until their deaths in 2012 and 2015. She then retired to Bonita
Springs, FL, living only a few minutes from her favorite beach. But the longing
of her great grandchildren and illness brought her back to Kansas to be cared
for.

Sherri was a member of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, McCook, NE; her faith
was always important to her and through her life was actively involved with the
United Methodist Church, Selden, KS; St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Hays, KS;
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Goodland, KS; Christ Church, Denver, CO; and Faith
Lutheran Church, Oberlin, KS. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star for
over 50 years, many as the Worthy Matron, Selden Garden Club, Selden Methodist
Ladies, Red Hat Society, Monday evening club, book-cooking clubs, prayer
groups.

Family was the most important part of her life. Especially becoming Grandma
and then later Gigi. Nothing made her prouder than watching all of them grow
and always daydreaming of what they would be like when they got older.

Sherri loved to learn about other cultures. She was especially fond of
Scottish Bagpipes, often attending the Highland Games in Colorado. She enjoyed
traveling overseas: Germany and France, staying with her adopted French family,
Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Luxemberg, and Belgium. One of her
greatest joys was fulfilling her lifelong dream with discovering London on
several occasions, and most of all, retracing the footsteps of her
grandparents' lives in Birmingham, England.

She is survived by her three children: Amy (Sebastien) Gavieiro, Deborah
Shuler, and Samuel Shuler. Her six grandchildren Tyler (Taryn) Jones, Tanner
(Abby) Jones, Thatcher (Valerie) Jones, Rebecca (Thomas) Gavieiro, Taitem
Jones, Andrew (Annika) Gavieiro. Four great grandchildren: Brody, Harper,
Baxter and Rocky. Brother, Floyd Lee (Khadine) Lotker III and sister, Laurie
(James) Wasson. Honorary son, Ross Hunt, Brother-in-law, Lynn Myers,
Goddaughter Eustacia (Dustin) Drake, along with many aunts and an uncle,
cousins, nieces and nephews, and many close, cherished friends.

Sherri is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Jackie Lotker-Myers
and nephew Jacob Wasson.

A memorial service will take
place on July 12, 2025, 11:00AM, at the Faith Lutheran Church, Oberlin, KS.
Private burial in Rexford, KS, will take place at a later time. Memorials can

Sherri Lea (Lotker) Shuler

Haven Dee (Moore) Applegate, born
August 19, 1932, in Meade, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 26,
2025 at Ellis Good Samaritan Society surrounded by her loved ones.

Haven graduated from the
University of Kansas with a bachelor’s degree in nursing, dedicating her life
to caring for others both professionally and personally. She married the love
of her life, Francis Applegate Jr., on June 4, 1954, and together they built a
family rooted in love, service, and kindness.

A devoted mother, grandmother, and
great-grandmother, Haven found her greatest joy in caring for her family and
spending cherished time with her grandchildren. Her warmth and generosity
touched everyone she met. She loved being outdoors in her garden, tending to
her flowers, and found happiness in the simple pleasures of life; especially a
good dessert. &nbsp;She also gave back to her
community by volunteering with Meals on Wheels, demonstrating her lifelong
commitment to helping others. 

During her time at Ellis Good
Samaritan, Haven received outstanding care from the compassionate and dedicated
staff. In return, she kept everyone on their toes and smiling with her quick
wit, sharp responses, and endless stories that made every day a little
brighter.

Haven is survived by her son, Troy
Applegate and wife Connie; grandchildren Kalee and Courtney Daily, Koby Daily
and wife Brie, Alexandra and Ashley Applegate, Brooke Fox and husband Cooper,
and Sadie Fox; and great grandchildren Theodore and Emmy Daily. She is also
survived by her sister, Gail Moore-Bosserman.

She was preceded in death by her
beloved husband, Francis Applegate Jr.; her parents, Charity and Dwight Moore;
her brother, Robert Moore; and her children, Darin Applegate, Kirsten Daily,
and Noelle Fox.

Funeral Services will be at 10:00
am on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Pastor
Brant Rice officiating. &nbsp;Inurnment will
follow in Fort Hays Memorial Gardens.&nbsp;

at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

She was born on December 10,
1946, in Genoa, Nebraska to Alphonse Louis and Dorothy Mary (Stanczyk)
Shotkoski.&nbsp; She married Alfred “Al” Windholz on November 26, 1966, in
&nbsp;Globeville, Colorado.

Judy was a paraprofessional at
Fullerton Elementary School in Fullerton, Nebraska.&nbsp; Then Judy and Al
moved to Victoria, Kansas and she worked for U.S.D. # 489 at Jefferson
Elementary School, Westside School and Kathryn O’Loughlin McCarthy Elementary
School, for over 30 years and retired in 2010.

Judy grew up in Nance County
Nebraska and Denver, Colorado.&nbsp; She was a 1964 graduate of the Mount
Carmel High School in Denver, Colorado.

Judy was a member of the Basilica
of Saint Fidelis, Saint Fidelis Christian Mothers, served on the Saint Fidelis
Parish Council, a volunteer on the funeral committee, a volunteer for the
Victoria Meals on Wheels, and was a religious education instructor for many
years.&nbsp; She had a big heart that touched everyone she knew, and she
absolutely loved being a wife, a mom, and a grandma ~ family was everything to
her.

Judith A. 'Judy' (Shotkoski) Windholz

Chester
Neil DeWerff, 89, of Monkey Island, Ok and formerly of Hays, Ks, passed away on
Wednesday, June 25, 2025 in Grove, Ok. He was born on February 12, 1936 in
Great Bend, Ks to Chester Leon and Clara (Scheufler) DeWerff. 



Neil was raised near Ellinwood, Ks on the family dairy farm, where &nbsp;his
strong work ethic and his Christian faith were instilled. He graduated in 1954
from Ellinwood High School, where he had been a standout athlete and
quarterback of the undefeated football team. Neil played football and
basketball on scholarship at Emporia State University and earned 3-year varsity
honors and a Bachelor’s degree in Education. 



Neil began his career at Sabetha High School, coaching basketball and golf for
six years. His basketball team famously won the Dodge City Tournament of
Champions, a rare feat for the small school. Neil moved to Colby and coached at
the high school for 14 years. He led the basketball team to four consecutive
state tournaments, culminating with the state championship in 1970 and a
perfect 25-0 record. His Colby golf teams won state championships in 1973 and
1976. At his retirement, his career basketball coaching record was 337-99.



Neil became the Golf Course Superintendent at Smoky Hill Country Club in Hays.
Under his leadership, it became one of Kansas’ top courses. Neil served as
consultants to many area golf courses and was a member of the Golf Course
Superintendent Association. While at Smoky Hill, he also served as the
Commissioner of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. After leaving
Smoky Hill, he served as the Superintendent of the Ellis Golf Club in Ellis, Ks
&nbsp;for 17 years. Neil was an outstanding golfer in his own right and a true
devotee of the game.



Neil is survived by his wife, Belinda (Steckline) DeWerff of Monkey Island, OK;
sons, Joe DeWerff (Kathy) of Topeka, KS and Mike DeWerff (Tammy) of Gulf

DeWerff of Memphis, TN, and Kinley, Kasen, Kallan, and Viviana Taylor of
Wichita; and great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Leo, and Landon.



He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Vernon DeWerff, Kenneth
DeWerff, and Edith Meyer.



Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at St.
Joseph's Catholic Church, 215 W. 13th St., Hays, KS. Burial will follow at 2:30
PM in the Ellinwood Cemetery.



Visitation will be Tuesday, July 1, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with a vigil and
rosary at 7:00 PM at St. Joseph’s Church. 



Additional visitation will be Wednesday, July 2, from 8:30 to 9:30 AM at
Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory – Brock’s Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays.



Memorial contributions are suggested to the Thomas County Community Foundation
(TCCF) in honor of Coach Neil DeWerff. Donations will benefit the Colby high
school basketball program and may be mailed to the funeral home or TCCF at 350
S. Range Avenue, Colby 67701.

Neil DeWerff, 89, of Monkey Island, Ok and formerly of Hays, Ks, passed away on
Wednesday, June 25, 2025 in Grove, Ok. He was born on February 12, 1936 in
Great Bend, Ks to Chester Leon and Clara (Scheufler) DeWerff. 

Neil was raised near Ellinwood, Ks on the family dairy farm, where &nbsp;his
strong work ethic and his Christian faith were instilled. He graduated in 1954
from Ellinwood High School, where he had been a standout athlete and
quarterback of the undefeated football team. Neil played football and
basketball on scholarship at Emporia State University and earned 3-year varsity
honors and a Bachelor’s degree in Education. 

Neil began his career at Sabetha High School, coaching basketball and golf for
six years. His basketball team famously won the Dodge City Tournament of
Champions, a rare feat for the small school. Neil moved to Colby and coached at
the high school for 14 years. He led the basketball team to four consecutive
state tournaments, culminating with the state championship in 1970 and a
perfect 25-0 record. His Colby golf teams won state championships in 1973 and
1976. At his retirement, his career basketball coaching record was 337-99.

Neil became the Golf Course Superintendent at Smoky Hill Country Club in Hays.
Under his leadership, it became one of Kansas’ top courses. Neil served as
consultants to many area golf courses and was a member of the Golf Course
Superintendent Association. While at Smoky Hill, he also served as the
Commissioner of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. After leaving
Smoky Hill, he served as the Superintendent of the Ellis Golf Club in Ellis, Ks
&nbsp;for 17 years. Neil was an outstanding golfer in his own right and a true
devotee of the game.

Neil is survived by his wife, Belinda (Steckline) DeWerff of Monkey Island, OK;
sons, Joe DeWerff (Kathy) of Topeka, KS and Mike DeWerff (Tammy) of Gulf
Shores, AL; daughter, Lindsay Taylor (Adam) of Wichita, KS; sister, Virginia
